I knew you would like it! ;)
I´ll be waiting for your opinion on it later, then. :D

Gaijin, yes, I heard about it, but I don´t think I ever seen it. :(
This one I was talking about is called "Cidade de Deus". I even talked with Hackie about the book some time ago. (Well, a quite long time ago... :o)

And I thought the first song they played was The Sweater Song (with reference to being on the floor), but you mentioned later it was The Good Life and that's ok too. It sounds like an awesome show! I soooooooo wish I could've seen it lol. I talk like a teenybopper. :o

And lol @ TH for saying I was a bigger fan or something like that. You have got to be kidding. :D j/k I still remember who the real Weezer fan is around here, don't you worry. ;)

The pics are disastrous... :(
i can see them in the small screen that the camera has in its side, and they all have an enormous black tag in the top part of the screen. :( You can still see the band, but they suck.
And I dont have the goddamned cable right now, you will have to wait untill I can find one.

No doubt depends on the child. For those of you who have a facilitiy w languages, do you wonder where that came from?

That's the theory by people against immersion program. Actually, the failure is more because of the support from family than the ability of the children. Of course, if the children are bright and have a knack at language, they can succeed even without family support.

:) Lee, your son must have a talent for languages if he can just switch from one to the other without thinking. I'm not surprised he's good in music too, after all it's all about LISTENING. How is his accent?

Funny when in France there was a Michigan native who spoke French fluently but his accent was terrible -- I found it very disconcerting AND incongruous...

Another thing, do people who can speak more than one language ALSO imitate accents well?? OR do they LIKE doing accents?

If I speak French in Quebec I sometimes find that Quebecois have a certain attitude towards you -- not sure what it is, but it isn't the friendliest. I don't speak French w a Quebecois accent.

I'm sure English is very difficult to learn. I think anyone who can speak Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, other what I consider "difficult complex" languages can't be that dumb!!

He has no accent! It's a wonder but I'm not sure later. My nephew (a sophomore in Queens) who also grows up in Canada has a very funny accent when he speak Chinese. He has no accent when speak English but I'm not sure his French. He was in French immersion through junior high.

Another thing, do people who can speak more than one language ALSO imitate accents well?? OR do they LIKE doing accents?

I don't like doing accent myself.

I think it got nothing with you speak with accent or not. It's just they are Quebecois and you're not.

I just read the news about a Montreal swimmer who won a silver medal in World Championship and she brought a Quebec flag with her in the podium. Now there is a big fuss about it. She actually an anglophone from Montreal so I believe she has no political reason.

I doubt that. When I was in Hong Kong, I know lots of non Chinese speak excellent Cantonese. FYI, Cantonese is one of the most difficult dialect in Chinese language.

I don't know but I've heard Caucasian [White] people speaking what I consider perfect Japanese and they didn't learn it from childhood!! Certainly living in the country solidifies the language -- you have to speak it to survive -- no choice!

Some guy I worked w is absolutely fluent in Russian and translates it -- I'm so envious!! I will NEVER be fluent because I've lapsed horribly and will probably never immerse myself in that culture... too bad! I can't really follow Russian sites but I still have them bookmarked... one day I may return!

BTW, I LOVE panettone! I can't find any this year -- usually out for Christmas -- have to make a foray into Little Italy or sth.

Japanese is also a very complex language with several alphabets, and different levels of language plus the culture is very rigid and particular and UNIQUE. I believe that in Japan even today there is a time and place for certain things, behaviour, etc. If you do sth "wrong" or inappropriate you will know! Being an island nation isolated Japan from all other cultures [exc. Chinese -- they got most of their culture from China anyway but adapted it to their own life!]

Japanese is not exactly a language in the beginning. It's only a dialect (I think) without written words. Then, it borrowed Chinese characters, that's why if you read Japanese, you find lots of Chinese characters there. But to make things complicate, Japanese do not use whole set of Chinese characters. It also use phonetic symbols for whatever Chinese characters not covered. So, when you read Japanese, it sort of reading an English book which mix words and phonetic symbols.

Ok, hi Hackie! Here I am.

Lets start with the downloads then. :D
I got the Pittsburgh show, and I think you should start from this one. Its FABULOUS!

You have one of those download assistants, like Get Right?
I mean, the files are huge, and the site is always packed. That means automatically that you will have to be patient, coz each file will take some time, and the connection can break many times. With one of those little programs, you dont lose everything when the connection falls, coz it re-starts from where it was before...
So, you have one of those, right?

Dissident
12-12-2002, 10:18 PM
Now, when you manage to get in that, you will see a list of songs, linked

01-even_flow.mp3
02-hail_hail.mp3

and there it goes.

For each of them, right click on the link, and chose "Download with Get Right".
You can do that to all the links, but the program will download only two files at a time as a default. The others you chose to Wait.

Well, it seems I've connected now . . . is that a normal thing?

Dissident
12-12-2002, 10:30 PM
Yeah, that is what happens all the time. The server is busy, and that is the message it gives you.

Do the following. Right click all the links and ask to download with Get Right. Whenever you get the forbidden message, click on the X to close the window, and a box will pop up asking if you wanna continue downloading later.
When you finish all the files, they will be on the Get Right list, all of them.
Open the Get Right Tray Icon from the Start/Programs/Get Right menu, and then you will see all the songs listed.
Select them all, and click on the triangle that looks like a PLAY key. The default will ask you if you wanna initiate the Automatic Download instead of opening all windows. You click on YES.
Get Right will start to try downloading all the songs, and whenever the forbidden sign comes, it will automatically chose the next one on the list.
And then you dont have to worry for some time. ;)

Biofile: Patrick Rafter Interview
Patrick Rafter By Scoop Malinowski
12/11/2002

What do John McEnroe, Pearl Jam, Braveheart and Chinese food have in common? They’re all favorites of two-time U.S. Open champion Patrick Rafter. While the affable Aussie hasn’t played a match since Australia’s 3-2 setback to France in the 2001 Davis Cup final, he has taken time from his role as a new father to provide insight into his personal life in this interview.

Patrick Rafter Biofile

Height: 6-foot-1 Weight: 190

Born: December 28, 1972 in Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia.

Childhood Heroes: “John McEnroe — loved the way he played. Intensity. Pat Cash. Bjorn Borg — always loved Borg; his temperament. And I suppose because everyone always loves a winner (smiles)."

Childhood Dream: “To win Wimbledon. The biggest event. Something special.”

Earliest Tennis Memory: ”The first couple of years playing at Mount Isa. One of my first matches, I lost 7-6 in the third set to Scott Draper. He was seven, I was nine. I remember I came off, crying my eyes out (smiles)."

Pre-Match Feeling: ”Depends on how confident I feel. If I’m not confident, I feel more nervous. I visualize; I think that’s important. I do it for about five or 10 minutes. I think of me feeling good at the end of the match going up to him, shaking his hand (smiles).”

Greatest Sports Moment: “First U.S. Open in 1997. I always dreamed of winning a Grand Slam, but I never thought I'd actually win one. It was dreamland. Also, Wimbledon 2000 (beat Agassi 6-3 in the fifth set of the semifinals before falling to Sampras in a four-set final). The experience of getting to the final of Wimbledon.”

Most Painful Moment: “I suppose for a couple of years when I was 14-16. Those couple of years I could hardly win a match (after) being one of the best players in Australia as a 13-year-old. Many times I thought of giving it away then. Everyone was too strong for me then. I was a late bloomer.”

Favorite Movies: ”Braveheart, Gladiator, Fletch, Terminator and Aliens.”

Musical Tastes: "Pearl Jam, U2, Paul Simon, Simple Minds, early INXS, but I need to get some change, get into some new, different music as well. Because I've got to keep in style with my music (smiles).”

Favorite Meal: ”Chinese.”

Favorite Ice Cream: “I used to love it, but I don’t eat it anymore. But if I did — chocolate.”

Favorite Vacation Spot: ”Bermuda.”

Closest Tennis Friend: “Paul Kilderry.”

Funniest Player: “(Former Australian pro) Heath Denman. One of the funniest guys in the world. Incredible impersonations. Can take off any voice.”

People Most Admired: “People who work at something. Work 100 percent. People who achieve their dreams. I think that's so great. Takes such a great effort. It's very difficult. Takes strong character, a strong person. All the ups and downs...working through that. I've got a lot of respect for people like that.”

New Jersey native Scoop Malinowski has written and published Biofile interviews for several years. His work has been profiled in the New York Times. To read more Biofiles, please visit Scoop Malinowski’s Biofile web site.

Pat has great taste! :bounce: Braveheart, Aliens.. Pearl Jam, U2.. but how sad that he never achieved his childhood dream :(

Hi guys :wavey:

It's me coming back from the dead. I'm feeling considerably better today. Thanks everyone for the mental support. I'm happy that I'm not alone in this universe :). *many hugs to everyone*.
And thanks Hackie for all your help :).

Thx Leo for Pat's bio. Too tempting to not comment on it. Pat's a great person and I love everything about him. I like his earliest tennis memory, losing his match at 9 and crying his eyes out, so cute. It's too bad that he still haven't accomplished his childhood dream. Only if he had gotten himself into Wimby this year, I bet the winner won't be Lleyton. Oh well, that's life and you have to be at the right place at the right time.

I don't think I have completely over my crisis yet. But it won't get better if I continue like this. So I'm just gonna try not to look at the negatives and concentrate on the action plan. That's tremendous fear in me that makes me freak out these days. But I think Pat just gave me a good advise, to visualize, and think of the happy moment when the desirable result is reached. That could help to look beyond the fear. It's probably not en easy task but I think I should try that.

Thank you for that Pat bio! He still is really my all-time fave player! Not only is he a topnotch and unique player, he is a genuinely down-to-earth, real human being with great compassion and heart! As if that's not enough, he's got the looks that make women melt... AND he's not at all vain! He's humble, a fighter, has a great sense of humour, is the best S&V out there... I can go on and on...

It is sad that he never fulfilled his childhood dream... I keep thinking about how he never won DC for OZ either... it was so heartbreaking...

Welcome back Vera! It's good that Pat has inspired you. Sometimes Christmas is a very difficult time -- it's not always happiness for everyone. We're here for you!

Still not enough time to hang out, just dropping by. ;)

Vera, welcome back to the world of the living! :bounce: It's so good to see you again. :) *many hugs*

You sure sound much better now. And I have to agree with RogiFan. A lot of people have a hard time during or just before the holidays. For me, that's one of the hardest times in the year. More often than not I'll get moody and depressed. Fortunately, I often begin to feel better just after the New Year's.

I know it sounds lame, but what usually gets me through depressions is music and movies. If I let them, they can do wonders for me, but people deal with it differently and it might not work for you.

Right, I hope everyone has a beautiful day. :) I have to go now.

Hi Hitman! :wavey:

Are you still around? I though I had to go to the library but I changed my mind. I have too much work to do to go into town today.

Oooops, I forgot to clarify. Thanks for Get Real. I had no idea such a thing existed. :o That's what I meant by I wish I had it yesterday when I was clicking on the songs for hours like crazy, waiting if one of them will catch on. ;) And indeed thanks for all the tips. I'm now downloading 5 songs at a time, but don't want to spread it too thin. I guess I don't have such a great cable connection after all. It takes 1 or 2 hours just to download one song. The speed is between 1 and 2 kB/sec. How fast are they downloading for you?

The traffic seems to be much lighter today. I got in in my first try. :D So today is a good day for downloading.

I downloaded the Pittsburgh one, then the Seattle Showbox Dec 5 (last week), and now Im downloading the legendary Seattle closing show of the 2000 tour. Some people on the board said it was overrated, but I wanna check for myself. :D

Layla
12-13-2002, 01:47 PM
Two of my songs are also going at 2.1 k at the moment, but it's good to know it can get better as well. I don't mind waiting anyway. The computer is doing all the work and I'm just working on my horoscopes while he's at it. ;)

No, I haven't listened to any songs yet. I'm waiting to get them all and burn them, so I can listen to them in succession. :)

Oh and I remember we had a discussion about the "controversial" lyrics in your sig. Pfffft, people's prejudices!

But the line doesn't even have to be be about homosexuals. To me, since I'm straight, the lyrics are a reference to the feminine and masculine part in all of us. I've always been very interested in how the two polarities are expressed in an individual. I'm a huge fan of Jung, including his anima and animus concepts, so it's no wonder. ;) His theories have flaws, or rather there are a lot of things he didn't consider, especially homosexuality. All this was the theme of my thesis at the uni. But now I'm babbling.

So as a woman, I relate to these lines differently. It's the feminine part of men that seeks out meaningful relationships, that's the part that is prepared to commit, and it's pretty obvious that it's terribly repressed in a lot of men, especially "macho" men. :p Of course the masculine part of women has been repressed for a long time as well. We're just now learning to come to grips with our dual nature. So my translation of the question is, are you brave enough to accept and express your feelings, and in turn accept mine as well? Do you dare to be a whole person? Or are you just gonna run away like a scared little boy? Lol, that's just my interpretation though. ;)

And the bandaged hand in hand bit is a classic. Let the healing begin. :)

Oh, my poor darling husband #243 :sad:

Moby is bruised and "very curious" after getting jumped Wednesday night outside a Boston club.

After performing at the Paradise Club, the electronic music guru was signing autographs for fans when two or three men attacked him with mace and repeatedly punched him.

"I assumed that a bar fight had spilled out of the bar and that somehow I had gotten caught in the middle of it," Moby wrote on his Web site. "But no. After being punched in the head from behind a few times, I turned around to see what was going on and one of them punched me in the face a couple of times and then they all ran away. So now I'm sitting here bloody and beaten up and waiting to file a police report."

A spokesperson for the Boston Police Department said officers were called to the scene, where they interviewed the owner of the club and doorman, who was also sprayed with mace when he tried to stop the fight. Police later interviewed Moby at his hotel, where he said his glasses broke during the fight, rendering him unable to describe the attackers.

Moby, who has bruises and stitches on his face, wrote on his Web site that he's not badly hurt and that his biggest concern is finding out why he was jumped. He pleaded for one of the attackers to anonymously log on to his message board and explain the incident.

"I'm very curious as to why three men would coordinate an attack on me," Moby wrote. "You know, three against one? And the 'one' in question is me, hardly the most physically threatening person in the world."

In a later posting, Moby said he's not angry with the men and believes in forgiveness. "I just hope that at some point in these guys' lives they come to realize that hurting other people is wrong."

He also speculated on why he was attacked. "Maybe they don't like skinny bald guys who play cover songs. I'm sure that's it. It's my fault. I should've posted a warning on the entrance to the club: 'Warning: Tonight's show will at times be comprised of cover songs poorly played by Moby, a skinny bald musician.' "

Police are searching for two white men, approximately 22 years old. Their tip line is (800) 494-TIPS.

Here's what moby wrote on his website:

12/11/02 -- boston -- Curious, why?

brief update...
we played a concert tonight at a small club in boston, the paradise club. and after the show i went outside to get into my car. and there werea few people waiting for autographs, so as usual i stopped to sign a few things.
and then all of a sudden i was attacked by (i believe) 3 men with mace.
they punched me from behind and i really had no idea what was going on.
i assumed that a bar-fight had spilled out of the bar and that somehow i had gotten caught in the middle of it.
but no. after being punched in the head from behind a few times i turned around to see what was going on and one of them punched me in the face a couple of times and then they all ran away.
so now i'm sitting here bloody and beaten up and waiting to file a police report.
the assault could've been a lot worse. but i'm very curious as to why 3 men would coordinate an attack on me? you know, 3 against 1? and the'one' in question is me, hardly the most physically threatening person in the world. so if one or more of the people who attacked me tonight happen to be reading this, i'd be really curious to know why you attacked me.
you could anonymously sign on to the boards and describe the attack from your perspective. i'm honestly very curious.
and if anyone sees me in the next couple of weeks and i have some big bruises or stitches on my face, well at least you know why.
thanks.
moby

12/12/02 -- boston -- Lion King

and to the nice people who were standing in the rain outside of the paradise club, please don't let the fact that i was attacked ruin your night. i'm not badly hurt. really. just some bruisesand cuts. so please don't worry about me, ok?it was a really great night apart from the ending, so please don't be upset on my behalf, cos i'm fine. just beaten up.
it's happened before, actually. when i was working at the beat (a nightclub that used to be in port chester, new york) i ended up getting punched a few times. usually by belligerent drunks who were punching anything that moved. there was this one time in particular where i was working and a bar-fight started. i stepped out of my dj booth and this giant preppy guy just smashed me in the face with his fist. i fell down and he looked at me like he was going to hit me again but then the police showed up and dragged him and hisdrunken preppy friend to the police station.
i went down to the station to file a report and these two huge football-playing preppy guys who had attacked me were sitting in the police station crying and saying that they hadn't done anything. when the police had actually SEEN them hit me and some other people. the preppy bullies said that the bar staff (me included) had started the fight. the bar staff consisted of a female bartender who weighed 100 pounds soaking wet, me, and a doorman who was asleep.
but i digress. regarding the 3 guys who attacked me tonight, i'm not angry. i don't feel vindictive. not to sound weird or wimpy, but i'm a pacifist and i believe in forgiveness. i just hope that at some point in these guy's lives they come to realize that hurting other people is wrong.
and i'm left very confused as to why these guys wanted to attack me in the first place. maybe they don't like skinny bald guys who play coversongs? i'm sure that's it. it's my fault, i should've posted a warning on the entrance to the club, 'warning: tonights show will at time be comprised of cover songs poorly played by moby, a skinny bald musician.'
then they would've known and they could've avoided our performance and all of this trouble never would've happened.
see, we're all a little bit wiser now, aren't we.it's like 'the lion king', we laughed, we cried, we ran the gamut of emotions.
goodnight again.

12/13/02 -- san fransisco -- Your Concern

thanks everybody for the outporing of support.
and i don't want to in any way compromise the support that i've received, but i have to say that i really wasn't all that badly hurt. if you've ever seen the twilight zone where the man (or woman...i don't remember) gets plastic surgery to look 'normal' and the surgery fails and he's (or she's) left looking like a freak but at the end we realize that the 'normal' people look very odd and the 'freaks' look very normal(by our standards), well, i kind of look a little bit like the 'normal' people in that episode (and that was a very long and confusing sentence and if you want to ignore it then by all means, please ignore it, cos even though i wrote it it's confused me a little bit, too.).
what i meant to say is that my face is kind of puffy and cut up and my lip is a bit swollen, but i'm actually o.k, thanks.
maybe i should go out and run into a table so that i could look really beaten-up. after 'jackass' i believe that the slightly beaten-up scurvy pirate look is quite fashionable. so in some ways i should thank the courageous thugs in boston (3 guys with mace against me, a little in-bred muppet, very courageous...) for helping me to achieve that tough-guy look that's hitherto been so hard for me to accomplish.
but in all seriousness, thanks everyone very much for your concern. i'm still left quite confused as to why these guys wanted to attack me, but i guess they had their reasons.
thanks again.
mobyp.s-i can't really expect people to think of me as tough if i keep usingwordslike 'hitherto' in my journal entries, can i?

Well, I've only been able to hook up about 3 songs at a time, all day . . . right now I have three going but it's not really moving -- I've been down to 18 bytes/sec at one point

:sigh:

LOL, I'm glad you're still in the film craze because yours are the best! :)

Coolness, can't wait to see what you have to say about it ;)

I'm reading the 2002 Yearbook year-ending Rolling Stone mag and its rather amusing, I have to say. I love Rob Sheffield :D He's such an ass sometimes, but it's rather endearing :o;)
