It hurts my eyes. Then I thought that maybe Roger was too embarrased to play in that shirt and started to make more mistakes. I guess he was too self-conscious in that outfit. ;) Poor Roger. I pity anyone who has to wear that Nike monstrosity. :o

Mmm, I agree exactly. He'd be much better off with James's outfit :D Roger changed his shirt after every set, so it's not like that was all he had to wear. I guess he was hoping against hope that he wouldn't have to change three times :o

Hi, ILR! :wavey:

Yes :) Roger wore yellow in Set 1, white in Set 2, and Ugly Shirt in Set 3. I was watching Kim during the second set of Roger, I think -- or was it Guga? I don't remember :o or else I would've put up another pic in Mrs. B's thread :)

How's everybody today! I'm terrible but too busy to stay to chat. Basically, I have been driving around the city without my driver's licence. Now I have 1/2 hour to finish my ATP manager list and go pick up Vince, etc etc. Hopefully have time to come & cheer for Juanqui & Lindsay and whoever I forget.

Clijsters Poses Big Threat to Williams Sisters :D:D:D

Tue Jan 14,12:18 AM ET

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Fourth seed Kim Clijsters crushed Samantha Reeves of the United States 6-2, 6-1 Tuesday to reach the second round of the Australian Open (news - web sites) and show why she is considered the biggest threat to another all-Williams final.

The Belgian hardly raised a sweat on a sunny Melbourne day as she swept past Reeves in an hour to set up a meeting with Hungarian Petra Mandula.

Clijsters reached the semi-finals of the 2002 Australian Open but this time is looming as the biggest threat to Serena and Venus Williams (news - web sites), the top two seeds, after a brilliant run of form dating back to September last year.

"I've beaten Serena and Venus once before but every time I play against them it's a different match," Clijsters told reporters.

"I don't know how close I am (to beating them again), it's hard to answer that. I'm just trying to get as fit as I can to be able to compete with the top girls."

Clijsters has won four of the past five tournaments she has entered, including the season-ending WTA championships in November where she beat world number one Serena, and last week's Sydney International.

The 19-year-old has won 20 of her last 21 singles matches but has only reached one grand slam final, the 2001 French Open (news - web sites) which she lost to Jennifer Capriati, and has been getting herself fitter to try and go one better this year.

Clijsters spent the Australian summer working out with her boyfriend Lleyton Hewitt to improve her fitness for the first grand slam event of the year and said it was already paying dividends.

"I've been doing a lot of exercises to stabilize my back and my shoulders," she said.

"I've been doing a lot of running and physical training with Lleyton's trainer as well. I've been working out with them and I think it's been paying off."

=========================

The TH Top Two have definitely caught tons of media attention this year  First Juan Carlos as a fave for the Australian Open, and now Kimmy (even more so) the dethroner of the Williams sisters!

I get to see Roland Garros & Wimbledon because they are during my summer vacation, but, irony of ironies, fall semester starts the day of the US Open and spring semester starts the day of the Australian :rolleyes::D So I'm stuck doing scores and hoping my players are on show courts so I can at least see them on the netcam.

LOL, American academic calendars don't recognize sporting events :D But it's better that it starts on the very first day instead of right in the middle or something -- then I could never tear myself away, even from the drek ESPN coverage.

I could watch the coverage (and did watch a few US Open matches and WTA Championship matches) but I'd rather be able to follow the matches I want to follow instead of having to put up with Agassihole/Roddick/Sampras/Serena/Venus. It's hard to be an American who doesn't like American players  except James

Unfortunately I can't. :( They're all part of one project and I promised to do it back in November. Of course those who were supposed to write the original texts are late (I presume, because I never get the texts as early as they say I would get them) and then all the pressure is on me as the last person in the chain. So basically, they can afford to be late and they don't give a shit about what a translator will have to go through because they're too lazy. They said I was gonna get it in increments and now I'm basically gonna get it all at once. Pierce gets early gift
Tuesday, 14 January, 2003
by Kevin Diggerson

Most people spoil themselves with a small present on their birthday. Mary Pierce decided to give herself an early present of a different kind. Pierce, who turns 28 on Wednesday, opened her Australian Open campaign with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 victory over Patricia Wartusch on Show Court Two.

Pierce, who won the 1995 Australian Open title, is on the comeback trail after a series of injuries and appears capable of recapturing the form that took her to both the Australian and French Open during the 1990s.

"I feel like I am playing pretty well, and at the same time I feel like I'm far from where I want to be,"Pierce said of her form and her goals.

"I think what's missing, well what I need, is just to play a lot of matches. I haven't played a lot so I feel like I need matches."
Pierce has seen her ranking drop to No.50 as she battles back from abdominal and back ailments that have hampered her during the past two years. Still among the most talented players on tour, Pierce's hunger and determination to succeed have increased in proportion to her time away from the game.
"Oh definitely,"she said when asked if she has more desire for the game.

"I think a lot more now than I had before my injuries. I think definitely not having played a lot in the last couple of years has just made me really want to play, you know, excited just to be out here competing."

When at her peak, Pierce rose as high as No.3 in the rankings, and was a regular contender for Grand Slam titles. Her combination of power and grace made her a fan favourite throughout the world, but her strongest support seemed to come in Melbourne.

Pierce and the Melbourne Park crowd share a mutual love affair, with Pierce often producing her best at the Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific. Now competing at her 10th Australian Open, Pierce has reached the quarter-finals or better five times, and boasts an impressive 35-9 record at Melbourne Park, providing a range of memorable moments that come flooding back
"I love playing here," Pierce enthused." Just on so many courts, I have so many memories of matches that I've played. This morning I saw some highlights - they were showing the year I won in '95. Just a lot of great memories (here), a lot of great feelings here. I love being here and playing here."

Pierce will face Chanda Rubin in the second-round on Thursday, and no doubt she will be looking to extend her birthday celebrations by adding new successes to her fond memories of the Australian Open.

yeah, he was ranked high last year with Mahesh Bhupathi and also Roger Federer as partners, but he's playing in the AO instead with countryman Vladimir Voltchkov. i don't think Vladimir has played a lot of doubles recently, so his ranking isn't very high, so that causes them to not be seeded. Mirnyi/Voltchkov will definitely be dangerous floaters in the doubles draw. :)

also, Mirnyi could face his ex-partner Bhupathi in the Round of 16 in doubles, assuming both teams get that far. Bhupathi is now playing with Joshua Eagle. didn't they just get to the dubs finals last week in Sydney?

See, *this* is what Michel needs to work on. His game is there, but his mental toughness has gone backward since his breakout year in 2001. He doesn't recover quickly enough when he's down, or when he starts out not quite 100%. We've spent a lot of time talking about Juanqui's mental fortitude, and how he has become -- and worked at becoming -- more resilient and coming back when he knows he's not playing well.

There's no reason why his amazing play from Monday can't be replicated today. It's all about the attitude. I just wish someone would tell him. :(

Zhenya came back in the third, breaking for the first time for 2-0. Michel is on serve in the third, 5-all. He threw his racquet after missing his chance to take the set in Wayne's last game :(

Am I all alone here? :(

Michel is broken again, now down 5-6. I don't think he's going to make it :(

Jarkko is trying his damndest to hold now  Zhenya has come back strong. Jarkko also sometimes has these mid-match lapses, but this is definitely Zhenya right now.

(Sorry, was eating and browsing WTAworld)

I'm sorry TH :(

Hopefully Jarkko can win his match.

 @ Hyung-Taik Lee, he beats Juanqui in Sydney and now he just rolls over and plays dead for Gagassi.

Base on their 1st round performance, I don't expect Lee to win but stick and bagel is a bit surprise. Lee definitely running out of gas here.

I'm still up for rooting for Jarkko, he's back and putting pressure on Zhenya straight away :)

:fiery: That's just what I thought would happen to Mr. Korean. Don't need to give Agassihole that kind of confidence!

Michel, better luck next time.

Go Jarkko Go!

How come the net cam come up with nice close up on Michel and Juanqui. Last night Guga's match, most of the time, they have his back.

Lee -- Guga is too quick for the cam. One of the pics of Michel was half his face, because he bent down to return sere and the cam was half a second too late, LOL.

Jarkko plays another shitty serve game -- midmatch lapse, what did I tell you? :( C'mon JARKKO!!!!!! :bounce::bounce::bounce:

Hrmm... Agassi now has a potential 3R match with Escude.... I should have a sticky beak at their H2H.... in a way it's a bit of a pity Kucera didn't make it through, he's given Andre fits in the past....

Ferrero on track for week two
Wednesday, 15 January, 2003
by Ashley Browne

The Australian Open's no.4 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero has never made it past the fourth round of a Grand Slam with the exception of the French Open, but would appear on track to break that jinx after a second-round thrashing of France's Jean-Rene Lisnard.

Ferrero cruised through 6-0, 6-4, 6-2 against a player who had won through to his first Grand Slam as a direct entrant. And it showed, with the match taking just 89 minutes – the fastest men's match on Rod Laver Arena so far.

Countryman and No.8 seed Albert Costa had a tougher time of it on Vodafone Arena, needing four sets for a 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Australia's Scott Draper. The match appeared set for a fifth set when Draper went up a service break in the fourth set but the 2002 French Open champion, a quarter-finalist here in 1997, dug deep for a solid win. The second set was an epic, with Draper finally prevailing 11 points to nine.

Also advancing was No.12 seed, France's Sebastien Grosjean, who beat Karol Kucera from Slovakia 7-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. The win took Grosjean to a 4-0 record against Kucera.

One seed who did lose on Wednesday was No.27 seed American Jan Michael Gambill, who went down Spain's Felix Mantilla 5-7, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a three-hour, 15 minute slog on Court 18.
