If Ferrero will win against Lapentti in straight sets, the Spaniard plays in QF...

Actually, he can win in 3 sets and still qualify. He only needed to win one set today.

Other way round. Devilder was 5-2 up in the 2nd and then JC came back to lead 6-5.
He never had a MP. Devilder held quite comfortably and then won the TB 7-2.

Why? If Ferrero will win 2-1 all the players have 1/1 in matches and 3/3 in sets

:haha:

Well, Ferrero only got to Costa's F because he had a cakewalk draw (Sarjetta in a SF is proof).

Indeed. It will then come down to game ratios:

Lapentti is 14-12
Devilder is 26-26
Ferrero is 12-14

It's finely balanced at the moment. What I don't know is what happens if Ferrero wins 2 games more than Lapentti. Then they're all equal on both set and game ratios.

But if he'll win 6-4, 2-6, 6-2

current jcf is a bum

Current JCF knows that he has to beat Lapentti, even if he'd won today.
So why bother wasting energy on a 3rd set?

I know that is not very likely to happen but if it does it's definitely one of the most bullshit parts of RR

JCF knows about that today he only need one set today vs Devilder despite loss and then if he beat Lapentti in straight sets he will advance to the QF...

well, if he won today in 2 sets he would need to win against lapentti, in 2 or in 3, which is more achievable than a straight sets win

RR sucks indeed but dont make it like JCF entered the court with a calculator in his hands rather than his racket

I agree. But I don't know what would be the best solution in this kind of situation. Maybe "points won"? Devilder is 170-163. For me this would be better than "higher rank player"

Not really. Even if he'd won 6-0 6-0 today it wouldn't have helped. He needs to beat Lapentti, no matter what the result of today's match.

All he needed was one set. He knew that and he clearly set out to win the first set. After that, it was just a matter of saving energy, as long as the game ratio wasn't too bad. He can lose a set to Lapentti and still advance.

So sad seeing Ferrero these days :(

He was incredible during his Roland Garros win, if only he could get back to that level.

I must say I'm hoping for that 6-4 2-6 6-2 scenario. Not because I'm a big Ferrero fan, but because I can't think of anything that would more effective demostrate what a farce this round robin system is. If Ferrero advances the quarterfinals solely due to having the highest ranking alot of very tough questions will have to be answered.

scarecrows
02-21-2007, 09:26 PM
Exactly.

Not really. Even if he'd won 6-0 6-0 today it wouldn't have helped. He needs to beat Lapentti, no matter what the result of today's match.

:haha: whatever the gadget, it needs a sophisticated software to crunch the RR numbers on the spot. don't know if jc could've worked it out that well.

maybe mr disney has made an investment into a software company....

anyway many thanks from nicolas, who now gets some nice ranking points and pocket money :D

So true; I was just watching some of that match the other day and couldn't help but notice how smooth his game was back then. The clay court season would be so exciting if he could get back to that form and start challenging Roger and Rafa.
