Usual not nice article - from cooperativa.cl:

The Chilean tennis already has a representative in the quarterfinals of the ATP of Vina del Mar, as soon as Nicolas Massú (42º) conquered Spanish Gorka fraile (135º), 6-3, 6-2 to be crowned winner of the Group 3 of the Movistar Open.

Without being shown in agreement with his play, being reproached to each moment, the Olympic champion sufficed with a performance of regular downward to defeat to a rival that gave him little problems.

Massú's next opponent will be the Argentine Sergio Roitman (80º), who beat his countryman Mariano Zabaleta (191º), by a double 6-4.

The viñamarino continues being little fine in his shot, with a backhand that fails too much, but besides all uncomfortable, disconnected. This Wednesday reached him to remove ahead the match before a discreet adversary, but is worrying to think about a more complicated collision as will be with Roitman.

Even the coach Massú, the Argentine Gabriel Markus, the form displeased him in which faced the commitment his pupilo. And the fact is that continued with those recriminations, losing the calm, what caused erred him shots that seemed easy.

He began well, with a break in the fourth one game, but then had a "gap" that caused yielded him its remove in the following play with two double fault.

It seemed incredible, but the little consistency of Fraile and the capacity of reaction of Massú avoided a catastrophe al to break of return. That was sufficient so that the Olympic champion was directed to a 6-3 in the first set, that assured his step to the quarters.

The polite task and the massages that offered him in the left thigh, what to a certain extent showed the tense thing that was, they caused the national to relax, that start with firmness the second set with a break.

Massú dominated tranquilly until obtaining a new breaking in the seventh one game that the table served left him to remove and to sign his triumph.

For what it's worth - so much slang that I just put it through the free translation site and whatever came up, came up - didn't bother to try to clean the translation up.

From lacuarta.cl:

Neither the models dare to make changes of lights al Nico. For nobody is a mystery that the fanged one walks brígido and although had a victorious début, this time neither in its baticueva him is seen japy. "Two years ago that me not the knees", cursed time and again when Capdeville lacked the respect and despite that the Aunt Sonia tried it to throw p' up with applauses, insisted on being treated to itself of "shame". Is not new it of the 2 of Chile. The ones that get they say it that as from New Haven, last August, that does not earn two parties al thread and more on top in Australia the Serbian one Novak Djokovic gave freights him it more brígida of the last time, Massú is emputecido because nothing leaves him, while the Feña continues it breaking.

But yesterday the Nico seems that threw away the obsession after the training and calmed the passions of the country raquetero, that wants to see it as rock before the rusoskis by Cup Davis. "I am tranquil and I know that I am doing it well".

Up and down Nobody better than Massú knows what is to be up and down. Two years ago in Vineyard was the king, but now they plan it at 4 o'clock in the afternoon because González will be the main course this night. But eye that in its words there is not envies. Al contrary, "one never can be favorite always. Only Federer has achieved it in the last 10 years, but to all the others at times goes us well and at times badly", was consoled. Therefore it is that him does not give urticaria that today they ask him more by González that by he himself. "I am put since the 15 years in this and has always been equal. When I gained the Olympic medals, to Fernando they asked him for me", alleges starting of the bad milk of the odious comparisons. Total, "to me the unique thing that imports is me that the right run me and not if I am the 5 or the 10 of Latin America".

Vodkazo happy as well as Hans Gildemeister relaxed after the successful début of the Nico, since "what is important is that gain and plunges confidence", the "Vampi" did not do a slice to that already feels that pande the cúnico by the Davis. "I have the head here and in the next week and obvious that there is pressure", recognized. But is neither swum of the other world. "I know how to handle this. Besides, the most important tournaments of my life I have earned them not arriving well and if the 2006 I did 4 ends is because me the power. I know that I go for good road".

Nico and Roitman have never played against each other.

If Nico can calm down, I think Roitman is very doable.

He needs to just calm down. I know he has a lot of points to defend during the LA swing so that must be making his crazy, plus all the sh*t going on at the tournament, plus Davis Cup.

The only real threat to the title now should be Gonzalez.

So tranquilo sweetie....

Terra was pretty much the same as cooperativa except his:

"I cannot be that go winning and that not enjoying what I am doing in a tennis court", maintained.

In that aspect, the Nico added that "I arrived at the Olympics without wining a match, and I won it; in Madrid also I arrived thus and I was a finalist, now I am thus. I have earned tournaments with that degree of insanity that I have, because I have been playing badly, and nobody thought that I was going to beat him".

I don't know what's happening to our Nico.

From Radio Cooperativa:

The Argentine coach of the viñamarino commented that in spite of the victory before Spanish Gorka Fraile, he did not see well to his pupilo and with little motivation.

A critical fort slid after the victory of Nicolas Massú, his coach Gabriel Markus, who indicated that to the second national racquet spirit lacked him and that that conditioned many errors with his backhand.

The coach Argentine of the number 42º of the world, commented that one must improve many aspects for the quarterfinals of the ATP of Vina del Mar.

"I do not him well, because his attitude was not the correct one, but what is important is that he has won", began Markus.

"Not the spirit of Nicolas functioned, not the backahnd. He has nothing to do that, neither the right. The few games in which was seen strong and with motivation is noted. What happens is that when he loses the confidence, his backhand that is its blow limper flame ??? more the attention and plays it very slow and passes to be defensive", added the coach of the second national racquet.

Therefore, Nicolas Massú should fight against his own problems to face in the quarterfinals against Argentine Sergio Roitman (80º) who conquered for a double one 6-4 to its countryman Mariano Zabaleta. (Cooperative.cl)

Nico...  I don't like reading this.

From cooperativa.cl:

The Olympic champion again was consulted of his ups and downs of mind during the play and affirmed that has to leave behind that aspect in the next encounter with Sergio Roitman if wants the to achieve the title in Vina del Mar.

Nicolas Massú (42º) has clearly what passes him and already expressed it in previous days. He coaches well, arrives with desires, but when confronts some adverse situation during the matches is disinclined and that complicates him the encounters. This Wednesday occurred him again before Spanish Gorka Fraile (135º), but said that is moment to finish with that if intends to be champion of the Movistar Open in Vina del Mar.

"In these two matches and in Australia, perhaps me there I am lowered when the things have not left me, but that in some moment has to pass, one must cut it now, I have played two matches thus, by luck I have earned with the experience that I have", maintained.

"Perhaps if in these two matches I was not as motivated that always I am, already I have to give me account that if I want to win the tournament, I have to change that", added.

Of all ways, Massú rescued the result that another opportunity to surpass gives him those aspects that are distressing it.

"What is important is to be in the quarterfinals and is always good to win, one participates to win, not for lose. What is important is to enter to the court and to win. Now, when I am playing, there are times that feel better, there are times that feel worse, but are things of the tennis, motivational things, but is not more than that", affirmed.

The viñamarino recognized that a lot has to do with this lack of motivation that bothers it during the matches, with what happened in the Australia Open, before the Serbian Novak Djokovic, that swept him in the first round for 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0.

"A little, the truth is that I was well prepared and the match with Djokovic I did not lose it because was so much the difference of tennis, but the same thing passed me, I lost the first one set and I descended of mind a little, because I did not feel I playing as wanted and perhaps that affected me a little when I arrived here", expressed

With regard to its suit with the Argentine Sergio Roitman by the step to semifinals, anticipated that will be very difficult by the characteristics of the rival one.

"I was coaching with him in Argentina last week, will be a difficult player because is a fighter, a boy that was a lot of time without being able to become in the ranking, is an example as the sportsman, because was six or seven years without becoming and today is among the 100 better than the world, is a player that itself does not deliver never, but I have more experience", analyzed.

"I am more tranquil, I know what has passed me these days and I am going to show that I am playing well and that what I am doing in a training I have to do it in a match", emphasized. (Cooperative.cl)

Nico practiced 3 hours today. :yeah: And he sounds more positive.

And latercera.cl thinks that it will be 4:00 Chile time too.

From latercera.cl:

Nicolas Massú (42º) ratified his desire to recover the best level with a view toward his clash before the Argentine Sergio Roitman (80º) in the quarterfinals of the ATP of Vina del Mar.

Because of it the "Vampire" responded this morning to one of the courts alternatives of the Naval Club The Salinas to coach for almost three hours, in a practice that had a high physical demand and tenística.

During the work with his coach, Gabriel Markus, the viñamarino showed different facets that give account themselves their state of present spirit; very assets for moments and by other uncomfortable with the court and the ball.

"The only form to improve is to coach and to coach. While more even in the court, better will be for my play", maintained after the exhausting morning day, where was followed by near 30 people.

On tomorrow's match against Roitman, the second national racquet aimed that is seen with chances to arrive at the semifinals, basically by a question of experience.

"I feel better, after to have won two matches without playing well. I think that I have good possibilities, because I face a player that does not have a lot of experience in the quarterfinasl of an ATP, and I have played many", explained.

Although the programming of Friday yet is not planned, the surest thing is that Massú among to the central court in the shift of the 16 hours, since the stellar day (22.00) is reserved for Fernando González .

he has a perfectly good backhand when he stays down on the ball, keeps his knees bent and his head down. I have seen it. Anyway, good luck to him.

He does. But historically most of the time, that's his weakest shot. That's why he runs around the ball so many times so he can hit a forehand.

He can work around it though as long as he doesn't open up the court too many times to his opponents.

And backhands are most players weak spot.

I'm also nervous... I wasn't, but I had the stupid idea of checking GM and people were talking about DC. Then this guy said he couldn't picture Nico beating Andreev or Safin or any other Russian, and someone replied "if you wanna underrate massu playing for chile, then be my guest", and some other guy said "massu isn't the same" "but he raises his level when he's playing for his country, there's enough evidence on that" and blah blah blah... and they ended up predicting a very loud Chile x USA final, with the audience being mean to Roddick and Chile winning...

Agreed Bloodletting. I watched him a lot last summer, and he just isn't focused.

It's not that he's not working hard - he is. He's extremely fit. Works very hard in practice. I watched countless practices so I feel that I can say that.

But when he gets out on to the court, it's like he's in another world. And if things start going wrong, it's worse.

I feel so bad for him. You can fix a bh that's not working. This is just from lack of confidence. And only wins will fix it. Lots of them.

 for Nico.

Gaby's take on the match. I would humbly add that Nico needs to play more aggressively.

From cooperativa.cl:

The coach of the Olympic champion, stood out that his pupilo began very badly the year and that should be calmed down to obtain positive results. Besides, qualified his pair to semifinals as abnormal.

The Argentine coach of Nicolas Massú, Gabriel Markus, confessed that his pupilo should improve a lot to reach its better tennis and that the advance to semifinals of the ATP of Vina del Mar itself due to a "coincidence".

"This was a very strange match, yet I cannot believe that Nicolas have passed this round. Al principle played very nervous and erratic before a Roitman spectacular, and later began to play looser what put nervous al rival, and with its experience took advantage of that situation", commented Markus.

"He is beginning badly, without believing in if same, not one must give advantages, because in a normal situation would be able to have lost. This was a coincidence", added the Argentine coach of the viñamarino.

Finally, Markus added that, "Nico has to play with more confidence and with more happiness". (Cooperative.cl)

I wish you had PM No1Rios. I know you think I'm being mean to the Chilean fans and Fernando, but I can't put in a post why I get so upset about everything.

if feña wins tonight will be 50/50 crowd tomorrow

for one side if feña reaches the final will #4, that's could be fantastic

and for the other side if nico wins and reaches the final he must win the final over lucho horna....

from both sides i will be happy... :yeah:

I'm not saying this because I don't want Nico to have to face Fernando tomorrow.

But I think Fena is insane to keep playing. He's exhausted. And he's taking a chance that he'll get injured for Davis Cup.

#4 can wait. He's got all year to get it. He doesn't need to kill himself this week to get it and possibly threaten Chile's chances in DC.

reading the GM thread i had an idea

we need to start a thread with a poll about the greatest nico's comebacks in his carrer...

i remember the Baires 02 vs Calleri, Palermo 03 vs PHM, RG 06 vs Malisse, Indian Wells 06 vs Calleri (again ), Olympic Games 04 doubles final (w/gonzo) vs Schuettler/Kiefer and today's comeback vs Roitman

I don't like it when Nico and Feña face each other, but whatever happens I am confident that the winner of that match will win Viña. I think Nico needs this more than Feña though, as NicoFan said, the 4th spot for Gonzo can wait. What we need now is for Massu to get some confidence back and a title in Viña will do just that, although Feña probably thinks its his turn now.

I think it was the best thing. I'm surprised Fernando played as much as he did. Rough physically and mentally to get to the finals of a Slam. Then travelling half way around the world. Playing three matches in front of his home country crowd.

Too much.

Now he can rest for three days and then prepare for DC.

Interview with Gaby from lun.com:

To jokes with which has more patience than Gandhi. Gabriel Markus tries to calm to an irate Nicolas Massú, who fails to contain the rage because him not the things during the morning training result of yesterday with the youthful Hans Podlipnik. The Argentine technician did not sleep anything the previous night. A pain in the zone of the appendix bothered it, although the doctors ruled out that be appendicitis. Despite it, Markus encourages to his pupilo and talks him after the tantrums.

Who they know to Massú they know that by character externalizes all. And they know also that when has been thus, trapped, almost without being given account obtains feats. But Markus wants to go beyond what the same Massú has called "that my insanity that permits me to win when nobody expects it".

"The objective is that Nico to stop having those error that no longer amaze, because they distract it and they impede that be prepared well", explains Markus.

-¿This is one of the common falls that has Massú or is something deeper?

-Nico is unstable, feels nervous, although that would should to tell it he and I not. He has facility to pass for the time being good to bad moments and vice versa. The idea is that be maintained always well.

-The circle of Massú says that he no longer feels so supported by his public. You see him thus?

-I do not feel that. He expects a lot more because it is his city, but to the extent that even the matches and the people see it with another disposition, they will begin to encourage it as he wants. The people perceives the state of spirit of the players, even when they are not inside the court.

-The foreign tennis players are surprised for the deal that have Massú and González, that they are very regaloneados. You agree?

-Is normal in a country where only there are two players. In Argentina does not pass so much because tennis players exist more, but here each result of them is national news.

-¿The criticisms by television they bothered you of Horacio de la Pena?

-Not so much as to bother me, but I believe, just as I told it in its moment, that is better to support al player before emitting certain criticisms, especially to a week of the Davis.

-Massú said that in the Davis surpasses all the problems of confidence. How do you see it and how analyze the option of Chile before Russia?

-Chile is favorite. By the heat, the slow court of La Serena, the condition of localities and because the Russians bring a team that is not the best. And as Nico says, he itself power a lot.
