Marat time to beat everyone in the draw for one more time. It's time, it's been 1.5 years.

dont be that persimistic

I'm not! I was thinking draw-wise: it's unlikely all of the three will be still in the tournament when Marat has to meet them. U know: in the final with the cup that has his name on it already!

I have a feeling that he'll meet someone big in the first 3 rounds. Hope I'm wrong. No I don't hope, I'm confident that the draw wouldn't matter as he'll pierce through it anyway. No kevlar*** saves from the bullet Marat is.

*** Kevlar- a material used in most bullet-proof vest manufactured around the world. Mostly used by the special forces in the armies, special counter-terrorism units of police, and in rare case on airplanes to protect varius aircraft components from flying debris. It can be used in conjunction with other durable materials, such as titaniumm which is often done to reduce weight. Those who carry a thicker layer of such attire (bomb experts, for example) for added protection usually carry less weapons and other gear with them, again to reduce weight. Those forces that need extra mobility usually wear light versions of Kevlar vest, as the material is very bulky- they rely on their professionalism and weaponry instead.

PS: Oops I forgot what I forgot that I was talking about Marat.

Well, it could've been better, but I'm sure Marat's not very angry at his fortune this time. Who do we see:
R2- Spadea or Blake-both strong opponents.
R3- Nalbandian (?) - very strong. but manageble
R4- Srichapham or Kuerten (unlikely?) - comparable to Nalbandian
Quarters- Agassi- does he need words?
I wouldn't predict further, but atleast there's no Federer in Marat's half.

Kiara
03-22-2004, 08:03 PM
So Nalbandian IS playing, good for him. But he's Marat's pigeon is he not? Then again thats not saying much since they havent played since 2002

Vass
03-22-2004, 08:16 PM
Marat leads 4-0 in H2H, but yeah, David kinda improved since then. Plus those were on clay and carpet, not hard.

Kiara
03-22-2004, 08:18 PM
heh, yeah he did, *kinda*! Go Daviiiiddd  but im not even looking that far, I just hope he doesnt get beat by Vince or James :o omg if he does he will top my shitlist

Vass

You're to tough with him Kiara.

Kiara
03-22-2004, 08:55 PM
I am usually tough with things/people that let me down...plus I want him to give me a good match with Nalbandian, I think David has it in him to beat Marat, especially if Marat plays like a dolt but I hope he doesnt and makes a match of it instead!

Jessi
03-22-2004, 09:04 PM
Marat, time to get down and dirty and go deep in another tournament. Redeem yourself and kick some ass this week.

Good luck and may the force be with you!

Aurora
03-22-2004, 10:55 PM
Not too bad I guess, I see perspectives... Nalby is a big question mark for me though. I still don't get him, probably cause I haven't seen him play enough.

Kiara
03-22-2004, 11:00 PM
what dont you get about him? he's what you call text book tennis.

Aurora
03-23-2004, 12:01 AM
As I said probably cause I havent watched him enough. I've seen a few of his big matches against Roddick and Federer, but nothing in his game striked me to remember much or I didn't pay attention. It's hard to explain (hence the not getting it), I'm eager to properly watch and 'discover' him.
Or maybe cause he kept "our" Malisse out of the Wimby final. oh yeah, I'm such the X Man fan  :tape:

merle
03-23-2004, 01:53 PM
Hi guys, do you really think Marat is stable enough now to beat Blake or Spadea? Both have been in good form lately!

Shadow
03-23-2004, 01:57 PM
He HAS to beat them. And i mean a player as Marat should beat them with no doubt
We will see if he can step up his game in Miami.

merle
03-23-2004, 02:59 PM
Well, that's the fun and thrill with Marat that you never quite know what to expect ("bad day at the office" - ). I DO hope he's become more mature & stable now!
BTW, Andrea, where this Russian?

Kiara
03-23-2004, 03:32 PM
If James plays his very best tennis, like he did in Perth, then yeah he can beat Marat, and Spadea (bleurgh) I dont know ....he had a good time in Scottsdale but who did he lose to in Indian Wells again? Mind you Spadea beat James in Scottsdale and if he can remember how, he's more than likely to do it again.

Has Spadea ever played Marat before?

Im sure marat is going to go ahead and win this thing to shut us up, cos we've been dissing him soo much over here, not that I have a problem with that

Aurora
03-23-2004, 04:54 PM
yeah, we're probabaly totally bugging him!

I wonder what he would think if he would read all this...

Article from Tennis Week:

Safin Looks Sharp In Practice

By Richard Pagliaro
03/24/2004

Strokes on the practice courts can be the tennis equivalent of new clothes in the fitting room mirror: everything looks good. Unburdened by the restrictive pressures of ranking points, financial rewards and vocal crowds, players swing away with the relaxed joy of rediscovered love.

Then there's Marat Safin.

The man who has turned tennis into a collision sport with his past penchant for racquet-destruction and emotional explosions is capable of many actions on court, but monotony isn't a part of his make up.

As qualifiers fought it out for precious positions in the Nasdaq-100 Open main draw and fellow pros traded strokes and jokes on the practice courts, the temperamental titan who regained his Grand Slam form by reaching the Australian Open final two months ago engaged in a spirited practice with Finnish lefthander Jarkko Nieminen inside the stadium.

About 28 fans sat scattered in various seats watching the pair pop potent topspin shots that jumped off the court and echoed throughout the stadium alternating with the steady squeal of sneakers to create a sound track of tennis effort.

Though both players have first-round byes — the 29th-seeded Nieminen will face either Todd Martin or Ivo Heuberger in the second round, while the 31st-seeded Safin awaits the winner of the all-American clash between James Blake and Vince Spadea — they played the final minutes of today's practice as if it were a match.

Sprinting to the sideline to hit a saving running forehand, Safin spun, changed direction and charged toward the net. It was a dazzling display of agility from the six-foot-four Safin, who correctly anticipated Nieminen's pass down the line only to knock the forehand volley into the net.

Shouting some self-critical phrases at himself, Safin picked up the ball that failed to clear the net and belted it into the 12th row of the stands with so much force the ball looked as altered as an altoid when it splattered against the stadium wall below the F section of bleachers.

Lashing his lefty inside-out forehand to Safin's forehand Nieminen frequently found the inside of the sideline with clean winners. Dripping with sweat, Safin was always on his toes shuffling laterally or surging forward. It was the fast footwork of an eager player who looks as fit as he was when he scorched Pete Sampras in straight sets to take the 2000 U.S. Open — one of seven titles he won that year. In his final service game of the practice, Safin really began to find his range, pounding crosscourt shots off both sides and moving forward to slam a pair of overhead winners.

As Ai Sugiyama stretched on the side of the court waiting her turn to practice, Safin motioned to play one more point. Then he slammed an ace down the middle. A smiling Safin took the last ball out of his pocket and smacked it out of the stadium. "Thank you!" Safin said to the small crowd, stopping to sign autographs for three kids before leaving.

A second-round casualty to Davide Sanguinetti in Miami last year, Safin faces a challenging second-round test from either Blake or Spadea, who started the month beating Blake, Andy Roddick and Nicolas Kiefer in succession to claim his first career tournament title in Scottsdale. Safin, who has never played Spadea, beat Blake 7-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in the fourth round of the Australian Open. Should Safin surpass the second round he could play eighth-seeded David Nalbandian in the third round.

Vera's match: Vera was a lot better. Severine got some injury (asked for a medical time out and got a heavy strap on her thigh) after the first set, but she didn't look a lot slower in the second set. vera was just better overpowering the French.
Dinara watched the first set of her match. She was in a great mood, talked to some guy (who, I understood, is with Vera). I wasn't really listenning what they were talking about excpet for one question from that guy. He asked Dinara whether Golovanov is really helping Marat. The way Dinara answered made me think that either someone else has asked that question before or the Safinas have doubts themselves. (basically, she confirmed bery emphatically (sp?))...

This guy asked Dinara whether Golovanov is helpful to Marat (i.e. helping him to improve) and Dinara was a little too emphatic to say yes. It sounded like they had been some other questions/discussions about Golovanov (ys was the first one to say here that it's a joke hiring Golovanov as Marat's coach).

Anyhoo: SUCCESS AGAINST SPADEA!!!

It's really  for Nastya, I was praying for her to not play so much, with doubles and everything... really too bad as nr 4 is now out of her reach for some time. (but Doha with Doha in her pocket, I can't wait to see her do some damage at the later clay tournies)

Me neither, Vince (swoon) is *rolling* in confidence right now plus if he plays well he'll have a chance of being picked to complete the US Davis cup team so he'll play with more determination than usual....I wont be surprised if Vince pulls this off.

Christines report

hi all,
well to say the least, the match was disappointing. As Marat himself said, he should have won it. But actually, I always felt that Spadea had the slight edge throughout the match. It was mainly because Marat was not really going for his shots like Vince was. He was cracking winners off of Marat's second serves, and Marat was not doing that on his.

Vince was also returning very well. I don't know if any of you saw the match or not, but it was a bit breezy and that was definitely affecting Marat's shots and serves although he did not blame the conditions for his loss.

I was in the photo pit for the entire match, right by where he kicked the wall (if any of you watched it on tv you will see me I'm sure) *lol* I went to his press conference afterwards, and he was pretty down. Just sad more than anything. He was not his usual jovial joking self. I asked him 3 questions... the 2 about the doubles and the last question about Spadea's game (if he was surprised at all). I'm not sure if the transcript is out or not, but it should be shortly. It was not a long interview so hopefully they will put up the complete transcirpt. I have no internet here at the tennis besides this free bellsouth booth, so can't report too much more.

I saw some of Robredo/Rochus this morning but since they had to dry the courts I only managed to watch 3 games before I had to leave for Marat's match. He should be playing doubles tomorrow, so I am looking forward to that!

Also just finished watching Moya/Sanchez and am on the way to watch Federer now then heading home. I took tons of pics until my camera battery died.. will get a new one before tomorrow!

Yeah that's true. He planned to to play many tournaments this year, but I think he'll reconsider. Miami hardly qualified as a tournamnt for him and so did Indian Wells. This two weeks will be a continuation of one more long holiday.

*sigh* Marat and his vacations. Its not even cute anymore. He'd better be heading straight to Monte Carlo and train his butt off for the clay season.
Get it together OAF!

I'd like some opinions on his second serve, dear analysts, it seems his opponents usually can get to it quite easily. Why and how to improve?

Guga's match... painful to watch. At least, I didn't watch Marat losing to Spadea. Have a good coverage here, but I'm not very interested too. Don't have any motivation to watch tennis.

yeesh this tournament is turning out to be a dud, and we almost lost Moya yesterday to David Sanchez :o ...all chips on Juan Monaco to win the tourney pls ;)

and Jessi I see you've jumped on the Fed Express, :yeah:

Lilly, Marat's second serve is the most predictable, conservative, second serves in the game, it's easy to read, lands too shallow and is easy to put away and unless he makes some drastic changes to it, he's definitely vulnerable as any halfway decent returner would just pounce on it. I dont know whats wrong could be something to do with his toss or the placement or maybe he's not hitting it with enough spin...

How to improve: What's Pete Sampras doing these days ? ;) Arguably the best second serve in tennis- the kick serve which pulls the oponent off the court, he hit hit second serve as hard as he hit his first but used waaay more spin on the second. Ferrero also has a good second serve imo, as does Andy...actually so does anyone who's name isnt Marat Safin or Taylor Dent ;)

He needs to hit it deep and maybe hit it with alot more spin, the more spin he uses on it the deeper it'll bounce.

Plus he should aim the second serve. If he aims the serve at his opponents weaker wing there is less chance of it coming back, instead of just firing it off and not caring where it lands as long as it's in the box. Once he has confidence in his second serve, his first serve will improve dramatically as well.

anyway thats just imho and I dont know much about this stuff but he needs to do something about it, and soon.

Im thinking Marat should play on the ladies tour, that way he might actually win a match ;)

Nasdaq-100 Open Day 6 Report: Venus, Roddick, Federer and MATCH OF THE YEAR!
Post By : NasdaqBallboy
03/28/04

What a phenomenal day it was. Third time in a row I got to work Stadium and I got an awesome treat. I've been at the Nasdaq-100 4 years and I'd never witnessed a match as great as the one I saw first up on Stadium Court. 2 guys giving it their all, leaving their guts on the court and playing what I think is Match of the Year. Anyone in the jam-packed crowd, or watching on the Tennis Channel would probably agree. That match was Vince Spadea vs. Marat Safin.

I had seen Vince Spadea's coach around 9:45 am while me and 2 buddies were in line at Ben and Jerry's. He's a small guy but real nice. I told him how I enjoyed watching Vince win in Scottsdale and we talked about the 1st round comeback against Blake and how Vince has learned to keep his compsure. He said "this is a big match" and I could tell by the look in his eyes he meant business. He bought 3 Lemon Lime Gatorades and proceeded to a practice court when Spadea was hitting right before the match. He really wanted this thing, as evident by a rigorous run-around on the court just minutes before the big match.

I'm gonna try my best to describe the highlights of this match but there were so many, I'm probably forgetting a lot. 1st set had no breaks of serve. Spadea had his chances late in the set at 15-15. Safin hit two service bombs but Spadea returned both for clean crosscourt winners, one forehand and one backhand. The crowd went ballistic for about a minute. When they finally got quiet, Safin muttered "Real good man" and clapped his racket to Spadea. 5 seconds later he smacked an ace up the tee to another roar. Somebody yelled "Foot fault" at Safin but he responded "Shut up". Haha! Safin held and they went to a 1st set tiebreaker. Safin had a set point but couldn't keep it. Every point in the tiebreaker was high quality, HELL, every point in the match was high quality. These two had great ralleys with powerful ground strokes. Spadea fought off some setpoints to steal the tiebreaker 9-7. More of the same in the 2nd set. Spadea broke Safin only to be broken back in the next game. They went to another tiebreaker with Vince storming out to a 3-0 lead. But Marat had none of it, storming back with winners and dictating play from one corner of the court to the other end of the court. He won the 2nd tiebreaker 7-4.

The 3rd set was tense as both guys fought to hold serve. Safin missed out on some volleys and began cursing at himself out loud in Russian. Spadea faced two break points early in the set but saved them. At 5-4 in the 3rd set, Spadea turned on the gas again and was rocking Marat's serves. At deuce in the game, Vince returned a 135 mph serve but was running wide to get to Safin's reply. He did so and Safin hit an approach to the far end of the court. With all his might, Vince stormed to the ball and knocked a down-the-line backhand. Safin dove to hit the volley but just missed as it connected with the frame. Safin laid on the court for about 10 seconds while Vince was pumping his fist at match point. Safin held his composure and won 3 points in a row to get to game point but Spadea came roaring back like he's done so much lately. He got back another huge Safin serve and on his 2nd match point saw a Safin shot go long. After 2 hours and 40 minutes Vince Spadea won a thriller. The key to the match was Spadea's return of serve. He was keying in on Safin's strength and somehow exploiting it. Vince's game has improved so much. It's a shame this match wasn't on ESPN, though I know the Tennis Channel was broadcasting all the stadium matches live today. It truly was a classic.

okay, after reading this report, i feel kinda bad for ripping into Marat. I didn't see the match and was wrong to assume that he gave another listless performance but it seems he tried and give it his best shot but is just short on cofidence. I think if Marat was confident we wouldn't be hearing all this talk about luck from him.

Yeah maybe we got a bit tough on him as pretty much nobody saw the match ... but then again there are reasons in the past why we jumped to that conclusion.

and I guess a truly winning feeling comes from .. uuuhm winning (really!). a title. he needs a title.

Thanks Kiara for confirming my thoughts on his second serve. People always go on about Marat with the huge serve who could be a major threat at Wimby, but that's not the reality.

oh well, on to the future! I dream of clay action...

Marat is not a little boy anymore so I don't think I'm being too hard on him, even if I haven't seen the matches. Four losses like this is just too much. You would expect him to notice a pattern after two or three tournaments and try to improve.

One thing I'm actually wondering about is whether Marat REALLY thinks it's about luck or is he trying to explain something, but can't because his english might not be good enough for it.

oh he does have a huge serve but just the first serve, thats why he has a problem with the TB's - if on a given day he cant find his first serve he's in trouble...as a huge server he should have an advantage in tiebreaks but he doesnt really because his second serve sucks so bad :(

Pudding would be great for Marat, but I think he'd be better off with a Russian coach...he had a bit of a problem with Mats in that Marat didnt speak Swedish and Mats didnt speak Russian so they communicated in English and I can imagine that caused a few complications and misunderstandings here and there.....

Also when a player continues to mention "luck", well, when it comes to Marat, you have to know their confidence is low. What else can they say?

BTW, Monica Seles used to pepper her statements with "luck" all of the time, especially when she won against Serena or someone top 5.

Hi, I have been lurking a while but finally decided to post. What is it with you guys - how fickle some fans can be. That was a good match - AND it was televised on ESPN. Unfortunatley, their schedule is so screwy, they didn't say. Just by chance, I happened to see the last half of it. Half of the second set and the whole third one. Marat played really well. Every year the players get better. Spadea is playing unreal tennis right now.
I am discouraged too that Marat has not won more after the phenomenal start at the Australian Open, but now the players know he is back and they watched his game and are ready for him. He has phenomenal talent - I think he is still ranked #2 in ATP Champions race - at least right now. And personally, I wish that doubles match between Marat/Mark P is televised. I'd love to see that - 2 power players. Who said that was poo? Hey that was a great match. The winds were bad. Spadea said himself he played on that court a lot and knows how to handle them. He seems like a nice guy. Federer nearly lost his second round match - I saw that too. He made an amazing number of unforced errors. I like Federer's game a lot, but his fans must have been discouraged. Go Marat!!!!

Fickle?? If we were fickle we wouldn't be here, not after last year.

He lost to Vince Spadea - not Federer or Roddick or Agassi - Spadea. Marat should not be losing to idiots who hold the record for most consecutive loses no matter how well Vince is playing at the moment.

Actually I disagree with you Nicki.vey much.

It not true when people talk of Spadea like he's the lowest of the low,and therefore Marat SHOULD have beaten him because he's scum.

Spadea is a very intellegent player, and a dangerous journeyman, he's experienced and he's beaten top players before, he beat Roddick and Blake and won a title less than a month ago, so he's clearly competent, ok he's no Agassi, but according to that report Spadea had too much game for Marat, Marat played as well as he could but Spadea kept the pressure on, knew his weak points and attacked when he had the chance,it would be nice if people commended him for his effort and not called him an idiot because clearly, he isnt.
I didnt expect Marat to cruise through, I expected this to be a tough match and I didnt think even he was going to win it. I DID however expect him to beat Roddick and I think he couldve if he didnt spazz out halfway through.and that was what was dissapointing about that match, the fact that he didnt try, he did yesterday and sadly his opponent was better.

I think because I'm a bit older than some of you guys I don't see his loss yesterday as being too bad, although I was bummed because I thought he'd pull it through. He's going through the "James Blake" syndrome, being in the 30s and seeded low or not seeded at all and due to bad luck of draw pulling the Federers and Roddicks early. Can't he get a good draw???

No I dont think his loss was bad either, it definiely wasnt as dissapointing as his loss to Roddick, its because he had his chances (a 4-0 lead I believe) and he blew them and gave a lame-o excuse about Roddick getting lucky with some volleys, imo there is not much shame in losing to a player who played better than you on a given day no matter how low in the rankings they are IF you did everything you could beat them.

Oh, BTW, I think it was The Tennis Channel and not ESPN who showed the match. Is the Safin/Phillipousis match being shown anywhere? Yes, Spadea is playing REALLY well now. I think he was in the world top 30 last year. Any of you guys play tennis? You wouldn't be so fast to knock Marat's performance. OK, he apparently gave a 'tank sign' the middle of second set. The sportscaster said he was doing this to take pressure off himself; was not really tanking. He wasn't; he tried really hard. He got mad and frustrated. I missed the set where he hit a couple balls out of the court, but I saw him break the racquet. They said that would be $2,000 fine - chump change for him and made a comment like 'where is his psychologist?' I didn't like that either. He tried hard, he played well. He didn't tank, which he has been known to do when discouraged. Spadea played better and handled the wind better. I think the sportscaster said one of the keys to Spadea's success was how well he returned Marat's serve too. That is not easy to return. Ah - here come the flames, help!!!! I lurked a while for a couple weeks. I got a big kick out of Marat's quotes - especially where he said he only signed for beautiful girls. He signed for me twice. How can you not love a guy like that? Even when he loses, his matches are more exciting, by far, than most others. You just never know what he will do.

Yeah, he's 20-5, but look his only title this year is the Mickey Mouse San Jose, and he lost Scottsdale going out to Spadea. Didn't defend Memphis-- Qtrs to Enqvist, IW Qtrs to Henman who went out first round Miami, and he better watch out Bjorkman who beat him in Doha, is up next.

I'm still here TF :)

I didn't know you're the same age as Eggy. I have to tell you that you're not around the same age as Sjengster though ;) He's younger, but his choice of words make him look older ;)

Is Estoril being played after the DC ties? If so, Marat better be playing on clay non stop for the coming two weeks.

Welcome Luna :wavey:
I don't know how much you've been lurking lately, but we've already discussed why we're so hard on Marat at the moment. Check the IW thread ;)

Roddick's year has been ho-hum and I don't see his fans getting on his case for not getting to the finals of AO after losing to a has-been like Marat...

You don't see Roddick fans getting on his case because the guy fights and gives it his all in every match. He beats guys he is supposed to beat and doesn't wank out of early rounds of tournaments. You'll never see Roddick losing 3 first rounds in a row. He doens't pick and choose what tournament he wants to do well in, he plays hard and puts forth the same effort into every match. Unfortunately, we cant say the same about Marat.

Welcome Luna! :wavey: Its nice to have you here but as Kiara said, please get to kow us first before judging us. Most of here are longtime diehard fans who've supported him thru thick and thin. At the moment, Marat is letting his fans down and we're just letting off a little steam. Forgive us for not being more enthusiastic about this slump he's in.

ED kinda sucks I've heard. The only way she can still win is by making an injured Venus run.
