Unfortunate draw with Djokovic, but I hope he enjoyed the experience.

This is what Nole said about the match:

"I'm happy that I'm through in straight sets, but it's not the performance I was looking for", Djokovic confessed. "I didn't expect him to play so many short balls with so many changes of pace. He didn't give me a lot of rhythm and it's the first match. I haven't had a lot of practice here having arrived two days ago, but it's alright, hopefully I can improve my game towards the end of the tournament."

Hey,

I am going to be there as well for qualies and one or two days of MD. Unfortunately I will miss the first qualifying round though, so I hope Flavio will make it through

I saw Flavio at Wimbledon qualies in 2007 and 2008 and both times the losses came to players that could completely overpower him and were consistent enough (Mello and Snobel), yet not overly impressive. Whether they could capitalize on Flavio's weak serve was a key factor against all opponents. Flavio was way too strong for another powerhitter last year as well: João Souza, who was just waaaay too error-prone and had no experience whatsoever on grass. Moreover, he could not handle Flavio's nifty game. He also beat Mirnyi, but I missed most of that match as I was supporting Edouard Roger-Vasselin in a key match against Sorensen at that stage. I heard Flavio played amazing tennis in that one though, and I did see the end of it and it was extremely exciting.

Anyways, Flavio is pretty good on grass if he doesn't get overpowered. He's really skillfull, has great volleys, great footwork and great tactics. His serve is a major weakness of course, and if his opponent serves well he is under continuous pressure. He should be able to beat most players at Roehampton, but there are some players who will completely demolish him.

I am really praying he will win Q1. Supporting Flavio at Wimbledon are some of my best tennis memories ever. I also watched his doubles qualifying matches in 2007, with Economidis. The final match against Lipsky/Martin was excruciatingly painful, as they were completely thrashed, but the match against Bopanna/Zovko was amazing. Such a nail-biting match, which was stopped several times due to rain, moved over to the next day, and included Flavio and Kostas saving several MPs. It might sound silly, but this doubles qualifying match is perhaps the most tense I have ever been at a real-life match, and I have seen a lot of live tennis

Anyways, if you're there, it'd be great to meet up :yeah:

After the final in Noumea to start the season, Cipo has 5 match wins, 3 in ATP qualifying events, and has lost 7 straight matches. His ranking is down to 212 in the world, and he will lose 45 points from Belgrade this week.

Hopefully Flavio can progress past these tough times and make some movements back to the top 100. His next scheduled tournaments are in Madrid qualifying starting tomorrow and then RG qualifying. Good luck to him in future tournaments!

Filo V.
05-08-2010, 05:09 AM
Here is Flavio's draw for the Madrid qualifying:

(1) CHELA, Juan Ignacio ARG v AGUILAR, Jorge CHI
CIPOLLA, Flavio ITA v (13) BOZOLJAC, Ilija SRB

Not a kind draw for Cipo at all. Bozoljac will probably be too much in the state Flavio is in now, and Chela is in a different league entirely. He has 14 pts to defend for a QR2 last year, and that probably isn't going to be defended. His ranking could be really bad within the next month if he doesn't start winning.

Good luck Flavio, hope you prove me wrong and qualify.

Filo V.
05-08-2010, 01:50 PM
Flavio beat Bozoljac 7-5 6-2 and will play Chela tomorrow for a spot in the MD of Madrid. Good win, and good luck tomorrow!

Filo V.
05-10-2010, 03:26 AM
Flavio lost 6-2 6-3 and held serve 2 times out of 8 service games in the match. Unfortunately, his lack of a serve or real power is shown up against most ATP players, especially consistent hard hitters of the ball as Chela is. He gained 16 points for winning his first round match, so he doesn't go away with nothing to take away positive from the week, unfortunately he will still lose 20 points and drop down the rankings again next Monday.

Next stop: French Open qualifying.

Ha, it's Gicquel, so not a worldbeater.

Yeah, "Pushimon" destroyed that scrub Chipolata with 29 winners (against 13 for that pusher)...
Good for the game.

No need to come into a cheering thread if you are not a Cipolla fan

Anyways, pretty swift dismissal 3-6 2-6, unfortunately, but at least he got to a 2R on his worst surface :yeah:

If you don't like Flavio, what is the sense of coming there

Not disappointed by Flavio, good tournament, considering the surface ;)

Flavio has a couple months to go to gain points before he has to start defending points from last season, so the next few weeks will be very important or his top 100 position will be in jeopardy. He plays the Dallas challenger this upcoming week and then Miami so let's see if he can win a few matches before the tour heads to clay.

Flavio won one match in the Dallas challenger after Indian Wells, beating Bogomolov 6-4 6-1 in the first round before losing badly to Andreev in the second round. In Miami, he lost 3-6 5-7, losing serve 6/10 times. He's had a pretty consistent, good season overall in beating plays like Seppi, Bogomolov, Gicquel and Davydenko, but it's not going to be enough to retain his top 100 ranking without some wins before he starts defending heavy points in May. Hopefully with the tour turning to clay, those wins will come for him. His next scheduled event is Casablanca in two weeks from this Monday.
