(Kim) I’m never going to say never because the taxes in Belgium are just ridiculous at the moment – I’m paying, I think, over sixty per cent. Belgium is my home country and although I really feel comfortable being here in Australia and I love the country, it’s still my home and I still enjoy being in Belgium and enjoy seeing my family and all the fans. For the moment, that’s definitely not the case.

damn, with those ridiculously high taxes i would leave Belgium and become an Australian citizen too! but i hope Kim decides to stay with her home nation, and not become an Aussie just b/c of Lleyton. and lol @ this interview. most of the questions were for Kimmy and Xavier barely got to talk!

:) Hi Lee and Leo!

I missed ILR today.

Speaking of Juanqui's official site, etc. [terra], here's a quick match report from TMC Shanghai02 vs. Rogi:

Juanqui more or less said:

If I had played just a little better I could have won.
The differences were minimal between Juanqui and Rogi.
If he could have improved a little bit in the game he could have had the match.

If I had played just a little better I wouldn't have faulted so much and I could have taken the match. I was surprised that I couldn't read his second serve and was hoping to do so throughout the whole match. I didn't do well today as I had done in the days before; in practice, everything was working perfectly.

He played very well, very complete in every sense, I think I faulted a little more in the first set and then I was in a hurry to break and I didn't know how to take advantage of the two opportunities that I had and in the end it got away from me.

… The good thing is that you can lose as I did today and still qualify for the semis as I did last year in Sydney.

On Wednesday I'll practice a little more and I'll get more used to the court and then on Thursday I'll go for it.

Also:

Juanqui says:

"A mi en particular me gusta mucho jugar en pista rápida. Los espaņoles han ganado indoors, el Masters en cubierto y en general se puede decir que también sabemos jugar en esas pistas."

>I really like playing on a fast surface. Spanish players have won on indoor courts, the Masters on covered indoor courts and in general you can say that we also know how to play on these courts.

You tell 'em, Juanqui!! ;)

Too bad the site is not updated that often!

I just finished watching the Novak match where Cliffy made the bet :D and PattyMac was trying to convince himself that Juan Carlos could never do well on hard courts. "He's not enough like Hewitt" he keeps saying. And Cliff was just like, "Yeah, keep telling yourself that, that you made a bet you couldn't win". I was totally, "GO CLIFFY!!" on that :D

Of course, if Juan Carlos doesn't win a non-clay Masters Series (the terms of the bet) PMac's just going to have more ammo to torture Cliffy. But we might get to see more of his matches as one tries to prove the other wrong . . . I guess we win either way :D:D:D

Yes, it is possible. I was hoping that Auckland would give him a wildcard since he is a defending semifinalist, but the news from there has been so muddled and confusing I've given up. I don't think he'll get a wildcard into Sydney, since the field is so strong already.

Guess I'll have to wait until the main draw comes out to find out for sure.

Well, I'm not watching one at the moment. That and the final are the only matches I have left, and I'm not sure if I can stomach the final. I remember all too vividly doing live scores for both of these matches and having totally different feelings about the outcomes. Ferrero-Moya was a good match, I agree, and I went to bed happy. But the final . . . at least I don't have the last set. I'd probably cry if I did

Blake upsets Hewitt to win Hopman Cup for United States
11 minutes ago

PERTH, Australia - James Blake upset Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 6-4 and Serena Williams (news - web sites) beat Alicia Molik 6-2, 6-3 Saturday to give the United States its second Hopman Cup team tennis title.

The victories gave the Americans a winning 2-0 lead over Australia with a mixed doubles match to follow. The United States were losing finalists the past two years.

It was Blake's first win in five matches against Hewitt and came in just 64 minutes.

Molik, ranked No. 94, had not dropped a set in the mixed teams event heading into the opening singles Saturday, but world top-ranked Williams was an easy winner.

You know, I was thinking about this last night as I was watching Juan Carlos's & Roger's Masters Cup match. And I've come to the conclusion that no matter what Juan Carlos does, he will be looked down upon.

If he ever wins the Australian Open/US Open/Masters Cup, it will either be called a fluke or blamed on the medium-to-slow surface. If he ever reaches #1 he will be called a fluke, no matter how long he holds onto it. Look at the fact that Corretja and Moya have either won the year-ending championships or reached #1, and they are STILL called clay court specialists.

If he ever wins Wimbledon I think the entire commentating community will have a fucking cow :D And it would automatically be blamed on a weakened draw or a fluke of luck.

The only way that I could see he would ever get respect as something other than a "clay court specialist" is if he managed to stranglehold the #1 spot for more than 2 years and/or defend a non-clay Grand Slam. Only if he was the biggest thing in your face a la Potato man this year would he get respect for his abilities.

Or perhaps if he totally decimated the US Davis Cup team (on whatever surface) more or less by himself. Which he could very well do this year :D

I am still trying to figure out who started dictating the "black socks look cool" campaign. UGH!

LOL!! Down with Ken!!

I don't know who did it, but it's spread. Especially bad is black socks with black shoes, and several of our faves have been guilty of that :o During a US Open rain delay, they actually did a piece on USA about the good, the bad, and the ugly vis a vis fashion in the professional game now

First time Iīve seen that:

Guga played Ken in Indian Wells in 2001. He lost. Mr Doll had black socks. It was REALLY pathetic. I thought to myself: alright, they now will see how horrible it looks, even if you dont consider how fucking hot your feet get on that killing sun, and none will EVER look so goofy again...

lol @ fashion talk. Hackie, you think black socks on black shoes is bad? Then, what do you think about black socks and white shoes, it's ridiculously looking IMO. That's one of the reason I dislike JMG. But I also don't like his serve motion, like he lost control of his limps that everything swings around out of control. Also not understand why he needs a two-handed forehand. I mean, he's 6 ft 3 and 200 lbs plus, how much power does he need from both hands.

Anyway, I hope Koubek wins it tomorrow, that's all :D.

Tennis-Blake, Williams Take U.S. to Hopman Cup Victory
41 minutes ago

By Ossian Shine

PERTH, Australia (Reuters) - A ferocious James Blake thrashed world number one Lleyton Hewitt in sensational style on Saturday to win the Hopman Cup for the United States.

The American, 27 places below Hewitt in the world rankings, obliterated the Australian's defenses in just 64 minutes with searing serves and stunning forehands to triumph 6-3 6-4 at the Burswood Dome.

Women's world number one Serena Williams (news - web sites) had earlier set the U.S. up for victory, blasting Alicia Molik 6-2 6-3 but not even she could have expected Blake to punish Hewitt so ruthlessly.

But against all odds the stylish American produced winner after winner to grind an under-par Hewitt into the ground, his first victory against the Australian in five meetings.

"I was here a few years ago and didn't really feel I belonged I was kind of a substitute I think," he smiled. "Well now I am back, and I really feel I belong," Blake said. The 23-year-old barely missed a shot at the Burswood Dome, firing ground strokes into the corners, onto the lines and running Hewitt ragged in the indoor arena.

Smiling throughout at his form, Blake's demeanor was in stark contrast to that of the sweating, scowling Hewitt who could find no answer to Blake's firepower.

CONFIDENCE KNOCK

The defeat, two days after losing to Jiri Novak in a group match, marks the first time Hewitt has lost two matches in succession since last March and April when he lost in Miami and Monte Carlo.

It will have done little for his confidence a week before the Australian Open (news - web sites) in Melbourne.

The United States had won the mixed team event just once from five finals before Williams and Blake teamed up this year and the pair certainly plan on returning next year.

"I have had so much fun here," Williams said. "I just must come again."

"I'm glad to hear that, Serena," Blake added. "I am going to book my plane right now."

Hewitt and Molik had also been looking to clinch Australia's second triumph.

But Williams dealt the hosts an early blow and brought Molik back to earth with a devastating display first up.

The 21-year-old Molik had enjoyed the best results of her career coming into the final, but was helpless as Williams put the U.S. into a 1-0 lead with ease.

A pair of breaks in both sets were enough as Williams cantered past the home hope without barely breaking sweat.

"It's really great -- it's a wonderful team atmosphere and I have really enjoyed it, really enjoyed partnering James," said Williams after the winners collected checks for A$120,000 ($67,610) each and a pair of diamond-encrusted golden tennis balls.

($1=1.775 Australian Dollar)

Hi all on this oh so snowy day!

Good for James! I hope he inspires Rogi and Juanqui to beat Lleyton this year -- it has to be one of their top goals!! Come on guys you can do it too!! :D

Good morning :wavey:

YEAH! Koubek beat JMG :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:. I admit that I'm not a fan of Koubek (afterall, he did beat Juanqui last year in Toronto). But I'm glad he won bcos it's much better than JMG winning. If Ken Doll wins his first tourney before Aussie, I bet PMac or JMac or someone in the network will hype him up to be a Aussie contender.

The draw is out finally, thanks Leo for posting it. I don't like Juanqui's draw, first round against a floater like Santoro is always dangerous. Then Misha in the 2nd and Srichaphan in the QF, that's so tough . Juanqui can beat them all though, he is in good form himself, just maybe a little rusty from vacation but I'm sure he's training hard during the break.

So good luck Juanqui, start 2003 with a big splash :bounce: . Any of you getting coverage of Sydney?

Ooh, looks like Kimmy will have another great chance to start off the year with a bang. If the Hopman Cup is any indication, she'll be playing well right from the start. I don't think she'll have any problems until the 2RD, if she runs into Mary Pierce. Other than that, she's beaten everyone in her quarter or I have confidence that she can :)

Dani has a tougher quarter, with a meeting with Lindsay lurking. That will be a very good matchup, one that I'd love to see (damn ESPN  ).

Too bad the Russians in the top have to meet each other first round :( I'll root for whoever wins that battle.

Well, I know Juanqui owns Potato's ass on the clay, and I think Roger has beaten him there, too. So its not like they've never had the pleasure of grinding him to mush :D But I hope they can finally defeat him on a hard court!

Well, we got through Doha and I don't think KD is going to win Auckland (just a hunch ;)). PMac would probably be drooling at the prospect of having another American with a title at the beginning of the year, but he's never been that fond of KD for whatever reason. For what I understood, there was a lady in the crowd with a white umbrella. The security was trying to expell her because of that, and Eddie told them she was alright and that she could come closer, and even to the backstages. :D
And then he sang Crazy Mary for her. :)

All right, this might have already passed, but I know some of you guys would get a kick out of this -- from MeFi:

Most requested alt rock songs in the past 13 years (http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/22617)
The best week to listen to the radio this year. For six days, an alternative radio station plays the 2003 most requested songs in their 13-year history.
Listen* to an eclectic, no-repeat marathon of music from acts like:
They Might Be Giants, Radiohead, Pere Ubu, Elvis Costello, Bowie, U2, Bob Mould, Chris Whitley, The Dream Warriors, Guided by Voices, The Ass Ponies, Prince, Social D, Texas, PIL, Royal Crescent Mob, The Specials, Patti Smith, The Pixies, The Pogues,The Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Frank Black, Pete Yorn, Scapegoat Wax, and Weezer.
*Windows Media Format. I've tried the stream on both Mac and Windows. The stream provider asks for email, age, gender, and zip code and plays 2 minutes of commercials at the beginning of the stream, but that's a small price for 150 hours of music. <-- direct c/p from MeFi

Layla, do you work as a translator? Cause I am a freelancer and I always have bad luck when there are any good tennis matches to watch  Somehow I have large and important translations to do when my favourite players are on TV :fiery:

Especially on tennis boards. I feel like people belittle his non-clay achievements or see them as flukes. And some people are just derisive at predictions that Juanqui will end up up in the top three next year. Argh!! I don't understand how you can root against Juanqui (which some people openly do!). He seems like one of the most modest, inoffensive players on the tour. And his fans are lovely too, if I say so myself!;) We don't really fight with anybody and we're definitely not as obnoxious as certain other fans. But then again I am really biased.

:bounce: ooh , I want Juanqui to kick ass so badly this year and shut all of them up! :fiery:

The lack of respect part is true and it applies to all "clay courters". I can understand rooting against somebody, there are a few players I always cheer against (granted not many), but I don't think that's the case with Juanqui. I don't think many people necessarily root against him, they just tend to ignore him. I really don't think Juanqui is the kind of player that draws a lot of hatred from non-fans. It's also true that he has great fans :D and I'm sure that has something to do with his character and demeanor on and off the court as well. Fans often reflect or resemble their fave in some ways (though that might not always be the case).

Anyway, I can understand why many tennis viewers ignore Ferrero. He's a quiet type that doesn't draw much attention to himself. Some people only notice what's screaming in their face I guess.

Hi Zosse! :wavey:

Yes, I'm a free-lance translator at the moment, but I also write silly weekly horoscopes for a living. So when work piles up it really comes in huge heaps. :( I know exactly what you mean. Also, whenever I get one text, I can bet all my money that I will get at least two more at the same time, and then nothing for a long time. I do have one rule though. NO WORK DURING RG!!! I simply won't accept it. Think of it as my holiday if you will. ;) AO is not that important to me to refuse work though. I will stay up some nights, but otherwise I'll just tape the matches and watch them during the day. I don't mind that the matches are during the night, I'm just happy they're showing them at all. :)

Ooops, I missed Buffy talk. :o Vera and Leo, I love Spike and I think him falling in love with Buffy was a great development. I don't think it makes him a loser at all, at least I've never considered him to be a loser. There's nothing loserish about being hopelessly in love with someone. It only proves you are passionate and are not afraid to give your heart away, even if it is immediately broken. The real loser is Buffy for treating him like shit throught, no matter how much he helped her and for acting all disgusted when he reveals his feelings for her. She is the one who is afraid to love again, thereby striking up a relationship with someone like Riley  because it was a safe thing to do.

Spike remains by far the most interesting character in Buffy since Oz is not around anymore and he is the main reason I still enjoy watching Buffy. :)

NO WAY! The Bond character is more like Ken Doll these days! Clive, don't even think about it, let Robbie Williams have it.

Pierce Brosnan is much better in his Remington Steele character than being a Bond. (For ppl don't know what Remington Steele is, this is a TV series that lead those Bond film makers to Brosnan. He was considered as a Bond after Sean Connery but he was tied up by the contract to the series)

And I thought my 8 hour tapes were a find!! I've never seen a longer tape than the ones I use. Most of what's sold in the US are 6-hour.

here's an article:

Davenport Hires a New Coach: Leach
By Lisa Dillman, From Staff and wire reports

Lindsay Davenport and her longtime coach Robert Van't Hof, who guided her to three Grand Slam singles titles and the No. 1 ranking, have parted ways. The move was amicable.

Davenport's new coach is doubles specialist Rick Leach, who also happens to be her future brother-in-law. Leach has been training with Davenport and accompanied her to Australia last week.

"It was a combination of things," Van't Hof said. "She was working with Rick, and I wanted to stay home more."

Davenport is engaged to Jon Leach, Rick's brother.

 i'm in shock

Lindsay Davenport eased into the second round of the Sydney International with a 6-3 6-3 win over Nicole Pratt in Sydney.

The former world number one was playing her first competitive match in nine months after knee surgery.  (WTF are they talking about?)

During her recuperation, Davenport took on former doubles specialist Rick Leach as her coach and become engaged to his brother Jon.

The 26-year-old said: "I was really excited for this year to begin and happy for last year to end.

"I'm in a situation that I haven't been in for many, many years, of not being in the top 10.

"I feel like my ranking can only go up and I can play at a level higher than I did last year." :D

Which is why I get really confused when I actually meet people who fervently hate him. I frequent another board and there are about four people who just root against Juanqui and call him all sorts of obnoxious names. It pisses me off because all I can see that Juanqui has done wrong is beat their favorites sometimes or just perform better than their faves. Grr! Losers! :fiery: It just makes me mad when people simply ignore or write off Juanqui but when people openly celebrate when he loses, it's even worse! :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

too bad about Thomas Johansson withdrawaing from the AO. :( the Aussie Open will be missing its defending champion for two straight years now.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Defending champion Thomas Johansson has withdrawn from the Australian Open because of a knee injury.

He had hoped to recover before the tournament, "but it turned out he needs more time,'' Johansson's agent, Magnus Wistam, told The Associated Press on Saturday.

The season's opening Grand Slam tournament starts Jan. 13 in Melbourne.

The 27-year-old Swede has been plagued by injuries since winning the Australian Open last year. He beat Marat Safin for his first Grand Slam title.

"The knee is better but not well enough that I can train,'' Johansson told the newspaper Expressen. "And if it's not good enough for training then of course I can't play a match.''

Johansson ruled out ending his career anytime soon.

"It takes more than this to make me give up,'' he told the newspaper. "I still feel like playing.''
