Keeping balls you caught while a match

I am wondering if you are allowed to keep the balls that players hit inadvertently outside the tennis court into the crowd if you are able to catch it...
Would be a nice souvenir... :)

You're supposed to give it back to the ballkids but of course you won't go to jail if you keep it. :p
I think the players are supposed to return the balls they use to practice with (at least in Roland Garros) but some players ALWAYS give them away.

I believe that at the US Open you are now allowed to keep balls hit into the audience. :)

The USO does, although they made such a big song and dance about it when it did allow it, like as though it costs so much money for the few balls that are caught over a fortnight.

As far as I know, only in Ashe stadium (I was asked to give it back on one of the outer courts)

It's not about how much those balls cost, it's about the quality of the balls in play. They can't replace the fly balls with new ones because the speed, etc will be different. And if they don't replace it, there are less balls in play and again, affect the quality of the tennis balls.

They allow you to keep the balls in Ashe, Armstrong and Grand Stand stadiums. The reason they made a big deal about allowing it is because John McEnroe made a big deal about a little kid having to give back a ball a few years back.

i am wondering because i visited a tennis match and a spectator caught a ball, but the chair umpire told him to give it back...but i remember that sometimes they are allowed to keep it (at matches i watched on tv)
but then they have the problem that lee described...
well, hopefully i will never get the chance to catch a ball, because i wouldn´t know what to do...keeping or giving it back...and it is pretty embarassing if the umpire has to ask you for giving them back...

I wouldn't dare hang onto a player's balls during a match, though if they were available afterwards I wouldn't mind getting my hands on them.

Yeah you gotta draw the line somewhere cause they need to do their job on the court not fool around

Imagine trying that during a match with a player like Agassi, he would have most likely jumped into the crowd and nailed you for it.
