Oh, damn, I was afraid of that. On one hand, Costa is so bad on hard courts it's laughable.

On the other hand, he snatched the RG crown away from Juan Carlos this year. And, Andy went on to win the junior US Open in 2000.

Sending good vibes to Juan Carlos.

Now I really do have to go to sleep. Like I said, I hope they don't continue until tomorrow. But if they do, I hope to find some good news when I wake up, or I'll have to wake you guys in the middle of the night to cheer me up lol.

Night night and sweet dreams :wavey:

Before I go to bed, I'll just sneak another peek at that gorgeous pic of Ferrero. ;)

I'd love some tea. I actually feel a little cold. Must be the early morning hours.

This is for us, for being such a loyal bunch. http://www.smilies.org/basesmilies/icon_super.gif

Right now there is a 70% chance of rain, but it looks like it's mostly going to be tomorrow morning. By evening, for sure, it will be gone.

Tuesday there's only a 10% chance of rain.

Layla

You're going to the US Open tomorrow Leo? Yahoooo for you. :D I'll do my best to drive away the rain then. ;) But only for tomorrow. Let it rain out today.

Layla

Mooooooorning!!! http://www.smilies-world.de/Smilies/Smilies_klein_1/coffeecup.gif :D

Turns out I was wrong about yesterday. Yesterday was not such an important day after all. TODAY IS!!!! :bounce: May all my faves win today.

Juan Carlos, Alex, Tim, Greg, Tommy, Lindsay, Monica and Kim, if you can hear me, go get them!!! And good luck to Guga, Sjeng, Juju, the Srebotnik and Bryan team, and Mike and Bob.

And btw, :fiery: @ Juanqui's court again. How come Younes and Ferreira end up playing on grandstand but Juanqui is dumped somewhere in the middle of a prairie. I'm so sick of this, I really am. I'm gonna write to all the tournament directors everywhere and give them a piece of my mind.

But regardless of this unfortunate situation, I have nothing but good vibes for Juanqui. http://www.smilies.org/basesmilies/gris bizoo.gif

http://www.smilies-world.de/Smilies/nichtani_1/queenserenity.gif

I did have a decent night's sleep but I was shaking so bad when I was trying to switch on my computer and check the scores. Phew. I was so relieved the matches were postponed. Now I can actually follow them live. :D

And last but not least... the rain dance. I will repeat the most successful dance I perfomed a few days ago. It worked instantly. This is for Leo, so he doesn't have to wait in rain at the grounds, while we are comfortably tucked up in our cozy apartments. Not that we're not all jealous of you though, cause we are. ;)

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 12:28 PM
Morning, Layla :wavey:

Thankies for the dance, I'm sure it will work ;)

More good news: Pete has fallen to #37 for the moment (I think). That means all of my favorite players, with the exception of Ancic & Gasquet, are ranked above him! :D :D

But, alas, it will be my turn to worry, as the match will (hopefully) have started while I'm in class.

C'mon, Juan Carlos!! Show them you're better than Court 7!!!

Layla

Hi TH! :wavey:

Lol about Pete. But he's not out of the tournament yet, so that might change.

I just read the weather forecast and it's very optimistic. Rain is forecast for every hour of the day until the evening. I hope they're wrong. They obviously haven't seen me do the rain dance. :D

Well, we didn't have much of a summer in August here. It was rainy and cold and I spent most of it indoors so I won't even notice when it will be gone. But then again I don't have to go to school like you. :( Hoping for a hot September though. :D

OMG, Eurosport has gone on a Haas spree. They're showing replays of all his USO matches. Someone noticed that Eurosport is obssessed with Tommy Haas. I guess he was right. Errrr, I'm afraid you'll have to kiss ILR yourself. Sorry. :p

Yes, I spent 10 days in New York - best days of my life. I completely fell in love with it :hearts:, head over heels, and I didn't expect to, because big cities are usually not my thing. But Central Park is the heart and soul of NY for me and I loved everything else too. I was staying in Queens, which was excellent. I would give everything in the world to be able to live in NY. The moment I got off the plain I felt right at home there. And I've never seen so many beautiful, truly beautiful (in every respect) people on the streets. I don't need a house on Manhattan (although I wouldn't say no to a view of Central Park), I would be quite happy to settle down in Brooklyn or Queens.

Ok I'll stop drooling now, at least publicly.

Hi, again guys :wavey:

The rain is looking up, never you fear. I posted the weather forecast in the US Open forum.

Layla, I assure that I'd rather watch Tommy Haas's matches than Agassi/Sampras/Roddick's, which is what I'm sure they're showing on US television

I must say, though, this is what they deserve for being so fucking stupid with the scheduling. They are total morons, and they just removed all doubt from anyone's mind.

Indeed, I have noticed that it's rained at almost every slam this year. I think it rained a little at Australia, that was so long ago that I hardly remember! It rained a lot at RG, which I thought was strange, and then hardly at all at Wimbly (compared to what we usually see). And now, at the Open, it has already rained out a whole day of play and is seriously delaying the schedule. Of course, Serena is already through, so guess who has the best shot at winning the ladies' singles crown?

Vera
09-02-2002, 08:30 PM
Hi Layla, and everyone out there.

I'm bored out of my mind while waiting for the rain to stop in NY. I was pretty happy that it rained out yesterday cos I wasn't able to watch any at the day time. But the timing of the rain in the evening is just aweful, right at the deuce when JC's serving. Since then, I've been thinking hard, is JC a slow starter? does he had any problem getting started in a match? Man, I really hope he comes out firing whenever the play resume. I haven't been able to sleep well the past 2 days worrying for him. Pls do well, Juanqui.

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 08:31 PM
It looks like the rain is almost over. Seriously, I've never seen a land-based storm move so slowly!! Grr :fiery:

Perhaps there will be a few night matches. But I'm not holding my breath.

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 08:41 PM
::sigh:: There are two flood watches/warnings out in Queens County until 5:15 pm (about 20 mins). This is seriously not looking up :(

Layla
09-02-2002, 08:51 PM
Hi Vera! :wavey:

I know how you feel. I'm worried sick.

But again. I don't want him to play at night after two full days of rain and me not being able to cheer him on. This is so depressing.

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 08:56 PM
Ladies, we can all be worried sick & depressed together, because we all know we aren't going anywhere until we have some sort of word on his match ;)

He has been moved to first match on Court 7. I suppose the reason they won't move him from that court is because that's the court he started on and they don't like to move matches in the middle. But that's giving them a LOT of credit, which I'm not sure they deserve.

Vera
09-02-2002, 09:00 PM
Seriously though, if tomorrow's gonna be sunny and warmer, I much rather his match to be delayed til then. I don't mind waiting as long as he can play in a favorable condition.

Layla
09-02-2002, 09:01 PM
They surely don't deserve that credit TH. I'm still not over the fact that Younes and Wayne get to play on grandstand but Juanqui never gets a break. Don't they ever dare to complain he is not charismatic enough to be noticed. Put him on a televised court and he freaking will be. :fiery: That court doesn't even have a netcam as opposed to say court 10 or 11. GRRRRRR

Layla
09-02-2002, 09:02 PM
I agree with Vera. I want him to play tomorrow in better conditions not after waiting around for two whole days getting frustrated and bored to death.

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 09:06 PM
I agree with you on all counts, Layla (and Vera). It is supposed to be partly/mostly sunny tomorrow, with no rain.

But since he is first on now, he might not get that luxury :(

Nacho
09-02-2002, 09:07 PM
Raindrops keep falling on my head...

Layla
09-02-2002, 09:11 PM
Do you really think rain will stop in time for play to resume TH? I'm asking cause you seem to know a lot about meteorology.

Vera
09-02-2002, 09:11 PM
So I thought Court 11 is bad enough:rolleyes:
You know, it makes me sick that everyone is putting him down: picking him to lose, downplaying his game and now putting him in a lesser court. He needs a major boost by kicking the ass of these ppl, he should win the whole thing to make these ppl look stupid.

Vera
09-02-2002, 09:14 PM
Oh, they are beginning to dry the court now.

Where's TennisHack by the way?

TH, you said we'd worry together!!!!!

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 10:19 PM
Layla: obviously, play has resumed, and by my estimation, his match should begin any minute now--it's been almost an hour since the rain stopped.

I worried myself; I have a ton of work to do but I know I won't be able to do anything until I follow his match. This is very nervewracking.

So I guess he'll start soon..

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 10:28 PM
I don't use the scoreboard, I just watch the matches in progress page and refresh it about ten billion times :)

The note on the website said play would begin 1/2 hour on Ashe after the rain stopped, and an hour on all outer courts. I wonder what's taking them so long

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 10:29 PM
Okay, WTF is this? Play is suspended on Armstrong court?

Layla
09-02-2002, 10:32 PM
That's still there from yesterday. it just meand they haven't started yet.

Why don't you use the scoreboard. It tells you everything.

Layla
09-02-2002, 10:33 PM
Btw, it's working now so I'm cool (well as cool as I can be under the circumstances)

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 10:36 PM
Well, none of the other postponed matches are up on the matches in progress page, so I'm confused

I don't use the scoreboard because 1) it doesn't like my browser and 2) the info comes a little quicker when you press refresh. Maybe it's just me, tho.

Layla
09-02-2002, 10:39 PM
Well this scoreboard is pretty quick. A lot quicker than the one at Wimby. Plus you get to see all the stats as they change with every point. :)

The other matches haven't started yet. Pete and Greg are warming up.

Layla
09-02-2002, 10:40 PM
Lindsay won the first set 6-3! :bounce: :D

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 10:40 PM
I used the scoreboard during RG, it was a very nervewracking way to follow a match.

But I have since updated my browsers and I'd have to use IE to use the scoreboard, and I've already got quite a few windows open, so . . . I'll just use the cheap way, LOL :)

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 10:41 PM

I'm anxious too. Since he definitely will be playing, he might as well start while I'm still up.

Chloe le Bopper
09-02-2002, 10:46 PM
you could maybe catch the first set Layla :)

That is if they get the damn court dry in the next 2 years

Layla
09-02-2002, 10:47 PM
Why on earth don't they use covers?

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 10:49 PM

Court 7 isn't important enough to get a cover  It's not a show court, after all.

TennisHack
09-02-2002, 10:51 PM
And BTW, Layla, just for you, I launched a scoreboard. Will you explain to my professors why I did so badly on my work tomorrow? ;)

Layla
09-02-2002, 10:54 PM
Actually I don't think any court was covered, at least from what I saw on Eurosport.

Thanks for the tea dear. It'll come in handy. Calm our nerves (as if that could happen  :( )

Ok, do you want me to write them a note? :p

Chloe le Bopper
09-02-2002, 11:06 PM

Chloe le Bopper
09-02-2002, 11:08 PM
I'm not a big drinker either, which sucks cause its all my freinds do

Then when I dont drink people are like "why aren't you drinking".

I have finally resorted to being rude back and saying "because not everyone needs to drink to feel good about themsevles"

I can be mean, but they shouldn't bother me aobut it

Layla
09-02-2002, 11:11 PM
You're absolutely right Rebecca, forcing people to drink is stupid.

I'm not at all a big drinker. I don't even have to be drunk and I get the worst possible puke-all-day-long hangovers, so I have to be very careful about how much I drink. One beer is just right. Maybe two if I feel adventurous, but that's the limit.

Chloe le Bopper
09-02-2002, 11:18 PM
I drank a lot last year, and I've learned..

I used to go to my freinds place across campus and end up there till 4pm the next day not moving in the middle of the floor

Wow, netcam suddenly came alive!!!!! :bounce:

TennisHack
09-03-2002, 12:12 AM
Well, he did come out firing, not letting that break get to him, as he immediately got some break points back. And managed to hold his next service game.

If worse comes to worse, at least he can start serving in the second set.

But I'll cry if he loses

Well, I read her interview today and apparently she untaped it after the second set last night, but that it still hurts :( And as if that wasn't enough, when she slipped on the court and hurt her thumb, she also hurt her ankle.

Hi again :wavey:

Sorry I'm not around as much as I used to be :o I have classes and work and homework and . . . I'm around most of my free time, LOL. I'm working on a new installment for the story, very exciting! :)

Plus, I understand, it's hard to have meaningless conversation when something very meaningful just happened. Grrrr US Open.

Guga just lost  So PLEASE GOD TOMMY WIN! so the US Open won't be a total loss. I can honestly say I don't like anybody left in the men's draw (except Tommy & Max) and the women's draw is shaping up to be quite boring as well. Lindsay will probably play Serena (hopefully Dani!!) in the semis, so . . . GO LINDSAY!!

I hope Martina Hingis gets back to top form. I never really liked her, but I like her more than the Williams sisters. Perhaps that BB thread has something to do with it . . .:o

Layla
09-03-2002, 10:44 PM
lol I see Martina in a whole different light now ;) But I liked her before too. I'm sure she will get her groove back.

I don't like a lot of the players left in the draw either, which is why this is so hard. I was really looking forward to seeing great tennis on TV for two weeks, but I'm the kind of person that needs to be emotionally involved in a match, any sports match. Which isn't easy when I dislike both players in a match. But hey, can't have everything go my way ey?

I'm sad about Guga :( but at least a like Schalken a lot. Don't you? That was a great win for him, making it to the QF of a slam. And Guga's run was better than we expected really, so that's a good sign. :)

Btw, it's never hard to have a meaningless conversation. ;)

Looking forward to your installments. :bounce:

:o at myself. I didn't like her because she defeated Steffi Graf (my all-time favorite female player) and because she dominated for what, 5 years or something?

:o Damn fan fiction :o

I feel the same way. I'll watch almost anyone who plays, but there's something even better about watching your favorite players, or someone who's game you really admire. But when you could care less (as I felt during most of RG, since ESPN elected to show mostly American matches, pffffft  ) it's hard to truly enjoy the matches.

I'm sad about Guga :( but at least a like Schalken a lot. Don't you? That was a great win for him, making it to the QF of a slam. And Guga's run was better than we expected really, so that's a good sign. :)

Eh, I'm rather indifferent about Schalken. He seems so stiff-legged when he plays, but then I've only watched him on rare occasions (I think this year I've seen him the most, with two of his matches featured during Wimbly). He just hasn't made an impression on me. But if he takes out Fernando, I'll *SO* jump on his bandwagon :D

Looking forward to your installments. :bounce:

Hahaha, well can you give me the link? I'd like to see what's there (smilies) before I decide whether or not to use them.

Did you expect Sjeng to take Hewitt to the full five at Wimbly? I didn't. And he's played some pretty convincing matches so far. So, what the hell, GO SJENG! He deserves to be a quarterfinalist more than Gonzo.

Dani got whooped!:( but i'm looking forward to a Lindsay/Serena Semifinal! hopefully Lindsay will pull through, i know she can do it!:)

my report (just for Layla):

i got the Flushing Meadows at around 1:00, when the rain was coming down hard. i sat around in the food court watching the classic Monica Seles vs. Jennifer Capriati '91 Semifinal playing on the big screen for a while, but i was quickly bored, and soking wet!:( but patiently i waited, and it payed off!:)

i was pissed when Ferrero's match got pushed to a side court. it took me a while to find but i had to go and cheer my boy on! Gonzalez was playing really well, he hits the ball so hard! and i just love his one-handed backhand down the line, it's a great shot. i was a bit disappointed Juanqui couldn't pick up his game and maybe start serving better, but he was just outplayed. his hair looked nice though!:) i left his match but came back at the end, sadly to see him lose!

on a brighter note, i got to see Lindsay win over Farina Elia in straights. i got a bit worried at first when she dropped the first two games but she picked up her play, cut down on the unforced errors, and started moving better. and of course i was cheering pretty hard, i got really loud at times!lol!:D but the rest of the crowd was kinda silent, of course many seats were empty b/c most people went home during the rain delay.

i also saw some of Pete's match on Louis Armstrong. i was confused about who to cheer for, i kept going back and forth between Pete and Greg. but i decided that i would cheer for Pete b/c Tommy (who is playing him right now) just beat Sampras in Toronto this summer, but had lost to Greg in Indy! so i was very happy when he won. i was looking around to find Bridget in the crowd but sadly i couldn't find her!:(

the Tommy Haas match on the Grandstand was another good one. Haas led 4-0 in the 5th when Thomas started to comne back and i got really scared. but luckily Tommy served his way out of trouble, and finished him off 6-4 in the 5th.

i didn't see any play on Arthur Ashe Stadium, all those matches were straight set crushings. no way did i want to see Alex C go down to A-Rod!:(

and i saw some of Juju's match on Court 11 in the 2nd set, but i didn't stay for the end. too bad!:( and i would have liked to see Kimmy's match against Amelie, but i had to get home and get some sleep!lol! i'm kinda glad i left early tho, i don't think i would have been able to watch another one of my faves lose!:(

but overall it was another wonderful night in NY, so much great tennis ALL OVER the grounds. but i was so tired out from running all over from court to court. and now my hand is tired out from writing all this so i'll stop. :)

oh, and Tommy Haas is so emotional on the court. from fist pumps, to racquet throwing and cursing off his coaches, he is REALLY fun to watch! so much personality! plus i LOVE his one-hander!

Of course there are no good news. Why would there be?

Oh Tommy. I put so much hope in you. I know, I know, it's my fault for getting overexcited.

American Wankfest it is then. :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

The ATP part of the US Open has now officially died as far as I'm concerned. All I can say is, I hope Lleyton can defend his title, because I can't see Mad Max or Schalken progressing much further (sadly) and the thought of any other player winning this slam is so repulsive it makes my stomach turn. Please don't let it be Andy, please don't let it be Andy!

I'll see the replay of Tommy's match later on. :( I hope he at least played well.

And if Lindsay can take out Serena, I will be overjoyed. :) It's a sad, sad day when WTA becomes more important to me than ATP but so it goes.

Leo, thanks for your report, I really enjoyed it. I'm glad you had a wonderful night of tennis. :) lol @ looking for Bridget. ;)

TH, I hope you enjoyed the smilies. :) And I didn't think you were dissing my boy. Were you? ;)

Grr, I know. Tommy did win the tiebreaker, but lost the last set 7-5. At least we can say he put up a fight and didn't go away 2, 2, and 2.

Nope, no defensiveness at all :) I was just sharing my thoughts before that match. ;)

I see you know Monty Python. :D I love them. At one point I was almost obsessed with them. They helped me through a difficult period in my life by making me laugh my ass off every night. :D That's my kind of humor. I taped the entire Flying Circus series and I still have those tapes, probably the first tapes I ever made. They must be more than 10 years old now.

Oh btw, guess what! The Pretender is coming back! My local TV station finally decided to show the next season after a 3 year break, just when I gave up on the idea of ever seeing those episodes. Jarod and Miss Parker will be back in action on Friday. :bounce: I'm soooooooo happy.

I guess if I must dwell in tennis inferno, I might as well have a bit of TV heaven as well. :D

Monty Python is great!! I love that dry Brit wit that you have to watch a few times to get EVERYTHING they are making fun of :D I don't get a lot of chances to watch it, but I have seen "Holy Grail" (of course), and even viewed it in a class in high school! Crazy stuff. I also recently acquired BBC America, where they rerun Flying Circus sometimes. My favorite sketch is the dead parrot sketch, and I heart the knights who say NI!!

LMAO :) I'm in a great mood today :)

Usually when I'm going through rough periods, I am consoled by music, sometimes of my own mixing, sometimes of others' design. I am very endeared to Weezer for just this reason.

Ultra coolness!! The only thing about sharing a TV with a hundred other people . . . you don't get much say in what's being watched. Luckily, hardly anybody is down there during the day, so one of my friends and I go stake it out for tennis watching. We're going to watch both singles finals somewhere :) Even though I hate the Williams sisters (he loves them) and Hewitt, Agassi, and Sampras, who are likely going to be playing in the final--at least one of them. But sometimes you can't complain!!

lmao the dead parrot sketch. http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/rotfl.gif I couldn't say what my favorite sketch was off the top of my head but I remember the one where one of the Gumbies wants a brain specialist because his brain hurts. lmao at Cleese as a Gumby/doctor. That vacant look in his eyes just kills me. :D

Yes, music is always a great source of comfort for me. I love to listen to it late at night on the headphones. There's something eery about it (well depends on the music). Actually, any time will do. I often go on a short bike-trip with a great tape in my walkman. It relaxes me both physically and psychologically. :)

What do you mean by music of your of mixing? Weezer are great but I don't know them too well. Sadly, I can't afford to buy a lot of cd's. I borrow them from the library though. They have an excellent selection but no Weezer. :(

Like making a mix tape--or downloading music and burning it on a CD--only I make mix CDs. I like making my own mixes, sometimes just randomly and sometimes for creative purposes. Like the one I'm listening to now I made last year at Valentine's Day. The premise was to tell about the cycle of a relationship, and I think I did quite nicely :) I've been using it as a soundtrack for the story, or at least some of the songs.

Weezer is great. Their website is http://www.weezer.com, just if you want to take a look around. They also let you download their music, I think. I know they did before they released their last album. The best album, in my opinion, is their first album, Weezer, most commonly called "the Blue Album". It's only about half an hour long, but the songs are perfection. I'm sure you could find songfiles out there on the net somewhere. I'm not very hip with the burning music thing, so I'm not quite sure.

Hi Hackie!
Hi Layla!

Can you NOT love this lady????

Q. A lot of fans and media respect you for your independence, stand-up kind of woman. Today we're kind of shocked to see you come in with this Tommy Haas sleeveless shirt on. Are you falling into the latest fashion trend here?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I don't know what's wrong with my shirt. It's just a normal shirt. I'm sorry. It's a shirt I wear all the time.

Q. Has nothing to do with Tommy Haas' effort to change tennis customs?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I don't know how many girls wear sleeveless shirts. It's probably 95% of the players. I don't give a crap what Tommy Haas wears in his match. I'm sorry.

Lindsay kicks ass even in interviews!!!! :D

GO MAX!

Bye bye hackie, sweet dreams.

As for Lindsay, yes, they asked her that during the press conference. Its posted in the usopen.org site. Interviews section, yesterday.
They cut it from the video, though, fortunately...

Some reporters are just ugh!
Maybe it was the same guy who asked Guga 3 questions:
1. Who has the thougest double handed backhand out there?
Guga answered Agassi, probably.

2. Have you ever thought while playing Andre like 'wow, I wish I had that two handed backhand'?

3. Did you ever try the two handed backhand while practicing, just for the fun of it?

Yeah, thanks. Whole four, five years of university to reach that level of intelect. Woohoo!

Layla
09-05-2002, 01:35 AM
Amazing! Argh reporters! I'll never understand why they have to ask the same question at least three times during the same press conference. Weren't they listening the first time? Or maybe they can't listen and think at the same time and they're just too busy thinking up their incredibly clever question to pay attention. :p
