I have to admit, I really admire anyone who can write poetry. It's not my style OR my strength--I like being long-winded ;) When I had to study it in English class or whatever I always had a hard time with it, and the few poems I've written in my life--with the exception of one--really suck. So I'll just enjoy yours and keeping working on the musical :D

BTW, ILR, I love your Rogi poems :)

Oh, no!

Dani & Arantxa had to pull out of the doubles championships!

But, lucky for Slovene tennis, they are being replaced by Katarina Srebotnik and Tina Krizan.

That's a volatile question to ask at the moment :fiery::fiery::fiery: Now they are saying the governor's race won't be certified until Friday! That makes me even angrier--and on top of it all, today I received a letter from the Republican candidate, gleefully informing me that he voted to drill in the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge (I wrote him a letter protesting drilling after GW Bush was elected), as he is a US Representative!

I screamed. I threw things. I'm surprised security didn't come after me.

Other than that, I'm just peachy.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to take my feelings of frustration, anger, and seething rage out on you guys. :o:o:o:( I need something to divert my attention, LOL ;) Hence trying to find tennis-related stuff!

Maybe I'll go read the Andy poetry thread again, that's always good for a laugh :)

And they promised... That's why I wasn't here yesterday. ;) But that's ok, as long as I have it now. :D I'm over the moon. :bounce:

Some songs take ages to download though, depending on who's online. And you wait forever for the song to download and just before the end, the source disconnects. It takes a lot of patience. But I can do other stuff while it's downloading; like talking to you. ;)

I'm watching Kimmy's match on TV. All the matches, every single one of them, will be on Eurosport. :bounce: Of course Lindsay's match will be on at 4 am, but I'll tape it and watch it in the morning. Kimmy leads 4-0.

Can Anna help Europe lift the Collins Cup? Kournikova Commits To Tennis Ryder Cup
By: Andy Ramsden
Date: October 17, 2002, 10:33pm

Anna Kournikova has agreed to compete at a unique event in December, representing Europe in an event modelled on golf’s Ryder Cup. The three-day tournament is to be staged in Dublin, Ireland, with all proceeds going to charity.

The show begins on December 5 and sees players from the United States lining up against Europe’s finest in a battle for the Collins Cup.

Kournikova will join glamorous rival Daniela Hantuchova on the European team, who play alongside Jelena Dokic, Barbara Schett and Iva Majoli.

The American team is formidable and includes the World’s No. 1 and No. 2 ranked sisters Serena and Venus Williams. Australian Open champion Jennifer Capriati, Lindsay Davenport, and Monica Seles will also represent team USA.

All proceeds from the event go to the Chernobyl Children’s Project, a charity aiding victims of the 1986 nuclear explosion.

Though subject to change, the schedule currently stands as:

Thursday, December 5:
Davenport vs. Schett
Seles vs. Kournikova

Friday, December 6:
Seles and Davenport vs. Schett and Majoli
Serena and Venus Williams vs. Hantuchova and Dokic

Saturday, December 7:
Serena Williams vs. Majoli
Venus Williams vs. Dokic
Capriati vs. Hantuchova

go usa! :bounce:

Colbert´s book is mainly about curiosities.
It will be perfect if you´re curious to know where the word Hobbit came from, or to know that Tolkien created at least 14 idioms to write LOTR, or that he had knowledges in all the following languages:
latin
ancient greek
gothic
ancient nordic (sp?)
Swedish
Norwedish
Danish
Anglo-saxon (sp?? aka ancient English)
medium English
German
Dutch
French

Do I kill them?
Become their friend?
Do I eat them?
Raw or well done?
Do I trick them?
I don't think they're dumb
Do I join them?
Looks like that's the one

I got bugs on my skin
Tickle my nausea
I let it happen again
They're always takin' over
I see they surround me, I see...
See them deciding my fate
Oh, that which was once...was once up to me...
Now it's too late

I got bugs in my room...one on one
That's when I had a chance
I'll just stop now
I'll become naked
And with the...I'll become one

;)

Errr, I believe my cd-burner doesn't have the capacity to copy dvd-formats, but I might be mistaken. I only just got it today. :p You can find entire movies on the net? Those must be some huuuuuuge files. What site do you get them from?

Tolkien was a brilliant, brilliant man. Yes, I knew about the idioms and about the detailed maps of the worlds he created. He really thought of everything. He put so much love and thought into every little details and there were a zillion details to consider. I wonder how he found the time for all that. I can't imagine creating all that in one lifetime. I suppose you could say he was the architect of his world. ;)

As for the movies, they can be found on kazaa. Im downloading red dragon from Kazaa as we talk. ;)

Quite different, yes. ;) The movie is alright, but not nearly as good as the book, or as funny. Still, I enjoyed it. :) Do rent the video.

NO! hitman, I can't see you! :eek::eek::eek:

I'm sorry I left so quickly, guys. My tennis watching buddy called me up and asked if I would watch the Lindsay-Monica match with him and by the time he got here he didn't give me a chance to say where I was going or what I was doing! LOL :o:o:o

Anyway, it's after midnight and I'm dead tired, but I thought I'd give a quick match report. Monica won 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 and she deserved the win. After the first set Lindsay (pardon my French) was playing like shit. It was as if she couldn't care less if she won or lost. Monica was throwing in tons of double faults as well as missed tosses, but finally pulled it together and saved 7 match points in the second set.

In the third set Lindsay was totally and completely out of it. I was shocked and appalled at how badly she played  Sorry Leo and Layla, but if she had somehow managed to win the match she most definitely wouldn't have deserved it. I couldn't believe the mental block she had on herself! It was just huge! Her serve was way loose, and she didn't even try to return Monica's returns of serve! Aboslutely horrible.

That said, ESPN is showing Dani's match tomorrow.

And, goodnight :wavey:

She basically threw the game away. :fiery: :fiery: Please don't take it as I not respecting Seles. Seles kept on fighting but Lindsay have 4 match points at tiebreak and manage to lose the set, not to mention the other match points before tiebreak. I don't know what she and her coach are going to do about this big mental problem and unless they fix it, there is no way that Lindsay being able to challenge the Williams sisters.

Lindsay, please believe in yourself!

Hello, all! :wavey:

I wish I could say I am in a better mood than I was yesterday, but I'm not. Apparently the snotty Republican asshole won the governor's election in my state (and I say "apparently" because it's still not official and won't be until tomorrow) and I'm just sort of numb. I spent so much energy yesterday, fighting, being frustrated, hoping, praying, that I just don't have anything left.

Now I'm just hoping for my day and my mood to improve. :( But until then, I'll take a little advice from Pam Shriver  ;), who said last night that when you aren't confident and happy, sometimes you have to fake it :D

GOOD LUCK DANI!!!! Play your best, girl!!! :bounce::bounce::bounce:

TH, here in Arizona is not much better in the governor race. The Republican candidate does not concede defeat though all analysts believe there is no way he can catch up and so the election office has to keep checking and counting the ballots. The result probably won't be out in another week. This is a total waste of taxpayers money.

After my Gilmore Girls marathon (basically the episodes were about how Lorelai deal with lost love and Rory about to lost love) and watched Lindsay biggest choke in her tennis life, I can't say I am in a good mood today.

Since I won't be good company today, I will go to library and do my long overdue grocery shopping.

Wish everyone here have a good day! ;)

Hi Peedy. Well, I also hope that Lleyton will remain #1. I think he deserves to be #1 this year more than Baldy, that's for sure. And I fear the world will be turned upside down if a 32 years old bald man became #1 in the world.

But I must admit that he's in a tough group (well, though Costa is a bonus). And I also like Safin and Moya more so I have to cheer for them first. So the best way is to have Juanqui and Rogi beat Baldy and prevent Baldy from getting any points to past Lleyton.

I also think the key is the serve, I watched his match against Srichaphan and Safin in Paris, his serve is off. A good serve is so important. I'm concerned with Juanqui's serve, clearly, he got beaten so badly by Baldy, is mainly bcos his serve is terrible and made it impossible to control the point. So I hope these guys can serve a lot better in Shanghai.

:D I just like analyzing matches. So I'm gonna elaborate:D. I watched the whole match of JC and Baldy in Madrid, eventhough it's very hurtful to watch him lost. But I want to know why he lost. It's really his serve, well in the first set at least. When he got his first serve, he was able to control the point and hit winner to win. But when he had to serve second, he was almost in defense immediate. And he probably lost a little edge after the 1st set so in the second set, even his first serve in is not enough for him to take control.

But then I watched Moya against Baldy's match twice, Carlos' first serve is very effective, Baldy just can get it back to play, that left Carlos a lot of room to dictate. And of course, when it's needed, Carlos played defense beautifully. I really hope that Juanqui took note of that Moya's match and make sure he does what Carlos did when he plays Baldy in Shanghai. I'm pretty confident that he can beat Baldy on hard court, as long as he's believe that.

Yes, I saw some of that during the Seles-Davenport match yesterday as well. In the middle of the match, Monica began to get tired, and usually the first thing to go (for the ladies, at least) is the serve. Her tosses kept getting lower and lower, and sometimes she'd drop her head a little and end up with a double fault. She had over 10 dfs last night, which is amazing consider she still won.

ANYWAY, when she had to hit a second serve she immediately went on the defense (except for the one time that she hit a second serve ace) and defense isn't exactly her strength. It's like they relinquish power from the first shot at the ball. I don't play myself, so I don't know if this is true across the board or if it's a confidence thing.

So what lovely things are you up to today?

:) Hi Vera again and Hackie!

I wonder if players watch each others' matches -- they should, or at least their coaches should and point out things. Sometimes I think Cascales needs to help Juanqui with new aspects of his game -- always work on things, like his serve and playing more at the net [which he does a little, which I love!]. You want to tell them things you notice...!

So Hackie how many matches do you get per day for TMC? We only get one!!! I SO want to see the Juanqui/Rogi match!

Re: Maldives again -- I w/love to go to such a place, but only w the right guy... umm... I guess Rogi is taken! OK, Juanqui's free right now! ;)

Travelling... I've been to very few countries but more than once. I like to explore the same places a little so that I become somewhat familiar w them, like London -- I've been a dozen times. You're right though -- so many great places to see out there in the big wide world!:p

Vera

Well, some players have good 2nd serve, so it's not necessarily bad that you have to hit second serve. And also, not every players attacked the second serve as Baldy does. But when you play Baldy, serve is definitely very very important.

I didn't get to watch Monica yesterday, we only get one match of the WTA Championship everyday and it was juju yesterday. But I'm pretty happy that Monica won. I like Monica better, she is a really strong woman. But I always wonder why female tennis players doesn't need to look as fit. I mean, nothing against woman carrying a little more weight, but I've never seen woman in another sports than can look overweight as did the female tennis players:rolleyes: Well, Monica movement is so bad, she just can't get back to the top with that extra weight on. And she's facing Venus tomorrow:(

At the moment, I'm trying to learn some spanish. You know, those language book with a tape thing. I'm trying, anyway.

Hi, RF! :wavey:

I believe we get two TMC matches a day: one live at God knows what time in the morning, and one tape-delayed til the afternoon. We're also getting two matches a day from the WTA Championships, although for some reason we saw 3 yesterday (still haven't figured out why).

Vera, what I can't believe is how much female tennis players are criticized for their weight! (I don't mean your comment, but in general.) I mean, last night all Cliffy (yay, Cliffy's back!!) and Pam and Mary Jo could talk about for a few games was how much weight Monica needs to lose so she'll stop having stress factors in her feet! And how much better Lindsay looks since she dropped so much weight after her surgery!

Not that I disagree with either of these things, but the emphasis on weight is so much more for the women than the men, and I find it a little disgusting. Never once have I heard stress fractures blamed on how much a male player weighed. I *have* heard comments about players who are carrying extra weight being a little slower, but I think that's a given (I mean, you are out there running around all day!). It's another reason why I don't find women's tennis as enjoyable. Not even in the sporting arena can women escape the constant criticism of their looks and weight.

He did improve his serve this year. His serve is bigger than what he used to be. He said while he's injured at the ankle at the beginning of the year, he did a lot to boost up his upper body strength and the result is a faster serve. But he needs consistency. I do think coaches usually do the scouting for the players. And I would be surprised if they didn't watch Moya/Baldy's game on tape.

Though I wonder sometimes if Juanqui needs a new coach, knowing him though, he will stick with Antonio forever, Antonio is like a second father to him. But I think maybe he can get a assistant coach to improve specific thing (like in hockey or basketball, they have assistant coach for defense, offense, technical stuffs....). Sure, variety is good, and if he wants to do better in Wimby...

You know what though, those posters always said if you hate another player, it must be envy. I think it's just the opposite. I like Rogi because he has so much variety, he can do well in every surface. I sometimes wish that Juanqui can have the same. But whatever he lacks though, Juanqui made it up with his mentally toughness. Which is also the reason why I think he's better than a lot of the top players.

I do understand your point. But it is really true though. Lindsey used to be quite heavy in the first few years of her career, she gets fitter and became a lot faster, which contribute to her getting to number 1. I don't think players need to care about their looks and it's certainly not fair to criticize them for their looks because of the extra pounds. But the movement is so important, it's true that you can get to the ball faster if you are fitter. And I did hear about male players having to lose weight bcos of injury. Mark P (I can't spell his last night), aka Scud. He lost about 20 pounds so that his knees don't have to carry so much loads, you know how bad his knees are.

But I certainly know that it's very annoying to hear it from the commentators criticizing players this and that. And of course, weight is really not the main factor that contribute to quickness. Some players are very quick regardless of their size, and some are slow no matter how thin they are.

Great, great points here!!

Yes, coaches usually do go scouting for their players, or if they don't, some other member of the entourage does (fitness trainer, etc). I also would not be surprised if Juan Carlos is studying tapes of his matches against Agassi, as well as Carlos's match. He's probably looking at that RG match and trying to remember what he did to keep Agassihole off balance.

I think Juan Carlos will continue to grow and evolve with his game. He's been successful already in his relatively short career, and there's really no where for him to go but up. He's shown he can overcome an early-season injury and still come out on top, and his game really has changed. One glance at the Davis Cup tape will show you that.

I like that he's coming in more to net and is not afraid to try some volleys. His passing shots are also things of absolute beauty (but maybe I'm biased there :o:drool: ). I also highly doubt there will be a coaching change but maybe Juan Carlos would consider adding someone to help him with his game. He has been training with the same person for over ten years . . . I'm looking forward to seeing how he will continue to adapt his game to grass and the faster surfaces.

Mental toughness can be the difference between winning and losing, especially in tough matches--which are more the norm nowadays, with the tour having such depth.

And that's all I can add, LOL!!

Even now that Lindsay has slimmed down, her weight is still continually brought up! But I understand your point about movement. I tried to convey that in my post, but guess I wasn't very clear :o:o:o

I think weight loss due to injury is more of a side effect rather than the reason for the injury. Mark Philipoussis's knees were messed up before the weight came into play; I believe it was only after his first surgeries failed that it was decided he was carrying too much weight--which, incidentally, he gained when he was recovering. It's a vicious cycle.

Of course body weight is important because one must be fit to play at a high level, but I think it's emphasized more in the women's game than the men's. What's really important is fitness. You have to be in shape if you want to compete at that high of a level, not just skinny. It's also true of real life--being thin doesn't automatically mean you're healthy and in shape.

No, you are not biased. I agreed. And even PMac had to admit that, reluctantly :D, but he just can't not acknowledge the fact in front of the viewers.

Yes, look at Lleyton. Besides the quickness, Lleyton doesn't do anything better in term of skills. But it's his impeccable mental power that worn his opponents down. I really admire him for that. And another good thing about Juanqui is his attitude. I'm sure every lost to him is a lesson to learn and he knows he has a lot to improve. So he never looks too discouraged (except that you-know-what match). But his attitude is right and that will help him get to number 1.

You know though, all I can say is, it's WTA. When the most popular player in the tour is ranked #?? (I can't keep up with the fall), you know what's the problem is with WTA. And I bet they talk more about Dani's look than her play. (Or they just keep saying Dani doesn't want to be mentioned of regarding her look, but when the commentator kept mentioning this point, it's like they are focusing on the look). (Well, it hope you understand what I'm trying to say).

LOL, I said that because my absolute favorite shot to watch him match is the backhand crosscourt passing shot. He has really developed that part of his game this year (and I think it owes to his success during the indoor season). But he showed signs of it in 2000 and my heart skipped a beat when he tried one out on Hewitt.

I think Potato and Juan Carlos could have a very interesting rivalry. They don't meet very often, but when they have, Juan Carlos has decimated him on clay :D and regardless of the outcome, their matches have been a treat.

If this is the beginning of a new Safin, that would also prove mighty interesting.

Yeah. I think the WTA is doing a great disservice to the game, as they are promoting their players' looks more than their shot selection and strategy.

Ahhhhhhhna is ranked #35 at the moment in singles and #9 in doubles.

I hate that Daniela is falling into the "gorgeous looks" category because she has a great game, with lots of room for improvement. As far as I can tell, she is not buying into the second-coming of Anna hype and is ecstatic to just be playing tennis and doing so well (#8 in singles and doubles, yeah!).

I love to see Safin back to the top. But he can't tell himself if this time he can stay. I mean, he looked like a bullet-train in the end fo 2000, winning tourney in rolls, but still...I just wish he can make it to number 1 this time. I'm tired of ppl criticizing him for not living up to his potential. He's such a great person and he don't deserve to be criticized every way he turns.

Well, take a look at Anna and Dani should be wise enough to not follow the footstep. It is indeed talent wasted. I mean, I also was a believer when Anna came on board. But it's downhill since. I never like Mark P. but he admitted himself that he wasted his talent and it's not a easy thing for oneself to deal with, which I felt really sad for him. I think Safin is a classic case of too much, too soon. He is the most naturally-abled player I've ever watched. The whole game, shots, movement, serve selection--it's intuitive to him. When he had his head on his shoulders in 2000 he proved how tough he could be. Then things started getting in the way, but I honestly don't think he could have capitalized any better than he did on that breakout year.

He won a Slam and suddenly everyone expected him to dominate the game. He was only 20 years old, and this is *not* women's tennis we're talking about!! I think it got to him and he started thinking about.

I agree, he doesn't deserve the criticism he gets because he's been pretty damn successful--how many other players can be named who have held onto the #2 spot IN THE ENTRY SYSTEM without winning a title until the last week of regulation play?! Titles aren't everything. He was also pretty consistent at the beginning of the year.

If he ever finds that perfect combination of self confidence and inner calm, he will be unstoppable.

Dani is playing Magdalena Maleeva, and she's still at deuce 5-all in the second.

Anna was a killer juniors player. I think everyone expected her to do better than she has. Both she & Mark enjoyed themselves a little too much and are paying the consequences.

I don't think it's the same thing with Marat. Sure he has his bleached blonde Safinettes and tons of money and I'm sure that Russian penchant to drink ;), but he hasn't lost sight of his ultimate goal--to be a good tennis player, to keep working hard at it. His inital success didn't make him content to rest on his laurels as it did with MP. I think Anna just liked the attention and the fact that she could get out of Russia. God knows I love Russia but it can be a shitty place to live.

I think though, not because he won a GS that ppl expect him to do great. It's indeed how great his game is. It's perfect, in a good day. I mean, he can play without flaws and with ease, like it doesn't take any effort, everything comes natural. That amazed everyone so ppl expect greatness from him. I mean, Lleyton is the perfect contrast, he won 2 Slams and everyday ppl say he don't deserve to be #1, WTF, so Lleyton is not as nature as a lot of players, like Safin or Rogi... but Lleyton has his own quality to make it. But back to Safin, it is a treat to watch him when he's on. I truly admired how much talent he had in his tank. And I think God is fair, it's too much to have someone who is perfect.:D So God decided to play a little game and make Safin vulnerable.

I don't think if I should comment on Anna. I think she wasted her talent. But I dislike her now more than 2 years ago, it's probably bcos I don't like that she uses her beauty to mess up other ppl's life. I, being a big hockey fan, have a lot of respect for the hockey players. I don't know if you knew that Anna used to date Fedorov, of the Red Wings. Fedorov is great, good looking, top tier, once a MVP in the NHL, and he is like Anna's puppy. Sergei (Fedorov) once had to leave the team for a few days to get to Anna bcos he thought he's still her BF, but another hockey player, Bure (which also happened to be one of my fave since he's been playing for Vancouver for about 7-9 years) told the press he's engaged with Anna, who's Bure's neighbor in Florida. I mean, Sergei had gone thru very bad time when he was with Anna, which I'm glad that he is no longer with her. But she had built herself a very bad image. And that engagement with Bure, turns out to be a joke, Anna's joke, needless to say, Bure is completely humiliated.

Hello everyone! :wavey:

I'm here, albeit not in the best of moods (blame it on fasting :p ). I think it's safe to say my favorite finals - Kimmy vs. Daniela or Lindsay vs. Daniela - won't be taking place.

The matches are so weird. I don't know if it's the surface, but those were not memorable matches, such as you might expect from the championship. :( L.A. has been pretty disappointing so far. I hope the men make up for this. ;)

I was really, really disappointed when I saw Lindsay's match today. Wasting 7 matchpoints borders on criminal. I was speechless. All credit to Monica, she fought like a lioness, Lindsay was helping her all the way. Her attitude on the court was appaling and I really hope she learns from this and imporve the mental aspect of her game. During the whole second set, when she was actually in the lead, her body language screamed "I'm gonna lose this match" and you don't want to send such a message to a fighter like Monica. Monica wasn't playing very well, she was still quite rusty, but she deserved to win after saving 7 matchpoints. Good luck against Venus, Monica! :)

Right, I suppose I can go and read your posts now. ;)

Well, I do think Sergei loves her a lot more than anything. I don't know if she even loves him back at all. But the Fedorov family helped Anna's family when she moved from Russian to the States. He has always been very protective of Anna. Somehow, he thought Anna would love him back. I always thought Sergei is a fool, it's quite clear to me that Anna is just using him. She wasn't that famous when she first starts, but that's the time when Sergei in his prime and he was the hottest player in NHL, I mean you got to be hot to won the MVP award. Anyway, all I see is Sergei is dedicated and Anna is using it against him.

And Sergei's brother Fedor is now starting in the NHL, he's same age as Anna, I just wish the 2 family is not in contact anymore. Anna, stay away from Fedor.

i'm happy for Davenport b/c she reached her goal of qualifying for the Championships after playing in just 8 tourneys. but she could have had a MUCH better year. should have AT LEAST won 3 tourneys (LA, Moscow, and Zurich).

i think she was simply satisfied with qualifying for the Championships that she wasn't as determined to actually win there. Monica was obviously the more determined player and she deserves the win. i hope she takes the title now. :) or Kimmy. :)

Can I add anything you haven't already said??

Just that maybe Juanqui could use a coach for grass since he clearly wants to do well on that surface--might eb a good idea.

I too LOVE that crosscourt shot, esp. the BH!!! When it whips across or floats, it's a thing of beauty!! But I am esp. vulnerable to the one-handed BH crosscourt shot a la Federer, Corretja, Haas [even!]... gorgeous! I also loves volleying, and half-volleys too! So quick w that stabbing action! Talk about swashbuckling...

But a well-placed serve that catches the corner is amazing to behold!!! I was just watching Rogi's breakdown of Marat in Hamburg yesterday and am still in awe of his shots! Was he on a roll!! It is so satisfying to watch your faves play REALLY well -- doesn't happen that often! That's why I kick myself for NOT taping Juanqui's win over Guga in ROMA01!! Am I crazy? YES. It must have been awesome...

Dani's match is on now here... well, you can't keep up your high level forever -- thank God these players ARE human. We wouldn't have them any other way.

I'm so impatient for TMCup! Hackie, lucky you -- 2 matches/day! I doubt we'll see Rogi/Juanqui... :(

I wouldn't want to meet her in a dark alley... as for AA -- someone once said somewhere that when he lost a match(!) they figured the drugs hadn't kicked in yet!! One does wonder... he's definitely NOT human. [I feel sorry for his son -- what a father!]

Speaking of fathers... great news that Pat is Aussie of the Year again!!! He's the best!! And I do miss him... is it almost a year since he was in Sydney? Unbelievable!! [Haas apparently said that he thought Rafter should pull out of the TMCup and let him play -- because of Pat's shoulder... tsk tsk!! At that point my opinion of Haas sunk!]

Well, not so lucky me :( I won't be able to watch the matches, though I will have them taped for me. I too doubt we'll see Juan Carlos's first match, although ESPN has surprised us before! They *did* show Juan Carlos and Jarkko at Madrid, so there's still hope.

I was just checking out the downloadable media guide on the Master's Cup site, and I found out something amazing: Juan Carlos has a winning record on all surfaces this year! Here you go:

10-8 indoor/35-15 outdoor
4-3 carpet
19-11 hard
21-8 clay
1-1 grass <-- not exactly winning, but close enough ;)

I didn't follow your American elections because I didn't want to have to look at W's face and hear his voice! It IS scary -- what % of Americans actually voted for him or like him??

Back to tennis: right, your Thanksgiving is right in the middle of TMCup -- bad timing indeed!

If you do see Juanqui/Rogi, make sure you give us a report, even if it's after the fact.

Hmm... will Juanqui be sporting a new hairdo or colour or outfit -- he looked different last year -- had blond hilites and I think a different outfit... hope Marat has sth new [but he doesn't seem to care about how he looks...]! :p

what Hacks, you don't think Monica has a shot of winning? if Venus isn't at her best (she's only played 2 matches since the Open and should be rusty) then i think Seles has a shot. obviously after her first round match we cannot count her out. but she'll have to play really well tho, like she did in Australia.

Hey, RF :wavey:

Bush actually lost the popular vote 51-49%, a difference of about 300,000 votes if I remember correctly. However, we don't use a direct election system, we use an electoral college. When we vote, we actually vote for who our electors will vote for--sorry it's really complicated.

I personally don't know anyone who likes him, but his popularity polls show consistent 50%+ approval rating. I think it might be fixed :o But what I fear now is that no one will stop his legislation and he will turn back the clock 30 years.

His inital success didn't make him content to rest on his laurels as it did with MP. I think Anna just liked the attention and the fact that she could get out of Russia. God knows I love Russia but it can be a shitty place to live.

I think I read it somewhere that Marat is a Muslim (his mom is a Muslim) although not a practising one so he does not drink.

I agree with you Marat hasn't lost sight of his ultimate goal. I think he may like Sampras. Sampras won his first US open in 90 and then his second slam in 93. Marat won US open in 2000 so next year may be the beginning of Safin era.

Anyway, moving on...

Yes, Marat is a muslim name. :) I heard he has that origin too

Its not exactly upsetting, I just think most of the things people say about her are unfair.
We will never know what goes into other people´s head, but to say she USED Fedorov is a bit too much. No one spends YEARS of their youth with someone a lot older to use them. I dont see it that way. I think Enrique is a twat, btw, and I liked Sergei.
I just dont think an international superstar would care to write and talk to their fans on a message board if she was that bad. Just that.

Vera

Vera, dont worry. Im very open to anyones opinion on anything. Ill just dont stay quiet if I disagree. And especially when I have a reason for it. But hey, I was there in the fan club and got to know those things. Some friends were there and know too. Most of the people, though, have no clue Anna can be a humble and nice person when she is away from the cameras.
Im not mad or sad at all. Dont be ashamed of what you say, being open to change your mind, or even just to listen to the others is good enough. :)

Well, I do sometimes think that we are passionate fans here so it's better to be careful of what we said here. I really like chatting with you guys so the last thing I want is to offend anyone here.

Thx for the hugs.

I saw that Bagel Stud had deleted the Andy Poetry thread. And I was just thinking, ya, it must be awful that so many ppl are writing bad things about Andy (including me). I was very careful with my poem though, trying to use the fact as much as possible. And the gay thing, I never really think or care if he's gay or not. But anyway, I admire Bagel Stud for enduring these abuses for so long.

The Andy Poetry thread is gone?!

Well, it did descend into an ugly mess at the end, when the newest members first saw it and took great offense :( But it was a great thread :(:( Oh, well.

And believe me, if you ever offend someone here I'm sure they'd let you know in such a way that there'd never be a question of their intentions. ;) But most of us are pretty level-headed and easy-going, so it'd take a lot to really upset us.

Vera
11-08-2002, 03:13 AM
To be honest. I think I wasn't very objective about Anna. I was very upset at the time when the Bure incident happened. Like I said, Bure was completed humiliated, and knowing Bure (he was the soul of Vancouver back in early 90s), it must be a tough pill to swallow. And then Fedorov took a leave from the Wings in a regular season, that's unheard of. I mean, players don't even take more than a day or two when their wife gave birth, and there he left the team in a regular season...

Anyway, I always think I try to be objective but I guess it's hard to do when you are passionate about something or someone...

You know, that's actually what started this whole thing!! The Republican candidate was my US Representative, and shortly after Bush was elected and started pushing this insane plan, I wrote to both of my senators and him and asked them to please consider voting against the project.

This guy wrote me back and basically said, "I don't agree with you because Bush is God, so fuck you! But hey, vote for me for governor of the state!"

I received another letter yesterday, where he gleefully informed me that he voted for drilling in ANWR.

THAT'S why I've been so upset about the whole deal.

Bush is incredible. I was overwhelmingly pro-Bush in 2000 (because I went to school in Texas and he was pretty good back then). And I'm 200% against him. I just can't believe he twisted things so much and wanted to go war with Iraq. I mean, we are all against terrorism but not many of us believe attacking Iraq is the solution, is it? Anyway, if there's any consolation, our PM in Canada is as worse, he's like, losing his prime but refusing to go. It's a shame for Canadians.

It's just really difficult when we are all losing our faith in our government. I used to watch West Wing for the past season. But I was so sick of politics these days I can't even bear to watch political drama on TV.

"A powerful moster, living down
In the darkness, growled in pain, impatient
As day after day the music rang
Loud in that hall, the harp´s rejoicing
Call and the poet´s clear songs, sung
Of the ancient beginnngs of us all, recalling
The Almighty making the earth, shaping
These beautiful plains marked off by oceans,
Then proudly setting the sun and moon
To glow across the land and light it;"

I am so liberal, LOL, that I was against Bush from the start. I remembered his father's administration, and knew that Baby Bush wasn't smart enough to run the country by himself so would probably be a mere puppet in the hands of Daddy Bush's advisors. Which is exactly what happened.

I cannot stand Bush, but was thankful that the Democrats won the majority in the Senate to keep at least one legislative house from the grips of the Republicans. Now, for the first time since Eisenhower (the 50s), all of Congress and the White House is being controlled by the Republicans, and I honestly fear what will happen.

The first thing Bush did in office was ban funding for Planned Parenthood overseas. I don't even want to know what's going to happen next. I have a friend in the military and seriously fear for his safety.
