Well, i saw the replay of Mathieu & Schalken's match. I must say that Paul-Henri was really firing away, esp. the 3rd set. Even had a couple of lucky shots that hit the net then went to the other side. His first ATP title. :)

What happened?!?! The end of the week was a complete disaster!! Zhenya & Marat lost in Moscow, then Paradorn in Tokyo! And today--Sjeng gets BAGELED and Lindsay loses by the skin of her teeth in a tiebreak? I hope this weirdness doesn't continue into next week!

I posted a pic of Paul-Henri with his trophy in the Moscow thread, but it was very weird. Poor Zhenya :sad:

Poor me!! My team sucked this week. WHY oh WHY didn't I choose Paul-Henri?!?!?!?! :(

Hey, Mrs. B! :wavey: I'll stop commiserating now, I feel pathetic :o

And here I was hoping, that hitman would at least be happy about a tennis scoreline before he had to go sit all day and work at his elections. :( Poor him.

UGH!! I need to stop!! LOL ;)

:wavey: TH and Mrs. B! :)

Yes, this was definitely a weird week. Sjeng losing was the final straw for me. But I must say Paul-Henri was on fire. What a terrific performance. Schalken wasn't playing bad at all, even in the set where he was bagelled. Paul-Henri just blew me away today. There is such urgency, power and audacity in his play, it's unbelievable. I'm pretty certain he will go on to achieve great things. Everything was on his side today. That break-point at 3-0 to go up 4-0 was just unbelievable. The ball bounced off the net twice, finally ending up in Sjeng's court. Sjeng was almost laughing at that point. He knew there was nothing he could do to turn this torrent around. But he did put up quite a fight. At first I though he got injured when I saw the score, but no. Paul-Henri was simply out of this world today.

Fortunately, I did pick him for my team, but it was a last minute decision cause one of the guys I wanted to pick went out in the first round. Guess I was lucky as well. ;)

Mrs. B
10-06-2002, 05:43 PM
Well, he's the first Frenchman to qualify and win this title in Moscow, so good for him. But you're right, this "urgency" about him, even when he went to his bench during changeover he had to run to get there! he was really pumped up. I'm sure he'll kick more ass in the future. Poor Sjeng, eh? He's cool as a cucumber but once he really threw his racket on the floor 'cuz he got so pissed off with himself for hitting that ball just out of the line...lol

Layla
10-06-2002, 05:56 PM
Do you really think it was out? I thought it was in and he was just as angry at the call as he was at himself for putting it so close to the line. But you're right, you rarely see Sjeng throwing his racket on the floor. ;) I thought he took this collusion with a runaway train rather well though.

He's one of the few guys on the circuit who really seems to be a gentleman on the court, and even after he shook Paul Henri's hand at the net, he even put his hand on Mathieu's chest, or heart, so it was a sweet, sportsmanlike gesture on his part... :)

The prospect of next week isn't all too bright either. :( Not only will I have a truck load of work to do, especially if I want to watch the Vienna tourney every day :( but Kimmy and Lindsay, my two main faves, are drawn in the same quarter in Germany and might meet in the quarter. :(

3-2 for Eagle/Stolle in the 2nd set. Did u know that Max paired with Stolle last year to win the doubles title in Moscow?

Layla, if Kim and Lindsay do meet in the quarters in Germany, and if Lindsay plays like she did today, Kim will prevail...

I almost cried there, but the other displays were great.

You could be right Mrs. B! But there's no reason why Lindsay would play that way again. She's been pretty amazing since she came back to the tour. She didn't play that badly today, certainly much better than yestrday. I don't think she was disinterested today or that she didn't care if she wins or loses. She struggled vailantly against her less-than-perfect form, as was most evident when she was down a break. Yes the end of the match was heart-breaking but I thought it was a rather good match all in all. Maleeva played incredibly well, especially when returning. Sadly Lindsay's returns were a bit suspect.

But nothing she can't work on until Germany. Sometimes it happens that you just don't feel right at a certain tournament. Everything seems to be off and there's nothing you can do about it. It's not an indication of what she will show next week. And she did make the final after all, that's not a mediocre result.

And Kimmy has been known to falter as well, so the result of that match, should it come to pass, is far from certain. It could go either way.

All I know is that I'll be completely torn. Kimmy is my #1 fave, but I'd like to see Lindsay finally win a tourney this year, preferably beating Capriati in the final lol. ;)

Yes, the Rock Hall is in Cleveland. One of my friends is from there, so she sort of gave us the tour of the town. It's a very nice, clean city, I was a bit surprised. The Rock Hall is perched over Lake Erie, so the weather was nice, even if the lake smelled bad :o (The lake is really polluted and even caught fire back in the 60s.) It is *the* Hall of Fame, too, so it's really cool to see rock stars' real clothing and items and stuff. Yoko Ono even used to call to chat with visitors.

David Bowie has an amazing sense of fashion. Just . . . amazing. It almost made up for not seeing the S&G exhibit (they were inducted in the first or second year, I think).

BTW, where did you see the ladies' draw this week? I can't find it.

It's a really cool place, like a huge glass pyramid :D

You have to be nominated, and you are only eligible 25 years after your first record comes out. Has it been that long for him? They have inducted some strange people into the hall, but I'm sure he'll make it eventually. To be inducted the first year you are eligible is quite amazing. The Beatles weren't even inducted on their first year of eligibility!

There is this special wall dedicated to the fan-voted top ten singles of all time, and of course I thought of you when I saw "Layla" by Eric Clapton. But I thought you didn't like that song? I would have taken a picture of it, but they don't allow cameras in the exhibits :(

Layla
10-06-2002, 07:47 PM
Oh I see, that's quite strict. Tom Waits' first album Closing Time came out in 1973 so yes, he's eligible. But he must not be popular enough to be inducted. :(

Not like the song? Layla is one of my all time favorite songs. :D There was a time when I was quite obssessed with Eric Clapton. (I say obssessed but of course I don't really mean it) I even went to see his concert in Munich when I was in high school. It was a bus trip and worth every penny I had to spend on it.

Well, Eric Clapton has been inducted twice, first with Cream and then by himself :) I'm not a big fan of his myself, but I definitely respect what the man has done to music.

Hi Guys!

I'm so happy! Talking about a blast from the past! I got 2 phone calls tonight, one from the Philippines, and one from Australia. This girl from Down Under i have not heard for like over 20 years! It was so great to hear her voice and reminisce about the past...:)

Sjeng pulled out?  How come there are only 5 singles matches scheduled for tomorrow? I don't like that at all. :( The weather in this part of Europe is too unpredictable these days.

Well, it's been working all weekend. The bad news is, the cable company is supposed to come back tomorrow and replace my new modem with the old one and I don't want that to happen now that everything is finally working. I'm still not sure what was the cause of the problem. It might have been the excess drivers he deleted, but it might also have been the modem itself. The old one was buzzing very loudly all the time (intermittently) even when the computer was switched off, while the new one is as quiet as a mouse. Like I said, I desperately don't want the old one back. If it starts causing problems again that will only mean more hassle and waiting for the cable guy to come back and fix it again. I can't afford to lose any more time, I have way too much work to do next week.

Oh, yeah. Damn, there went my argument :( Well, let's keep thinking positively :)

I hope everyone you like does well, too, especially Juan Carlos :D I think the only other player that I like who has a chance here is James Blake. Jarkko has Tommy Robredo AND Rogi to contend with, while James gets Vince Spadea and Taylor Dent.

The guys are definitely looking better than the girls right now. The Filderstadt draw isn't looking too great at the moment. The last time Kim played Myskina, she lost. Daniela is playing Bedanova, who she's defeated, but I suppose anything could happen. I suppose I should just be happy that neither of the Williams sisters is playing, but I want more than that, dammit! :D

Well, you never know until you apply. I guess it would be a highly competitive offer to just put out into the market, but you seem like you would be very qualified for a position at the embassy.

Thanks. :D The diversity visa gives 50,000 applicants an opportunity to basically emigrate to the States. But every year, they get a humonguous number of applications from all over the world, but divided into continents. The applicants are selected randomly by a computer, hence the name lottery visa. ;) My chances are miniscule, but they exist. 50,000 people get lucky every year, so why not me? :p

If you get selected, you can obtain a resident visa and a work permit, so you can effectively remain in the USA indefinitely and eventually apply for citizenship. A golden ticket to a new life. ;)

WOW!! That's amazing, I had no idea my government did that. I guess they aren't all bad :D That sounds so amazing . . . I'm just speechless. Maybe you could come to Cleveland and I could visit you next time I go to the Hall of Fame :D

Btw, I think Kimmy will defeat Myskina. :) I just can't imagine her going out in the first round, so it's not going to happen. ;)

I have a lot of players I like in Vienna, so chances are I'll get to see some of them play. :) Unless Tokyo happens all over again, but that's practically impossible. Things can't go this terribly wrong two weeks in a row.

Maybe you're right about Kimmy. I hope so, and of course I'll be cheering for her no matter what!! :)

Hmm, perhaps Tokyo was just the aberration between titles for Juanqui :D I agree, no matter what happens, things cannot be as weird as they were this past week. It just can't happen . . . right?

Ooops, that would really be amazing. But it would also be over 2% of the population of Slovenia. It's a very small country. New York City alone has 4 times the population of Slovenia. :o

But yes, this is an incredible thing. I think the USA is the only country that offers something like that. It's called diversity visa for a reason. The aim is to diversify the population and certain countries are not eligible to participate, which is decided every year. Basically, if a country has sent over 50,000 immigrants to the States in the last 5 years, it cannot participate, to make it fair for the other countries as well. Diversity is the name of the game. ;)

However, I don't know when this was started and which government was responsible for bringing it to life. All I know is that I am eternally grateful for this opportunity. In an ideal world, anyone could live and work anywhere in the world, but sadly it doesn't work that way.

I will most definitely have to look into that, because it sounds, well, amazing :o. Especially since so many people have been complaining about the overpopulation of the US lately . . .

No, no, I can start in on another installment, at least get them to Italy because it's been rather dragging. I want to try my hand at the commentators again, though PMac & C.Dri haven't ever done commentary for Palermo . . . keep in mind I haven't seen them since TMS Cincy so I might be a little rough to start out with. Speaking of translations, yes they are evil. :fiery: Even more so when the original is crap and everyone expects you to make it brilliant. I just started a new one. Hope it won't be too difficult. It's certainly not short.

So Michel is playing right now? What's the score, I can't get any scores from court B on live scoreboard.

Vera, I wouldn't write any young players off, or old players for that matter. ;) It's normal to experience slumps from time to time. Good luck to you Layla. Hope you can get what you want.
Just out of curiousity. I heard that Europeans can move around in Europe, that a European passport will allow you to live in other country within Europe, is that true? Have you thought about moving to another country besides the States?

Layla
10-07-2002, 09:50 PM
It's true for the countries in the European Union and Slovenia isn't part of that. It will probably join the EU in 2004, but there's talk that they will restrict the movements of work force between new members and the EU countries for several years, which really isn't fair. In the event that the Slovenes will be allowed to live and work anywhere in Europe, I will move to Great Britain immediately. ;)

I could also move to Canada, but it's even harder to obtain a work permit than in the USA, and there's no lottery visa available.

Vera
10-07-2002, 10:09 PM
I see. And I would think that you like GB very much too.

Canada is not as desirable in terms of getting work as compare to US, I was considering looking for a job in the States too. Just that I like to live in Canada too much to move. But I think Canada has a more open immigration policy and allow ppl to apply as long as they meet some criteria. I'm not sure what the criteria is now but I'm sure that they give high mark to French speaking ability. But it would be good if you win the lottery draw. In fact, I have a friend who moved to the States recently, getting drawn as one of those lucky winner.

I don't hate Costa. I don't think he beat Juanqui, he was lucky that Juanqui gave him the match. Though it does make me think if Juanqui would have play a better match if he wasn't playing against Costa. Anyway, we'll never know.

Ya, I don't believe in that WC thing to the TMC. IMO, one don't deserve to be in there if he's not in the Top 8, especially when they won a Slam and still not in Top 8. But that's the rule. So I don't want Costa to occupy the Top 7 spot since he's going to get the WC. Tommy just miss that last year (though I was extremely happy that Seb was the one who took that last spot). So I hope Tommy gets in this year, if not him, Rogi would also be good.

Shit! Johansson defeated Santoro 5-7 7-6 6-2! :( Now he has to find his form.

Fabrice! Not happy about this result at all. What's going on with Fabrice? He's in a slump as well. I know he was injured during Wimbledon, but that was a long time ago. :( He can't even win in front of the French audience.

too bad for Fabrice. he did well in Cincy this year making the Quarters, losing to Haas, but he hasn't done that well of late. :( i think he has a great game.

hopefully Juanqui will play his first round match tomorrow.

what does the weather schedule look like for this week?

Layla
10-07-2002, 11:21 PM
It seems ok until Thursday. Partly cloudy. Later in the week there's a chance of rain, which is why I don't like the 3-day first round. We've had a lot of rain in this part of Europe in the past few months.

Well, seems like I'm not the only one who's had better news this Monday than the last. This just in from Timmy: :)

I can report much better news this week as my shoulder is very much on the mend. Since starting my second course of anti-inflammatories I've felt no impingement in my shoulder at all and I've been able to really get stuck into my re-hab exercises over the past few days. I'm due back on court on Tuesday and I'll obviously have to ease into my hitting but I feel very good about my chances of competing in Madrid next week.

He should have won this match fairly comfortably, though. Ulihrach is useless indoors, and Michel grew up on indoor courts :(

Hmm, surprise me, eh? Only if he shows up and demands I take down my proclamation that I will one day marry Juanqui from my door. Heehee, I can see him jealous :D

I am shocked and saddened , but I am still loyal to him. He just draws me in like that ;)

Great news indeed. Timmy needs to come play the last 3 tourneys to maintain his position in the Race. I want to see him in Shanghai.

Well, I don't dislike him. Indeed, I was pretty impressed that he didn't get nervous in the final (like Clement in the previous year). But I still think that Johansson and Costa won not because they played brilliantly, just the other two played horribly. So that made their wins less impressive since both finals fell into the category of someone choked (hmmm, sadly, that's the truth). Of course, a win is a win no matter what the circumstance is so they deserve to have their trophy sitting in their living room, and that's what counted. But no matter how ppl said they like to see the underdog wins, it's still disappointing to see someone like Marat and JC lost in a big one. So it would have been better if Costa and Johansson didn't win that big one.

i like Thomas. i was cheering for him in Australia this year against Marat. i think he is a great guy and is very modest. but i don't feel that he is deserving of the Masters Cup b/c of that one win. basically he's done shit since AO. i know he's injured and all, so i do feel bad for him. i hope he can come back and do well at next year's AO when he is defending champ.

btw, i would rather Johnasson be in Shanghai than Albert, but it's not gonna happen. :(

And a German sports channel will be covering some of the matches from Filderstadt, from 1 pm to 6 pm. :D This almost makes up for the fact that I won't be able to see any Masters, apart from the Masters Cup.

Look, I found Arnaud Clement. http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/Jason/bandana.gif LOL!

Oh no, you're quite wrong about that. I like Thomas a lot. In fact, he was one of my top faves for a while, but they're on rotation and he sort of fell out during his non-existent post-Australian Open year. :(

I guess I never talked about it here before, because it happened in the beginning of the year, but I thoroughly enjoyed that AO final. I was rooting for Thomas even though I like Safin too. I was quite impressed that he'd gotten so far. That final had everything, great tennis, drama, some choking by Marat, nerves of steel by Thomas. It was a thrilling match.

Marat didn't choke that badly, certainly not as badly as JC did. He began to choke halfway through the match when Thomas' coolness and great strokes began to break his spirit. Thomas deserved to win.

As did Costa, even though I hate to admit it. I disagree Vera, I saw Costa play all his matches and he was absolutely unbelievable. He could've blown anyone away in that tournament. He was aggressive, resourceful and executed his shots with laser-sharp precision. Enough to wear anyone down, even Alex who previously seemed determined to win.

But to get back to Thomas, I don't dislike him. I was just a little angry that he accomplished nothing after AO and then in the one match he won in the recent months, he took out my darling Fabrice, whom I adore. That's why I swore. But I'm actually quite happy he finally managed to win a match. Now I hope he can do it againt players who are not my faves. ;)

And I too would prefer to see Thomas in Shanghai instead of Costa, but it's quite impossible. :( Damn, so many off my faves got injured this year. Timmy is still hurting and Greg is out for the year. Not to mention Juanqui's problems, Tommy, Fabrice, Thomas, Seb, etc.

By the way, thanks to everyone for responding to my inquiry about Thomas. I just see so many people resenting him for "taking" the Aussie Open from Marat this year, and it's plain to me that anyone who watched that match knows Thomas deserved it. It was one of those destiny runs :)

I, too, am unhappy that he was unable to defend his titles this year, but wasn't he injured almost from the start? After he came down from his high of the Australian, he started having problems with multiple parts of his body :( All of this injuries this year are

Hello again! :wavey:

That just sucks ILR! :( I hope the books not too damaged.

TH, Kimmy won today and I got to see her match. :D Way to go Kimmy! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: She defeated Myskina 6-4 6-2. She had 2 matchpoints to bagel her! She seemed very confident and powerful. She just dismissed Myskina's second serve. Sure, she made some mistakes too, but Myskina couldn't cope with her powerful shots. ;)

GO KIMMY!!!

As for men, I saw part of Nalbandian's match. He lost to Davydenko 3-6 2-6, pretty badly actually. He kept making terrible mistakes and seemed generally unconfortable and unhappy on the court.

For David's fans I should add that during a break, when Nikolay was treated for a blister (I think), David sat on his chair shirtless. ;) His chest is quite hairy.

Unfortunately, I'm waiting for the channel to be cut off any minute now. :( Too bad, this could be an interesting match! And Juanqui's match will follow that one so it probably won't start before 9 pm.

Well, Jim is actually a very good commentator. He does Wimbly & the US Open for TNT & USA, respectively. He's very quiet, but at least he knows what the hell he's talking about, and he's not biased to the Americans. Plus, he thought Jarkko Nieminen would have a breakout US Open this year  even though he didn't.

He's also the gossip mill of the men's tour, it seems.

He & PMac probably get along really well in reality, but I thought he'd piss him off if they invited him to the booth. I was toying with the idea of having Jim for the entire week because I like the dynamic between them. And Cliff, ever the mediator  :D

I don't think they show court B, only the Center Court, so that's impossible anyway. But it hasn't been cut off yet and I can still enjoy a bit of Kiwi. :) I said before that I don't like Xavier, so I hope he gets spanked again, but unfortunately, he's just broken Kiefer and leads 3-2. Even though Nicolas started playing way better. :(

LOL, I'm on page 265 already. :D

I have mixed feelings about him. Sometimes I like him and sometimes I don't. I've seen him play a few times on Austrian TV and he can be good, but is inconsistent. I don't understand the commentaries though, so I can't give you any info.

I can tell you that Moby is absolutely adorable though. :hearts: I wouldn't mind marrying him myself. :p

Hi Vera! :wavey:

No, I'm not watching anymore. You wouldn't believe when I got cut off. At the end of the 1st set, it was 5-4 for Malisse and he was serving for the set, but then it was 30-40 and Kiefer had a break point to save the set. That's when the channels switched. :fiery: Perfect timing. I can now enjoy a local channel that shows absolutely nothing, except some stupid info and photos of Slovenia.

I felt he would turn the match around. Xavier seemed quite uncomfortable on the court and kept getting angry with himself.
