he was injured.(he suffered a shoulder injury i think at Amsterfoot in 2004. Where he defeated Gonzo in the final. ) He tried coming back last year but had to pull out of many tournaments as his injury was not completely heeled.

You misunderstood me, I mean "retired of the tournament" yet... It's not the first time that Martin finally appears in a main draw since that time and then finally withdraws. I hope that finally could play this time :)

Simply incredible player :worship: just not lucky enough when you get injured and ill for such a long period of time. He's the kind of player I see playing and enjoy watching immediately. I just see him - click! He had a top 3 serve on a good day, and what a no-compromise play he can show on his backhand side, especially.

Hopefully he can at least play for some more time with decent results.

Action Jackson
02-19-2007, 11:23 AM
Verkerk ripped Coria a new arsehole in that match, the big booming serves and the backhand were firing this day.

About that run at RG, in the 2nd round match with Horna was huge, cause Horna took out Federer in straight sets and had a match point in the 4th set, but couldn't lose it and the big Dutchman took his opportunity from there.

Martin Verkerk: My shoulder is fully recovered 21-02-2007

It has been quite some time since anyone believed that Martin Verkerk would ever return to the tennis court. There were even times when Verkerk, the victim of a shoulder injury (two operations) and Pfeiffer, had doubts that were stronger than the will to fight back. But the giant from Alphen aan den Rijn will be making a comeback at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament after an absence of two and a half years from the ATP tour. The event is already memorable in and of itself, but Verkerk wants to make it even more memorable, with a surprising and unforgettable performance on the courts

So, youíre finally back?ď
Luckily, yes. Itís about time I returned to top-level tennis. My last ATP match was in 2004 in Amersfoort and it feels like a century ago. And now Iím finally ready to make a comeback. Itís great that itíll be in my own country and in the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. Iím hoping for full stands and plenty of support from tournament visitors. Thatís important to me, particularly now.Ē

How fit are you really? ď
Let me start by clarifying something: my shoulder is fully recovered. The injury was successfully treated and the joint has been working perfectly for months now. With regard to how fit I am, Iím still working to strengthen myself. My speed on the courts is not yet optimal. Iím very conscious of that and of the need to lose a few pounds. My American fitness coach Mhyrlito Daniels and I have been working hard for the last seven weeks and Iíll be going right back to the US to continue my physical training after the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. Donít ask me how things are going to go during the match this evening, because I have no idea after having been away for two and a half years.Ē

What do you know about your opponent, the South African Rik de Voest?
ďNot much to be honest. Heís supposed to be a solid player who doesnít make many mistakes. Raemon Sluiter has played against him a few times in the past, so I asked him for some tips. Whether the draw was good to me or not is something I canít really say. After being away for two and a half years, any opponent is a difficult opponent.Ē

Tjerk Bogtstra has been working with you this week. Is he going to be your new coach?
ďI definitely need a coach and Iíd like to have Tjerk as my coach. For now though, weíve agreed to work together this week - nothing more, nothing less. I really appreciate what Tjerk is doing for me this week. It shows what a good relationship we have.Ē

Does your comeback here mean that youíll also be available for the Davis Cup team?ďI canít give you a serious answer to that question at this point. Only if I feel that the tournaments next month in Indian Wells and Key Biscayne go well will I start thinking about the Davis Cup. Now that you mention availability, thereís one thing I have no doubts about and thatís my willingness to play for Oranje. No questions in my mind about that at all.Ē

How often have you thought that youíd never again play tennis in the past two years? ďTo be honest, more often than I care to remember. I am just incredibly happy to be here today and to be able to play tennis again. Iíve had some tough blows to deal with in the last few years. Each time I had to stand back up and brush myself off I wondered whether it was worth it. But tonightís the big night and Iím really looking forward to it. Obviously, Iím going to be a bit nervous and tense, but I know Iím going to enjoy myself.Ē

Yes, indeed - I'm no fan of his, but it's good to have him back on the tour. At least he didn't get blasted off court, he managed to give a good match, especially when you take into acount he's been away for more than two years...

I did notice Martin being a bit 'puffy', though. He should try and leave the beers behind, should he really want to make a true comeback!
