http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20021103/capt.1036362446spain_fed_cup_tennis_xpw115.jpg

Arantxa Sanchez-Vicarioof Spain cries after a heckler in the crowd shouted at her during her match against Janette Husarova of the Slovak Republic during the Fed Cup tennis final in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, Spain Saturday Nov. 3, 2002. Husarova beat Sanchez, 6-0, 6-2, and the Slovak Republic won the cup by defeating Spain, 3-1, overall. (AP Photo/Ramon de la Rocha)

:sad: so sad :sad: Arantxa is such a nice person and doesn't deserve that crap :sad: :fiery:

now i feel bad for Spain.

Leo7
11-04-2002, 01:13 AM
oh, but this is nicer:

As the second set got underway and it was clear a rout was underway, a Spanish man in the crowd screamed out to Sanchez-Vicario that if she were not healthy enough to play, she should yield to Magui Serna, who had stood in for her Saturday and lost to Hantuchova.
The crowd in turn started screaming at the man, with neighbors in the stands pointing at him angrily and telling him to leave. Sanchez-Vicario started crying on the court, and pulled the collar of her shirt over her face to hide her tears. She got a standing ovation.

The crowd then started shouting her name rhythmically: "A-ran-txa, A-ran-txa."

Play was delayed for 10 minutes. The people in the row with the heckler got up and left, leaving him sitting their defiantly and refusing to leave.

Sanchez-Vicario said she is used to hearing comments from the stands but was a bit sensitive Sunday because her team was trailing and she was injured.

"I am only human," she said. "The ovation made up for what that man said."
~~~~~
awww, how nice for them to give Aranxta a standing-o :)
WOOHOO!!
Hey, sounds good to me. Although I'd rather see Juanqui kick Blady's ass and further retard him from claiming the #1 spot.
The only way Marat could take over is if both Agassihole & Potato lost all 3 of their matches. I don't think it's possible for Juanqui to be #1, or anyone under him :(
Leo7
11-04-2002, 01:28 AM
i don't think it's possible for Marat to be #1 either. from what espn showed on tv today, Marat is 198 points behind Lleyton and can only gain at most 150 points from Shanghai... but i know that Safin can overtake Gagassi and reach #2. i hope he does it, as long as its not at Juanqui's expense.
:) Arantxa did not deserve such crass insensitive heckling after all these years winning Fed Cup for Spain -- she was injured. Such a shame these things happen at the most crucial points of one's career -- like Pat Rafter last year in DC!! Pobrecita!! She's one of the best ever! [and she's not just a claycourter either, so there!] She's a fighter to the end [something some of the younger players could learn!]
It was a great win for Slovakia -- but Daniela pretty well carried her team [like Rogi in Switzerland!]!
Well, at least from the semifinals on, Janette Husarova played a HUGE role. She won both of her matches against Italia and won the deciding tie against Spain. Dani won two matches against Spain, but just like Juanqui in Davis Cup, Husarova deserves her title of "hero" :)
I'm still hanging around the forums! Hey, maybe if anyone knows Chinese, they can surf some tennis news about Shanghai and post them for us -- photos, that is! Or translate some info??
Did someone already post something re: TMC round robin schedule?? I can't remember -- how many matches per day? Each player plays 3 round robin matches, right? Then what happens? Finally, the player w the most points from each group [I wonder what they'll call the groups...] plays each other in the final.
Better check out the Shanghai site I guess! :p
If I'm not mistaken, the format will be 2 sets of RR matches for two days (maybe three?), then two semifinals and a final. Consequently, the tournament doesn't actually begin until Tuesday or Wednesday :eek:
Each player plays 2 RR matches. The players that lose both are completely out. The players that win both (if possible) move on to the semis, or if 2 players from each group win one match and lose one match, those to players move on. OR, if one player wins both matches, and one player wins only one match, those to players move on. It's kinda complicated :o
I don't know Chinese but I'm pretty good at moving around websites--you just keep clicking until you find what you need! Surely there's an English equivalent out there somewhere--or else there's always Google's beta translator.
RogiFan
:) Hi Hackie!
It is complicated and I can't remember the format from last year! :rolleyes:
So Micha is Swiss w an American accent. Rogi has an American accent too altho I'm not aware that he has ever lived in the States. I think Rogi has a natural gift for languages anyway -- he could learn Spanish no prob!! Has to hang w those Spanish guys more -- like Juanqui, Carlos and Albert in Shanghai!!
Hey, look what I found:
Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai Schedule
My favorite has to be when they claim "the haters are jealous". Excuse me, jealous of what?! :rolleyes:
You have to be able to take the criticism along with the praise. It's not like we got all bent out of shape when TC called Juan Carlos "Cold Fish", and even the Lleykis have calmed down over the Potato thing.
Oh, pls don't be upset at those ppl in GM. I don't understand those ppl, they want to know why others don't like their fave, but when someone said something, they got all offended and yelled back. What's the point, why do they have to care. I mean, if they can find something to like about Andy, then go ahead and like him regardless. :rolleyes:
Hehe, I like your poem though, it's way too funny. :D
If I remembered correctly, Bastl and Michel's dad are both prof. hockey players in the minor league here in North America. Which means they both live in the States when they were kids. Or was it just Bastl's dad was prof. Hockey player? Anyway, that would explain the American accent if Michel lived in the States before. And Rogi indeed speaks perfect english.
Yeah, I know I'm closing in on 4,000. Another milestone :o:o
It's only George's dad as far as I know. George was actually born in the US and lived here for quite a few years :eek:. In all of my info-hunting on Michel I've never seen anything about an extended stay in the States for any reason other than tennis.
You are definitely good at it, so keep doing it. I enjoy reading your poem and horoscope. You know, I read my horoscope everyday on Yahoo, then you started writing it for Layla and they looked so alike. It makes me wonder how true those horoscope are:D but then, I think the key is probably to write something vague and general and a person's mind will do the work by applying the reality to validate the horoscope.
Oh, no. I certainly don't mean that you copy them. I mean they are similar in the tone and the makeup of how a horoscope is presented. I think you do get the essence of writing a horoscope so it makes it very believable, that's all. I really mean to say this as a compliment.
Yes, as far as I know there is professional hocky in Switzerland (perhaps Mrs. B is a better person to ask :o). Michel played on the national 18-and-under team when he was a teenager but reportedly preferred the individualism of tennis to a team sport.
I hate people who are oversensitive like that :mad::rolleyes:
Hmmm, I'm not so sure. I'm having second thoughts about this issue. I don't know what this is about yet (I came in here first), so bear with me. True, the oversensitive fans are annoying, but I'm beginning to understand how they feel if their fave is constantly being ridiculed and called names.
I'm becoming quite annoyed at all the shit that's been thrown at Tim. :mad: I saw a similar thread on wtaworld today. I'm sorry but when people laugh and bounce and throw a party following an articule about Tim being injured and possibly missing the Australian Open, that's just mean and sick. In my book, injuries are off-limits. We all know how prone players are to getting injured, it's a player's worst nightmare, so I'd appreciate some sensitivity. Their fave could get injured too. I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate if I laughed my ass off at the news.
A few days ago I mentioned a list of players I dislike, but I can't imagine starting a thread celebrating their failures. Wooohooo, so and so is out! I guess I don't want to hurt someone's feelings on purpose. If I just remember how crushed I sometimes am after a particularly bad loss by Juanqui, I too become sensitive shortly after that loss and the last thing I want to see is someone making fun of him, because it just drives the nail deeper.
That being said, I think those poetry threads are really funny and I distinctly remember I enjoyed the one about Tim. I know good-natured humor when I see it. Unfortunately, that can't be said of all the mockery going on on atpworld.
omg this is the best news ever:
Restored Rafter hints at a comeback
November 5 2002
Patrick Rafter has given his strongest indication yet that he may resume his stalled tennis career.
Rafter helped launch John Newcombe's autobiography in Sydney yesterday and said he was close to deciding whether to return to tennis in the new year.
Rafter hasn't played since last year's Davis Cup final loss to France but has received the all-clear from doctors to start playing competitively again.
"The stress fracture in my arm has settled down. I had that tested and the body seems to be in pretty good shape at the moment," Rafter said.
"But (the body) doesn't say that if I did come back, it wouldn't break down again.
"It's hard to say."
Rafter has played his cards close to his chest all year, often saying he was enjoying life without tennis and certainly not missing the grind of the constant training and travelling.
But he hinted yesterday that the prospect of a comeback had been on his mind when he said any possible return would have to be for at least two years.
"It would have to be a couple of years, because I sort of wasted the last year. The next year it'd have to be an introduction year before you get back into it again," Rafter said.
"If you do come back, it's probably (for) a couple of years of hard grind again.
"And then that's the decision that I've got to work out - whether or not I want to do that.
"It's hard to imagine, I couldn't come back full-scale. My schedule would be probably very limited."
The 29-year-old Queenslander refused to speculate on when exactly he would return, if he did.
Rafter and his model partner Lara Feltham celebrated the birth of their first child, Josh, in August, but the couple's son wouldn't stand in the way of the one-time world No. 1's return.
"That just means if I did come back, the little fella would have to be beside me," he said.
"Lara and Josh would have to be there with me."
Rafter, the 2002 Australian of the year and dual United States Open champion and Wimbledon finalist, admitted to feeling pressure from the public to pick up the racquet again and return to competitive tennis.
He felt a responsibility to play Davis Cup for his country, but said ultimately he would make the final decision.
Some days he wanted to return and others he didn't, Rafter said.
A Davis Cup triumph and a Wimbledon title, after two close calls, remain the biggest gaps in Rafter's glittering curriculum vitae.
Newcombe has long been urging his former Davis Cup charge and regular golf partner to resume his career and try to complete his "unfinished business".
Newcombe said yesterday he believed Rafter was still capable of doing so, although in his book he didn't expect Rafter would be seen on court again.
Asked if that was the case, Rafter said: "Time will tell. It's always hard.
"I've been saying time frames all year. And a month goes by and it's already gone and I think, 'Oh geez, I was supposed to make one'.
"But I'm sort of just hanging on, hanging on. And when I make the decision, it will be final."
Well, what I meant was the oversensitivity like what caused riffs with the Lleykis, i.e., my player can do no wrong and can not be ridiculed by anyone. The whole nicknames thing is all in good fun, and though we occasionally get angry with a player (Gonzo :fiery: or Paradorn, for instance) it's not genuine hatred like these people like to believe.
I totally agree with you, it crosses the line when it becomes malicious. I could never start or participate in a thread that celebrated a player being injured or getting knocked out of a tournament. That's why I jumped all over jrm about being so damn gleeful when Tommy Haas was losing in his match.
We even sat here and bitched about Srichaphan's fans starting threads after his wins because it was obnoxious, so yeah I do feel a little hypocritical. I just don't want to be mistaken in my intention of my original post up there. Most of those early threads were all in good natured jest and shouldn't be taken as a mortal insult.
There's professional hockey in CH.
Michel Kratochvil's father played once for the Bern ice hockey team, SCB. This club has the highest number of spectators in Europe. The current coach of our team here is Canadian, Kent Ruhnke. So is the coach for the national team, Ralph Kruger. There are 12 professional teams in this country, but they want to reduce it to 10.
In the NHL, there are 2 Swiss goalies. One is with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Martin Gerber, and the other, David Aebischer, plays for the Colorado Avalanche.
i am only 5'2", weight about 52 kilos, but have a mean forehand! ;)
I shaved my long black hair in February so now it's cropped short, and i do have brown eyes, dark, and am perennially brown skinned.
I don't wear glasses, but keep ones for reading. ;)
Unfortunately i don't play like Amanda, Leo :( She's too good, but i can run fast as well, just have to work more on my stamina, but since i've not been playing in local tournaments this summer (i did play doubles) then i've been lazy on my butt. My serve is still pretty weak, so i'm working on that one, that's why i go to an instructor now and then to help me out. But basically i play for fun, although i enjoy the competitive part...;)
HB to Leo's father! :D
The number one reason I am a Guga fan is his smile comes from his heart. He does his best to win his games and he is always happy no matter he win or lose. He entertains the fans with his tennis, not dramatic on the tennis court. He really loves his fans, his country and tennis. He never exaggerates his injuries. Oops! This is not a Guga fans forum and I am nagging. Sorry! :o
You're probably one of the only posters I imagine to be like their favorite player. I imagine you to be tall and lanky like Guga, with long(ish?) dark hair and a perinnial tan. You are very easygoing and usually very happy, so I imagine you to also have an open face with either a smile or some silly look all the time (since you like to do this :p all the time).
That's actually a very interesting phenomenon, the variation in mental imagery. Perhaps it ties in with language as well? Who knows.
..::beats back the psych major in me for a moment::..
Well, my little sketches, besides some sort of physical trait, were mostly the way you present yourself on the board and what I personally associate that with. Like I said before, everyone here seems to ME to be athletic even though I don't really have grounds for that (though ILR is constantly talking about her sports stuff). Everyone is honest and happy and passionate, and I associate those particular concepts with particular facial expressions or ways of communication.
All I was saying was, I imagine certain physical traits go with certain characteristics. For instance, being happy and talkative means I think you have an open face. Open face = it's clear to tell your emotional state, and you look like you have nothing to hide.
Okay, I think I'm putting you to sleep, so I'll stop :o:o:o
You are now, officially, my favorite Lleyki ;) The Potato Peelers thread didn't cause a big stink, but another thread about Lleyton and his behavior after TMS Canada (I believe it was) did. Big fight in General Messages which I will not dig up because it deserves to stay buried. At any rate, some of us had clashes with some of the more ardent Hewitt fans and since it has quieted down enormously. I think we've shown we're all big boys and girls and don't need to hold grudges.
Oh, I love a good battle myself. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a good bitchfest, so I visit MetaTalk (http://metatalk.metafilter.com), which is the questions/complaints section of nerdville. That have some real doozies there :eek:
"Troller is looking for a response...ANY response, and he will chum the waters with complaints, insults, compliments, and inflammatory tidbits hoping that someone...ANYONE, will take the bait. Generally quite harmless - practices a form of catch and release. Nonetheless, he can upset the delicate ecology of a discussion forum. Once a forum becomes aware of his presence, however, all feeding activity ceases and Troller must move on to more promising waters."
These are the kind that inhabit MeFi. Anything to ruffle feathers. :rolleyes: I've also seen a few instances of this at the WTA board, whether the posters mean to or not.
Wow! ATPWorld is definitely up there on the maturity level, but WTA? You must visit some stone age boards! :eek::eek:;)
Of course, what can I say? I don't visit a lot of different message boards anymore, but I've definitely seen instances of almost all of the Warriors (where do the Toxic Grannys hang out?!). I haven't seen too many instances of Stone Deaf that haven't disintegrated into a nasty war:
"Stone Deaf is one of the few truly invincible Warriors because nothing can shatter his impenetrable armor of non recognition. His primitive battle strategy is maddening effective; he simply refuses to acknowledge any arguments he doesn't like. Kung-Fu Master can hammer away with devastating blows, Cyber Sisters can screech in full throat and Profundus Maximus can expound until he drops, but Stone Deaf remains utterly oblivious as he advances his dogged and often repetitious attacks. In the early stages of battle a wide array of Warriors will fling themselves at Stone Deaf, but inevitably they fall back exahusted or lose interest when they see that their best weapons have no effect. His only real enemy is Administrator, who has the power to eject him from the discussion forum."
I used to wear glasses/contact too. I don't remember when I started. But I got tired of being shortsighted. So I corrected my eyesight couple of years ago. Laser surgery, is definitely one of the greatest invention in this era. I used to envy ppl with 20/20 vision and now I have that too. :)
Good then. I stopped complaining about him now. Someone started a thread in GM to ask why ppl hate Andy, I wrote a whole page. Then I deleted it bcos I think that person is going to get very offended and she will probably yell back at me and I'll get all upset and...that is how the whole vicious cycle starts, and I hate confrontation:)
Hehehe, I actually felt bad for them sometimes, to like someone who everyone hates:D
Hey, I didn't know Jimbo wrote a poem about Andy.:rolleyes: what was he thinking?:D I'm really curious to know what he wrote.
Okay, I'll try my poetry writing skill, see if I can think of sth...
Hi Vera, I hate confrontation too. I have another post on Henman and hope you will not be offended. I guess I want to explain why I feel that way.
Different experiences in life make ppl react differently. A good example is how Greg react after his lost to Sampras in USO and Guga's reaction after his lost in TM Paris double finals. I hope this also explains why fans react differently to posts about their fav.
I enjoy reading those poems too and I congrat myself of being smart enough to not wander into the territory of even trying to write a poem.
There was a poster called Vera
Didnt like a certain guy
Even from her point of view
I just cant work out why
His name is Andy Roddick
And he's meant to be a star
He's not going to the Masters Cup
But the top 8 players are :D
Which means he isnt good enough
to win it in Shanghai
All Ive have to say then is
goodbye Andy Goodbye :wavey:
hope you liked it ;)
