Oh, I totally thought he could have won! And I am so ecstatically happy he did!

He's going to face Canas or Coria in the next round, not sure how I like that matchup. But I'm going to buy him anyway!

I wonder if the Americans got any coverage . . . probably not :(

Oh my fucking God.... sorry to have to vent again, but I can't bloody believe it.... now the scholarships office are trying to shaft me of my thesis binding allowance.... when I got my scholarship for my PhD, the paperwork explained that it would cover the expenses associated with binding my thesis UP TO $800. Didn't say anything else. So, I'd organized to get 10 copies done and the total quote came to $764. OK, I thought. But, NO. Apparently, they've called the binders and asked them to stop for the moment because they have this 'unwritten rule' that if a student asks for more than 5 copies done they think it's excessive. Now they're being vindictive and telling me that they will ONLY pay for the two library copies. FUCK! An 'unwritten rule'?! What the fuck do they think they're trying to do? A classmate of mine managed to get 12 (TWELVE!) copies of her thesis done!! Why the heck are they trying to put the thumbscrews on me? The effing damn scholarship I got was one of the most prestigious the university had to offer, they only give out ONE of those a year! And THEY CHOOSE TO SCREW ME?! I am so fighting this. I am now trying to get in contact with this classmate of mine who had 12 copies done for some more details... if it so happens that she had all 12 of her copies paid for, I am so going to rip their necks off and shit down their throats.

Ahhh, sorry to hear that Allan :( . You definitely should fight, don't let them screw you. I mean, if you have your classmate having 12 copies, then there's no way they won't allow you. So just fight.

I want to vent a little too. I was so tired today, I fell asleep watching Lindsey's match, missed the whole TB. And when I woke up, I saw the last shot of Juanqui . It was his match recap and I missed it   . Can't believe that! The way ESPN is, that's the only way I got to see him on TV, on the recap and I missed the only chance today   .

Well, what can I say.

But at least I got to watch Zhenya's match when he came back and got the 4th match. It was on ESPN thanks to Ahole's 100 match. Did you watch it, Hackie? Anyway, thankful that he at least got to the 5th, I just don't want to hear those commentators saying him tanked another match again.

Now, I'm just too tired to do anything and I can't even finish watching Lindsay's match. I hope she wins it. Bed time.

Ugh..... I am so pissed off, and stressed out, that I have started smoking again :(

Yup.... that classmate of mine had all 12 of her copies paid for  She finished a few months ahead of me. Late last year, she actually got hers bound first and paid for it herself and then took the receipt in to the uni and claimed the amount back, no probs..... this year I've been told that 'Oh, now, if you get the right paperwork done beforehand, the university can pay the binders directly!'.... looks like it wasn't so sweet a deal after all. Fuckers.

My classmate thinks it's pretty shit too... in fact she suggested I also formally refer the matter to the Student Association here. So I'll be doing that tomorrow.

Allan, so sorry about your woes. *hugs* This is all suck bull-shit! Don't let them treat you this way. :fiery: I'm glad you're taking some action against them. May the force be with you! ;)

Don't start smoking again because of this. :( Otherwise they win on more than one account. Just try to relax a bit. It will all sort itself out, you'll see. Good luck! :)

Vera, more hugs for you. I know how heartbreaking it must feel for you to have missed the replay of Juanqui's match. I'd be devastated too. I was soooo pissed off that Eurosport chose to show Costa's match instead of Juanqui's, even though it was already announced. :fiery: But don't worry, there'll be plenty more opportunities for you to see him. ;)

I'm watching Moya's match at the moment. What the hell is going on with him. He was doing so well and now he's in big trouble. He lost the 2nd set tie-break on a very poor performance and now he's a break down in the 3rd. VAMOS CARLOS!

Juanqui is playing against Fabrice?!? Why oh why do my faves have to cancel each other out? :( That's gonna be a tough match for Juanqui, but Fabrice never fared very well in the slams.

My aunty called me today and told me we just received 200 pages to translate in about 2 months. Yes, that's the same two months that my employed will be piling texts on me, on top of all the horrorscopes. I think I'm finally beginning to crack. I've been sitting here for an hour crying and shaking, because I can't live like this anymore.:sad::sad::sad::sad::sad: I have no idea how I'm going to survive until April. I'm already exhausted. Sometimes I think that the only way I'm going to get some rest is if I have a total nervous breakdown and they take me to a mental institution. Don't worry, that's not going to happen, I'll just have to grit my teeth and turn myself into a robot. But I have decided to tell everyone that I'm going away for the 2 weeks of Roland Garros, so I can pretend I'm not here and I can enjoy some tennis in peace.

Now I have a headache but I better go back to work right away, so I'll see you later. :wavey:

DP -- that really sucks!! I hope you can get some answers about this from them. 'Unwritten rule' my ass!! They just don't want to pay  And if they require that you have a bound copy of your thesis in the library, what the hell do they expect you to do?

 at Moya. Does he suddenly have this thing against Fish? That's the one he lost to last week, too. And :eek::eek: Juanqui vs Fabrice? That's going to be a tough one, too. I haven't even looked to see who Jarkko faces next -- either Canas or Coria.

Layla -- there is no way you can handle all of that. Well, that's obvious if you've already broken down :( Fucking hell, why are so many people getting screwed over here? I've been trying to sort out my work schedule for this semester, and it looks like I'm going to have to go in every day and that really cuts into my free time

Also, I want to say it now: depending on when Juanqui's match is tomorrow, someone might have to do the netcam captures for at least part of it because my night class starts  I had completely forgotten about it. I don't think he's going to beat Fab in an hour (like he did Lisnard :D) but just in case . . . and I'll be putting up the netcam pics later today.

Anyway, back to Layla -- is there no way you can refuse at least some of this work? :( ARGH! But it's a good plan for Roland Garros. Make it known now and hopefully you won't be in this mess then. Juanqui will be waiting for you; he can be your light at the end of the tunnel :)

Finally go through the last 2 pages of post here. The internet is so slow I put everything in one post.

I did not set my VCR for taping and so miss the Jarkko matches. The match was no doubt cut off when Lindsay start playing. That's the time I went upstair to sleep and found there is no recording.

Layla, just hang on. You are one tough cookie. Just try to do one thing at a time. Last year when I knew I had 2 months to uproot my family from Canada to move to US, I kept telling myself "I know I have a million things to do but I can only do one thing at a time". BTW, that 2 months are June and July, so I missed both FO and Wimbly.

Allan, just remember one thing when you deal with those assholes in Uni, don't let them know they upset you! It may be easier said than done, but, just pretend to be calm even you're smoking inside (in case you're smoking).

Now it's time for me to vent some steam. I watched Lindsay's match this morning and I gave myself some time before posting.:fiery: :fiery:

If I'm her coach, I will give her a real spanking on her behind. How could she said 'I really need to learn how to serve again' during a match!!!!:fiery: :fiery: It's loud enough that you can hear it clearly on TV. In first set, she managed to waste 3 (consecutive) set points on Iroda's serve and another 3 on tie break. Even after she hit a return winner, her body language was like, "Damn! The ball should paint the line instead of just in. I should be able to do better". And this happen a few times during the match. It's a miracle she won the match when you look at the statistics. Iroda has 46 winners to 34 UE and Lindsay has 39 to 43. Again, this match shows the difference between a good player to a top ten player. Iroda basically outplayed Lindsay but she cracked under pressure. For 3 sets in a roll, Iroda gave 3-4 set points to Lindsay. Her double faults came at crucial game. Well, for Lindsay, she was already so down on herself that whether the game was to stay on the set or not did not seem any difference.

Even blah blah on Lindsay, time to get on the commentary on ESPN. It is great they have Jimmy there. He said very good things about Juanqui (which is justify) and believe he can go thru a few more rounds in AO but he does not think he can win it. He does think he can win FO. Also, he is brutally honest about Lindsay's match.

OK! I need to say something positive about Lindsay's match. On her last match point, I could see positive body language and guess what, she won the point and the match. Hopefully, after going through a tough match like this and came out as a winner, she gain some of her confidence back and know she can close out a match at crunch time.

Take another look at the schedule and there are lots of players playing both single and double, like Malisse, Nanbandain.

I don't think Rogi will have a permanent partnership with any other players in double since he is not likely to play lots of doubles. I think he may play more with other Swiss players since it may help Davis Cup matches I think that's also what Guga's been doing, he plays with Sa in other tournaments but he only play singles in Slam.

In the fifth, they were already on Lindsay and just show the last 2 points of the match. And I don't think I fell asleep anytime before Kafel's match was over. So i think I did get all they show of his match on tape.

Okay, if Seb lose to Nico, I won't be too upset. But in my mind, Seb is destined to upset Ahole in this tourney, so I think he'll get thru :D .

You think ESPN will show a French and Ecudorian match. They only time this will happen is they are in the finals. :D :D

I also agree with you that Seb is the most likely player that can take AA out in bottom half of the draw.

That would be too bad. I think she should let her pride down a little. So what if she can't beat the Williams and be #1 again. She's still a very very good tennis player. But then, maybe she lost the love of the game and don't want to play anymore. In that case, I don't blame her for leaving.

No, I have no doubt that it will never happen. If a French and Ecudorian are in the final, they will show it taped 2 days later:p.

You know, of 3 days coverage so far, the only one that I care to watch is last nite with Zhenya and Lindsay. I mean, 2 Ahole matches, Roddick, Williams... that's all so far. And I watched JenJen's match bcos she was upset. I much prefer to watch anyone but the Americans. And can't they be a little considerate. I mean, do they really have to show the whole damn AA bagel match yesterday. Thought it's only 80 mins, that's 80 mins totally wasted. They just can't let any opportunity of worshipping AA go:rolleyes: .

It's a blessing that Rusedski isn't on the DC team. I don't think he's won too many DC match for Britain. I read in my DC 2000 book and he was such an ass, he lost to Nico and he decided to walk out the last match . Do you know in US and Canada, people with gun at home have the believe that if you shot a burgler at home, you better killed him/her. Otherwise, you may get prosecuted or sued.

I predicted Coria would be a great player since the first time I saw him, when he won a chalenger in Brazil about two years and a half ago
And the same to Jarkko when he had that incredible Stockholm run in 2001. :D

Coria vs Canas was one hell of a messed up match. The calls were TERRIBLE all along. Javier Moreno was a complete fool. They made MANY complaints and he did nothing. Such a loser.
Canas even yelled something like "Why do we have to have a problem in every single point of this match? Its me ot its him, always a complaint! Do something!"
A little later, he overruled a call and Canas tossed his racquet to clap him. :D
Anyway, Coria won, and the next match can be wonderful. :D

And to Allan, I have this to say:

Universities are SHIT! when they want to make your life complicated.
I have two stories. One just happened now: I signed up for my classes and stuff. We do that this way: we fill a form that goes into the database, and the computer automatically arranges the schedule according to free dates you chose and stuff. Well, it´s supposed to work in a way that the people with the highest grades get the vacancies for the classes before, and then the others with low grades. I sent my form, and got an answer that one of the classes was full. I called and they said that it was full indeed. I said I doubted there were 20 grades better than mine in the whole fucking Architecture, let alone among the ones wanting to take the same classes! :fiery: I ended up talking to the Coordinator of Architecture, and she promised to give me an answer. Well, she never called, and theres no way someone will pick that goddamned telephone up.
I dont have a clue what will happen now  And to make it worse, apparently there´s something wrong with my grades, and so they have in the computer a lower grade (average? is it how you call when you get all your grades, add them together and stuff?) there. Thats probably what put me down on the list and made me lose my spot in the class! I´m so pissed off!!! :fiery:

The second happened last year, when my dad passes away.
According to the brazilian laws, you should be able to study for free once your legal tutor (in case my dad used to pay for my college) dies. Well, I went there to see how that would work. They just then let me know I SHOULD HAVE filled on a paper where the name of who would pay it for me would be written. Therefor, I would have the situation all sorted out, and could use the benefit.
Well, everything would be fine, unless for the fact that I received that when I entered the shitty university, when I was around 17. And they never gave me the fill or anything. It was written in small letters in some book of rules they give us once we get in. GREAT!
I did all I could, shouted my ass off at them, but nothing worked.

ASSHOLES! They can hurt you or make these nasty things with you, but make them pay LISTENING to you. Thats what they hate the most: listening to the truth!

Alright, sorry... :o

Hingis 'not even thinking of a comeback'
By NESHA STARCEVIC, Associated Press Writer
January 15, 2003

Martina Hingis might never play another competitive tennis match because of foot injuries.

The former No. 1-ranked player and owner of five Grand Slam tournament titles had surgery on her right ankle in October 2001 and on her left ankle in May.

"It is quite possible that that I will never play top-level tennis again, because my feet don't allow it,'' the 22-year-old Hingis told the Swiss news agency Sport Information in an interview published Wednesday.

After the second operation, Hingis pulled out of the French Open and Wimbledon -- the first majors she missed since turning pro in 1994. She returned to the tour in August, then went back to rehab in October.

"I am not even thinking of a comeback,'' she said.

Hingis has been playing recreational tennis the past two months. But when she practices more seriously, she said, pain spreads through her feet and ankles.

"Tennis was and remains my passion. But I've also grasped that after eight years on the tour, I will only return if I can practice without pain,'' Hingis said in the interview. "Competition is no fun if you can't come in perfectly prepared.''

Hingis was just 16 years, three months old when she won the first of her three Australian Open titles in 1997, making her the youngest Grand Slam singles champion of the 20th century.

She made six straight finals at the Australian Open, winning the first three and losing the last three. She also won the 1997 Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles, and lost the French Open final that year to Iva Majoli.

Hingis spent a total of 209 weeks at No. 1 in the WTA Tour rankings, but she has slipped to 11th after being sidelined 10 of the last 16 months.

Hingis has been tuning in to the Australian Open on television this week and said, "It was fun watching the others run around in the heat.''

She said WTA Tour needs to realize that the crowded schedule is endangering the health of the sport's stars.

"If a player is at the top and always plays until the end of the tournaments, she's sacrificing her health to the tour quite quickly,'' Hingis said.

Hingis was born in Kosice, in what is now Slovakia, and later became a Swiss citizen.

She has won 40 singles titles and 36 doubles titles, including nine at Grand Slam tournaments, and has earned more than $18 million.

In 2001, Hingis filed a $40 million lawsuit against Italian sportswear manufacturer Sergio Tacchini, with whom she had a five-year sponsorship deal, saying her shoes were defective. Sergio Tacchini said the claims were made only so Hingis could avoid paying damages for breaching her contract with the company.

The New York State Supreme Court dismissed the suit in September because there is similar litigation pending in Milan, Italy.

It seems to me that a lot of players supplement their income by playing doubles, unless they are terrific doubles players. They like to play the bigger events and give fans a thrill as well as practice for Davis Cup, as well as work on their own games. Roger & Michel team up for home tournaments sometimes (like Gstaad last year), and didn't Guga & Sa play doubs at the Brasilian Open?

At any rate, its hard to make a living just playing doubles (especially since they just cut the prize money AGAIN), so that's why I think more top players just play singles -- more lucrative :)

Here's an article about Aussie Open doubs teams:

Double the appeal for fans
Wednesday, 15 January, 2003
by Ashley Browne

The Australian Open's decision to delay the entries for the men's doubles competition until the end of the first round of the singles appears to have paid dividends, with a few more highly-ranked players nominating for the competition, which began on Wednesday.

Tournament organisers changed the entry rule for the doubles so that players could use the higher of their singles or doubles ranking to gain direct entry.

The idea behind this was to encourage first-round losers to remain in Melbourne to experience what the tournament called "the hospitality of the Australian Open."

And many of them have.

The doubles draw still features many of the usual players who haven't seriously challenged the men's singles top 100 for many years.

But there are a few names who will attract crowds to the outside courts over the next few days. Alex Corretja will partner Albert Costa in one high-profile pairing, while other well known players in the doubles include Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian, Carlos Moya, Younes El Aynaoui, Jeff Blake, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Roger Federer, Nicolas Lappenti and Mikhail Youzny.

The most notable result of the first day of the men's doubles was the elimination of the fourth-seeded pair Josh Eagle and Mahesh Bhupathi by Czech players Tomas Cibulek and David Skoch 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Well, I emailed and inquired at Sports Resources and they are going to tell me after the Open which makes they will have. I can't believe they won't have this one since it was a huge upset.

Know what else was a huge upset? Mario Ancic defeated (16) Sjeng Schalken 6-3, 1-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4! :bounce::bounce: I'm very pleased :) Apparently he was scheduled to play Chennai but had to pull out because of a viral infection, so these are the first matches he's played all year!

I, too, was worried about this matchup -- last week, when it was scheduled as a first round  But as everyone's been saying, Juanqui's draw has become mighty interesting:

3RD ROUND MATCHES:

Mardy Fish
Wayne Ferreira

Sargis Sargsian
Mark Philippoussis

Mario Ancic
Peter Luczak

Fabrice Santoro
Juan Carlos Ferrero

I don't want to jinx him, but I definitely like his chances especially if he keeps playing the way he's been playing. The fouth round matchup between him & Ancic would also be very interesting, and a quarterfinal with Scud is next on my worry list -- but if I can get through all that, I think he can break Agassihole's wheels :D

What do you think Jarkko's chances are? They've never played before and I've never really paid attention to Coria. A matchup with Agassihole in the quarters is my secret dream :D Although if Sebby or Escude would take him out before then that'd be good, too.

Last year Jarkko lost in the first round to Pete Sampras, so already there are mountains of improvement :) He still has those midmatch lapses  but looks to be getting over them easier and easier.

I hope he does well in all the Slams this year :) He got to the third round at RG, the second at Wimbly and lost in the first round at the US Open (Jim Courier picked him as a player to watch last year! ), and I think he can do much better than that -- he already is ;)

Please help us cheer for ROGI tonight!!

You have to be very patient with the netcam. What I do is go to the website and click on "netcam", then go to whatever court so I have nine pictures to look at instead of just one. :) That's how I managed to capture from 3 matches yesterday. Just keep hitting refresh on both your browser and the page itself and sometimes you'll get some choice ones :)

That match of AA vs. Lee [the commentators were ooing and ahing about that win:rolleyes: ] -- was absolute CRAP! Sorry, but Lee choked so badly it was embarrassing... and oh so boring!!

Are they showing Serena, Pandy and Blake tonight??? I don't know which one we'll get... btw how is Serena's knee???

I'm rooting for KIMMIE to win the tourney... as for the men... well, too early to tell but I have my faves...

Hi, RF! :wavey: It's good to have you back. LOL, how could you tell I was happy about Jarkko's win? ;)

 at the coverage. I'm just glad (most of) the commentary isn't the usual drek. New faces, new voices, new opinions to shake up the established PMac norm :D

I'm also rooting for Kimeke :bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce: She's up after Gugs tonight :) And of course my faves as well . . . I have actually made my team roster for the Open and am looking to see who wins tonight to finalize it.

Btw, I didn't see one second of ROGI -- not even a match point! Another reason to COMPLAIN LOUDLY and VOCIFEROUSLY!!!!

Tell me about it! I don't know why I would think there'll Scud and Thai on this morning's coverage. Nada, even it's supposed to be a great match. Instead, there's Venus and Justine handling out Bagels. Surprised that they showed Moya's last set  . Of course, if Fish didn't upset him, that footage will never make it to the coverage (hence I fastforward it cos still can't bear to watch Moya lost, how many Slams matches he lost at night, maybe he should demand to play all slams match during day time). Then, even more surprised, they replayed yesterday's coverage of Lindsey's 3rd set :fiery:  . I mean, I already had that taped last nite, why do they think it's necessary to re-boardcast that while not showing interesting matches like...whatever!

:fiery: :fiery: :fiery: sick of ESPN.

yeah, me too. b/c Gagassi won so easily, ESPN even had some time to cover the Lindsay match. i was especially impressed b/c ESPN's coverage was supposed to stop at 1 am but the first set of the Lindsay match had just ended at that time. instead of cutting the match short as ESON does so often, they finished covering it for the last two sets. so i got to see Davenport move on to the 3rd round :) , although it was far from easy..

L. DAVENPORT/I. Tulyaganova
6-7, 6-5, 7-5

THE MODERATOR: First question for Lindsay, please.
Q. You looked like you were having a lot of difficulty seeing to serve. Was that correct?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Nope, it's not (laughing). No, I've been having difficulty just serving, period.
But, no, there was no sun. It wasn't my sight. Wish I could say it was.

Q. I was looking, I couldn't see the ball at all.
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: The one side was a little tricky but it wasn't a factor at all.
Q. So what was?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, I think, you know, she hits the ball very hard and serves well. She's definitely a good player. I had a lot of opportunities to capitalize on the match and not let it get that close. Unfortunately, I just wasn't really able to do that.
I had lots of set points in the first set, was up 5-3. In the third I probably should have -- I was down a break but then I should have broken again a little earlier than I did.
Sometimes you're definitely lucky to still be in the tournament when you feel you don't play your best and you pull out a close match. I'm very happy to still be around. Some of the other players are not. Hopefully it helps me play better later on in the tournament or even in the next round.
I'll just look to get better and better from it.

Q. When you miss points like that and you get frustrated, do you almost make life harder and harder for yourself?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I was frustrated with the way I was hitting the ball and the way I wasn't really able to penetrate the court. I mean a lot of it had to do with herself but a lot of that had to do with me.
And, you know, I feel like a lot of the problems I was having were from either poor serving or starting off the rally on the wrong foot. I probably didn't help myself out too much today.

Q. How would you explain the fact that a lot of top female players have trouble winning their first round matches here?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: We always get the rap that the women win too easily, so now we've had a lot of close matches with a lot of the players. I think that it -- you know, it's a long year for everybody, I mean, especially a top player from last year that plays a lot of matches and plays in through November. Then you've got to turn around and be back in shape, still rest and be ready to go.
I mean, I'm highly in favor of pushing this tournament back at least a couple weeks, but, you know, everyone has to come out here ready to play. I think that the level of women's tennis has gone up and there's a little bit more depth. You know, sometimes we're lucky to get through and sometimes we don't.

Q. Are you able to give yourself the luxury of actually doing nothing in your off time and just relaxing?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I try to. I mean I didn't start practicing again until, you know, about the 9th or 10th of December, which was like a month off. But, again, that whole time you're trying to work out and stuff.
But I think all the players would benefit, even the men, I mean the men play a lot later than we do with Davis Cup and their Masters are a little bit later. But you've got to try and schedule -- everything is about scheduling. You've got to become good at that.

Q. You looked pretty weary at the end there. Were you pretty weary?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I was getting, for sure, tired. I mean, I think it was long sets, long points. And more than anything, I just wanted to just kind of finish it off, just seemed like to be going for ever and ever.
But, you know, lasted a few -- or, you know, couple long matches the week before. I'm happy to still be able to come out the winner in a long match again.

Q. Even though it was a tough match, it must be good to have been out there compared to last year, for instance?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah, try and think of that side of it later. Fortunately, that didn't hit me for the two hours I was on court. No, it was. The crowd were really great to me out there. Yeah, I mean this time last year were some of the hardest weeks of my life, just trying to learn to walk on crutches, being in a hospital. I'm very happy to be able to be here, competing, be able to get through a match that was very, very difficult to get through.

Q. They expect 38 degrees on Friday. The heat policy might work. What do you think about that?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Which part of the heat policy?

Q. Are you in favor of stopping the games?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, from what I've understood, they're not going to put a match out there if it hits a certain degree, but they're not going to stop a match. I don't know, that was my interpretation of the rule as it was explained to me Monday.
It definitely can get dangerous out there when the heat gets too hot. But, you know, we've just got to deal with it as best we can. You know, on Monday it was supposed to get 37. I don't think it ever quite got that hot. We'll have to get prepared again for another hot day Friday.

Q. Can you give me a definition of the law?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: The definition, I think the humidity and heat both have to be above a certain degree or percentage. If it was 100 degrees Fahrenheit but not humid at all, I think we stay out there. I think it really has to do with the difference with the humidity and the temperature combined.

Q. You understand the calculation of it?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Vaguely. I mean, I know they'll tell me if I'm not supposed to go out there. That's all I need to know.

Q. Did you watch the final last year? Did you think that was over the top for conditions?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It's so hard to tell when you're watching on TV, you know. It definitely looked hot. I exactly turned the match on at 6-3, 5-4. It's just bizarre. The timing in California, I think that was around 7:45. You know, was just definitely amazed by the turn of events that happened.
But, you know, very few times in my entire career have ever seen Martina really bending over and gasping and let alone Jennifer, she was winning. It looked like it was really difficult conditions to play in. Certainly once it gets above a certain temperature, it's not comfortable anymore.

Q. Fourth round, you're bound to meet Justine Henin. You played her in Sydney. How do you compare the two Belgian players?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, I think that they're very, very different. I think people have always talked about Justine maybe being a little bit more talented because she has such a beautiful backhand. But there's no question this last year Kim's kind of overtaken her in how she's improved, her results, her consistency. She was really the one that's taken the step forward.
I'm sure Justine's, you know, been practicing really hard to try and keep up with her. But Kim has been quite remarkable in how she has - I've said this before - gotten over the hump of being a 5 to 7 player to make it into the next echelon of women's tennis, and that's very hard to do.

Q. Do you think she is the main challenge to the Williams sisters?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I think she's a big one. I don't, like, rate people on if they're the biggest one or second biggest one. But she's definitely one of the top players right now and always has a good chance to win tournaments, when you're that consistent.
Q. Just before the third set, I don't know if it was my imagination, but you just seemed to be flexing your leg a little bit.
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Not hurt. My legs were just hurt. They weren't tired; they were just kind of getting tight and so I was trying to stretch them on changeovers and trying to stretch them when I was trying to return. She was hitting a lot of good shots and some of the points, you know, just trying to get balls back. It was just a long, kind of tiring match.

Q. What are your thoughts on the EPO tests?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I'm definitely in favor for it. I think any world-class sport, any Olympic sport, any sport that wants to be respected has to keep up with the drug testing policies of the world.

Q. Do you think that what's in place at the moment is sufficient? Do you think they're on top of any drug problem?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, I think that they're trying to get better. That's really all you can ask for. I know that in the past our drug testing policy and system hasn't been up to speed with other international sports. I know that they're trying very hard, I was tested out of competition, and I think it was late November. And I know that they're trying to do that more. A little bit of it is a budget issue. I know they're trying to allocate more and more and more money, especially for the women. Now that they're trying to do blood testing, which might be a little scary, but I think overall we have to move in that direction.

Q. Do you have suspicions that some players are taking drugs?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: You know, I'm a little naive on all that. I wouldn't know how to get them or how players would actually do them.
But, you know, it seems to me that in other sports it happens. I mean, I could not tell you if it happens in tennis. I would not know. But I certainly don't think you could rule it out, that everyone, you know, just hits the ball.

Q. Do you plan on playing a lot of doubles this year?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I think I'm going to -- I'm playing doubles as of right now. I thought that this year, you know, was going to be a little bit of a different year. I thought playing with Lisa, who's my best friend on the tour, and who I get along with well, could bring a few more happy moments in the women's tour and get me to enjoy playing again. There's not a lot of people I would enjoy going out there and playing a lot of doubles matches with. It came up that she needed a partner, and that sounded good to me.

Q. When you were tested in November, did they show up at your house?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: They just showed up. I was not at that moment at my house, but then they got a hold of me on my cell phone and told me to get back in the hour, if I could, and I did. I was happy to do it. I have no idea if other players were, if they've let them in or whatever.
But, you know, I was always very critical when I was out for six or seven months -- actually, whatever, eight months, that I wasn't tested. So then, they knock on my door in November, and I had to do it. I think it's good.

:)

It's over for Hingis?

Former world number one Martina Hingis says she may never play professional tennis again. The 22-year-old decided to take a break from the game in October because of a lingering foot injury and disappointing results since she returned to competitive action last August.

She was expected to participate in the Australian Open but raised doubts about her future in the sport when she withdrew from the event in December.

"It is totally possible that I won't play top tennis again, because my feet will not allow it," Hingis was quoted as saying in the Blick newspaper.

While the top players battle it out at the Australian Open, Hingis says she is happy to take it easy at home, improving her English, and her desire to compete again is waning by the day.

She said she enjoyed the lack of stress and competitive drive in her life and did not miss playing at the first grand slam of the season in Melbourne, which she won in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

"I'm having fun being able to watch the others, how they are running around in the heat on court. When I wake up I always look for the results on teletext. I'm also following the tournament in the papers and watch it on tv every now and then," she said

"I'm not bored. I've spent the last two months doing lots of sport - skiing, riding, long walks in the wood with my dog.

"And I'm now going to school - I'm trying to perfect my English. And also finally I now have more time for my private life."

Hingis, who dominated the women's game in the late 1990s, had surgery on her ankle last May when two ligaments were replaced and never recovered her best form.

Her tactical game has also been rendered obsolete by the powerful Williams sisters.

"Health-wise I cannot complain and my foot, feet are okay if I don't force it when I'm playing tennis.

"But as soon as I try to train competitively, the pain starts."

No longer world number one -- that is Serena Williams -- Hingis is now number two in Switzerland behind Patty Schnyder.

"It was never my goal to be number one in Switzerland, I wanted to be world number one. And I was for four years.

"I have survived no longer being world number one and I will survive being Swiss number one no longer. And I just don't want to think about a comeback."

LMAO! But when I saw him in Queens I think, or some other grass tournament, he was pretty good. He's one of the very few likable Americans as far as I'm concerned. I felt sorry for him that day he got bagelled more than anything. He'd have to do something far worse to lose my respect.

yeah, Lindsay is always respectful to her opponents. i just hope she is not becoming intimidated by Kimmy like she is by the sisters - b/c the Belgian has beaten her the past 3 out of 4 times they played and Davenport used to dominate their H2H. anyway, i loved Linzi's comments about the EPO testing. i agree with her that it is neccessary to test for drugs on tour and it should be done more often.

Leo, you've seen the light!! Gonzo, Potatoman and Srichaphan are all on my short list of least faves :D;)

Ginepri is too closely tied to the "second group" of Americans as far as I'm concerned. You've got Andy & James, who are consistently competing at the top level rather early in their careers, and then you have Fish, Dent, and Ginepri, none of whom I think will make their mark or climb very high in the rankings. Although Fish finally seems to have put something together

Maybe because you haven't seen him for a while. ;) He annoys the hell out of me with his horrible game (I mean Gonzo).

Except for Lleyton :D those are my candidates too. But if I wrote that in GM in the least favorite thread, I'd be bombarded with "how can you not like Paradorn. He's such a great guy and he..."

Oh and add Canas to that least. I quite like Coria, I'm glad he won that match. I bought him for the year in my prediction game. :) But I hope he loses to Jarkko. ;)

Yeah, I didn't expect too much from his tennis. It's not like I'm an avid fan or anything. ;) He's not on my favorites list and it's a long list. I was just saying that he seems to be the most likable of the other Americans (read: those who are not James) who are all annoying.

Really? Well that's what I thought last year but I was wrong :o so I hope you're right. I think Potatoman's time at the top is limited, but I don't want to go out and say he's going to lose the top spot. But that could very well happen if he doesn't defend his titles -- including Wimbly.

I don't know about #1, but I definitely think he's going to take a Slam this year. He's certainly off with a bang to challenge for the top spot, but when he does eventually get there I want him to have a Potato-like grip on it to show he's the real deal :D But if he rotates among the Top 3 I don't think I'd be too disappointed.

An interesting point (well, it's interesting to me). I noticed yesterday the different howls of players. Fish's growl when he won an important point was disturbingly vicious. It turned my stomach and curdled my blood. Arrogance at its worst and most malicious. It screamed (not with words of course) "Take this you fuckface!" Lleyton's scream after he survived a tight set was so exhilarating it gave me goosebumps. It was a howl of relief more than victory, of joy more than vindictiveness. In fact there was nothing vicious about it. I like the way he beats his fist against his heart. He IS all heart and I respond to that. I never found his come-ons to be disrespectful, but maybe they were in the past I don't know.

Anyway, he's the number one player so in a way he has a right to pump his chest. There's nothing more annoying than a mediocre, permanently out of top 50 player pumping his chest and exhibiting the attitude of I'm the shit and you're nothing when playing a much better opponent, just because they hit a great shot. You don't have to think your opponent is an idiot and not worthy of playing against you to have a winning attitude. Look at Kimmy. She respects other players yet she has an attitude of a winner.

Well, I don't like him because he used to be an obnoxious bastard on court. That DC final in 2000 and most of 2001 and 2002 he displayed the same behavior. He's gotten better, I agree, but it's very easy to root against him because he's so in your face.

And, let's face it, his fans are rabid and obnoxious, too (well, some of them). As Layla (I think) said, players tend to attract fans with similar dispositions. And you can't tell me that the fans don't bother you. That's why I also don't like Paradorn or (now) Lee, because their fans are so fucking annoying. It makes it that much easier to root against their player, just out of spite.

Of course, being a HUGE Kim fan makes it hard to avoid Potato's presence because up until now, she was better known as his better half than a player in her own right

Interestingly enough, I really like Kim's style of play because she plays like a man. She is very aggressive on court and could look downright mean hitting some of her shots, but she has never been disrespectful on court or off. She and Dani are both very fiesty and it's nice to see them pumping their fists and expressing emotion.

Conversely, I'm attracted to Juan Carlos, James, and to a lesser extent Jarkko because they are both so quiet and nice off court that when they are driven to the point of showing emotion on court you know they're into the match fully and completely :) Michel is a little hothead :D But Hewitt thinking he's the shit and getting recognition for it turns my stomach. Just a personal preference, I guess.

I just felt that the fist pumping and c'mon are directed to himself more than to his opponent. So those never really bothers me. I remembered that in Cincy final, he pumped and yelled at the direction of Moya, and I thought that's a little bit too much. Then I noticed that his mom and dad are sitting right behind Moya (the player box is off centre behind Carlos). So then I realized that he's talking to his parents. Then I don't feel so bad.

His fans, well, on court, they are typical Aussie, the same one that cheers for Pat, so I never have any problem.

But in honesty, I'm a little tired of him in the top. I don't mind him falling to Marat, Juanqui and Rogi at all.

And as for Juanqui, I think the important thing is to get to #1. Then if he reminds in Top 10 after, that's fine with me, just don't do a Kafel :o

Hey, I don't think I'm rabid and obnoxious. :( ;) I was indeed the one who pointed out the similarities between players and their fans, but perhaps I was referring more to the main faves. I have so many faves that I really can't resemble them all, at least not in obvious ways. ;)

But yes, fans bother me a lot sometimes.

As for Lleyton, I haven't seen DC 2000 and most of 2001 so I don't know what he was like then, but if he changed that much then all the more credit to him. It's not easy to change and mature as a person. :) He was very young when he found himself in the spotlight.

Exactly. He always yells in the direction of his family. There's a big difference. Fish on the other hand, screamed straight at Moya if I'm not mistaken, with a very disgusting look on his face. But maybe that's just a matter of preference as well. ;)

*hug* Friends in pain, indeed. Hang in there, doll, Gugs will be back :)

Geez, that Fish. I fastforwarded Moya's match so I didn't see that. Now I don't want to see it at all. I was just wondering if I can like an American player, apparently not this fish:rolleyes: . Probably sounded anti-American again but I found lots of them without gamesmanship. I think in America, they promote the intimidation factor than being a good sports.

I don't know, because in most other sports I usually cheer for Americans. But in tennis, most of them are obnoxious to me. I can't figure it out.

I'm only referring to tennis. Not in general. There's lots of other American athletes that I like in other sports.:)

:) Good, Rogi just broke to go up 4-2 but he has to get his 1st serve % UP!!! [and keep his UEs DOWN!]

Now Guga has to break!

Is it just me or are these matches REALLY SLOW??

Yeah, I taped that Moya/Fish match too... didn't really watch it though... I don't care for that Fish either... sth about him I can't pinpoint... his attitude I guess... and the way PMac goes on about him... yeah right... how did Moya lose anyway?? DAMN I hate it! :p

Thanks all for the cheering! Guga is still not playing very well. His first serve in 4th set is a very disgusting 45%.

From the last 4 games, which all won by Fish, Moya's biggest weapon, FH, basicly gone south.

No, there is no way they will show Guga's match. I was thinking Layla got the live coverage of Guga's match in Eurosport as Diss has in Brazil.

Blake is fine, but his match is over already. Is it supposed to be live? Anyway, I never put up much hope on the coverage so nothing will surprise me.

BTW, Gonzo lost, Leo should be happy. Well done Martin, another spaniard moves on :D .

Congrats to Rogi :bounce::bounce:

Malisse/Nalbandian -- that will be a good matchup! :)

I hope Dissident is feeling better :)

Dani/Meghann are trying to level their match at 5-all, while Justine & Elena Bovina are about to bagel in the second set after being down in the first  Lindsay & Lisa are on their way to double breadsticks, and I hope Nico and Todd whip Ken Doll's ass :D

AND GONZO IS GONE!!!!! :bounce::bounce: Lost it in the fourth set tiebreaker :D
