Well, I'm wondering if it's so that they don't suffer the same problem that has plagued other tournaments recently--getting through the first round. Because tomorrow second round matches start  Juanqui & Jarkko are the feature match on Central Court :D, and Michel is up first on Court 1 at noon (guess I'll know what happened to him when I wake up in the morning :() James, if he wins today (!!) is up against Safin.

Congrats to Guga too. Though he lost and that made Hitman sad. But Guga's back to his great form and that's good news. He'll be back to Top 10 in no time. Paul-Henri's 2 in a roll, way to go! And if there's any consolation to Hitman, Brazilian team won the Men Volleyball World Championship today. Brazil is now dominating the football and volleyball world, that's a lot to celebrate about.

Kiefer lost in Quali  to Jan-Mike:fiery: I hope JMG gets his ass kicked in the first round by Pavel.

Well, good luck to Alex in his first round against Vicente.
And good luck to Juanqui.

Oh yes, I watched the volleyball match and it was wonderful. So equal and nerve cracking. And the perfect finale with Giovane hitting that beautiful ace. The guys ruled. :D

You bet! I'll give you guys a detail report if my dream comes true tomorrow. I kept checking at my TV schedule and the order of play, I just can't believe my eyes:o It felt like a dream:D sweet dream:angel:

I've seen Jarkko before, didn't he win TMS Toronto??? Oh, errr, that happened in the musical :p But seriously though, I saw him in Cincy beating Lleyton in the first set, he was brilliant and made Lleyton looked helpless, in the first set. And I remembered saying Wow to myself. But he lost his concentration after the first set.

Anyway. I will be very objective in terms of their performance on the skill level. But I can't be too objective on who's better looking on court :o Hehe, better looking, I mean.... who has handsomer strokes and better serves...of course of course, what else can I mean:D , we are focusing only on the tennis, right! :o  :D Hey, TH, I can tell you who's hair is lighter!

Like I say, I'm getting overly excited now, I just hope I do get to see it on TV tomorrow.

10-14-2002, 10:27 PM
Hello again! :wavey:

I'm too exhausted to talk really, but I couldn't go to bed without dropping by.

Fabrice! :hearts: Blissfully happy that he made it past the first round and will meet Tommy next (what a match that could be). Thank you TH! :D I'm really grateful for that. My sore eyes will take comfort in it, as well as in the gorgeous pics of Juanqui in that Mercedes. :) Good to see Juan Carlos being the star of the tournament for a change. ;)

This biggest shock of the first day has too be James's early exit! I still can't believe it. He was up 4-1 in the first set, crusing along. I wonder what happened because suddenly it was 4-4 and then he lost the set and got broken twice in the second one.

I'm sad for Max, especilly because he will lose all those points. But that can mean only one thing, that Tommy has made it past his first hurdle. :) I hope Novak will be tired and he can go a step further. A Moya-Robredo 3rd round match would be quite a treat. But Moya needs to defeat Gonzalez first. :( I have a feeling that Gonzalez will choke though. I hope I'm right.

TH, I just remembered something. Tomorrow morning I will get to see 1 hour of highlights on DSF, a German sports channel that always covers the masters (but only highlights). I wonder who they will show, but I'm pretty sure one of them will be Schüttler, so I might get to see a bit of Jarkko. :) Hmm, no wonder three Germans are among my faves. I get to see them a lot. ;)

Vera, I believe it's your turn to be lucky with the coverage. :D I'll keep my fingers crossed and will eagerly await your report. Lol at handsome strokes. Of course that's what you meant. ;)

Hitman, thanks. I HAAAAAAAATE MY WORK!!!! :fiery: But it's coming along. Around 10 more days of torture and I should be ok again, but only provided I don't accept any more texts, should they come my way. I think I'll tell everyone I'm taking a vacation. I can't take it anymore. :(

Ok, going to bed now. Tomorrow we'll get to cheer for our beloved Juan Carlos again (except for TH, who will be secretly rooting for Jarkko ;) Just to make Juanqui jealous. :p ). :)

Night night! :wavey:

Oooooooooooh highlights!! I'd kill for any piece of info you have at this point. Imagine my excitement when I found two pictures from today!! Vera, his hair is darker than I remembered it, but maybe that's because of the lighting or something :o

Ok, going to bed now. Tomorrow we'll get to cheer for our beloved Juan Carlos again (except for TH, who will be secretly rooting for Jarkko ;) Just to make Juanqui jealous. :p ). :)

Oh :o I indeed will be cheering for Jarkko, but only because he's going to need it!! He's playing the featured match on center court against one of the darlings of Spanish tennis! He's going to need all the help he can get!!

The only difference is, I won't be upset if he's defeated ;) Because I admire his constitution to stay in matches :)

Right, I've seen the highlights. The two featured matches Mirnyi vs. Robredo :) and Rios vs. Gaudio

Sorry TH, I only saw 3 points of Jarkko's match but he seemed very impressive. :) He was moving really well and hit some sweet volleys.

As for Mirnyi, he seemed a bit sluggish but maybe that was just because he was playing against one of the fastest guys on the tour. ;) I really love the way Robredo moves. :) So lighty and with such speed. And he excels at hitting the ball on the move. I was also impressed by his actions at the net. And his backhand down the line was really working miracles. I didn't exactly paint the lines but it got the job done. A beautiful shot to watch.

Hehe, they showed Juanqui watching Robredo's match. ;) He really is quite bond, but it suits him. :) They also showed a bit of Juanqui and Andy getting into the car, but they concentrated mostly on the car. :p If I understood them correctly, Juanqui's match will be one of the featred matches on tomorrow's highlight! :D That would make me very happy indeed, but I find it a bit strange. DSF (the channel) is famous for ignoring Ferrero. They haven't exactly endeared themselves to me so far.

I see. Well, what did you expect lol. :D Btw, I'm upset about that too. England was my #1 team for the World Cup and Spain was #2, so you can imagine how I felt. Gutted. That was one horrible World Cup. :p

Ugh, apparently Michel *was* an omen for the day. I hope Juanqui doesn't fall under the same spell :(

LOL, I was thinking about Guga-Paradorn, my tennis watching friend and I were on opposite sides of the match--he wanted Paradorn to win and I was rooting for Guga. I'm sure he'll be quite happy with the result, even though he likes Guga, too.

I should only be gone for an hour of the match, and with Juan Carlos and Jarkko, I don't think that'll be the grand majority of the match. I think they'll play for a good long time.

:) Hi Layla!

Come on Carlos!! Those Sudamericanos are very tough!

Yeah, we're getting minimal coverage of Madrid -- should be on in about 45 mins. They better show Juanqui!!! And he has to win at home. [thought it was cute that Robredo said he likes playing in Madrid and he feels "comodo", comfortable, because he gets to eat Spanish food!!] Juanqui probably feels the same way! Did he look cute in the vintage Merc? He's looking particularly "mature" and cool in his leather jacket, don't you think?

Hi ILR! How are you?

Vera

Hi everyone! :wavey:

Just a quick hello before Juanqui's match starts. I think I'm more nervous than excited. There's no sure win game, isn't it? And today's result so far sucks. I hate Jan-Mike :fiery: Oh, but though, Nico did get thru. Now Carlos, Seb and Juanqui, pls get thru.
I can only watch about 30 mins then I have to tape the rest. :fiery: I might not be watching but my heart will surely be in the match. Please do well Juanqui. I'll give you guys the report when I got a chance to watch the tape. By then, you may have severals report posted since quite a lot of us can watch the match, yeah! We can compare notes:D

Layla, cheer up, Juanqui will do his best for you (and us).
Hi RogiFan, long time no see, how's holiday?
TH, sorry that Michel lost and Jarkko will lose (well, that's my prediction). But their lost have or will make us all happy here so it's worth it. :)

Ferrero serves 6-3 0-1

0-15 Error Ferrero
0-30 Jarkko moving pretty well, Ferrero forced to a long forehand as he swings late
15-30 Very beautiful forehand winner cross-court Ferrero
15-40 What a shame... Nieminen went for the winner down the line, the ball slipped in the tape and went in. Juanqui started running like crazy, and had a winner counter-dropshot... But the ball had bounced twice in his court
Double break point Nieminen
30-40 Juanqui saves the first
40-40 Big serve, huge forehand down the line for another winner
Pretty high level of play
ad-40 wow, what a comeback. Jarkko with some very deep backhands, which Ferrero is handling pretty well. He forces Nieminen to hit into the net
Game Ferrero 1-1

Ferrero serves

15-0 Nieminen had problems with the backhand as the ball was very high, albeit in the middle of the court
15-15 Nieminen taking control of the point, Ferrero late on the backhand down the line motion
30-15 Chipped return, Jarkko forcing the game to Juanqui´s backhand (smartass :p) but he goes long
40-15 Perfect forehand down the line on the run for a winner Juanqui

He should then use the kick, but put the serve deeper, next to the lines.

I agree, he tends to fall into a very easy serving pattern that is more suitable to clay. He'll learn, though, how to mix it up better as he gets used to playing on these higher levels of competition :) Plus he will probably refine the motion he has right now.

15-0 Jarkko chip and charge, Ferrero puts the fh to his toes
15-15 Error Ferrero
30-15 Long forehand Nieminen
30-30 Very good serve Ferrero, as he throws Nieminen out of the court, but then he missed an easy volley as he tried to hit a drop
40-30 ACE
Jarkko doesnt like the call. And he is right. The ball was wide

OH MY GOD!!

I just rushed through the scoring probably as fast as it was happening.

Jarkko had 20 break points?! Wow!! Good for him, that says something about his return of serve :)

If Juanqui had blown him out in straights I would have cried. Seriously, when he served for the match the first time in the second set I was prepared to mourn Jarkko's choke and whatnot. But WOW!!

The walk from class to my dorm was agonzing because I thought, "Juanqui probably won the tiebreak right when I left " I was not expecting this!

Congrats to both players for a great match. It gave Layla hives (and made me nervous), but it was exactly the kind of match I like watching. Now you guys know for sure why I adore Jarkko--footfaults notwithstanding  He never gives up in a match! And his flashes of brilliance are becoming a little more routine :)

And Juan Carlos really held it together. It looked like he got angry at the beginning of the third set, but he used it well, forced Jarkko to play at the top of his game and still managed to get a good starting battle out of him. That long game was the decider, you know there always is one.

I can't say I'm disappointed in either player's play today. Jarkko got out of his choke (unlike his match against Hewitt at Cincy) and fought til the end, Juanqui learned his game and realized that this kid wasn't giving up.

I'd love to see them on clay, now.;)

I also can't wait to hear hitman's expert analysis of the boys' play since he actually saw them and I'm just going on memory and his urgent posts through the match.

Congrats on a great match to Juanqui & Jarkko! :bounce::bounce::bounce:

I was just really grumpy today. My mom made me go to lunch with a bunch of aunties, I was bored out of my mind for the whole 2 hours I was there, not to mention worry sick of Juanqui's match. Thank God he won, along with all my other faves, Moya, Nico and Seb. Poor Guga lost to Paradorn, that's a very tough draw.
