Injured Agassi Quits Masters

SHANGHAI, China (Reuters) - Andre Agassi (news) pulled out of the Masters Cup Thursday with a hip injury hours after his Gold Group loss to Juan Carlos Ferrero left him without any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals of the year-ender.

Agassi had been due to play already-qualified Swiss Roger Federer in a final group match Friday but withdrew injured.

"Andre Agassi is very disappointed," tournament director Brad Drewett said. "He came to the tournament with a hip injury that he sustained in Paris. He aggravated that injury in tonight's match and has been forced to withdraw from the tournament.

"Fortunately, Australian Open (news - web sites) champion Thomas Johansson is available and will take Andre's place in tomorrow's match."

Chloe le Bopper
11-14-2002, 04:16 PM
Well I'm glad that Thomas is able to get a match in :) Hopefully he gives the crowd a good show.

But if TSN doesn't show Agassi - if they show the other match - I'm going to kill something or break someone :D

Does ESPN show it twice, or just once during the day?

TennisHack

ESPN shows two matches, one live and one taped. So they will probably show the Hewitt-Safin match this afternoon.

Agassi Loss Gives Hewitt No.1
By Bill Scott
Lleyton Hewitt captured the No. 1 ranking for the second straight season when lone rival Andre Agassi crashed to a dramatic 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (6) loss Thursday night to Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero at the Tennis Masters Cup.

It's all over for Agassi's dream of capturing the season's top ranking for the second time (1999). The 32-year-old American just couldn't shake off the poor form which led him to an opening loss in the Gold group against Jiri Novak 24 hours earlier.

The match was a roller-coaster ride, with the Spaniard needing five match points for the victory. It ended on a double-fault for Agassi, whose form never hit a peak during two losing matches.

Agassi's usually impeccable game was riddled with errors as Ferrero got his first victory on the board this week. The win also puts Swiss Roger Federer into the semifinals, joining Spain's Carlos Moya.

Agassi's loss gives Hewitt the top spot no matter how the Australian does in his closing Red group contest against winless Russian Marat Safin.

Hewitt's fate was out of his hands - for Agassi to have taken ranking honors, he would have had to win the tournament, a long-odds challenge for the man from Las Vegas.

Ferrero continued the charge of the Spanish Armada, which already has Carlos Moya safely into the semifinals with French Open winner Albert Costa trying to join him.

Ferrero kept the pressure on Agassi from the start, forcing the veteran to save two set points in the tenth game of the opener, finally taking the set two games later as Agassi netted a backhand. The American recovered in the second, but could not consolidate in the disappointing third.

Agassi has withdrawn from Friday's match with Roger Federer with a hip injury. He will be replaced by alternate Thomas Johansson.

Interview:

November 14, 2002

Juan Carlos Ferrero (d. Agassi 7-5 2-6 7-6(8))

QUESTION: I think Andre is one of the best players in the world, so could you get big confidence from beating Andre?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Of course. You know, right now, I'm with a lot of confidence, I needed to win one match here in the, you know, in the group, you know, and I feel so happy right now to win against Andre Agassi. The last time I meet him was in Madrid and he won me very easy, 6?3, 6?2 in hard court, so right now, you know, I won him in clay court, but right now, you know, I won him in hard court, so was a special win for me.

QUESTION: How do you feel about playing on this surface compared to a clay court?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I can't compare this surface with clay court, you know. Here I feel, you know, very good because all my life, I practice on hard court, so this surface I like very much, really.

QUESTION: How do you think about your prospects in the tournament?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: You know, all depend on the next match. I have to play against Novak and Novak or me is going to pass through to semifinal, so depend after tomorrow match, so I'm in with a lot of confidence. He lose today, he won yesterday, so, you know, is going to be a tough match tomorrow.

QUESTION: I noticed that sometimes when Andre won points and he got actually louder applause from the Chinese spectators. Does that affect you?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I get also applause from the crowd, so, you know, don't affect me this.

QUESTION: You beat Agassi today. Is it because you are lucky or is it because your skill was better?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't think it's lucky, you know, I play a great match and I won. That's it, you know, I have to stay level and Andre Agassi if he plays good, or not all the times he has to win, so the other players we can win also the match, so to today was it.

QUESTION: There are three Spanish in this tournament and two in the other group. With yourself alone in this group, how do you foresee the chances of having three Spanish players in the semifinals?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Moya is for sure in semifinal, so one is for sure. Tomorrow if I win, two is for sure. And Albert Costa, you know, it's difficult to say because he's going to play against Moya and wouldn't know. If he wins, I think he's in again, you know, and we can be three in semifinals.

QUESTION: I noticed that both players weren't playing that good in the beginning of the match, like for example both players not playing very well in the first set, but yet you using a lot of energy to serve and using a lot of energy on returning the ball. Was it one of the main factors that you won in the end?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't know for sure, you know. At beginning of the match, I went with a lot of power, you know, and I won 7-5 and the second set, he beat me easy in the second set 6-2 because he plays very good and in the first set, I start to play ?? both players, we play very good set, so I think, you know, is not the energy that I use in the first set, is because I won the tie?break.

QUESTION: This is a question not related to this match, but a lot of the Spanish players don't go to Wimbledon because they don't like the grass. You played at Wimbledon this year, but I'm wondering if you think Wimbledon should take out the grass and put in a surface that makes it more equal for all the players.
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I'm in the Masters, come on, Wimbledon. But I don't have to say this, you know. All the players we have to think about, not if I tell you something about this, if they have to change or they don't have to change. I don't think is a good idea right now, but I think it's great to have one tournament in grass. They don't have to change. We have tournament in all surface. I think they have to change their mentality about they put the seedings wherever they want, you know, they have to put the seedings like we are, you know, in the ranking, I think.

Chloe le Bopper

I know ESPN does that usually, but wasn't sure - but TSN doesn't always show the same match at the same time (this happened during Madrid).

So if TSN doesn't show the earlier match - they were supposed to air at 10am this morning and changed it last night - I'm going to send them buckets of hate mail.

The people at TSN are stupid enough as it is.

TennisHack
11-14-2002, 04:26 PM
Bitchy, bitchy! :D

QUESTION: We still cannot believe that you lost the first two games, you know. I just say that I mention last night, Shanghai seemed to be a miserable place. Do you really think this city, the fans or everybody, the atmosphere, do you feel homesick here or feel depressed? Also so many unforced errors happen tonight, so we still cannot believe what happened. So will you come next year or even want to come again?

ANDRE AGASSI: I've enjoyed Shanghai very much. The only thing I hate is coming to the press conference and listening to questions like that.

They also play the match live here but it's 4am my time. I taped the match already. May be I should watch the tape now instead of watching Hewitt & Safin since I am taping the match on the other VCR.

Got to give credit to Safin to get a set from Hewitt. From yesterday's interview, he already said he was tired, lost his confidence and not expect to win the match with Hewitt and still he came out and get a set instead of letting Johanson play.

And i get to talk to my family on the phone regularly, or write emails, or exchange sms, so they feel close as well.

But having lived here for almost 15 years i still feel very much that i'm a Filipina, even if i've adjusted to the lifestyle here, so going back to the flag thing, that's probably why i'm embarrassed to flaunt it even if i do have the Swiss nationality. Yes, it's Ted Robinson. I'm sure now. I just remembered who's Ernie Johnson.

I like Jimbo also bcos he said good thing about Juanqui. In USO this year, that match against Arthurs, Ted asked if Jimbo can comment on RG final. Jimbo said he couldn't understand what happened bcos Juanqui is a big-game player, that he ALWAYS comes up with the goods in big match, like DC 2000. And then he said he did that for his country but when it came down to individual glory, he didn't make it...Anyway, I fell that Jimbo defended Juanqui and emphasized that Juanqui is such a patriot.

Which match will we get I wonder... I saw Hewitt/Safin today. Was surprised -- I thought for sure it w/be Juanqui!! Will we get Federer/Johannson or Juanqui/Novak??? Juanqui's match is a crucial one for him!

Hi RF:wavey:
I'm just in a good mood today so I feel like being kind, even to unworthy person like AA. That's all. :D Ya, hip injury, shame shame shame. But IF it's real, then I hope he gets better soon:angel:

It's great to see him fight back. Well, not really see him but I was up at 4am to watch the scoreboard when he was down 0-4 in the 2nd. I kept thinking "Think Hongkong" cos that's what he did in Hongkong, losing the 2nd 1-6 and won the TB at the 3rd. And it turned out just the same.

I didn't expect Juanqui's match at all so I wasn't surprised. I don't think they will show Juanqui's match tomorrow either. It's most likely Rogi's, so set your VCR.

But I'm worry about Jiri. He is very dangerous. I didn't see any Jiri match so far, so I'm not sure how he plays in this tourney. Just hope that Juanqui will keep the momentum going.

:) Hopefully Juanqui will be well aware of Jiri's threat -- after all, he did beat AA and got a set off Rogi [damn!]. Besides, Juanqui knows he HAS to win tomorrow or he's out! And he can't be!!! Not our little Juanqui!!

I hear Rebecca cursing TSN!! I could too! On Tue and Wed they showed a scant 1h15m of tennis after the UEFA matches. They cut off so much here and there that it was hardly worth watching OR taping!! I was royally pissed off! It was so important that the next show [can't remember the name of it -- you know that panel thing w that former sportscaster guy -- whatever -- it isn't important] be shown in its entirety!! HOnestly!!

Yep, I guess I better start ordering my tapes now!!

Rebecca -- which video place do you order from?? I have so many matches I want now -- even some old Rafter, Corretja, as well as Rogi and Juanqui!!! I guess that means no Christmas presents for anyone this year! He he! ;)

TSN is evil. The first 2 days are pathetic. The match got cut up so much it's just painful to watch, not to mention that buckaday.com commercial with that woman dancing like a stripper just about drives me crazy.

I'm wondering which semi they are showing now, bcos we only got one:fiery: One the TSN site, it said semi #1, on my other TV schedule site, it said semi #2. I have to call up my sister in the States to tape it for me so it's really important to know which one they are showing. (Of course, I can also ask her to tape all of it, which would me another IOU on her book:) ).

Well, so I wasn't entirely too upset about the TSN thing this week. Bcos it's too important to miss so I beg my sis to tape for me. :D I just hope she didn't tape the wrong channel or forget to put the tape in the VCR or any other disaster like that. I'm looking forward to the American Thanksgiving when she delivers the tape to me:D .

hey Hackie. :wavey: espn will be showing Juan Carlos Ferrero/Jiri Novak as their LIVE 6 am match tomorrow! and you should also be pleased that from 1 - 3 will be Roger Federer/Thomas Johnasson. :D :)

i've been so impressed with espn's coverage this week. i ws afraid they might have cut off the final set of the classic Ferrero/Agassi match today but they stayed with it until the very end. and what a match it was. definitely the match of the tourney so far. :)

Some facts. From Bob Larson's.

Juan Carlos Ferrero (ESP) v. Jiri Novak (CZE)

Both players control their own destiny. Whomever wins will advance to the
TMC Shanghai semifinals as the No. 2 player from the Gold Group to face Red
Group winner Carlos Moya. With those stakes, it is interesting to note that
Ferrero has a 6-2 head-to-head advantage against Moya, while Novak and Moya
have split their eight previous meetings.

Head to Head: Ferrero leads 2-1
2001 TMS Canada, Montreal Hard R64 Ferrero 63 64
2001 Gstaad, Switzerland Clay F Novak 61 67 75
2001 Dubai, U.A.E. Hard R16 Ferrero 63 64

Ferrero Quick Facts
· This is Ferrero's second consecutive Tennis Masters Cup appearance.
In his Tennis Masters Cup debut last year in Sydney, he compiled a 2-1 record in round-robin play and advanced to the semifinals before being eliminated by eventual champion Lleyton Hewitt. Ferrero joins Hewitt and Andre Agassi as the only three players from TMC Sydney who have reached TMC Shanghai.

· Ferrero had a five-match winning streak in China until his loss to
Roger Federer on Tueday. In September, Ferrero won the title at Hong Kong, defeating countryman Carlos Moya 63 16 76 in the final.

· There is the chance for Ferrero and fellow-Spaniards Carlos Moya and Albert Costa to advance to the semifinals of Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai, as stated above. If that were to happen, it would be the first time in the history of the men's season-ending championships that three countrymen from any nation besides the United States reached the semifinals in the same year.

· In addition to winning this year at Hong Kong, Ferrero also won at TMS Monte Carlo for his second career Tennis Masters Series title. Overall, Ferrero has seven career titles, all but two of them on clay. Ferrero's two non-clay court titles were both on hard court: 2002 Hong Kong and 2001 Dubai.

· During the 2002 indoor season, Ferrero's best result was at Basel, where he was a semifinalist, losing to Fernando Gonzalez 64 46 61. Also indoors this year, Ferrero was a quarterfinalist at TMS Madrid, losing to Andre Agassi 63 62.

Today I finally paid attention to what the commentators talking. For the first 6 games, the only thing PMac said was about AA. By the 7 or 8 games, I guessed he ran out of things to say unless how cute Jaden is so he started some comments about the match. Of course, the comments mostly are how brilliant AA was when he won a point or what's wrong with AA play when Ferrero won. You could hear how happy he was when AA was in the front and desperate when AA was behind. Shouldn't a commentator be objective? I don't know whether I was not paying attention before or PMac changed because I didn't feel he was so biased before. Is it just if the players are AA or Andy?

The Moya/Costa match is not going too well. :( They've split the first two sets and Moya seems to be in trouble. Vamos Carlos! Pick it up and win this please.

I feel your pain TH and Vera. You had the same problem with your families not taping the match. :( It happens to me sometimes (my mom sometimes forgets to change the channel) but me and my mom tape so many things (we have 2 VCRs) that accidents will happen from time to time. Of course when it happens in crucial moments like this one, it's heartbreaking.

So Agassi pulled out. :D Chicken. :p Does anyone believe he was injured? LMAO. Of course he could be telling the truth, I just don't buy it. He played brilliantly in the first set against Novak and the second set against Juanqui, so where was his hip injury then? He certainly didn't seem injured at all. LOL, well my FMTT player isn't too hot. He is the king of qualification draws. :p He's had to play qualies on 3 or 4 occasions and is yet to fail to make it out of qualies. How he does in main draws is usually a very different story. :p Actually, he plays his first career final tomorrow, but then, the top 8 players in FMTT just happen to be away playing some obscure little tournament called the Masters Cup. :p

Thanks for your congrats! :) After going through my cupboards, I found that I have some Blue Curacao, some Bundaberg Rum, and a teensy amount of Kahlua. So which April is it? :) Are you an Aries or a Taurus. ;)

I'm the same way. I can't hold my liquor either that's why I never drink on an empty stomach. My stomach is sensitive to alcohol and while I don't really get drunk (well, I do sometimes, but only if I pass the limit) I get horrible hangovers the next day where I can't even get out of bed and have to lie down the whole day and have the urge to puke every half an hour even if I don't eat anything (just drink water). It's so horrible I haven't been drunk in over 3 years. I know exactly when to stop.

Puss-in-Boots
11-15-2002, 11:24 AM
I'm a Taurus :)

I rarely, if ever get drunk, if I get too much alcohol into my system, too quickly (shots absolutely wreck me) I turn bright crimson and get a splitting headache immediately. So I only drink out of symbolism for celebration ( :o ) and if I do I make sure I've eaten first and I always alternate light alcoholic beverages with nonalcoholic.

Yes, he did it. Thank you.

And thanks for a short match. I can't handle the suspense anymore. His first serve is lethal, but he only serves 47%. Anyhow, is he playing Carlos? :) Could have been nice to have a all spaniards final but it's not gonna happen if they meet in SF.

Now, i'm going back to sleep again. Haven't been sleeping much lately, either too upset or too excited. Hope I can do better today. Live scoreboard can be such a hazardous to health:D .

Hi Vera! :wavey:

There's not much to tell. It was a pretty straightforward match. Juanqui had a very shaky start. He was nervous at the beginning, but then he got into a groove and played really well. He wasn't serving as well as yesterday (not enough first serves and only 4 aces compared to 13 yesterday), but it was good enough. My commentators were full of praise for him. One of them said he had all the characteristics of a future number one in the world. :D

He made quite a few unforced errors, especially in the first set, and was unlucky with some very close shots and close calls. But he was determined to win and played very cleverly, mixing the height on his shots and forcing Novak to commit errors. You should have seen his face when he smelled blood (i.e. a breakpoint chance), pure focus and ruthless determination.

I have a really busy morning, so if I don't reply to everything I want to reply, it will have to wait until this afternoon. But the good news is that after today I'm more or less FINISHED with the semester's major work. I will have some finals and a paper, but nothing to the extent of this week. And I have Juanqui playing well and making it to the semis to completely brighten my day. Thanks, honey

LMAO--this was under "World Politics" at Yahoo :D

Hewitt, Ferrero get last two semifinal berths

SHANGHAI, China - Top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt is in the semifinals of the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup, thanks to Carlos Moya.

The defending champion in the eight-man tournament, Hewitt advanced to the semis when Moya outlasted Albert Costa 7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-4 Friday night. If Costa had won, Hewitt's season would have been over.

"It wasn't easy to handle that situation, knowing that if he was winning the match, he was going to qualify, and if he was losing, he wasn't," Moya said. "So I tried to be honest with myself and honest with the sport and honest with tennis."

Juan Carlos Ferrero captured the final semifinal spot when he downed Jiri Novak 7-5, 6-3. The round-robin portion of the tournament ended when Switzerland's Roger Federer beat Australian Open (news - web sites) champion Thomas Johansson of Sweden, an alternate for the injured Andre Agassi, 6-3, 7-5.

Hewitt, who clinched the year-end No. 1 ranking Thursday when Agassi lost to Ferrero, will play Federer on Saturday. The other semi pits Moya against Ferrero in an all-Spanish affair.

Moya squashed all speculation that he might not play his best so that Costa, another Spaniard, could win and reach the semifinals. Instead, Moya's best was just good enough to run his record to 3-0 on the indoor purple court.

What began as a sloppy affair turned into a taut, well-played contest — until the last game. Then, seemingly ready to send it into a decisive third-set tiebreak, Costa apparently suffered an injury and committed three unforced errors before trying an ill-advised drop shot that Moya turned into a game-winning volley.

"I said the other day that two guys who are going to qualify were the two guys who deserve it the most," Moya said. "I think Albert really played well these three days and he deserved to be there. Maybe if he wasn't injured at the end of the match he would be there tomorrow."

Costa said he "felt like I had been punched" while he was walking between points during the last game.

"I was just about to play and I was feeling blocked — not like in Madrid, completely blocked, but very tight. I was feeling bad and I couldn't play my game. That's what happened. Not during the point, when I was walking."

Neither player was sharp in the beginning, but the play picked up considerably in the tiebreak. Each held serve until the 15th point when Moya pounded a forehand into the corner to gain a mini-break. He won the next point, and the set, with a service winner.

The match was 69 minutes old and Costa was just getting into gear. He broke Moya in the second game en route to a 3-0 lead. When he lost his serve in the seventh game, he broke right back for a 5-3 margin, then held to level the match.

Both players were tested in the final set, struggling to hold serve. Then came the injury and the errors off Costa's racket.

"I'm disappointed because I think I was playing very good tennis and I deserve, as the other ones, to be in the semifinals," Costa said. "But tennis is like this, and they qualified and I cannot do anything else.

"I played very good tennis in Shanghai, so I'm very happy. ... I'm proud of myself."

Costa finished the tournament with a 1-2 record. Hewitt was 2-1 and Marat Safin, the fourth member of the Red Group, lost all three of his matches. In the Gold Group, Ferrero was 2-1, Novak 1-2, Agassi 0-2 and Federer 2-0 before his match against Johansson.

Ferrero was just too strong for his Czech opponent. He controlled the points from the baseline and had answers to every problem Novak presented.

After winning the opening set, Ferrero took a 4-1 lead in the second, then was content to hold serve to close out the victory. In trying to keep Ferrero pinned behind the baseline, Novak repeatedly found his groundstrokes flying long. The last one came on match point.

On Thursday, Agassi, the only player who had a mathematical chance to take No. 1 off Hewitt, lost to Ferrero. He then withdrew from Friday's match and was replaced by Johansson.

"He came to the tournament with a hip injury that he sustained in Paris," tournament director Brad Drewett said. "He aggravated that injury in tonight's match and has been forced to withdraw from the tournament."

From Eurosport.com:

Federer, Hewitt, Moya & Ferrero into semis

Saturday's semi-finals of the Masters Cup in Shanghai will see another all-Spanish battle when Carlos Moya faces Juan Carlos Ferrero. After beating last-minute replacement Thomas Johansson in Friday's final round-robin match, Roger Federer meets Lleyton Hewitt in the other semi.

Moya ended the Masters Cup hopes of compatriot Albert Costa with a 7-6 3-6 6-4 victory on Friday, silencing whispers of a Spanish conspiracy. If Moya, already through to the semi-finals, had lost to French Open champion Costa in the Red Group round robin match, world number one Lleyton Hewitt would have been eliminated and the two Spaniards would have advanced to the last four of the $3.7 million tournament.

But now Moya and Hewitt both progress to the semis. Hewitt will face Swiss Roger Federer for a place in the final, while Moya meets fellow countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero who beat Czech Jiri Novak 7-5 6-3. "I am a professional, I had to do my job," Moya said, answering suggestions that he and Costa could have kept Hewitt out. "I tried to be honest to myself, honest to the sport... honest to tennis."

Retaining the title he won in Sydney 12 months ago would be the perfect end to a season in which Hewitt secured his first Wimbledon crown and kept the world number one ranking for the whole calendar year. He is certainly not ruling himself out. "I certainly wouldn't write myself out of it."

After collecting his world number one trophy on Thursday night the jubilant Australian said: "It is out of my hands...but if I get the opportunity to play on Saturday you never know what will happen." Moya's victory gave Hewitt a lifeline back into the tournament.

NO COLLUSION

Earlier in the week Hewitt had called for no collusion between the Spaniards who could have conspired to knock out the Australian, but he need not have worried as Moya took to the court in determined mood.

He broke through for the first time in the sixth game, unleashing a sharply-angled forehand off the back foot that veered away from Costa's lunge and gave Moya a 4-2 lead.

His pale blue shirt gradually darkening under the strain of his exertions, Costa dominated the net against his countryman - at 27 the elder by a year - but Costa continued pounding heavy groundstrokes back at his Davis Cup team mate.

Costa held 15-40 on his opponent's serve but Moya saved both break points with a swinging serve and a delicate drop shot. Two points later Costa had another, and when Moya tried a drop shot he chased it down, flicked it back and took the game when his opponent pushed the resulting volley wide.

WHIPPED GROUNDSTROKES

Riding his momentum Costa held to square the set 4-4 and put the onus back on Moya, himself a former French Open champion and world number one. Costa's timing was spot on as he whipped groundstrokes deep into the court but Moya held to edge 5-4 ahead. Costa held on, saving one set point with an ace. Again Moya moved ahead, this time 6-5 and the pressure mounted on Costa.

He survived to force a tiebreak and even held a set point of his own but Moya proved strong, rifling a forehand on to the line to bring up his third set point and clinching it with a service winner.

Costa was not finished, however, countering with some pinpoint rallying. He broke the rapidly tiring Moya in the second and eighth games and took the set 6-3 despite dropping serve himself.

Both men dug in at the beginning of the decider. In the sixth game, Costa had to hang on by his fingernails and fight off three break points before holding for 3-3 and it was Moya's turn to sweat in the next game when he needed an ace and a flashing forehand winner to stave off two break points and nose 4-3 ahead.

Costa, who has struggled with a lower back injury in recent weeks, called the trainer midway through the next game and received on-court massage as Moya sat on a linesman's chair at the back of the court.

Moya looked shattered but mustered one final effort three games later by racking up two match points and converting on the first with a lunging backhand volley.

Moya, Ferrero Fly Flag for Spain
By Bill Scott

Spain's mighty tennis Armada found smooth sailing in Shanghai, placing Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero into the semifinals of the Masters Cup.

The hottest nation in tennis is missing only Albert Costa, beaten 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 6-4 by Moya in a grueling Red group match on the final day of round robin play.

Ferrero, the Spanish number 1, overcame Czech Jiri Novak 7-5, 6-3 to move into a match-up with Moya, whose game has caught fire this season with four titles after several years of back problems which hindered his progress.

The other semifinal will be contested between Lleyton Hewitt, who renewed the lease on his world number 1 crown for another season after his performance this week, and Switzerland's Roger Federer, a dangerous first-time Masters Cup participant.

Moya and Costa, a pair of French Open winners, dueled for nearly three hours before Moya squeaked out the victory. Costa took on-court treatment for a back problem which troubled him last month and said he was proud of his effort this week in China.

"I'm disappointed not to reach the semifinals, but I've played 100 percent this week and I'm pleased with my performance," said the reigning Roland Garros champion. "I'm playing good tennis.

"I couldn't do any more. The other qualified and I didn't, but I did all I could."

Moya is riding a run of form which has yielded four titles this season and thrust the 26-year-old from Mallorca back into a leading role in the game.

Coming into the match, both men knew that Costa would have to win to join his compatriot in the last four. It was a struggle from the start, with the outcome finally turning on a break of serve in the last game as Moya got through.

"It was a long match, but I didn't expect it to be easy," said Moya. "I'm happy that I played tough. I tried to do my best."

The Spaniard said that the ramifications of the regarding the semifinal lineup made the pressure all that more intense. "But I've been in tough situations before in my career.

"Maybe I've changed because of them. I gave everything that I had and tried not to think of the situation."

Moya won't have much time to ponder anything as he takes on Ferrero for a place in the finale. Ferrero beat Novak for the fourth time in five meetings to earn his place.

My son went to French Immersion school in Calgary for 2 years (kindergarten & grade 1). He repeated grade 1 here because the age for starting grade 1 is older here than that in Calgary.

Most commentators aren't as bad as lil Patrick McEnroe. PMac's only singles title came in 1995 (he was playing Challengers in 93, hahahahaha!) at the Sydney Outdoor (32-man draw). His only major win was over 18th-ranked Richard Krajieck in the quarters.

Ah, this is interesting . . . PMac's h2h against Agassi:

Aagssi leads 4-0

1995 Wimbledon, Grass, R64 Agassi 6-1, 6-1, 6-3
1993 Montreal/Toronto, Hard, R32 Agassi 6-1, 6-4
1993 San Francisco, Hard, R16 Agassi 6-0, 6-2
1991 Roland Garros, Clay, R32 Agassi 6-2, 6-2, 6-0

Mystery solved?

Just wanted to have a quick comment on my involvement in this forum ;)

When this board first started up, I was like *yay* a jcf forum (yahoo clubs don't really do it for me, so somewhere to post with fellow - well informed - fans was great!). If i remember correctly, at first i was worried not many people would post in here and made like 50 threads about anything and anyone ;) Then I realized there were lots of you and I didn't need to do that so much :D

So I cut back for a while, and was buggering off at wtaworld, and hardly posted here at all.

But well I got sick of the lame drama at wtaworld, and had some fallings out with some people who turned out to be something totally different from what they had appeared.

So I can't be bothered with all of that, and it's just wonderful here (isn't it?) :D

It's active, everyone gets along, we talk about tennis but we can talk about other things too -

YAY US ;)

Chloe le Bopper
11-15-2002, 05:24 PM
Anyways my point of all that was this:

I need a little outlet on the net to talk about tennis and such, but also just to vent sometimes.

Sadly, I picked the wrong outlet for a while, and the wrong people to do it too.

But thankfully the "right" place was staring me in the face all along - so thanks everyone for just being fun :wavey:

*tears of joy* ;)

When I was watching Juanqui/Novak match today, I was thinking if tomorrow Juanqui get more first serve in (at least over 50%) and reduce UE on forehand, he has a pretty good chance in winning the match. Also, it's a very long match for Moya today against Costa.

What do you guys think?

:D And yes, I knew Juanqui would win the match by the time he finished the 3rd game in first set when he was down a break.

Lee
11-15-2002, 05:52 PM
For the Rogi/Hewitt match, this should be a no brainer with the way Rogi is playing. Unless Rogi has a big mental lapse and Hewitt find his form in Wimbly......

Chloe le Bopper
11-15-2002, 06:54 PM
Thanks for the pics and such :)

With his record against Moya, and the fact that he seems to be getting better with each match, I think we may see another great battle between these two.

In my opinion, Moya is going to be called the fave since he is on a roll, but given the above, I don't think there is a clear fave.

Hi guys:wavey:

I haven't read the post yet. But I'm anxious to share with you my PMac report:D . They showed about 30 mins of JC's match after Rogi's. It started at 2-1 in 2nd, JC had a break already. The next 10 mins, PMac went on and on of how JC is not doing good on hardcourt. He said JC is supposed to be the one spaniard to lead the pact to do good on hard. Then he said so far, JC didn't show much of a sign that he will do well on hard. PMac thinks Moya and Alex shown they could do the demage cos both of them had won TMS on hard. (That's so unfair, Carlos won his only 2nd hardcourt and the 1st TMS tourney this year, he's 26. And Alex didn't win his 1st TMS on hard until 24.)

Cliffy came on JC's defense, said JC won 2 hards. PMac said, well, those are not big tourney. PMac went on to say, JC is not as good a courter punch as Hewitt, JC is only good on attacking (okay, I thought being aggressive is supposed to be good). And PMac said, JC is also not a good first serve returner like Hewitt. (well, as least he kept comparing him against Hewitt). And he made it clear that he's not expecting JC to win a big hardcourt tourney soon.

Then came Cliffy doing siding with JC. Cliffy said he disagreed with PMac, bcos JC had shown good result on hard. And he said he had put JC down on the book to win a big hard court tourney next year. Then Cliffy decided to stick his neck out for JC. So he challenged PMac for a bet, that JC will win a big one on hard next year. (Oh, I'm totally in love with Cliffy now:D ).

And that came the point Novak sent a drop shot and JC scrambled to the net and hit a brilliant passing down the line. And they both got excited, and finally PMac squeezed out some good comments. Cliffy then mentioned JC beat Moya in HK and had a 6-2 htoh. Cliffy said, maybe we didn't have to wait til next year for that big win:D :D :D .

PMac said sth afterward, continued to disregard JC's good performance, Cliffy said, so you are trying to rationalise your bet against JC now. OMG, LMAO, these 2 are too funny. Never let PMac unattended commenting a JC match without Cliffy around.
:D :D :D

Okay, that's it. It's just too funny.........:D :o

Moya's 'Honest Win'

Lleyton Hewitt's dreams of adding a second consecutive Tennis Masters Cup trophy to his spiralling list of achievements are alive and well as he prepares for today's semi-final match up against Roger Federer - thanks to the professionalism of Carlos Moya.

Had not Moya stayed on court for 2hr 54 minutes in the longest match of the week so far to beat his fellow Spaniard Albert Costa, Hewitt would have been heading home to Adelaide today. A victory would have put Costa into the semi-finals in the Australian's place but a sudden muscle spasm towards the end of the third set ruined whatever chance Costa had of making the last four.

Even if he had not been forced to take a three minute time out for treatment on his back, Costa might have found victory beyond him because Moya was fighting tooth and nail to maintain his unbeaten record in a manner that would have gladdened Hewitt's heart.

"It was a difficult situation to be in but I tried to be honest with myself and honest with the sport," said Moya afterwards. "But, believe me, it was difficult not to think about what the situation was. But because I'm professional I had to do my job."

It will be tough on Moya if he finds himself too tired to play his best tennis against the other Spaniard, Juan Carlos Ferrero today because he could have reserved some stamina had he not bothered too much about the result - a result that was not going to affect him either way.

But Moya's pride shone through and the big man from Mallorca is on the threshold of re-capturing the success of his glory days in 1998 when he reached the final of the Australian Open and won Roland Garros - triumphs that put him on the road to reaching No 1 in the world the following year.

Ferrero ensured himself of a semi-final place by beating Jiri Novak 7-5, 6-3 and will go into the match high on confidence as a result of having beaten Moya six times in eight meetings. Moya won their very first encounter on clay in Barcelona in 1999 and scored another more decisive victory over his young compatriot when they met in Cincinnati last August. But Ferrero has usually been the dominant player in their meetings, although this will be their first match indoors.

Even though Hewitt beat him decisively 6-4, 6-4 when they met two weeks ago at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris, Federer has looked the sharper performer here this week and might be poised for an upset in the other semi-final. Much will depend on the multi-talented Federer's ability to get in and pressure Hewitt from the net, which won't be an easy task on such a slow Greenset court.

Hewitt, already assured of the No 1 position for 2002, will not be content to settle for anything less than the all conquering performance he produced in Sydney last year, however, and this contrast in styles could produce a classic encounter in what has already provided the large Chinese crowds with some fabulous tennis.

Me, neither! I can hardly believe it. Hehe, the Dynamic Duo cracks me up, but at least this time it was about something important and not them sitting around giving each other nicknames (PMac: "You need a nickname." Cliff: "Yeah, everyone calls you 'PMac'--" PMac: "So how about 'C.Dri'?" LMAO!! Yes that was a real conversation!!)

Re tomorrow's match. I think Moya will be the favorite going in as well, but he was on court for 3 hours today so Juanqui does have a bit of an edge there. I think it's going to be thrilling, either way, though for different reasons than the Agassihole match.

GOOOOO JUANQUI!! :bounce::bounce::bounce:

Hehehe, I remembered the nickname thing, it was in TO or Cincy, right?

It's a tough call for tomorrow. Obviously, Carlos would hate that it's JC on the other side. But he did good in Cincy against him. On the other hand, JC is on a upswing on confident, thanks to AA:D (that's about the only worth of AA showing up in Shanghai). So I just hope that he kept his momentum going and put up a good show, helping Cliffy to win his bet:D .
