Baghdatis def Nieminen 3-6 6-3 6-2 to make Marseille final

Not the greatest performance from Baghdatis, but it was good enough to get the job done in this match.

He started slowly and Nieminen played well tactically and Baghdatis was making errors. Then he tightened up his game and was able to make inroads and exposed the 2nd serve of the Nieminen and turned the match around from there.

The Baghdatis dropshot was a big winner for him in this match and good week for Jarkko coming back from ankle problems.

Now Marcos take out the Toad or Simon in the final.

As bilbo would say "Expected win".

Jarkko were aggressive(for once) in first set, then he started to play passive again and lost... nothing new, sadly. With aggressive&attacking playing he would have done it.

Nah. Jarkko played his usual cat-and-mouse tactics well in the 1st set, but didn't have an answer when Marcos found his shots in the 2nd. By attacking Jarkko would have lost it in straight sets.

Did we look other game? Since Jarkko was far more aggressive&attacking more in first than after that. His shots was far more deep than usually and even more power as well. Attacking doesn't mean going on to net, but not using those "middle of the ground" slow shots.

For an "injured" player he seems to be playing well.

No doubts about this one, the better player won and as for whether Jarkko was passive or not, well to an extent, but he has been watching Oscar Hernandez and tried to sneak in some serve/volley.

I just don't think that by playing aggressive&attacking Jarkko would have won. :) It just would've given Marcos a target which he was missing in the beginning.

Jarkko moved Marcos in the start and he did hit all his shots deep and wide. After first set he had all his shots in the middle of the ground just giving Marcos chance to play his game and he took it. It's always same. Jarkko surely can't shoot trough like ie. Federer, but he shouldn't make it so easy to attack for top players, or he will never win big players if they are playing any decent level.

Anyway it's still better sign and good result to make it to semis.

Not so sure about your match analysis, but with that I agree completely. :wavey:

An excellent result for Marcos, showing this kind of consistency is important for him. Now take the title tomorrow :D Jarrko made a good comeback here, the tournament will be good for his confidence.

I agree with your analysis. I didn't see this particular match, but the same problem has been there for quite a long time. When Jakke plays his own game, he is able to hit deep and well placed shots. All too often he changes his game and starts hitting short and weak shots to the middle. He likes to think that he is changing the tempo, but in reality he is giving the intiative to the opponent. The result is that the opponent finds his rhythm and feels confident. After this, it's very difficult to turn the match around. Jarkko should stick to what he does best. This happened against Benneteau, fortunately Jarkko was able to recover in the third set.

The main problem is still the second serve. He really should do something about it. The opponent always has the mental edge, when Jarkko has to rely on the second serve. His game is very consuming because he has to work very hard for every point. He rarely gets any easy games because of his serve.

Having said all this, I still think that Jarkko has the game to do some good things this year. Nadal should be scared, we might have a Finnish winner at the French Open!

I assume he will be in trouble with the ATP because I cannot believe this is allowable. To continue playing current event and withdraw from next with injury.

Losing early in AO was best thing to happen to him. It forced him to settle down & learn to win matches in best of 3 sets to get his ranking back. No more showing up for Majors then goofing off the rest of the yr. He has yet to prove that he can beat top players in less than 5 sets.
