ATP NEWS Dec. 18, 2002

He's Back: Sampras To Play in 2003
Announcement follows three months of quiet contemplation for the 14-time Grand Slam winner.

Pete Sampras has not played a tournament match since winning his 14th Grand Slam title at the US Open in September. And tennis fans across the globe have been waiting and hoping that the seven-time Wimbledon champion would return for another year.

After much speculation by the tennis and sports press during the past three months, Sampras told the Los Angeles Times yesterday that he will be playing in 2003.

"I'll start in February in San Jose," he said. "And then go right from there to tournaments in Scottsdale, [TMS] Indian Wells and [TMS] Miami."

While he announced that he would skip the Australian Open next month, his plans include the other three Grand Slam tournaments: Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open. The last time Sampras missed the Australian Open was in 1999, after which he went on to win four ATP titles and a record-breaking sixth Wimbledon crown.

Along with the three Grand Slams and the early season American hard-court circuit, Pete Sampras has also committed to the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston this April.

Sampras, who made his decision last week that he would continue playing, said the announcement has been a relief. "Now that I've decided that I'm announcing it and letting people know, it feels good," he said.

But Sampras told the LA Times that he did not want 2003 to be seen as a farewell tour. "I'm just going to see how it goes, just kind of ride he wave and see how far it take me."

The announcement ends months of public speculation and tennis-fan discourse over the competitive future of one of the sport's great champions.

The last time Sampras had addressed the media was on the heels of his US Open victory, when he said: "I'm gonna have to weigh it up in the next couple months to see where I'm at. I still want to play. I love to play. But to beat a rival like Andre in a major tournament at the US Open, a story book ending, it might be nice to stop."

After that, Sampras withdrew from the rest of the season's fall indoor tournaments. Wife Bridgette gave birth to a baby boy, Christian Charles, in late November.

Oh, that. It's supposingly on TBS, Dec 20. In fact, this schedule is listed on the Davis Cup site. But then it makes me wonder, is that another station called TBS in Europe or somewhere else bcos it didn't say TBS US. And for TBS to show it is pretty out of character. And I couldn't find it on the TBS site. But I'll keep checking it anyway. It's listed at 0300 to 0430 so I'm assuming it's Dec 20th at 3am EST. I don't know about satelite cos I'm on cable. My cable package do carries TBS.

Hitman and I figured out what was wrong with my DLing -- a firewall installed by my school. Oh, well I think he's a whiny baby anyway, can't stand the whole boy band movement, but you should definitely watch his video -- it's hilarious. Timbaland's in the car talking about how "the damage has been done" while Justin skulks around his girl's home while she's not there ("It wasn't supposed to be Britney, I swear!" Justin cries in articles about the video). And of course when he has a half-naked girl crawling all over him while he shows off his patented "I'm wounded" look

But really, you should see it, if only for the comedic factor.

James Blake's spectacular performance at the U.S. Open last year made for a couple of memorable photo ops. First came the pictures of the unseeded tennis player in action against top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt, published in sports pages across the country. Then came the pictures of a dehydrated Blake throwing up on court, circulated via e-mail by his pals. "It is good to have friends like that," says the 22- year-old. "I appreciate them keeping me down-to-earth!" Since his debut, the 6'1" Blake, who left Harvard in 1999 after two years to turn pro, has soared from 219th to 28th in the rankings -- and signed with a modeling agency. "Everybody makes fun of him for that," says brother Thomas, 25, who's also on the pro tour and lives with James in Tampa. "People are calling him GQ." All the hubbub aside, Blake remains close to dad Thomas, 55, a salesman, and mom Betty, 67, a tennis-club administrator. He's currently without a girlfriend, which Harvard pal Camila McLean, 23, attributes to shyness. "He never wants to be the 'Hel-LO, I'm James Blake' kind of guy,' " she says. "But he needs to figure out how to work that into his mojo!"

I doubt he's not having a girl friend cos he's shy. There are lots of girls introduce themselves to him. :) :) But, he do looks very shy.

Perhaps all these girls introducing themselves to him just makes him shyer. I know the feeling -- I'd probably be uncomfortable with people I just meet knowing more about me than I know about them. Still, he seems like a genuinely nice guy and sometimes shyness just adds to the sexiness :)

Hi Hackie!

What tapes were you watching? Do you realize that in about 10 days it starts all over again! Time to stock up on tapes for the AUSSIE OPEN03!

Besides the GS and the TMS, which other tournaments do you Americans get on TV?? [and DC USA of course]

Hi, RF!

I was watching the US Open again -- Days 3 & 4, mostly a bunch of matches I didn't want to watch but that's okay, the good stuff is coming :) I still have the TMSes and the WTA Championships and the Masters Cup to watch and they will be lots more fun.

Although I have to say, Mac Phone and watching PattyMac get his ass kicked by Jimmy Conners (1RD, 1991 US Open) was very amusing :D

We get some of the American tournaments -- LA, Scottsdale, San Jose, Washington, D.C., Long Island -- in addition to the Masters Series & Grand Slams. There are several channels that have coverage of tournaments so you really have to keep an eye on the schedule.

I can't wait for the season to start again, though I'm very sad that Thomas Johansson isn't even going to get a chance to try and defend his title :sad::sad: Now everyone's going to think he was a fluke and didn't deserve to win.

Am I reading this correctly, or do I get DC coverage at 3am this morning? :o

Hi everyone! :wavey:

Itís me again. I just wanted to explain my situation in more detail. I got the ethernet card installed and everything was fine for about an hour and a half. I was just about to start celebrating, when my computer froze again. After that it was back to freezing after every 10 minutes. Itís exactly the same problem I had 2 or 3 months ago, when they replaced my modem. Only this time theyíre not keen on doing it again because thereís obviously a problem with my computer. The weird thing is that the computer works just fine if the modem is disconnected, which is good because at least I can work and do everything else. But I want my internet back!!! :( I have no idea what to do. The cable guy will come around on Monday, but he didnít sound too optimistic.

So itís safe to say that NOW is definitely a good time to start freaking out. :p It seems more and more likely that I will have to spend the holidays without my internet link, and I know that sounds pathetic, but Iím devastated.   I guess itís my turn for the holiday blues now and Iím entering the Slough of Despond as we speak. Well, I wasnít around much in the past few weeks so you probably wonít even notice Iím gone, but believe me, I will miss you guys.

Shit, life just isnít fair. I worked so hard for 3 weeks and I was really looking forward to being able to come here more often and do all the other fun stuff thatís only available on the internet. But now that most of my work is done, the very thing that got me through those frustrating, insanely long working days and nights, is denied to me.

Well at least I managed to tape those Weezer greatest hits yesterday, so I can take some comfort watching my sweetheart over the holidays. ;) TH, I believe you wanted to know which ones they chose. Island in the Sun, The Sweater Song, El Scortcho (sp?), Hash Pipe and Keep Fishiní. Itís a shame they didnít pick Say It Ainít So, because that video is awesome, much better than the Sweater Song one. El Scortcho is really weird do. Rivers looks so lost and miserable, I just want to hug him. ;)

And of course I have my new Pearl Jam concert (I mean Pittsburgh) to keep me company. :D Thanks for that Hitman, itís un-freaking-believable!!! I just wish I could download the Lisbon one as well, and check out that Audioslave link, I hear they kick ass live! :( See, I canít escape my own sadness, so I better shut up before I depress everyone else. :p

I hope yíall are having a much better day. :) Again, have a great weekend everyone! :wavey:

p.s. hehe, Iím clever, so I wrote this in a word document and then copied and pasted it here. 10 minutes is such a short time, Iíd never be able to post anything but a prolonged haul of anguish. ;) Which reminds me...

When you said your computer freeze, does it not responding at all like it's dead or it seems it's very busy (usually there is a red light near the power light, if is solid or non-stop flashing)? Yeah that's too bad about Johansson! Why can't someone who shall remain nameless either decide to retire or simply not show up next year!!!

Washington and L. Island sound interesing... I'm not so familiar w the LA, Scottsdale and S Jose tournaments -- I guess because my fave European guys don't usually play them. But I'm happy that Hewitt beat that aforementioned nameless person in S Jose!!

I just remembered an e-mail my friend forward to me. I cannot verify the origin and how true it is but since it make sense to me, I like to share with everyone here.

Trust this is a real story.

To all my lady friends.... those who travel.

This email was forwarded to me by a friend.

Ladies, u must read this for safety when staying in a hotel. To all ladies - for your safety precautions when travelling.

Please read and keep in mind when you are traveling and forward female friends and colleagues who may travel alone.

I've always used the menu which hang outside your doorknob to order breakfast when on business trips. I was recently staying at a well known hotel and I ordered room service for the next day on the flyer-like thing that you stick outside your door. On this order form, one writes her name, how many persons will be eating, your room number, time of delivery etc. I hung it on the outside of my door for collection Ė it is a mistake ! I had given someone all the ammunition that he would need.

That someone went to my door-tag.... Got my name and room number.... and then told the front desk that he was my husband (remember my tag showed 1 female name) and that he needed a new key. The clerk ... WITHOUT ASKING FOR ID OR CALLING MY ROOM ... GAVE HIM MY ROOM KEY!

At 2 a.m. I was awakened by my door opening (luckily I had put the security bar across) with a man's hand trying to figure out how to get the bar undone. I started yelling at him and told him that I was on the phone with the police. He shut the door and left. I called down to the lobby and spoke with the Front Desk - I wanted to alert Security about the incident. The hotel staff person said ... and I quote, "oops, sorry about that" then hung up. Well, let's just say that I was both terrified and angry the rest of the night. Next morning, I spoke with a Hotel Manager whose eyes almost popped out of his head when he learned that his clerk had given an unidentified stranger a key to my room.

Am I glad that I am typing this to all of you with my 2 year old kid on my lap. I don't want to think of what might have happened if the safety chain/bar had not been secured.

Please forward this to your female family members & friends. Better be safe than sorry.

Yeah, it was a long day Lee. :(
I started feeling some pain in my lower back last night, and I woke up worse. Since I had that last year (around this time of the year, to be more precise), and it led me to a micro surgery, I called the doctor as soon as I woke up. He asked me to go see him, so I did. He said the inflamation is really small, almost inexistent, and gave me some medicines to take. It should get better soon, but itīs really uncomfortable. :(

And then I had to go to the Shopping Center again, as some things were missing.
Now Iīm listening to some Pearl Jam on my new stereo. :)

Oh, no!:sad::sad::sad::sad::sad: You will definitely be missed!! You are a rock of this place, why do you think it's been so dead? We haven't been around as much as usual :(

*many hugs* I hope you can get back soon enough. No one should be depressed at this time of the year, especially when you have to be alone :(

Thanks for that!! I only have one of their videos on tape beacuse MTV rarely if ever plays them here :(

And hitman, yes, the Pittsburgh concert rocks!! I put it on when I was wrapping gifts this afternoon, the first disc as list. It's great!! And I'm working on Lisbon :)

Are you baking cookies too? I'm almost done since most people are on diets or sth boring like that... and can't eat them -- so I eat them myself!! :p

LOL, I agree with you totally, RF, on the unnamed person ;)

Washington & Long Island are usually shown by Fox affiliates, so they're not as well-covered, but whatever. I got to see James win his first title, so I can't complain :)

Yes, I bake cookies -- I haven't baked any yet this year because I've been so busy, but I'm planning to do some next week. I love homemade Christmas cookies :)

I was watching my US Open tapes again tonight, Day 4's rain delay. LOL, after interviewing players in the players' lounge (including Kimmy :)), they had Justin Gimelstob commentating his own match and old footage (1997) of Jonas Bjorkman doing his impressions of JohnnyMac's & Boris Becker's serves. They also had some footage of JohnnyMac fulfilling a promise of standing on his head if Richard Krajieck lost a match (LOL) and the MacPhone, when people called up JohnnyMac and asked him questions. Too funny!!

Lee- THanks for the story.

I'm likely going to do alittle travelling alone next summer. Granted, I would never use a system of ordering like that anyhow. As they go, I have pretty good street smarts. You see, some good does come out of dysfunctional families ;)

I went to NYC this summer with my friend, who is totally NOT street smart at all. Mind you, she seems to think that she is. And would always insist on leading the way, and being in control etc etc. I drove me up the freaking wall, you have no idea :fiery:

We've been friends forever, so it's nothing that is going to shake up the friendship. But sheesh :o

SO we were on the subway going back to where we were staying in Soho from a long day at the US Open (which is in queens).

We are supposed to take the 7 to Times Square, then hop on the 6 to Princess or thereabouts. So we accidently hopped on the 4, because we didn't realize they ran that line at night (it doens't run during the day). Anyhow, so I realized this before the next stop and was like "Caroline, we're getting off at the next stop", and was all calm about it. And she was like "what!? why". So I nudged her in the direction of the [b]4[b/] that was glaring at us from the other side of the train, heh.

She took a mini bird, making it clear to anyone on that half of the train that "hi, we're tourists and got on the wrong train, and don't know where we are". Which wasn't even totally true. Turns out we got off and Union station and hopped on the 6 that came by about 2 minutes later.

The moral of the story? SOme people just aren't street smart :p Dont' travel with them! :D

Obviously, no one is here.

Becca, like the new name here!

Dissident, sorry to hear about your lower back and hope you're better today.

Layla, come back soon!!!!!!

Came on this morning and saw the bad news of Tommy and Magnus. It seems everyday there are players going through operations to fix shoulder, knee, back, hip, etc....

It's amazing that seems Pete is the only top player (over 25) never has a major injury that sideline him for a period of time. May be this is a topic I can start in GM. Keep your fingers cross for young players like Juanqui, Rogi, Hewitt, etc.

Anyway, don't have much time to start that right now. Since my hubby is on vacation, that means non-stop running around instead of staying in the house.

Ciao! :wavey:

i just saw Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers last night! :bounce: a great movie in all respects, but i have to say a little flat after the first movie. i didn't think there was enough character development in the Two Towers, and too much battle going on. i was a little disappointed b/c my fave characters (Legolas, Cate Blanchett's charatcer, Merry, and Pippin) weren't in this one as much even though they didn't have some good lines here and there. the new characters that were introduced were compelling however and i liked how they shook everything up. and the ending was suspenseful also.. can't wait to find out what happens next!

Steve Bellamy, president of the channel, has created an online petition which will be forwarded to cable operators to give them an idea of the significant interest in a full-time coverage of tennis.

I can't believe you guys don't have movie theatres

My hometown is considered to be small, by southern Ontario standards. When I'm at university and refer to it, people actually refer to how small it is - perhaps a bit of a misconception.

Anyhow - we have a movie theatre, a few malls, and even a zoo :D

There are about 75 000 people here. The "problem" is that the nearest city of decent size is about a 45 minute drive away, so we have to have everything ;)

Leo, welcome back! How're those tests, assignments, etc last week?

I am going to celebrate Winter Solstice with my family of 3 since for Chinese, this is a day for family gathering like Christmas for westerners. We are going to have a hot pot, sort of like fondue but with boiling soup in a large pot. We will have lobster tail, tiger prawn, oyster, tofu and different kind of veggie.

Happy Winter Solstice! :wavey:

doing all those tests and assignments was of course a bitch but i'm so pleased to have finished! :bounce: the major assignment was my science paper, and i handed that in on monday. after that my week was crammed with math tests, english papers, and a french oral. but now i can finally relax... for 2 weeks anyway :D

:) Hey Leo!

When do you get your tennisvideos tapes? I'm watching old matches -- from Paris [Moya d AA!!]. I might order a couple of tapes from them in the New Year.

Is it windy out there! No snow -- only a few flakes flying about! :p

Leo7

hey RF. i love that Moya/Agassi match from Paris. i have it on tape. :D

i'm not sure when my tapes come in from sports resources (i'm not even sure if they've been sent yet) but they said it would take about 28 days for delivery.

and now i must go :wavey:
