No, I'm not offended. I can understand that we all think differently. But to say that Tim is not a good father only bcos of him deciding to go to Shanghai is quite unfair to Tim, IMO anyway. So I just want to say that in the thread and I'm not trying to argue with you.

I'm in fact quite indifferent to Tim as a player, but as a person, I think he's a very nice gentleman who grows up in a family with good tradition, I'm pretty sure that he is a good person. Professional athletes like basketball and hockey players don't even get to spend time with their new born. Of course, they are contract-bounded. But also, they are committed to their career. I just have a lot respect for that.

:) Tim or Thomas as alternates? What about BOTH of them? Didn't they need 2 alternates recently -- 99 or 2000?? With Novak's injury I doubt he'll do much -- he could even retire/withdraw! Surely Thomas winning the AUSOPEN takes precedence over AndyPand!
:p

I think Tim is a very nice gentleman too. My comment (the thumbs down) is more about this particular incident and one single incident does not reflect on a person as a whole.

I still remember the incident where Gretzky's wife was hit by a fallen glass during a Rangers game and she was unconcious for a while. Gretzky stayed with the game instead of leaving with his wife.

Hi RF! :wavey:

Vera
11-05-2002, 07:48 PM
I think they usually have just one alternate. Novak should be fine though, I think he said he recovered completely before the TMS Paris match, though we all know that's a lie:p But there's 2 weeks in between his lost in Paris and Shanghai, should be enough time for a "serious" thigh injury.

Vera
11-05-2002, 07:49 PM
I mean for a "serious" injury to recover. But of course, also enough time for any of the 8 to get themselves a serious injury:p

Since they have to pay the standby guy no matter he play or not, they are not likely to have 2 alternates.

Hehe, I'm a big-time hockey fan. I also love the atmosphere and I don't mind the aggression at all. The hit is great but I don't like fighting, which I think don't happen too much in Europe though, right? Because I think only the North American hockey players fight, European are a lot more civilized:) and not into the rough.

Aebi is quite okay, of course, he will never grow out of the shadow of Roy, who's the best goalie ever:rolleyes: in NHL. So who else is Swiss in the NHL?

Lindsay Davenport: Home ground

She only appeared on the Porsche Race to the Championships in late July, but an injury-plagued season has ended in triumph for Lindsay Davenport, who will play the last event of 2002 in her hometown.

Sure, it’s been 10 years since Davenport went through a season without a singles title, and she’s currently outside the Top 10 for the first time in six-and-a-half years. But in relative terms, Davenport’s return from knee surgery in January has been an unqualified success.

It was at last year’s Championships in Munich that the Californian’s career was put on hold, hurting her right knee on the second last point of her semifinal win over Belgian Kim Clijsters. The injury prevented her from contesting the final against Serena Williams and the first seven months of season 2002, for that matter.

Needless to say, Davenport is keen to make amends this year, especially playing in her native Los Angeles.

The 26-year-old’s qualification for LA has been nothing short of a miracle, but is also testament to Davenport’s careful rehabilitation and determination to make the season-ending event. In just eight events this year, she has reached four finals, three semifinals and a quarterfinal.

In three of those finals, Davenport was nailbitingly close to victory – she served for the title against Chanda Rubin in Manhattan Beach (LA), lost a third-set tie-break to Maggie Maleeva in Moscow and held a match point against Patty Schnyder in the Zurich final.

Nonetheless, Davenport says her return to the Tour has exceeded her expectations, and playing in LA, whatever the result, is the icing on the cake. Being there, she says, is the crowning glory of her abbreviated season.

Who could argue with that?

I occasionally wander into gotennis but I hardly post there. I use the same name there. I posted a few in WTA and was attacked (I probably a little bit oversensitive here) by a sisters' fan after my comment on Henin of her accusing Lindsay faking injury. LOL, sure I like Hacks. Interesting all of the nicknames I've acquired here ;)

Yeah, I thought so. As someone else so crudely put it, "Why would they pay two non-playing players when they only have to pay one?"

from the official site:
Johansson Takes Alternate Spot

Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson will serve as the alternate for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai after fellow Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras announced that he would not be making the journey to China.

This year, the 27-year-old Swede finished in the Top 20 and as his country's No. 1 player for the third time in his career.

In January at the Australian Open, Johansson became the first Swede to win a Grand Slam singles crown since Stefan Edberg captured the US Open in 1992. He posted wins over countryman Bjorkman in QF, Novak in a five-set SF and Safin in four sets in the final. He came into the tournament No. 18 and cracked the Top 10 afterwards at No. 10.

He did not reach a final the rest of the season and returned a 20-21 match record. His best results were a SF showing in Dubai (d. Henman, l. to El Aynaoui), and the QFs at TMS Monte Carlo (l. to Henman) and Halle (d. Ljubicic, l. to Carlsen).

He withdrew from the US Open due to a right shoulder injury and missed seven weeks before returning in October. He played the final five weeks of the regular season and compiled a 3-5 record, reaching the third round at Tennis Masters Series Madrid (l. to Calleri) and the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris (l. to Agassi).

My field (psychology) is pretty group oriented, but at least we all have common goals and hopefully, common work ethics.

But for your basic "do-a-presentation/report/paper-on-blah-blah-blah", I think it's just as important to know how to do all of those things YOURSELF as opposed to a group.

In this day and age, its too hard to coordinate everyone's schedules anyway :D

I was mediocre in the lab.... it's a long story why I ended up doing chem. In fact, my PhD is in computational chemistry   :p I actually started off as an experimentalist, but I found out I absolutely hated it, so I moved to computational work.... Yeah, maybe, but computational chem sounds damn impressive.

Puss-in-Boots
11-06-2002, 03:25 AM
I guess it sounds impressive, but what I did wasn't so spectacular.... just pump a lot of calculations using a well-known computational chemistry program and interpret the output and write it up.

Maybe 20 years ago it would have been a big deal, but these days, applied computational chem is so 'black box' in nature. Just feed structures into the program and see what it gives you. Anyone with a chem degree could have done it. I was more interested in the mathematical theory behind comp. chem. but nobody in the chem department really works in that. I decided last year that I wanted to work with the math, and not just keep plugging things into a computer program and processing the data, so I moved to the math department.

TennisHack

Ah, okay. So basically it's a degree in being able to use a computer program? That deflates it a little ;)

And, completely unlike you, through a computer program is the only way I can handle doing major calculations. Math gives me hives, LOL.

Puss-in-Boots

Exactly... it's basically a PhD in using a computer program... :o

I'm comfortable with math, I guess... my math marks as an undergrad were actually better than my chem marks... I don't know what possessed me to do grad school in chem.

Oh I see.... well... I'm not a US citizen so I don't know too much about the specifics of what's going on, but I generally lean to the left and so I'm hoping the Dems get control of the Senate...at least for the sake of having some balance in the government.

The Dems are very vulnerable right now in the Senate, they've lost one seat for sure :( I hope they keep control as well, and the night is still young . . .

You'll know if the Republicans gain control of the Senate, all hell will break loose.

and did you see the preview for next week's eppy? looks like the Dean/Rory relationship could FINALLY be over. thank god! they're so boring together.

I have the show taped and I am planning for a GG marathon since I haven't watched them for 4 weeks. I think last week's is a re-run.

The show runs from 7-8pm my time here so it is difficult to watch without my son interrupting me. Therefore I usually tape it and watch during day time. Also, I don't have to wait for the commercials this way.

I don't like Sherry from the beginning. I can't see what Chris find in her while he knew Lorelai still had a little crush on him. Anyway, talking about them still hurt a little bit. I almost cried at the big confrontation screen between Chris and Lorelai in her parents' house and she told Chris that she was hurted badly. *big sign*

I know Dean and Rory will be over soon. The last episode I saw (may be the preview I'm not sure anymore), Dean already sensed they are over and actually try to force the issue with Rory.

I am with you TH! Bush really scares me! May be there should be a law that the President of US should have certain IQ. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do since I am a legal alien in US (as the song from Sting) and I can't vote.

The thing I am really worried now is that old saying of 'like father like son' is so very true most of the time.

I'm planning on participating a lot more in this forum, but my internet is down, so I have to post from the library now, wich is not ideal might I add. The reason for this post is that i finally found a good reason for all my German classes over the past years :D :
3. Platz Juan Carlos Ferrero

Wer drauf steht…

Well, I was actually waiting for you to come back, because if you'll notice, I told everyone how I imagined them while they were actually here :)

This is how I imagined you (before the stuff you told us today): I imagined you to be of medium height and build, pretty athletic and sporty (since you ride your bike & walk most places), with shoulder-length brown hair. For all my love of the Slavic peoples, I never imagined you to be "Slavic" i.e., pale or dark-skinned with black hair and dark eyes. From the way you have dressed yourself in the story :D, I imagine you to have a nice figure, hence the medium and sporty build. Just like everyone else, I imagine an open face that's fluid with your emotions.

I think I might be further off the mark with you, LOL, than I was with the others I tried to describe.

TH, you're not that far off. I'm quite short. I don't know about inches but I think I'm about 5'1 or 5'2. My figures varies a bit, depending on what time of the year it is. :o But yeah, I'm quite sporty most of the time, unless I get too lazy and baloon. Don't know how open my face is, but I've been known to hide my emotions rather well. My hair is indeed light brown. It used to be blonder but it's getting darker every year. It's longer than shoulder-length though. My face is quite Slavic though, fairly round. I think I look better with my glasses on. :o My eyes are of an indefinite color - blue-gray-green, can't really tell.

Right, I have to say goodbye now. My burritos beckon. ;) Plus I'm going to the movies after dinner - Red Dragon. :bounce: Can't wait to see it, the cast is excellent.

It is possible for Juanqui/Rogi final. 2 players from each group advance to semi-final. So if Juanqui and Rogi come out as 1,2 or vice versa and beat the guys from other group in semi and there comes your Juanqui/Rogi final.

Damn, he can't get a break from any draw this year:fiery: And Gagassi is so lucky to not be in Moya's group, I'm sure AA is happily jumping up and down now.

Pls, Juanqui and Rogi, do you magic and get to the semi together.
