Hi Leo and Emma :wavey:

Well, I'm here by myself. It's likely that I will miss everyone again today since I won't be here long. I'm gonna bring the kids (my nephew and niece) to eat their favor meal, McDonalds...They have the same taste as Juanqui:D. And then I'll drop them off at my mom so she can babysit. Then I'll go to watch The Two Towers :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

A Canucks game, eh! That's wonderful - who is going with you? You must be thrilled at how they Canucks are doing this year  When I checked a couple days ago they were tied for first in the entire NHL  with rrr 44 or 45 points - but I just checked just now and see they are tied for Detroit with 47 points.

I cheer for Montreal and Toronto, but after those two it goes Canucks, Senators etc etc
Let us know how it goes

How good are your seats?

Thanks Becca:kiss:

I'm much better now, the holiday spirit has healed me :D. And the presents helped too. I'm going to the hockey game with my sister and friends, 5 of us. We have some great seats, in the middle, behind the home team bench, at the front of the upper level. I can't wait, they will be playing against the Ducks.

I like the Habs, and then the Oilers (except when they play against us), then the Leafs (bcos of Pat Quinn). But I support all Canadian teams since they all have to struggle so much to remain in their cities. I mean, when they don't do well in the season, it gives the owners an excuse to sell the team to the South or sth, I hate it when that happens.

Anyway, I'll let you know how the game goes:).

Now, I have to go. So have a great day, everyone :wavey:

i'm not sure what the delay is all about. i'm sure it partly has to do with the holidays, but they also said they were quite unorganized at the moment.

besides those 3 tennis tapes sites you mentioned, i only know of: http://website.lineone.net/~suepooley/index.html but that is only women's matches (mostly Steffi, Martina H, and Anna K). there must be some other sites out there...

Hewitt questions Rusedski

World number one Lleyton Hewitt has described Briton Greg Rusedski's withdrawal from the Davis Cup tie against Australia in February because of a foot injury as "very weird."

"I struggle to see how a guy can pull out and say he is injured and he is playing in Doha on Monday," Hewitt told reporters on Friday.

Rusedski, 29, is set to return to tournament play after foot surgery with the Qatar Open in Doha starting on December 30 and the Australian Open from January 13.

However, he has made himself unavailable for the Davis Cup first round tie against Australia in Sydney from February 7 to 9, fearing his foot will not last out on the clay surface.

But Hewitt said: "It is very weird and I am sure the British people are a little shocked with it all and I am sure the team is very disappointed.

"Potentially it could be a fantastic week of tennis if we have myself and Mark Philippoussis playing against Rusedski and (Tim) Henman.

"When the draw (for the first round) came out, I thought it was the toughest draw you could get."

Rusedski has said he made the decision because he did not want to unsettle the team with a last-minute withdrawal.

Lleyton makes a good point here..

Lleyton makes a good point here..

Well for someone deflect one's country for another because the pasture is greener (i.e. money is more), you cannot expect loyalty. And Davis Cup is more on loving your country and represent her than individual success. I doubt Britain ever has Mr. Rusedski's loyalty.

I just glad he no longer represent himself as a Canadian since he's a disgrace.

Perfectly paced open surface to negate Europe's boring baseliners
By Linda Pearce
December 24 2002

As we brace for the next of the now-regular Australian Open withdrawals, Peter McNamara has attributed the men's injury glut to slower conditions internationally, while claiming the Melbourne Park courts are defying the trend by playing 10 per cent faster this year than last.

McNamara, the former world No7 and current coach of Mark Philippoussis, believes the quicker version of Rebound Ace will suit not only his own charge but also three-time champion Andre Agassi and title favourite Lleyton Hewitt, at the expense of the more grinding baseliners raised on clay.

"The Spaniards will say 'it's not like last year, it's a little quicker', and so it should be. This is much better for Lleyton Hewitt," McNamara said after a practice session with Philippoussis yesterday.

"I mean, who are we looking after here? Carlos Moya or Lleyton Hewitt? Carlos gets looked after enough. But the thing is that it's not too fast, so the ball comes on to the racquet. It's not that you have to generate [all the pace], like last year and the year before when it got a bit slow here.

"The year before that was a bit too fast, and you've got to get a happy medium. I think this is the perfect court speed. The guys that like the ball to come on to the racquet are going to, I would think, do fairly well."

McNamara said the official balls were also superior this year, if not necessarily faster. "They just don't fluff up as much, and they don't go bald like before, either. They're fast enough, they're slow enough for everyone. There's no excuses."

But there is blame. McNamara attributes the trend towards heavier balls and slower courts, particularly in the late-season indoor stretch in Europe, for the problems that have weakened the men's Australian Open field.

"The end-of-year tournaments are played in the slowest possible conditions, and they wonder why these guys are breaking down. You don't have to be a brain surgeon to figure it out: everything's gone slow motion," McNamara said.

"The balls have got bigger and fluff up, and the courts have got slower. It's catering for who - the South Americans, Spaniards? Who else? The guys like Tommy Haas and Tim Henman, who have big serves and can play on all courts, they're the ones that are getting hurt.

"I think we need to be very careful. The season's very long, the points are getting longer, and the courts have slowed down so much in Europe that it's ridiculous. And they wonder why these bodies are fading away."

Pete Sampras is taking an extended break before resuming in February, while others out of or in doubt for the open include Haas, defending champion Thomas Johansson, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Goran Ivanisevic, Arnaud Clement, Wayne Arthurs and Greg Rusedski.

McNamara said the other factor in the high rate of absenteeism was the grand slam's timing, as players needing surgery after the European stretch often had inadequate preparation time for demanding best-of-five sets tennis in the new year.

Philippoussis, who has recovered from his latest minor knee injury, will leave for Chennai on Boxing Day to play his first tournament in three months.

SO... I'd like to know what the Armada et al. has to say about this! :p

Hello! :wavey:

Remember me? :D :D :D I have some good news at last. It seems that my computer problem has been resolved. Im not entirely relieved yet, Im still waiting nervously to see what happens, but Ive taken it for a test drive and it appears to be working. :) I dont want to get overly excited just yet, because my hopes have been crushed before but for the moment, Im blissfully happy. :D

My friend had the flue which is why he didnt show up for so long. I did try to find a solution myself, but I only managed to create a terrible mess. I wont go into too much detail, but I tried MEs special feature (I think it might be recover or restore, Im not sure because my edition is in Slovene), which basically restores the computer to a state at a chosen time while keeping all the recent documents intact, but it all went horribly wrong, which is precisely why I wanted someone else to be there when I do it. :o I wanted to restore it to the way it was a week ago, before it began to freeze. The first attempt was successful but the computer continued to freeze. Then I tried to take it back two weeks and then all hell broke loose. I think the problem occurred when the comp froze when I tried to download something and it apparently lost Nortons virus definitions. Its really my fault because I forgot to turn off the auto-protect option, which scans the computer when it is switched on. When the computer downloaded the state from two weeks ago and went into automatic reboot like its supposed to, there was a message that it couldnt initialise auto-protect and so it refused to run, messing up the process of recovery, then it went into the secure mode. None of the subsequent recoveries (I tried several dates) worked and I couldnt even undo the first recovery, which is also supposed to be an option.

To make a long story short, it took me 5 or 6 nightmarish hours of trying things and freaking out, just to get it back to the way it was before I started the whole thing. I reinstalled Norton and downloaded all the updates. After that I was even more sure that I didnt want to try anything on my own. And its a good thing too, because the reinstallation of my ME windows was riddled with problems too. The program refused to save the backup copy which would enable me to go back to the way it was if anything went wrong, presumably because of the previous mess I mentioned. We all decided to take a huge chance and install the windows anyway, but we were far from certain that the computer would be able to finalize the installation. Luckily, it did! :D I didnt even have to lose any programs and files. :) In fact, a really bizarre thing happened. I gained 2 GB of free space!!!

Anyway, hopefully it will hold up. Oh and I also switched off my MSN messenger, which was really stupid of me because now I wont know what was the real cause of my problems, but I was just desperate to have my computer working again. :o I had a sneaking suspicion that the messenger was causing the problem even back in October when I first experienced it. But because I didnt dare to log on since I got it to work the first time, I forgot all about it. Its been active in the background though. I will try to use it again but not until after the New Years and holidays lest something goes wrong again. ;)

Anyway, enough about computers. :p Tennis is only 2 days away now! :bounce: And Eurosport is covering Doha, one match a day starting Monday. :D

I cant stay long, because its 1 am and Ive had a really busy day, I just wanted to let you know that youll probably see a bit more of me from now on (fingers crossed).

How is everyone?

This is horrible :( Ugh, at any rate, at least you have options. Running recovery on your system won't make you lose any documents, so I don't think reinstalling Windows would, either. If you could switch to XP, I would suggest you do. I've not really heard good things about ME, well, ever. And if you could get the second edition of XP, even better. That's what I have now and it's great :) Basically, don't ever get a first edition of an operating system is my advice there ;)

But, and this sounds pretty bad I know, you can't work without a computer or the internet, since you receive your assignments through email, no? So I'm pretty confident you won't ever have to leave us completely. I sure hope not, I really miss you and I'd really hate it if you had to leave :(

I think I might be able to get a pirate copy of XP if anything else goes wrong. My friend knows the right people. ;)

As for the internet, I'm afraid I can't really claim it is essential to my work. :( I only got it less than half a year ago and I managed just fine without it. Of course that was back in the days when my library was still there. But my aunt lives just a 10 minute walk away from me and we often work together, so I could easily send and recieve work through her, just like before.

But of course now I can't live without the internet, so I was even considering buying a new computer, if all else failed. Not that I could afford it, but I'd be willing to sacrifice the trip to Tuscany I've been planning (or to Scotland, don't know yet, I just have to go somewhere) at this point just to get internet back. I cannot be helped. :o

According to my hubby, USB ports actually don't need IRQ so there should not be any problem with your ethernet card and USB ports with same IRQ number.

Your computer is about 6 months old so it is reasonable that you don't think you have similar problem as mine. The only think I can suggest is try to find a pattern (other than using after how long). e.g. are you running any other programs like MS outlook, MS word, etc. when you are surfing. I assume you use MIE as browser. Do your monitor has energy saver function, do you set up to auto dim, etc. My computer has this funny thing that once I bring up MS outlook, if I close it and leave the computer on, when the energy saver function kick in, it freeze. So I have to always leave my MS outlook on.

Thank you so much for all the info. OK, I know I said no more computer talk, but I just want to reply to this. There is/was no pattern. Whenever the modem was hooked up, it would freeze no matter what I did. I could just switch it on, leave it be and come back 10 minutes later, try to open anything and it would freeze on me. Or I would open one lousy word document and work on that and it would freeze. So basically, I didn't even have to run the Internet Explorer and surf the web, it would freeze anyway. This problem resurfaced when I connected the camera's optical reader into one of the USB ports and downloaded my dad's photos. After this operation I immediately lost the connection with my internet provider and I rebooted the modem. 10 minutes later the computer froze and the rest, as they say, is history.

To me, it's not so much "ATPWorld" as "you guys" for the reason I come here and participate. I like most of the people here, and of course I consider you guys a great group of friends :) so if you left, then I'd follow wherever you went. Breaking onto a message board can be a big deal sometimes which is why I'm hesitant to move. I don't really consider the stuff that happens on WTAWorld to affect the goings-on of this board unless one of you is involved, personally. WTAWorld is shit, I rather regret going against myself and joining, and I rarely ever visit there.

But whatever you guys decide, just let me know and I'll follow . . .

I agree with everything you've said. :D So I guess nothing has changed in the 10 days I was away. ;)

I'll go wherever you guys decide to go. I'm not too apprehensive to break onto a new message board, but I'd also hate to lose this forum with all its posts and articles and pics. I just wish there was an easier way navigate a long thread like this one, a way to jump to a specific page. It would take me a day if I wanted to find say page 300.

LOL, I'd love to find out what happened last night, but it'll have to wait until tomorrow. It's now 2 am and I'm in dire need of sleep.

I never played video games, but I can be addicted to even the simplest games, let alone a complicated adventure. I remember drawing elaborated maps for all my games, and one game had 64,000 locations (of course I only discovered a fraction of them). I still play some of them. You probably don't remember the zx spectrum computers, but you had to load the game by playing it on a tape. And the volume and sound had to be just right or it wouldn't load. So if the tape is even slightly damaged, you can kiss your game goodbye. :( And those tapes are over 15 years old by now. Most of the games still work though: :D

There was a game called Travel with Trashman that I loved. You had to pick up all the trash as soon as possible, because you were losing money all the time, and every piece of trash you picked up (it could be anything from coconuts to empty beer glasses depending on the location) was worse a certain amount, so you had to make money faster than you were losing it. And when you picked up everything in one location you needed to have enough money to fly to another one. There were always 3 options. Adorable! :) Oh and there were people around and when somebody touched you you lost money in a hurry, so you had to avoid them at all costs. But there was this one location (Madrid) where you had to pick up roses thrown into a bull-fighting arena while the bull was chasing you. And that bull still gives me nightmares. I just couldn't shake him and invariably ended up dead. And when he got me, I would just sit there shaking. It always took me several minutes to calm down lol.

In the game I have now you can't die :D and that's a big plus. But yeah, I was considering buying a tennis game, but they're too expensive.

Oh and I can even lose track of time playing solitaire. It's always just one more, I just want to win one more. But I play the difficult one, I think it's called spider solitaire, or arachnid or something like that. Very difficult to actually win.

Anyway, before I lose track of time babbling about computer games, I better say goodnight. ;) I'll continue replying to old posts tomorrow. :p

Good night TH and whoever else makes it here tonight! Sweet dreams! :wavey:

Rivers! :hearts: It's fortunate that none of my friends know who Weezer are, so I can't really talk about him. ;) You got Maladroit? Cool! :D Tell me what you think. I have to admit I'm getting more and more fond of Pinkerton. It grows on you. The songs are very powerful. Sure, they're a bit odd and not as polished as the Blue ones, but emotionally they're wide open, like a huge gaping wound. Irresistible. It's become my second favorite album after the blue one. :)

Right, now I'm really going to bed! I'd love to stay here and chat some more (it's been such a long time), but I'm gonna hate myself in the morning. ;) Big winter sports day tomorrow, there are two skiing events and ski jumping, plus I still have quite a bit of work to do.

Night night! :wavey:

:) Hi all!

Just a quick post before bedtime. Glad Layla's back! I echo Hackie's "Tuscany or Scotland"! Nice choice but so different! What do you like about these places? I'd love to go to Siena. I've been to Edinburgh and the Lowlands -- it's beautiful up there but the Highlands are supposed to be even better!

Leo and ILR have the same birthdays? Rogi's a Leo too! And ILR's brother's birthday is one week before mine, which is Jan. 25, two days before Marat's! [we're both flaky Aquarians!]:p

Hi Lee -- feeling better?

Gotta go to sleep -- went out for a BIG FAT GREEK dinner with friends in the Greek area [where MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING was filmed!]

Layla: lucky you -- you get Doha! Hope ROGI does well there!!Keep us posted if you can! ;)

Dissident, I couldn't find a match on the internet, but I'm guessing it has something to do with a Pearl Jam cd. It's not the cover of Riot Act and the concert cds all have plain brown covers, so maybe it's a photo inside Riot Act?

TH, so Jarkko won? Hehe, I bet I know why. ;) So how did you like Maladroit? I've already listened to Blue and Pinkerton while I was attaching glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling of my room. It looks gorgeous. And I made kick-ass mocha muffins to the sound of Riot Act!

Hmmmm, I should go back and reply to some of the old posts.

I'm making a copy of the story, by the way, so if I don't reply for awhile that's what I'm doing. I forgot it was long . . . and complicated

I listened to the No Doubt CD that houses most of the first songs I used yesterday and had a good time reminiscing. I'm quite glad its back nonetheless :D

And I still haven't listened to any of my new CDs. I'm been incredibly busy since I've been home, but I think it will slow down next week when all of my friends go back to school. It'll be nice to finish my tennis tapes and just basically do nothing for a week before I go back to school.

Eureka! I got it! It's one of the photos from No Code! I remember reading that you got a bunch of fanatastic CD's for Christmas. I should go back and check which ones. How did you like it? I just looooooove Smile, even though it's such a corny and apparently Neil Youngish song (the harmonica and all that). And sometimes is one of my faves as well. Damn, all those songs are great!

TH, I changed my location too. ;)

You asked about the cds I got, didnt you?

I got No Code, Coldplays A Rush of Blood to the Head (which is fabulous) and Foo Fighters One by One.
Also, the Diablo 2 game, which I highly recommend you keep distance from! Serious addiction problems!

And yesterday I bought three new cds, two PJs and a best of Ramones. All these three for 30 reais, something less then 10 US Dollars.
The first three (No Code, coldplay, foos) were originals, though... :p

Layla
12-31-2002, 08:28 PM
Oh dear god nooooooooooooo! (that was in response to the mohawk) *still shuddering*

Yep, I love Coldplay's new album too. :hearts: Should I download Foo Fighters? I've heard some songs and they sound awesome! I also like that Queens of the Stone Age single. I just borrowed the CD from the library (they don't have any Foo Fighters, and would you believe it, they don't have any Weezer either :( they're just not popular in Europe), but I haven't listened to it yet.

By the way, Foo Fighters have by far the coolest vidoes around! They all make me laugh! Dave is such a goofball. :D

Which 2 PJ cd's did you buy yesterday?

I had a Coldplay special on MTV last night, and it was awesome as well. I love that band. :D In My Place rocks! And all the others songs are great too. They are gonna tour in the Us this first semester. I guess we should start to tell Hackie to go! :D lol

As for the Foos, the CD is great too. And I agree about Grohl. He is a riot. :p
I heard Queens of the Stone Age is wonderful as well. Mike McCready voted it in his top five for best cds of 2002. :) I havent heard it yet, since I cant find it anywhere.

The two PJs are pirate bootlegs. :o
Im always ashamed, because there are many pirate PJs out there because of their open policy to copies. They let their shows be recorded and TRADED. People use that to make cds to sell. :( But we cant find those songs if we dont buy them. So, its a check mate.
I bought two of those, very cheap. One is all live, and the other is a mix of live with some studio versions. One has Baba ORiley and Generation, the other has a Black version with a Hunger Strike Improv in the beggining, Light my Fire with Ive got a Feeling, and the great version of Better man where Ed unvealed the song
"This song... I dont think you ever heard it... its a new song, but it was written a long time ago, deticated to the bastard that married my moma."

:D

Don't worry, I'm quite happy with the one game I have. ;) Like I said (or was it on the other forum) I bought it over a month ago but I only play it for about 2 hours total. I was way to busy to indulge in computer games. I think I'll play it tomorrow morning, or rather afternoon. I don't intend to get up too early tomorrow. ;) I decided to watch a movie tonight or something, followed by Pearl Jam unplugged (I taped that on the VCR almost 10 years ago) and of course Weezer videos :hearts::hearts::hearts:

I'm really glad I decided not to go out. It usually sucks and I just come back tired and frustrated. If there was a good concert somewhere I'd go, but the music on offer is awful. :p

Rogi is very sweet! :)

Federer, Costa Advance in Doha
Roger Federer now meets fellow Swiss Michel Kratochvil in the second round.

Top seed Roger Federer struggled in his opening match of the 2003 season, but came through with a 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-4 victory over lucky loser, Andrei Stoliarov, who received a place in the main draw following Greg Rusedskis withdrawal. The Swiss couldn't convert on two match points in the second set, but held tough in the third to advance to the second round at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2003.

No. 2 seed Albert Costa had a much simpler match, defeating Andrea Gaudenzi 6-3, 6-4. The biggest casualty of the day was No. 4 seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who fell to Spain's Fernando Vicente 6-2, 7-5. The Russian is always dangerous on hard courts, but he struggled with spotty results in 2002. Nevertheless, he ended the year on a high note, helping Russia claim the Davis Cup title.

What the players said:

Federer
Obviously I would have preferred to have won in two sets and not risk losing in a third sets. I had two match points, I could have won in straight sets as well. Suddenly he held his serve, it went into a tie-break and it was 50-50. But its not getting to my head that I had to play three sets. I never lost my serve today, thats good for my confidence.

About playing Kratochvil on Wednesday
Its just more nerve wrecking to play a countryman. Theres a little bit of rivalry, Im number one in Switzerland and I want to show that Im still number one. He [Kratochvil] had a little bit of a disappointing season last year but I still think hes a dangerous player. Ill try to play my game, I want to do well here and win as many matches as I can.

Costa
"I was playing well, I was feeling comfortable. The first match in a tournament is always difficult and playing the first match of the new season is extremely difficult."

I never won a tournament on hard court. To win one is one of my goals of the year. I think its only mental.

About playing Vinciguerra in the second round
Tomorrow is another match, Andreas is a very good fighter. Hes a very good player, hes dangerous, young and hungry. And he wants to win but Im going to want the same on the other side of the net.

Kafelnikov
My leg was feeling ok. I think it was a matter of the lack of matches, Ive hardly played a match for one and a half months. All I need is to practice a bit more. I cant comeback after surgery and expect to play at the level I used to play at.

WEDNESDAY'S PREVIEW

Two of Morocco's top tennis stars, Hicham Arazi and Younes El Aynaoui, will meet up in second-round action in Doha on the first day of the new year. The No. 3 seed El Aynaoui is looking to win here in Doha for the second consecutive year. Last year, the Moroccan, who ended the year in the No. 22 spot of the ATP Champions Race, claimed a total of three titles (Casablanca and Munich, along with Doha). El Aynaoui goes into his second-round match with a slight edge, having defeated Arazi in their only previous meeting at the 2002 US Open.

In another battle of fellow compatriots, top seed Roger Federer takes on another rising Swiss Michel Kratochvil. The 21-year-old Federer, who came in sixth place in the ATP Champions Race 2002, has overcome the 23-year-old Kratochvil both times they've met. No. 2 seed Albert Costa, who like Federer was one of the elite eight to play at the 2002 Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, meets qualifier Andreas Vinciguerra. This will be their first meeting.

Happy New Year Ferrerogrrl! :D Yeah, Vartan is gorgeous, so the movie can suck all it wants! ;) Errr, no I didn't find Tom Riddle ridiculously attractive. I do find Snape irresistably attractive though. :o I adore Alan Rickman and those longish black hair... :hearts:

So you're not partying either TH? For a moment I thought I was the only one. There's plenty of fun to be had at home as well. ;) I'm gonna pour myself a glass of Port (I don't have any champagne actually) and enjoy the movie.

See you later! :wavey:

LOL, no, you're not the only one who doesn't party. I don't mind spending the holiday by myself, we've never really done anything special for New Years'.

See ya! :wavey:

Boy did that movie suck! Sooooooo bad! :p But I don't mind. Vartan was gorgeous, and after I've seen all the Weezer videos I'll be about ready to go to bed. ;)

And to everyone who will drop by later, once again...

That's okay that no one's around to celebate my New Year (T minus 1 hour). I live in almost the latest time zone so I understand.

By the way, HAPPY NEW YEAR to my favorite Guga fanatic :wavey:

Gonna get back to my hockey game, my team is doing great this year, but they haven't win a hockey game on New Year Eve for the past 10 years . It's a tie game with 20 mns to go, hope they get lucky this year.

I saw my PM, thanks, LOL :D And I had fun, my friend and I just kinda bummed around and I burned a CD for her (and unsuccessfully tried to burn another :(). I've also been watching MTV's Most Talked About Moments of 2002 and some of them were quite funny. I kinda wish I'd seen the VMAs this year, apparently Jimmy Fallon as host was pretty damn funny. He was the #1 moment.

Bad News!

Mary Pierce just lost to Paolo Suarez in the 2nd round of the ASB Classic! i was hoping she would get revenge after her loss to the Argentine in the 1st round of the US Open, but i guess it wasn't meant to be.  but it was 3 tight sets - 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 - so at least she put up a good fight. i wish Mary could get in better shape and maybe shed a few pounds, but it's so hard for her to train when she's always injured. :(

I slept in today and now I'm enjoying a ski jumping event. Well actually tennis has just started on Eurosport. The featured match will be El Aynaoui :fiery: (again) and Arazi, but right now they're showing the end of Costa vs. Vinciguerra.

Costa Tumbles, Federer Cruises
Second seed Albert Costa fell to Swede Andreas Vinciguerra.

On the first day of the new year, No. 2 seed Albert Costa succumbed to Swedish qualifier Andreas Vinciguerra, who secured a berth in the quarterfinals at Doha with a 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 victory. Costa was 5-4 up in the third set, when Vinciguerra came back to win the last three games of the match. Vinciguerra, who was out with a hand and lower back injury for seven months last year, now meets Stefan Koubek of Austria.

Top seed Roger Federer, however, kept himself in the running for the Doha title, defeating fellow Swiss Michel Kratochvil 6-4, 6-4. Also on Wednesday, defending champion Younes El Aynaoui came through in yet another battle of countrymen, dismissing fellow Moroccan Hicham Arazi 6-4, 7-6(1). And France's Fabrice Santoro saved four match points in his match with Christophe Rochus, winning 7-5, 6-7(8), 7-5. Rochus was 5-1 up in the third set, when Santoro stormed back to win six consecutive games.

What the players said:

Costa
He was better than me today, he was playing a very good match. It was very difficult to play today, it was very windy. I didnt enjoy it but I tried very hard. I had 0-40 in the last game but I couldnt break him.

I had many chances to win the match, it was a tight match. Im disappointed but at least I tried everything possible. I was 100 per cent mentally today, Im happy about that. I think I played good tennis but you still need to get the rhythm back in the first tournament of the year.

Vinciguerra
I played very well today, I played better on the important points. I had nothing to lose, I just went out there and had fun. He [Costa] is one of the best players Ive ever beaten. Its one of my best wins.

I was out for seven months last year, I broke my hand and then had a fracture in my lower back. Ive never practiced as much as I have the last couple of months and Ive never been as well prepared for a new season. I want to reach my old ranking, then I can set some new goals. If I continue to play well I think I can get there pretty quick. Ill just continue to work hard. I think I can play even better than I am doing now.

El Aynaoui
I think I played well and better than in the first round. After the first break I felt confident, after that it was a one way match. I stayed calm and waited for the right moments. I wanted to win but I feel bad for my friend but I think I played better than him and that I deserved to win. I expect a tough match in the quarterfinals but Im feeling confident.

Federer
I think I improved from yesterday. I served better and I was solid today. I also felt better from the baseline today. Each match I win is good for me and a win against a countryman in the beginning of the year gives me confidence. I believe that the best tennis is still to come from me.

THURSDAY'S PREVIEW

Younes El Aynaoui is now three matches away from claiming the Doha title for the second consecutive year, but he next faces the tricky, spinmaster Fabrice Santoro in the quarterfinals. With his unconventional two-fisted groundstrokes, the Frenchman has toppled some of the game's best players. And after saving four match points in his second-round match, Santoro is brimming with assurance. Santoro and El Aynaoui have met six times before, with both players claiming three matches. The last time they met, last year in Hamburg, the Moroccan walked away a straight sets winner.

Top seed Roger Federer, meanwhile, will square off against American Jan-Michael Gambill. Federer has won all three previous meetings against Gambill, but the American plays his best tennis on hard courts and is intent on getting off to a positive start in 2003, having struggled with mixed results in the previous season.

Federer and Rusedski Take to the Desert in Qatar

Roger Federer took a test drive with a G 500 Mercedes-Benz sports utility vehicle in the Qatari desert outside Doha. After climbing the sand dynes with the car Federer was joined in the desert by Greg Rusedski. They then rode together on Arabian horses as well as holding a falcon, a national symbol of Qatar.

It was fun. Ive never been on a horse before, never saw a falcon, and Ive never driven in the sand before. It was a little bit like driving in the snow, which Im used to, said Federer

I was riding on a horse in the desert here in 1999 and I also took some lessons in Spain during a riding holiday. I was actually more concerned about Roger riding on a horse for the first time, said Rusedski.

Federer was joined by his girlfriend Miroslava Vavrinec, while Rusedski was accompanied by his wife Lucy.

Kids Clinics in Doha

Several Kids Clinics were arranged at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2003 in Doha, Qatar. ATP Players Albert Costa, Fabrice Santoro, Martin Damm and Cyril Suk gave some local Qatari youngsters a chance to hit some balls with their idols.

Yeah, I understand what you mean :) My taste is rather underrated -- I don't like the so-called "hot" guys, especially those who are really pretty. I have a type, but most of my boys are rather ordinary looking.

I agree, I like maturity :)
