I knew you guys would be very tense, and I wasn't in the mood to be spastic, and being around tense people like me would have elevated that

I followed it on MSN with somebody, and he kept flipping out about the match points, and I was like "dude relax", because I was trying hard to "behave"

IMO this match was an enormous mental hurdle for him.

:) What was I saying about the Spaniards? Read this:

Spaniards moulded on clay
Friday, 17 January, 2003
by Barry Levinson

With three men finishing in the top 10 last year for the first time in the history of the ATP rankings, it is fair to say that tennis in Spain is booming.

When Albert Costa defeated countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final of last year's French Open, it marked the fourth time in the last 10 years that a Spaniard had claimed the title at Roland Garros.

But for a country that currently has no less than 13 men ranked in the top 100, the Spaniards - partly due to their success in Paris - are commonly thought of as masters of clay only.

And there's a good reason for this. Despite their current status as a force in men's tennis, it has been a long time since a Spanish male has won any Grand Slam title, other than the French Open.

World No.5 Carlos Moya has come the closest, when he lost to Pete Sampras in the final of the 1997 Australian Open, but it has been 28 years since a Spaniard won any of the three other Grand Slams.

Manuel Orantes defeated Jimmy Connors in the final of the 1975 US Open, while the last Spaniard to win Wimbledon was Manuel Santana in 1966. No Spaniard has ever won the Australian Open.

Already, this year's number No.5 seed at the Australian Open, Moya, was bundled out in the second-round and on Friday he was joined by Costa, the No.8 seed, beaten by his compatriot, world No.73 Felix Mantilla in five sets.

Alex Corretja, the No.15 seed, did not get past the first-round.

But Costa is confident that this trend will change and believes a Spaniard breaking through at one of the three other majors is just around the corner.

"For the moment, we're not winning, but I think we are going to play better and better in the Grand Slams," he declared. "It is just a matter of time, I think."

Costa's confidence largely comes from the vast improvement in the variety of facilities now available in his homeland.

"Ten years ago we didn't have any indoor courts or almost any hard courts. It is different, because in Spain I think it's more healthy for the body to play on clay for everybody.

"We could play the whole year outside. In other countries they have to play indoors on other surfaces. (But) it's just a matter of time I think (before Grand Slam success). Now we have more courts and we have this other mentality. Things are changing."

Mantilla, who is hoping to work his ranking back up towards a career-high of No.10, believes that Spanish players have a strong desire to succeed at Grand Slams away from the clay courts of Paris.

It is only at Wimbledon that he concedes it is tough for himself to do well. But his fourth-round appearance at this year's Australian Open gives him a chance to equal his career-best quarter-final appearance at this event in 1997. However, this comes after a run of five consecutive first-round defeats at Melbourne Park.

"Obviously, grass court is the one that has a little bit less options than the others," Mantilla said. "But I came here in 1997 and made the quarter-finals. Always I come here and say that I can play well because the heat is helping me, too, because I'm a guy who's physically strong and that helps me a lot.

"Clay is our natural surface and for sure we have more chances there. But Moya reached the finals here, Costa and me have reached the quarter-finals here. If you have the potential, then for sure, it's most important to win the French Open because it's our natural surface, but also if you do well here, it's very important as well."

As the No.4 seed, Ferrero, who survived a five-set struggle in the third-round against France's Fabrice Santoro on Friday, is seen as Spain's best hope of breaking the drought in Australia this time around.

Costa said tennis in Spain was already thriving. It will no doubt get even stronger if one of his compatriots can break through away from the clay.

"It's a great moment for tennis (in Spain). We have three top 10 players and 13 in the top 100, so they are doing a great job, the federation over there. Everybody is involved in tennis."

It's a scary thought for the rest of the world.

SO THERE!

BTW, congrats Juanqui for finally winning -- but you and ROGI, just get it up! [your 1st serve %, that is!! :p ]

Hi guys! :wavey:

First of all, let me say how ecstatic I am that Juanqui won such a gruelling match! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Congrats darling, you defeated the magician himself!

But on the other hand, I'm really mad! Don't you DARE, don't you EVEN DARE to suggest that Fabrice was faking his cramps! :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: That's the lowest of the low.

If there's one player who doesn't have an ounce of gamesmanship in him, it's Fabrice. I saw the second part of the match. Fabrice could hardly walk but he braved it out because he knew he can rely on his selection of shots. He's a great fighter and he gave it his all. You've obviously never cramped before or you would've known that cramps come and go. Fabrice was a walking zombie at the end of that match. And you know what he did? He could barely walk out of the court, couldn't stand on his feet, and you know what he did? He stopped and signed autographs! He lost, his legs were buckling under him, he was incredibly disappointed, and he graciously signed autographs for his fans. Now THAT is a classy guy. I swear to God he is the nicest guy on the tour.

To suggest that he's anything less than classy is absolutely ludicrous, just ask anyone who's followed tennis for years. Yeah, I know he was the enemy yesterday, but please, be very careful with accusation of that sort or you'll soon find yourself cursing at the ones made against your fave.

I'm sorry if I'm out of line, but I love Fabrice too much to just let this slide. I also have pms. :p It's a good thing I wasn't here last night or I would've started a fight when the name calling began. ;)

Congrats Fabrice, you played a wonderful match! Better luck next time. :) Thanks for not taking out my darling. ;)

Thanks TH for delivering the good news to me in the morning. :)

I have to go back to work now, see you later! :wavey:

I'm on your side, Layla, regarding Fabrice. He is far from my favourites and the reason is obvious: his record against Marat

I think that most of the French musketeers share the same excellent qualities of being real gentlemen on court (which, you would assume, should be more applicable to Rusedski given his nationality :p). I, personally, have never seen any signs of gamesmanship when they are on court. And if you look the way they apologise for mishits or lucky net bounces, you will see that they do it in a very genuine manner to make sure that the opponent was able to see them apologising.

:) Hi Lee, zosse, Layla, Hackie!

Love all your comments from late last night! Did you know Moya also lives in Geneva?? Hope his French has improved... I timed from 12.30 to 2.30am and just cut off Juanqui's final score I think... did they show his match point after Ferreira [glad he won] vs. Fish [yuk -- such a gross guy, crap behaviour -- THANK GOD HE'S OUT! one Amer down, still 2 to go]?

When the Aussies made the court faster to thwart the Spaniards, they forgot about the weather... most of the Spanish guys are NOT bothered by the heat, in fact, they prefer it -- Mantilla said he likes the hot weather -- look at what he did in TO in that heat vs. Lleyton!! HA HA! Already 2 Spaniards into the Rd 16. So VAMOS FELI and VICENTE today! [can Vicente pull an upset of Pandy??? not likely but I'm cheering for him anyway!]

Also good luck to: Kimmie, Blake, Eleni, Marat, Chanda [Hackie, you're right, Mary P looked awful!], Youzhny pls beat Novak [the guy w the least fashion sense] and the ACs doubles, plus, of course, my guy ROGI!!!!

In other men's results, while Ferrero survived another Spanish seed went down at Australian Open 2003 with French Open champion Albert Costa (No.8) succumbing to countryman Felix Mantilla in a five-set beauty.

Costa's defeat follows the exit of Carlos Moya (No.5) in the second-round and Alex Corretja (No.15) in the first-round.

Ferrero's showdown with Santoro turned out to be a must-watch marathon clash lasting more than three-and-a-half hours on Vodafone Arena. A clearly-exhausted Santoro was simply outlasted by the nimble Spaniard.

Fourth seed Juan Carlos Ferrero came through a three-and-a-half hour marathon with France's Fabrice Santoro to make the last 16.

The Spaniard, who reached the final of last year's French Open, triumphed 4-6 6-3 4-6 6-2 7-5.

But he was made to battle all the way by the plucky Frenchman, who saved four match points before eventually succumbing.

After the match Ferrero revealed he had played with a slight injury.

"In the first three sets, I felt some pain in my adductor. It was because of this I was a little frustrated when I lost the first and third sets."
bbc

Well, Juanqui had never gotten past the 3rd rd here, so this is a big improvement for him and for the SPANISH!!!! VAMOS!!! Hope his groin is OK!!!

Back to work...

J.C. FERRERO/F. Santoro
4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5

MODERATOR: Questions for Juan Carlos.

Q. How difficult was that match for you?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: You can see the score. Was very difficult for me. You know, I think Santoro, you never know which shot he going to hit. It's very difficult to play against him because, you know, he has a different shot every time, and he use every shot all the time.
But, you know, all the time I won against him, always in three sets when it's the best-of-three. Right now I win in five, so always is difficult to play against Santoro, always.

Q. At a time in the match you looked very frustrated.
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Sometimes.

Q. What made you stay in the match?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I think I stayed very good in the match in the fourth and in the fifth. You know, in the first three set, I felt some pain in my abductor because I had a little bit problems there. You know, I was more pain in my abductor than the court. It was because of this I was a little frustrate all the time when I lose the first and the third.
But right now I'm okay, and I feel better in the fourth and the fifth, I start to play very good, and also I serve unbelievable in the fifth. I think it was the key. I serve very good. I won very easy all my service in the fifth set. You know, I was very close all the time to try to break his serve.

Q. Do you know Mario Ancic?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I never play against him. I only saw him against Federer when he played in Wimbledon. I saw some part of the match of today against Luzcak. I saw that he has a very good serve, no mistakes from the base of the line, and he goes a lot of times to the net, so is going to be tough.

Q. Did you feel it was unfair to lose the first set?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No. No, no, no. The match was so long, you know, I have so many times to come back, you know, to try to play good. I never feel this.

Q. How is your leg now?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Is okay. Is okay. Is okay because I take some antiinflammatory before the match. I didn't feel the pain. I feel a little bit in the first set, but when I (inaudible), I still playing in the match, I start to feel better and better. Finally I finish the match without pain.

Q. When did it start to hurt you?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: After the match, in the last game against Lisnard, I felt a little bit of pain in my abductor. I tried to be better and better in these two days before. But I start the match with some pain. With the (inaudible), antiinflammatory, ultrasound and ice, I could finish the match without pain. So now I think is okay.

This makes me think that I'm not fully understanding how the game work, at least the scoring part. I thought the score we get is based on the Championship race point a player gained for the tournament, no? Do I only score if that player gain points in the Entry System instead? If so, then, damn, I picked Safin :( . I don't know why I got more money to play for this week then others who also have Juanqui as sticky, maybe that's the reason why? I was gonna ask but then I was too lazy to type the question:o . Now I think I really should have asked before this week. Oh well... Diss or anyone, pls explain. Thank a lot.

Vera,

There are two games inside our game. :p

When you chose a player, he will be able to score for you in two ways:
1. if he goes deep, he gains points, and you get those according to his Champs Race scoring. :)
2. by the gap between the 52 week ranking system, he changes the Entry Ranking points, and you get or lose money.

For example. You bought Marat. Well, Marat has to defend a final, and that means 700 Entry points. Or, as our prices are arranged according to that ranking, 700 euros. Had he lost round one, you would get one point in the race and lose 695 euros.
In the other hand, Agassi didnt play. So, if he wins the tournament, he will give anyone who picked him 200 race points and 1000 euros. ;)

But dont base your game on the entry points players have to defend. The money will only work for you to buy new players and stuff. What counts in our scoring system are the RACE points you get. That´s how I rank the players. And you are leading it all in that department. ;)

I think every American player grows up having Ahole and JMac as their role model, that's why they all behave like spoiled brat, except James, who's model is obviously Arthur Ashe, the classiest of them all.

I think going to Harvard do make a difference. The only reason I don't like Wayne is he is pain in the neck for Pete.

Ill have to go now, so Ill write my wishlist for this night. ;)

- Hewitt please spank the horse and send him home definitely. :p
- Lopez keep on going so I can finally get a match on tv if you clash with Lleyton. :)
- Federer keep going!
- Kick some french ass, ELENI! :D
- Good luck to Koukalova (I REALLY liked her when she beat Seles, and I guess she will grow on me fast. :p) in a tough match against red hot Shaugnessy
- Kimmy keep on bageling... ;)
- Coetzer and Rubin should go ahead.

Now, Ill go :wavey: Have fun you people

On another note, I agree 200% with Layla on Fab... You guys were frustrated and all, and I totally understand Santoro payed for that.
But not in a million years I agree with any of those name-callings and aggressions to him. He is one of the most talented players out there, a pleasure to watch, and a wonderful guy.
Better luck next time!

PS - IM MAD I had to get the new prick cursing and hitting chairs and couldnt see the Ferrero-Santoro epic. :(

Hey Lee. Haven't been talking to you lately. I've wanting to talk hockey with you. Since the Sens' owner is repurchasing his team, Sens is about to be saved. I'm so hoping that it will happen.

And Sebastien Lareau retired . I was wondering where he was last year, and he was out the whole year due to injury. Now he's gone . I really like him, he's my top canadian player.

Wish I can stay here to chat more with you. But I have to go now. So I'll check back here later.

Hi Emma! Want some brownies? I just bake my very first brownies. It's not disasterious but not very good. I have those white chocolate chips sprinkled on top and they were supposed to melt in 3-4 minutes after baking. I was supposed to stir the mixture then so it create a swirl but those chips stayed on and in the end, I have some brown chocolate chips in the brownies..........

Want some?

I guess I was the only one rooting for Fish, eh? I think it's a shame he had a meltdown - he's clearly not mentally mature yet, but that will come. As I said in GM - he's surely going ot be mortified and feel like crap for the entire outburst.

That said, I like Wayne, so it's all good. That, and I picked Wayne for my team - had a inkling that he had "quarterfinals" written all over him.

Anyhow - I'm with you about Fabrice Layla. It's a shame he cramped up, even though I wanted Ferrero to win.

For the first time in a while I managed to follow a tight Ferrero match without going ballistic on his opponent (some of you may recall when I suggested that in a couple years hewitt would be joining Jim in the music industry ;)). This is of course, because I quite like Fab - one of my faves.

But anyhow - thank god he's through. I hope he's alright for mario :)

Hi Becca!

I like Fish up to the point he behaved badly. I actually feel like his game is better than Roddick. May be it's the TV coverage to be blamed as these kids growing up watching excellent examples from Johnny Mac or Jimmy Connors, etc. As a result, they think ranting their anger on umpire is a good way to excellent tennis.

I got a bad vibe off him in the match against Moya (never seen him before). While he didn't exactly misbehave, I got a distinct feeling that he was another American brat. LOL, I had no idea he would confirm my suspicions so soon. :D

As for his tennis, he does have an interesting game and much better weapons than Roddick.

No. At that time, I was juggling with checking the matches on the net and helphing Vince with his homework and preparing dinner, my brian basically shutdown and I did everything in reflex. Of course it didn't help when my whole body was aching (still are) with the vigorous TKD lesson. My left hand ring finger and right shin were bruised after the sparring session.

If you looked into the thread that Diss put out for Week3/4, you'll find that I had Roddick on my team. I did not recognise it until this morning (I actually read it last night) that he's on my list. I almost think that Diss had it wrong so I checked my spread sheet again and oooooohhhh he's there.

How often do you loose them a day? I have my TV, VCR and audio centre hanging on the wall together and all the remotes are of similar shape and light grey colour. Plus they are all over the place as my kitchen and living room are made like one room so I often just carry the remote to the "kitchen" if I want to watch TV while eating. Hey now, my intention wasn't to patronize or chastise you, I just wanted to express my anger and defend my fave against unjust accusations. I know it's easy for me to talk, I wasn't there getting frustrated and nervous as hell, but I really think I would've jumped to his defence anyway. Like I said, I'm glad I wasn't there.

I appologize for the tone of my post, it was a bit extreme, because I just saw the end of the match before I read those posts and I felt really sorry for Fabrice, even though I couldn't be happier that Juanqui won. He just looked soooo tired and drained. And then I read the posts from last night and they really struck a nerve. But I should've waited to calm down before posting that. I didn't mean to piss you off, I could've gone about it much better. ;)

I'm not angry with anyone. I was just a bit hurt that you, Zosse, and Diss would think that we'd intentionally be mean-spirited to a player. I don't speak for Scott because he was a bit over the top, but for the most part I thought we kept it pretty mature.

Besides, all we had to go on re: cramps were the stills I was getting from the netcam, and you have to admit, if it was any other player, you'd probably cry foul too at one o'clock in the morning.

At any rate, what's done is done and the match is over. I feel better, you feel better, we all feel better now that we've had this big spiel. So let's get on with it! :)

Well, she was pretty fit at the end of last season as well, but compared to the beginning of last season, yes I think her fitness has improved :) I know after her arm injury she worked very hard to get back into shape and take care of that arm so she wouldn't have to have surgery.

But on a completely shallow note, she seems to get more and more pretty every time I see her :) Like a big ray of sunshine :)

Hehehe :) From ESPN:

Ride on: Switzerland's Roger Federer had a lifetime first during his week at Doha. He rode a horse for the first time.

After driving up the dunes in a sports utility vehicle, Federer was joined by Britain's Greg Rusedski and they took a ride on Arabian horses in the desert and also got a chance to hold a falcon, the national symbol of Qatar.

"It was fun," Federer said afterward. "I've never been on a horse before, never saw a falcon, and I've never driven in the sand before. It was a little bit like driving in the snow, which I'm used to."

Surf's up: Carlos Moya also experienced something new recently but on an entirely different continent. Moya ventured to Australia's most famous beach, Bondi, to learn to surf.

Moya, who is surrounded at home by the more tranquil waters on the island of Mallorca, began by learning to get a feel for the waves by laying on the board and riding the waves into the shore. After 'mastering' a few waves in this position he then attempted to catch waves standing up.

"This is the first time I've tried surfing and it's so much fun," Moya said. "I was told by the instructor that by learning to stand up within 15 minutes was a very good effort. He also said most people take about two hours to stand. I'll be doing this again."

Now this is getting ridiculous. After so many withdrawals at the US Open 2002, dozen of players missing the AO 2003 and about 5 (not sure of exact number) others withdrawing later, don't you think that ATP should raise the question if there should be any changes made to the schedule of tournaments?

I know there is a theoretical argument that nobody can force players to play all these tournaments, but they have no other choice as to take part in all slams, masters + some other IS tournaments if they want to stay at the top of rankings. I mean there are so many good players on the circuit that nobody is guaranteed a safe run to the latter stages of any tournament these days. So every ranking point is very precious.

The current situation is bad for players, their fans, sponsors, tournaments and the entire tour as well.

Safin pulls out with injured wrist
Associated Press

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Third-seeded Marat Safin withdrew from the Australian Open on Saturday with an injured left wrist, giving Rainer Schuettler a walkover into the fourth round.

Safin lost to Thomas Johansson in the Australian Open final last year.

The 2000 U.S. Open champion had been scheduled to play Schuettler later Saturday.

"In my first match I fell down and felt some pain and in the second match I had an injection, which is why I didn't feel anything,'' he said. "It's a small cut in the ligament and the doctors said it would take about two-to-three weeks'' to heal.

Safin beat Dutchman Raemon Sluiter and Spaniard Albert Montanes, each in four sets, in the first two rounds.

"It's very bad luck because I started to play better and to fly 24 hours to get here without any success is not really good. But that's life,'' said Safin, who is right-handed but has a two-handed backhand.

"I didn't need the doctor to tell me; I could feel it myself.''

The 22-year-old Russian had been troubled by shoulder and back problems since arriving in Australia.

He withdrew from the Sydney International last week with an injured right shoulder, diagnosed as an inflammation of the rotator cuff.

Back soreness also affected his mobility in his first matches at Sydney and in Melbourne.

Hi guys :wavey:

My hockey team won, yay :bounce:

And c'mon, Misha and Feli, fight fight fight.

Marat and Xman    This is the worse day of the tournament. Now Marat can't defend his points and he's gonna fall . Malisse has a heart condition. It was never a doubt that it wasn't psychological but physical problem in Wimby, was it? Irregular heartbeat is what he has, it's very dangerous. I remembered that basketball player died several years ago during practice bcos of that. So I hope he gets better also (even though it's not his heart that has problem this time, but I read in the GM that he's going to have another fixing of the heart kind of work done after AO).

Anyway, these are bad news lead me to worry about Juanqui. That he has that groin injury. Even though he said it's okay but who knows, players tended to down play their injury (except certain players who like to exaggerate them). I mean, we didn't hear Marat said anything and he hit us with a bomb . So I hope everything is really okay with Juanqui. I'll be praying for him.

Dissident
01-18-2003, 03:12 AM
He started to feel pain in his arm. His game started sinking badly, you could see it was hard for him to hit the forehand, especially some slices he tried, that were beyond bizarre.
He couldnt continue, and tried to hang on. He lost almost 15 games in a row, and called the trainer around four times for assistance. He massaged, touched, rubbed, and tried to take some pill to not feel the pain and keep on playing.
But it just crushed his confidence, and he couldnt do anything right.
In addition to that, dont forget it was the same opponent that took him away from the dream of reaching the Wimbledon final. He was injured, but it was aggravated by his mental weaknesses, Im sure.
Too bad, he had a good chance of winning, since David was not playing particularly well.

Hi Diss and Vera!

That's too bad for Xavier... and Marat... :(

I hope Juanqui will be OK for his next tough match vs. that Rogi-defeater Ancic!! It won't be easy!

Now Novak got the 2nd, so did Martin and looks like El Ay is on his way... :(

I guess by 11.30pm it will be just the perfect timing to show Pandy's match... pray for a miracle that Vicente will beat him! ;) I must go now...

At least Rogi won easily!! Good for him!

Bonne nuit!

Hi Vera! Congrat on Canucks win! It seems it's a regular stuff now. Flames' honeymoon period with new coach seems to be over now.

I haven't log onto Canada.com for a while. Spending all my time on tennis. :o so don't have any news on Sen or Flames quite a while.

Ah, I just missed you, Diss.

Thanks for the report on Xavier. It has most definitely been a weird day in the tennis world, and frankly I'm glad most of my faves were spared. Last year at the US Open, the weird day came during the fourth round, and almost everyone crashed out -- I had no one left after that

C'mon, James! :) You've got this one in hand ;) And davai, Misha! :bounce::bounce::bounce:

Not really. They lost 3 out of last 5. And every team is closing in in our division, like the Wilds and Oilers. So we just have to be carefully not to let the lead melt away. The Flames' honeymoon was over, that's true, that's since Nashville visited Flames and Nashville's coach is even newer. Then today, Canadiens fired their coach and get a new one. Look out for those new coach team, very dangerous as if everyone are granted at least 5-6 games winning after the change.

Martin just hand the set to James. Winner/UE is 3/12 for Martin.
