:) Hi Diss, Leo and Hackie!

So is Juanqui playing yet??? Let's get it on, guys! Hey, if I were Juanqui, I'd ask Pat to practise some volleys with me before the AO!!

Something silly for you:

how about 11 reasons to like pandy:
1. cos he's so eloquent "It was humorous out there. I mean, it wasn't ... I mean I don't even know how to explain it,"
2. cos he beat aa in an exo last year
3. cos he has a middle eastern french-speaking coach even tho he's american
4. cos he's not afraid to play in his pjs
5. cos he knows better than to go out with daniela hantuchova
6. cos he didn't quit his day job after Sabrina the Teenage Witch
7. cos he's not afraid to be a goofball in public
8. cos he gets homesick when he's in europe
9. cos he appeals to both girls and guys
10. cos he likes Thai food
11. cos he almost (but not quite) beat RF

[OK I've just been going crazy trying to do MORE work tonight I'm dizzy...]

Since Marat is injured now, some of the press is looking towards Juanqui. I don't know if I want Juanqui going in to AO as one of the faves. .but good luck anyway, Juanqui!! And don't tire yourself out this week!!

here's the snippet of the article:
********

Second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero firmed as the title favourite with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan, whose schedule, which included winning the event in Chennai before flying to Sydney and playing two three-set matches, finally caught up with him.

Ferrero, who takes on German Rainer Schuettler in today's other semi-final, is setting himself up for a successful season this year on hardcourts, which he believes is the key to obtaining the No1 ranking.

"With Marat's retirement today, if I win today, I'm closer to No3," Ferrero said. He said his preparation on rebound ace courts outside Valencia in Spain and his increased motivation due to a knee injury that ruled him out of the Australian season last year had combined to give him the best start to a year in his life.

And maybe, the Spaniard hopes, it will provide him with the groundwork for a win over Hewitt at the Australian Open over the next fortnight.

"He's the No1, he's the favourite," Ferrero said. "[But] if I play good against him, I can win."

Ferrero sigue con su buena racha
>he's continuing his good run!

en una hora y siete minutos
>beat Paradorn in 1h7m!

un Ferrero irresistible, muy concentrado, que sirvió muy bien y que ejecutó con gran precisión sus golpes de derecha y revés.
>an irresistible, very concentrated Ferrero who served v. well and executed his FH and Bh w great precision!

FGirl: thanks for that article!!

Looks like Juanqui is determined to win a slam this year -- he has a game plan and is carrying it out!!! GOOD FOR DON JUANQUI!!

:) Read this

Ferrero the man most likely

Juan Carlos Ferrero is fast emerging as the man most capable of derailing Lleyton Hewitt's Australian Open hopes, advancing to the semifinals with an ominous straight sets win at the adidas International.

With Russian Marat Safin pulling out of the Sydney event because of a shoulder injury and Andre Agassi's form towards the tail end of last year far from convincing, the Spaniard is starting to look the man most likely.

After a slow burn three setter against Australian Jaymon Crabb in the first round, Ferrero then made short work of Russian Mikhail Youzhny.

On Thursday, he sent emerging Thai Paradorn Srichaphan straight back to the shadows with an impressive 6-3 6-1 win to set up a semifinal against German Rainer Schuettler.

Srichaphan, a winner in Chennai last week and No.14 with a bullet on the ATP rankings list, had no answer to Ferrero's back court blitzes on the Rebound Ace surface.

"He's the one to look at," Srichaphan said after the match.

"They were tough conditions here and he handled them really well."

And even the usually circumspect Ferrero said it was the best he had ever felt coming into the start of the tennis year.

"Last year I didn't play because of injury and two years ago I played an exhibition in Kooyong (but) this is the best start of my life," said Ferrero, who lost to Hewitt in five sets at the season-ending Masters Cup in November.

The 22-year-old is 2-3 against Hewitt in career meetings, with both his wins coming on clay.

But Australian Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald has already said this week the pace of Rebound Ace is starting suit Ferrero more and more.

Ferrero will attempt to beat Schuettler for the first time on a hardcourt on Friday, the 38th ranked German holding a surprising 2-1 edge in career meetings.

Schuettler outlasted Mardy Fish 7-6 (7-5) 6-4, the American a little on the sluggish side after last night's three set arm wrestle with Spaniard Carlos Moya.

Qualifier Hyung-Taik Lee had no such problems with fatigue, the Korean getting a walkover when Safin pulled the plug on their match.

WOO HOO! Watch out everyone! Don Juanqui is here! ;)

Thanks for the article and the translation, RF. His match against Misha is 1 hr 11 min, this one is 1h7m, so it's not too much work for him, he won't be too tired, I think.

Thanks Maly for the article. I was thinking that they will say that too, you know, saying Paradorn is tired so JC beat him. I still don't think ppl respect JC much. Granted, Paradorn is probably tired, just like last year in TMS Paris, when JC was tired from 6 tourney's in a roll and got beaten easily by the red hot Srichaphan, nobody came around to make excuses for him though.

Anyway, regardless, I'm happy that his last 2 matches were so impressive, those will make him confident about his game. So is Sydney on Rebound Ace?

All those articles are assuming that Ferrero and Hewitt make it far enough to play each other ;) My thought is that it isn't likely that BOTH will.

I have this twisted little dream that Hewitt will draw Krajicek in round 1, Mark P in round 2, and Escude in round 3.

Thanks for this article, RF. Hmmmm, not sure if it's good either that he's into the spotlight, I prefer him under the radar. I'm so hard to please:rolleyes:. But this is a very good sign. Sounds like that lost in TMC has given him some very strong determination to get to no. 1 this year:) .

Oh, this also answered my Rebound Ace question.

Rainer is no pussy, for sure. He has a 4-2 record against Moya, including last year's 5 sets win in Aussie. In fact, he beat Moya twice last year on hard court. So good luck to Juanqui.

:wavey: Hallo, thread!

Welcome back DP! I was wondering when you'd find your way back here again ;)

ILR, I hope you feel better but getting to stay off from school is a good thing anyway, no?

:eek::eek: Can I believe what I'm reading there, RF? That second article, "The Man Most Likely"? Where did you find that, because I couldn't believe someone was complimenting him for a change :D

I want Juanqui to get through Sydney first, then we'll start worrying about the Aussie Open and Potato-man. I'm thrilled he's feeling as great as he is, it's always nice to know your man is coming into the season feeling the best he ever has. I am looking forward to following his quest for #1.

I'm also hoping for the first-ever TH Double -- Kimmy & Juan Carlos winning the same event :D The Davenport-Hantuchova match was long and hard, it looked like, and with some questionable line calls. Dani played well and there's nothing nonrespectable about losing in a third set tiebreak. Meanwhile Kim had a much easier quarter, and even played two doubles matches yesterday -- so she's in the singles semifinal and the doubles final tonight. Looks like her work with Potato man to get used to the Aussie heat has been doing good :D:D

Enjoy your red packets while you still can. I am one of those that are caught in the middle, i.e. I need to give money to my mom for the New Year and also give red packets to all nieces, nephews and my son. It's a pretty big deal as Chinese New Year come in about a month after Christmas. Nearly need to declare bankruptcy.

Woohoo! :wavey: and good luck with the interview, Vera! :D :bounce:

I actually haven't seen the first movie (Fellowship), only the second, but I was impressed with the whole thing. Only saw the second when my sisters took me to see it while I was at my parents'. Heh, last year I was a bit snotty when the first movie came out, cos I am a huge fan of the book, and I thought, 'good grief, Hollywood messes with yet another classic'.... but IMO I think they've done well overall, given that they have a very real constraint in how long the films can be.... cinematography and soundtrack are fantastic! Also, (said this in one of the Lleyki threads) they can kill Frodo and Sam off in the third movie for all I care, as long as I get to see more Legolas! :p ;) :o

LOL, Lee, I can imagine... my parents usually dread that aspect of CNY.... Dad is one of 13 and Mom is one of 10, so they have plenty of nieces and nephews to dole out money to! :o

I don't really watch them but if a Spanish team, i.e., Real or FCBarca, or if Rogi's FCBasel is on, I might watch a bit. I just threw out a ton of Spanish sports papers that I picked up at the Madrid airport on the way home last October -- had to weed through the futbol stuff for some TMS Madrid stuff!!

Hi Dr. Peedy!

So it's the year of the sheep coming up? Didn't know that :o :o :o (Mom's always telling me how disgraceful it is that I am so out of touch with my roots :p )

Actually, I've only seen the second HP movie, not the first. At the time the first movie came out I didn't think I'd be interested in that sort of stuff. But my sisters took me to the second movie, and... I liked it :o and ... when I got back to Australia, I bought all the books :o :o . The lady at the shop where I got the books looked at me funny and said, 'so, after some light reading, are you?'... I guess I don't look young anymore. :(

I kinda can't remember most of the locations for the Bond film anymore :o But I thought the ice palace bits were cool.

DP, you've just entered your juvenile phase? LOL, I reverted to childhood before I entered uni so it happens to all of us :) And now that you're a certified doctor you're entering a new phase of your life so of course you'd latch onto something that seems childish. It's like we have to reestablish ourselves with a foothold in "childhood" to move on with our lives.

Or maybe it's all a crock of shit. Who knows :D

No, it's not snowing but it's supposed to snow a bit next week. I don't live in the Northeast, which has been getting pounded with snow.

I meant this year's prize for the Masters Cup will probably be an even slicker model (of car). And yes I did imply that Juan Carlos would win the Cup -- who knows at this point?!

Bisexuality is so convenient.

I don't like a lot of chest hair and what not either. I've been told that I actually like "pretty boys" but most of the "star" men that I have liked are hardly pretty. Well - at least I don't consider them pretty.

Well, when it comes to males, I like the 'pretty boys' pretty much exclusively, and am unashamed of that.... if I had a decent nose and got braces when I was younger I could perhaps almost have become one myself. *sigh* Sometimes I think I'd be better off good-looking instead of intelligent.

:) All this soccer/futbol talk!! What about that Spanish player w the long hair from the Basque country?? Any good?? I mean, good-looking?? He's different... what's his name again???

Hi Layla! Good news re: your computer! We're so cut off without them!

Hackie I saw that movie but I rented the video and didn't care too much for it... kinda slow and I don't like J Moore that much even tho she's really popular these days...

What about Ralphie's new one w J Lo??? I might see it for fun and to see if there's any chemistry betw them! He did it to prove he can do romantic comedy cos he's oh so serious!! Even in person...

Now DP, there's a "pretty" boy for you! He is! But he does nothing for me... I'd take Rogi or Juanqui any day! ;)

You guys can call me anything you want..... just making sure you didn't think I was being snobbish and insisting on being addressed as 'Dr'. :p (I can't even do so in real life.... in Australia, university students regardless of level address faculty members by their first names... it's the culture here)

People find 'Dr' sexy? Oooo there's hope for me yet! :p

Maybe that's why, in the letter I got telling me my thesis has been given the OK, there's this stern bit that says: "You will receive information apropos graduation in due course, but you are reminded that until the degree has actually been conferred, the honorific 'Dr' may not be used."

If I can stay off the net long enough to print out the final copy of my thesis to get it hardbound for the library, I am due to graduate in April.... so formally I'll still plain ol' 'Mr' till then.

Though I'm not a fan of the 'shadowstache' (that is, mustache that is almost there, but just barely heh).

Anyhow - I am off to read, eat, and do some stuff that requires the net (my course pages) but sadly is not here.

I think I will come back here tonight to follow the Ferrero match - it isn't as fun doing it on msn with people who don't really care either way ;)

I can't believe it either! Well, technically I haven't seen it yet. I have it on tape, so tomorrow. Yes, we get the ladies at 9:30 in the morning, but I forgot about it and I only caught the last set between Lindsay and Daniela. Yay for Lindsay! :bounce: Sorry about Dani, but they can't both win. :( I really, really want to see a Kimmy-Lindsay final. :) Anyway that set was very exciting. It could have gone either way. Daniela lead in the tie-break but then Lindsay showed tremendous concentration and won 5 straight points after double faulting. I was really proud of her. This is a good indication that her mental approach is getting better. At the end of last year she wouldn't have been able to close that match after she missed a match point at 5-4 and double-faulted in the tie-break. But she carried on with the business at hand and won. So sad that Dani lost on a double fault as well though. :( I felt so sorry for her.

Safin pulls out of Sydney with injury, could miss Aussie Open

January 9, 2003

SYDNEY (Ticker) - A year ago, Marat Safin advanced to the Australian Open final. The Russian star may have to abandon such plans this time.

Safin, the top seed, was forced to withdraw Thursday from the $932,000 adidas International hardcourt tennis event due to tendinitis in his right rotator cuff.

On the women's side, Belgium's Kim Clijsters and Justin Henin-Hardenne rolled into the semifinals.

Safin, the third seed at next week's 2003 Australian Open, planned to travel to Melbourne to receive treatment Friday.

"I need to stop a few days," Safin said. "I have to (not) serve like for three days. So hopefully for the Australian Open, for the beginning, I'll be OK. I'll ask for a late start and try to recover."

Safin pointed to his intense preparations for the first Grand Slam event of 2003 as the reason for his shoulder ailment.

"For (the) last couple of weeks, I practice quite a lot," he said. "It's too much exercise is what they told me - too much, just too tired."

As a result, Korean qualifier Hyung-Taik Lee, who knocked off No. 6 Andy Roddick on Wednesday, reached his second career ATP semifinal. In 2000, Lee advanced to his first championship match, falling to Roddick in Houston.

Lee will face South Africa's Wayne Ferreira, who breezed to a 6-0, 6-4 romp over lucky loser Franco Squillari of Argentina.

Ferreira lost to Squillari at Adelaide last week is in the semifinals for the first time since the 2001 London/Queen's Club.

"I didn't play that well last week when I lost to him," Ferreia said. "To beat him as badly s I did shows me that I've improved drastically over a week. I'm back to the way I want to play. I was a little slow last week in my first match of the year and I didn't serve that well."

Squillari noticed the improvement.

"During the first set Wayne played a perfect match," he said. "In the second set things were more even, but I still wasn't able to beat him. It's been a good preparation for the Australian Open by reaching the quarterfinals here and beating Federer."

Squillari lost in in the last round of qualifying, but entered the draw when Frenchman Fabrice Santoro withdrew. Squillari ousted defending champion and fourth seed Roger Federer in the first round.

The other semifinal will pit second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain and Rainer Schuettler of Germany.

Ferrero humbled No. 7 Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand, 6-3, 6-1, while Schuettler outdueled Mardy Fish of the United States, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

"I was just trying to keep the ball above the net and keep fighting for every point," said Schuettler about dealing with the wind. "I've had a good start to the year the past four or five seasons and I'm pleased that is the case again this year. I'm looking forward to the semifinals tomorrow. I've won two or three rounds every year at the Australian Open and this year I'll try to go further."

Ferrero has picked up where he left off at the end of 2002, when he lost to World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in the final of season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai.

Srichaphan led the ATP by winning 40 matches on hard courts last year and last week captured a title in Chennai, India last week.

In the women's draw, Clijsters rolled over seventh seed Chanda Rubin of the United States, 6-1, 6-2. Henin-Hardenne had a slightly tougher time but reached the final four with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Amanda Coetzer of South Africa.

The Fed Cup teammates will clash in the semifinals. Last year, Clijsters topped Henin-Hardenne in the quarterfinals here.

Russia's Tatiana Panova, who conquered top seed Jennifer Capriati in the second round, is the lone unseeded semifinalist. The 26-year-old Moscow native cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over qualifier Olga Barabanschikova of Belarus.

Panova will meet No. 6 Lindsay Davenport of the United States. Davenport, played just nine WTA events last year after returning from a knee injury, recorded a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) win over fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia. The 26-year-old Davenport reached the finals in four events last season, but has not won since the 2001 Pan Pacific Open.

Davenport By Adrianna Outlaw
01/09/2003

Competing with the dogged determination that would make her pet Rottweiler proud, Lindsay Davenport fought off fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova to earn a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) victory and advance to the semifinals of the adidas International in Sydney today.

"It feels great to be able to come back and win a close one," Davenport said. "I've played a lot of close ones and you win some and you lose some so I've come to the conclusion that it comes down to luck."

The sixth-seeded Davenport overcame a spotty first serve with her powerful groundstrokes. Hantuchova hurt Davenport with some strong returns and by belting her backhand down the line on key points to take the second set. But Davenport’s crisp crosscourt forehand and her concentration in the third-set tiebreaker helped her take a 5-3 tiebreaker lead.

The eighth-ranked Slovak netted a shot to give Davenport a 6-3 lead and double faulted on match point to hand the American a spot in the semis against Tatiana Panova. The Russian, who ousted top-seeded Jennifer Capriati from the tournament in the second round, was a 6-3, 6-2 victor over qualifier Olga Barabanschikova.

Layla you can add lots of weird signs just by using different fonts. For example I used 'wingdings' which produces these signs: qwertyuiopasdfghjkl;zxcvbnm,.

Just type [ font = wingdinds ] insert the text you want [ / font] without gaps. Of course you can use other fonts, not only 'wingdings'

Pat Rafter has officially retired from tennis. The two-time US Open champion made his announcement in an open letter the media today.

The letter reads as follows:

"I know it's been a while coming, but I am announcing my official retirement from professional tennis," Rafter said.

"As you can probably understand, it has been a very difficult decision for me to make, which is why it took me some time to be sure I was making the right decision.

"After taking several months for my arm to recover from stress fracture injuries I sustained in late 2001, I wanted to make sure that besides gaining physical fitness, I still had the motivation to compete.

"If I couldn't commit to giving 100 per cent to the game, then there would be no point in returning. By the end of 2002, the motivation just wasn't there and my decision was made.

"I will have regrets that the Wimbledon and Davis Cup trophies are not in my cupboard, but that's sport, you win some and you lose some.

"However, I feel I can leave the game, satisfied with my achievements, knowing that I gave it my all.

"I loved being a professional player, competing with the world's best and making new friends all over the world. I will certainly miss some aspects of the game in my retirement, but for now, I need to stay home and focus on the new developments in my life.

"I haven't made any decisions about my future yet, and I'm not in any hurry. Now that I've officially retired, I feel like my mind is free to make decisions beyond competing in the tennis arena.

"A big thank you to my tennis fans in Australia and worldwide for their tremendous support and patience as I debated my future.

"I would also like to thank my partner Lara, my family, Newk (John Newcombe), Tennis Australia and the ATP.

"Special thanks though must go to Rochey (Tony Roche), who has been instrumental in my development as a tennis player and played an integral role in any successes that I achieved."

 bye Pat, we will miss you very much. have a nice life as a family man. :)

:( Yeah Leo, I just posted on the Rogi forum... :( Pat surely will be missed -- he was a unique and gifted player with a heart of gold who spoke his mind! I know I'll miss him!! I regret never having had the chance to see this wonderful player live... I hope there's a tribute to him!

More stuff:

Pat Rafter

Rafter is taking a break from tennis

Date of birth: 28/12/1972
Nationality: Australian
Grand slams: US Open 1997, 1998
A player with an illustrious career behind him which was later blighted by injury and eventually ended by premature retirement.

After being plagued with a serious shoulder injury which restricted his serving, Rafter chose to take a break from the tour in 2002.

And that break eventually became permament, with the announcement of his retirement on Thursday.

Rafter's career reached its peak in 1997 and 1998 when he won the US Open in each year and finished second and then fourth in the end-of-season world rankings.

A hugely popular player on the circuit, the Australian has an excellent all-round game.

His serve-volley style was obviously well suited to grass, and he was runner-up at the Wimbledon championships in 2000 and 2001.

Rafter also helped Australia to the Davis Cup final in 1999, although injury ruled him out of the final.

The following year, as Australia returned to the final, Rafter retired with cramp in the second rubber as the side lost in Spain.

Australia reached the final once more in 2001, and were overwhelming favourites to give Rafter a winning send-off.

But France spoiled the party in what proved to be his last outing as a professional player.

We'll miss you Pat but you deserve some peace and quiet in your life with your family!
:D

I know they are in big trouble financially and I heard this is what they are planning to do but this is so final.......

I really dare not to think about the other Canadian team like Edmonton and Calgary. I don't think Flames can stay in Calgary very long.

This is so sad. I can't bear to see another team leave . Damn the gov't for not helping. There's only 2 teams that's not in known trouble, the leafs and the habs. Thank God we are doing well now so there's more money going in. But who knows, Sens are top team in the East and their payroll is so low:rolleyes:. And nothing matters

It's difficult to ask gov't for money when the players get millions per seaon. Even a goon get around 500,000. Especially now the economy is not that good. That's one of the reason my family moved to US. With only my hubby working, we don't want to take the chance having him got laid off. Although there's still the chance here, it less likely. Just before and after he left, his Calgary's office laid off almost 20% of staff there.

Well, they've been talking to the gov't to share the revenue generated by the NHL lotto game. I think that's fair. Now, the gov't pocketed the 300 million each year lotto revenue from the NHL game. True that the players make millions, but there's a market out there, competing with the Americans. So it's not like they can cut their salary. The Sens is just likely to move to the States now.

And I just can't imagine what would happen without a hockey team in town. I mean, Vancouverites live and die with the hockey team, can't image what it will do to the moral of the ppl in the city if our hockey team leave. True that we'll get used to it if it leaves. But then, Hockey is a canadian game, worth saving in any case. I also thinks there's a financial impact with hockey leaving town.

I wonder even with government help, the hockey teams can still survive in Canada. Well, I don't think I have to worry about Leafs and Habs, they are sort of untouchables and the government will be much more willing to help if those teams need it.

Anyway, I think one of the major reason Canadian cities have difficulties in competing is average Canadian was taxed too deep especially middle class who is the target costumer for hockey.

Kim and Dani definitely have a very good draw. Lindsay has a pretty tough draw, she has to pass Justine and J Cap into order to get out of her quarter. Even she can do so, it may be too much when she meet Venus.

Ferrero, Davenport Through to Sydney Finals
36 minutes ago
By Julian Linden

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Juan Carlos Ferrero recovered from losing the first to beat Rainer Schuettler and reach the men's final at the Sydney International Friday while Lindsay Davenport (news) booked her place in the women's final by beating Tatiana Panova after a long rain delay,
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ferrero is the last remaining seed in the men's draw and showed why he was the favorite to win with a polished display.

The Spanish world number four even abandoned his traditional baseline game to approach the net and show off his volleying skills, which he said he's practicing to boost his chances of winning the Australian Open (news - web sites).

"I'm trying to be more aggressive on hard courts, going to the net more to close out the points," Ferrero said.

"I'm trying, I'm working on it, and I think today I did it well."

:p Remember what AA said?

Read this:

"I'm here to win," he said after arriving in Australia for a run at a fourth crown at Melbourne Park to go with those he claimed in 1995, 2000 and 2001. "I'm here giving myself an opportunity to win - but there's a lot of tennis before that happens."

Trouble for Lindsay? Kimmy's been mixing it up, apparently

Clijsters hammers Henin

A change of tactics and an impressive power game were the difference as Kim Clijsters easily disposed of her Belgian team-mate Justin Henin-Hardenne 6-2 6-3 on Friday to reach her first Sydney final. The Williams sisters can take notice as Clijsters seems to be picking up where she left off at the end of last season.

Clijsters, who won the season-ending WTA Championships, caught Hénin off guard by foregoing her usual baseline game and attacking the net.

Practice with boyfriend Lleyton Hewitt also appears to have paid off as the second-seeded Clijsters displayed superior power. Although the second set proved a tighter affair than the scoreline showed, third-seeded Henin came unraveled with several key unforced errors.

The Limburgher now leads in head-to-head encounters with French-speaking Henin by 6 matches to 4.

Clijsters now plays Lindsay Davenport in the final. The American beat Tatiana Panova 6-3 7-5 to reach her eighth Sydney final after their match was interrupted for more than an hour by a passing thunderstorm.

Like Clijsters, Davenport seems to be gaining momentum. The American, who has not won a title since 2001 after injuries forced her to miss most of last season, seemed stronger than in the quarter-finals when she disposed of Daniela Hantuchova.
