Richard lost to Olivier Mutis 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 :( But since he's the second loser in the qualifying round, maybe he will get into the main draw anyway . . . or do the "next in" lists get preference there?

:D :D :D Thanks guys. They will need all the luck they need.

I'm not sure how the LL system works. So best of luck to Richard to get in. like I said, a 32 draws and only 21 main draw players, 4 qualis. If there's 3 WC as usual, there's so quite a lot of spots left.

lindsay is a choker. once again 2 points away from a title (like in LA and Moscow) but she couldn't finish it off. oh fuck, there goes her last chance to win a 2002 tournament. she's not playing next week, and serena will be playing in the Season-Ending Champs so nobody has a shot of winning there.

Hi Leo! :wavey:

Lindsay may be a choker but she didn't choke this time, at least I don't think so. The match point wasn't on her serve anyway. It was a very tight tie-break. Choking is if you have a real chance and blow it and Lindsay didn't really have one. She played very well under the circumstances but it got harder and harder as the match progressed. I began to realize she wouldn't win this towards the end of the 2nd set. But she fought like a lioness until the very end and saved quite a few match points before going down. Yeah it was heartbreaking that she lost. But her attitude on the court was a lot better than in some of the other tournaments I've seen and she can only be proud of her performances, especially against Juju. That victory was heroic. :)

Layla
10-20-2002, 10:57 PM
lol, looks like I'm becoming a bigger fan than you are Leo. ;) J/k. You're still her number one fan. :) Don't get too down on her, her comeback was so much better than expected. Next year, she'll rise to the top again. :D

Leo7
10-20-2002, 11:15 PM
lol. i'll be okay in a little bit.

the funny thing is that lindsay was never a choker. she never had such problems closing out matches before until this year. at first that made sense b/c she had just come back, was lacking match play, and didn't know how to play the big points. but now there is no excuse. she should be winning these matches. 2 points away in LA (serving for the match), 2 points away in Moscow, and 1 point away in Zurich. :(

Aww, Leo, I hope you feel better :( Just keep thinking about the stuff everyone pounded in my head about Michel. Lindsay has gotten progressively better over the year--how many players are able to come off an injury and advance to three finals in a year?! And next year she'll be a force again. :)

Leo7
10-20-2002, 11:33 PM
well actually she's been in 4 finals this year :)

Layla
10-20-2002, 11:36 PM
You said it TH. :) Maybe the problem with Lindsay is that she didn't want to set her goals too high for her come-back (for all I know that was a smart move, it obviously worked to an extent) and maybe she's too happy to just make it to the final, as if that in itself is an extraordinary achievement (and it is), so she loses the momentum and doesn't take it one step further. At least that's what I gather from her statements. But I can assure you that attitude will change with the new season when she won't be satisfied with just reaching the finals. You'll see. :)

Im back for a while... I have to leave in a few though. I got the great news that I will have to work like double the time I was for the rest of the year.

About my team´s win, it was just fantastic. We played on the road, against a very dangerous team (mind you one of the world champions Kleberson plays there) and got a 3-2 result.
We were leading 1-0 and then they brought it back to 1-1. On half time, the coach made the team come back in an even better spirit and we got another lead 2-1. Two minutes later, though, one of our backs made a gross mistake and had to tackle the offensive player down, and got a red card.
And we had to handle like 40 minutes with 10 players vs 11. We got a counter-attack goal to lead 3-1, but they scored again when the match was almost in its end.
We just hang in there and got the win, and we needed it VERY badly. Now we have the local classic match next saturday, at home. And Ill be at the stadium, for sure :D

Today was our goalkeeper´s (Clemer) birthday, and he was the best player of the match, followed closely by the defender Luis Alberto (picture below), who was a giant on defense and scored two goals in the attack. :D

Well it was very confusing. This is a sequel to Hannibal and Silence of the lambs, only this is what happened before both films if you understand me.Hannibal is a doctor and he has a kind of assisstant.Hannibal tries to kill his assisstant but he escapes and moves out of town with his wife and son.Hannibal is then caught and locked away.

But there is another killer on the loose and Hannibal is his idol. What this killer does is carefully plan who his victims are and he kills the whole family and replaces their eyes with splints of mirror. He is disfigured and doesnt like looking at himself, but by putting glass in victims eyes makes them "reborn"

The police and FBI contact Hannibals old assisstant to help them on the case. When he realises when he is going to kill someone else he sets up a trap telling the press where he is staying, but the killer doesnt fall for it,he ends up killing the journalist.Hannibal is being asked to help out on the case and he gives away his assisstants address to the killer.

During all this, the disfigured killer falls in love with a blind woman because she understands what it is like to be different. He kills a man who asks her out on a date and says he cant trust the woman. He sets her hous eon fire and shoots himself.Everyone thinks that things will OK but its just a ploy.He doesnt kill himslef he takes the mans body with him,the man that takes the blind woman out on the date.
The assistant then returns

home to his family and they are all sat outside. His son goes inside to get something to eat and his dad follows him and sees that a mirror inside the house is smashed. He finds the killer has his son with a knife to his head.He attacks the man and eventually ends up killing him.

sorry for rambling and boring you all :o

You're welcome. :) I'm really sorry I couldn't bring you happier news. :( I can see how much it means to you. I sometimes have dreams about Juanqui's matches on the night before the match.

Lol, no it doesn't make me feel better. :( I'm not the kind of person who feels better if someone else is doing worse or just as bad. ;) That kind of perspective doesn't work for me. I would much rather see you have some time off and being cheerful and relaxed, like ILR. :) Sure, I'd be a little jealous, but I'd be happy you were in a good mood.

As for myself, I'm really going crazy over here. Now my aunt needs me as well for some project we started way back when. Now we have to finish it and I just want to scream and scream and scream. :fiery: There's no way I can do all that. I'm sooooooo tired and I still have to put in at least 3 more hours of work before I can go to bed. Sorry, I'm ranting again. :o I've been doing a lot lately.

Hi everyone:wavey:

You guys are all working so hard, I'm a big slacker here. I really need to kick myself to get started with my little research project that I've been dragging on. :o Procrastination is my middle name and I'm not proud of that.:(

That's indeed some good news. Keep going, Kiwi:bounce:

And that Basel draw...Timmy, Rogi and Roddick on the same side:eek: So I guess Roddick will go nowhere:D But probably not good news for the other 2. I'm happy with JC's, he got the spaniards on his side. Hi ILR :wavey:

Thanks for your Red Dragon review. So besides confused, do you like the movie? I watched Silence of the Lamb, but I heard Hannibal is not good so I skipped that. This one, Red Dragon, is a remake of a very good movie called "Man Hunter". I saw that long ago but don't remember a thing about that movie, probably was confused with the plot too. Anyway, I just finished reading Red Dragon the book. It was pretty good. So I'm just waiting for my memory of the book to wear out a bit before I go watch the movie. Also, waiting to see how everyone thinks about the movie.

I watched One Hour Photo last week. That movie with Robin Williams and Michael Vartan. Not as good a thriller as I thought or as the critic said. I was fairly disappointed, so not recommended by me.

While I was in the theatre, I saw a new movie trailer, movie called "Phone Booth" with Colin Farrell. I like Colin Farrell in Minority Report. And this new movie seems very interesting too. Unfortunately, they now have to delay the release of the movie bcos of that sniper killer in Washington. The movie is about sniper killer, what a coincident, and very sad that this thing really happen in real life.

And, I can't wait for the next Lords of the Rings movie. Too exciting. I love Lord of the Rings the book and I'm pleased that the movie was able to follow the book closely enough. Though I do realize that it's impossible to capture the readness of the masterpiece book itself. But it's nonetheless a great movie. And since the filmed all 3 Lord of the Rings similtaneously, so I'm expecting the same quality from the next two sequels...

Enough movie talk....and sorry if I bored you guys:o

A BIG HUG HERE Layla. It is OK to rant since it is a way to let out the pressure building up inside.

My motto (when things are going crazy which were lots of time during my consultant days and also as a full-time-stay-at-home-mom days) is 'I can only do one thing at a time and ENOUGH REST is always on top of my priority list'. Well, think about it, 'ENOUGH REST' is just under 'MY HUSBAND AND/OR SON IS SICK AND NEED CARING' on the list. You can also try my husband's motto which is 'GO TO BED, HAVE A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP, EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE TOMORROW MORNING'.

great review Emma. glad you had fun. :)

i've wanted to see Red Dragon cuz it's gotten good reviews here too. plus i saw the first two movies, and i have to see the prequel. Silence of the Lambs was a great movie imo, although a bit scary. okay a lot scary. Hannibal was disappointing tho, nothing like the first one.

who does Ed Norton play in Red Dragon?

Younes El Aynaoui Eliminated at St. Petersburg Open :)
.c The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (Oct. 21) -- Russia's Mikhail Youzhny beat Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco at the St. Petersburg Open 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 Monday.

The 20-year-old Youzhny beat El Aynaoui in straight sets in the quarterfinals at Stuttgart on the way to his first career ATP title in June.

Fourth-seeded Jiri Novak pulled out of the tournament due to a groin injury. He hurt himself in Saturday's semifinal win over qualifier Fabrice Santoro at Madrid and withdrew from the final against Agassi.

Earlier Monday, Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia overcame a one-set deficit to beat Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Germany's Nicolas Kiefer beat Harel Levy of Israel 6-0, 6-1. In a matchup of wild-card entries, Vladimir Voltchkov beat Michail Elgin 6-4, 6-0.

Martin Downs Nieminen in Straight Sets in Stockholm :(

.c The Associated Press

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (Oct. 21) -- Todd Martin beat Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 7-5 Monday in the first round of the Stockholm Open.

Martin, the 1998 champion and a finalist here in 1996, saved 14 break points during the match.

"I squeezed through quite a few times,'' Martin said. "I played well. The conditions were difficult. The court is slow for being indoors.''

The 32-year-old Martin was playing in his second match on the ATP Tour since August. He lost in the first round of the U.S. Open, and his only outing after the final Grand Slam of the year was when he played doubles in the Davis Cup tie against France in September.

Nieminen, who reached the final of this event last year, said he felt good in practice and early in the match.

"I had so many chances, but I didn't take them,'' he said. "Then it's easy to lose against these players.''

Third-seeded Guillermo Canas of Argentina, the only seed in action on opening day, needed three sets to beat Brazil's Andre Sa 6-1, 6-7 (6-, 6-3. Dutchman Raemon Sluiter beat American Vince Spadea 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in the only other singles match of the day.

Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt is the top seed and will play Thomas Enqvist on Tuesday.

Ouch Leo, Calculus is my favorite subject in my good old days in college.

Anyway, I think I saw on Sanex WTA site that both Lindsay and Patty are qualified in the yearend championship. I think you and I need to pump all our confidence mentally to Lindsay. Also, Lindsay need to be hungry for winning. She wanted very much to win the match with Justine because winning that match, she is very likely to qualify for the yearend event. As a result, she won that match even she was hurting. I hope she want to have a good performance in her hometown that she will be very hungry to win.

Davenport, Schnyder Qualify For Season-Ending Championships
Lindsay Davenport By Richard Pagliaro
10/21/2002

Patty Schnyder and Lindsay Davenport met in the Swisscom Challenge final yesterday and booked their place in the WTA Championships today. The WTA Tour announced both Schnyder and Davenport have qualified for the season-ending event, set for November 6-11th at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

It is the ninth time Davenport has qualified for the season-ending Championships.

A year ago, Davenport defeated Kim Clijsters in the semifinals to reach the season-ending final and secure the No. 1 ranking for the 2001 season, but sustained a right knee injury in the process that prevented her from playing Serena Williams in the final. Davenport underwent arthroscopic surgery on her knee in January and returned to the Tour in July. The 1999 season-ending champion is seeking her first title of the year following runner-up finishes at Los Angeles, New Haven, Moscow and Zurich.

The 23-year-old Schnyder capped the best week of her career by defeating Davenport 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-10), 6-3 in yesterday's Swisscom Challenge final to claim the first Tier I tournament title of her career in her home country. Schnyder saved a match point in the second set of the final. The victory vaulted her from No. 21 to No. 14 in the WTA Tour rankings and helped her secure a spot in the season-ending tournament.

congrats to lindsay on qualifying with only 8 tourneys played this year. :bounce:

Hi Vera,

Well, I moved here in August and we just have one of those longest hot summer. The weather is gorgeous now though. Wish you luck with the coming winter in Vancouver.

When I first moved to Canada, I have a choice to choose between Vancouver and Calgary and I ended up choosing Calgary because personally, I prefer cold and snow than cold and rain. But I enjoy spring and summer in your city. I visit frequently because I have a ton of first cousins living there.

Im gonna keep the Red Dragon name in mind, but its not on here yet. Maybe its one of those movies that will take forever to come. :fiery:

As for One hour photo, I saw it, and albeit it wasnt grand, it was not bad. Quite decent movie.

Simon, a friend from Australia, told me about a movie called Donnie Darko, which Im waiting for eagerly. I saw the trailer and it looks wonderful, cant wait.

As for the Lord of the Rings, I read all the books, watched the first movie on the cinema and then bought the dvd. Big fan they have in me. :p I cant wait for The Two Towers either. :D

Someone mentioned earlier about a movie 'The Ring'. This is a remake of a movie from Japan which was a very big hit in Asia a few years ago. I am not a horror movie fan but I heard from a lot of people who's a big fan of horror movie that this is very, very scary.

Okay, I supposed I was a little harsh on One Hour Photo. Some critics here compared it with Momento  That set up my high expectation. In reality, Momento is in another league, no comparison. I think the movie is a little too one-dimensional. And the last part, Robin Williams sitting in the room telling the detective how he's abused when he was a kid. That's the worse part of the movie IMO. I think that's a director is fault when you have to do it so deliberately, like that. That's why I think the movie lacks a little depth.

As for the Lord of the Rings, I read all the books, watched the first movie on the cinema and then bought the dvd. Big fan they have in me. :p I cant wait for The Two Towers either. :D

I did the same, bought the dvd and all. Did you also read the pre-quel "Hobbit"? Anyway, Lord of the Rings really rocks!

Hi Lee! :wavey: Welcome!

Very pleased to have you around. Thank you for your advice. I do take mini breaks by coming in here. ;) Unless I want to finish something before going to bed like today. Oh dear, it's 2 am! My deadline for the text is in two days so I have to push it as much as I can.

I'm glad this is your favorite forum. ;) It is kinda cozy, isn't it? I sure hope you'll be here often. :) We're here everyday as you can see. :o

Argh, I'm really sorry I missed all that movie talk. ILR, I enjoyed the first part of your review, but didn't want to read the second because the movie's just playing at our theaters and I intend to see it very soon, so I didn't want to know too much of the plot beforehand. I'm looking forward to it, as it has a great cast. :)

As for chocolate, Lindt all the way! :D But I do love Ferrero Rocher as well. :lick: And I'm crazy about After Eight. Mmmmm minty! :hearts:

Ok, maybe my brain wasn't so fried after all. ;) I hope I managed to formulate at least two coherent thoughts. :p Now I'm gonna crash into my bed and sleep until... yeah I wish. Goodnight Layla. Have a very good sleep. I don't know whether you can buy those American Ginshen tea bag and Korean Ginshen tea bag. Whenever I was pushed to my limit (i.e. extremely lack of sleep), I put together each of those tea bags and made a mug of ginshen tea. It gave a really good boost to my energy level and keep my head clear without any side effects (like finding pimples all over my face when I drank too much coffee).

Women's Power Rankings
Oct. 21, 2002

SportsLine.com's Power Rankings feature 10 players based on the past weeks' performances. It is not an official ranking based on points but takes into account the strength of schedule and the quality of play of each player during that period.

Rank Player Previous
1 Patty Schnyder -
Switzerland's Schnyder won the Swisscom challenge, in Zurich, Switzerland. She defeated Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova in the quarterfinals and USA's Lindsay Davenport in the final. She hadn't had such a nice run since the Family Circle Cup, in Charleston, North Carolina in April.
2 Lindsay Davenport 5
Davenport once again came close to winning her first title in more than a year. She lost her fourth final of the season in Zurich.
3 Maja Matevzic - Slovenia's Matevzic won the first event of her career in Bratislava, Slovakia last week. 2002 has been a breakthrough year for Matevzic, who has been playing on the Tour for two year. She had played four quarterfinals and one semifinal this year before Bratislava.
4 Conchita Martinez -
Spain's Martinez lost to eventual winner Schnyder in the semifinals in Zurich. She defeated USA's Jennifer Capriati 6-0, 6-3 in the second round.
5 Justine Henin -
Belgium's Henin lost two tie-breakers to Davenport in the semis of the Swisscom Challenge.
6 Iveta Benesova -
Czech Republik's Benesova played the first final of her career in Bratislava, thanks to wins over USA's Laura Granville and France's Nathalie Dechy.
7 Daniela Hantuchova 2
Hantuchova who broke into the world's top ten last week didn't make it past the quarterfinals in Zurich. She saved several match points in her match against Russia's Elena Dementieva before winning 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(6). She will be in Los Angeles for the season ending's finale.
8 Kim Clijsters 1
Belgium's Clijsters who defeated Hantuchova in the final in Filderstadt, Germany two weeks ago, feel to Davenport in the quarterfinals in Zurich last week.
9 Alexandra Stevenson 6
Although she loses three spots in the rankings, USA's Stevenson is still in it, thanks to her wins over Japan's Ai Sugiyama and Yugoslavia's Jelena Dokic in Zurich. She lots to Martinez in the quarterfinals.
10 Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian -
Switzerland's Mikaelian upset Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva and Russia's Anastasia Myskina to reach the quarterfinals of the Swisscom Challenge, in Zurich. She was stopped by Henin.

congrats to layla's girl! :bounce:

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

T. Martin: "It was a difficult match for me because the balls are heavy and slow which doesn't suit my game well. Jarkko ran up many of my shots today. I was fortunate to get myself out of some serious jams. My served saved me on several important occasions and that was a big help. Jarkko is a great guy and we actually spent some time in the player lounge today talking before the match."

awww, Todd is so kind. even tho it is too bad Jarkko lost today, at least it was to a really nice guy. good luck in your next round, Todd. ;)

Martin has to be the best player to never win a Grand Slam title.

:) Hmm... I wonder what coverage we get for the Paris-Bercy tournament... it's usually ESPN.

ILR

I like Cadbury's chocs too! Have you been to Bourneville's Cadbury World? It's the best English chocolate.

And I do like Lindt for Swiss but my fave is Belgian -- Neuhaus is good but pricey! Forget French, Dutch or German though...

I bought Haribo candies in France and passed by one of their outlets near Nimes, in the South of France. I think they had crocodile gummies...

Can't stay and talk, but I do wish you all a fabulous day! :) And best of luck to all my faves, even though I'm not even sure who's playing today. :o I'll check later.

Lee, we don't have ginseng tee in Slovenia. :( I remeber what my favorite drink used to be when I was travelling in the States. It was one of those yummy Arizona drinks. Green tea with honey and ginseng. Sooo refreshing and healthy. :lick: I stopped drinking coffee over a year ago because I was too addicted to it. Now I only drink it occasionally, because it is such a treat and life's too short not to enjoy our little pleasures. That's precisely why I quit; it stopped being a pleasure and became a necessity. I'm drinking a nice hot cup of coffee as we speak. ;) Hope it gets me through the day.

TH, thanks for the After Eights. :lick: Yum-yum. :D

What else, oh regarding Todd Martin. I used to dislike him for some reason, but have since changed my mind. The more interviews I read the more I like him. He's a really friendly guy with a wonderful sense of humour. One of the more intelligent players on the tour. The interview with him and James Blake when they were playing doubles (I forget which tournament it was :o I think it was just before the USO) was simply hilarious. They have such a wonderful chemistry together.

Hi Mrs. B, ILR, TH, RogiFan!

Yep, still working my ass off. I'm on my lunch break, watching 24 hours while eating and following the scores in Stockholm.

I'm sorry to report that another one of my faves bites the dust. Gambill took out Olivier Rochus in a tight 3rd set tie-break (8-6). :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: They both held match points. :( That just makes me so mad.

Mmmm, how could I forget Toblerone. :lick: I'm a huge honey lover, I have it for breakfast almost everyday. I also cook myself porridge for breakfast almost every morning, RogiFan. Except I throw in some poppy seeds while it's cooking and I make it with milk, not water. :lick: It's delicious, definitely my favorite breakfast. Lol, I love baking muffins too. My favourite is peanut butter, banana and chocolate.
