Justine Henin: Time to celebrate

Soon-to-be-married Justine Henin has a busy November ahead of her, especially if she reaches the latter stages of the Home Depot Championships presented by Porsche.

The 20-year-old will marry fiancé Pierre-Yves Hardenne back home in Belgium just five days after the conclusion of the season-ending tournament, which will make for an interesting week should she reach the final in Los Angeles.

Leo, I'm quite happy that Safin won through to the final, I agree with the people in the live scoring thread, he deserves a shot at the last title of the year (barring the Master's of course). Hey, I thought I could post some pics from yesterday's trip, cause my dad has a digital camera. They don't do justice to the beauty of that lake, but it's quite an interesting phenomeonon. It's a so-called disappearing lake. During dry season, the water disappears into the ground through sinkholes and all that's left are the fields, but after heavy rainfall, the lake fills out and covers quite a large area. So sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not. :p

Sorry, I'm not staying, just want to post a few comments about the matches I watched on TV today. Marat is pretty impressive. Though Moya lost his form from yesterday. They only showed the second part of 2nd set but Marat seems very calm. I like his chance, I hope he wins his first title tomorrow.

Lleyton is not playing as well as he usually is. His game looks a little sloppy. But he won nonetheless, which is good. I want him to get as much point as he could to distant himself from Ahole. Though, since he's playing Marat tomorrow, I won't be cheering for him, but I think they both will bring their A game tomorrow, knowing how good their opponent is.

Slovaks Level Tie Thanks to Hantuchova

Top ten player Daniela Hantuchova of Slovak Republic continued her strong week of play, defeating Spain’s Magui Serna 6-2, 6-1 in the second singles of the 2002 Gran Canaria Fed Cup Finals to level the tie at one all.

The withdrawal of Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario was met with mixed emotions at the Palacio de Congresos de Maspalomas. Sanchez-Vicario, suffering from a muscle strain in her right leg, was unable to play today and missed, at least, this opportunity to make Fed Cup history as one more tie and one more match would make her, without question, the best Fed Cup player of all-time, surpassing Great Britain’s Virginia Wade.

The crowd in Spain has a love affair with the 30-year-old Barcelona native, but here at least in Gran Canaria her substitute, the Las Palmas native Serna, is equally adored. For the No. 51 ranked Serna, this would be a chance to play before her home crowd and perhaps give Spain the second point of the tie, following Conchita Martinez’s straight set victory over Slovak Janette Husarova in the opening singles.

“I knew in the morning after practice that I was going to play,” said Serna. “The crowd was behind me but I was born here so I expected that. It’s been eight years since I played here so I was excited to play and I’m sorry I didn’t play my best today.”

Serna’s opponent, world No. 8 Daniela Hantuchova has had a dream year, winning her first singles title by defeating Martina Hingis at Indian Wells, breaking into the top ten, qualifying for the WTA Tour Championships, and reaching the Fed Cup Final for her country. If she was surprised to be playing Serna instead of Sanchez-Vicario, she didn’t show it. “I didn’t care who I was playing,” said Hantuchova. “I had to do my best, play my game. I did have to change tactics as Magui has that leftie serve. I didn’t practice for it because I expected to play Arantxa.”

The Slovak No. 1 had another advantage as she had defeated Serna earlier this year 7-6(5), 6-3 in the second round at Hamburg in their only previous meeting. Serna’s year had been less successful, with a drop in the rankings from her 2001 season ending No. 26, although she too won a title at Estoril. Her recent form has not been good, losing six of her last eight matches, but a win today would have helped to end her season on a high note.

The atmosphere in the stadium was the best of the week. Although not as great in numbers as the Spanish, the Slovak supporters were not short on volume or enthusiasm, and were inspired from the start by an in-form Hantuchova who won her first service without the loss of a point.

“Our supporters are great,” said the Slovak No. 1. “They always support us well everywhere we play. That’s what it’s all about.”

The match went with serve until Hantuchova broke Serna for 4-2. She was pressed on her next service game, down 15-40, saving the first with a two-handed backhand volley at the net and the second with a forehand passing shot. Back at deuce, she played two solid points to take the lead 5-2.

“I had two break points in the first set,” said Serna. “But, after that I didn’t even have once chance. Daniela played very well.”

Serving to stay in the set, Serna got behind from the start. Down 15-40, Serna was broken when Hantuchova passed her down the line to take the first set 6-2 in 29 minutes.

Hantuchova held serve in the first game of the second set then broke Serna to take a 2-0 lead. With the momentum on her side, the Slovak made few mistakes holding serve for 3-0. The frail looking Hantuchova was sharply contrasted not just in looks with the shorter, sturdier Serna, but also in style. Hantuchova’s game is fluid and seemingly effortless while Serna’s is quirkier and more workmanlike.

Both players held serve for 4-1. In real trouble now, Serna got behind on her next service. But, two break points down, she suddenly raised her level, saving the first with a forehand volley winner and the second with a strong serve to level the score at deuce. But Serna couldn’t close it out. On the fifth break point of the game, Hantuchova finally converted when a Serna return hit the net and she served for the match at 5-1.

With two strong serves, the Slovak reached 30-0 then Serna won the next two points for 30-30. Another big serve got Hantuchova to match point and, on the next point, Serna put a return wide, handing Hantuchova the win 6-,2 6-1 in 59 minutes and levelling the tie at one match all.

I definitly don't see my fave (Conchi) beating this girl :o

I don't know, Nacho, Conchita has been playing some awesome matches in Fed Cup. She took out Janette Husarova (hero of the semfinal tie) in straight sets.

I think it might come down to the doubles. Of course I want Slovakia to win :) but I think Conchita vs Daniela is going to be a tough one to call.

I'm back, well for 15 mins. Stupid me, for forgetting to charge my cell phone so I have to come back home to get a 15 min quick recharge. While waiting, I thought to give any thought for the match today.

Actually, Lleyton is not as consistent as his usual self. The serve is not that good and he made a lot of errors (in his standard). You know, he once seems invincible in the middle of the year. But being Lleyton, he did do good enough to make the big point and win the match. Paradorn has some impressive winners, but not good enough today. I think Lleyton need to do a lot better tomorrow to beat Marat, unless Marat beat himself first. :p

I also hope that someone other than Lleyton or Gagassi take the # one, but it's not possible this year. Even if Marat wins Paris and get all the points in Shanghai, he still need help from Andre (to not winning matches) to take over the #2. But a good year end performance for Marat will be encouraging. Then, maybe Marat will start believing in himself again and take charge next year. But my wish is of course that JC will be the man in Shanghai. If Hongkong is any indication, then he is really popular in China. I hope the fans will give him a lot of boost to beat everyone in Shanghai. It will be great if him and Rogi plays in the Final in TMC:angel:

In the third round of the BNP Paribas Masters, Moya got his own back ¡V saving six match points in Grosjean¡¦s back-yard, before winning.

In 1999, Andre Agassi ruined Moya¡¦s hopes of defending his French Open crown at Roland Garros. Yesterday, Moya responded by denting Agassi¡¦s chances of finishing the year as the World Number One player.

The other players who have qualified for the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai should perhaps start worrying now. I love John Corbett ever since I watched Northern Exposure religiously. :o I saw the entire show at least 3 times, because our tv stations show reruns of it periodically (at least sometimes they do something right ;) ). Anyone else used to watch that show? To me, it was one of the warmest and funniest shows ever made.

Hantuchova Wins Thriller to Edge Slovaks Ahead 2-1

Daniela Hantuchova has given the Slovak Republic a 2-1 lead in the Fed Cup Final against Spain with a dramatic three-set victory over Conchita Martinez 67(8) 75 64.

In a marathon match lasting three hours 21 minutes, the two number ones battled over every point, neither player prepared to give an inch.

The Slovak Republic is now just one win away from its first ever Fed Cup title, Spain’s Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario – the most successful Fed Cup player in history - having to defeat the Slovak No. 2 Janette Husarova in the second of the reverse singles matches in Maspalomas to keep Spain’s dream of a sixth title alive.

Pumping her fist with every point won during the match, no-one could doubt how much Hantuchova wanted this victory.

Despite the difference in their ranking, Hantuchova the World No 8 and Martinez No. 35, there was little to separate the two on court today. The pair had met just once before today’s match, Martinez using her greater experience on clay to defeat Hantuchova at Roland Garros in 2001. But the 19-year-old Slovak has improved dramatically in the 15 months since that meeting and today’s match was a much tougher proposition for the 30-year-old Spaniard.

In a tight first set lasting almost one and a half hours, both players were constantly put under pressure on serve with six breaks coming in the first eight games.

Hantuchova showed she meant business from the opening game of the match, forcing two break points on her opponents serve before Martinez held on to lead 1-0. Then three more break points in the third game of the set to Hantuchova, and this time the Slovak was able to take her chance, edging ahead 2-1.

A disputed line call on the first point of Hantuchova’s serve sparked the Spanish crowd into action and Martinez forced two break back points, the Fed Cup veteran matching her younger opponent from the baseline to take the break and level the set at 2-2. Four more breaks of serve followed, neither player able to consolidate until Martinez held in the ninth game to lead 5-4. Now the pressure was on Hantuchova, needing to hold serve to stay in the first set.

A backhand into the net by Hantuchova at 30-30 brought up set point for Spain. Hantuchova saved it, but two points later she was back under pressure. Again she raised her game and produced one of only two aces for the match to level at 5-5.

One game later and the Slovak was again serving to stay in the set, was again down set points and again fought back, this time to take the set into a tiebreak. Both players had set points in the tiebreak but it was eventually won by Martinez on her sixth set point, all of them on Hantuchova’s serve.

The Slovak No. 1 held serve easily in the opening game of the second set and immediately broke her opponent to stretch her lead to 2-0. But having battled so hard to take the first set Martinez refused to give in and broke back to level at 2-2.

Unlike the first set, games continued to go with serve until the 12th game of the second set when Hantuchova, having squandered three set points on her opponent’s serve at 5-4, finally broke through to take the set 7-5 and level the match at one set all.

With the match in progress for just over two-and-a-half hours Hantuchova came out to serve in the opening game of the final set, and then raced to a 3-0 lead. Twice during the second set Martinez needed treatment to her back from the team trainer, just as she had done against Husarova yesterday, and with Hantuchova forcing her to stretch for the ball time and time again it became clear that Martinez was starting to feel the strain.

In another hard-fought set, Hantuchova managed to maintain her early break of serve and at 5-3, with a small but very vocal band of Slovak supporters urging her on, came out to serve for the match. But just as neither player had given an inch all the way through this match, Martinez refused to make it easy for Hantuchova, breaking the Slovak to keep Spanish hopes of a victory alive.

Hantuchova’s next chance came in the very next game, and this time the young Slovak champion was not going to let it slip, throwing her arms into the air with delight as she clinched the match 6-4 in the third.



Slovak Republic Wins Fed Cup

The Slovak Republic has won the Fed Cup 2002, after they took a decisive 3-1 tie lead with Janette Husarova's 60 62 victory over Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.

This is the first Fed Cup Title for the Slovak Republic, which has only been playing as a nation in Fed Cup since 1994. It is also only the ninth nation ever to lift the famous Rose Bowl trophy.

The presentation is now being made on court in Maspalomas.

Earlier Daniela Hantuchova won a marathon match against Conchita Martinez 67(8) 75 64 in 3 hours 21 minutes to put the Slovaks 2-1 up.

Even though I complain about it, I much prefer winter weather myself. I love bundling up and wearing scarves and such :o;)

According to our very own hitman, Safin has found his form from 2000 and played the best hitty's seen him play all year :eek: Maybe Potato was still a little tired from yesterday's match, but it sounds like it was all Safin today, anyway.

It's a very exciting prospect, even though Safin can't really create a stir for #1 at the Cup unless Agassihole falls flat on his face. And I'm also hoping that Safin & Ferrero are in different groups! :eek::eek:

I was pretty confident that he would beat Lleyton, bcos his calmness on Sat's match against Moya, reminded me of how calm he was went he first breakthru in winning TMS Toronto in 2000. I thought when the calmness is back, Marat is in top form and it's very hard to beat. Anyway, it's equally unbelievable that this is his first title in the whole year.

Maybe it's bcos I didn't know who's in the Slovak team. But I've seen Nagyova in Toronto this year. She was injured and involved in that very long match against (Pierce?, can't remember). She was great eventhough she's hurt and limping, and she never quits. I like her.

Spain has won the Cup like 17 times or something, and Slovakia hadn't even made it to the final :) I knew Dani was good, and Janette Husarova was the hero of the semifinal tie. But I thought it would be tougher than it was. Conchita Martinez & Arantxa Sanchex-Vicario play some of their best tennis in Fed Cup, and I honestly thought it'd come down to the doubles match.

Glad I was wrong, and I'm also glad Dani has 4 days to rest and recover. Hope they don't party too hard in Spain tonight! ;)

Emma, long time no see. ;) Don't worry about the funeral. It probably won't be as bad as you imagine. The service itself is the worst but afterwards a huge weight is lifted and people tend to relax. In Slovenia it's customary for family and close friends to go to a lunch, which usually turns out to be quite a merry affair. I have no idea how it works but it does. We all share fond memories of the deceased and laugh and enjoy each other's company. I don't know how it works in England though. I hope you get through it alright. :)

Layla: i picked Safin at first but then changed it to Hewitt b/c i was only 3 points behind slave2safin and knew i could have gotten back to #1 if i got the final right and she didn't. of course she predicted Marat :rolleyes: so i changed mine to Lleyton, even though i origninally thoguht he would lose. just playing a bit too risky, and now i'm 19 points behind. :sad: i've only changed a prediction twice in the entire year, and both times i was screwed. :sad: but i still have been ranked #1 the most in the game, far more than anyone else. :D

Hackie: yeah, i won a few titles a while ago in the GTT. i won 2 in singles (i think) and 3 in doubles with my trusty partner zarcasticric. zric is the manager of the tour now, he does all the ranking and stuff. but since the GTT was started up again in the last month, i haven't won anything. :(
