Woa, talking about serving badly, look at Etlis (too excited to win the 2nd set or what).

Okay, I don't want to be mean, but JC should give him another bagel to call it a day. Us fans are exhausted having to worry about a second round match.

Layla
08-30-2002, 08:36 PM
I totally agree with you Vera. :) More Juanqui:

TennisHack

Ooh, thankies for the netcam pics Layla, we US fans aren't so lucky to get to see him on TV.

This shade of blonde suits him much better (and is closer to Jarkko's, LOL).

Layla
08-30-2002, 08:44 PM
Ok this is ridiculous. Eurosport can't show the 4th set of Juanqui's match because they want to show the entire Roddick freak show, from the beginning. That's not fair. :(

Jerkoffs.

But hey, at least you got to see some of him, no? We went from Guga/Safin to Haas to Davenport to Andy. That's why I'm back, LOL :)

Layla
08-30-2002, 08:48 PM
No I didn't get to see any of him. I was only watching the scoreboard and the netcam. ;) I got to see some of Davenport which is great but Roddick's match will put me to sleep. Besides, the crowd is singing and chanting his name.

LOL. Today is Roddick's birthday, so I'm not totally surprised.

Juan Carlos just broke in the fourth set :)

Layla

And he held too. :) 4-2.

I forgot about Roddick's birthday. Ok then.

Vera
08-30-2002, 08:52 PM
I'm just peeking at the TV, maybe they will show Juanqui's match point in between Roddick's changeover. Though I hate to have to watch any of those Andy Roddick match. Also hoping they will show Grosjean and Clement fighting their battle out there, well I can only hope.

Layla
08-30-2002, 08:54 PM
I would love to see Grosjean and Clement. So many good looking matches and we have to see Roddick lol. Grosjean's matches are so up and down. I hope he wins. Come on Grosjean darling.

I'm actually not sure if they have a TV camera on Court 11, I was thinking about that earlier.

It's a disgrace that a Top Ten seeded player has to play out in the boonies, but what can you do. I wonder if Cliff & Pat had a say in who went were  ;)

Layla

Sorry for being a broken record, but I just can't get over this change in hair color. Maybe he got caught out in the acid rain or something. The Russian reporter said he did it 3 days before his match, right? That's less than a week ago. How did it go from bright yellow to a normal color, and why did he do it in the first place?!?!

Besides to freak me & Layla out, of course :)

Juan Carlos, you always keep us guessing

Thanks for all those pictures.

What a relief. It's only the 2nd set. I'm hoping he won't face Gonzalez the next round. Or he'll just really have to keep his level the whole match.

Layla
08-30-2002, 09:30 PM
I'm much more confident now that he won the second round. :) But you're right, Gonzalez is a dangerous opponent. But so is Ferrero! :D

Vera
08-30-2002, 09:35 PM
Very true.
His record past the 2nd round is great this year. I'm sure he's aware of that and probaby gain a lot of confident after the 2nd round. I can't wait to see the next one. Hopefully, it's in a court where there's TV setup. Better yet, if they show it. Having Gonzalez as a opponent certainly helped. He's the guy who just beat Roddick.

I have a theory about his hair. Maybe he is getting it to throw off Arthurs, afterall Arthurs' the giant killer, that deserves some respect. I think now they have those temporary dye, would that be the case?

Layla
08-30-2002, 09:36 PM

Layla

I've never heard of temporary dye. You mean something you wash off? It takes several washings and I don't think you can achieve such a flourescent color. I think he had to have bleached it, or it wouldn't be so much lighter. But my theory is that he lost a bet or did it on a truth or dare. Something like that. Or just to stir things up.

Vera
08-30-2002, 09:48 PM
What a treat, I'm watching the frenchmen fighting it out now, Grosjean's hitting some beautiful return of serves but unable to beat Clement. On serve now. I have to sit closer to the TV. I'll be right back.

Layla
08-30-2002, 09:54 PM
Oh noooooooo. Sebastien lost.

Well, they can't all win I guess... Poor Seb. :(

Vera
08-30-2002, 09:58 PM
Ouch. He lost. I mean Grosjean. Man, I hate this year's draw, all those nice players facing each other so early. 3 of my fav's down. Just a couple remains. Though just need one to win to make me happy. Go Juanqui!

Yet, I heard of those temp dye, it's like you can undo it. I'm not sure how it works but you don't have to wear it out or dye over, just undo. But with that fluoresent color, I'm not sure. A dare could be a good reason. If he just want a change, he should at least keep it til the Open's over. Now, can someone interview him and ask him about that?

Layla
08-30-2002, 10:07 PM

Pssst. Just in case Juan Carlos is reading this, let's not bring this subject up again. We don't want him to give another angry press conference about it, do we. ;)

Of course you're absolutely right and I think that outburst at the press conference just goes to show that he knows what we know and it's bothering him a lot more than he usually shows.

Rome 2002. He had a point but his presentation of it was slightly awkward. He was angry and claimed Spanish players were discriminated against because he was the defending champ and had to play on an outside court that wasn't covered during the rain.

There was a huge discussion about it over at the gotennis board. True, it was started up by one very talkative and long-winded guy accusing him of being a wimp and a whiner, but he stirred up quite a debate.

A HA! Found it:

TENNIS MASTERS SERIES--ROMA
ROME, ITALY

May 8, 2002

I. LJUBICIC/J.C. Ferrero
7-5, 6-2

An Interview With:

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Juan Carlos, please.

Q. What went wrong today? Was it the rain, the cold air, the balls?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: The conditions on the courts were heavy. The conditions of the ball were very heavy. The condition of the court was not ideal. I am a little bit fed up that I had to play on that court. I feel that the Spanish are being treated not in the right way, and it's about time some of the Spanish players turned up and said something about the conditions where they're put to play. When Moya was No. 1, he did not get the right treatment when he had to play. Now I'm No. 3 in the world. I did not play on center court. I did not play on Pallacorda. I had to play on a court where the conditions were not good. The other courts were covered, and that court was not covered so it's been receiving a lot of water all day. Again, coming back to the point that the Spanish are not treated the right way, there should be something done about it.

Q. Do you think they gave the center court to Moya because he was playing Hewitt maybe? He's famous like you (smiling).

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: The treatment that the Spanish players are receiving is not the correct treatment, and this has happened for a long time. I don't know if Moya would have played on another court. They can win or they can lose, but the treatment of the Spanish players is definitely not correct.

Well, I don't know how angry he appeared (I didn't see it I just read it) but he sounded very angry. The press conference was exactly two questions long and that's all he said. Maybe I'm wrong and they just truncated the rest of it (doubt it though, the other transcripts were loooooong), but it looked pretty ridiculous. It didn't even fill half a page on the computer.

That's what I mean by awkward. He said it in anger and didn't prepare his point. I'm sure if he thought about it he would've phrased it differently or maybe just forget about it. But he wasn't taken seriously because he was too angry to make a comprehensive point.

Plus, I'm sure if the interview had been conducted in Spanish, he would have been more to the point.

But I'm glad it pisses him off, too. No need to get too passive out there.

Vera
08-30-2002, 11:06 PM
Hmmm. I see. Thx for finding the interview.
I'm sure he's not the only one complaining about this thing. Lots of players complain about what court they were put on. But if he's the defending champ, then I think he had a point.

Though, he needs to block this kind of distraction out. I mean, losing in Rome the first round is a shock, if it's over this court thing.

Absolutely. And of course the conditions on that court were much worse than on others. (A few of them were covered) But there was something strange about that complaint. Why would Spanish players be discriminated against in Rome of all places. Italy and Spain are so much alike and it was a clay court tournament. I know they are discriminated against pretty much everywhere else, especially in the States, but Rome? I think it would have been better had he said they were discriminated against in general, not just in Rome and would just quote Rome as an example.

Wasn't Juanqui also injured right around this time? I'm sure that, plus having to sit out a rain delay, and then having to play on a court that wasn't covered (!!) is enough to make anyone go bonkers.

Vera
08-30-2002, 11:09 PM
Then again, he's the clay court king (side-by-side with Guga now). It is a little ridiculous to put Hewitt on the show court, even if he's facing Moya.

Yes, he was injured. And more importantly, he was facing the prospect of dropping from number 2 or 3 in the rankings to somewhere like 9 and then even further down the ladder. After Hamburg he dropped out of top 10 altogether.

And the centre court was not the only court he could've played. There were other ones better than the one he ended up playing at.

I just brought this up because I remember that on that gotennis board, almost everyone was against him, which really upset me at the time. :(

However ppl sees it. I think it's a good thing that he vent it out. He need to do it once in awhile. Not to keep everything inside. He seems to be the quiet type so I doubt he'll say anything unless he's really frustrated.

I remembered reading his interviews in RG when he was asked why he's up and down in the match against Agassi. He said if he can be all up all the time (something like that), he would be beating everyone and be number 1 by now. I like that he gets a little edgy sometimes.

Oh, I completely agree with you, hence my "no need to be too passive out there" comment further up. I also like that he gets angry and lets his anger show, because he's always been classified as "the nice one" or "the kid". Well, he's not a child, he's 22 years old, and he has the right to get angry when shit like this happens to him.

I was just assuming that spanishs don't get much respect in the States, or North American. Why would they do that in Europe? That's too bad, I think spain is the number tennis nation right right. They have 3 top 10 players and about 6 in the Top 50.

No wires crossed. I think we're all in perfect agreement and understanding here. I just wish you'd have been there when he was under attack on that board. ;) I hated the fact that they all thought Ferrero was some sort of a whiner who needed perfect conditions to win.

Yes I have seen the latest pictures from the US Open, I was up searching for them for half the night. I put it up on my wall at like 2 am last night :o But that's what happens when I'm online so late, I start posting pictures on my wall. I sometimes wonder if I'm going to wake up in the morning and go, "What the hell was I thinking?!"

I mean, I was thisclose to putting up that picture of Yevgeny and his daughter that's posted in the Russian forum. I'm sure that would have gotten some strange looks.

I have lots of good looking boys on my wall, not just tennis players but mostly. And of course Juan Carlos outnumbers them all, LOL. But it's nice, whenever I'm having a bad day or want to think of some more story ideas, to just look up and have beautiful pictures to stare at.

So sorry. I was on the phone. You don't like Jenn's Juanqui? I do. Well apart from the fact that everyone else seems to think he's boring, but he opens up nicely and his romance with Martina is steamy. Marat and Goran are the best. Just hilarious. http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/rotfl.gif

Hehehe, it does have its moments, doesn't it:

Marat chimes; "You go girl" and fakes getting all teary and emotional.

Early in the morning, Marat is called to the diary room and informed by BB that should any more chickens be killed, the guilty party will be evicted from the house immediately. Marat asks "What if one of the chickens is ill, couldn't we put it out of it's misery... and then eat it?". BB gives a firm response "No"

LMAO!!!

Perhaps just being influenced by our conversation last night, where we all agreed we like the edgy Juan Carlos. So far in my reading he's been a wimp.

But I agree, his fling with Martina isn't as bad as I originally thought. ;)

Layla
08-31-2002, 05:55 PM
Oh I wouldn't say he was a wimp. But in the beginning, all characterisations were a bit sketchy. The story progressed nicely though, even though Juan Carlos never played a huge role in it. But yes, I like the edgy Juan Carlos. That's why I'm so enamoured with this pic. That killer look just sends shivers up and down my spine. :)

More quotes . . .

Juan Carlos then assists Goran in cutting and sawing various pieces of fabric together to make a jokers outfit.

Awww!

In a burst of inspiration Juan Carlos comes up with the perfect theme song for Martina, Jennifer Lopez's I'm real. He also comes up with Elvis' A little less converation for himself.

Hey, good choice for Juan Carlos. I'm not sure I'd call him a man of few words, though.

Predictably Marat and James are almost able to recite the whole Karma Sutra, as they brag of their sexual exploits. This conversation seems to bring them towards a more common ground; they both love women and sex.

 James?! LOL.

*James who brought boxing gloves into the house, gets Justine to don them and use his abs as a punching board. "We can have some fun with this" he says. He tenses and tells Justine to hit him as hard as she can. As she continues to hit him until she goes red in the face, he doesn't even flinch; "That's what you call, abs of steel" he says. Marat, Juan Carlos and Goran are becoming infuriated by his cockiness. Marat decides to teach him a lesson; "You know what. How about you try taking the punches of a real man?". James doesn't shirk the task, challenging; "Go ahead take your best shot". Justine offers Marat the gloves, but Marat discards them. Then throws all his body weight into punching James's stomach. James braces himself but remains unmoved. Marat jumps up and down, having hurt is hand. James smiles at Justine who giggles. Juan Carlos and Goran offer no comfort; "it seems" Goran quips, "that you punch like a little girl" The two burst out laughing. Marat's hand soon recovers, but his giant ego takes a more lasting bruising*

LMAO!!!

Juan Carlos is prepared to take the role of the victim, but the other male roles are in dispute.

A break for breakfast and Marat has returned to pursuing a kissing scene with Justine, even if it is not mentioned anywhere in the script. "Obviously, you will have to wear something appropriate for the bed scene, but don't worry we will be under the covers so nothing will be shown" . . . The bedroom door opened and Juju shouted "I am ready", causing the guys to rush to the door. Goran being the first to enter could not believe his eyes when he saw Juju standing there.... in a pair of workmans overalls!. Marat shouted "What the hell are those?". Juju was confused by Marat's question, but Goran quickly quipped "I think they are known as industrial strength overalls"

LMAO!! Oh God, I'm on the floor over here!!!

Once they have carried the babies inside, the 6 sit around the couch with the new arrivals and begin to thin up names. Goran and Xavier name their girl 'Baby' as it is easy to remember!
Marat and Kim amalgamate their names together to name their boy Markim.
Martina and Juan Carlos go for tradition naming their son Juan Jr.*

LMAO at Goran!! How could he have been kicked out, he's been the best character so far!

I know. It's ridiculous. There are 12 people who vote for the nominations each week. I guess a lot of them hate Goran cause he was nominated every single week I think. Regardless of how great he was for the story. The general public loves him though (I think). That's why he was never actually voted off. Are you saying he's out now and not Martina? I didn't even check yet. :o

TennisHack
08-31-2002, 07:09 PM
Juan Carlos and Martina bath, change and feed Jr. Goran quips to Marat "My god...they could make a video on how to be the perfect parents". Marat agrees saying "I told you that boy is whipped, whipped, whipped". Xavier joins "yes...never mind double whipped cream, just call him double whipped Juan Carlos?. But Goran is not so quick to dismiss Juan Carlos as a lost cause after the way in which he had reacted yesterday; ?Something else is going on. Him and Martina are getting it on. He?s not stupid, he is getting something in return. Maybe we are the stupid ones after all?.he?s more of a casanova than we took him for?

;) It's always the quiet ones.

Too many unforced errors. For a while he looked like the better player out there, but he couldn't quite sustain it. Now let's see if he can play like in the first set and turn this around. The match is still great though and Hewitt is definitely vulnerable.

Just looking at Ferrero's draw. In his quarter he has:

Fernando Gonzalez--3RD
either Coria or Clement--4RD
either Sargisan, Schalken, Massu, or Guga--QF

I think he could make a serious run! I think Gonzalez is the toughest match-up until the quarters, where he could face Guga.

This is exciting!!

Prize Money

SINGLES (Men and Women - 128 Draws)
Winners $900,000
Runners-Up $450,000
Semifinalists $250,000
Quarterfinalists $125,000
Round of 16 $58,000
Third Round $36,500
Second Round $21,000
First Round $11,000

The winner gets almost twice as much as the runner up, and the first-rounders barely get anything at all in comparison. I hate that the US Open spends so much on the winners of the singles titles.

Probably because of his shoulder. I don't know. :(

Well, they haven't shown any of Kimmy's matches on Eurosport either and they wouldn't have shown this one it it wasn't raining.

Would you believe that people are writing to Eurosport and accusing them of being racist for not showing Williams' matches. The commentator was in total disbelief. He said they were so short there wasn't much point in showing them. I mean who would want to see their early round matches anyway. Snooze.

But I thought this shit only happens in America, not in Europe. I guess diehard Williams fans are the same everywhere, same arguments. :p Of course Eurosport can't show all the matches. If they show Safin/Kiefer match for instance, it lasted 4 1/2 hours. Unfortunately whatever is going on in the meantime will not be aired. How hard is that to understand? But no, must be racism. And that regardless of the fact that Eurosport shows wta matches all the time during the year and only rarely shows atp. Grrrrrr.

Well I'll tell you the matches I saw, then tell details of stuff

I only went the first two days though  :D

Day One:

I wanted to see Anna, so I sat through Norman and Costa, then Kafelnikov and Sanguinetti (sp?) - all that for an awful match :( Anna played like crap, and Widjaja kicked her butt :sigh:

Costa-NOrman just about put me to sleep :p Good lord it was terrible!!!! I even wrote in my note book "for the love of god, make it stop!!!" :D

After those matches, we wandered around to see the premisis :p Then we saw some of Serena-Corina, and Agassi-Ginepri.

Then we left, we were tired :(

Day Two

At various points we saw Daniela, the Williams sisters, Dokic, Lindsay, and Danilidou (as she was leaving), on the practice courts.

I yelled at my freind "wait, I want to get a pic of Venus before we leave" and people laughed at me :D I guess I was loud :D

There was an autograph session with Justine Henin at 2pm at the Sanex booth, so we went there around quarter too, and I got my hat signed. She seemed freindly :)

The first match we saw was Mark P and Schalken - good match untill Mark got hurt  I don't even want to talk about that  I was so bummed - my freind didn't get what the big deal was either... I tried to explain that if he has one more surgery he's done likely, but meh. It looks like he won't need that thank god.

Then we saw Hingis-Irvin, which turned out to be a match ;) Hingis should have won in two I thought, but she dipped a bit. She's still not close to where she was though. She wasn't playing those great angles or thinking her way through points as much, just banging from the baseline

Then Monica was up next, i'm sorry i don't remember her opponent - G---- something? I couldnt' pronounce it, that is why I forget it.

After that we watched some of Guga's warmup, then went to the grandstand where i sat for half an hour before Ferrero's match.

I was about a foot beside his change over chair, and two rows back :D

Yum yum - rr.. I mean, good match.

Oh yes, and his hair...

Picture don't quite catch how uneven it was lol - really blotchy.

It was worse in person lol.

He and Arthurs came out, and I could see them in the distance. They both had the same outfit so i couldnt' see which was which at that point (they were not qutie out yet) - and it looked like he either had cut off his beautiful messy hair, or fell into bleach - i wasn't sure which was worse :D

Then he came out, and i saw it was the latter :P

But when they are developed and i figure out where the hell i can scan them, i will scan These, and Torontos!

:D We are all very jealous. Did you hear anything about why he dyed his hair? No one in the American media thought it worthy of reporting  ;)

Layla watched the match on TV, and said he was very animated on court. Could you tell a difference from his normal style of play?

Chloe le Bopper
09-01-2002, 05:16 PM
He was pretty pumped up, but he was mroe animated when i saw him in Toronto as well. Aside from against Koubek, who he was listless against.

He got pissy with the ump at one point, dropped his racquet, put his hands on his hips and just glared at him :D Man, does he ever have an awesome leer ;)

Then he went up to the ump and yipped at him for a minute or so :D

I was so proud :hearts: ;)

He did a little jump and pumped his fists when he had won, and was smiley etc :p He was mroe smiley after winning against Thomas in Toronto, but i have a feeling that was more relief ;)

I have no idea why he dyed his hair.

My guess was that he lost a bet.

Anna getting boo-ed off court upset me  the guys behind us thought that she had tanked.

It annoys me that people will come to gawk at her, then boo her cause she had a bad day. SOme stupid kid came up to us and said "I'm sorry, but she sucks" after the match (we still haven't figured out who he was talking about), and that was annoying :fiery: She doesn't suck, she just had a bad day :sigh:

It was decent, but Kafelnikov really shouldn't have lost a set. He wasn't his best, but he wasn't terrible either.

Its a shame he got waxed by hrbaty.

And yes Layla, it really was that bad. It was patchy - it reminded me of when i had my hair stripped.

I had too much red in it, so they had to strip the colour out to get rid of it.

It was bright yellowy, and gross lol

But the rest of him was good :lick:

Yes, I thought I'd heard that he wants to buy the tournament when he retires. So he'd still be connected to the tennis world, player or not.

And even if he retires from singles, I can't think that'd he stop playing completely--as in, he'll show up for doubes :)

About the concert. This band Firewater is incredible. It's an alternative rock band but they base thier songs on traditional dance rhythms such as waltz or rhumba. They have a violinist and a whacko keyboard player who likes the sound of hapsicord (I'm not sure that's the right word). But basically they're just wailing. And they have a charismatic singer/guitar player. I really had a lot of fun. :D

Are you kidding me? In matches like this I practically have stress attacks every set. The two haven't played professionally but Gonzo has whipped Ferrero on clay, in juniors. He's the one who took the 98 RG juniors crown from Ferrero.

But perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned that.

Layla

Yes they do, don't they. I have this theory (another one :o ) that that RG final might have been different had it not rained for half an hour after the first few games. Because I remember he started really well, very aggressive and after the rain delay well...

But I really believe his mental outlook has changed recently, so maybe it won't bother him this time. I almost hope this match continues tomorrow, than I'll be able to follow it. It's 1:30 am here.

I absolutely agree that the rain was the straw that broke the camel's back during the RG final. It rained in nearly all of his matches, I think the frustration just built . . .

I hope that he's over that hump, and not angry that he got put on an outside court after being scheduled for a show court. No news about the rain delay just yet, but there are 3 more potential hours of play . . . .
