Shaughnessy advances to quarterfinals; Blake loses
By PHIL BROWN, Associated Press Writer
January 19, 2003

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Meghann Shaughnessy saved five break points in the final game and advanced to the Australian Open quarterfinals with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Elena Bovina on Monday.

Meanwhile, Rainer Schuettler made the most of 2002 runner-up Marat Safin's withdrawal by reaching the final eight with a 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory over James Blake.

Schuettler gained a free pass into the fourth round when Safin withdrew with a wrist injury after falling in an earlier match.

Schuettler, a 26-year-old German who had never reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal before, rebounded from early service breaks by Blake in the first two sets.

In the final set, the two traded service breaks in the fourth and fifth games, and Schuettler gained the key break in the sixth when Blake double-faulted. Schuettler finished with a forehand down the line that Blake couldn't handle at the net.

The 23-year-old Blake, playing in a Grand Slam event's fourth round for the first time, had 35 errors, compared with 19 by Schuettler.

"When you're playing for something that's really important, the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam, it hurts,'' Blake said. "I learned something. You can't play the same tennis in the second week as you can in the first.''

==============================================

Chin up, James! :) You'll do it eventually. I'm glad you could find something positive out of this match :o

Serena dog won... :p oh well it was good experience for the young Greek! She did OK! [too many UEs but she has lots of time to improve -- and I was hoping for a big fat upset!]

James looked so dejected! :( I still want to know what happened to him... so many UEs also. Did he have a letdown??

Dani's doubles are coming up next on MCA :) To be followed by James's. Hopefully he has recovered.

RF, I have no idea beyond the article that I posted what happened. I think he said it best -- "You can't play the same tennis in the second week as you can in the first." In his interview after his third round match, he said a lot of people were going to expect him to win over Schuettler, but he didn't expect to cause he knows Schuettler has been playing well so far this year.

Bye lokon. Based on what you said, I guess I shouldn't be watching my coverage then since it's a delay of what ESPN's showing now. It won't come til midnite anyway.

C'mon Misha. Pls, remember Davis Cup! You have it in you to win this one.

And good news to TH here that they will play Kimmy's match tomorrow morning/afternoon.

Vera
01-20-2003, 05:29 AM
Hi Lee.:wavey:

Do you mind to give me a run down of what ESPN has today. I'm not going to tape that Roddick part, cos I know whoever commenting is gonna drive me crazy. I'll just set the time for the rest. Are you on now on Lleytons?

Vera
01-20-2003, 05:29 AM
oooops, you already said they are on Lleyton's, sorry!

Lee
01-20-2003, 05:41 AM
I only watch part of the broadcast and I don't really note the time so give me a little bit of time to figure this out.

Vera
01-20-2003, 05:46 AM
Well, I guess it doesn't matter. The only match I care to watch is Lleyton's anyway. So I'll just start my tape at around the time Pandy's match done. It's a shame that Misha didn't take that match, it would have been fun to watch. Now, we'll have to hear about it until Pandy got knock off this tournament, hopefully, that's 2 days later.

2 things I really really really care in this tournament...Juanqui wins it and Pandy lost in the next round. So besides the fact that I like Lleyton, he simply must win to make sure that Pandy's ass get kick next round.

So c'mon Lleyton, just finish off Mr. El Ay already. (Gosh, looks like another TB is coming)

Lee
01-20-2003, 05:47 AM
My broadcast here start at 8pm it Serena's match. Andy's match was on after Serena (she finished at about 9pm) and finished at about 10:45pm and they go on to Hewitt's game which is still on and it's 11:45pm here.

Vera
01-20-2003, 05:47 AM
Oh, I was typing when you post. So if you do figure out, then I really appreciate that, but if that's too much trouble, then don't worry about that. Thanks a lot though.

Vera
01-20-2003, 05:49 AM
lol, we post the same time. Okay, thanks a lot. I guess TSN will be showing the prolong coverage also, I hope, since it's middle of the nite and no one care what they show anyway. I guess the only good about getting a delay coverage is that at least I know what to tape and what not. If I watch this one live, I would have to break the tv.

Lee
01-20-2003, 05:53 AM
The amazing thing about Hewitt's game is in the first 2 set. He won all the points when his 1st is in. So even his 1st percentage is below 50%, he is dangerous.

Vera
01-20-2003, 05:55 AM
His first serve % is always not very high. In fact, I think his average is usually around 50%.

Lee
01-20-2003, 05:56 AM
IMO, if Jimmy is bad, Washington is worse. Basically, Jimmy lost his cool when Roddick is involved but other time he's OK!

Vera
01-20-2003, 05:57 AM
I can only imagine how bad that is. And God helps us if Pandy even win anything big.

Hewitt is not famous for his serve. He sort of compensate it with very high risk (to him) first serve.

I'm impressed that VM hasn't give any inch. If it's not bcos of Pandy, I really don't mind if VM win this one.

Lee
01-20-2003, 06:04 AM
If Hewitt win, (he better cos he is on my team :D :D) it will be a very interesting match.

Andy is very confident after his first come back from 2 sets down win. I think it's his first win against Misha too. He definitely played much better than Misha in the last set. He served very good in the last 2 sets and this sort of make Misha lost his confident. Misha just lost it in the final set.

I can predict there will be lots of sparks between these two 20 years old guys in the near future.

Vera
01-20-2003, 06:09 AM
Ohwell, dunno what happen to Misha and will never know. There's a lot of 20 years old guys that are very impressive these days. I hope they all come into the scene sooner to take some spotlights :).

Lleyton lost the 3rd set :(. You think VM can beat Pandy? They never met.

Lee
01-20-2003, 06:17 AM
I have to run upstair to change the tape (running out of tape  ).

Whether Aynaoui can beat Andy? If he is able to beat Hewitt and keep up to his performance in this match, he has his chance. He also has a big serve and big forehand. Not much different from Andy. He is more consistent since he can keep his winner/ue difference in +ve number especially playing against Hewitt.

He is a Moroccan and this is North America. It's a miracle we have a chance to see him before. The only other Moroccan I saw is Hirazi and it's because he was in the final in TMS Monte-Carlo.

This is the first time I see Aynaoui played too. But for someone with 6'4", his move is pretty good.

You're right. I don't know why I never saw him, he beat Juanqui 6 times . But then, they never really show much of Juanqui anyway, so that explains why.

I like to watch Arazi, I remembered that MC match against Guga. I like all those shotmakers floater kind of guys like Arazi, Santoro. I even like Rios :o, he's a great tennis player when he's actually playing. But most of the time, he spent his time on court daydreaming.

Pah... I can't believe it.... I don't think I've ever been this damn devastated about a tennis match before. This is just incredible.... out in the fourth round to El Aynaoui, and between EA and Roddick, one of them is going to make it to the semis. :fiery: What's worse is that a few crucial points here and there in the tiebreaks, and Lleyton could have won in straights. Disappointed is an effing bloody understatement.

I'm going to go read a book or fifty. See you all next month.

Yes, he is through in doubles and are in quarters now but his next opponents are Tommy R and Portas. It may not be easy to defend the title this year cause there are lots of pair with very good single players. That's why many seeded pairs are ousted.

The thought of an Andy semi is excruciating . . . actually, now that Hewitt is out, I don't even mind Andy that much! Very mixed feelings about last night.

On the one hand, Rainer won and I'm so proud of him! http://www.smilies.org/basesmilies/blob_red.gif http://www.smilies.org/basesmilies/blob_red.gif http://www.smilies.org/basesmilies/blob_red.gif Thanks for the pic TH! ;)

As for the rest, things couldn't be worse. Lleyton lost to Juanqui's arch-enemy  and Andy won.:eek::eek: This really is the worst case scenario, now Andy will probably roll into the semis. *nautious* The fact that either Roddick or El Aynaoui will be in the semis is a catastrophe.

THERE WILL BE NO CHEERING FOR THE VOWEL MAN IN HERE! :fiery:

Just kidding. ;) In fact, I'll cheer for him myself! *never in a million years did I think I would say that*

The top half of the draw is disastrous as far as I'm concerned. All of my faves were grouped together in the middle and cancelled each other out.

And now Nalbandian won the first set and if he wins, I'll just crawl under a rock and stay there, much like Allan.

:wavey: thread! :)

Well, I've had a nap and calmed down a bit... I'm sorry for my outburst earlier, I'm a bit surprised at how I reacted.... almost to the very end I was calm because I thought he could still get out of trouble, but when he finally lost, I blew it. I was in tears :o ... I threw things :o ... and ... :o I deleted all my tennis bookmarks. :o :o :o

I'm not sure why I'm so gutted at this loss... I certainly wasn't expecting him to just walk up and take the title, there are too many quality players around to be sure of anything like that...but I was really hoping he would have made a good run, like to the semis at least. It seems like this hurts a lot more for me than last year's USO semi, or the drubbing in the Paris final, because I just can't imagine that El Aynaoui is a player he should be losing to at all. (Err... sorry to any VM fans in here, just IMO :o )

Thanks to Lee, Vera and Layla for your hugs *hug*, and Becca, I really appreciate what you posted in the camel thread. It was extremely classy, especially since it's quite clear you're definitely not a fan of his. :)

I think I'll take a few days off from the boards... I don't want to risk blowing my top if I run across any peeler-cheering...but I'll be back... I like you all too much (yes, even those of you who WILL be cheering this result :p ). If there is any AO left when I am back, I'll be rooting for either Juanqui or Rogi to get the title. :)

Tough test for Hantuchova
Monday, 20 January, 2003
by Ashley Browne

Daniela Hantuchova will try to snap a three-match winless record against Australian Open No.2 seed Venus Williams in the first of the women's quarter-finals on Centre Court at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday.

Two of the Open's No.7 seed's defeats to Williams have come at Grand Slams - Wimbledon 2001 and at Melbourne Park last year - with the other last year at New Haven.

Then comes French No.12 men's seed Sebastien Grosjean against Andre Agassi, who following Lleyton Hewitt's defeat on Monday is now the overwhelming tournament favourite, and is bidding for a unique place in the annals of tennis.

Should the No.2 seed win this title he will become the first man in Open history (and only the fourth man in tennis history) to win four Australian Opens (the other three men being Ken Rosewall, Roy Emerson and Jack Crawford).

The pair have met four times with Agassi the victor last time around 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the semi-finals of the Masters Series event in Madrid last year. The big question facing Grosjean here will be how much petrol he has left in the tank after his marathon five-set defeat of Felix Mantilla on Sunday evening, especially against Agassi, who was only on the court for 48 minutes earlier that day before Guillermo Coria defaulted because of foot blisters.

The evening session on Rod Laver Arena will start with No.5 seed Justine Henin-Hardenne against unseeded Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual - playing just her second Grand Slam quarter-final. A win to Henin-Hardenne at last year's Italian Open marked their only match to date.

Then comes the commentator's nightmare, unseeded Wayne Ferreira versus No.4 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, in which the Spaniard (Ferrero) leads the series 2-0. :D:D:D:D

With Vodafone Arena now closed for the rest of the championship, the Margaret Court Arena becomes the main outside show court and will feature a host of big names in the doubles.

Among those in action will be Lindsay Davenport, Mary Pierce, the Williams sisters and Kim Clijsters. And in two outstanding legends clashes, John McEnroe pairs with John Lloyd against Aussies Peter Doohan and Kim Warwick, and John Fitzgerald and Brad Drewett face down Wally Masur and Ilie Nastase in only the Romanian's second showing at the Australian Open.

Yeah, so I noticed DP. We just have to weather the storm, though. They'll all be eating this crow when Roddick goes fucking DOWN :D As I believe Rebecca put it in the "Could Roddick be any luckier" thread, he seems to expend so much energy being happy after a big win like this that he can't bring anything back to the next match.

And by the way, no, he couldn't be any luckier with the 12 withdrawals, 8 retirements (including, lest we forget, Safin), and shocking early round losses of top seeds. But there are 3 top seeds looming on the other side of the draw, all three of whom I'm sure would be more than happy to deny Roddick his first Slam win.

How long? How long . . .
'Cause tonight
We can be as one tonight

Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me, who has won?
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

How long?
How long must we sing this song?
How long? How long...
'Cause tonight
We can be as one tonight
Tonight...

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Oh, wipe your blood shot eyes
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die

(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won
On...

Sunday Bloody Sunday
Sunday Bloody Sunday

James's interview:

Q. How distressing?
JAMES BLAKE: This one hurt quite a bit, but when I talked to my coach, and we've talked about it quite a few times, the more it hurts I guess that means the better I'm doing. Doesn't hurt as bad to lose in the first round of a challenger when not too many people really care. When you're playing for something that's really important, spot in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, hurts quite a bit. Hopefully I'll have some more that hurt even more later, losing in the finals, getting there, feeling that struggle, like it's important.
That's what I've been putting all the hard work in for, is to enjoy the times when I do come through and then to feel this pain when I lose.
It's getting better. I played -- I did my best today so I have nothing to be ashamed of. I learned something. I mean, I definitely don't think you can play the same tennis in the first week as you can in the second week. You got to step up a little bit. I never did. I never quite found my rhythm, going for a little too much or being a little too tentative I felt like. That's something that guys capitalize on.
Rainer did a good job of capitalizing when I was a little too tentative, taking it to me, just letting me miss when I was going for too much.

Q. He didn't have a previous round because of the injury to Safin. What effect might it have had on your comparative levels?
JAMES BLAKE: Not too much I don't think. We're all professionals out here. We know how to deal with that. I'm sure he got a great day of practice in that day and then yesterday still probably just didn't do a whole lot, just getting ready for today. I don't think it made a huge difference.

Q. Was there any effect from the smoke? It was pretty bad coming in today?
JAMES BLAKE: I didn't notice it. Maybe he was a little more used to it maybe from Germany. When I was over there, I noticed a few too many people smoking everywhere I went.
But I don't think it made a big difference. I really didn't feel the effects. When I first went out and stepped on the court, I could sense it, felt it when I was breathing. But, you know, as you get into the match, I didn't notice it at all.

Q. Is there some consolation getting to the fourth round?
JAMES BLAKE: Yeah. Like I said, that means it's starting to get important. I felt like I played well to get through those first three rounds, pretty solid players that I beat. It's just another stepping stone. I learned from three wins. I'm going to learn from a loss now.
I feel, you know, pretty disappointed right now, but I also feel good about coming down here and getting something positive out of this whole last three and a half weeks or so, Hopman Cup, Sydney and here.
I definitely have no reason to hang my head when I leave, get on that flight back to America.

Q. If you were approached by someone in the United States and said, "Who the hell is Rainer Schuettler," how would you describe him?
JAMES BLAKE: The guy that just beat up on me. You know, he's a great player. He's been around for a while. I had never played him before this. I had seen him play a little bit and had a lot of respect for his game. He fights hard. And it's definitely tough to play someone, three-out-of-five-set match that's just going to get run down every ball, it's very frustrating.
You have to come in with the right mental attitude, perspective, the fact that you're going to be out there a long time and ready to win. I guess I just wasn't able to do that today. He's got just a really solid game, one of the -- a very good professional, does everything the right way.
I hope more fans in the United States will know players like Rainer Schuettler and all kinds of players. It seems like the Australian fans, they know just about every player out here. I think that's great. I hope the American fans really get into tennis as much as the rest of the world. -- ARE YOU LISTENING, ESPN?!??!?!?!?!?!

Q. What's next?
JAMES BLAKE: Next I got doubles later today. But once I'm done here in Australia, I'm gonna go home, rest up a little bit for about a week then get ready to go to Croatia for Davis Cup. I've got one event in Austin, the Grand Slam Jam with Andy Roddick and Jim Courier, it's indoors in Austin. I think Jim really helps in running it. It's a charity event. I'll do that with Andy, play a practice match. Then probably go straight from there, get on a flight to go straight to Croatia and get ready to battle them on some fast indoor courts. That should be fun. It will be a whole different situation.

Q. Did you feel at any point in the match that you were really into it, that you could turn things around?
JAMES BLAKE: Yeah. I mean, I obviously, you know, I'm a competitor. I always felt like I could win the match. I definitely didn't feel like I got my rhythm for an extended period of time. It would be a few points here and there and then somehow I'd get out of it again. I'd start being a little more tentative or going for too much. I realized that was going on. Unfortunately some of those days you just can't do a whole lot about it.
You know, that third set, he might have let up a little bit. I definitely felt good for a little while, you know, going through there. Then just couldn't quite keep it going.
He didn't have a letdown in the fourth. I couldn't -- like I said, I just couldn't put the rhythm together.

Q. Both you and Andy have carried that tag of the "generation next" in terms of American tennis. Do you still feel good about it? Is it becoming a bit of a weight as the tournaments go on and you don't have a breakthrough?
JAMES BLAKE: No, I'm not worried about the weight of that. Andy's done a great job of handling it, especially for someone so young and breaking through as quickly as he did.
I just look at that kind of pressure as an opportunity to do something that's important in tennis. And I think it's great that, you know, the media can make that a big deal and make it that we're following Sampras and Agassi. Unfortunately, I really think those are enormous shoes to fill.
But, you know, I think they did a great job in helping us to get to where we are. You know, I really look forward to the times I have ahead of me where I can hopefully have a big impact on the sport and then help out the younger guys as well. Pete, Andre, Courier, Todd Martin have done extraordinary things in the game and have been very gracious in helping the younger guys. That's hopefully something I have to look forward to.

Q. When you talk about guys like Pete and Andre, is it even reasonable to set that as a goal to try to fill their shoes?
JAMES BLAKE: No, I think it's ridiculous. I think that generation of players is, if not the best, one of the best generations ever. I think last time I made that statement, ^ Benny Simms corrected me and said that it could have been possibly there's an Australian generation with Roy Emersons and Rod Lavers that might have been better. But that's up for debate.
I think it's kind of crazy to say that there will ever be another generation like that. Andy and I are going to do our best with the help of Robby Ginepri, Mardy Fish, Taylor Dent, all guys doing well. With the depth of men's tennis, it's going to be so tough to get what do they have 21 between Pete and Andre, throw in Courier's four, Chang's one, that's, what, 26 Grand Slams. That's not going to be easy to live up to with one generation of players.
You just see the difference, I mean, in men's tennis now. There aren't too many players winning two and three Grand Slams a year. It's very difficult with how good the men's game is and, you know, with the technology of the racquets, guys can hit the balls so big that one person has a great serving day and the best player in the world is off the court and lost in straight sets. Things can happen.
So it's pretty tough to set that as a goal. We're just going to try to do our best and maybe win a few Davis Cups.

Q. Have you had a random blood test? Do you know any players who have had this random blood test?
JAMES BLAKE: No. Obviously, you get those after you lose. So I think a lot of guys aren't always the friendliest people in the world right after they lose. I probably am not. I haven't talked to any guys that have. I'm still not out of the tournament so I don't know if I'll get tested. But, you know, that's part of the game. I won't mind if I do.

Q. You had some pretty good luck with serve and volley. Did you use it enough?
JAMES BLAKE: I think that's something I throw in . I'm not a Tim Henman, a Pat Rafter, I'm not going to use it all the time. Threw it in to change it up, which I think is why it's more effective. I think I probably only served around 50, 55 percent today. I don't think I had the opportunity as much. If I had served a little higher percentage I probably would have used it a little more.
But his returns were also one of his best characteristics. I think that's probably why he beat Richard Krajicek the way he did. I think I used it enough. I just maybe could have made a few more first serves.

Websites are a lot of work, but very rewarding in the end :) And, LOL, I have no aspirations about my own, I just try to make it as user friendly as possible -- that's what its there for, after all :)

:o I guess "tag along" means something different in the UK, cause here it means that you got to go along! :o LOL, I'm sure it was fine. It was always a big thing in my high school, if large groups of people were going to be off for some reason -- the rest of us felt like we got run of the place :D

LOL, Hackie! :D

For me, this is the best AO to date because Juanqui's still in and has a huge shot here. I'd rather he play Seb than Agassi in the semis but I have a feeling Agassi will take Seb out in four sets (of course I just said that out loud because I'm hoping for reverse psychology and that the opposite will happen!:bounce: ). But I'm not too happy about the Kooyong result.

I guess the upside of the prospective AA-JCF semi is that jingoistic ESPN will for sure show it. And if Juanqui beats AA, it'll shut up all those haters and doubters out there. :)

I doubt. Even Juanqui beats AA many times, those haters and doubters will never shut up. They can still find all kinds of fault with him. Pete (I know, I know, ppl here don't like him but so far he's the best AA blaster) beats AA so many times, win more GS than AA, have more year end #1 than AA and there are lots of ppl believe AA is a greater player than he does.

Well, Kooyong is an exhibition and exhibitons are frequently predetermined. So hopefully Sebby will drub Agassihole like we all know he can do :D

And ESPN will show the Agassihole semi, and PMac will defend his favorite Bald One until the death, just like he did at Indian Wells when Michel stomped his ass :D (well, held on and won it in two tiebreaks, but nevertheless--straight sets :D)

James can try to get the words out but I doubt it with ESPN. I am still looking for the after match interview he had with the host (ESPN has a guy, don't know his name, know very little about tennis, he's an ESPN commentator for football I guess) and in Gotennis board, someone accused that guy being racist and asked him very embarassing questions. I don't have any transcript or watched the interview, so I reserve judgement on this but the fact that ESPN put someone there to host the show, I have no idea why. There are Mary Joe, Pam, Maria, PMac, Jimmy, Chris and Washington there already, why they still need and outsider hosting a tennis game.

Unfortunately, you are totally correct. No matter what Juanqui does, especially if he drubs Agassihole like he did at RG last year :D, there will be an excuse found as to why -- "Oh, the Spaniards like the heat" or "oh the court is playing slow" or something equally asinine

I don't like Pete at all, but he is hands down a better player than Agassihole, and Ahole knows it -- why do you think he's still playing at the top of his game and trying to rake in the titles? Because he knows he will never win 14 Grand Slams and is trying to compensate for it. Pete has a 20-14 advantage over Ahole, and no matter what else Ahole does, he can never erase that.

He's very much like PMac :D
