funny article from Jon Wertheim:

2003 will be very predictable
by Jon Wertheim, Sports Illustrated
The players thought it was too short and the fans thought it was too long. But tennis' offseason is over, and both tours are back in full swing. Here it is the first days of 2003, and from the Hopman Cup to the Tata Open (a men's tournament, funny enough) the results from a half-dozen different pro events are clogging up the agate section. Before the first Slam is upon us, herewith are 15 tennis-related predictions guaranteed to come to pass (possibly) by year's end.
By the end of 2003 ...

1. The ATP Champions Race winner will be:

A) Lleyton Hewitt.
B) Marat Safin.
C) Juan Carlos Ferrero.
D) Andy Roddick.

2. The top-ranked WTA player will be:

A) Serena Williams.
B) Venus Williams.
C) Jennifer Capriati.
D) Daniela Hantuchova.

3. This player will have won his first major:

A) Andy Roddick.
B) Tommy Haas. :)
C) Juan Carlos Ferrero. :)
D) Phil Mickelson. lol

4. This player will have won her first Slam:

A) Kim Clijsters.
B) Amelie Mauresmo.
C) Daniela Hantuchova.
D) Simonya Popova. lol

5. A retirement ceremony will be held for this former Grand Slam champ:

A) Pete Sampras.
B) Michael Chang.
C) Pat Rafter. (not yet :()
D) Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
E) Thomas Johansson.
F) Goran Ivanisevic.
G) All of the above.

6. This player will retire from the women's tour:

A) Monica Seles.
B) Martina Hingis.
C) Venus Williams.
D) Lindsay Davenport. (i hope not :()

7. This player will become a household name (in households in addition to his/her own):

A) Richard Gasquet.
B) Elena Bovina.
C) Vera Zvonareva.
D) Mikhail Youzhny.
E) All of the above.

8. The Davis Cup winner will be:

A) France.
B) Argentina.
C) Russia, again.
D) United States.

9. Carmela Soprano will be:

A) In Naples with Florio, having divorced Tony and wearied of Meadow, who used to be so winsome and is now indescribably annoying.
B) Using that $40,000 she hoarded to go to Rutgers Law School, with an eye toward prosecuting organized-crime figures.
C) Working in the marketing department of the WTA Tour, trying to get GQ to photograph assorted players posing at The Bing.
D) Reconciled with Tony, having reached the conclusion that willful blindness = gold card.

10. This celebrity couple will announce an engagement:

A) Lleyton Hewitt and Kim Clijsters.
B) Andy Roddick and Mandy Moore.
C) Jelena Dokic and that race-car driver guy.
D) Anna Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias.
E) None of the above.

11. The ATP Tour will have solved its financial woes by:

A) Investing in the high-flying stock that is AOL.
B) Convincing Lleyton Hewitt to forego prize money in exchange for waiving all interview obligations.
C) Slashing prize money while signing lucrative television and rights contracts in Europe and Asia.
D) Figuring out a way to funnel the USTA's budget for truffles toward ATP operating expenses.

12. The WTA Tour will have solved its financial woes by:

A) Exercising those valuable Lucy.com options.
B) Signing Global Crossings as a title sponsor.
C) Negotiating a bridge loan from Richard Williams.
D) Finding support from a range of companies at various levels, none large enough to be a title sponsor.

13. The Tennis Channel will:

A) Still be debating the "perfect launch date."
B) Be syndicating The Damir Dokic Hour worldwide.
C) Supplant The Sopranos in cable ratings with breathtaking coverage of a Jill Craybas-Nadia Petrova Monday-afternoon match from Amelia Island.
D) Bleed money but evince guarded optimism with impressive viewership numbers and production value.

14. Tennis administrators seriously will be considering:

A) Introducing instant replay to review line calls.
B) Merging tours and creating the equivalent of two leagues (a men's and women's) under the same aegis.
C) Enforcing a lifetime ban for players caught using performing-enhancing drugs.
D) Curbing racket technology.

15. Anna Kournikova will:

A) Face the Paula Jones-Jenny McCarthy winner on Celebrity Boxing.
B) Marry Enrique Iglesias on the condition that it fulfills a WTA Tour Aces requirement.
C) Perhaps win an inconsequential tournament but, more important, restore some credibility by making a deep run at a Grand Slam.
D) Quit tennis to write a guide book about luxury hotels in the Twin Cities.

from Eurosport.com:

Clijsters tunes up

Kim Clijsters spent 49 minutes on court honing her powerful yet precision baseline game at the Hopman Cup on Thursday tuning up for her grudge match against world number one Serena Williams.

That she rattled past Uzbek Iroda Tulyaganova 6-3 6-2 in a Group A match was almost incidental as all thoughts were immediately on Friday's much-anticipated clash with the world number one.

Clijsters - a surprise winner over Williams in the final of last year's year-ending WTA Championships - has started the 2003 season in sensational style and says she hopes she may have discovered the "magic formula" to beating Serena and elder sister Venus.

Williams, on the other hand, simply smiles sweetly before putting that November defeat down to fatigue.

But behind all the smiles and the giggling, Serena was clearly stung by the loss in Los Angeles and is determined to set the record straight.

"Oh, it should be fun," she smiled menacingly when asked about the match-up. "I'm just going to have fun, basically."

In the Williams handbook, fun does not include losing and she is it at pains to make it clear that November's slip-up was a mere blip.

"Honestly, I'm just feeling better than I was then. I'm just happy that this is not LA," the 21-year-old said.

"Oh my gosh, it was too much tennis at the end of the year - mentally I was shot and physically I was dead.

"But it's good to see her doing so wellÖ she is such a nice girl."

Clijsters certainly won't be going into Friday's match with a "nice girl" mentality.

"I'm feeling very fit at the moment," she warned, "I'm looking forward to it very much."

When asked if she has found the formula to beating the powerful Williams sisters, the 19-year-old beamed: "I hope so.

"It is just a matter of being a little more consistent than I was at the beginning of last year. I think I am capable of doing it."

So far at the Hopman Cup, Clijsters has been in devastating form. She has lost just six games in two matches having obliterated Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-1 6-0 in her opening match.

Williams, by contrast, has looked a little rusty in the early matches, jeopardising her goal to remain unbeaten all year.

Certainly she will have to dig deep and find her top tennis in the next 24 hours if she is not to fail in her quest just three days into 2003.

BRING IT ON, SERENA! Mwahahahaha :D

Interview transcript -- Kim Clijsters -- 12/30/02

From this humble perspective, you seem to be the one most likely to challenge the Williams sistersí consistent lead. Do you feel a pressure there, or do you get excited by the prospect of perhaps beating them more consistently?

I definitely donít feel any pressure there. I think itís more like a motivation for me. I hope that I can get other players to work harder and to get fitter, knowing that theyíre beatable. I think thatís what helps the other players as well.

Are you looking forward to your confrontation on Thursday?

Yes, Iím looking forward to it very much.

Good luck, congratulations. You were in scintillating form today. I hope it continues.

Thank you.

Ooooh, fiesty words were flying today in Aussieland! :D

this is from Kim's interview after she & X defeated Uzbekistan:

Kim, you played a really solid match. Is the way youíre playing good enough to beat Serena?

(Kim) Every match is different and thatís why she is so good. She can raise her level against the player she is playing. If she plays someone good then she can step her play up a few levels. Especially players like Serena and Venus and Capriati and Davenport Ė they really have that in their game. Itís going to be interesting. If I want to win I have to grab every chance that I get, and if I donít get any chances then that means she is just going to be too good.

Serena is expecting a fun match. Do you think it will be a fun match?

(Kim) Oh yeah. I mean, of course, itís a match and I try to win every match and I go for every point in here. But, you can go into these matches with a little bit different mentality. Of course you try to win, but also if you lose, it doesnít matter. Especially playing against her (Serena Williams) - itís great for me to play against the number one player in the world just before Sydney and then the Australian Open. Itís very good matches for me to get ready for the big tournaments.

If you do get into the finals, youíll be playing three days in a row. Will that be tiring for you?

(Kim) No, I donít think so. Not for me. Once we get into the tournaments we will have to do it as well, and then weíre playing outside and in the heat. Weíre playing a little bit more. Iíve been practising a lot in my week off, so Iím getting used to playing a little bit more and a little bit longer. It doesnít worry me.

Serena was saying about the LA match that she lost that match because she was tired after playing 13 tournaments.

(Kim) I think I was dead after my 25 tournaments. -- MRAW! :D

She didnít seem to give you any credit at all. What are your thoughts on that match?

(Kim) Well, it doesnít really worry me, what she plays. I thought I played a great match and I thought I played good enough to beat her. Of course, itís always easy to say afterwards that she was tired. If she was feeling tired, Iím sure that she could have been because she was playing a little bit more after the US Open playing Tokyo and Leipzig. Itís not that they play that many tournaments. I think that she had about four weeks off or something before LA.

Great news Leo! Hi there! I'm still in the deciding stage. Just asked a bunch of questions so far. I was telling someone I want to see the Corretja d Sampras DC in Houston last year match!! In fact, I want to see Alex's win over Sampras from the Hannover98 ATP Championships Semi too! He beat him when Pete was #1 and won the whole thing over Moya -- got revenge for losing RG98 AND he won the whole tournament his first time there! Pretty damn good I say! Also it was an exciting all-Spanish final on indoor carpet! So there, you nay-sayers!! Actually I want that entire match! I only have about 1h20m of it -- but talk about great tennis!

Transcript - Kim Clijsters
2 January 2003

Well, Kim a different result from when you last played Iroda.

Yeah, I think last time I played her I played in Belgium and I lost in three sets. Different surfaces, of course, but I think I prefer to play on the faster surface against her than on the clay. Sheís a very good player. She hits with a lot of spin and has a very good serve. I was really trying to serve to her forehand, and try to get a shorter ball from this side of the point.

You finished 2002 with an outstanding result Ė the season-ending Championship. How do you feel your form is now after the lay-off and getting back into action?

I was really looking forward to starting training again; itís always nice when you play well to keep going. I didnít really want to stop training, and I didnít really want to stop the season yet. It was also nice to have a bit of rest, of course, and we went on holidays so that was really nice as well. Iím really looking forward to playing, and to playing the Australian Open.

Do you have a specific goal at all in 2003, starting the year at number four?

I really want to stay healthy throughout the whole year. With my shoulder injury last year I didnít get to play the amount of tournaments that I wanted to play. I didnít get to play the tournament in Belgium, in Antwerp, so that was really a bit sad for me because I really wanted to play at home. Now this year I get the chance to do that.

Just finally, this tie is a long way from being decided, but youíve got a massive match tomorrow Ė a rematch Ė with the world number one.

I try not to really think about that yet, we still have a few things to handle here. Of course itís always great to have such a big match in an event like this. With the Australian Open coming up, itís definitely good to have these big matches.

Belgium is still very much a chance to make the final. Off to a great start today. Well done.

Thank you.

Novak's the only one to beat Potato at the Cup thus far.

Hewitt will still be arrogant if Australia wins the Cup (which they may very well if the USA beats Belgium), so it might only serve to make him more fiesty and scrappy.

yeah i just realized it was from yesterday. i thought the transcript was from today b/c it's still January 2nd where i am (for another 15 minutes), but in Oz it's already the 3rd.

i think Kimmy is ready to win a Major.. especially after winning the Sanex Championships. i'm not so sure about Hantuchova though. i think her game still needs to develop if she's gonna become a consistent contender. in about another year, i think Daniela will be beating the Williams sisters and battling for major titles.

And Leo, I heard there's big snow storm about to hit the East tomorrow, must be pretty cold there, eh?

Anyway, got to get back to hockey, 3rd period is about to start. So I'll come back to check the post again later, after my game. If I don't see you later, then you guys have a great night.

Well, I was speaking of Juan Carlos & Kim -- my #1 favorite players ;)

Daniela, I agree, she's not ready for a Slam just yet. She only has 1 singles title under her belt at the moment. But I think she'll be a contender just like she was this year -- quarterfinals at the last 3 Slams; maybe this year she'll make a semi or two. I want her to win more Tier I's this year to show Indian Wells wasn't just a fluke.

There are the naysayers, since the Williams sisters don't play Indian Wells . . . but she has shown her growth as a player since March, I agree.

I hope all of my players have good years this year. Hopefully Michel will get into a tournament next week and get a few more good matches before the Australian. He's the one I'm worried about most at the moment.

Yes! But we are quite used to similar view in the Rockies (except the red rocks) so this is not that spectacular to us. This town is just about an hours drive from the south side of Grand Canyon so if you have to chance to visit again, you may want to spend a day or two there too. The town is called Sedona.

Hi Zosse! :wavey:

Definitely, Layla :)

*whispering some mantras to drive all cold to Slovenia*.

Maybe then some announcer will say: "The organisers would like to thank zosse from Lithuania :D. The event wouln't be possible without her generous input and efforts!" :D

For me it would be nice for a change to walk my dog without freezing nearly to death!

BTW, nice to see somebody else cheering for Koubek who does not have much support on this board ;)

My last fave moves on! LOL Zosse! :D Koubek is such an underappreciated player. ;) Do you think I can convert the whole board if I give it a shot? :p

And thanks for the cold, hehe. :) If the event goes through, you can be sure to get a big thank you through the speakers. ;) You can hear it on Eurosport. I wonder what the commentators will say.

Do you follow any winter sports, such as cross-country skiing or biathlon?

vaiva
01-03-2003, 04:26 PM
That was awesome from Stefan. I am sure he has many more fans (maybe even on this board) but they are probably too shy to cheer for him ;) I think it's good time to start a campaign for him and maybe we will be joined by some others (given the fact that quite many posters are not so much fond of JMG :D)

And yes, I follow cross-country and biathlon whenever I can :) Both men and women :)

Layla
01-03-2003, 04:50 PM
Yeah, I've never been shy about cheering for unpopular players. ;) But you're right. I think he may get some more fans tomorrow, especially if he wins. :D

I love winter sports. My favorites are usually Norwegian for some odd reason. Thomas Alsgaard for instance. He was born just 3 days before me. :D And Frode Estil. And Bente Skari. In Biathlon my main faves were Forsberg and the Poirees. Raphael was so impressive in the last two events. He was sensational really. :) Who are your faves?

vaiva
01-03-2003, 05:04 PM
I've already started the campaign for Stefan but may get kicked really hard by TBE :D Lets see the results ;)

Regarding winter sports - I'm also fond of Norwegians :) both in skiing and biathlon. I like B. Skari and F. Estil as well. I also like K. Smigun - she's from my country's sister - Estonia :)

I supported Forsberg before she retired  now I do not have a clear favourite, but support K. Beer, O. Pyleva and some others. My big big favourites among men are R. Poiree :hearts: (yes he was awesome in these last competitions ;)) and Frode Andresen (for his huge natural talent and unpredictability - just like my fav tennis player Marat Safin :)).

:) Hi Layla and welcome zosse!

It's still snowing -- up to at least 15cm. A winter wonderland. We can go skiing! Better than in Switzerland! I'm trying to find a nice photo for you guys but no luck so far!

So who's in the final of Doha now? Koubek [did he beat El Aynaoui?] and ?? Misha??

Layla
01-03-2003, 05:19 PM
Well, you didn't get kicked but your suggestion was dismissed in favor of football. ;)

I like Smigun too, she's my third fave after Skari and Petra Majdic from Slovenia. I don't have a clear favorite in women's biathlon now either, since both my faves are out of the competition. I like Uschi Disl I suppose, and Zubrilova.

I can't believe I forgot to add :hearts: to Raphael. :p That almost never happens. I really heart him. ;) Yep, I like Frode Andresen too, but I cringe everytime he comes into the shooting range. I prefer Bjoerndalen though, but his style is very similar to Frode's. When he's off, his shooting is dreadful.

An interesting article re: Wimby seeding system

Costa has a point:

Wimbledon unfair to Spaniards: Costa

French Open tennis champion Albert Costa claims Wimbledon is unfair to the Spanish players and reckons it is time the tournament moved into the 21st century.
The 27-year-old is one of several clay surface experts who sometimes give the grass court Grand Slam a miss, and his New Year message to the All-England club is that it is wrong for it to decide the Wimbledon seedings itself.
"Wimbledon should do what the other Grand Slams do and follow the world rankings," he said.
"Sure grass is different, but so is clay and hard courts.
"I feel very disappointed, because we are playing all year to earn a ranking and when we come to Wimbledon we find that our ranking doesn't count - why?" Costa asked.

["Sure the surface is different, but it is also different on clay courts, but at the French Open they don't put Pete Sampras and Tim Henman down in the seedings," Costa said. -- GOOD POINT]

"It's unfair.
"If they are ranked one and three in the world rankings I don't mind if they are seeded one and three in the French Open."
Wimbledon has sought to avoid a wide boycott by Spanish and Latin American players by reducing the extent to which it adjusts the seeds according to their grass court records, and by getting an agreement to raise the total of seeds in Grand Slam events from 16 to 32.
This means that demoted clay-courters like Costa or Alex Corretja are unlikely to appear in the draw as floaters, but Costa still thinks it is unfair not to use the world rankings.
"We should talk," said Costa, an independent-minded Catalan.
"They should understand us. I understand them.
"They have a very good event but still we have now moved into the 21st century, and they should gradually change their view.
"(David) Nalbandian (raised on clay courts in Argentina) did well at Wimbledon (he reached last year's final losing to Lleyton Hewitt) and so can we."

Bovina and Youzhny both lost their semifinal matches. and of course Belgium went down to USA in a fucking supertiebreak. :fiery:  the only good news for me is that Richard Krajicek won (destroyed Vahaly 6-1, 6-3) to reach the Semifinals in Adelaide. this is a great chance for Krajicek to win his 18th career title - and first since 1999. thanks for the article, RF. for once i agree with Costa. Wimbledon needs to change their seeding systems. the Roland Garros committee doesn't seed serve-and-volleyers lower than their entry system rank just b/c the surface doesn't suit them.. i think Wimbledon is unfair in that department.

You know that the AUSOpen have made their courts FASTER to thwart the Spaniards! Rather brazen I'd say! They don't mind proclaiming this fact either. What is it w everyone out there? Some anti-Spanish conspiracy???

All I can say is JUANQUI, just prove them wrong!! I think he can do it this year -- win a GS, that is!! Just VAMOS Juanqui all year!! ;) Moya too! For that matter, why not Safin and Federer, they're good on clay too AND can play on all surfaces, like the Spaniards!

this is also good news since i don't like Canas:

Indian Open
Top seed and defending champion Guillermo Canas suffered disappointment after a straight sets defeat to Slovakia's Karol Kucera in the quarter finals.

Kucera, who had lost to Canas in the semi-finals last year, breezed into the last four after a 6-1 7-5 win.

Kucera broke Canas early in the match and raced into a 4-0 lead before closing out the first set.

Canas fought back from a break down in the closely contested second set before Kucera again regained his composure to win.

German Rainer Schuettler, the sixth seed, was also defeated, losing 6-2 7-5 to little-known Frenchman Jean-Rene Lisnard.

Lisnard will face a tough task in the semi-finals when he plays second seed Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand.

Srichapan continued his recent good form by beating Armenia's Sargis Sargsian 6-4 6-4.

"I'm playing well at the start of the year, which is great," said the 16th-ranked Thai, who reached the final last year.

"I've got another tough in the semi-finals and I just want to go out and do my best."

There were no problems for fourth seed Juan Ignacio Chela who won 6-4 6-3 against German qualifier Tomas Behrend.

good job, Karol! now kick Chela's ass in the semis and Paradorn's in the final so you can win your first title since '99 ;)

Krajicek into last four
Krajicek is a former Wimbledon champion

Friday's ATP round-up

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AAPT Championships

Former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek showed glimpses of his old form to sweep into the semi-finals of the Australian Men's Hardcourt Championship in Adelaide.

The big-serving Dutchman, who has not won a tournament since the 1999 Miami Masters, beat Brian Vahaly 6-1 6-3.

Krajicek is playing in only his seventh event in two years after a series of knee and elbow injuries hampered a career that saw him rise as high as number four in the world rankings.

None of the original eight seeds made it to the semi-finals with the last two, Argentina's Mariano Zabaleta and Spain's Alberto Martin, both bowing out in the quarter-finals.

Fifth-seeded Zabaleta crashed to a 7-6 6-1 loss to Nikolay Davydenko of Russia while Martin, the sixth seed, fell to Belgian qualifier Kristof Vliegen 6-3 6-4.

Krajicek will face Vliegen for a place in the final while Davydenko meets Adrian Voinea after the Romanian defeated Anthony Dupuis of France 7-6 6-4.

I have ALWAYS had a beef with the Wimbly seeding system. It's part of the reason its tied with the US Open as my least-favorite Slam. It's so unfairly based and I wish the official tennis bodies would give it a nice slap in the face, a big boycott. Unfortunately the players unions (ATP & WTA) are too busy screwing the players over to worry about the tournaments and their foul play. :fiery:

You know, I was thinking about this last night as I was watching Juan Carlos's & Roger's Masters Cup match. And I've come to the conclusion that no matter what Juan Carlos does, he will be looked down upon.

If he ever wins the Australian Open/US Open/Masters Cup, it will either be called a fluke or blamed on the medium-to-slow surface. If he ever reaches #1 he will be called a fluke, no matter how long he holds onto it. Look at the fact that Corretja and Moya have either won the year-ending championships or reached #1, and they are STILL called clay court specialists.

If he ever wins Wimbledon I think the entire commentating community will have a fucking cow :D And it would automatically be blamed on a weakened draw or a fluke of luck.

The only way that I could see he would ever get respect as something other than a "clay court specialist" is if he managed to stranglehold the #1 spot for more than 2 years and/or defend a non-clay Grand Slam. Only if he was the biggest thing in your face a la Potato man this year would he get respect for his abilities.

Or perhaps if he totally decimated the US Davis Cup team (on whatever surface) more or less by himself. Which he could very well do this year :D

This is so true. The bias against claycourt specialists won't go away, unless all American players become claycourter, then I think they will shut up. I wonder if the European is as anti-claycourter as here in N.A.? I mean, clay courts pretty much only plays in Europe and S.A., that's why the N.A. are not fond of them?

That, or he spanks Ahole and Roddick in a consistent basis, the PMac (and everyone else) has to admit that he is indeed a great player (unless PMac is willing to say anything bad about his 2 supreme tennis gods, but then he would be damned:eek: ). I think Moya got instant respect since he started spanking Lleyton in Cincy and Agassi in Paris.

1/3/03 -- Interview with Kim Clijsters & Xavier Malisse

Thatís it, has it been a good week?
(Kim) It has been Ė fun. We ended second again. We did last year as well Ė last year we lost to America again too.

At the same point?

(Kim) Yes.

Kim, can you tell us a bit about your singles? You struggled a little bit on your serve and struggled to find your range.

(Kim) Definitely. I think it was a very up and down match, definitely on my side. I think she played pretty consistent, but I think on my side it wasÖ.3-0 down, I didnít have any rhythm at all. Then I got back into the match and had some chances, I think. But I definitely missed a lot of those shorter balls. I worked really hard to get into the advantage situation of the point and then I missed some easy forehands where I should have been able to finish off the point. Especially the game too, that I lost where I got broken. If I would have held there I would have been 5-4 up and it would have been a completely different story. Thatís what makes tennis so interesting.

Are you still happy with your progress?

(Kim) Definitely. I definitely played a lot better this year than last year, I think. I played really good against Ruano Pascual, and Tulyaganova was a bit tougher because I didnít play a match for a few days and there was a long break between my matches. Iím happy with the way Iím feeling and the way Iím moving. Thatís another positive thing to take out of this week.

It was pretty much what we expect from you two Ė a hard-hitting game from the back of the court. Is that what you expect too?

(Kim) Yeah, I think thatís one of my stronger points in my tennis career so far. Of course, itís always nice if you can come in a little bit more, and maybe thatís something that I still need to work on, I think. Thatís why Iím going to start playing doubles a little bit more and that will help my singles game as well. Learn to serve and volley a little bit more in womenís doubles Ė that will definitely help.

Kim, are you actually considering taking up residence in Australia?

(Kim) Iím never going to say never because the taxes in Belgium are just ridiculous at the moment Ė Iím paying, I think, over sixty per cent. Belgium is my home country and although I really feel comfortable being here in Australia and I love the country, itís still my home and I still enjoy being in Belgium and enjoy seeing my family and all the fans. For the moment, thatís definitely not the case.

Xavier, your start of the year is good from what weíve seen here. How do you see your form?

(Xavier) Iím pretty happy. Every match my level went up. Today I played a good match and Iím just looking forward to this year. It will be a tough year, but I think if I can do the same thing as last year and work on a couple of points, then it might be a better year than last year. But, Iíve got to play every match and see how I go.

What would make it better?

(Xavier) You know, work on some things Ė going to the net more, doing different stuff. Work on my serve and stay healthy. If I can do that then it will be a good year.

Kim, every time you play Venus or Serena, more than the other players do you feel thereís something to be learned?

(Kim) Oh definitely. You learn out of every match, but not only the matches against Venus and Serena Ė all the other matches as well. Definitely in the beginning of the Slams when you play the lower ranked players, you learn things that you can take into your next matches. You really need those earlier matches to get through those big matches sometimes.

But to have a bank of options, particularly against the WilliamsíÖas you get to the end of the tournaments, youíve seen how they play. In these situations, do you begin to work out what they do?

(Kim) Oh, definitely you learn out of these types of situations. This tournament here, you can always take things into your next matches. Next time I play her I know I have to serve a lot better than what I did today. I have to put a higher service percentage in. Thatís what my coach and I will be talking about and weíll be referring to this match today.

Do you actively look forward to seeing either Venus or Serena in a part of your draw?

(Kim) Oh yeah, I mean it doesnít bother me. I think itís a challenge to play against them. I always enjoy playing against them. I can get the best out of myself. When you are younger, these are definitely the matches you dream of Ė to play against those top players Ė and especially the number one in the world. But, itís not only Venus and Serena, itís playing against Jennifer (Capriati) and Monica (Seles) and all those girls as well. Those are really the matches you look forward to playing.

I'm excited about having tennis' back and all. But the frustration also begins, since no tennis TV besides big events, and no updated livescores board to follow:mad:. With those countless problems ATP has, this is definitely one of the most important one that would actually turn away fans. Maybe it's time to email my letter of complaint.

TennisHack
01-03-2003, 10:48 PM
It was beyond time to email that letter of complaint, Vera. Did you see the thread Eggy started about prize money? They are really screwing the bulk of their players

Vera
01-03-2003, 11:01 PM
I read that. It's mostly those poor lower rank ppl and double players who's gonna be hurt . Well, I know it's useless, probably fell on deaf ears as they don't seem to care what the fans think. I don't want any decline in tennis interest in US since it would mean less coverage for me in Canada too . And WTF is wrong with those ATP/ITF ppl.

BTW, did you see how much bonus those top players made? Okay, not complaining since I'm happy that JC is the second highest player in the earning list, but he made a double during the TMC week. In fact, I think Tennis players made nothing compared to other pro-sports. I mean, they pay millions to the winner in golf tourney. And those top NHLers and NBAers made 10 or more millions a year for a 5-10 years contract. And only tennis is truely a global sports (along with soccer).

ferrerogrrl
01-03-2003, 11:04 PM
can someone post the bonus list?

ferrerogrrl
01-03-2003, 11:06 PM
is juan carlos' official website www.jcferrero.net or is it the http://www.terra.es/estrellas/ferrero/ addy?

Vera
01-03-2003, 11:10 PM
I don't know if there's a bonus list. I just compare the price money of the week before TMC and after TMC. Hewitt made about 2.2 millions in that week, 1.4M from winning the TMC and the 700K is probably bonus. But don't ask me how they give out bonus, bcos I have no clue, except that you have to participate in all those TMS unless you're injured (since Hewitt didn't play Madrid).

But my point is more about tennis players are not making as much money as other pro sports (especially when I see those mediocrite hockey players making 5 millions a year and they only play 9 months a year if they are lucky enough to be in the playoff, that's also included training camp). Tennis players work 11 months a year and training year round.

www.jcferrero.net is made by his sisters and his father.

http://www.terra.es/estrellas/ferrero/ called itself the official Juanqui site, while fans can chat with him in a regular basis, so I believe that's the official one.
