Ferrero Survives, Nalbandian Falls
Finalists at Roland Garros, Wimbledon have opposite fates in first round matches.

It was a split decision for this year's Roland Garros and Wimbledon runners-up in Vienna on Tuesday, as Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero defeated Nicolas Massu of Chile, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, while David Nalbandian of Argentina was upset by Russian lucky loser Nikolay Davydenko, 6-3, 6-2. Ferrero, the second seed who fell to countryman Albert Costa in the final at Roland Garros, picked up his second title of the year two weeks ago in Hong Kong, and is looking for his first career tournament win indoors. No. 8 seed Nalbandian, beaten by Lleyton Hewitt in the Wimbledon final, has now lost five straight matches, while Davydenko is hoping to use his win at the Challenger event at Szczecin last month as a springboard to success on the ATP circuit.

Fifth seed Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic opened in impressive fashion, defeating Alberto Martin of Spain, 6-2, 6-4. While Novak has yet to reach a final this year, he has been one of the circuit's most consistent performers, reaching six semifinals (Auckland, Australian Open, Dubai, TMS Roma, Stuttgart, TMS Toronto) and winning 45 matches.

Other players picking up first-round wins included Germans Nicolas Kiefer (d. Xavier Malisse, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1) and Rainer Schuettler (d. Dominik Hrbaty, 6-4, 6-3), as well as Austrian wildcard Jürgen Melzer, who delighted local fans by toppling Argentina's Mariano Zabaleta in a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3) thriller.

What the Players Said

Ferrero: "I knew it would be tough and that I would have to play well to beat him. He is very solid from the baseline. I lost to him 7-6 in the third in Indian Wells last time we played. I came back strong in the second set and I think I played great tennis in the third."

Schuettler: "The first set was tough, we both had our chances. At 5-4 I made the break and won the set. I played very solid in the second set going 4-0 up. Generally I served well, I think that was the key to the match."

Melzer: "Maybe I didn't play my best tennis today, I made some errors you're not really allowed to do. But winning matches when you're not playing at your best makes you really happy. I'm proud of myself that I fought back from being a break down twice in the third set. And when it counted, in the tie-break, I played my best tennis."

WEDNESDAY PREVIEW
In Vienna on Wednesday, first-round action wraps up and second-round play gets underway. Top seed and defending champion Tommy Haas of Germany takes on Mikhail Youzhny in his opening match. Haas, still searching for his first title of 2002, hopes that he has better luck against the young Russian than in their only previous meeting, this year in the Munich quarterfinals, when he was forced to retire before his home fans with a back injury.

No. 6 seed Roger Federer of Switzerland meets qualifier Zeljko Krajan of Croatia for the first time in opening round play. Federer had a sizzling first half of 2002, winning two events (Sydney, TMS Hamburg) and reaching two additional finals (Milan, TMS Miami), which helped him peak at No. 2 in the Champions Race in late May. Krajan had a career-best showing before his home fans in Umag this year, reaching the semifinals (l. to Ferrer).

In a first-round all-American clash, James Blake meets Vincent Spadea for the fifth time, having split their first four meetings. Blake has had a breakthrough year on the ATP circuit, reaching the final at Memphis and Newport and capturing his first title at Washington, DC, while Spadea is coming off his best showing of the year last week at Tokyo, where he reached the semifinals (l. to M. Norman).

Two second-round matches are also on the Wednesday schedule. Fourth-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain meets Argentina's Agustin Calleri, whom he defeated in Bastad en route to one of his four titles of the year. No. 5 seed Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic faces another Argentine, qualifier Guillermo Coria.

Yes, I think it'd be reasonable for him to drop to #12 after only playing 1 event during the summer hardcourt swing. But he won't be there for long, I assure you ;)

LOL, I figured I could take liberties with the commentary since ESPN doesn't actually cover Palermo. What do you think about Jim, though? Is it believeable that he'd get on PMac's nerves like that?

If I wanted to pick style over substance, I wouldnt like Davey, Seles and Daniilidou so much. LOL at "Werthless".

I think you have some valid points; of course we were just teasing you before ;) Anna was a devestating juniors player, right up there with Martina Hingis, but she has never been able to translate it to the women's tour. It's a shame, really :( but I think she made her choices knowing full well the consequences. I'm angry that she used her tennis as a mere springboard into modelling, but also because she's squandered her talent (though she is an amazing doubs player with Marti).

I'm just at the point now where I am starting to believe Anna winning a singles title on the WTA tour will throw the world forever out of balance. Of course, I thought this about Sampras as well, but he's disappeared from the tennis-playing map this year so he did me a favor :D

Just thought I should drop by and tell you. Hey, hitman, I'm really only Joking here. Sorry if I offended you. Really don't mean to.

Anna does have a good game. But she hasn't put her heart into it lately, IMO. But she's still a good player. And I mean it. Hey, my all time fave is Gaby, and I'm indeed like her bcos she's just really graciously beautiful. I think it's okay to like someone just because he or she is beautiful. I like Pat before he became a great tennis player, because he's just so darn good looking....

It was only a game, a reason to talk about a poet. Just read those lyrics... :D Perfect! I found a website with his lyrics

Look at this other one:

Lately I've been running on faith
What else can a poor boy do?
But my world will be right
When love comes over you

Lately I've been talking in my sleep
I can't imagine what I'd have to say
Except my world will be right
When love comes back your way

I've always been
One to take each and every day
Seems like by now
I'd find a love who cares just for me

Then we'd go running on faith
All of our dreams would come true
And our world will be right
When love comes over me and you

Chorus

Then we'd go running on faith
All of our dreams would come true
And our world will be right
When love comes over me and you
When love comes over you

What a dream I had
Pressed in organdy
Clothed in crinoline
Of smoky burgundy
Softer than the rain

I wandered empty streets
Down past the shop displays
I heard cathedral bells
Tripping down the alleyways
As I walked on

And when you ran to me
Your cheeks flushed with the night
We walked on frosted fields
Of juniper and lamplight
I held your hand

And when I woke
And felt you warm and near
I kissed your honey hair
With my grateful tears
Oh I love you girl
Oh I love you

:sigh: Why can't people sing songs like this anymore? :(

Morning! :wavey:

Look what I can do! http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/gizm0/Juggling_Emoticon.gif

I'm watching Roger's match :), so I can't really chat but I just wanted to say  @ the conversation last night. It took me a while to read it. We're almost at 300 pages now.

Oooops, Roger just got broken so I'll come back later and discuss it.

HI, LAYLA!!!! :)

Where do you get to see Roger's match? I can't find it on tv! They're showing the girls' matches though, on DSF.

Ok, details, please....

Morning, everyone! :wavey:

What good news to wake up to: Rogi AND Max both won their matches in straight sets today! :) I had a peek at the scoring threads, are they long already!!

Indeed, even in my 40-posts-per-page setting we managed to take up 12 pages, where we usually are doing good if we take up two. There was something magical about the evening, I guess :sigh:, :swoon: ;)

Hi Mrs. B! :wavey:

They cover the Vienna tournament on an obscure Austrian channel called TW 1, which I only receive until the evening when the cable company replaces it with a stupid local channel. So I can't see any evening matches. But it's great that I get such great coverage.

Details? There's not much to say, really. Zeljko Krajan played very well in the first set and Roger had to fight for every point. He seemed pretty solid, even though he made mistakes from time to time. From the time when he got broken at a crucial point in the first set he was in total control of the match and Zeljko started making more mistakes. Roger showed flashes of brilliance but I've seen him play better. He did seem confident though and that's what's important. His mind was in the match. :)

Anyway, you'll get to see it in the replay. ;) So you can judge for yourself.

Ooops, Blake's match has already started. GO JAMES!!! :bounce:

Morning TH! :wavey:

A magical evening yes. ;) I really enjoyed your conversation last night. LoL I feel like a voyeur. ;) It had more (melo)drama and yet another fight for the same guy. :p As much as I like Hitman (which is a lot :D ), I decided not to get involved in the fight. I want someone who will be just mine. ;)

I'm a bit surprised that Hitman managed to ignore the fact that two beautiful, intelligent women were fighting over him. Come on Hitman, seize the opportunity! CARPE DIEM! ;) We need more romance in here.

Oh and you had some beautiful music here yesterday. :) TH, I didn't know you never heard Layla before or I would've insisted you dig it up somewhere. ;) And you gotta hear the original 70s version. The unplugged is mellow and therefore an altogether different song. The original has passion, urgency, love, obsession, desperation, all of it erupting in a wailing explosion of guitars and pleading voices. It's too good for words. I always felt that if someone sang me a song like that I wouldn't be able to resist either. ;)

Layla
by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon

What'll you do when you get lonely
And nobody's waiting by your side?
You've been running and hiding much too long.
You know it's just your foolish pride.

Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.

I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down.
Like a fool, I fell in love with you,
Turned my whole world upside down.

Chorus

Let's make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane.
Please don't say we'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain.

Chorus

Hi, luv!:wavey:

Boring match on tv right now, Koubek-Stepanek..., but i saw Alexandra Stevenson kick Capriati's bum. ;)

Where's Hackie? Well, i didn't see Krati but i had a small talk with his Dad who was smoking a cigarette watching the players on court. He said that Krati's back and that he takes his loss well although he said it was a pity that he was leading 5-1 in the third set. We also talked about his 4 match points against Timmy in Wimby. The Dad was there then and i asked him if he was nervous but he just shrugged and said that's tennis. Somebody talked to him so he excused himself and when he came back i was sitting on one of the tables drinking my espresso and i didn't want to be too imposing but i sensed that he wanted to talk some more...
Maybe on another occasion...;) Now that it's indoor season again, i'll be there frequently.

If you happen to see your crush walking down the street, dont approach. This week is a bad time for pouring out your emotions.Believe me the best thing you can do is steer well clear of hampering your crushes life with your feelings and problems. They will not be attracted to someone who bellows out their insides to them straight away.If you need to talk to anyone, confide in a close friend or a family member.Get to know the person first before you make your move, but only after this week. After all they are strangers and werent you ever told not to talk to strangers?

Fortunately the first text is not that difficult. :) As for the second one, I'll wait until tomorrow. I e-mailed them when I could do it but I won't start until I get their affirmative answer. Last week they screwed me over (this a new client) because I started on the text and then 2 dasy later they sent me an e-mail that my services were no longer required because they found somene who could do it quicker. Well kudos for them! I was working on 3 things at the same time so I'm sorry but I can't jump when they say go. I was so mad at them. :fiery: I've lost a day's work on them. I'm not gonna let that happen again. Sorry for ranting but I'm really not satisfied with this client. They send the most crappy texts imaginable.

Right, back to work. :p

Haas is blowing it big time now. After winning the first set 6-2, he's now giving the second one away. He lost all of the intensity. Wake up Tommy!!!

If it feels like you are being watched at work this week,it is probably because you are.By someone that you least expect.Put it this way,it will be a suprise! But if its someone that you dont feel attracted to or you dont feel you could make things work, then dont be too harsh, because just remember how they feel.Because surely you must have been infatuated by someone before. And if it turns out to be a nice suprise, dont be too suprised, why wouldnt the office hunk be interested in you? ;)

Thank you dear. :) You really are a great friend. :D How can I ever repay you?

This match is too painful to watch. What the hell is going on with Tommy? Mikhail leads 4-1 in the third. He broke Tommy twice. :(

Seems like your positive energy worked wonders. :D He got both breaks back and now leads 6-5 :) What a strange match! Misha had him in his clutches. He had an easy put-away volley to gain the first match point, but instead he put it into the net! What a heart-breaker that must have been.

GO TOMMY!!!

TOMMY WON!!!!! http://www.smilies.org/basesmilies/blob_red.gif http://www.smilies.org/basesmilies/blob_red.gif http://www.smilies.org/basesmilies/blob_red.gif

Congrats!

I can't believe he won after all that. After he lost the second set 2-6 and was down 1-4 and two breaks, to come back and win the match is just astonishing! Poor Misha! :( What a heart-breaking match for him. Those two missed volleys at crucial points will haunt him forever.

But yay for Tommy! :) And his father stood up after the match, which means he's not in a wheelchair anymore. :)

It was difficult who to root for, but my heart went out to Misha because of his Dad and i wanted him to do so well, and yet again i was happy to see that Tommy's Dad was around and supporting him...
