Lee
01-18-2003, 04:48 AM
Why can't they play the TB on ESPN instead of James trying to make in 4-0 in 4th set?

Vera

James' on TV :D

C'mon Feli, take the 4th.

I'm looking forward to David-Federer.

It's worth noting that the head to head is 2-0 : in Davids favour

Not that it matters now - neither was in a slam.

Is it just me, or if you guys were Xavier, would you not cry in fead next time David was in your draw? ;)

First match, Wimbledon, Malisse comes down with the heart problem, or panic attack (TH - Panic attacks indeed are often characterized by heart palpitations, along with other lovely effects. In which case i would think that it is still possible that is what he had).

Second match - Malisse has a problem with his arm.

Third match - third times a charm, or run far far away?

Hewitt's easy progress
Saturday, 18 January, 2003
by Scott Spits

(last updated 10pm AEST)

Such was the ease of Lleyton Hewitt's third-round defeat of little-known Czech Radek Stepanek at Rod Laver Arena before a capacity crowd on Saturday night, much of the interest was in his post-match interview with tennis legend John McEnroe.

Hewitt, world No.1 and the great Australian hope to finally produce another men's singles winner here at Melbourne Park, took exactly 90 minutes to wear-down Stepanek 6-3, 6-2, 6-0.

In an entertaining chat with McEnroe that enchanted the crowd, Hewitt exchanged banter with one of the greatest personalities in tennis and was clearly rapt to be in such impressive form in Melbourne after being knocked-out at last year's Open in the first-round when he was hampered by Chickenpox.

"I thought it would be a little bit tougher than it turned out," Hewitt said. "It's a big relief. Nothing went right last year...You don't have to play your best tennis just yet. You've just got to find a way to win in the early rounds."

And the news got even better for Hewitt on Day Six at Australian Open 2003 when Russian No.3 seed and tournament dangerman Marat Safin was forced to withdraw on the eve of his third-round match due to a wrist injury. Subsequently, the top half of the men's draw has really opened up.

the shirt gave me the inspiration and here is my poem.;)

There once was a thing
We called it a shirt
To tell you the truth
To look at it hurt

Tell me how Nike
Make people wear
This awful design
That gives fans a scare

To see it onRogi
Was such a suprise
And damaging to
Our delicate eyes.

When pulled out of his bag
A look of disgrace
Was given by the crowd
It was so in your face

In the form of a shirt
It clung to his back
The swirling design
Of white,blue and black

Hello thread :wavey: hi Hackie :wavey:
Thanks for that pic of Rogi and Andrea, that's so cool.

Wonderful poem Emma!

I didn't get last nite Lleyton's coverage, but looks like I didn't miss much. And tonite, of course, we got Ahole again. I don't think Coria will give him much trouble (though i don't mind if he does :D). If it's a lopsided match again, at least I can hope they will show other's match.

Last nite, did you guys hear what PMac said, quoted "People always say, so that guy is spanish, he must be a dirkballer, and I got really tick off"...What a hypocrite, big fat liar. He's the one who keep referring those spaniards as dirkballer and no more. PMac's a genuine asshole. And he treated us like idiots, he thought all the ppl watching tennis on TV didn't know a thing .

Anyway, good luck to Juanqui tonite. I hope he's not feeling any pain at his groin anymore. I'll be here cheering. Hopefully, it's an easier nite for us :D.

Vamos Juanqui Vamos.

THanks for the pic of Andreas and Fed (I'm fond of Andreas - despite that loss he had a very good tournament, for somebody who has been playing challengers).

Dr Peedy - Yes, if Hewitt and Roddick meet, I will root for Roddick. My reasoning, is that I like seeing people who haven't done sstuff before, well - do stuff :p And if it wasn't for the damn media, I wouldn't have much of a problem with Roddick anyhow.

Seeing Hewitt win another slam atm, would be boring for me. So I root against him every single match :p

Dont' worry - I'm rooting against Andre too ;)

The prospect of a Hewitt-Andre final is so "blah" to me, I'm not even sure that i would watch.

During last night match, Cliffy said that right now, Juanqui and Moya are the 2 players that can take down Hewitt. Also, PMac said the best match so far was Guga vs Hirazi.

I have to admit that the commentators know a good match worth watching from a bad one. It's the stupid producers in ESPN that determine which matches to broadcast.

Also, my son's comment give me some thinking of why they only show US players. Early this morning, I was watching the tape of Hewitt vs Stepanek, Vince ask who are they and I told him Hewitt is an Australian and Stepanek a Cze. His next question was 'Where are American players?'. He has been told for many years he is a Canadian but after less than 100 days of school here (they are counting cos his is a new school and they have big celebration for the 100th day of school) and he already consider himself a very patriot and proud American. I hope down the road the school will teach them there are many great countries other than America. I am not against American but I don't want him know only US of A.

Men's single:

Daniel Nestor
Kimmy
James
Navratilova (tired of GS Williams sisters doubles)
Dani
Rogi

Lee - I'm sure that you will do a fine job teaching your son to have an open mind (and of course, one can be a patriot and be opened minded at the same time) :)

I think you are right about Malisse... I was just disagreeing with something that TH had said about panic attacks (perhaps I misundertood?), and pointing out that if he had rapid heart rate, then it was possible.

But given the surgeries and what not, it's clearly something else.

:wavey: Hi, all! :) I'm here and ready to cheer tonight :bounce::bounce::bounce:

A preview (very redundant, but exiciting nonetheless):

Top seeds on show on Day Seven
Saturday, 18 January, 2003
by Murray Brust

Two fourth-round women's singles matches will attract plenty of interest for different reasons on Day Seven of Australian Open 2003.

In-form local hope Nicole Pratt faces No.2 seed Venus Williams in the first match on Rod Laver Arena facing the prospect of improving on her best ever Grand Slam result, after reaching the third-round at Melbourne Park in 1999 and again last year.

The following match will see No.5 seed Justine Henin-Hardenne facing No.9 Lindsay Davenport in a rematch of a gripping semi-final battle last year at the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich, which saw an injured Davenport triumph in two tie-break sets.

The 2000 Australian Open champion leads their head-to-head record 5-0, although four of those matches have been very tight, including their first encounter at the 1999 French Open, which went to three sets.

Coincidentally, the last time Daniela Hantuchova met Patty Schnyder was also in Zurich last October, when Schnyder won in three sets - two of them in tie-breaks - to take a 3-2 lead in their career head-to-head.

No.7 seed Hantuchova and No.12 Schnyder open proceedings on Vodafone Arena, while the fourth women's round-of-16 match will feature unseeded pair Denisa Chladkova, of the Czech Republic, and Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual, second up on Margaret Court Arena.

On the men's side, Spanish No.4 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero faces unseeded Croatian Mario Ancic in the second match on Vodafone Arena.

The third match on Rod Laver Arena will feature No.2 seed Andre Agassi up against unseeded Argentine Guillermo Coria, followed by No.12 seed Sebastien Grosjean taking on Felix Mantilla.

On Margaret Court Arena, Wayne Ferreira will play Sargis Sargsian, who has beaten the South African veteran in both of their previous encounters.

LOL, at least, besides Juanqui, we also have Andre in common then! :p

Your post got me thinking about the circumstances in which I would root/cheer for Roddick, but gee, even in the hypothetical situation where he plays Agassi... I'd have trouble making that step... I'd prolly just stay off the net if (heaven forbid!!!) we end up with a Roddick/Agassi final.

I still have trouble using the term 'root' myself... I am familiar with it, because we get a good deal of North American exchange students at my uni, but in Australia, 'rooting' means quite a different thing! :o

Vera
01-19-2003, 12:00 AM
Hi Allan :wavey:

So what does "root" means in Australian? You should teach us some Aussie slangs.

I'm rooting for Lleyton as long as he's not facing Juanqui. If it's a Lleyton and Rogi SF, then I don't know. I like Rogi more but I think Lleyton is likely to take out Ahole more than Rogi. If Juanqui doesn't win the whole thing, I just don't want any American to win it, or we will never hear the end of it from PMac (he say: what did I tell ya!). Yuck. But the idea of rooting against Rogi is quite strange, I must say.

Anyway,

Vamos Juanqui. Allez Seb.

Just reading a few interviews in preperation for cheering, and Marat is really funny! I wish the videos were longer, cause I'd love to see exactly how he handled a few of these questions:

Q. What about Yevgeny? What is on his mind?
MARAT SAFIN: Ask Yevgeny what is on his mind. Why should I know?

Q. Because he's Russian.
MARAT SAFIN: Yeah, but I don't really -- his life, ask him. Because me, I don't know what he wants to do, what he has on his mind. I think even himself, he doesn't know what he wants. So you want me to tell you? I really don't know, really.

Q. What do you think of the Masters in Shanghai last November? There will be another ATP event in Beijing in September. Do you plan to play that?
MARAT SAFIN: We're in 16 of January, man. 16 of January, I don't know if I will be alive tomorrow. Don't ask me what's going to be in September.
I really liked Shanghai, really nice place. I was really impressed. I never been in China before. Really it was a great organization. The people, they really work hard to do that tournament.
Let's see. If they have the same organization in Beijing, for sure it's really going to be nice tournaments and you have great players. It's the first time I hear there's a tournament there, so I will have it on my mind.

Interesting point about discovery health channel. That cable channel was used to be ESPN Classic in my area. I panic when I think ESPN Classic is gone but fortunately, I have the digital channels which they dump ESPN Classic into.

It's not, that's the whole point. :( Well, the semi-finals and final are shown on the Slovene national tv, but only if they don't clash with anything. Of course it usually rains in Wimbledon which means the Slovene tv invariably runs out of coverage time. Fortunately the Croatian tv has a channel 3 which is more or less devoted to sports.

Eurosport doesn't cover Wimby ? It's the most prestigious tennis tournament so they say. So who's covering that?

It's not, that's the whole point. :( Well, the semi-finals and final are shown on the Slovene national tv, but only if they don't clash with anything. Of course it usually rains in Wimbledon which means the Slovene tv invariably runs out of coverage time. Fortunately the Croatian tv has a channel 3 which is more or less devoted to sports.

Okay, that answer my question.

This is exactly why Eurosport does not have any rights to broadcast Wimbly. Too expensive (probably). Other channels do, like BBC., But Wimbly is the slam that I have no coverage at all

Nope, he's he young, fat one with glasses. Mandy was all, heehee, call me sometime, Jack!

I was like, oooh, cheating on Roddick, eh, but then realized it was probably before she met Andy.

I'm not sure what the deal is, but I think it's because BBC covers it in Great Britain and there must be some sort of clash of interest. Because Eurosport has a fantastic, all-day coverage of all other slams.

Layla I dont think Eurosport has the rights to show Wimbly not because of a clash of interest. It is also because it is a the biggest tournament in England and a GS,everyone with a TV can watch it and not just people with sky, cable etc.

Dani and Patty are hitting the ball very high!

Cheating on Roddick with Jack Osborne, now there's a concept! Could she have a worse taste in men? :o

Kelly's alright, but she really isn't a good singer.

Dani's match night not go the distance, but it's going to be long. Half an hour has passed, and they're only at 4-3 in the second

And I agree, Kelly Osbourne isn't anything special. She's more "real" than Britney or "Xtina" or the like, but she doesn't exactly wow me.

But then again, few female singers do. Norah Jones

No, no you weren't DP. I'm sorry they couldn't accept the Russians were just better than them. I watched it myself and they were better. But then I have problems with the subjective scoring system thats involved in figure skating, so to me it's not even a sport anymore.
