Hey, Mrs. B! :wavey: It seems we just missed each other :( I'm glad you had fun, and I'm looking forward to your reports!!

Hi! :wavey:

I just want to let you know I'm here and I'll start reading the posts now (might take a while ;) ).

Just when I finished work and started surfing the net, the storm that's been brewing for a while came too close for comfort and I had to switch off the computer. :( I've waited until now (Jarod kept me company :) ). There's still occasional lightning, but I think it's far away. Don't be surprised if I suddenly disappear though. *sigh*

I can't believe Lleyton lost again!   Until now I didn't think he needed much cheering, cause he was winning all the time anyway, but now I'm beginning to change my mind. :( Poor Lleyton, I wonder what's up with him.

It's been a strange day when nothing really went my way (except in tennis, thanks to our very own Juanqui :D ), but now I hope I can enjoy an hour in my favorite forum before I go to bed. :)

Hey, Layla! :wavey:

I have to say, you didn't miss very much, besides me being uproarious about Michel :( I'm still really upset, but we'll not go into that . . . it just kinda ruined my whole day.

So you're finished? Yay! :bounce: And you got to watch Jarod in a thunderstorm :D

Layla

Lol, I'm finished for TODAY. Plenty more left for tomorrow. ;)

I'm really sorry about Michel. I nearly chocked when I saw on Eurosport that Rogi will play Verkerk. And then I heard about the shaking and I was heart-broken. Well, obviously not as much as you, but nevertheless. My heart goes out to him. :(

The good news is that Timmy and Seb won! :D And over on the WTA tour, Kimmy won :bounce: 6-3 6-1 and my girls Katarina Srebotnik and Tina Pisnik both won! :) So all in all, more good than bad.

But above all I'm thrilled that Juanqui won and played such a great match. Thanks for your glowing report Mrs. B! :)

Now I have to create my team. ;)

Btw, I'm glad you enjoyed Toblerone TH! ;)

I don't like this negative statement about next week, either. I'd hope his year would end on a more positive note than a first-round loss at TMS Madrid.

I finished the Tolberone :o:o:o and it lifted my spirits a bit. Of course, everyone else winning today also helped :) Best of luck to Juanqui, James, and Dani tomorrow as well!!

:D Well, that was this afternoon. Now it seems like they're playing blocks of bad 80s music. LOL, I haven't figured out this station at all  But I love all the Queen they play, and of course the big blocks of obscure Beatles songs.

Michel will have a stellar year in 2003, never you fear! :)

Juanqui is playing quite early again tomorrow. :( I hate this, it means his match won't be on Eurosport. I really, really want to see him. Well, maybe in the quarters. ;)

I just sent my team and I noticed that I keep buying the same old players. :o Hmmm. I think you have a real chance of overtaking me this week, TH. I didn't think it through at all and just threw my team together. I hope they all get along. ;)

But seriously, I'm worried about Lleyton. :( And if Agassi overtakes him I will scream until the new year's eve. He better get his act together fast. :(

Haha, I sometimes enjoy the 80s songs, even the ridiculous. They are so much a part of my youth. I was a huge Duran Duran fan in primary school. :o

Have I ever told you that the Pearl Jam concert in Ljubljana in 2000 was THE highlight of that year for me? What does that tell you about my pathetic life lol. :o Eddie speaks my language. Have you seen that beautiful movie called Dead Man Walking? There are two songs in that movie where Eddie sings with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and they are just divine.

LOL, not really. I bought Hewitt this week  and of course Juan Carlos :) It was pretty slim pickings in St. Petersburg, though, so you'll probably stay well ahead of me . . . you saw me banging my head against the wall in the thread, well, that's because of Hewitt.

If the Agassihole (hehe, I like that nickname :D) makes #1 I will seriously be on the warpath. Lleyton & Kimmy need some time apart, so they can get rid of this cold they keep giving each other, and Lleyton needs a good kick in the pants! :fiery: I'll never like him again if he lets A-hole pass him.

LOL! I keep forgetting to tell you that my AT last year is in graduate school and planning to major in Slovenian language and literatures! I was really surprised when I heard that, but I can now fully picture him doing such a thing.

I also like Pearl Jam :) Very dark, ironic lyrics. I've never seen that movie though--how pathetic am I? ;) LOL.

So that's what the banging againt the wall was for. ;)

Your AT? What's that?

Not pathetic at all, but I sincerely recommend it. It's one of the more moving movies. You probably know about it right? It's about a man waiting to be executed and a nun who tries to help him come to terms with his life and death? Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon were brilliant. It's a must see, unless you're pro-death sentence, or maybe especially if you are. ;) But I have a feeling it's a movie that only appeals to "liberals".

AT = Apprentice Teacher. It's a supplement to the design of language teaching at my school.

Yes, I know the basic plot of the movie, but I've never been a huge fan of Sean Penn or Susan Sarandon, so . . . and my particular take on the death penalty isn't very popular, or even very well thought out :o

Speaking of death, did you hear about the hostage situation in Russia? That's some scary shit!

Lol, your teacher is in for some heavy shit. I pity the poor guy. Armed Men Take Moscow Theater Audience Hostage
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 8:34 p.m. ET

MOSCOW (AP) -- About 50 armed Chechen rebels stormed a crowded theater in a daring assault, took hundreds of theatergoers hostage and threatened early Thursday to shoot their captives and blow up the building if Russian security forces attacked.

Police and security forces surrounded the building amid the crackle of sporadic automatic weapons fire and were on high alert throughout the Russian capital after the brazen attack, which Russian military experts was meticulously planned,

Moscow police spokesman Valery Gribakin said about 100 women and children had been let out of the theater, and news reports quoted some of them as saying there were pools of blood in the theater halls. The freed hostages were distraught, sobbing and shaking as they emerged from the building where they had been watching a popular musical show.

"The terrorists are demanding one thing -- the end to the war in Chechnya,'' Gribakin said.

Police towed cars parked near the theater and evacuated patients from a nearby hospital.

Those released did not see any dead bodies, but said the hostage-takers had beaten some in the audience. Two pregnant women were later released.

Inside the theater, frantic hostages used cell phones to call families, television and radio stations. Outside, worried Muscovites waited in the dark and in a freezing rain for news of their relatives.

The dramatic hostage taking was a sharp rebuke for President Vladimir Putin, who consistently claims that Russia has the situation in Chechnya -- a mainly Muslim republic in southern Russia -- under control. Putin canceled a trip to Germany and then Portugal on Thursday, his press spokesman, Alexei Gromov, told Interfax. It was unclear what he planned to do about attending the weekend APEC summit in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where he was to meet with President Bush.

Russian news reports said the rebels offered to release 50 more hostages if Akhmad Kadyrov, the head of Chechnya's Moscow-appointed administration, came to the theater.

News reports said the armed men and women were laying land mines inside the theater and had explosives strapped to their bodies which they threatened to blow up if Russian security forces stormed the building. Gribakin, the police spokesman, said there were about 600 people inside the theater when it was seized. Russian news reports said three Germans and three British citizens were inside.

A woman who made her way out of the theater told a television interviewer the men wore camouflage as they took the stage, fired into the air and said: ``Don't you understand what's going on? We are Chechens.''

News reports said the hostage-takers arrived in jeep-like vehicles just as the second act of the play was about to begin. When police and security forces surrounded the theater, the attackers opened fired and threw a grenade. One of the hostages, a doctor, was treating a hostage-taker who was wounded.

Russia is involved in a bloody war in Chechnya, trying to put down a decade-old separatist insurrection in the oil-rich region. News reports cited a Chechen rebel Web site as saying the group was led by Movsar Barayev, the nephew of warlord Arbi Barayev, who reportedly was killed last year.

The Web site said some of the women hostage takers were widows of Chechen rebels killed in the war with Russia and said the rebels were ``smertniki,'' a Russian word for fighters prepared to die for a cause.

"By the scope it can only be compared to the tragedy in New York. The situation is extreme now,'' liberal Russian lawmaker Boris Nemtsov said in a television interview. "We must start a dialogue.''

Senior Russian officials had no immediate comment on the hostage taking which, in an unprecedented move, was being broadcast live from outside the theater on radio and television.

The news reports said Aslanbek Aslakhanov, a member of the national parliament from Chechnya, was inside the theater and negotiating, as was Ruslan Khasbulatov, the former speaker of the Russian parliament who is an ethnic Chechen. Khasbulatov was a leader of the deadly uprising at the Russian parliament in 1993.

The Chechens are among the fiercest national groups in the country and battled the Czars in the 19th century before being finally defeated and their homeland made part of Russia.

Stalin deported them en masse to Kazakhstan in 1944 for allegedly betraying the Soviet Union and supporting Hitler. They were allowed to return to their homes in 1957. The fierce fighters declared independence from the Soviet Union shortly before it collapsed in 1991, and Russian forces subsequently invaded the region to put down the rebellion.

Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev helped force Russia to the negotiating table by leading a bloody raid on the town of Budyonnovsk in a neighboring Russian region in June 1995. His fighters briefly took more than 1,000 hostages and then escaped back into Chechnya. More than 100 civilians died.

Russian forces left Chechnya in 1996 after the disastrous two-year war but returned in 1999 after rebels raided a neighboring region and Russian authorities blamed insurgents for a series of apartment bombings in Russia that killed more than 300 people.

In a January 1996 raid on the southern Russian town of Kizlyar, rebels took hundreds of hostages at a local hospital. Some 78 people were killed.

The theater, a former Soviet-era House of Culture that belonged to a ball-bearing factory, was staging a performance of the musical "Nord-Ost'' (North-East in German), one of Moscow's most popular productions.

Police units and an Alpha special forces unit went to the theater and sealed the area in the freezing, wet weather. The Federal Security Service, the successor to the Soviet KGB, and the Interior Ministry put plan "Thunderstorm'' into effect, which required all officers to report to their units.

Putin was immediately told of the hostage taking, Interfax reported. Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov went to the theater.

The theater is in southeastern Moscow in a working class neighborhood. The musical is based on Veniamin Kaverin's novel "Two Captains.'' The romantic novel recounts the story of two students and their different destinies during the Soviet times. The theater's producer, Alexander Tsekalo, said on Russian television that the theater could hold 1,163 people.

According to the theater's Web site, more than 350,000 people have seen the production since it opened.

I think he'll be just fine. He's a bit eccentric like that. I'm just not sure what he's going to do with it, LOL!!

He's a natural for languages, though. He majored in Russian and French and turned down a teaching fellowship in France to do this! He also used to translate all of our Russian poems and whatnot. I get the feeling that he was a special seed that makes my professor very proud :)

It strikes close to home for me because attacking people in the theatre or cinema is almost like sacrilige to me. The cinema is my safehouse, I go there to escape the horrors of life (well not always but often enough). I can't imagine being there and enjoying the production when suddenly life came crashing in with full force. My heart goes out to those people. Enough of terrorism!!! :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

Goodnight, Layla! :wavey:

Yeah, it is like a bad dream!! There were other stories of actors and audience members escaping through the windows, and the terrorists say they will kill 10 hostages for every 1 terrorist that's wounded or killed.

The Chechan War is crap, but I never, ever thought it'd come to this  I'm sure we're going to have a discussion about it tomorrow in history.

It also strikes me as eeriely similiar to the sniper shootings here in the States. I mean, what's so fucking scary about it all is that no one knows when the next strike will happen--and it's been out in the open. People are afraid to take their kids to school, to do something as simple and necessary as buy groceries or pump gas.

It all just really sucks.:mad::fiery:

The most twisted part of it all, I think, is just how much this individual is using the media for his own gain. Like that kid who was shot coming from school--that happened the day after the media announced that children were not being targeted.

I read a great article in last week's US News & World Report, but it's not available online :( It really is a very interesting case from the psychological point of view. Nothing like this has ever been attempted, successfully no less.

Here's (http://www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/021028/usnews/28sniper.htm)a follow up article, though. Also good.

Leo7
10-24-2002, 02:09 AM
"A nobody? Some cops scoff at psychological conjecturing, but profilers say a composite sketch of the sniper's mind might help some people identify a killer in their midst. The bottom line: Look for an angry nobody. "They are grievance collectors," says San Francisco State University criminologist Mike Rustigan. He might have been rejected by the police or the military. "The message he is sending is, 'I'm the best sniper there ever was, and you misjudged me,' " says DeLong. Attention has also focused on America's sniper subculture. "There are a bunch of places that train civilians," says Dan Erber, a former police sniper who now trains police and military. Recreational snipers say the scrutiny is unfair."

interesting theories from the article. could be correct.

i was just watching the news now and they say they have suspects and they believe the shooter used to work for the military and had been trained as a sniper. i hope this is a step in the right direction.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Sluiter: "I started off really well. I knew I had to go for my shots and take plenty of risks. I did not want to get stuck in any long rallies because of his super groundstrokes. It was to my advantage that Lleyton hadn't played a singles match yet on the surface. Nice to win against the No.1 player in the world. Let's see if I can repeat my performance in the next match."

Hewitt: "Hats off to Raemon who played a great match. He jumped on my serves and played very aggressively often getting the first big hit in the rallies. The conditions with the heavy balls and slow court did not favor my game especially since my serve wasn't on today."

Dent: "Sjeng is a great player and I had to work very hard to make it to the tibreaker in the first set. Once in the 'breaker I started to play very well and not rush my shots. I broke him in the first game of the second set and that was the most important game of the match."

Srichaphan:"This surface really suits my game since the bounce is slow and high. I feel very confident in my game at the moment. My dad films my matches and then we sit together to see what I do right and wrong. It's been a super year for me and I did not expect to finish in the top 30 when the season started in January. Tonight I will have dinner with the Thai ambassador. It's been sort of a tradition at the international events to have dinner with the Thai ambassadors in the countries that I am playing."

Arazi: "I am very happy to win my first match since the US Open. Today I played a solid match and everything finally came together. Magnus looked a bit sluggish out there but I will take every win I can get."

Joachim Johansson: "For some reason I wasn't at all nervous coming into the match. Once we started I felt like I would get some break opportunities in his service game. My serve worked very well today and it helped a lot to have gone through three rounds of qualification."

Tons of versions of "Alive"? Interesting . . . also very ironic. One of my friends was in a car accident, and that song was playing when it happened. He really was lucky to be alive . . .

I only have two of their albums, and if I hadn't discovered Radio Free Russia :D they would still be in heavy rotation in my collection.

I always thought Lleyton is a good sports, just a little very intense. So this proves he's gracious even when he lost. Well, he often played badly after those sickness, so I hope he'll rebound high next week in Paris. The important thing is, he must stop the craziness of allowing Baldy to get AHEAD! Only he can do it...

LOL and Leo & ILR. You two are so cute ;)

Just finished reading Mrs. B's reports here and in Rogi's forum and her day sounded like a dream!! :sigh: The only way it could have gotten better would have been if Michel had been well enough to play . . . oh, well. Positive things, today, TH, positive things. :)

Best of luck to James & Juan Carlos & Rogi in Basel!! Another action filled day that will hopefully turn out our way again!!

Hope everyone has a good day!

Inside, Fearful Children; Outside, Frantic Relatives
By SABRINA TAVERNISE

MOSCOW, Thursday, Oct. 24 -- It was an ordinary Wednesday night and Nadezhda Mikhailova had flicked on the evening television news while she made dinner. The news on the evening report seemed incomprehensible. She called a friend to ask if they had seen the same news.

The report was true. The performance of the musical "Nord-Ost," or North-East, that her two granddaughters, Ksyusha and Nastya, and her daughter Anna, were attending, was seized by guerrillas. It was a school outing for the girls, who were there with some of their classmates.

"They had been waiting for a month to see it, and look what happened," she said, standing in front of a column of special forces police, dressed in a flannel hat and a winter jacket holding photographs of her three loved ones. "I am so afraid."

The children, ages 11 and 8, and their mother, 30, a teacher, had been waiting in fear since just after 9 p.m. when a group of between 40 and 50 Chechen terrorists, including women, stormed the theater and fired shots into the air inside.

The police here on Wenesday night said at least nine children had been released, though Ms. Mikhailova had not been able to confirm that her grandchildren were among them.

The audience, in shock, realized it was for real when, as one witness said, "we saw bullet tracers on the wall," of the darkened theater.

An actor, who had escaped through an open third-floor window by tying costumes together to make a rope, described a scene of confusion and terror, with actors fleeing the stage and gunmen firing shots into the air and warning everyone that it was not a joke.

Witnesses described Chechen women with explosives tied to their bodies. One child actor said there were several school groups in the audience. Aleksei Ivashenko, an author of the musical, described how he and four others escaped.

"We were locked in the costume room and they wore masks," he said. "We got out through the windows."

Outside, a cold rain fell until the early hours of the morning, when a heavy mist hung under the street lights. Relatives with drawn faces mixed with lines of special forces troops in uniform and crews of journalists. All were craving new details. Few came.

Some here on Wednesday night recalled the bloody 1995 attack at Budyonnovsk, when the Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev took 1,200 hostages in a hospital in southern Russia.

In that siege, and the fouled release operation that followed, more than 100 people died.

"Now we'll see if anything has changed since then," said Sergei Parkhomenko, editor of Zhurnal, a weekly magazine, who was reporting on the scene. "This will show us."

One mother, Irina Gozheva, waiting anxiously outside in a muddy playground close to the theater, was not hopeful.

"Nothing is any different," said Ms. Gozheva, whose daughter, Yuliya, 25, was inside. "You think that our authorities are more capable now than they were then?"

As the siege wore on, fear and frustration grew among some relatives. One man, who said his son was inside the building, shouted, "How would you feel if your son was inside?"

He expressed frustration with the rescue effort, which had brought few results by the early hours of the morning.

"These men," he continued, gesturing at the police, "are only good at giving interviews."

The biggest worry, said Ms. Mikhailova, is that the Russian forces will not be able to agree on anything with the gunmen inside.

The gunmen have voiced demands through escaped hostages that Russia withdraw its troops from the Republic of Chechnya.

"The demands simply aren't fulfillable right away," Ms. Mikhailova said. "Will they all stay inside until the demands have been met? That could take months."

That article was from the New York Times, by the way . . .

 That sounds so horrible!! I can't believe the rebels would hold children, school groups!, hostage and bargain with their lives!! This is why the Chechan rebels get very little sympathy in the West (besides the fact that the Russian missions are not reported very much).

I hope they come to their senses and at least release the children, if not everyone!!

In that match, Karol couldn't keep his toss straight. One time he serves, he tossed and catched his ball about 5-7 times before he finally serve that. That gets on Andre's nerve. And him being such a poor sports, Andre mocked Karol in his own serve game, pretending he couldn't toss the ball right and kept catching the ball. Karol was pretty cool and calm, ignore Andre and moved on with the game. Karol lost the match. Baldy is such an idiot!

Ferrero Boosts Masters Credentials
Thu Oct 24,11:26 AM ET
By Timothy Collings

BASEL, Switzerland (Reuters) - Second seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero on Thursday consolidated his claims for an automatic qualifying place for the end-of-season Masters Cup when he brushed aside the challenge of Nicolas Thomann 6-4, 6-2 at the Swiss Indoors tournament.

Ferrero, who beat Swiss wild card Marc Rosset in two tight sets in the first round on Wednesday, had little difficulty in disposing of the Frenchman and claiming a quarter-final meeting with fellow-Spaniard Felix Mantilla.

For Ferrero, who is fourth in the ATP Champions Race for seven automatic qualifying places for the Shanghai showpiece, it was a welcome trouble-free passage.

A place in the last eight earns him at least 12 points and $27,000 so it was no surprise that he was relaxed and happy with his performance.

"I think I did well today, I served well and I dealt with his serve too," he said. "It takes the pressure off me. Now I hope to win the quarter-final and that would be another good result for me."

STRONG RECOVERY

Ferrero, 22, has made a strong recovery this year after missing the opening Grand Slam event, the Australian Open (news - web sites), through injury.

"It was tough for me to come back after that because it put me under pressure to collect points in important tournaments like Roland Garros and Monte Carlo," he explained. "But I am pleased to be playing well at the moment and feel good indoors on these courts."

He added: "If I can be in the semi-finals here in Basel I think I will then be very close to Shanghai and that is good. But it is not something I think about on the court. Then I just concentrate on the match." Mantilla, like Frenchman Arnaud Clement, had earlier ended the dreams of an opening round hero in beating Swiss Ivo Heuberger 6-1, 7-6.

Heuberger had beaten eighth seed Alex Corretja (news) of Spain in the opening round, so the result was a small measure of revenge for the Spaniards against the Swiss.

Clement also reached the last eight by ending the hopes of a giant-killer. He beat Romanian Adrian Voinea, who knocked out fourth seed Albert Costa (news) in the opening round, 6-3, 6-4.

_____________

Strong recovery indeed:angel:

:) Vera, you still there? I think Mary Pierce and Robbie Alomar split up. Can't keep up with these liaisons (dangereuses)!

Juanqui's just plowing through, isn't he? I said he was determined after his poor showing in Madrid.

Too bad about Hewitt, Safin, Max, Blake... I really don't want Andy going any further!!!

It is quite amazing that Juanqui has reached #4 after the beginning of this year -- it would be great if he made it to the Masters Cup for the 2nd yr in a row!! Cool! (But I also want Rogi to make it too!!)

Even with Marat crashing out again, how does this affect his ranking and qualification for Shanghai???

Vera
10-24-2002, 07:03 PM
Hi RF. :wavey:

I'm shocked about Mary and Robbie's split. Mary used to talk very lovely about how Robbie has helped her in her career... Well, that's sad, they were a lovely couple.

Ya, I'm really happy too. This year seems like a down year for Juanqui, at the beginning, after last year's great result. But he turned it around, didn't he.:D I think now, this is even a better year for him, because the good results is all around, not only on clay.

Safin should be able to go to Shanghai, even though he might not play well next week. He needs to turn things around. Maybe he should be convinced that he can be helped by a stable coach. I think he just thought the problem's in his head and no one can help him, but it's not true. Anyway, getting to Shanghai shouldn't be a problem for him, but how he does once he gets there, no one knows. Maybe DC will give him a big boost, if Russia can win.

Rogi should be fine too. I'm confident that he will make it to Shanghai. He is in great form now, completely over his slump, which is great to see. I'm hoping a Rogi Juanqui final in Basel. Though, I think if they do meet in finals, Rogi will probably have a upper hand. But that's okay. They both face tough opponents ahead though. Rogi, pls get rid of Roddick. And Gonzo will be a big challenge on JC's path to the final.

Thanks for the article, Vera :) It would be so wonderful to have Juan Carlos at the Cup for the second year in a row. And if he does well this week and next week, he will further his case as an all-court player.

 Gonzo is in his quarter?! :( That sucks. But maybe this is the magic moment to finally defeat the old juniors foe. :D

 Poor James. He has such a better game than Roddick, yet still hasn't managed to defeat him in professional play (I'm sure he kicks Roddick's ass in practice, LMAO!!). Still, so wonderful he's having good results on all surfaces :)

And RF, what do you mean, does Juan Carlos have a girlfriend?! He's got a wife and a girlfriend :D;) Seriously, though, I don't know for sure, but I think he and Esther have parted ways.

Hehehe, they will get thru, I hope:) Man, that Waske is giving Rogi a hard time, eh? Waske beat Moya in Tokyo, he's a tough cookie. But no worries, Rogi knows better, he won't disappoint a home crowd.

I don't think Juanqui broke up with Esther at all. It has been a rumour that they broke up, but never confirmed. But in a very recent interview, he was asked about his priority, he mentioned that tennis, family and his fiancee...so I think he is still good with Esther. Hopefully, they are still together. I like Esther, she looks sweet and they make a really good looking couple.

Damn that Roddick. And really, James has to figure out a way to beat Roddick, 0-6, that's too much. C'mon James.

I don't know when they got engaged. But JC is listed as single (with a fiancee) in his official website.

Here's the interview, with the translation service:

' ' MY ILLUSION IS TO GAIN ROLAND GARROS ''
Twice semifinal and this year finalist of Roland Garros they are results that show openly that Juan Carlos Ferrero is a deluded player to gain the Parisian match. During the next months its participation in the Masters Cup de Shangai gambles, where the eight best ones of the world will face. Ferrero is more than prepared to give a joy us before the season finishes.

How you arrive at the match Tennis Masters Madrid?
Ferrero: Before arriving at Madrid I must participate in three matches and we are going to see how I arrive from form at the match of Madrid. Right now I am playing very or and I hope that the three matches that I have left come to me or to arrive in very good form to Madrid.

- What delays of the Tennis Masters Madrid with the participation of the 37 better tennis players of the world?
Ferrero: I hope that it is a very important match for the Spaniards. We have very good views facing Shangai and a good result in Madrid would be wonderful for us. We played with very many motivation because we played for the second time in house. Before we had Count de Godó and now the one of Madrid, that is going to us to come very well because we played in fast track. It is going to us to come to play very well in different tracks.

- the match Tennis Masters Madrid gambles in fast track, covered... It can be a disadvantage for the Spaniards?
Ferrero: I do not create. We are customary to play in tracks ' in door' what happens is that the results are not too good. We never emphasized to gain matches ' in door'. It is not easy, it is necessary to be very specialistic and before in Spain there were no closed tracks where to train. I, now, have a track closed in my academy and then I can better be trained and adaptarte to the track ' in door' that is quite different from the normal ones.

- To the Tennis Masters Madrid the best ones come. Who imposes more respect to you? Who you think that it can win?
Ferrero: The Spaniards, when playing in house, we left like favorites, we can play here or although it is clear that Sampras, Hewitt, Safin or Agassi are in very good form and are very dangerous. We are going to have well-taken care of with them.

- With respect to your participation in the Masters Cup in Shangai, now you are quarter, but with many tennis players behind you you play it in Madrid?
Ferrero: You always have a little pressure knowing that if you do not play well it is very probable that you do not enter the Match of Shangai. When you do not have the pressure, you concentrate yourself very many and you are in which you must be and when one is so pending has very not very often leave the things bad. All those that there ' we are hung of spun to enter Shangai we are not going to enter but all we have possibilities and the one that better it plays, is going to enter.

- Where you are going to play until Masters Cup in Shangai arrives?
Ferrero: Game in Tokyo, Lyon, Basel, Madrid, Paris Bercy and if I arrive at the Masters Cup de Shangai.
- How you see the future of Spanish tennis?
Ferrero: There is very good future. They come chavales like Nadal, that is ' pegandó hard behind. We are reinforced by those chavales and, now, we like Tomy or I who we are younger than, for example, Corretja or Moyá have long time to be there above. The future he is enough insured.

- You won in Montecar it, you arrived at the end of Roland Garros, now victory in Hong Kong... You do a balance of which you take of season.
Ferrero: The season principle was not nothing good because I had an important injury in my knee that forced to me to be a stopped month. Soon I had more injuries and nothing went to me or until Car Mount arrived it where it I could do or. Soon Roland Garros arrived where I had the injury of the ankle where I could be remade, also I made the end of Kitzbuhel. There have been some matches that I have played well and the important thing is that I have played less matches than the others but with those less matches have been most important and I have made the good results there. I am above with few played matches and possibilities of playing the Masters.

- What you remember of the lost end of Roland Garros?
Ferrero: That defeat is digested. Memory is past already certain time although still often that could have won. That day was called on to Coast to win. I have made two semifinals and one end and think that someday I can win.

- About what match you dream in gaining all the nights when you lie down?
Ferrero: The match that I more want to win is Roland Garros. I hope that in just a short time the last door is opened to me that has been closed to me and can happen.

- Which are the priorities in your life?
Ferrero: My priorities in the life are tennis, my family, my fiancče and everything what it surrounds to me in the academy.

Yeah, pretty recent. It probably does mean he has a girlfriend sure, unless he's pretending to have one, which wouldn't really be that surprising. Either way, it's not really important. He seems to be happy now and he's playing full of confidence. That's all that matters to me. ;)

Barbara has always had difficulty closing out big matches. i guess it didn't help her confidence when trying to close out the set that she had just lost to Dani 2 times in the past 2 months. lol. great comeback, Dani. ;)

Ferrero Rewarded for Toil as Costa Woes Continue
Wed Oct 23,12:22 PM ET
By Timothy Collings

BASEL, Switzerland (Reuters) - French Open (news - web sites) champion Albert Costa (news) suffered another blow to his hopes of qualifying for the season-ending Masters Cup as he crashed out of the Swiss Indoors in the first round Wednesday.

But fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, the second seed and the man beaten by Costa at Roland Garros in June, survived a stern test of his resolve to reach the second round with a 7-6, 7-6 win over Switzerland's Marc Rosset.

Costa, 11th in the world rankings and ninth in the ATP Champions race, was beaten, 6-3, 6-3, by unseeded Romanian Adrian Voinea and is now struggling to claim one of the seven automatic qualifying spots for the season-ending showpiece event in Shanghai.

However, he could still land the eighth and final berth -- reserved for the highest-placed grand slam champion who finishes between eighth and 20th in the Champions Race.

Ferrero, fourth in both the world rankings and the Champions Race, failed to break Rosset's serve but won both tiebreaks 13-11 and 7-4 respectively to beat the wild card entrant.

Voinea now meets the unseeded Arnaud Clement of France in the second round while Ferrero, who is seeded to meet defending champion and top seed Tim Henman (news) of Britain in Sunday's final, faces another unseeded Frenchman, Nicolas Thomann.

Henman was scheduled to make his tournament debut against French qualifier Cedric Pioline later Wednesday.

Ferrero, 22, had to draw on all his determination against the big-serving Rosset to reach the last 16.

"He is very difficult to play against on the hard indoor courts," said Ferrero.

FERRERO MOTIVATION

"I could not break his serve because he does not give the same chances away that he might do on clay. I had to take my chances in the tiebreaks."

Ferrero added: "When he served me an ace at 214 kph, I just knew it was too fast for me. I just said 'that's it'.

"He was really motivated today, but I am too because I want to make sure I go to Shanghai. I was in the Masters Cup last year and reached the semi-finals. I have more experience now so I can do better."

Ferrero's mood was in contrast to that of Costa, who was beaten comprehensively in just 72 minutes.

In eight tournaments since his Grand Slam win in Paris, he has reached only one final -- at Amersfoort in the Netherlands in July -- and one quarter-final.

In the rest, he has gone out in the opening or second round, a run of results that has left him despairing at his own form.

"I feel so very bad now," he told Reuters. "I am not playing very well at the moment. I know that. But I intend to keep fighting.

"I don't care about the Masters Cup. It is an illusion for me, still, but I plan to go to Paris and to try and play well there and then we shall see."

Voinea, 28, winner of only one title in his career compared to Costa's 12, is 70th in the ATP's entry system points rankings.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I know not many of you like Costa. But I can't help but feel sorry for him. It does seem though he's the one going to Shanghai instead of Johansson (unless Thomas gets out of his own slump and win Paris). So I hope Costa will put himself together to put up a good show in Shanghai (as compare to another no-show).

not sure if someone already answered this question but Andre and Karol had a confrontation at a USO match a few years back. Karol was struggling with his ball toss during the match (it was at night and very dark) and continued to catch the ball. it took him so long to finally serve, and Andre was getting pissed. he had no patience at all! Agassi acted like a supreme jackass and started mocking Karol by doing the same thing on his serve with the ball toss, except on purpose. i don't remember who actually won the match. if i was Karol, i wouldn't have been so mad at Andre!:fiery:

Indeed, but he specifically mentions "girlfriend", so it would be strange to me if he said something about a girlfriend and didn't have one. Of course, if he just lied, I'd understand that, too, but he never struck me as the type of person who'd lie to keep the mystery going.

I feel sorry for him, but I can't say I didn't expect it. He didn't win brownie points with me cause of my jealous rage over the RG final, but everyone knows the man is useless on any surface other than clay! That's why I don't like the fact that he's going to the Masters Cup instead of Tommy Jo. I'm also upset that Thomas is injured :( and is looking sketchy for his defense of title next year.

It's been a weird few days for me, so don't mind my bitching and moaning

Thanks, Leo, for the explanation of the US Open match. Agassihole won that, but it sounds like Karol got his revenge tenfold :D

Good morning everyone! :wavey:

Mrs. B, I'm sorry to hear you had a migraine. My mom and my aunt have them regularly and they're the worst. :( I hope you're feeling better now. :) *hugs*

I'm excited about today's matches, though I'm pretty disappointed that Juanqui's match won't be on Eurosport. :( And today they will show one match from Stockholm as well and it's the first one. As far as I'm concerned, for Srichaphan vs. Sluiter they needn't have bothered. Well, that sounds too ungrateful, but just to think that the match afterwards, which they won't show (switching over to women) will be the ONLY match I'm interested in in Stockholm, Robredo vs. Santoro, makes me sad.

But I will get to see Henman and Clement, so I can't be too grumpy. :D

Anyway, let's proceed with cheering as I won't be around later.

VAMOS JUANQUI!!!

Hehe, I like your taste in music. :) How come you don't have No Code? I love that album and I read somewhere that they consider it their favorite album (don't take my word for it, I could be wrong, but I read a lot of interviews about a year ago).

Oh Alive. I can never get enough of that song. It meant so much to me at one point in my life, but I guess a lot of people say that. It's true, it touches people in a way few other songs do.

No, I haven't heard the new single. They have a new single out? Wow. Can't wait to hear it. I haven't been listening to music much lately, I had to concentrate on my translations. I often listen to music while I work, but sometimes I just can't concentrate.

Are you familiar with Temple of the Dog? Hunger is another one of my all time favorite songs. The first time I heard it on MTV (they still had Headbanger's Ball in those days :) ) it blew me away. Or maybe it's just the fact that I'm in love with Chris Cornell. :hearts: When I bought his solo album, I couldn't stop listening to it. :o

Feeling much better today but i have to avoid the cold or else it's gonna come back again. I could have taken those special tabs yesterday but i didn't want to overdo it because they're quite strong so i'll wait if i get another attack today, which i hope not. Well, it's an excuse to stay at home and watch matches on tv. And the other good news is i've finally figured out how to tape on my VCR. About time, huh? I mean only if i do it manually, but i still have to figure the other stuffs, I'm sooo clueless when it comes to things like this. But i can cook, and i can play tennis...;)

At least they'll show Rogi's match on Swiss tv. Hope he kicks Roddick's ass.

And GOOD LUCK to Juanqui today!!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Mrs. B, I'm glad you're feeling better :) And, as always, that you have an excuse to stay home and watch tennis. Sometimes the best way to tape IS manually, so you can cut out the commercials (but if you said Rogi was in the commercials, well, I could see why you wouldn't wait to cut them out ;)).

LOL at Agassihole! And I find it HILARIOUS that Karol was the one to hand him the loss! :D You GO, Karol :D:D:D

Yeah, it's not really Eurosports fault that the tournament organizers have put Juanqui on first AGAIN. The coverage doesn't start until 16:45 because they're showing women in Linz. I echo your words re: AA and Kucera!! I distinctly remember that match and what an A-hole AA was -- they should have fined him but do they ever??? Rarely! Did you know he has been kicked out of tournaments before -- for what, you ask? For being AA. Enough said...

Let's get on with the matches at hand!

Where's Juanqui? I'm surprised they don't show his match -- s/be a good one betw. 2 Spaniards??!!

He should have no problemas getting through at all.

No, of course not. I'm just a bit (a lot :o ) lazy today, but that just means I'll have to work late at night again. :( I have aerobics class as well, so I really should kick myself in the ass and get to work. I just couldn't concentrate while I had no idea what was going on in Juanqui's match. ;)

I'll have to go to my auntie's to work with during the weekend.

Are you enjoying your holidays? :)

Can someone tell me about Dani's match? She twisted her ankle?! Thank goodness she won, though.

BASEL, Switzerland (Reuters) - Second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero survived a torrid test on Friday as he beat unseeded fellow Spaniard Felix Mantilla 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 in a dramatic quarter-final at the Swiss Indoors tournament.

Mantilla, eliminated after a series of close, controversial calls on the fast St Jakobshalle carpet court, marked the end of the contest by throwing a towel at the umpire's chair.

Luckily for the quick-tempered Catalan the towel wrapped itself around the arm of the high seat without striking American umpire Steve Ullrich.

It was not immediately clear if Ullrich would treat the incident as a serious breach of behavior.

Ferrero, fourth in both Champions Race and the rankings, will meet seventh seed Fernando Gonzalez or unseeded Frenchman Arnaud Clement in the last four.

The towel-throwing incident reflected Mantilla's frustrations as the Spaniards struggled to seize the initiative.

Mantilla, 54th in the Champions Race and 59th in the world rankings, was already out of the running for an automatic qualifying place for the end-of-season showpiece Masters Cup in Shanghai but was clearly intent on denting the hopes of his 22-year-old opponent.

If Ferroro, meanwhile, hopes to build up momentum for Shanghai, he will need to show more control as he struggled to produce his most aggressive tennis against an opponent he had beaten in all five previous meetings.

He found it difficult to dominate with his serve and struggled in all areas as Mantilla fought tigerishly.

In the end, though, Mantilla became increasingly frustrated as several close calls went against him.

The decisive moment came when Ferrero moved to the net during a typical closely-fought rally on the first match point at 6-5 and angled a volley that seemed to edge into the tramlines. Mantilla believed it was out, but as both players stood to listen for a call, none came.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mantilla's always a tough opponent for Juanqui, they met 5 times and all went 3 sets, 3 of the victory were decided on the 3rd set TB. Good thing that Juanqui always came out the winner.

Seems though he didn't play as well as he did in his last 2 matches, hope he pick it up from here. Gonzo is gonna be really tough, he needs all he has to beat Gonzo to avenge for his past losts.

Vamos Juanqui. You can do it. :bounce:

Ferrero Closes In on Safin, Shanghai
Spaniard's win puts him on verge of No. 3 spot in Champions Race, Masters Cup berth.

Second-seeded Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero started slowly in his quarterfinal matchup against countryman Felix Mantilla in Basel on Friday, but rebounded to capture a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) win that brings him within two points of Marat Safin for the No. 3 position in the ATP Champions Race and within two wins of securing a spot at the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai.

Safin's early-round loss this week in St. Petersburg prevented him from adding to his current Champions Race points total of 469, while Ferrero's win puts him at 467.

Ferrero's next opponent will be hard-hitting Chilean Fernando Gonzalez, the No. 7 seed, who also had a tough battle on Friday. Gonzalez downed French shotmaker Arnaud Clement, 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-5, to move into his first career indoor semifinal.

If Ferrero defeats Gonzalez and moves into the Basel final, he will pick up enough points to pass Safin for No. 3 in the Champions Race. If the 22-year-old Spaniard wins his third title of 2002 (TMS Monte Carlo, Hong Kong) on Sunday, he will clinch a berth in next month's Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai.

I'm watching Henman's match and I'm on the edge of my seat. Timmy won the first set, but Nalbandian is causing him no end of trouble in the second. I hope he pulls through in 2 sets, otherwise it will be tough for him to win the match.

I want Carlos to beat Seb -- he already went to Sydney last yr and had a great DC win over my beloved Aussies -- the Frenchies have had their day... I want Russia to win the DC but doesn't look likely what w Marat and Yevy in a slump.

Alexandra -- what a flake she is! [sorry if I offended anyone but she truly is!]:p

Well, I'm just being pessimistic. Seb is a good indoor player, I think he has a better chance indoor than Carlos. Seb has no chance to go to Shanghai even if he wins Paris. But he's ranking will dive if he loses in the 3rd. In fact, Seb might be facing Paulo Mathieu in his first match, it's no easy match either. But you're right, Carlos going to Shanghai is probably more important than Seb defending his title. I like them both...

And ya, for the first time ever, I'm cheering for JMG. Oh, that gives me a shiver.

Max plays David Nalbandian (who just dispatched of Henman) in the first round.

James plays Gonzo :(

Both Jarkko & Michel drew qualifiers, and then Jarkko could see Hewitt again (!!) and Micha would see Tommy Haas.

And Guga and Tim could play yet ANOTHER early round match! 2nd, and only if Guga gets past his opening round qualifier.

What a shitty draw :(

Layla

FUCK! :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

I just wasted almost 3 hours of work just to see Tim lose so terribly. And now I hear about the fucked up draw in Paris. I'm so mad at the world right now, I'm seeing red. There's nothing worse in tennis than seeing someone you detest defeat someone you adore.

Juanqui needs to get his revenge tomorrow. If he loses to him again I'm gonna need a therapist. And if he doesn't make it to Shanghai I will bang my head against the wall so long I will forget what tennis is.

Don't mind me, I'm just terribly ANGRY right now.

Probably Katarina, she's also a terrific doubles player. She likes to play with Bob Bryan. ;) But Maja is on the rise. She's playing better and better and has real potential. :) My favorite is Tina though. Not sure why, she has such a weird game, she slices a lot. I think she should learn to be more aggressive.

She is so tired. I can feel her sadness from her e-mail and I feel really bad now. If I am still in Calgary, I can help her out but there is nothing I can do here other the praying for her family.

So sad to hear that. :( I know you can't be there physically, but you can talk to her through e-mails and give her your support. That also means a lot. I'm sure she appreciates someone to talk to. :) I hope her mother feels better soon.
