Pretty good effort from Fish to lose a match without taking a set where he won 29/31 points on his first serve :hatoff:

Ajmo big guy! I don't see how he stands any chance against Safin, but then it could be Becker bearing in mind the closeness of the AO encounter.... just keep serving well, and you'll have people declaring the death of tennis by the end of the week.

Ivo continues to win this week. His results are totally unpredictable. He could beat Becker or Safin in breakers or he could lose to them, a better run than was to be expected already though.

He's had his fun, now someone knock him out.

I've always preferred players who have a backhand of some description.

Nothing against the guy, I just hate to see a guy with pretty much one exceptional shot because he's lucky enough to be 6'10'' - he has every right to be where he is but I'll always be rooting for the guy who is able to hit a decent topspin lob, backhand dropshot, forehand volley.

Yes i'm with you. Becker is a inexperienced player with a big serve and inconsistent from the baseline. Altough he is learning to play well under his new coach Tarik benhabilles.(ivo got trained temporarily by him last year.)

Safin's got a lot of experience although Safin beat Karlovic in thier last year meeting in Toronto in a very close match.

I suspect the organisers made the surface lightning fast to favour Roddick's serve - but they didn't expect that Karlovic would go on a rampage.

I hope he wins this.

I severely doubt that everyone his height has the ability to serve the way he does, he's had to work hard on that serve to make it the weapon that it is. And he can certainly volley, I've seen enough evidence of that over the last few years in matches where he's knocked off some big names.

I agree. As to his serve, I'll bet most club players close to his height don't serve anything like he does. I play with a 6'7 guy at home and he is wild as fuck...highly dangerous to partner in doubles. I'm only 5'9 yet I am the better server (despite hitting 5df in 1 game today...and still holding serve :haha: :o ...Truc - Coria's record has been beaten!) and the better player

I did say he has an exceptional serve. The rest of his game is average at best and his backhand is fugly.

But he can't be banned from the Tour for that

Besides, as several have said before, if he were that much of a "nuisance," he's be in the top 20 and winning titles. Most players are finding a way past him.

scoobs
02-16-2007, 11:18 PM
Not trying to ban him - I said he deserves to be where he is and I have no objection to him playing.

I just don't like what he does. I don't like that a terrific player can come out and get edged in tiebreaks because Karlovic is having a huge serving day. Thankfully it doesn't happen that often.

I think it will be Becker actually, but Karlovic would be the underdog against the winner of Safin-Becker anyway. If somehow he gets through to the final, then they will just slow the court speed again, so tennis will rise from the dead.

Karlovic batters Fish

FISH BATTERED

Karlovic followed up his victory over American second seed James Blake with a stunning exhibition of serving against Fish, the world number 25.

The unseeded Croat blasted 17 aces and dropped only 10 points on serve to leave Fish, a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open last month, chasing shadows.

"After being injured for almost six months last year, I didn't expect to do this well, so I am very happy," Karlovic said.

"I think each match I am playing better and serving better."

The 6ft-10in Karlovic, ranked 103, won the first-set tiebreak 7-2 and broke Fish in the third game of the second set before going on to reach his third ATP Tour semi-final.

"It's basically a crap-shoot when you play him," Fish said. "It doesn't really feel like tennis.

"It's not often you play a match where you are excited to reach 40-30. He serves so well and you just don't know where it's going."

Later on Friday, top seed Andy Roddick and holder Andy Murray attempt to reach the last four. Roddick plays fellow American Vince Spadea while Briton Murray takes on Lee Hyung-taik of South Korea.

Considering the amount of money invested in Ivo Karlovic by the Croatian Tennis Federation (it is exactly 0 Euros, yes ZERO!) it is a miracle a 2m 08 cm guy plays professional tennis at all.

Had Ivo been given the conditions of Ljubicic or Ancic we would have seen much more of him. He would at least have a decent backhand.
So:
GO IVO!!!!!

I then hit 2 DF's in the next set, winning it 6/1 without facing a bp. I'd be a gambler's nightmare :haha:

Anything I play, whether Club matches, or Uni matches, I tend to win from behind...and choke away leads. So, whilst I wouldn't be up there with a Paulo, or a Misha, I wouldn't be far behind :haha:

The thing I don't understand with Karlovic is that his game apart from his volleying (which is pretty average itself) doesn't seem to improve. He has so much to improve on yet its always looked like the same since I saw him in 2004. I guess training doesn't apply to 7ft numpties.

Becker should get rid of him tonight, but it would be cool (and very amusing) if he goes on to win the title, given that he'd be beating either Murray or Roddick - 2 players who get most frustrated when things don't go their way :haha:

It must be difficult to hit groundstrokes from that height...he would have to bend a fair bit, and his knees are obviously suffering, certainly at the moment.
