I guess it might be the first or second time you hear about this record ! :) If this record has not been changed in recent 3-4 years , The man who holds this unique record is Vincent Spadea (USA) !!. In Tuesday, June 20, 2000 he set an ATP Tour record by losing his 21st consecutive match ! He was beaten 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 by Sebastian Grosjean of France in the first round of the Nottingham Open.
Spadea, was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open in 1999. He reached the semifinals of an event in Lyon, France,October 1999, but lost to Lleyton Hewitt and didn't win any match until Wimbledon 2000 that he beat Rusedsky 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3 6-7(10) 9-7 !

The second one is 20 consecutive defeats by Gary Donnelly in 1986.

Let's review Spadea's 21 defeats:

Lyon, France Semifinal Hewitt, Lleyton (AUS) 3-6 3-6

Stuttgart Indoor, Germany R64 Zabaleta, Mariano (ARG) 4-6 6-3 1-6

Paris Indoor, France R64 El Aynaoui, Younes (MAR) 2-6 4-6

Moscow, Russia R32 Tarango, Jeff (USA) 6-7(5) 2-6

Adelaide, Australia R32 Martin, Alberto (ESP) 2-6 2-6

Sydney, Australia R32 Voinea, Adrian (ROM) 6-3 6-7(5) 4-6

Australian Open, Australia R128 Voinea, Adrian (ROM) 6-7(1) 6-4 6-4 3-6 2-6

Memphis, TN, U.S.A. R32 Sa, Andre (BRA) 4-6 3-6

Scottsdale, AZ, U.S.A. R32 Rios, Marcelo (CHI) 4-6 4-6

Indian Wells, CA, U.S.A. R64 Kafelnikov, Yevgeny (RUS) 1-6 1-6

Miami, FL, U.S.A. R64 Ivanisevic, Goran (CRO) 5-7 2-6

Monte Carlo, Monaco R64 Zabaleta, Mariano (ARG) 2-6 6-1 5-7

Barcelona, Spain R64 Vinciguerra, Andreas (SWE) 4-6 2-6

Rome, Italy R64 El Aynaoui, Younes (MAR) 2-6 3-6

Hamburg, Germany R64 Schuettler, Rainer (GER) 4-6 6-3 3-6

World Team Cup, Dusseldorf, Germany :

RR Kucera, Karol (SVK) 3-6 3-6
RR Schuettler, Rainer (GER) 5-7 6-3 1-6
RR Tillstrom, Mikael (SWE) 3-6 3-6

Roland Garros, France R128 Henman, Tim (GBR) 5-7 5-7 4-6

London / Queen's Club, England R64 Gimelstob, Justin (USA) 6-2 4-6 1-6

Nottingham, England R32 Grosjean, Sebastien (FRA) 1-6 6-4 5-7

Wimbledon, England R128 Rusedski, Greg (GBR) 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3 6-7(10) 9-7  :woohoo:

R64 Portas, Albert (ESP) 4-6 3-6 3-6

After WM 2000 he lost 11 of 13 matches again.I cant understand what has been wrong with him in that season. Before these 21 defeats He was 25 years old ranked 19.

Wimbledon, England R128 Rusedski, Greg (GBR) 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3 6-7(10) 9-7  :woohoo:

Correctly, the score was 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3 6-7(8) 9-7 because Spadea lost 4th set tie-break 8-10 after Rusedski had saved two match points in that TB. In the 5th set Rusedski saved another match point at 4:5 and broke to go 7:6 up! So Spadea should lose also this match 6-8 in the fifth :D

I just can't understand what motivates Dick Norman to continue playing professional tennis. He might be short in money. But with looking at his results in recents months, I guess he has spent much money travelling a lot of countries and then losing in first rounds and getting not conciderable prize money (Even in doubles he has got terrible results).

He won Donetsk challenger in september 2007 and then this is his playing activity until today:

Orleans, France R32 Wessels, Peter (NED) 7-6(3) 6-7(5) 4-6

Grenoble, France R32 Karanusic, Roko (CRO) 3-6 2-6

Mons, Belgium R32 Pavel, Andrei (ROU) 4-6 5-7

Rennes, France R32 Walter, Ludovic (FRA) 4-6 2-4 RET

Andrezieux, France R32 Benneteau, Julien (FRA) 3-6 4-6

Heilbronn, Germany R32 Lacko, Lukas (SVK) 4-6 2-6

Bergamo, Italy R32 Haase, Robin (NED) 5-7 4-6

Belgrade, Serbia R32 Vicente, Fernando (ESP) 6-4 6-1
R16 Luzzi, Federico (ITA) 4-6 7-6(5) 4-6

Besancon, France R32 Istomin, Denis (UZB) 0-3 RET

Bogota, Colombia R32 Bellucci, Thomaz (BRA) 3-6 2-6

Salinas, Ecuador R32 Lorenzi, Paolo (ITA) 5-7 3-6

San Luis Potosi, Mexico R32 Stadler, Simon (GER) 4-6 6-3 2-6

Leon, Mexico R32 Zeballos, Horacio 6-7 3-6

------------------------------

Also 2 other well known players are on the losing streak : Economidis and Safin.

Economidis has lost 7 matches in a row (Ignoring Q in Miami):

Busan, Korea R16 Minar, Ivo (CZE) 2-6 3-6

Bratislava, Slovakia R32 Tipsarevic, Janko (SRB) 6-1 6-7(3) 4-6

Australian Open, Australia R128 Gonzalez, Fernando (CHI) 7 4-6 6-7(2) 1-6

Heilbronn, Germany R32 Golubev, Andrey (RUS) 1-6 0-6

Bergamo, Italy R32 Smeets, Robert (AUS) 6-4 6-7(5) 2-6

Belgrade, Serbia R32 Jones, Alun (AUS) 123 3-6 6-7(6)

Besancon, France R32 Haehnel, Jerome (FRA) 2-6 2-6

And he lost in Miami qualies to GGL 1-6 1-6

--------------

Safin:

Australian Open 08, Australia R64 Baghdatis, Marcos (CYP) 4-6 4-6 6-2 6-3 2-6

Dick Norman has a blog, www.dicknorman.be, in Dutch (Flemish).

His wife had a baby daughter at the end of last year, he was travelling with his wife and baby most of the time in recent months and his parents and wife's parents also came over to holiday in Mexico and support him. So clearly he isn't travelling just for the tennis.

However, in his latest update he admits that his physical shape was not good recently, but he has not given up yet, he is planning to take a fairly long break and try get into shape again.

I'm not sure about his real motivation, but maybe he won't really come back, at least I find it hard to believe he will get any results anymore considering his age and family.
