He's a smarmy, smartass writer for Rolling Stone. He used to have his own column, Pop Eye, but that was axed when RS went with its new layout this year (and its new editor). I'll try to get a sample of his work and let you read it :)

Not his best article, but the most recent (will look for better examples):

Wasted Youth
Sum 41 will try anything once. Except sobriety

The members of Sum 41 all look like they're twelve years old, except the bassist -- he looks like he's eleven. But somehow, they exude innocence even when they're talking about drugs and strippers. Four Canadian kids who grew up in the humble town of Ajax, Ontario, they now tour the planet and party down together. As any Canadian will tell you, there's small-town boredom, and then there's Canadian small-town boredom; the wide open spaces of the Great White North lend themselves to the rock & roll excess that only the world's most boring places can inspire. Sum 41 know a lot about excess.
"We're basically four guys who've known each other our whole lives," says singer-guitarist Deryck Whibley. He, bassist Cone McCaslin, guitarist Dave Baksh and drummer Steve "Stevo32" Jocz are all twenty-one or twenty-two. They got together straight out of high school, having played in all the different local punk bands, and hit the big time in 2001 with their 3 million-selling pop-punk debut, All Killer No Filler. The snotty hit "Fat Lip" was full of rowdy guitars and whiny rapping; it established Sum 41 as the missing link between the Beastie Boys of Licensed to Ill and Blink-182. Their metal-tinged new album basically sums up their approach to life: Does This Look Infected? How Canadian are they? Jocz has a cousin who named his two sons Geddy and Alex, after two-thirds of Rush.

Only Canadian kids could still sound so wholesome while spinning such depraved road stories. For instance, just the week before we meet in New York in early November, there was the little episode in Tokyo with the liquid LSD. "We were drinking at Lexington Queen, this bar in Tokyo," Jocz remembers. "The last time we were there, we were all high on mushrooms, because they're legal in Japan. So this time, me and Deryck went to this head shop across the street and said, 'Gimme the strongest thing you got.' And he gave us four vials apiece of liquid acid. I was on my third vial before we realized what it was. There was this big poster of Scooby-Doo. We stared at it for about an hour, terrified. And everyone said, 'Steve, go up and touch it to make sure it's not real.' So I went and touched it. It was just a poster, but we were so scared. Never again!" Right now we're on our way to a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, with prime courtside tickets. Despite the fact that Sum 41 are conspicuous as the only spiked-hair punkers in the Garden, nobody pays much attention. The only recognition comes from a middle-aged security guard who jerks his thumb and says, "Hey, what's my age again!" (Wrong band, dude, but an A for effort.) "Nobody notices us," says Baksh, the band's Guyanese guitarist, whose tax forms probably list his occupation as "the quiet one." "Nobody ever notices me. They don't know whether I'm Dave from Sum 41 or Tony from No Doubt." The Knicks game is a bore, and we spend most of our time there talking about music. Jocz is excited to be in Madison Square Garden because it's where Sly Stone had his wedding onstage in 1974. Whibley, who looks like Chris Isaak's Mini-Me, grew up in Ajax with his single mom, obsessed with rock & roll. "I used to form bands with my G.I. Joes," he says. "I would make them sing Beatles and Monkees songs." When he hit his teens, he discovered Nirvana and punk rock. "I was a Kurt kid. I had the hair; I had the cardigans. And that's when I started writing songs."

Sum 41 hits such as "Fat Lip" and "Motivation" goof on teen angst, but on Infected, Whibley has grown more thoughtful. " 'The Hell Song' is about a friend of ours," he says. "She just found out she has HIV. It's, like, the first really serious thing to happen in our group of friends." But Whibley seems horrified at the suggestion that Sum 41 are growing up, even though they're now all homeowners.

At halftime, a few kids sneak over for autographs, prompting the Knicks' official celebrity photographer to ask for a few shots. "Uh . . . " he asks Whibley, "would you mind putting the beer down for a minute?"

After the Knicks game, sum 41 head for the Paramount Hotel bar. They fondly remember this place -- the last time they were here, they got thrown out when they got drunk and tried to sneak one of the lobby chairs up to their room. This is also where the band stayed on McCaslin's twenty-first birthday. "That was the night I puked on Nikka Costa," he remembers. "We were at this MTV party, I was on mushrooms, and the whole room started spinning. Nikka and I were talking about music, and suddenly I just went bleeewaaaagh on her leg. I felt terrible about it. But I think she understood." Not all their drug experiences have been happy ones. "Poppers," says Jocz with a shudder. "Amyl nitrite. I was hanging with this drug dealer, sampling a bit of everything he had: a little coke, a little E, the whole thing. And he had these poppers. You inhale it, and it makes you feel so good. And it screwed me up for months. I was stuttering, forgetting what I was about to say. Messed up my head."

Despite all this road debauchery, McCaslin and Baksh stay faithful to their long-term girlfriends. So how do they hold it down on the road? Says Baksh, "Thanks to Vivid Video and Private Productions, I hold it down pretty good." When they ask me where I'm from, and I tell them Boston, they look at each other and laugh. "The mobile strip club!" Jocz says. "That was Boston. We were at this boring industry party, and these two girls came up to us, and we could tell that these girls were not music-business people. They were . . . " "Them," McCaslin says.

"They were them," Jocz agrees. "One said, 'Hello, my name is Isis, and this is my friend Ecstasy.' And I figured, 'Hey, an Egyptian goddess and a designer drug. We're good to go!' " Shockingly, the girls turned out to be strippers, and they lured the boys into their customized Winnebago, which had a pole and strobe lights. "We rode the Winnebago all around Boston. Isis was great -- she was in the middle of giving me a dance when she got this call on her cell phone. It was her boyfriend, and I guess he was totally pissing her off, because she took her heels and started jamming them into me so hard. She was pissed at her boyfriend and taking out all her frustrations on me. And I'm into that."

After a couple of beers, two old friends from back home stop by. One is their road videographer, Shamus; the other is Matt, the drummer from Avril Lavigne's band, which is in town for a show and staying at the same hotel. Matt and Shamus have just come from a local deli, where they bought their own beers to sneak into the bar.

All the guys crowd around a table, cracking private jokes about high school. There's some gossip about Canadian bands they hate, and then they start making plans for when they're all back in town for Christmas, sounding like college kids planning for winter break. Everyone wants to be home by the twenty-third, because that's when Whibley's mom throws her Christmas party. Her parties are famous -- last year, an old metalhead hit on McCaslin's sixteen-year-old sister and then told McCaslin's mom to fuck off when she intervened.

Sum 41 may be raising hell around the globe, but the party doesn't even stop when they get home. As Whibley says proudly, "Our parents party harder than we do."

Lonely Financial Zone
Walking Tapes for Feet Already Dead
by Rob Sheffield

I just moved to New York a year ago, because I needed to get away from Virginia, where the shadow of death was too heavy for me to live with anymore. So I moved right under the World Trade Center. It was a strange neighborhood, completely deserted at night, empty on weekends, and I would walk for miles up and down the river, and then sit under the twin towers in the dark by the fountain, listening to my walking mix tapes, almost all of which have some version of "Marquee Moon" or another. (Portland July '78: still my fave.) For some reason I never connected my new neighborhood with Jonathan Richman's "Lonely Financial Zone," a song I loved as a teenage boy, until I heard Jonathan sing it (with no preamble or postscript) at the Bowery Ballroom, October 12, 2001, to a dead fucking silent room. "I have walked by the buildings, I have walked by them all. I have walked by the skyscrapers, lonely and dark. In the lonely financial zone, by the sea, I have walked under moon and stars."

This dead neighborhood is now one of the world's most famous places, congested with visitors night and day who line up for blocks, a Knotts Berry Farm for terrorism. The smell of the dead is still in the air and on my skin: blood on the tracks, dust in the wind. I still find it pretty difficult to live with, to tell the truth. The places where I had fun listening to music this year are rubble now, and I dream of them when I play the songs I used to put on my walking tapes: Black Box Recorder's "Goodnight Kiss," the Pernice Brothers' "Working Girls," Weezer's "Simple Pages," Stephen Malkmus's "Church on White," and so many more.

As a ride-or-die slut for the secular, tawdry, carnal, and promiscuous vitality of the pop world, I would love to be able to claim that said pop world was offering any sort of resistance to the theocrats and their priggish fellow travelers currently attacking democracy from within and without. But I can't. Pimping has never been easier: John Lennon's ass pimps vodka (hey, it's the least John could do, after everything alcohol did for him), Robbie Robertson pimps Supertramp for the Gap (goodbye stranger, it's been nice), and rock-star benefit concerts pimp firefighters as the new Tibetan monks.

American culture is going through a phase of resembling the More Science High School from the just reissued old Firesign Theater records, a place where increased spending opportunities mean harder work for everyone—and more of it, too!—as long as we get in step with the voices of the feet already dead in the service of their country, so God bless Vespucci-Land. But on the bright side, music sales went down for the first time in 20 years, a consumer revolt that's as good a reason as any to be proud you're an American. The last year pop music was this awful, 1990, there was a Bush occupying the capital, bombs over Baghdad, loads of prog-metal angst on rock radio, loads of tinny teen disco on MTV, avant-dance and indie-rock undergrounds overrun by bloodless dilettante prudes. But the following year was a palindrome: 1991. So I have my unreasonable hopes for 2002. Especially since we already know from Geddy Lee that 2112 is gonna suck hard.

LMAO, well, right after DMB's first studio album came out, it became a well-known fact that RS fixes their reviews ahead of time. They've become such a pansyass magazine that they cater to the pop generation (hello? Their past year of covers has been dominated by scantily-clad pop princesses). x 10. I am currently reading it for the gossip (Gwenyth & Chris!:() and to laugh my ass off at Rob Sheffield.

The Year in Movies
Best and worst! Winners and losers! Scandals and scams!

Did you see more than 400 movies in 365 days? I did. It's like Jackass: The Movie, when Johnny Knoxville's boys speed downhill in a shopping cart while cannons fire garbage at them. The trick is to grab a gold nugget or two (Gangs of New York, Far From Heaven) before you're buried in crap. Here goes.

Best You Can Say for Scum-Sucking Hollywood in 2002
The studios scammed us good. Never before have film freaks paid so much to sit on our big, fat geek asses at U.S. multiplexes. A record $9 billion in admissions is expected.

Worst You Can Say About Us as Audiences
Most of what we lined up for sucked syphilitic donkey dick. What -- you thought Scooby-Doo advanced film as an art form?

Good for Business
Spider-man snagged $404 million: Number One for the year and Number Five on the all-time box-office charts. At press time, twenty films had grossed more than $100 million, even Attack of the Clones, MiB2 and XXX. God help us.

Good for the Soul
Gangs of New York, the $110 million Martin Scorsese epic, had more lousy pre-release buzz than Titanic. But, surprise, Scorsese turns the 1860s battle between immigrant gangs (Leonardo DiCaprio's Amsterdam Vallon reps the Irish) and nativists (Daniel Day-Lewis' Bill the Butcher reps their magnetic leader) into a brutal, brilliant summation of his career as a chronicler of America's blood lust across the racial divide. Pick at its flaws if you must, but no 2002 film reached higher or achieved more.

Good for Nothing
Employing Madonna as an actress; everything in Sweet Home Alabama except Reese Witherspoon; Vin Diesel's ballooning self-love; cop-out endings as in Minority Report; plot points that make no sense (if water kills the aliens in Signs, what would happen to the movie if it rained?).

Guilty Pleasure
Jackass: the movie: OK, it's no fun watching Johnny Knoxville use an envelope to slice between his fingers and toes. I have this thing about paper cuts. Maybe you'll hurl watching the guys -- they're nude so often the film damn near qualifies as gay porn -- barf, defecate, shove toys up their butts and lick a snow cone infused with urine. But the scenes with the rental car, the wasabi and the car wash are hilarious. Spike Jonze, who directed the whip-smart Adaptation, produced Jackass and appears in it. So if he's not feeling guilty, why should we?

Best Freak
Spider-man won cheers, but the prize for hisses (far more fun) goes to Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. With veins popping in his head, elongated arms and legs, and a voice that sounds like Linda Blair in The Exorcist, this nightmare vision of a smack addict owes much to the physical and vocal talents of Andy Serkis, who acted the role in a wired bodysuit that enabled animators to copy his movements onto a computer.

New Stars Rising
Kieran Culkin giving the breakthrough performance of 2002 in Igby Goes Down; Naomi Watts, the critics' darling of last year's Mulholland Dr., headlining a smash hit with The Ring; Orlando Bloom, an archer with style in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers; Viggo Mortensen growing ever more kingly in the same film; Brittany Murphy amping Eminem's sex appeal in 8 Mile; Jake Gyllenhaal (The Good Girl) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Secretary) becoming the hottest acting siblings since John and Joan Cusack.

New Stars Falling
Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman, stalling their careers in a stilted Star Wars love story; Josh Hartnett, the Pearl Harbor stud, showing no flair for comedy in 40 Days and 40 Nights; Cameron Diaz, merely miscast in Gangs of New York, unbecomingly smug in The Sweetest Thing; Heath Ledger and Kate Hudson going down with The Four Feathers.

Loser of the Year
Winona Ryder. It's not just that she got convicted of shoplifting, it's that her taste in stolen items was so much better than her choice in movie roles. Mr. Deeds with Adam Sandler and Simone in the same year? Jeez!

Off With Their Heads
Look, if Winona is doing community service, other film offenders should be doing time: six months for Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones for walking through their roles in Men in Black II; a year for Kevin Costner for being a pompous ass in Dragonfly; and life for Madonna and director husband Guy Ritchie unless they promise never to work together onscreen again after Swept Away.

From Music to Acting (Champ Division)
Eminem in 8 mile. with the right director (Curtis Hanson) and the right role (basically, himself), he scored big. Runners-up: Ice Cube as a softy in Barbershop and Mick Jagger as a pimp in The Man From Elysian Fields.

From Music to Acting (Chump Division)
Britney Spears in Crossroads. The best you could say about her acting debut is: not as embarrassing as Mariah Carey in Glitter.

Best Five Movies You Didn't See in 2002
While you flushed cash on Scooby-doo, despite the advertised presence of Freddie Prinze Jr., you missed Michael Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People, with Steve Coogan in a fireball turn as Tony Wilson, the founder of Factory Records; Bill Paxton's seriously scary Frailty; Burr Steers' piercing Igby Goes Down; Paul Greengrass' Bloody Sunday, a volcanic re-creation of a January 1972 massacre in Northern Ireland; and Zacharias Kunuk's The Fast Runner, a stunning exploration of an Inuit blood feud.

Best Greek Bearing Gifts
Nia Vardalos, the star and screenwriter of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, hardly expected her small, thin-budget ($5 million) family farce about a dowdy Greek girl who weds a studly WASP (John Corbett) to gross more than a few bucks, never mind $200 million. The snobs dismissed the film as a glorified sitcom; now it's the smash romantic comedy of all time.

Hot Movie Toy
A dirty little secret among Harry Potter fans is the vibrating broomstick: a $19.99 toy that gives girls such a tingle between their legs that Mattel has discontinued it, giving new meaning to J.K. Rowling's title Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Playing Against Type
A deglamorizing putty nose may help Nicole Kidman win the Oscar for Best Actress by, well, a nose. In The Hours, Kidman is almost unrecognizable as the frumpy Virginia Woolf. And the usually nonthreatening sweetie Renee Zellweger is winning early raves for playing a murderous singing, dancing sexpot in Chicago. What's next? Britney as a crack whore? J. Lo as a nun?

Stuff for the Time Capsule?
Eminem rapping with a boxer's energy as he goes three rounds at the end of 8 Mile; the first look at Daniel Day-Lewis -- a performance that will be talked about for years -- as he prepares for war in Gangs of New York; a transcendent Julianne Moore facing desertion as a 1950s housewife in Far From Heaven; Paul Newman, crowning his career in Road to Perdition, ordering a hit on a man he loved like a son; Diane Lane, alone on a train, reliving the heat of adulterous sex in Unfaithful; Michael Caine, his face ravaged by lost love, in The Quiet American; the lyrical eroticism of Y Tu Mama Tambien; Michael Constantine using Windex as a cure for everything (even headaches) in My Big Fat Greek Wedding; Jack Nicholson crying like a baby in About Schmidt; the climactic battle in The Two Towers; Martin Scorsese energizing every frame of Gangs of New York. Know what? The most vital director alive has never won an Oscar. He keeps losing to actors who dabble in directing, even -- yikes! -- Kevin Costner (Dances With Wolves). There's talk Scorsese may lose this time to Denzel Washington's directing debut (Antwone Fisher). If so, that beats all contenders on 2002's Movie Hall of Shame.

Thanks Hackie. Nice stuff. I enjoyed it very much :). Now I really want to see Gangs in New York. Being a diehard Scorsese fan, I normally watch his film religiously. But this one is different. The only thing that stands between me and the theatre is Leo Dicaprio. I don't know what Scorsese saw in him. And seeing those clips of him making out with Diaz is just so...I donno. Morning! :wavey:

Still don't have much time, but I did want to say at least hi and play some catch-up. :(

MOBY!!!     That's horrible! But I don't think it's a big mistery as to why it happene. Some people just can't stand a polite, friendly pacifict, who refuses to fight back, and they just want to beat the shit out of him. They might even be Eminem fans who have taken their idol's words to heart and felt they had to fulfil his sick urges. I'm sorry, I don't generally have that much against Eminem and some of his songs are even great, but his stupid verbal fights with Moby were just pathetic. I mean while excepting some MTV music award, he said: "Keep booing little girl. I WILL hit a man with glasses!" And then he really was booed. Moby wasn't even booing as he explained later, so it was just a pathetic outburst of testosterone aggression. All evening he acted like he wanted to beat the shit out of Moby, so it's no surprise that some of his idiotic fans go out and do the dirty work for him. I guess they think it's fun. But that's just my speculation. I hope they catch the bastards and throw them in jail! :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

Anyway, Moby is amazing and his on-line journal entries regarding the incident have clearly shown what a wonderful, intelligent and kind person he is. I admire how he retained his sense of humor right after the attack happened. It just shows why he can cope with this life better than most of us. And his sense of humor just kills me. :D He definitely deserves to be in the top 100 on your husband list TH.

Thanks for the articles TH, especially the movie review of the year by Peter Travers. Funny! :D But like Vera said, Leonardo DiCaprio is a huge obstacle to my potential enjoyment of that film, so I can't say that I'm eager to see it. And after reading that Cameron Diaz was miscast, I have to wonder about his casting skills at this point.

TH, you gotta see this! If you like caption threads that is. Some of them are just hilarious and they get better and better. :D :D :D It might take you a while to download the page though, because the thread is huge.

Moving on to Pearl Jam... TH, you were probably just unlucky with the connection yesterday, like I was the day before when I could get into the site for half a day even though I tried all the time. I managed to download all of the remaining songs from the Pittsburgh concert yesterday! :bounce: That means I downloaded 24 songs total. :D My connection was wavering as well and the songs kept withering down to 0.0 all the time, so I think what you were experiencing is normal. I just left them be and they bounced back eventually. I did download all day though, without a break, since I was sitting at the computer all the time.

Hitman, I have an important question for you. Can you please tell me how long the Pittsburgh and Lisbon concerts are, so I can decide how to burn them? You probably have that info on your cds. I'd be very grateful for that. :)

And speaking of lenght... TH, can you please tell me how long the songs The Last Stop and The Dreaming Tree from Before These Crowded Streets? I seem to have downloaded some funky versions that I believe have been cut short. That's one of the problems with Kazaa. You have to check everything because people with put up just about any old crap. A lot of them mess up the titles or the artist, and I even read about people putting up their own stupid songs under the name of well-known song. Anyway, I would much appreciate the info so I can find the right version. :)

Hmm, Im not sure what you mean...
All the shows should be burned on two cds.

Pittsburgh should be recorded like this:
CD ONE - From 01-Even Flow to 15-RVM
Total length 70:44, but I forgot to cut the transitions between songs to zero. So it might end a little less when you do that... :(
CD TWO - From 16-I got shit to 29-Baba O´Riley
Total length 65:55, with transitions cut to zero.

It makes a total of 136 minutes 39 seconds of music

Lisbon goes like:
CD ONE - From 01- Of the girl to 16-Wishlist
Total length 70:57 with zero transitions
CD TWO - From 17- Thin Air to 30-Yellow Ledbetter
Total length 69:22 with zero transitions.

It makes a total of 140 minutes 19 seconds of music

:bounce: I hope this helps. :wavey:

Anyway, Moby is amazing and his on-line journal entries regarding the incident have clearly shown what a wonderful, intelligent and kind person he is. I admire how he retained his sense of humor right after the attack happened. It just shows why he can cope with this life better than most of us. And his sense of humor just kills me. :D He definitely deserves to be in the top 100 on your husband list TH.

Hi, Layla :) Wish we didn't keep missing each other :(

As for the incident with Mobes, well . . . . first speculation was that it was some of Eminem's posse  Eminem has really bottomed out with his "grudges", first picking on Moby for no reason then trying to pick a fight with a hand puppet!:rolleyes:

And he is growing every closer to the top :) LOL, he's such a sweetheart, he gets made fun of in the press all the time (like when he started a book club) but he still makes millions of women melt into puddles, so he must be doing something right :D

Well, I'm none to pleased about Leo being in the middle of such a striking film either, but I'm hoping it will be good. I simply adore Martin Scorsese's work  I probably won't see it in the theaters as movies are so damn expensive here (I rarely go to the theater), so we'll see how it plays out. I think that if it hasn't come out yet, it will very soon. I thought they were pushing for a release date but I have no idea, really.

I just left them be and they bounced back eventually. I did download all day though, without a break, since I was sitting at the computer all the time.

I let it download all day and all night last night, and I only have 1 complete song :( I think I'm doing something wrong :( Last night it just cut off downloading, so when I woke up this morning I had to restart it -- and I had automatic DL selected :(:(:( I'm sooooooooooo jealous of you guys . . . but I thought there were 29 songs on the Pittsburgh concert?

And speaking of lenght... TH, can you please tell me how long the songs The Last Stop and The Dreaming Tree from Before These Crowded Streets? I seem to have downloaded some funky versions that I believe have been cut short.

The Last Stop is 6 min, 57 sec
The Dreaming Tree is 8 min, 48 sec full, or 8 min 15 sec without the added extra on the end of the song -- there are some interesting little filler pieces on the end of most songs on that album :)

It's windy with pissing rain out there, typical fall weather in Vancouver. But it's still pretty warm, so it's not too bad. And I'm in a pretty good mood :). Gosh, only a week and a half away from X'mas. I think RF and Layla talked about holidays being tough for some ppl, which is truly my case. But I guess when it's actually there, I'll be so busy that I would probably forget about the worries. Speaking of the holiday, I better get the turkey before I totally forget.

Sorry Hackie, I missed your 6000th and forgot to congrats you yesterday. So

:bounce: CONGRATS TO YOUR 6000TH :bounce:

You are the Queen of so many things, including the linguistics knowledge. I missed the conversation, but I'm very interested. I still don't quite understand what a linguist study. I used to have a roommate who studied Linguistics but she said it's not the actual languages that she's studying. She didn't have chance to explain to me, cos I moved out soon. We got along well, but couldn't agree on one thing, the temperature of the room. She moved from Brazil to Texas and I moved from Canada to Texas. I can barely survived the heat and she complained about feeling chilly in the room even without aircond. It got to a point that I was so sick bcos of the heat and couldn't eat for days. So we have to split. Anyway, I kinda missed her though cos she's a very knowledgable person.

Well, seems like I'm chatty today but no one's around. Oh well, anyhow, everyone have a very nice weekend. :wavey:

Wow, what a nice place to go for field trip. I visited the Metropolitan many years ago. I barely remembered anything but I cannot forget the Jackson Pollock I saw there, cos I took a picture in front of the "Autumn Rhythm" painting. I'm a big fan of Jackson Pollock. But other than that, don't remember anything else that I saw there. I would love to visit there again though.

And I have a surprise for Layla, Hackie and any other one interested in Audioslave. I found a very cool link. A video of Set it off, and like 4 mp3 of live performances from MTV2. The Mp3s are from the show they did right after. ;)

! :( Damn, I'm so bored today and I missed a chance to talk to you guys?

Anyway, I can still answer your questiion :) A linguist studies the components of language (phonemes, morphemes, etc. as well as perscreiptive & descriptive rules of languages -- the "rules" of the language and how we actually use it). A psycholinguist studies the acquisition of language in humans and sometimes, other animals. Why are we as a species so special, to have this system of communication? How do we get it? The big debate was between Noam Chomsky and B.F. Skinner as to how children learn language -- Skinner believed it was through a system of rewards and punishments; that is, parents reward their children for saying something correctly and punish them via correction when they say something incorrectly. Skinner was the leader of the Behavorist movement in psychology, which was purely based on observable behavior. Chomsky (also a huge political activist) studied children with their parents and found that doesn't actually happen -- parents don't correct their childrens' speech but pay attention to whether or not the meaning of the sentence is true. Well, basically in a nutshell ;)

Hi everyone! :wavey:

Don't mind me, I'm in a miserable mood. This morning I chipped my front tooth. I have no idea how it happened, but a chunk of my tooth fell off, but not at the bottom of the tooth, which I would sort of understand, but up there near the gums. As if I didn't have enough work to do, I'll have to go to the dentist tomorrow and I have no idea if the tooth can be saved at all.   Damn it, it's my front tooth! :fiery: Well, not the first one, the second from the middle. I don't know the English term for it. :o I'm really scared, I don't want to lose it! :(

On top of that I had to co-entertain annoying visitors that showed up unannounced and then wouldn't leave for hours, preventing me from doing any work.

Ok, I'll stop bitching now. ;) I hope y'all are having a much better Sunday. :)

The Last Stop is 6 min, 57 sec
The Dreaming Tree is 8 min, 48 sec full, or 8 min 15 sec without the added extra on the end of the song -- there are some interesting little filler pieces on the end of most songs on that album :)

Thanks for the info. :) I managed to find the right songs now. My version of The Dreaming Tree was cut short at 5:26.

I hear your downloading has improved a bit, hope you had more success later in the day. Yes, there are 29 songs. I meant that I downloaded the remaining 24 songs in one very lucky day. ;) The first 5 I downloaded the day before.

So, Layla you finished downloading, how does it sound??

I have another link to give you all btw. Let me find it...

Oh, I haven't even had the time to burn it yet, let alone listen to it. :( I'll listen to it as soon as I can afford a decent break. I don't want to listen to it while working, it would ruin it for me. ;)

Thanks for the Audioslave link. :bounce: I'll check it out later and I'll definitely download those live songs! :D

Yeah, I admitted as much. :o ;)

Hmmm, this is very strange. Hitman or someone else, the 5 Pearl Jam songs I downloaded the first day, before I installed Get Right, are mysteriously in MPEG format. I don't know much about this format, so please help me out. My cd-burning software doesn't recognize this format. :( Is there any way I can convert it to MP3, or should I just download those 5 songs again?

That might have been some weird radio edit. Hahaha, that's the only way songs from that album were played on the radio, and they truncated them in weird ways, usually by taking out the long instrumentals in the middle :(

And as for downloading, well, those 3 songs are still sitting at over 90% done  so I'm hoping for another surge this afternoon or something. I really really really want to get them all downloaded before I go home and lose my beautiful ultra-fast connection (and all day connection, too).

Oh yeah, I'd believe that. You can't get much more emo than with lyrics like "she f****** hates me". I'm not being sarcastic either. :p

I just love the video for Control. When he riches in and throws the keys into the puddle of mud, and then walks away with a giant smirk on his face - that's just classic. I think it's safe to say he has issues with women. ;)

ANyhow - about general messages - I seriously think/wish they would create a 'pervs are us' forum (maybe with a better title) where all that crap could go. I can deal with "hottie lists" and what not, but when they are comparing certain body parts in about 23413242 different threads it's just TOO much *sigh* I mean really - have people not learned to contain their thoughts yet? I'm not perfect, I have impure thoughts as well on occasion - but excuse me for being normal aand containing them like other restrained human beings!

Okay, that is my rant for today ;)

I see the world. Feel the chill.
Which way to go? Windowsill.
I see the words on a rocking horse of time.
I see the verse in the rain.

Oh, dear dad can you see me now?
I am myself like you somehow.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me.
I'll hold the pain. Release me.

Oh, dear dad can you see me now?
I am myself like you somehow.
I'll wait up in the dark for you to speak to me.
How I've opened up. Release me.
Release me. Release me dad. Release me.

ONe is about Schalken, the other is just stats about the tournaments per surface breakdown.

Neither are controversial, neither have half naked men, both took some time, and both will die immediately because hardly anyone on this message board gives an ass about anything either than ass anymore.

Hmmm, I still can't get into the site, so more patience is required. :(

I don't know how to rename the file. I can only change its name, no the tag. I think I will have to download them again, if I can only find the key to that damn site. :p No offense to the site, it's a splendid site. :D

Errr, my first reaction was a big huh? Who's that? Then I checked on the internet and realized he's a character from the new Star Wars movies which I haven't seen yet. I have the first episode taped but I just can't bring myself to watch it. I was a huge fan of the original Star Wars movies mind you. But the trailers were sooooo boring and disappointing that I'm not sure I'm gonna like the movies.

Anyway, I wasn't making fun of anyone LOL. That's how I talk sometimes. ;)

Hi guys :wavey:

Hope everyone has a good day.

Didn't read much of the past post so I'm not sure what's going on. But I'm sorry that Layla has to suffer that tooth problem. I feel you, gal. I had all my 3 front teeth chipped at various occasion. So I can understand the fear of losing a tooth, especially a front one. I'm glad your dentist were able to help save them, hope you feel better now.

And Hackie, good luck to your last exam. :)

Wow, you guys sounded having a lot of fun downloading like crazy. I still haven't get my soundcard fixed. My friend came over to help but he still couldn't figure out which driver is required, too damn many to choose and he opened the tower box without being able to find the brand of my soundcard. This is getting so frustrating.

And then my cooking range were on fire the other day. The element broke so when I tried to turn it on, it caught a little fire. Luckily, I survived.

I had my share of bad luck in one week. Yesterday, I suffered a severe stomach ache, some food poisoning. AHHHHHHHHHH, just want to scream. Hope I get better luck next year. :(

Now, I have to go look for the part to fix my stove so that it will work when the X'mas cooking begins. Enough of me rant.

Hey, Becca, I like your tourney stats, wherever you find them. Just meant to look up exactly how many weeks of clay tourney in a year cos that's what it really came down to. Maybe later when I solve my stove problem.

Okay. Bye for now. :wavey:

Funny, I too almost had a fire on my stove a couple of weeks ago when I turned on the element, it caught fire but I managed to extinguish it without an extinguisher!! But it still doesn't work, as do many things in my place -- all my lights are burning out inside and out -- very safe! Thanks for the pic. He's so lovely:hearts: :hearts: :hearts: and this expression, with his tongue there, it's my favorite:drool:. You are right, that IS a cure for everything, and so is his tennis, that's why I've been watching a lot of his tapes lately.

My teeth. Well, that 3 front teeth at the bottom, the top was all chipped off. A big chuck of the back of the teeth were off but the front is still there. So when you looked at them, they are wavely. I mean, the top aren't a straight line. The dentist tried to put fillings on the top to replace the chipped part but there's no support so the fillings fell off very quickly. The interesting part is that since all the 3 teeth are chipped, so they are indeed at the same length now, and they are kinda smaller than the big teeth that's next to them. Can't really noticed unless you look intentively. But when that big chuck fell into my month, I was so scared, I didn't know how bad it was and it felt like the whole tooth fell off. :o

Geez, we have more in common than we can imagine. There's more things in my place that's not working than those that's working . A simple life? You mean candle lights and no microwave...no no no, I can't live without a microwave:o.

Okay, a wild guess of that surprise in your mail, something about Rogi?! :D what's that? Can you tell us? I'm really curious now.
Hehehe, I also treated myself with a present, a Davis Cup 2000 year book:D . I just recently discovered that there's such a year book and so I went online to buy it from Amazon couple of weeks ago. I should get it in my mail this week. I would be so happy when I see that. :)

Oh, Vera, that's a nice treat! I have that book! I also have the DC01 book but I don't think a 2002 one is out (yet). Hope there will be one. I also have the French book L'Annee du Tennis 2000 and 2001 -- they just go over the year -- slams mostly and a few other TMS tourneys. You'll like the DC00 book!

I'm too late for you to check the movie thread!

See you maybe late tomorrow -- I probably won't be around much. nite nite!

   Slow Day!

Not very often I can say good night and good afternoon on the same page :( . Oh well, Hackie's moving day today as she's going home. And I guess everyone else's busy. I wish my DC book arrives soon so I can kill my day drooling on those pics.

I think some of you are Capricorns here, so let's read the Yahoo horoscope for today :D :

Delve deep into your creative nature, dear Capricorn. Break loose from your tether and escape up into the clouds for a while. Gain a greater perspective on your situation and you will find that things are much less daunting than you originally thought. Don't get so caught up with figuring out how something is going to get done. Just concentrate on what it is exactly that you want. The details will work out by themselves.

They seems to always know what I want to hear:D.
Time to go for lunch. Well, everyone, have a great day :wavey:
