I actually think a big surprise could happen. Everything seems to be sooo much in favour of the Russians. If Forget is as good as he thinks he is and can develop some extra motivation out of the role of the underdogs, everything is possible. It also depends on who will finally walk on the court for Russia.

Having said that, these two are my favourite DC-teams by far and I am sick of losing one at the QF stage for the third time in a row.

13 Mar 2007 - Small Sport Arena "Luzhniki", Moscow, Russia
Russia’s top two return to face France

Nikolay Davydenko and Mikhail Youzhny will be back in the Russian team for April’s quarterfinal against France, after missing the first round.

By recalling world No. 4 Davydenko and Youzhny, currently ranked No. 17, captain Shamil Tarpischev is taking no chances in what will be Russia’s third quarterfinal meeting with France in three years. Also on the team are Marat Safin and Igor Andreev, the hero of Russia’s impressive away win against Chile in February.

"Now, we have all our top players available, which is good news," said Tarpischev, who also named last year’s surprise package Dmitry Tursunov and teenager Evgeny Korolev, hitting partner for the 2006 final, to the squad.

The defending champions will host France on clay in Moscow’s Small Sport Arena "Luzhniki" on 6-8 April. Russia has won their quarterfinal clashes for the past two years, but those ties have always been a close call, Andreev clinching victory against Paul-Henri Mathieu in a fifth rubber in Moscow in 2005, and three of the four live rubbers in last year’s quarterfinal in Pau going to five sets, before Tursunov secured the win against Richard Gasquet in the fourth match.

It seems the psychological impact of Russia’s come-from-behind win over France in the 2002 final in Paris has had a far-reaching effects for both nations. For France, it marked the start of a three-tie losing streak against Russia, while Russia has lifted the Davis Cup trophy twice since Youzhny handed his country its first title by recovering from two-sets-to-love down against Mathieu in 2002. Youzhny remains the only man in Davis Cup history to achieve this feat in the decisive fifth rubber of a Davis Cup final.

Kolya and his brother said last year (even before DC final) that he would like to skip DC next year and concentrate on individual events etc. But as next match against France will be in Moscow and on caly right belore clay season, looks like Kolya doesn't mind playing it.

Russia has selected Youzhny, Davydenko, Safin, and Andreev to play against France on April 6-8. It will be in Russia on red clay indoors. Gasquet will likely be leading France and it would be stunning if Monfils wasn't there, considering his results on clay. Clement and Grosjean just are not clay court players. Here's an article about the tie:

3rd round at the AO, not very good at all. Semi's at rome LAST year, saying that, he never had the toughest draw. Haas playing mediocre at the time, ginepri hates clay, santoro can be tricky and roddick last year on any surface was pretty gash. So thats why you think he should be picked for the davis cup?

It's not rumours, he gave an interview to the French tennis magazine in January or December, and said he didn't feel like playing Davis Cup anymore. Because now that he has won it once, it's not as important and as appealing for him as it used to be ( at this). Plus he said that he plays a lot all year, and the DC is messing up with his personal schedule and adding too much of work. So now he feels he should focus on his personal results and stop 'wasting' time and playing on different surfaces because of DC.
But he also said at the time that if the others were injured and they needed him against France he'd be there to play.

@Truc: How will you watch the matches? Do you have a dish?

Why would Forget replace Clement with Grosjean? Clement and Llodra already played many doubles matches. Is Clement injured?

EDIT:

http://sport.france2.fr/tennis/coupedavis/29685007-fr.php

Grosjean will possibly play on Sunday in case PHM or Gasquet either disappoint or have injuries.
Gasquet might even play on Saturday.

If it goes to a 5th rubber, Grosjean will probably play for France.
That's the reason why Forget got rid of Clément. Clément is fine, he's not injured, but Forget thinks Grosjean has the best chance in a decisive rubber.@Truc: How will you watch the matches? Do you have a dish? No, but we get France Télévision in Berlin with "Kabel Deutschland" as a cable provider now.

If it goes to a 5th rubber, Andreev will probably play against PHM.
The 2005 tie comes to mind. ;)

You're kidding right? You really think Forget would trust PHM to play a decisive fifth rubber? :tape:

I also think this will be decided on sunday.

But both teams can win... I think that depends on Gasquet performance. He must win against Youzhny and he can defeat Davydenko. France will hardly lose doubles.

Youzhny vs Mathieu will be the decisive match if Davay win against Gasquet, as I think it will happend. And it's 50% / 50%

Truc
04-05-2007, 07:20 PM
France will hardly lose doubles.Grosjean-Llodra never play together (they must have played once together), Grosjean isn't a doubles player. That's everything but a safe point for France.
Youzhny vs Mathieu will be the decisive match if Davay win against Gasquet, as I think it will happend. And it's 50% / 50%Again: if Grosjean is fit and feels OK, he will probably play. Forget said that clearly today: "S’il faut disputer un match à enjeu dimanche, Seb est celui qui possède le meilleur profil pour en sortir vainqueur" (if we have to play a decisive rubber on Sunday, Seb is the one with the best profile to win that match"). That's the reason why France is playing without Clément-Llodra in doubles, it's a big sacrifice, it shows Forget really wants to have Grosjean in singles.
If Mathieu plays a great match tomorrow, maybe Forget will trust him. But that's not sure at all.

I didn't think about that. Grosjean needs to be in the team to be able to play the singles rubber on sunday.

No, but we get France Télévision in Berlin with "Kabel Deutschland" as a cable provider now.

Same here. I thought I remembered that you already could watch the french channels before Kabel Deutschland added them to their "Digital Free" package. btw in case you didn't know yet: they just added 26 new channels, among them France 24 (in french and english) and Euronews France.

By the way, any chance of a livestream for this tie?

Right now, no, but I suggest to check the usual suspects tomorrow. SOPcast, MaxTV, etc. Those already had streams for russian DC matches in the past.

France can play with Gasquet/Mathieu and still win :p

I think Forget would play Gasquet on all 3 days if he could. :help: Currently though, Gasquet's fitness won't hold up, which puts Forget in a tight spot.

It's very tough. Should he trust a choker who has lost the 5th rubber twice against Russia or should he trust someone not as good on clay but better mentally? :o
