and i thought ESPN would show Agassi as usual

Agassi started an hour after their coverage (2 pm) and I saw in the Rogi forum, RogiFan said she turned on the coverage expecting to see Carlos Moya and saw Juan Carlos instead!

I'm SOOOOOOO happy I taped it too!! They did something nice for once!

TH, I forgot to tell you that Daniela also won her match, but only just. The score was 3-6 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6) and she did well to get though this bizarre match that swung this way and that. I didn't pay really close attention to the match as I was working but just a few quick notes. I'm sorry to say that Dani wasn't playing all that well. The match was littered by unforced errors by both players. She was really struggling but all credit to her for hanging in there while knowing she wasn't playing her best tennis. She had to save 4 match points in the 2nd set, but afterwards she played much better and finally found her rhythm. :) Elena cried when she left the court. She knew she had every opportunity to win the match but Daniela's determination to win was just too strong. And Dani is a better player after all, so she deserved to win it. :) It will give her so much confidence. She did well not to panic when made all those unforced errors and was still going for her shots.

That's too bad that Dani was playing badly :( I guess it was a letdown from last week. I'm surprised Kim is still playing so well

But I'm glad she won it. I think, like you said, that it will give her confidence to know she can still win even when she's not playing her best :)

Ok, as long as somebody does. I'm so curious to know what happened. :)

I forgot to add that Daniela's serve was very good today, while Elena made something like 14 double faults  (or even more, I forget).

Anyway, I'm happy Daniela won too. :) Who is she playing next?

Kimmy and Lindsay play against each other again. And again in QF. Pfffffft. I want to see them in the final. ;) One of them better win tomorrow. ;) :p

oh well i am happy 3-6 6-0 6-1

JC served a bagel and a breadstick for lunch...it was quite filling

......i kept saying to myself all day..."I hope they show JC's match"...and low and behold when I got home rewound the tape in the VCR and played...I saw a very familiar blond face....i was like "aaallrigght!"....finally ESPN does something smart. ;) :D

Hi everyone :wavey:

Congrats to Juanqui and Seb :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Damn that Novak for taking out Carlos    Carlos must be so very disappointed. :( I'm disappointed too, there goes my all spanish final hope. And Lopez is fighting so hard right now. What a high quality match, I supposed. None of them has lost a serve yet! But Go Feliciano, take Agassi out, then we'll have another all spanish match tomorrow.

Okay, I was just so surprised that ESPN showed JC, I thought it would be Moya. But I have to go watch the tape and I can tell you guys all about it. Well, I can give you a little bit since I did catch the last few games. JC's strokes were powerful, they both wiping the ball pretty hard. And Mal and Jimmy Arias, the commentators said JC had raised level after the first set. Played a lot more aggressive and he felt confident...He's hitting a lot more winners than Alex. Alex looked a little out of sort, but maybe JC is playing so well and forcing him to run around and swing late. They kept saying that Alex should go up to the net, serve and volley  Okay, maybe he should, but he's not exactly a brilliant serve and volleyer and JC has some killer passing ability! Anyway, it looked like a good match. So I'll go watch the tape and come back with more detail report.

Later, guys:)

If ESPN is really going to show this match tomorrow (which they will since they can), someone had an epiphany and decided Spanish guys playing in Spain, people will want to see that.

I can't wait to see my tape for the whole week, because Juanqui has the ability to wipe the floor with Agassi, and he will!!

Agassi Sets Up Quarter-Final Clash with Ferrero
38 minutes ago
By Kevin Fylan

MADRID (Reuters) - Andre Agassi won a late night battle of wills to see off Spanish wildcard Feliciano Lopez 7-6 6-7 7-5 at the Madrid Masters Thursday and set up a quarter-final meeting with Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Agassi needed every ounce of his resolve to beat Lopez, a tricky left-hander with a gigantic serve who was roared on by a packed crowd at the Madrid Rockodrome.

Lopez saved a match point on his own serve in the second-set tiebreak before finally giving Agassi a chance in game 11 of the third, double-faulting on the first of three break points.

The American second seed, serving with a 6-5 lead, missed his second match point but eventually clinched victory in two hours 23 minutes with a punched forehand beyond Lopez's reach.

"It's disappointing that someone had to lose a match like that," Agassi said. "I was prepared for him but I just couldn't do anything with his serve."

Agassi will go on to face Ferrero in a rematch of the French Open quarter-final won by the Spaniard.

Ferrero, seeded fifth, was also taken to three sets by Alex Corretja (news) but his 3-6 6-0 6-1 victory was easy by comparison.

Corretja took advantage of some sloppy mistakes from his opponent to win the first set but Ferrero finished up playing near-perfect tennis from deep behind the baseline.

Frenchman Sebastian Grosjean, seeded seventh, moved smoothly through to the last eight with a 7-6 6-1 success against Mikhail Youzhny of Russia.

The Frenchman goes on to meet Agustin Calleri, the Argentine qualifier who overcame 15th seed Thomas Johansson of Sweden 6-4 6-4.

That was a blow to Johansson's hopes of making the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai at the end of the season.

Johansson, the Australian Open (news - web sites) champion, needs to move up from 14th at the start of the week to overtake Albert Costa (news), who was in eighth place, to take the last berth open to a grand slam winner ranked between eight and 20.

NOVAK CLOSING IN

Also putting his Shanghai places in jeopardy was Carlos Moya (news), who missed a match point before going down 6-7 6-4 7-5 to the dangerous Jiri Novak.

The Czech was in 11th place going into Madrid but he is now closing in on one of the top seven places in the ATP Entry System and a spot in Shanghai.

After two evenly matched sets Spaniard Moya, the number eight seed, served for the match at 5-3 only for his nerve to fail him.

Moya then missed a simple backhand for the match with Novak serving at 4-5 and paid the price as the number 11 seed roared back to break in the next and serve out for the win in two hours 17 minutes.

The two first matches of the day were both one-sided affairs.

Paradorn Srichiphan of Thailand scampered his way to a 6-4 6-2 success against Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia, while Fabrice Santoro of France was enjoying an even simpler 6-0 6-2 victory over David Nalbandian of Argentina.

Paradorn, who beat Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten (news) and British fourth seed Henman in the first two rounds, made it three classy wins out of three as he ran Ljubicic around the court.

Okay, here comes my report. Hope you guys enjoy it!:D (I won't be going point to point but will mention those big good one)

Commentators are Malival Washington and Jimmy Arias. They opened the program with, guess what? Replaying some RG clips :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: blah blah blah... Mal asked Jim if it's bcos JC not a big match player that he didn't win RG. Jim said, he didn't think so bcos JC is the hero of Spain winning DC, that's big time...Thank God, he did win DC for Spain, or he'll forever been doomed, or be called nasty name like....

First game Alex serve. They (always mean the commentators) said Alex's game, which he's taking the ball early and hit it flatter in this indoor court. At 30 all, JC hit a beautiful cross court winner to get to break point, then Alex DF and give the game to JC.

The crowd is very quiet. JC serves, his first serve is not on. Alex on the other hand seems rushing. By 30 all second game, Alex has 5 UE, JC 1 UE. Next point, Alex has a great approach, come to net and put an overhead away, gets a BP. Another winner to open court, Alex won the break back.

1 all Alex serve. His second serve, he come to net to volley, but JC hit a cross court passing shot, winner 0/15. Then 2 errors from JC, Ace from Alex and a slow return from JC, quickly to Alex 2-1.

JC missed another first serve, 2nd serve not good, Alex hit a winner cross court, 0/15. Alex at this point, overpowering JC, flattening out his forehand and hit another FH down the line winner. He took the ball early. 0/30. Alex goes for another winner down the line, but wide, 15/30. JC seems to be pressing a bit now. hit a cross court but wide, BP. 2nd serve again but a good one, Alex put into net. 1 BP saved. Another 2nd serve combined with a good cross court FH, lots of spin, another BP saved. By now, JC's first serve percentage is only 45%. But then, he hit an Ace to get to game point. 2nd serve, cross court winner. Game 2-2.

Alex serves, but hit an error 0/15. Good serve to 15 all. Then Alex serve and volley, but hit long 15/30. JC another error 30 all. They both seems struggling on serve. Pretty sloppy so far. Alex hit an Ace to 40/30. Next point, JC gets to net, and played a drop volley to get the game to deuce. His first time to the net, and Mal started saying how he would never come to net last year...and he needs to improve the net game...blah blah blah. Alex then serves a body, S/V, JC tries to get out of the way and hit a short return, Alex volley winner. At this point, Mal and Jim both agree that Alex is the more aggressive one (bcos he serve and volley:D) Alex hold 3-2.

JC serves. Alex BH winner, cross court winner, 0/30. Then the next point, JC comes to net but Alex' lop sent him running back to the baseline and he hit a between legs, but clipping the net. Usually PMac will just start laughing at a between legs shot. But Jim was nice to say that it's not too bad, if the ball went over the net, bcos it's so low, Alex will have difficulty handling it. So good for Alex that it didn't go over the net. Alex broke at love. Mal and Jim liking Alex's aggression.

Alex serve, come to net and force JC to hit wide, then another winner 30/0. DF followed by a good serve pushing JC wide to open the court, half volley, forced an error from JC. 40/15. Then, first serve, Alex hit a short ball, JC unloaded and hit a huge FH winner. An angry forehand they said, to show his frustration, maybe he should get angry more. 40/30. Error from JC, game to Alex. 5-2.

JC serves to stay in the match. 30/15. He's only winning 50% of first serve that went in. Second serve 4 of 11. Not good serving so far. Alex won 80% of his first serve when it's in and 9 out of 19 for second. UF error, JC 5, Alex 14. Alex is the one taking more risk so far and controlling the outcome. But did get the game 5-3.

Alex serving for set. First point, Alex mishit, ball fly to the stand. 2nd point, he got JC running on defense but hit really wide again. Alex showing a little nerves 0/30. Then it's JC's turn to put in some error, 15/30. JC powerful FH, Alex scramble to return, open the court for JC to hit a winner. 15/40. Alex has a good body serve, get to the net to hit a winner, save BP. Next point, JC went for a big FH winner but got the tape. Deuce. Another JC error, Alex gets to Set point. Then, a 27 strokes rally. Both hitting the ball very hard. JC came to net, but force to hit a weak BH overhead mid court. Alex force him back to the baseline. They exchanged shot, running around, JC finally try to hit a big top spin FH but went long. Point of the match, Mal and Jim gets excited. Alex won the first set.
JC 8 W/7UE. Alex 15W/14 UE.

2nd set:
JC big first serve winner followed by DF. 15/15. His first serve won 6 of 11. Second serve won 6 of 13. Still not serving well. Next point, a big dipping passing shot from Alex, JC at the net, FH volley drop to the open court, Alex can't reach. Then JC put in a first serve winner. Another error from Alex and game JC 1-0.

Alex looks a little shaky now. Mal and Jim think he started looking shaky when he last serving for the set. But JC's *silly* errors gave the set to Alex. Alex serving. JC big cross court winner. Then followed by another big FH forcing Alex to return long. 0/30. Alex S/V, put a great approach shot down the middle deep enough to touch the baseline. But JC hit a passing shot with an amazing angle. Mal thinks Alex was surprised that the ball returned so he couldn't get there. Another Alex error. He got broke @ love.

Mal at this point, started praising JC. Said JC is one who's no matter at what point of the game, is able to hit winners anyway. . He said one can't be sure bcos JC can always come back from trailing. Then Jim joined in. Saying that JC is one who never gives up, he's not one that can be discouraged, that he'll just keep fighting.:D :D :D Okay, I like Mal and Jim.

Next game, Alex' not putting much of a fight. Lots of error, JC won this easily. Then I think they cut one game out cos after commercial, it's 4-0.

Alex is getting really sloppy. Mal and Jim think maybe he's thinking about next set. JC comes to the net and put a BH volley solidly at 30/0. Alex at net, JC try to lop but didn't past Alex, and he overheaded a winner 30/15. Mal wants JC to start serve and volley now. Okay guys, one step at a time. He did come to the net 2 times this game and won both point. Alex net point is getting less successful. JC won this one. 5-0
JC UE 10 Alex UE 20.

Alex serve to stay in. First 2 point ended in errors. 15 all. Then, JC hit big, pulling alex wide and then a big cross court, too much to handle for Alex. 15/30. Jim now thinks that JC has raised his level quite a bit, Alex dropped a little but he still thinks that JC raised level is contributing to his getting control of the game. JC is clearly more agressive and hitting winners more in this set. The set ended in Alex DF. Set 2 to JC.
Alex's 1st serve won 12/20 and 2nd 15/25.

Mal thinks now Alex needs to up his 1st %, and Jim thinks he needs to S/V.

3nd set.
JC serve, error from Alex. Then 2nd point, 2nd se. JC hit a big FH, pinned Alex at the baseline and hit a beautiful drop shot. JC than Ace, and a good serve give him chance to get to net and hit CC winner. 1-0

Alex is getting beaten at baseline, Jim said. Error, Ace, Error... another BP for JC on Alex's serve. Jim continues, saying that Alex is not playing his typical style, not as much top spins. That's why he is making a lot of errors. So Jim said Alex should S/V:confused:  (Now it really got me. He's making a lot of errors bcos of changing his style, so let's make more drastic change...hmmm, that makes a lot of sense. Granted though, he got beaten at the baseline, so it's not much he can do there, maybe?) Crowd started making more noise, to support Alex. He needs that. It's deuce now. Great long rally. Alex hit a deep approach, come to net and JC's lop long. Alex Av. Then, he SERVES and VOLLEY! Won the point and took the game. Mal and Jim were overjoyed. Fighting to claim the credit. Jim said "See, he listened to me, S/V". Mal said, "Ya, he listened to me too, put a first serve in and up his first serve %") lol @ both of them:rolleyes: 1 all

JC DF, then Alex's error, JC then puts in another error, 15-30. Jim thinks that JC is getting a little shaky now. Maybe he's losing a little confident since Alex seems to come back to the game. At this point, Jim thinks the momentum is not on both side, they are even, he said. JC W21, UE14, Alex W18, UE 27. Then JC Ace his serve, back to 30all. Jim thinks he gained some good back from that ACE. Another good service winner, then next point, big GH to corner winner. JC 2-1.

Alex serve, a winner and an error, 15 all. Net helped Alex, 30/15. Then next point. Alex hit a really deep approach shot but JC whipped a passing shot cross court and it's a winner. It really is a good approach and Mal agreed. Jim said Alex's needs to hit a heck of an approach if he didn't want to get passed by JC. (Damn right, then stop saying he should S/V). 30 all. Alex seems now want to S/V, but he's missing his first serve. He just put 2 errors and gave the break to JC. 3-1.

JC serves. He's very aggressive, his shots are deep at the baseline and very powerful, forcing errors from Alex. 40-0. The last point, Alex released some frustration and hit the ball long. Poor Alex, seems like he had enough. JC 4-1.

Alex serve, JC a FH winner. Then another very powerful rally from JC, forcing Alex to run cross court, then he ran around his FH and hit a weird looking shot, a winner Alex can't reach. It appeared that JC hesitated, he wants to hit a drop shot, but he changed his mind at last min, hence a weird looking shot. JC couldn't help but smiled a little, probably thinking:"Wow, what a silly shot and I still got away with it.) Jim called this faked drop shot but not really, he can't really named the shot. But he said, when a player hesitated, they usually hit an error, JC hesitated and hit a winner, everything is coming to his way. 15/30. JC seeming in control at the next point, then he came into the net, Alex just hit a beautiful cross court pass winner. 30 all. Alex gave another error, he seems pressing now. BP. Then DF, Game to JC 5-1. Alex is very frustrated, he wants to throw his racquet but he didn't.

JC serving for the match. 2 sloppy errors, 15 all. Big FH from Alex, JC returned long 15/30. JC runs around for a FH down the line winner 30 all, he held the ball to last min so it made it hard for Alex to read which direction he's gonna hit. Then, Alex, another errors. JC made Alex runs corner to corner, then JC came to the net, just to see Alex hitting a running FH down the line beautiful passed him and landed inched inside the baseline. Deuce. JC, another big FH cross court forced an error from Alex. Match point. JC hit a shot low and short, close to the net, drawing Alex to come to the net and hit an error. JC won. yah, i wasn't loving this new commentator Jimmy Arias either. and i've always hated Mal Washington b/c he has no idea what the fuck he's talking bout. can't belive i'm saying this, but i want PMac and Cliffy D back in the commentator booth on ESPN! enough with these two idiots. but i think we'll have Jim and Mal for the rest of the week. PMac and Cliffy should be back for Tennis Masters Cup tho... hopefully.

:( I'm crushed. I hope they are doing the weekend, or TMS Paris, or something before the Master's Cup.

WHAT?!

From http://www.kim-clijsters.com:

Latest on the Porsche:

Kim takes the money, not the Porsche!

Dad Lei said: "We have asked how things went and apparently we could choose: the car or the money. It was a 911 Boxster and it appeared that it is less worth than the prize money.
Lindsay Davenport however took the car last year, but then it was a Carrera, with a value higher than the prize money."
Dad Leo also asked the tournament organisators explicitly not to use the pic of Kim (who has a contract with Mitsubishi!) with the Porsche for publicity reasons. "We can't stop it as official photo of the tournament", he admits. "But it should only be used for that purpose then."

:D :D :D I tried. Glad you guys like it.
Who is this Arias guy? I'm sure he's been doing commentation before but I can't remember him. Well, it's pretty sure that we'll get Agassi and JC's match on tomorrow, I supposed. I don't think there'll be any change on commentator, though I would like to see PMac on again, just to see what he'll say when JC beat Agassi again. :D

Well, I think JC will do really well tomorrow. Playing Agassi will give him a lot of motivation. BTW, Agassi was asked who's in the New Balls that impressed him, he said Lopez, Hewitt and Federer. Okay, did he just trying to block his memory of being spanked by JC in RG? Poor man, still in denial. :p Let JC refresh his memory tomorrow.

Now, VAMOS JUAN CARLOS!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Go claim Agassi!

Oh, before I go, victorious smile.

Thank you so much for your in-depth reports Leo and Vera! :) I haven't had a chance to read them yet as I just got here but I'm looking forward to it.

I just want to tell you how angry I am at the **** DSF channel. I knew they wouldn't be true to their promise. Of the 1-hour show, they showed 45 minutes of Agassi's match. And only the last point of Juanqui's. :( I'm telling you they're ignoring him on purpose. :fiery: I bet the one time they won't show Agassi's match this week will be tomorrow. :p Argh, that's so frustrating.

I must admit that I'm not a huge fan of Lopez. I don't like the way he swings his raquet. I also felt that Agassi wasn't exactly playing his best tennis yesterday. ;) Let's hope he will still be a little rusty today. :)

Q. The fact of already being qualified for Shanghai, does that make you more comfortable? Do you really come here to win Madrid?

ANDRE AGASSI: I come here to win Madrid. For me, if I'm 2 in the world or 5 in the world, No. 8, No. 9, it doesn't matter. I need to either finish No. 1 or come here to win tournaments. That's my challenge, is to beat everybody I play.

What can I say except that I'm heartbroken! Poor Juanqui.

I watched it til 3-2. Well, he wasn't playing all that bad at that point. Of course, I can't bear to watch anymore though, knowing that it's all going down hill afterward. I think the key is that 2nd game when he carelessly gave the game away with UEs and DF. And his serve, 1st serve is so off, I think 2 service games, he only have 1/3 good first serve. When he got a first serve in, he's in control and most of the time, ended the point with a clean winner. But his second serve almost put him into trouble immediately, putting him on defense right after he served it and Baldy was able to make him run around endlessly until he made a UE.

Now my hope is on Seb. Pls go spank Baldy bad tomorrow to avenge for my lost today.

I hate Baldy, I think I prefer to see Juanqui lost to a nobody like you know who, than to Baldy. Baldy should retire asap for the sake of men tennis. Can you image what will happen if he overtakes Hewitt to be #1 in the world, at 32? That will open the can of worms called what have the New Balls done lately? Let's bash men tennis and the New Balls all over again.

*sigh*. Someone help me to get out of this blue, pls!

Seems like you were able to watch the whole match, jcsting. So he was bad, eh. 5 games that I watched and the agonizing pain mounting in the chest just gotten unbearable... I think his priority now is to beef up his second serve and makes more consistent of his first. I hope he get another chance in the near future to spank Baldy and take his revenge. Well, he humiliated Baldy in French, he should remember that he can do it again.

A very sad day indeed as Rogi also lost. The mere possibility of an Agassi Novak final is making me sick. Which is worse, Agassi winning Madrid and makes fucking history, or Novak getting 100 points and past Juanqui on his way to Shanghai, both thoughts make me want to vomit:eek:

I wouldn't worry about Fabrice's head-to-heads TH. ;) The first two matches took places years ago and this year he did win. Apparently he's playing really well in this tournament. I mean they way he served a bagel and a breadstick to David! And he took out an in-form Federer. I'm sure he can take care of Novak too. :)

On a more somber note, did you guys see the homepage of the Madrid TMS? I almost choked when I saw that huge title. I'm not gonna repeat it here, it's too painful and embarassing. But Juanqui and everyone else should never forget that he overpowered Agassi in RG and made him incredibly irritable and frustrated. :)

I'm liking Agassi less and less and I too found myself dreaming of his retirement. You're right, Vera. Can you imagine all the articles written about the old guns and the new balls? My worst nightmare. As if the US final wasn't enough for one year.

;) [note the apt title]

July 6, 2001 ESPN

The Ugly American
by Curry Kirkpatrick

LONDON -- Agassi-Hole?

Well, yeah, it was Shine Dome himself who waddled smack into another one. Or was it a ditch, a pit, a funk, a choke? Call it what you will. America's Favorite Sincerity Boy turned another winning position in a Grand Slam into a rather nasty scam, and not even the leader of the free world could save him this time. Or ex-leader.

Andredians, not to be confused with Androids although their haircuts are usually similar, will recall how their near-balding beloved, in the French Open quarterfinals, was on the brink of blowing out Sebastien Grosjean when William Jefferson Clinton stole the spotlight and cameo-ed just in time to watch Agassi fade out -- losing three sets in approximately 33 seconds. "I never saw him," said an obviously enraged Agassi.

On Friday in the men's semifinals at Wimbledon there was both a Kennedy and a Jackson in the royal box -- whom Andre undoubtedly also did not see -- but they were neither royals nor dead presidents.

It was Agassi, in fact, who turned up dead -- a 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 8-6 loser to Pat Rafter (the popular king of Queensland, whom Agassi was playing for the third year in a row at this stage of the Championships) in a match of splendor and struggle that was, as usual, besmirched by the defeated Las Vegan who is as sore and poor a loser as ... whom? Tyson? Nixon? The Mets? Benjamin Bratt?

Reporter: People raved about the level of tennis when you played Patrick here last year. What did you think about it today?

Agassi: I thought it sucked.

That's specifically because the Australian Open champion had the Australian beaten oh, maybe five or six or lebenty-leben times before blowing his cool, his top and then the whole kit and kaboodle. "Not too many matches that you play, something like that happens, it turns around for you," said Rafter.

It turned around once when Agassi was in control, up two sets to one and on serve in the fourth. But when Rafter's sliced crosscourt backhand was called good -- replays showed it was the correct call -- it was the second point in a row Agassi felt he'd been gypped out of. So Double A protested and then was broken for 4-2. At the next changeover he came railing at the chair umpire. "Bull---- call, bull--- call," he said. "You've got plenty of [lines] people. Get rid of him [the offending linesman]. Get another one. They're all over the place. You want me to find one for you?"

Naturally, the ump didn't. And so, serving in the next game, naturally, Agassi tank-blasted a serve so hard (122 mph, probably his fastest of the contest) and off-target, it touched down on the baseline (!) before careening into the backstop, forcing the same linesman to quickly get out of the way. Agassi saluted him by holding up his next service ball.

Reporter: Did that ball just get away from you? or were you aiming at somebody?

Agassi: Yeah, I was trying to hit the line, and it just got a little bit away from me.

Yeah, and Barbra Streisand wants another chance.

It was hardly stunning that when Pinocchio arrived at the fifth set -- precisely where Agassi lost to Rafter last July here -- he wasn't exactly in a joyful frame of mind. All the same, Agassi grasped firm control of the match again by breaking Rafter in the first game, holding and swiftly moving to 15-40 on his opponent's serve in the third game. "If I lost that game, the match was over, simple as that," said the Aussie.

But Agassi had a sitter forehand pass that Rafter guessed right on and immediately volleyed a winner. Agassi had three more break points for 3-0 and lost them. He had another point for 4-1, a double break lead again, and lost it. The thing is, he wasn't gagging. The thing is, the other guy -- one of the toughest competitors as well as nicest human beings in sport, despite that awful decision to get his wondrous flowing locks hacked into a George Michael sponge-cut that reveals a birthmark white-hair spot -- just kept digging and hustling and charging and putting Agassi under severe pressure that the American could not possibly withstand.

Still, Agassi served for the match at 5-4 and was two points from victory. But again, the resilient Rafter repelled him, whirling an approach to the baseline chalk and then volleying crosscourt to once again break serve and deadlock an encounter that would finish one minute shy of three hours. At 6-all and now ascendant in most of the long rallies, Rafter reached 40-0, but a stream of Agassi returns brought him still another break point. But the 29-year-old Aussie -- who has a chronic sore shoulder and has said he may retire at the end of the year -- did not want this to be his final match at The Big W.

He courageously drop-volleyed to save.

Having spinached his huge chances for the last hour, Agassi did it again. So, naturally, he loudly swore at somebody. Whoever it was -- Rafter, himself, the linesman, the inventor of Rogaine, surely not his current alleged squeeze, Steffi Graf -- a lineswoman named Wendy Smith heard him, marched herself to the chair and reported the oath to the umpire who gave Andre a "code violation for obscenity."

Rafter promptly held for 7-6 and just as promptly benefited from three Agassi backhand errors for 0-40, triple match point. He won the match on the third one. Obviously upset as he stalked to the net to shake hands, Agassi this time rifled a ball all the way to the opposite backstop which coincidentally came close to searing Ms. Smith's alert ears. Moreover, it was also obvious Agassi was not humming the old Beach Boys' lyric: "Wennn-dy, Wendy Left Me Alone."

"Listen, I'm sure [Andre] was very upset. He had his chances," said Rafter, letting the loser off the hook. "I thought it was a little bit unfair of that lady to report him. I guess she took the rules a little bit seriously ... I think [she] really got to him in the end ... He pretty well snapped ... He was a bit hacked off."

Reporter: Did you feel it was a little unfair?

Agassi: Yeah, big time. Big time. I blame her husband for that.

Reporter: Did you aim at her at the end with the ball?

Agassi: No, no. I meant to hit that in the net.

Yeah, and Brooke Shields can act her way out of a paper bag.

Of course, Agassi would be fined $2,000 for the "audible obscenity" -- but Wimbledon referee Alan Mills claimed he wasn't concerned about Ms. Smith. "He didn't hit her," Mills said. "She was athletic."

A while later, continuing to regenerate himself back into his younger days when he was a tacky imitation of tennis' rude punk twins -- a kind of Jimmy-John McEnConnors -- Agassi embarrassed himself some more. "It wasn't like I was losing my mind out there," he told the BBC. "[The lineswoman] to go running up there ... It was classless."

Classless? This, from a guy who has made a career out of being not just AA -- but AI? Abhorrent and Insulting? In 1996, Agassi's sewer mouth should have gotten him kicked out of the Olympics in Atlanta -- which he ended up winning. In '96 he was thrown out of the tournament in Indianapolis for profane language and in '99 he got the boot from the tournament in San Jose for the same thing.

Classless?

The real problem is that for all of Agassi's seven Grand Slams -- at 31, he's one of only five men to win all four majors -- the occasional talent and the occasional charm, the guy is constantly worming up the works with another inglorious trash show.

An interested spectator at Wimbledon on Friday -- not non-Presidents Kennedy and Jackson -- once made a movie which defined behavior humorously close to this. His name is Jack Nicholson. The movie is One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

Hi Layla:wavey:

Good for you to execise. I skip my swimming this morning to watch the match.:(

I saw that headline. I just want to tell them to SHUT THE FUCK UP! :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: No respect for Juanqui, so typical of ATP.

I think Seb can do it. He won that indoor in Paris and was in the final in last year's TMC, this is definitely a surface Seb likes. If Seb wins this one, it will be a sweet ending afterall. And that can help lifting some pressure of him having to defend in Paris to maintain his ranking in ESR.

LOL, the front of my TMS Madrid homepage is that they are still playing live on court

I'm not worried about Santoro's head to heads. If he gets to the final he has an excellent chance. On the other hand, as if a Novak-Agassi final wasn't bad enough, Agassi rules Novak!:sad: So go Frenchies.

Ya, Baldy choked too, even if he looks so non-human. Made me laughed whenever I saw him getting jumpy on court and making his little-step walks like a Penguin...:D :D :D Well, Penguin is indeed a lot more lovely, he just looked plain stupid.

Of course I mean in real life :) He has really grown a lot as a player, just in the past year. He's reached two finals this year, and I think he has a great chance at Stockholm next week :) Hitman said he played some brilliant points against Juan Carlos this week, so I hope he can translate that to next week!

Oooooooh, does that mean you might have a sliver of time to write a new installment? Very exciting!

Okay, I couldn't let this one go:

Agassi, Grosjean advance to semifinals at TMS Madrid
October 18, 2002

MADRID (Ticker) - It was one of those perfect days for Andre Agassi as the second-seeded American dispatched No. 5 Juan Carlos Ferrero, 6-3, 6-2, Friday in the quarterfinals of the $2.33 million Tennis Masters Series - Madrid.

Showing off his brilliant groundstrokes, Agassi ushered out the last remaining Spaniard in the draw in 1 hour, 14 minutes.

"There are days that go that well, you hit the ball and it falls into place. It has been a great day for me," Agassi said. "I felt I wasn't just playing well, but that everything was going my way. I expected it to be very hard and I have worked hard thinking about it."

The 32-year-old American lost their only previous meeting in the quarterfinals of the French Open in June. But that encounter came on clay, not an indoor hard court like the one at the Rockodromo.

"Maybe this is more my element than Ferrero's. It's a lot different on clay, but Ferrero should take the way I played today as a compliment," Agassi said. "Playing Ferrero in Paris meant I was much better prepared to play him here. Experience has taught me to use my disappointments to get better rather than to get discouraged."

Agassi, who is tied for the ATP lead in titles this year with four, will play seventh seed Sebastien Grosjean of France in the semifinals.

"(Grosjean) is a good counter-puncher with really good firepower," said the U.S. Open runner-up, who lost two of their three encounters. "He has a great game and is very fast, so I'll have to be aggressive and be in control."

I totally agreed. Andre the wolf:D In fact, he had never win my respect, I dislike him from the very beginning bcos of just what that ESPN articles pointed out. But then, since he became Steffi's hubby and the daddy of her lovely son, I decided to give him the benefit of a doubt. Just a quick word before I leave for the birthday lunch.

TH, Kimmy and Dani won yesterday. :) They defeated Bovina/Henin 5-7 6-3 6-4. They were still playing when I went to bed. Congrats!

The official webpage of the tournament has a live scoreboard, if you want to follow today's semis. http://www.swisscom-challenge.com/SCC2002/index-main-en.php3

Hey, Maja Matevzic made it to the semi-final in Bratislava (it might be her first, I'm not sure). She was down 1-6 1-5    and made a spectacular turn-around, winning 1-6 7-5 6-1. :D Congrats!

Yesterday's interview. He's so cute :)

Q. What happened to you today with Agassi?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Nothing special. He played a great match. I was quite strong at the beginning. I was well-prepared, confident. I lost the second game. From there, it got complicated. I tried to play at my best level. He played very strong, without any unforced errors. The ball here flies very fast. Everything went quickly. I tried to play well, but he played better.

Q. Did you feel at a certain point you couldn't do anything?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: From the beginning, I realized that the first game I played well, and it was hard to win it. So I felt that it was going to be a very tough match, and I would have to play at the top level. The first game I played very well, but he won that game. I started to play with more errors. But he was very precise during the match, very focused. He made me run a lot. He had the advantage most of the time. I tried, but he had it clearly.

Q. Feliciano had a good serve yesterday, and that's why his match was long. Do you agree?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, I realized that I may have had to hit too many second serves. Of course, if I had served better, my first serve would have changed the outcome.

Q. Do you feel powerless?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, not powerless. I played with him in Roland Garros. I know if I play at my best level, I can win.

Q. He was saying in Roland Garros, that's your surface, and this is his surface.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, here both of us ran a lot. Especially the second set, I ran more.

Q. What was your impression of the tournament?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Great impression. Not only from just me, but all the players. The standard of Masters Series, it's there. The crowds have been great. They've been supporting me through the hard moments. For me, it's been a super tournament.

Q. What did you lack in the match?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, to return the ball one more time than my opponent. Here, all of us, we are very good, it's always very close. The Spanish participation has been good.

Q. Shanghai, do you see it close?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I was doing numbers right now, calculating my position (laughter). I think I have 450 points right now, and I'm waiting to see what Federer and Novak will do. But I think it actually depends on myself. It comes down to me, I think.

The draw for Stockholm is out!! (http://www.stockholmopen.temp.pi.se/singles.htm)

Jarkko's draw looks pretty good. He could see Hewitt in the semis and there is the possibility for a rematch of last year's final against Schalken, too.

Leo, the only problem with the nightmare final is that NOVAK HAS NEVER BEATEN AGASSI. On any surface. If he manages to do it tomorrow, it wouldn't be so bad . . . but he would shoot up the race and could possibly knock Juanqui out of 4th place. That would also not be so good

Hi, Leo! Hi, Hackie!

Yeah, i saw that match of Lindsay today and she was struggling there in the second set, she really looked like she was in great pain, she kept rubbing something to her right shin during changeover. Luckily she pulled through, served well, and her baseline shots fh & bh were vintage Lindsay. I saw her play in ZH 2 years ago, she always seem to play well here. Her fiance was there, sitting very quitely...he's a cutie! Well, good luck to her tomorrow, playing Patty on home soil would be a challenge...

Hmm, controversy on the ladies tour . . .

Henin accuses Davenport of faking injury
Defending champion Lindsay Davenport was accused of feigning injury to gain an advantage as she battled to a tight win over Belgium's Justine Henin and claimed a place in the final of the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich on Saturday.

Davenport now meets local favourite Patty Schnyder, who beat Spain's Conchita Martinez 6-0 6-3, in Sunday's final.

But the American, who is bidding to win her first tournament since undergoing knee surgery in January, should not have made the final according to Henin.

"She was in such a state, she was crying and limping and looked as if she could not go on," said the 20-year-old Henin. "I was sure she would retire, but she didn't. And it was very difficult to play against her like that."

Henin said that from 4-1 up in the second set, when she looked certain to press home her advantage against an injured opponent, she lost her concentration because of Davenport's antics.

"It is very hard to play against players who do all the things that she did today," she added. "For me, it was tough. Somehow, she played and she carried on. I didn't know what to expect in that part of the second set. It was not easy."

Henin made particular reference to the way in which the three-times Grand Slam winner hopped around and sought treatment during the latter stages of the second set.

With Davenport struggling with the ankle injury, Henin raced to a 4-1 lead in the second set, only for Davenport to reel of the next three games to level the scores.

Later, with Henin leading 6-5 after grabbing another service break in the 11th game, the American limped dramatically before making another near-miraculous recovery when she ran out to a 40-0 lead that included one running cross-court forehand pass that left the Belgian watching.

"I don't want to say anything that I will really regret about this," said Henin. "But if you are limping one minute, you don't usually play the next game the way she did.

"It was a very difficult experience and difficult for my concentration. I didn't know if she could play from what I saw at the other end of the court.

"But she won 7-6 7-6. That's tennis isn't it? I have to be positive. It was my first time here and there is another tournament ahead."

Mrs. B
10-19-2002, 10:07 PM
She did hop around the court there, but knowing Lindsay i could not imagine her to be faking an injury or anything like that to try to win a match.

Hi everyone! :wavey:

A fabulous day? Not even the least. It's another nightmare day. The dreaded final will take place (this reminds me so much of the USO  ) I have decided to pretend Agassi doesn't exist. ;) Who won Madrid TMS 2002. Nobody, they had to cancel the final due to unforseen circumstances. Apparently, one of the finalists suddenly and inexplicably ceased to exist. :p It was on the front page of every magazine lol. :D

If you mean it was a fabulous day because Lindsay won, think again. :( It was so painful and agonizing to watch that match. Of course I'm elated that she won :) and has a chance of winning the first title of the year, but it killed me to see her in so much pain. It's such a shame too. She was playing so well in the first set. Well they both were, but Lindsay was particularly impressive. She was serving extremely well, which is one factor that saved her in the end. And Juju's serve was really unreliable.

Lindsay called for a trainer at the beginning of the second set and she was in real trouble out there. Henin managed to take a 4-1 (double-break) lead when Lindsay called the trainer again. From then on she really focused. She was brilliant really. She made sure she didn't have to move very much at all and her power shots was working miracles. Admittedly, Henin did let her back into the match. She completely lost her concentration. Lindsay won 4 successive games to take a 5-4 lead. Henin held to make it 5-5, but then Lindsay got broken again and my heart sank. Not Lindsay's though. She broke right back and ran to a 6-2 lead in the tie-break. The first point of the tie-break (Lindsay's serve) Lindsay hit a horrible smash into the net, but she didn't let that bring her down and she won the next 6 points. Henin saved 3 matchpoints (2 were on her serve) but Linday won the match with a service winner. :D

Ok, I'll bounce now. Woooohooo Lindsay!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Then Juju made me really angry. The way she accused Lindsay of faking the injury was in such bad taste. Just because she couldn't handle her opponent's injury doesn't mean she can turn around and accuse her of bad sportsmanship. Shame on you Juju. Lindsay really didn't deserve to hear your comments after all she's been through. In an interview Juju claimed that she could not possibly play that game at 5-6 down as brilliantly as she did had she really been injured. That is such bull and so misleading. Hello, we saw the match Justine! Lindsay ran to a 40-0 lead because she smacked brilliant return winners and didn't even HAVE to move.

Like Mrs. B said, Lindsay isn't exactly the person you would accuse of faking an injury. Like Lindsay said in an interview, there were so many things Henin could to her that she just didn't, like drop shots, running her from side to side, balls out wide. Instead, she put everything down the middle for her and made it so much easier for her. For her to be dissing Lindsay like that, I'm speechless...

I really hope Lindsay will be ok tomorrow. I think she was relieved after the second medical time-out when the trainer said she didn't think it was the bone, as that was Lindsay's main concern and that's why she played better. :)

There's an audio interview on the official site. http://www.swisscom-challenge.com/SCC2002/index-en.php3?page=news/spielplan.php?lang=e&leftsect=playplan&

GO LINDSAY!!! Win your first title of the year please!!! :D

Leo, I transcribed the on-court interview right after the match. I don't know if you'll be here to see it, but here it goes.

INT: Congratulations Lindsay! The way you hit the ball was beautiful, but the way you moved well thatís different. Whatís the problem?

LD: Yeah I donít know. I injured my I think shin this morning in practice and was feeling really well until about the last point of the 1st set tie-break and you know I just went for my shots there especially as it got worse, and I think that Justine had started missing a lot of balls but I mean Iím so lucky to get through. I donít know what to say, Iíve never had something like this and you know Iím really lucky to get through and I really hope it gets better in time for tomorrow.

INT: We all hope that obviously. When you were down 4-1 in the second set they said well if I know one person who can play on one leg extremely well thatís you because I mean nobody hits the ball better out there. Itís the right leg, do you think thatís somehow connected to your right knee, cause you had the injury there.

LD: Yeah, I really have no idea and the trainer was really great. I said what I can do and she said well try and finish the set and weíll see and Iím really happy I did. I think Iím really lucky. But I donít think so. Iím gonna see the doctor now and discuss it before the match but I hope not (laughter). I donít know until later.

INT: Well it happened to you once before in Munich that you won the semi-finals and could not play the finals.

LD: (laughter) Oh come on. No, I mean last time when I hurt my knee I couldnít even walk on it, so no Iíll definitely come out here tomorrow and give it my best shot and do everything I can. Iíll definitely take the court and come out here to play and I hope like I said I will get better in time for tomorrow.

INT: Well, weíll keep our fingers crossed and get better.

LD: Thank you.

Yeah, such a funny score. Again she was 6-0 2-0 down and made a comeback. She said she had trouble adjusting to the court and the opponents but when she figured out what to do she won easily. :)

Wow, she has a chance of winning her first WTA title! She won 4 ITF titles, but that's it.

Yeah, I've seen her play a few times. She's a lefty and apparently, her favorite shot is the volley. I'm not sure she's top 20 material though. We'll see. She played well againt Mauresmo in the QF until she hurt her back and then her level dropped. Still, it was a good match, so she has potential. :)

Mrs. B, I agree about Lindsay's fiancee. That's exactly what I was thinking (what a hottie that is). Well, I think it might be better if Baldy win his next tourney in St. Petersbury, bcos that not so much points that he will gain there, probably not enough for him to de-throne Lleyton, but the match count would be sufficient to tired his old man body out, then, maybe he'll pull out in Paris. :p Besides, that will prevent Novak from gaining too many points in St. Peters...

BTW, the outcome of tomorrow's final is gonna makes us all sick, no matter who win. So, let's focus on the bright side. It's either Novak got kept 4 points behind Juanqui, or Gagassi got his ass kick by the least possible suspect. Either way is a lot more appealing than thinking who would win. :D

And for Baldy, he himself knows that 3 TMS still not equal to 1 USO. No matter which way he counts, he is still behind Sampras by Slams count or hair count. :p :D

Well, Jiri will still gain points tomorrow because the finals points have not been added to his race score.

I'm going the same route as Layla on this one, just pretend it didn't happen and avoid all American news outlets like the plague for about two days. Luckily, whilst using Encarta today, I discovered this wonderful, wonderful internet radio station, Radio 101 (http://www.101.ru). It's the best free Russian internet radio station out there, or so they like to call themselves. They play American, British, and Russian music, news, and features. You don't even have to understand Russian to be amused by the Russian songs because some of them are quite funny.

So, happy thoughts once again--Juan Carlos & Michel are playing in Basel :) :) I can't wait to see the draw. I hope Richard qualifies!!

:fiery: AAARGH! This tournament has totally deteriorated into a farce. It's worse than you could have imagined--A-hole wins title without playing--Novak withdrew with a groin injury! He gets all the luck all the time, not fair!

On the bright side, this TMS becomes a "hollow victory" because AA didn't win it fair and square, didn't really earn it. Also, Juanqui stays in 4th place in the race cos Novak didn't win! :p

Hi TH and RogiFan! :wavey:

I've already moved on, Madrid is now in the past. It promised a lot and delivered very little. Still, I can't help but be happy that Juanqui reached the QF of an indoor TMS. :) Congrats darling.

Lindsay    I thought I only cried after Juanqui's matches, but I was in tears towards the end of that match. To be so close yet so far away from that elusive first title of the year was just heartbreaking. And she didn't play badly at all. Her injury probably hampered her a little, but it seems like this tournament was a meant-to-be for Schnyder, so congrats to her. :) Defeating Davenport in front of a home audience in such a tight match must have felt very special. Lindsay was such a good sport afterwards. She kissed her on both cheeks and didn't seem too miserable at all during her post-match interview. She said all you can do is come back next year and try again. She also said she feels she has a few more years in her. :) Title or no title, she should be proud of her fantastic come-back. It'll happen eventually. :)

TH, do you still have problems accessing this board? It seems to work for me. Hope it gets better for you soon. :) Not that I don't have tons of work to do still. ;)

I wish they would hurry up and release the draw for Basel!! I'm so curious about it. Richard Gasquet squeaked into the last round of qualifying, so it will be interesting to see if he gets to the main draw, and who he draws!

Layla, Lindsay is defending yet another title this week (wow, she was really on a roll this time last year, wasn't she?) in Linz, so maybe she'll have a better time of it. Kimmy is also defending her title in Luxembourg :) So good luck to both.

Credit to her she really hang on there, Lindsay had match point on the tie break in the second set. And Patty served well, played smart. Lindsay, not the best athlete around, could only look at some of the balls that went down the line. I think it's also good for her to win this title at home, she's been down and out and her story with that healer hasn't endeared her to the Swiss, she's still estranged from her father who has her money, but i think she's grown up, she's playing well again, she's found a new boyfriend who supports her and loves her and she's happy with her life at the moment.

Oh, I have nothing against Novak, since he is just boring.
And Agassi is not that bad either, but they playing each other is like nightmare.

And to think we could have some wonderful finals like
federer vs juanqui/grosjean
santoro vs grosjean/juanqui
srichaphan as well. :fiery:

Oh shitty week.
And Lindsay

Ya, but my feeling is that last year, his clay season was so good that it took a lot out of him. So the latter part of the season, he was a little inflated. This year is entirely the opposite. The the early part of the season didn't went so well. But things turned around so much lately...:D Lovely that would be, to see him and rogi in Shanghai.

Hi ILR, Hitman and Vera! :wavey:

Lol, I was reading another board, all those heated debated about whether Lindsay faked her injury or not and it made me a little irate (that's an understatement). Moving on.

Yeah I missed you ILR! :( But I wasn't here yesterday either. You really didn't miss much but complaining about Madrid. ;) Hopefully there won't be any need for complaining from now on.

Did you have a good time during the weekend?

dont mind me Mrs B, I cant stand her because I dont like the way she plays, and some problems with quotes from the past. And she just beat Lindsay, so...
I will forget about her existence tomorrow though ;)

Amen to that Hitman. Let's hope you're right. :)

TH, Lindsay won't defend her title in Linz, she withdrew from the tournament today on account of her injury. :( She said she hoped she's done enough to play the championship because she really wants to play in LA. But we still have Kimmy to cheer for. :)

I agree, I think he'll play well for the rest of the year. So he'll be in Shangai :D

I can't believe how many people here hate Jiri Novak! He has earned his spot in the race with his ultra consistent results. I find it hard to deny him what he's earned. But I guess that's just my opinion . . .

Aww :( I'm sorry.

Yay Kimmy! I just have to wonder how many more years she's going to play here. It is a Tier III, after all. I'm happy that she keeps going back, though :) Stay true to your tourneys, I guess.

Good luck, hitman. I hope the weekend doesn't turn into a horrible nightmare. Gooooo hitman's team (LOL, I *am* a clueless American)!!!!!!

Don't tell the Swiss but i was rooting for Lindsay too. Aww, she missed some shots by just a hair. And she was fair. Patty served an ace that was called out and Lindsay acknowledged that it was good by walking back to her chair...

In fact, I don't hate Jiri, until this tourney. Bcos he basically kick Moya out of Shanghai. Moya's now tied with Henman at #7. But he's not as good a carpet player as Henman, besides, his back is acting up. So his chance to Shanghai is quite shaky. I just feel bad for Carlos, cos he had a great year so far and he would be so disappointed for missing Shanghai.

I don't hate Novak. In fact, I quite like him, except when he's beating my faves. ;) I agree that he deserves his spot. He's just not the most exciting player on the tour, but who says he has to be. At least he's not annoying. ;) I think the animosity has come as a result of his rapid climb up the race at the finish. Many people are afraid for their faves (myself included :o ). After he won in Vienna (I think it was a semi-final match), he brought his little boy with him on court. He looked like him lol. But he was sulking and crying and didn't care if his daddy has just won a match and was about to give a delighted interview. :D

Oh, I'm afraid that he'll usurp a place in the Race, too, but at least he earned it (unless Costa schlepping in) and could make the Cup quite interesting (also unlike Costa, who sucks on indoor hardcourts).

Aww, that's so cute!! Players are so cute with their children. I love seeing Zhenya with his daughter. She also never looks too pleased to have her daddy giving interviews after his matches.

BTW, not everyone hate Jiri, but seems that everyone hate Costa? Why?

I think I'm the only one who would prefer Costa over Johansson in Shanghai. Despite the fact that he beat Juanqui in RG, I think he's a good player. And since he's a good friend of Juanqui, I just thought Juanqui will like the company in Shanghai.:)

ILR
10-20-2002, 08:37 PM

TennisHack
10-20-2002, 08:42 PM
No, most people would rather have Costa in Shanghai than Johansson, amazingly enough  I don't want Costa there because he'd be dead weight. Johansson would have a much better chance of at least winning a match against these guys than Costa, if for no other reason than the surface is better suited to him than Costa.

They say Johansson deserves the spot even less because he hasn't done anything since the Aussie Open. Well, duh, kinda hard to play when your arm, shoulder, knees are continually messed up!

Costa also just irritates me. The eyebrow thing! UGH!! LOL :o

Layla
10-20-2002, 08:47 PM
I don't mind Costa, apart from what he did to Juanqui. He was playing phenomenally well during the clay season, especially at RG. But I don't think he's a deserving candidate to be among top 8 players at the end of the year. And like TH said, he's useless indoors, as opposed to his Spanish friends. ;) I would much rather see Johansson there.

Oh and yay for Liverpool!!! :D

Layla

Vera
10-20-2002, 08:54 PM
So the round robin thing, is it seed odd seeds in one group and even seeds in another group?

Well, Costa is indeed useless on carpet, all the better to Juanqui's chance :D :D :D I thought Juanqui had a great chance if he didn't run into Hewitt in SF last year.

for Layla... :)

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (Ticker) -- Slovenian Maja Matevzic thumped Czech qualifier Iveta Benesova, 6-0, 6-1, on Sunday to win the $110,000 VUB Open indoor tennis event.

After dropping the first set of her semifinal against third seed and defending champion Rita Grande on Saturday, Matevzic wrapped up her first career WTA Tour title by losing just three games in her last four sets.

The 22-year-old Matevzic, who earned $16,000, has made great strides this season. She played in all four Grand Slam tournaments in one year for the first time and reached her first semifinal at the Porto Ladies Open in April. Two weeks ago, the lefthander appeared in her first career Tier I event quarterfinal in Moscow.

Matevzic later paired with Slovakian Henrieta Nagyova to defeat the third-seeded team of Nathalie Dechy of France and American Meilen Tu, 6-4, 6-0, for her first career doubles crown. It was the sixth time this year a player swept the singles and doubles titles at one event.

"Of course, I am very, very happy for those results today," she said. "Bratislava is my lucky city. I felt I was playing pretty well this week and I got my first WTA Tour titles. Two in one day, fantastic!"

Benesova was overwhelmed in the final but had the best week of her career. The 19-year-old Czech, who had never won two successive matches in a WTA Tour main draw event before this week, ousted eighth seed Laura Granville in the first round and the top seed, Dechy, in the semifinals.

"I am sorry for today," said Benesova, who was trying to become the third qualifier this year to win a singles title. "I tried to give my best but I could not find any weapons against Maja. She really surprised me with her good game.

"I am still very happy for this week, even if I'm disappointed about my game today. It is the end of the year -- I will have time to forget."

This was a Tier V event.

Is there someone out there who hates you?Well maybe there is someone upstairs who hates you?Or so it seems.Things just arent going well this week are they?It seems like there has been a storm brewing for ages within family over something that had nothing to do with you.The best thing to do is straighten things out, sooner rather than later. If things get really tough this week all you have to do is look on the bright side and think that there is always someone else worse off than you. This cloud hanging over your head will pass.Just give it time :)
