Oh poor thing. You had a migraine? :( I hope it's completely gone now. I've been better. Lol, I'm not that preoccupied with the cd burner anymore. I've already burned over 20 cds, a total overload, so I'm taking it easy now.

Becca, I'm all for this title, but let's see what the others have to say when they get here.

Well I'd rather make the title something positive.

I think I have been acting bitter enough for all of us today ;)

I mean - I took Roland Garros FAR better than this - it's just stress.

Anyhow - as I said I'd rather a happy happy title, but if we want Reality Bites, I will put it.

Well, I'm sick now, I guess from fucking with my sleep so much. :( But I gotta say, it was worth it. My week didn't end exactly as planned, but I wouldn't change my experiences over this weekend even if I could.

Leo, it's okay to be angry, we were all feeling it last night. Just please excuse me if I don't reply to your messages while you're like this. I've read the aftermath all over this board and it's pretty damn ugly. It just makes me sad all over again :(

Like I said before, we can't be unhappy with Juanqui's play. This was NOT RG simplified, in fact he showed that he could come back from losing his head and focus on the match. In the end, it just wasn't his day, and eventually all of us are going to have to accept it. It's not going to be easy for us or for him, but it's going to have to happen if we want to get on with it.

I'm not going to delete the scores thread, espcially if Scott deleted some of the most offending posts. I'm sorry that some of the people who were around last night couldn't contain themselves. I wish there was a way to ban them on a group vote, but alas there's not. So slap them on ignore and go on about your business. That's just about the only way I've been able to cope.

Right now I just feel kind of numb about the whole thing. I want everyone here to be okay (which is seems like you will all be) because I don't want this place to disintegrate. It's the best tennis board I've come across in awhile and I don't want one match to ruin it. :(

As per the I'm sorry comment, I addressed that last night. I think it was very appropriate in the moment, but is probably kinda dumb now. I just like to think it's because Hewitt knows he got damn lucky and that he won't be so lucky in the future ;)

Favorite match of the year: Roland Garros quarterfinal against Agassi. It was his surface, it was his tournament, and he showed that he could beat The Ultimate Prick who had to resort to juvenile tactics to take his set.

A close second: TMS Cincinnati QF vs Wayne Arthurs, which showcased all of my favorite shots, the passing shots  It was also a nailbiter, with two breaks of serve being the seperation between Mr. All Serve No Shots and Ferrero. Juanqui also showed that his game has evolved and improved, and went on to win his second hard court title later in the year :)

Leo7
11-17-2002, 07:52 PM

I'm usually following the scoreboard, if anything at all, so I want to know what's going on from someone who's watching it. Plus, it's just a lot more fun to watch with other people and since my TWB wasn't around I settled for the next best thing :)

I need support when I'm watching matches like the Agassi RR, Moya SF, and the final :o

Hi everyone! :wavey:

I've decided to come back and try to stay out of arguments. I'm not feeling much better but at least I've dammed the flood of tears for now.

That's just the problem Emma. It's not fans clashing like on wtaworld. I didn't have a single problem with Lleyton's fans, in fact I went to the forest and congratulated Lleyton and Kimmy and meant it too. All the fights were between fans and people who couldn't care less about either player. Honestly, right now I'm sick of people who spend most of their posts ridiculing players. But I'll do my best to ignore them. However, on a day like this I won't be quiet, because it hurts too much. Anyway, I've said all I had to say and won't argue anymore.

I'm proud of Juanqui. I don't think he has anything to be ashamed of. He made it to the final and played a great match, that's an amazing achievement. He rose to the occasion. His hardcourt record is outstanding now. :D I think I love him more than ever for playing his heart out. :hearts: No matter what the outcome was, he showed everyone he can play on hard courts as well. And I have a sneaking suspicion he handled his defeat better than we did. ;)

It was kinda like me saying sorry when I beat you in the gotennis league. ;) You know I meant it and so did Lleyton IMO. I actually think Lleyton adores Juanqui in a way. :o And why wouldn't he? All right, if you still need to SCREAM!!

I started out on the wrong foot
Now I'm not myself
I am Jekyll, I am Hyde
Found this place to hide
Come seek me

Oh, so up and down
So back and forth
So insecure
Can't get this taste out of my mouth
Swallow it down
Pretend

Hold it, hold it all in
Let it build up
Build a bomb
Blow it, blow it away
Clear it all out
Just end it

I'm just a normal person
Without those problems
When did it change?
Admissions so embarrassing
I'm on the verge of tears again

Hold it, hold it all in
Let it build up
Build a bomb
And blow it, blow it away
Clear it all out
Just end it

Oh look I took the Band-Aid off
Did I take it off too soon?
Hysterical confession
My big courageous move

Don't gasp at the predictable
A comforting lie can't last
Preordained checklist of this awkward love
It's so sad

Hold it, hold it all in
Let it build up
Oh, build a bomb
Blow it, blow it away
Clear it all out
Just end it

Sort it, sort it out
Just give it back
No thank you
Toss it, toss it away
Eliminate
Just give up

I can't decide
This tug of war

Another Justine article :)

Henin swaps racket for wedding bouquet

Belgian tennis player Justine Henin swapped her racket for a wedding bouquet on Saturday when she tied the knot with childhood sweetheart Pierre-Yves Hardenne.

The 20-year-old bride waved at well-wishers who had gathered outside the church to catch a glimpse of one of the country's sporting heroines.

Henin met Hardenne, a trainee tennis coach, four years ago at a tennis club where she had been presenting prizes. They were engaged in March 2001.

French tennis professionals Sandrine Testud, Natalie Dechy and Henin's long-time coach Carlos Rodrigues were among those invited to the wedding in southern Belgium.

One notable absentee was fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters, who had decided to join boyfriend Lleyton Hewitt who is playing in the Masters Cup in Shanghai.

Clijsters beat Henin 6-2 6-1 in the quarter-finals of the WTA Championships in Los Angeles last week, before going on to clinch the title against Serena Williams.

Henin, who turned professional in 1999, is one of four children. She lost her mother to cancer when she was 12 and was encouraged by her father Jose to start playing tennis.

OK! Even though Juanqui is not my number 1 fav. the match really took my breath away and it's not literal. Before, whenever I read something about someone is so stunt or whatever that they forgot to breath, I don't believe it but it actually happened on some of the points they have. I was glad those points were long but not THAT long to kill me.

Both players are execellent! When we said the prev. 2 semi that both players should be winners, this one is even more. The major differences between the winner and loser is the mental toughness. Juanqui able to close out the 3rd and 4th set cos he had 2 breaks on hand, so the pressure to serve out the sets were less. His 1st serve % drop dramatically on those final games in the 3 sets he lost.

The most important thing Juanqui needs to work on in post season is his mental toughness and believing himself. Also, he needs to control his body language. Although his face didn't show any emotions during the match, his body language told Hewitt he was upset, was not sure of himself and Hewitt is very good on jumping on his opponents' self-doubt. This not only happened to Juanqui, it also happened to Rogi and many other players.

Agree with all your points, but thought this was especially interesting. How can you control your body language? It's hard enough to control your emotions verbally and to "keep the game face on". There has to be an outlet somewhere, and I guess this is it.

I think it was more nerves than anything else, but that's just from the live scores and what people have told me since. I think he's grown by leaps and bounds since the RG final and I think that's something to celebrate :)

i agree with Lee. this match was decided on mental toughness. that's the part of Juanqui's game that needs the most improvement imo, more than his volleys/net game. in the match Juan Carlos surprisingly went up to net alot, and most of the time it paid off for him, prolly b/c his approach shots were so strong.

Juan Carlos's net game is quite good, considering he hasn't use it very much before. He volleyed a lot of points from Moya, as well, I noticed. This is very encouraging :)

First, never drop your shoulders. Second, always keep your chin up. When you're upset with a line call, you can yell at the linesman, you can yell at the empire but never just stare at those ppl and THEN drop your shoulder, you can shrug your shoulders and try to prevent the call did not upset you and you can get your point back, etc, etc, etc.

i think Lindsay Davenport should improve her attitude on court as well. she gets down on herself too quickly and immediately starts slumping her shoulders and throwing her racquet around, even when she is winning. those kinds of negative actions are a sign to the opponent.

I agree with Leo! Like Cliffy & PMac kept saying during the match, Hewitt play lots of double because he became #1 in the tour. This is the reason he's so good around the net and read and react so fast.

I think it's really hard to control it nonetheless, especially when you get a bad call that you think is good. Controlling your anger via not saying anything is easier to do than trying not to shrug your shoulders when the chips are down.

Like I said, I haven't seen this match yet. But I do remember, clearly, the RG semifinal against Guga last year and he was very down on himself, but it was more because he was dragging his feet during the points and slowly walking from side to side to return serve. That was the point where he had given up and was just going through the motions. You could tell because he wasn't even trying during the points. If I'm correct it was a pretty big slugfest last night and Juan Carlos gave it everything he had until the end. Maybe he was just too tired to go on in that last service game, I don't know.

I would agree that he needs to control himself when he gets that far down on himself that he's not even trying, but the little things like being angry at a line call I think should fly a little lower on his radar.

And, of course, as he continues to improve his mental toughness and to stay in matches, it will all happen anyway as he gains the belief that he can stay in matches to the bitter end.

No, it's not easy! But being a professional tennis player, this is one of the things that he need to do. Just like hitting those monster fh or painting the line. Not everyone can do these and definitely need lots of practise.

I learned these after sitting in nurmerous meetings with those red necks in the oil industry and most of the time being the only female in those board rooms.

You're absolutely right Lee. There's just one problem. Venting my frustration here wouldn't have worked for me because I primarily wanted to let Jorge know that what he was doing was wrong. I can't ignore everything and always stay quiet. God knows how many things I let slide because I didn't want to get involved into an argument even though I fervently believed they were despicable, but one can't always turn a blind eye to everything. That is also the reason for my other argument. Yesterday I just got fed up with people who always stir shit. I'm not completely without a sense of humor, but I am quite a serious person underneath it all and there's a thin line between humor and just plain meanness. I've expressed my mounting frustration with blatant disregard for anyone's feelings before and I guess that yesterday it just came to a boil.

I feel better now and I won't start any more arguments. ;)

Lee, I couldn't agree with you more about what I also percieve as Juanqui's major flaw. You've analysed it perfectly. True, it's not easy to learn to control your body language but it's not impossible. First you have to be aware of the problem and you have to pay a lot of attention to it. Like Leo said, Juanqui and Lindsay share this problem. The slumping of shoulders is the worst thing you can do. Yelling at yourself is fine. That doesn't mean you're not confident about winning. Haas talks to himself all the time and expresses disgust over some of his shots but that doesn't send a signal that he doesn't believe he could win. Throwing rackets around like Safin does is ok too. It shows that he's 100% involved in the match. I get worried when he doesn't throw any rackets and that is usually when he loses. Ferrero sometimes gets this forlorn look in his eyes and he starts dragging his feet. Even my commentators have mentioned this on a few occasions, just like they mentioned it regarding Lindsay.

He might learn from someone like Schalken or Santoro. They never show any doubt or frustration. And TH, you mentioned Johansson in the AO final. That was just the time when I was seriously getting into tennis and I remember vividly, how calm and collected Thomas was. Nerves of steel, while Safin was falling apart. That I believe was the key to the match. I was very much surprised when a month later Johansson was falling apart in a similar way in Dubai. Obviously, mental toughness and control of your body language is a work in progress, but it needs to be undertaken.

I believe Juanqui's mental toughness and confidence has improved considerably in the second part of the year. Now he just has to learn to control his reactions when his confidence is low. It might not be a big deal to give away signals of diminishing confidence against Moya for instance, but it's lethal against someone like Hewitt, who will derive that extra strenght from it. The same with Lindsay. It might not do any damage against lower ranked players who are in awe of her anyway, but it sure as hell hurts her againt the Williams sisters.

Having said that I'm still proud because of the way Juanqui fought in the match. It was a terrific final and the crowd was ecstatic. He didn't choke because of the big occasion. Just sometimes when he is ahead and serving for the set or match, he gets a bit too nervous (as do I :o ).

Btw, when Ferrero was determined to get a break, you could see it from the onset of the game. He had this look in his eye, total concentration and determination. That's usually when he did manage to get the break. It just goes to show how important the mental aspect is. When he will learn to deal with it better he will be number 1! :D

Just wanted to make a comment regarding the match -

Coming down from 2 sets to none (even if he did serve for the first), and giving him a chance to win shows how far he has come in that regard.

He's looked down and out before, and faded in the lastset - but that wasn't the case this match, where he dug deep.

It's too bad he couldn't have gotten into a groove earlier in the match, but what can you do.

I just hope that he uses these matches to improve, and doesn't let them give him a problem in the future.

This is, in a nutshell, what I tried to say last night. Thanks, Becca, for being so clear ;)

And as for body language--I just want to clarify that I agree with everyone's points about mental toughness and that I believe as his mental strength and fortitude grows stronger, his attitude on court will improve. I mean, lookit--from June to November already a huge improvement!

I think that expending energy being angry--yelling at yourself, the linesperson or the umpire, throwing racquets and generally having a temper tantrum--can be very draining both physically and emotionally and as long as Juanqui doesn't get to that point in a match I think he's okay vis a vis body language. It's dangerous when he gives up, which thankfully isn't happening very much any more :) It's just hard to control sending the signal of vulnerability to Hewitt because I think everyone's still a little intimidated by him. It's like, you have to intimidate or be intimidated, there is no in between.

LOL, I think I just made it worse, not any clearer :o Forgive me, I'm a bit under the weather at the moment and my stream of consciousness is less than crisp.

I totally agree with you Layla. Juanqui did not choke. For this, I need to give credit to Hewitt cos he can really intimidate his opponents. This is one of the reasons he's #1. Moya is successful in beating him cos he is not intimidated by him.

TH - you were totally clear last night - I just wanted to echo that into my own words.

After some reflection and finally seeing part of the match, I was able to think about it a little clearer.

I don't think I've seen him play as well on hardcourts as he did this past week. I think how he played, and what he did - he has it in him imo, to beat the number one player on that players best surface.

A year ago, he wasn't even close.

Maybe next year not only will he have it in him, he will believe it - for the whole match.

But his year started out rough - and if I'm not mistaken he won MORE hard court matches than clay matches. Sadly, his detractors are blind as ever and choose to ignore this - but that is their loss ;)

I hope he has a nice break, and comes back happy and fresh :)

Now my stream of consciousness is the one that is bizarre ;)

I think he's proven that there isn't anywhere for him to go but up. :) I think one of the toughest years is the one after your breakout, and though he won a title in '99 I think '01 was his breakout year. He took 4 titles and ended in the Top 5 for the first time in his career, and it's soooo tough, both points-wise and mentally to retain that degree of play for a year.

I think being injured at the beginning of the year helped him with his confidence. I mean, the RG final--he was actually still injured, but was also coming from a really disappointing clay season where he wasn't able to defend his titles (that Monte Carlo week was amazing, of course, but it was really the only one in the whole season). I think in June, he was still a little hesitant about his play and his confidence in himself and I think it showed.

Now as for the rest of the year, what did he have to prove? Nothing. Maybe it took some pressure off. He was able to play extremely well on the hard courts and I think he would have done better at the Open if the tournament hadn't screwed him over  Anyway, he picked up another title and did well at the indoor tourneys, and ended the year with a winning record on all surfaces  And then at the Cup, he played probably some of the best tennis of his life (at least after that first match), fighting through some really tough opponents. He was nervous in the final and in the end, his nerves failed him at the wrong time. But the mental attitude improved, as well as his game (whoa, the volleys! ), so I see nothing but good things for him. He's proven he's a player to contend with on all surfaces and that 2001 wasn't just a freak year.

Hopefully next year he can break through and win at RG, but no pressure ;)

BTW, love the new thread title :D

VAMOS JUANQUI!!!!!!!!!!

Btw Why is Lleyton called Potato on here?

Hi MM :wavey:

I think its because he looks like a potato and something else to do with him playing on a bad court and..............well to be honest I cant remember!

Hi Emma and Miss Mosquito! :wavey:

I think Lleyton was in a match with Kafelnikov who said something about the court being so bad it was like playing on a field of potatoes. But I'm not sure.

Emma, how was school? And even more importantly, how's your football team doing? And I don't mean Liverpool, I mean the team you play for. ;)

Hi Layla :wavey:

I knew it was something to do with a court ;) lol I love the "how was school, and more importantly hows your team?" thats great :) Well I got my parents evening tomorrow and I got my report card today, mostly B's.But Im only a few marks off an A in English and Pe.

My team havent played for 2 weeks due to waterlogged pitches. But 3 weeks ago we got beat by Liverpool girls which is understandable. But we've won 4 this year out of 7 which is good for us!And thats coming from the vice captain!:D

Hey vice captain! :wavey: :D You have a winning record then. :) It's too bad you couldn't play for so long. Now it's getting colder and colder. :(

You got your report card already? We got those in January. Anyway, B's are great. :) But you really should have an A in Pe (Assuming that's physical education not something else :o ).
