For making the final, Smeets is guaranteed of a career high ranking (around 178) and if he wins the final, should jump to about 176...

Congrats and good luck in the final :yeah:

Bump!

After some more impressive, consistent results, Robert Smeets broke into the top 150 for the first time a couple of weeks ago. He achieved a career high ranking of 149. He is currently ranked 150.

In light of his good form, Smeets has been awarded a wildcard into the main draw of the 2007 Australian Open!! Hopefully he can continue his climb up the rankings with more good results at Melbourne Park

here's the proof!

Smeets receives Australian Open wildcard
Tennis Australia
Thursday December 13, 2007

Queensland left-hander Robert Smeets has been rewarded for the best season of his career with a wildcard to the main draw of Australian Open 2008.

This year Smeets, 22, has lifted his world singles ranking from 391 to a career high 149 (it is currently 150), with a 53-25 win/loss record in the 34 events he has contested.

“Robert has had an outstanding year,” Tournament Director Craig Tiley said. “He has massively improved his ranking, been our best performed under 23 player on the circuit and is close to direct entry into the Australian Open.

“Those achievements, in addition to our youth policy, means that Robert has already earned a wildcard, so it makes sense for him to get it now and begin preparations for the Australian Open.

“We’ve made this decision early because it frees up another position in the 16-man field for the Australian Open play-off and provides opportunity for another young player to get some valuable experience against the country’s best talent,” Tiley said.

A very happy Smeets said he was grateful for the opportunity to try and improve on his second round appearance at the Australian Open main draw this year.

“I got to play against (Czech) Tomas Berdych on Margaret Court Arena in the second round and I am really looking forward to coming back and trying to go further in 2008,” he said.

In 2007 the Queenslander won a Challenger in the United States and Futures tournaments in Great Britain, Spain, Kuwait and Australia (Wollongong). He credits a lot of his improvement to the AIS Pro Tour program, better scheduling and his AIS program coach James Trotman.

“In the past I have gone along and won or lost and not really been able to analyse where I went right or wrong. Working with James has been fantastic and allowed us to really break down all aspects of my game and focus on what needs to be done to get better.”

The final four wildcard places in the men’s draw and seven wildcard places in the women’s draw for the Australian Open play-offs have also been announced today.

Victorian Rameez Junaid, South Australian Colin Ebelthite, New South Welshman Adam Feeney and West Australian Miles Armstrong have secured places in the 16-player men’s event. Replacing Smeets is West Australian Matthew Ebden, aged 20 and ranked 541 in the world.

Junaid won a Futures tournament in Poland earlier this year before finishing runner-up at a Challenger in Burnie last week to move to a career-high ranking of world No.309.

Ebelthite also reached a career-high ranking earlier this month, while Feeney claimed one title and reached another final on the Futures circuit.

In his best season on the senior circuit, 19-year-old Armstrong won his first title in Gloucester in October after reaching the final in Sawtell the week before.

On the women’s side, the following players received wildcards into the Australian Open play-off: Alison Bai (ACT), Marija Mirkovic (VIC), Alenka Hubacek (VIC), Tyra Calderwood (NSW), Isabella Holland (QLD), Sally Peers (VIC) and Olivia Rogowska (VIC).

All the above players added into the women’s draw are teenagers, which is in line with Tennis Australia’s youth policy.

Holland, Peers and Rogowska were members of the Australian Junior Fed Cup team which won the 16/u world championship teams event this year.

One place in both the men’s and the women’s draws has been reserved for the singles winners of the Optus 18s Australian Championships.

With a protected ranking of 119, Mark Philippoussis heads the men’s draw while world No.142 Jarmila Gajdosova leads the women.

The winners of the Australian Open play-offs, which take place at Melbourne Park from December 15 to 21, are awarded main draw wildcards into the Australian Open.

Just because of this result, he should not be given the US Open wildcard.
Smeets has lived off TA hand outs this year, and what has he to show for his efforts? Diddly!
6-1 6-1 7-6 and 6-1 6-0 6-0 he lost his last two main draw matches at Grand Slams, there are other players like Groth and Klein who are younger and better prospects who deserve the wildcard.

Still, congrats on the title :)

au_sports_opinion

When you say 'lived off' do you mean financially, because his ranking has not been affected by the wildcards and he's built that by good form.

I agree the wildcard should go to someone young, imo preferably Brydan.

Let's be realistic for a second here. Smeets is competing consistently at a much higher level than Klein, who hasn't beaten anyone in the top 400 for six months, and has only ever beaten one player in the top 300. Groth is improving, but his results are still not as good as Smeets on the challenger circuit.

There's no point helping guys who aren't within reasonable distance of the top 100 or 150. TA should be helping Smeets get into the top 100, which would leave a free wildcard for someone lower down when he gets there.

Robert really deserves this. He's worked hard and took some unfair stick after the French debacle.

Fish is tough but injury prone...he always seems to struggle the week after he has a good run in a tournie. His body doesn't handle a lot of play very well. He'll be hard to beat though.

I wouldn't say that he has made up for the French Open debacle, there is nothing to make up.

Timbo
08-27-2008, 12:10 PM
A good effort from Smeets. He pushed Fish all the way and it was only a few points here and there that settled it. The most encouraging thing is that there are obvious parts of his game that he can improve. His returns weren't great and he let a few volleys go by that landed in. Importantly, he has a big weapon in that serve...something that the likes of Ebelthite, Feeney and some of the other Aussies in the 2-300s don't seem to have. Don't really think he's a decent choice for the DC tie though...his game is definitley not suited to clay. Look for him to clean up those Aussie challengers that Sirianni won last year though.

Great effort from Robert, too bad he couldn't snatch the first set, because Fish probably would have been battered by that stage

It wouldn't surprise me if he now travelled to Chile with the Davis Cup boys, maybe just as a hitting partner though.

I'd like to see him try and qualify for the Australian Open too, next year, rather than being given another wildcard.

He should definitely get a wildcard for the Brisbane International though.
Anyway, for the rest of the season, let's hope he can build on this form and end the year firmly entrenched in the top 150 :)

I dont know if anyones aware of this but some how Rob has scored a wildcard into the Thailand Open main draw singles this week. Hes drawn Mischa Zverev first round, not the worst first round. I hope he can get a couple of wins here and increase his chances of going towards the top 100. I think hes good enough to be in the top 100.

jmf07
09-22-2008, 05:59 AM
Yeah I am not sure how he got the wildcard. I know that he was behind Istomin and Stadler in the alternates list and they had to play qualies so maybe the organisers gave it to Smeets as he would not have been able to participate in the qualies due to his davis cup commitments unlike Stadler and Istomin who had no davis cup commitments. Other than that though I cannot see why he would get a wildcard.

The Zverev match will be a winnable match for Smeets although he will be the underdog.

He still plays at a top 200 standard but just not on clay. I personally think that he and Gooch should play at the same tournaments and work on their doubles. They seem to play well together, they both hate clay so scheduling tournaments shouldn't be that hard, both have good serves and compliment each other well and Smeets could draw the best out of Gooch. If it doesn't work out well then they can separate but if it does then they might just find themselves as a good doubles pairing. They don't have that much to lose.

Has anyone heard where he will start the year on the pro tour. He has played one lower tour tournament, also will play another in about a weeks time, also i take back what i said about him not getting a wildcard over Kelly, Sirianni and Berman. They have all played pretty well this year espically Sirianni he did well making the final round of qualies at Australian Open, also a Semi Final at Burnie and a second round in Japanese challenger, he also has gained around 80 spots in the rankings this year well done.

I have just looked at Dayne Kelly's profile and he is 19, shocked i thought he was about 22 or 23. So thats good then. Kelly has made a Quarter Fianl in Burnie also in two US Futures, so not that bad.

Berman did great in the junior Australian Open making the final.

So now back to Smeets, hopefully he can play 1 or two grand slam qualies this year and get a ranking of 300 or lower at any stage of the year. I would be very surprised if he was to ever make the top 200 again. What do people think. Also everyone go to ATP World Tour website and sign up for the Draw Challenge, and join the Aussie group, good luck to Smeets this year.

Smeets' career is pretty much over. His ranking is not going to get him anywhere fast and he hasn't even been playing. Robert is playing a small tournament in Griffith, he is through to the fourth round. He won his first match with a bye, then won two fairly easy straight sets matches. He is the top seed, pretty much there is only one player that has a chance in beating him that player is Matheson Klein. Hopefully Smeets can win that then play some futures and win them, good luck to him. Also everyone has given up on him everyone who reads this write something please.

Do you have any other news?
Any chance of playing any events in the future?

Robert Smeets is currently doing some coaching in Brisbane. (He actually coaches a friend of mine).
