Well, I'm gonna go get ready for my TV coverage. I see that Roddick is on MCA and he's up right after Martina's double. I think Rdick's match is inevitable *sign*. Oh well, I'll just cheer hard for Voinea.

Rogi will cruise thru, I think.

Hmm, Coria is hard to predict.
Im sure this is gonna be a hell of a match. Im puzzled about whom to pick. Jarkko had a very good win, but so did Mago beating a fellow Argentine and stuff. And Coria can really play well on hard courts.
I think Jarkko is still the more fragile of both mentally (although Coria is not a lot better), but his serve is loads more of a weapon. Coria is smart and patient sometimes, but rushes the game when he gets under pressure.

Hard to predict, really hard to predict...

Really, you think Jarkko is more mentally vulnerable? His midmatch lapses are all that I really see wrong with his game, especially now that he's cleaned up the foot faults :D

Thanks for the points, though, I'll keep that in mind as I watch the scores tomorrow night. No way in hell this will ever be on TV  I'm kinda hoping that it's not a 5 setter, but knowing Jarkko . . .

Now that you said, TH, I guess Jarkko has he edge on the mental too.
But Coria can be a genious when he is 100%. Too bad he usually isnt. I saw him play at 100% a couple of times, and he can be incredibly consistent.
But also, he can throw a ton of bad plays and start rushing every point.

Maybe I should wait till tomorrow to say somethig, my brain is fried.

Some unrelated tennis bits -

REgarding ranks:

Blake can make the top 20, if not this tournament, then in the next month or two. He is a mere 200 points off atm.

Nalbandian is almost a lock for the top ten. He's 100 points of Henman, and did nothing of note before Estoril. Its not a total lock, but as close to a lock as you are going to get.

Jarkko can pop the top 30 with another match win.

:wavey: Good morning, thread!

Rebecca, thanks for the interesting ranking notes :) I've been following James & Jarkko and am relieved that they aren't doing a backward slide :) Jarkko is poised to become the highest-ever ranked Finnish tennis player, and its all very exciting! :) I didn't realize he was that close to the Top 30, though -- he was in the 30s and 40s for most of last season.

And Nalbandian at the top! I don't think anybody saw that coming before Wimbly. Many congrats to him :)

Diss, I hope you're feeling better today, I know it takes time to get over a bad match loss :( I'm already getting excited for Jarkko's match tonight, and I don't even know if I'll be around to see it :o

Not a particularly good day for me. :( On top of everything, my computer froze again. It's working now so hopefully it was just a one-time thing and not the return of my recurrent problem. *fingers crossed* But I'm nervous as hell and just managed to calm down. I really don't need this now.

I can't believe Guga lost. I'm so sorry Dissident! :( *hug* My other faves among the men fared ok thanks to Hewitt, Schüttler, Blake and Safin, although I did lose Olivier Rochus.

But women were a disaster, expect for Kimmy who white-washed her opponent! :D Well done Kimmy! :bounce: But Seles lost because she twisted her ankle, Maja Matevzic retired  and Mary Pierce lost even though she managed to bagel Rubin. :(

But still, Guga was the most devastating loss yesterday. Damn Stepanek! :fiery: I hope Hewitt puts you in your place! :p

Hi thread :wavey:

I'm just dropping in to see if everyone has already recovered after yesterday's biggest disappointment. *hugs* *hugs* *hugs* (yes, I mean Guga's loss - hey, I'm hugging myself too :o so I'm lucky that nobody can see me). Now I hope the Czech can take out the Potato to make any use of this upset :D (although, very unlikely it will happen)

My Marat marches on, with some hiccups and he'll need to play better against Rainer Schuettler. I can only hope he'll bring Dr. Hyde on court on Saturday ;)

Nice picture thread, TH ;) It can get pretty big quite soon if JCF continues to play so well.

Now I must get back to work. Layla was complaining about the unexpected work load thrown at her. What can I say - yesterday I received another horrifying assignment: to translate ~50 pages in small print copied from the book on biotechnology (what can be worse). So I don't have time to watch any tennis at all :( . I'm even not taping anything since I won't have time to watch these tapes any time soon :fiery: I just occasionally watch a game or two on Eurosport to clear my head from all these horrible biotechnological terms :(

Good luck to everyone fighting for their rights (be it against your uni or PC) ;)

Hi Emma, TH! :wavey:

Not yet recovered from Guga's lost. Probably have to wait until his next win but it will be awhile unless he change his schedule.

Allan, good to have student union as a back up. Good luck with your fight against bureaucracy.

Layla, hope your computer will behave itself. Since my wish and prayers are not very good these days, guess that's all I can say.

Zosse, work really sucks but just can't live without them. :p Translating biotechology documents, good luck too. I remembered once I need to work with another girl on translating a printer user manual in Japanese. That printer was very new and not available outside Japan, my boss bought it when he's in Japan. The problem was all manual were in Japanese. There's a girl in the company know Japanese, the problem was she know nothing about computer terms and most of the computer terms used in the manual are actually English but use Japanese phonetics, so the girl tried to pronounce the word in Japanese and I tried to catch the English meaning.

Enough rambling for the day.

I watch the tennis I taped while I was sleeping during my lunch break (gotta eat sooner or later ;) ) and Eurosport coverage has been a bit odd, so there's usually not much to see from the 8 hours of material gathered overnight. Hi all (if anybody) :wavey:

Enough about work. The only consolation I find is wishful thinking that a lot of work means a lot of $$$$$ which would allow me to take some time off and fly to some tournament - for instance, to Wimbly since I have no TV coverage at all :(. Maybe the thought of going to RG will ease your pain as well, Layla (even if it's not going to happen)?

I was doing almost what you said Layla - I watch the Australian Stories (and have dinner simultaneously to save precious time ;) ). Since I know myself, I'm useless at watching video at night. I need just about 10-15 minutes to get asleep if I'm sitting/laying on something softer than a wooden chair (that's how I watched Marat's match a couple of nights ago :o)

And I agree regarding the covergae this year. I do not have so many matches I really want to see (which is good given my current work load). Just looked at the schedule of play: that's a real shame that Lindsay is not on any of the main courts tonight  (she "deserved" only show court 2). So much respect for the former champion :(

Hence why they said they'd be amending the regulations in their email to me LOL.... sore losers :p

Jarkko has a negative attitude.
Its simple: its not his day. Coria is playing good tennis, and seems more confident.
I was afraid he would win in the mental game, and I guess I was right.
Jarkko is still unexperienced in Slams, Coria is a little less, and that is costing him the match.

He is trying, mixing things up, hitting good approaches, but he cant make two good shots in a row. Coria is basically a retriever, so it´s hurting the finnish.

But it´s nothing to be ashamed of! I told you, Coria is a great player! And Jarkko beat Kafel already, so the future looks good.

It certainly is hard to be a fan... esp when you're a real diehard fan who expends almost as much if not more energy and time to your beloved player(s)!! So far Escude is not doing much... I can't stand it!! Coria plays AA next? Forget it! Lee was supposed to challenge AA -- what a joke that match was!

I feel almost ill when Rogi loses... but when Juanqui loses exc for TMC, I don't feel so bad because he's more mature and gets on w the next match and gets over his loss sooner... he deals w it better than "baby" Rogi. I think if Rogi can improve his mental and basically "grow up", he can certainy win a slam.

Speaking of Rogi, he and Yves just took the match!! 6-3 6-4!

I see Costa took 1st set 6-3 but Felix came back 63 in the 2nd!! I'm happy for him! It was nice to see Felix win over Lleyton in TO 1st rd -- he was happy that the crowd supported him cos they don't usually -- he was playing so well too! It was a joy to watch and I had fun at that match until the rain came down to stop it.

Oh well, have to check the hockey game -- tennis doesn't start until it finishes.

Juanqui has his own mental fragilities, but has definitely improved when he gets down in a match -- he doesn't get down on himself. Roger is improving, and when he completely gets his head together he will really shine :) Now that he's dealt with the pressure of being a favorite for a Slam I think he's going to do much better. And the only good thing about crashing out of the French & Wimbly is that he has NOTHING to defend in those places ;)

But you've seen my extreme reactions when my boys (and to a lesser extent, my girls) lose. I think everyone thinks I'm crazy when I cry hysterically when someone I don't even know loses a tennis match, but to me it's much more than that. Unfortunately, it's all part of being a true fan -- taking the good with the bad.

Jarkko is definitely improving! [hate to say it but he's doing better than Micha] It's also nice the crowd liked him -- that really helps!

Don't be afraid to say that, he is doing better than Micha, even in my estimation  I was rereading the Other Swiss Players Thread recently and came across an article after the DC tie questioning Michel's picture of himself -- he still sees himself as the #2 player, behind Roger, and until he changes that mental attitude he's not going to improve. His game is there, as he's shown us this season :) If and when the attitude improves, he will improve in the rankings, is my thought.

Don't know if he took the loss well. But his fans didn't. I was so upset for weeks :o . And still upset about that :( . If he can't get to the Semi, I'll be very upset for another few weeks, I think. Gosh, I'm just too demanding a fan. But I cry hard too when he lost, except that I only cry when no one is around:) .

Anyway, he already missed a lot of break points in the first game. So hopefully, he can convert next time. And that netcam, does it move at all.

Vamos Juanqui.

Bananas' Days May Be Numbered, Scientist Says
Wed Jan 15, 3:34 PM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - It is one of the world's favorite fruits, but the banana hasn't had sex in years and its days may be are numbered.

Without scientific help the sterile, seedless fruit could disappear with 10 years, according to a Belgian plant pathologist.

Emile Frison, the head of the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain in Monpellier, France, said the fruit lacks the genetic diversity to fight off diseases and pests that are plaguing banana plantations and only biotechnology and genetic manipulation may be able to save it.

"Frison sees it as the only hope for the banana," New Scientist said on Wednesday.

Without assistance banana production could drop and mark the beginning of the end of the fruit.

"We may even see the extinction of the banana as both a lifesaver for hungry and impoverished Africans and as the most popular product on the world's supermarket shelves," the magazine added.

Agassihole breaks for 2-0 in the third :(
Costa is up 5-4 in the third :(
James lost the first set in a tiebreak in his doubles match :(

Just checked the stats for Juanqui's match and

His first serve % is only 45% but he's winning 80% of the points on his first serve and 67% on his second, and he's hit 15 winners to 5 unforced errors :eek::eek: He's had six chances to break but the crafty French-turned-Swiss (I didn't know he lived in Switzerland, or that he was left-handed :o) has staved off so far . . .

Hi, TH! :wavey: :)

At least it looks like Agassihole won't enjoy another steamroller run, if Escude loses, I hope it's 18-20 in the fifth. :p But I'd rather he win of course... since he is also on my team. Geez, I hope my team doesn't turn out to be one massive jinx list. :o I don't think any of my picks have won yet :o

LOL, none of my pics have won yet, either, but I decided to gamble on Marat instead of Potatoman or Agassihole -- I'm never going to buy either of them (and hence, probably never win the game, but oh well).

Well, considering the only way a player moves up in the entry system is by successfully defending and gaining points for any given week . . . . ;) It's why I didn't buy Wayne Ferreira. He was a QF last year, but I don't think he can get further than that this year. Just for example.

Ah.... so your budget improves if the entry points of your picks go up?

I kinda didn't really read all the rules too carefully cos at the time I was supposed to I had to fly back to Malaysia in a hurry....

Dang... no wonder Martin picked both Hewitt and Agassi... I was wondering about that. It make so much sense pointwise... there's practically zip to defend between the 2 of them, and they're the on-paper favourites for the tourney...

I can't believe the whole defending points business only came to me like 5 minutes ago

After Stepanek took out Guga, I can't see anyone in that section can take Hewitt out. Although he is very pricey, I still want to buy him. And as TH said, he can only gain you more buying money on next round.
