It's like battle of the fathers as to who gets your sympathy, tho! Mikhail vs Tommy . . . that's a tough one. I'm glad Tommy is doing well, and hope that this doesn't make Misha decline.

:bounce: That's SO GREAT that Tommy's father is doing better! I'm sure they are all very happy at the progress he's made :) Maybe he will inspire Tommy to finish the great year he started ;)

hackie, it was something like 7-5, 6-2 for Daniela. she beat Barbara Schett, who just took out Chanda Rubin the 1st round.

Capriati Runs Out of Gas At Porsche

Top seed Jennifer Capriati was stunned 7-6 4-6 6-4 by qualifier Alexandra Stevenson in the second round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Wednesday.
It was Stevenson's second win over Capriati this year, following an earlier victory in Sydney in January.

Playing for the first time since losing to Amelie Mauresmo in the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open, world number three Capriati failed to come to terms with her fellow American's strong forehand and backhand.

Although Stevenson hit 13 double-faults, she also hit eight aces and was solid enough both from the baseline and when working her way to the net to have Capriati struggling.

There was only one stage in which the former world number one was able to dominate. That came early in the second set as Stevenson experienced several problems with her serve.

Breaking to lead 1-0, Capriati was able to build a 4-1 lead, but even then she struggled to close out the set as Stevenson settled again.

In the final set, Capriati broke to lead 1-0, but Stevenson leveled at 2-2 and broke again to lead 4-2. Although she failed to serve out the match at 5-3 some aggressive returns forced Capriati into errors and a netted backhand ended the two hour 11 minute battle

I'm very envious of you guys getting so much coverage of tennis this week. I look forward to next week, which I will be getting 2 hours from Tue thru Sun. I really really hope that they show the players that I like in that precious 2 hours. Preferably player with a last name of Ferrero, but not to be greedy, any Spanish, French, Russian, German player or Guga will do. Cross my fingers. Though, I realized that TSN, the Canadian station actually have more coverage than ESPN, which is really strange. Because they usually just rebroadcast what ESPN has. So maybe there's hope that our rebroadcast will be from other stations, preferably European, especially the one with that 2 commentators who has nothing bad to say about JC... Well. I can only hope. Looking at the European coverage on the TMS website, very long coverage...

I think we might have a chance of seeing Zhenya and Safin, since they are good indoor players will probably last longer in the tournament. Well, I just hope the Spaniards will do well at home to be worthy of ESPN to show any of them. But then, Spaniards playing at home... that's bad memory for the Americans, so maybe they don't want to be reminded.

Juanqui will kick ass in Madrid, how could he not at home? And hopefully Agassi will pull out when he gets intimidated by the schedule and only James will have any sort of luck!!

GOOOOO JUANQUI!!!

yes, have to agree. i know ESPN will show any Andre match they can get! PMAC is obsessed with Agassi!lol! anyway, i do hope James will do well next week. just not too well. ;)

I don't know how well James will do, he hasn't had much luck in the Masters so far this year :( And this is his first year playing the indoor season as well, so we'll see :)

He's playing Davydenko, so yeah, he has a chance. :( I can't believe Koubek didn't win after almost 3 hours of playing. :( And for the record, the Eurosport commentators kept praising the quality of the match even during Haas' match (whom they adore). I don't believe they were talking crap, they just don't do that. They tell it like it is and if the match is no good they say that in no uncertain terms even if it's one of their favorite players or one of the big shots. I just wanted to state that cause people are making fun of me for enjoying the match between two such unlikely players as Koubek and Stepanek. I'm glad my commentators were on my side. ;)

Juanqui, Timmy, Alex, Lleyton, Sebastien, Di Pasquale.

I just decided to push Greg out of top 6. It's a spur of the moment decision. :p But he will hover in the neighbourhood, along with Santoro, Johansson, Haas, Moya, Ivanisevic, Robredo, Schalken, Schüttler, Kiefer, Blake, Kratochvil, Olivier Rochus, Safin, Mirnyi, Koubek, Ancic, Gasquet and others I must have forgotten. :)

Okay, I must share these lines with my fellow romantic souls out there:

"He presses my hand against his heart
and sighs from the depths of his soul
without a word too free--and thus the night goes by
hand in hand, me always in his eye."

:sigh: :)

But I don't mind if you guys trash him. ;) I can easily understand how you might hate him.

He praises Juanqui! :D I like him already.

Well, in fact, I like him, because he's a true fighter. And I was never annoyed by his aggressiveness on court. Off the court, some people just don't like publicity. Of course the media wants to take every opportunity to attack him for that.

It's weird to call him Nico. But I like all those Nico out there, Nico Lapentti, Kiefer, Escude... to name a few.

Anyway, I think Kiwi trys very hard, but for some reasons, his game hasn't improve much. It's almost like he try too hard and got stuck. Anyway, I still believe he can be a better player than he is right now.

Thanks, Leo!

btw,. you were asking about Alexandra & Cappy's match yesterday. Well, i did see some of it esp. the 2nd and 3rd set. Alex played really well especially from the baseline, she was hitting strongly on both sides although her serve wasn't on. She hit some beautiful backhand shots down the line and she moved Cappy corner to corner. JC also hit some unforced errors on her FH to the net.

Layla

Ok, I'm watching Kafelnikov-Escude and taping the others, cause it started first. The first set goes Escude in a tie-break. :(

The first few games were all about Escude. He was on fire, mainly serve-and-volleying and hitting superb returns on Kafelnikov serve. Kafelnikov got broken at 2-1 but then immediately broke back.

At 3-4 Zhenya's service game he led 40-0 only to double fault twice in a row and after a great bh down the line by Nico it was deuce. Zhenya managed to save the game though with some serve and volleying of his own, even though he mainly stayed in the back for most of the set.

5-6 Escude double faulted to go 0-30. Zhenya hit a brilliant passing shot on the run for 15-40 and two break points. He gets the break with another fantastic bh down the line, laser sharp

6-6 Zhenya played a poor game serving for the set. :( A great return by Nico sealed the game.

In the tie-break, Kafelnikov threw the raquet on the floor in frustration at 3-2 for Nico and got booed and a worning. He hit one very clever lob, but Escude's brilliant return (taking the ball very early) gives him a mini-break. He takes the set with a brilliant play at the net. Fantastically quick reaction.

In the first set, Nicolas seemed like the dominant player I must admit.

Hi, Layla!:wavey:

You stayed up pretty late last night! But you guys seemed to have a nice chat...:)

I played tennis this morning but it was really nippy cuz we played outdoors and the sun wasn't out yet. Oh well, it was still fun, nevertheless. I love every opportunity when i can play...

Oh yeah, about tonight, i probably will be back a bit late, but i know you guys will have fun cheering for Juanqui. I'll send out some good vibes for him...But he'll make it, no worries...;)

Are you working a lot?

Mrs. B
10-10-2002, 11:58 AM
Yeheyyyy!!!!

Kimmy won over Majoli, 6-1, 6-2. :)

Let's see how Martina will fare against Dementieva...

Layla
10-10-2002, 12:03 PM
2nd set:

Kafelnikov serves first and holds, then immediately breaks to go 2-0 up. Escude's first serve totally let him down in that game.

Good game by Kafelnikov, he leads 3-0.

Nicolas holds, still trouble with first serves, but ends with an ace. 3-1

great volley by Kafelnikov. It's good to see him come to the net for a change. Great serving in this game. 2 aces. But also 2 netted fhs. Phenomenal bh down the line by Escude. Deuce. Great second serve for adv. but a huge return takes it back to deuce. Good aggressive play by Zhenya and another adv. Yet another amazing return for duece. Commentator: "Oh stop it!" lol. Ace for another adv. Kafelnikov. Double fault and he swears. Another ace for adv. LMAO at this game. Poor response to Escude's return, it's long. Back to deuce. Amazing shooting by Escude but in the end he goes for too much and nets a fh. Adv. Kafelnikov. Finally a great first serve sealed the game. :) Sorry to ramble on but it seemed like a pivotal game.
4-1

Escude holds to love, serve and volleying again. 4-2

Poor game by Zhenya, he seems to have lost concentration again. Two bad points followed by a double fault. Nico's bh down the line earns him the break to love.
4-3

Escude continues to serve and volley on every point, though he can make mistakes at the net as well. Great serving helps him to hold.
4-4

An all-important game now. double fault at 15-15, he almost throws the raquet but restrains himself. Huge second serve saves him 30-30. Another huge second serve. 40-30. Big fh by Escude. Deuce. Escude hitting huge forehands, Yevgeny nets the reply. Adv. Escude. Service winner. Deuce. Ooops, missed this point. Adv. Kafelnikov. Net cord helps Escude. Deuce. Double fault. Adv. Escude. Great return, Kafelnikov tries to get to the ball but nets the fh. Escude breaks.
4-5

This isn't looking good for Kafelnikov. Fight Zhenya!

Commentator says that Escude desrves to be in front as he's been the braver of the two. I have to agree. Like I said, he is the dominant force out there. It's good to see him back in his stride.

Serving for the match. An ace and a service winner for 30-0. æ-Another ace for 40-0. 3 match points!!! What do you know. He wins it with an ACE!!!

GAME, SET AND MATCH NICOLAS ESCUDE!

I'm really sorry TH. :(

But congrats to Nicolas for a great come-back. :)

Layla
10-10-2002, 01:10 PM
Hello TH! :wavey:

Zhenya didn't play badly, Nicolas was just too good. But one match doesn't ruin the day. ;) You'll see when Janqui wins, everything will be alright. :)

You thoroughly deserved a day of blissful happiness yesterday, so there's nothing to pay for. :)

Layla
10-10-2002, 03:51 PM
Ok, I guess you were right TH. This is not a good day. Thomas Johansson retired with a knee injury (I don't know the details).   His string of injuries just won't stop. I feel so sorry for him. What a dreadful development after the glorious beginning of the year. :(

There's not much to say about Kimmy's match. She was pretty incredible. :) I guess Majoli just couldn't get a hold of her amazing serve. Kimmy broke her immediately and the only game Majoli won in the 1st set, she won it on pure luck as the net cord derailed the ball into the court. Kimmy was on fire, very authoritative. If she plays like that against Lindsay she will probably win. Lindsay seems to be struggling with her serve for some reason. :(

Meanwhile, Haas is in real trouble. He lost the 1st set 6-4 on a double fault and was struggling in every service game. I don't like the direction this tournament is going. :( Juan Carlos better come through for us. ;)

I don't think Escude is brilliant on clay. He went out in the first round of RG and wasn't injured at the time. Coming back from an injury is always weird. You can be amazing one day and totally crap the next. I wouldn't worry about Davis Cup just yet. Besides, Zhenya will be a whole different animal in Davis Cup. :D

Bjorkman defeated Mad Max 6-3 6-4  :fiery: He was also in my team, along with Schüttler. :( It's a good thing I didn't pick Haas, he will lose a lot of points as the defending champion. Or will he? I'm a bit confused about that right now.

Hola, everyone!

Well, hasn't been a good day so far. Haas lost    he didn't add any point to the Race, he's still behind Costa :fiery:
C'mon Tommy.

And Zhenya, he's gonna fall off Top 10 in the ESR, I think. I just hope that he finishs his career at Top 10. But he will have to be exceptionally for the rest of the season. Or maybe he won't retire.*Cross fingers*. But I wasn't entirely devastated, if there's any consolation, at least he lost to Escude. Nico on clay, not entirely convincing, but I will like him to be on the DC team (maybe bcos I want Russian to win in DC:o )

JC and Seb are the hopes of the day. Pls, they have to win! Vamos JC and Allez Seb!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
