HONG KONG -- Juan Carlos Ferrero dropped a set, but picked up a title.

Ferrero held off third seed Carlos Moya, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), Sunday in the all-Spanish final of the $400,000 Salem Open.

Seeded second, Ferrero was hoping to win his first title without losing a set, but settled for his second tournament victory of the season. He won the Tennis Masters Series event at Monte Carlo in May.

The 22-year-old Spaniard captured his seventh career crown -- second on hard courts. Ferrero, who takes home $51,500, appeared in his first Grand Slam final at the French Open and was runner-up at the Generali Open at Kitzbuhel in July.

Ferrero improved to 6-2 lifetime against Moya, winning his third title at the expense of his compatriot.

I mean, something happened to my program, it shut down, and I lost all of my hard work. No, I never saved any of it because I kept changing words and whatnot, so I can't get it back. :fiery::mad::sad:

I might have time to redo it tonight, but that really pisses me off. At any rate, I finally updated my website. I've been getting a lot of hits since I passed 1,000 :)

This will help:

Ferrero Downs Moya, Seizes Salem Open
Win could prove pivotal in battle for Masters Cup.

In an all-Spanish duel that had significant implications in the battle to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup, Juan Carlos Ferrero defeated Carlos Moya, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(4) to win the Salem Open in Hong Kong on Sunday.

The second-seeded Ferrero--who has now defeated Moya in six of eight career meetings--captured his seventh career title and second on hard courts (2001 Dubai). He won his only other title of 2002 at the Tennis Masters Monte Carlo, defeating Moya in the final, and also reached the final at Roland Garros, where he lost to another Spaniard, Albert Costa.

Despite his loss, No. 3 seed Moya is enjoying one of the best years of his career. Rebounding from a back injury that hampered him in 1999 and 2000, he has won four titles in 2002 (Acapulco, Bastad, Umag, TMS Cincinnati) - tied for the ATP lead with Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt.

Sunday's final result is especially important because it breaks a three-way tie between Ferrero, Moya, and Costa for fifth place in the ATP Champions Race. Ferrero now surges into fourth place in the Race ahead of Tim Henman, while Moya slips to sixth and Costa to seventh. Ferrero's win in Hong Kong boosts his prospects of returning to China in November for the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai. The top seven players in the Champions Race automatically qualify for the Masters Cup, with the eighth spot going to the highest-ranked Grand Slam champion between No. 8 and No. 20 in the Race.

What the Players Said:

Ferrero: "I'm really happy to win here in Hong Kong. I reached the quarters last year, and this year is my year. I'll miss Hong Kong - the city is very spectacular."

About the Spaniards' success on hardcourts: "It is great to win again on a hard court. The people in Spain think that we can only play on clay. But Carlos and I played the final on cement. I want to tell people in Spain that we can play well on other surfaces.

About the importance of his win for the Champions Race and the rest of the season: "It was very important to win here. I'm leaving with a lot of confidence on hard courts. [Much of] the rest of the season is on hard. If I win here, why not another event indoors?"

[i]About Moya's 6-1 second-set win: "The first game was the key. It was a long game. I had a lot of chances to win it, but I didn't. My serve let me down a bit, I didn't get many first serves in and he played very solid. He served well the entire match, I had problems to handling his serve."

"In the third set, I tried to stay positive. This was a tournament final, I had to fight a lot, and I did it."

About his ambitions for the future: "My goal for next year is to win a Grand Slam. I'm working to be No. 1 in the world, and I'm very close. I have three guys in front of me. I'll keep working in the same way."

Moya: "I'm proud of the way I played. When you give everything, there's not much more you can do. I'm proud of my serve. I didn't expect to play this well when came here. I had tough opening matches (vs. Gambill, Arthurs) against hardcourt players, and I beat them, so I'm playing very well."

About the third-set turning point: "In the third set, I was up 40-0 and hit some stupid shots to lose serve. My momentum was going away. In a third-set tie-break, anything can happen. We both deserved to win, but there can only be one winner. Today was his day."

About his chances to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup: "If I don't make Shanghai, at least I know I've been playing good tennis again. That's the most important thing. I don't have to get desperate if I don't get to the Masters Cup. I've enjoyed playing this year, and I won't have any regrets. I've proved that I can play well on hard courts."

About the tournament's move to Beijing next year: "I would have loved to have been the last winner here."

I have bad news (for me anyway).

First of all, I got another text to translate today, and it's quite long too. I've been saying how I despretly need a break for a while now, because I'm really, really exhausted. Well, looks like it's not going to happen for another 2 weeks at least. :fiery:  I swear to God I will collapse one of these days.

The other news is much worse. There seems to be something seriously wrong with my internet explorer. It keeps crashing my computer within 10 minutes after being opened. It started this morning when I checked out the Moscow site and launched thier real-time scoreboard and webcams. I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but now it crashes regardless of what I open.

So until I figure out what's wrong I probably won't be around anymore.

I really have no idea what to do. I don't know anything about computers really. Does anyone have any advice? I can't work like this. I don't remember how many times I had to hit the reset button today. :fiery:

I really hope I can solve this problem but at the moment I'm not too optimistic. :(

Sorry to hear that, Layla. Hope your computer get well soon. It happened to me once, when I replaced and upgraded my computer last year. The Explorer kept crashing so I went back to the shop, but it didn't crash there. So the guy said maybe the new components are more sensitive to the current fluctuation and asked me to get a better surge bar. I did and it did get better. Though, if you haven't make any changes to your setting, then this shouldn't be the source of the problem. Anyway, hope your friend can help you.

BTW, I just checked the website of next tourney, Vienna. Shocked to find that JC got a wildcard to enter the tournament there. Shock because it means he will be playing 6 tournaments in a roll, just like Moya... And very curious to what happened to Haas. He didn't play Moscow and based on that article in GM, sounds like he's not playing Vienna either. Nothing mention on the website so does anyone know?

Hi, Becca! :wavey:

Good to know you did well on your midterm. I think I did okay on mine as well. Thank God for extra credit :o

 at the map. Sure, we used maps in intro Russian to identify all of the countries and whatnot, but she never quizzed us on it. Seems like a waste of space and a bit of busywork.

I guess you'd love to see something like that coming if you were really good at geography and had a photographic memory.

I'm sad because the other half of the musical team can't be around today, and that sucks :( Of course, with the overload the server is dealing with thanks to the WTAers, we might not be able to get on anyway. Although I heard the WTA board is back up, there are still over 100 people here.

I see. Didn't know that cos I'm just focusing on the Race. Seems though he got the wildcard at the beginning of Sept. So maybe he wanted to enter more hard court tourney to get more points for the Race, afterall, his best 5 hasn't been great before HK.

Ya, very tough to fill Layla's sure indeed because she knows everything there to talk about. Okay, maybe I'll just ask questions and start up some conversation. So I saw City by the Sea last weekend. It's a story set in Long Beach. First, I didn't know Long Beach is in NY and second, I didn't know that it looks like a dump. Am I confusing it with Long Island? I thought it's a upscale place?

BTW, hi to IRL and everyone here!:wavey:

Perhaps Leo is better to ask, but I thought Long Island was more dump than upscale. I don't know about Long Beach.

I've never even heard of that movie :o

He didn't play Moscow and based on that article in GM, sounds like he's not playing Vienna either. Nothing mention on the website so does anyone know?

I think its great he got a wild card.

He hasn't played in nearly a month before this, so him playing a few in a row won't hurt him.

YAY :D

I guess you'd love to see something like that coming if you were really good at geography and had a photographic memory.

The irony is I used to be like this. I read atlases for kicks when I was younger, and knew capitals and stuff no problem.

Had I not seen it and panicked i might have been able to draw from memory a bit.

I also used to be good at maps and countries, but I could never pronounce the capitals :o Now the only lingering aspect of my younger years is this passion for flags. My favorites are the Nordic flags--Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark. This is funny because they are all the same design just different colors :o:o

Not only that she got tickets from JC's coach to the final, she also got a HUG from JC after he won! That's makes me want to go to watch him live so very badly. I wonder if she knows him in person or sth but it seems though she's just a fan, a very special loyal fan I suppose. She said he is extremely nice!!! Don't we all know :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

Hmmm, this place is so quiet without Layla. Layla, we need you here.

Well, rain is stopping play in Tokyo. The wed schedule is just packed that it makes me dizzy having to scan thru it. And JC is not playing tomorrow. So seems like for 2 weeks in a roll, he will have to win 2 matches in one day. There's only 3 2nd round matches scheduled on wed, and Moya, Hewitt and Nico are the lucky one. But maybe they can play super fast so the organizer can get more 2nd round in later tomorrow...

Hi guys! :wavey:

I just dropped by for a few minutes. My computer is in the shop now and I have no idea when I'm getting it back, or even if they'll be able to make it work again. But I'm hoping for the best.

Let me vent a little first, so if you don't want me to depress you, you can skip this part. :p You know the saying it never rains but it pours? Well it's pissing fire and brimstone on me right now. There's just no end to bad news. Apparently, on Monday when my beloved computer went down, the library that I go to almost every day (I'm an avid reader and I love libraries) was destroyed. It was flooded during the weekend when some asshole left the pipe open in the construction site next to it. Everything was destroyed, all the books I loved so much, all the CDs I had yet to rent, the computers, everything.

I'm really devastated by all this. I feel like all my connections with the world are being yanked away from me. The books and the internet just mean so much to me. :(

Also, my best friend is moving to Scotland in two weeks and I have so much work I won't be able to spend much time with her before she leaves my life forever. And my other friend's young dog has a dreadful disease and she might die. I also found this out on Black Monday. Ok, I'll stop now, otherwise I'm gonna start crying again.

Didn't mean to depress you. :o I just needed to get this off my chest.

Layla
10-01-2002, 07:45 PM
I can't tell you how much I miss you guys. Lol @ your comments about me. You're doing just fine without me so please carry on. :p

If I don't get my computer back soon, please cheer for Juanqui instead of me and I'll do it at home. On a brighter note, I'm quite happy that he decided to play in Vienna. :) True, I'm a bit worried like Leo, but I might get to see that tourney on the Austrian TV and seeing him again would be fantastic. :D

I'm really sorry Michel lost, TH! I really wanted him to win. :( And Max is out too. :( But I'm happy Schüttler won. :bounce: Robredo seems to be in a real slump though. Kafelnikov is right on track though. I'm quite keen on seeing Marat and Yevgeny in the final. :) That would be fantastic. I think they will show the final on Eurosport so it better be good. :p

That's about it I guess. Oh, btw I'm using my friend's computer just in case you were wondering. ;) But I can't stay long cause she doesn't have unlimited access to the internet like me. :(

Take care and please have fun. Just ignore my previous post. :p

Love you. :wavey:

ATP to launch new television show

The men's tennis tour has teamed up with an international sports marketing company to produce a worldwide tennis magazine television programme, the ATP said on Monday.

ATP Properties, the commercial arm of the ATP, and Sportsbrand Media Group have reached a three-year agreement to produce and distribute the show which will be called 'ATP Tennis'.

The 26-minute weekly show, beginning in January 2003, will cover highlights from ATP tournament action as well as off-court features and interviews.

"We are extremely pleased to be partnering with the ATP for what will be an exciting and entertaining look at men's tennis. I am glad to find an opportunity to expand our involvement with tennis," said Jeff Chapman, founder of Sportsbrand and tournament director of the Dubai Duty Free-Dubai Open.

"Tennis is one of a select group of sports that reach premium audiences on a truly global basis. We are pleased to once again be able to provide that audience with a top of the line weekly magazine show," said Larry Scott, President of ATP Properties.

Scott added that the ATP had already secured the first programme sponsor, Mercedes-Benz.

The German automobile manufacturer is also a major sponsor of the ATP tour.

"Having produced and distributed the TV coverage for the million-dollar Dubai Tennis Open for many years we have the experience and tennis knowledge to produce 'ATP Tennis'," said Anil Nair, Executive Chairman of Sportsbrand.

"The show is unique and will be highly valued by broadcasters, targeting key demographics and will also give brands a great opportunity to associate themselves with a premium product."

The ATP produced its own TV Magazine show from 1990 through 2001.

Sportsbrand Media Group, with offices in Melbourne, London, Dubai and Auckland, also has long-term marketing contracts with the New Zealand Rugby Union and owns management contracts for the Dubai Tennis Open and Dubai Rugby Sevens.

Yay, Jarkko won in Moscow!! :bounce::bounce::bounce: He next faces Rogi. Why do I get the feeling I'll be the only one cheering for my Finn? :o ;)

(1R) J. Nieminen d. M. Rios 7-6, 3-6, 7-6

I tried to go to the website to watch the last set of this but I couldn't get there. I guess it's a popular place.

Hmm, now that the men's matches are over suddenly it's free season over there. Here are the match stats for Jarkko:

Nieminen--Rios

Aces (1 & 2 serve) 3--17
Double Faults 6--8
1st Serve % 53%--55%
1st Serve Pts Won 43/59=72%--57/81=70%
2nd Serve Pts Won 26/52=50%--28/64=43%

Break Pts Won 3/17=17%--4/7=57%

Net Approaches 6/13=46%--13/20=65%

Total Points Won 129--127
Unforced Errors 46--83

Match Pts Held 6--0

Not the cleanest match, by far, and Jarkko needs to tighten up his game if he wants to do well against Rogi, who completely slaughtered his opponent today  His serve was good, and his return was okay, he just needs to capitalize on those break point chances and work on closing out the match.

But all in all, not bad for a 21-year-old rookie!

Hi everyone. Quiet morning!

Tokyo's results' been awful and Juanqui haven't even play a single point yet. I hope the spaniards' lost will inspire him to play even better. And so far so good in Moscow, except that Youzhny lost, (but too bad for Becca that David lost and too bad for TH that Michel lost). Then tomorrow, all my fave are playing against each other in Moscow:mad: Now that Pete is not in the run, I hope Rogi will do really well and get into the top 7 (and that means he will have to beat Jarkko tomorrow so sorry to TH if he did win)...

My China friend emailed me yesterday. She said she saw that HK interview of JC. That when the reporters told him that he was elected as one of the sexiest man (in tennis) in that gay magazine, his straight face turned into laughter (so he did laugh it off). He said he didn't mind such poll but was surprised by the result. And he said he's absolutely not gay. And in the poll, rank 1 is Safin (so I wonder if the reporters asked him too), and Roddick is second, JC ranked third. Okay, that's all. I thought I ought to share it with you guys though I felt uncomfortable to have to bring this topic up again.

Hey, Vera & Leo :wavey::wavey:

Vera, I know, I'm very anxious about this matchup between Jarkko & Rogi. Rogi absolutely slaughtered his opponent (what else can you say about a 6-0, 6-1 result?) but I think it's safe to say Jarkko will win more than one game off him ;)

It's okay if no one wants to cheer with me for Jarkko over Rogi, I'm not going to disown you suddenly or something. Any other player and I'd be rooting for Rogi myself.

I am not surprised Misha fell apart. I honestly don't think he's ever going to be the same, especially if his father really was killed the way Nina said he was. That's something you just don't get over easily, or quickly. He's young (19, right?) so perhaps his career isn't a total shamble, but I think it will stunt him.

Mm, I hope Juan Carlos doesn't fall under the curse in Japan. He's playing Magnus Norman, who is ranked in the 200's at the moment. I also hope James does well! He's going to play Martin Verkerk. Go James & Juan Carlos! It feels so strange to say they haven't played a match yet and it's Wednesday!

Anyway, don't worry about bringing up the gay magazine poll, especially since you know what happened. I'm quite reassured by Juanqui's reaction, that's what I assumed happened and I'm glad he was able to laugh it off. And, if he was third in the poll, why did they have the headline so misleading?

I'm now using my auntie's computer, so I can't stay long. I posted the match report I promised you. I wrote it on another computer. Hope you enjoy it. :)

I knew TH would be very excited about Jarkko's victory. :D Congrats on beating Rios like that! :bounce: But you're right, we'll be rooting for Rogi tomorrow. ;)

Looks like I'm not the only one having bad luck this week. :( I should probably post this on the Hill as well, but maybe some of you will be interested too. Poor Timmy. This is from his official newletter which arrived, when else, on MONDAY! :fiery:

The bad news this week is that my shoulder injury has flared up again and as a result I've been forced to pull out of the Vienna event next week. I felt no impingement at all during the Davis Cup tie but last Wednesday I awoke with a lot of pain so I went back for another MRI scan. However, the good news is that there are no new injury worries, just a recurrence of the old problem. I have some bruising of the bone, which the specialist thinks has been caused by a posture problem, and I have some inflammation that is causing the impingement so I'm back on the anti-inflammatory tablets, which will hopefully help ease the situation. Once I feel no pain in my shoulder I can get back to my re-hab work, which was working so well up until the Davis Cup tie, and then hopefully I can start hitting some balls again some time next week. The specialist feels that I have a good chance of being able to compete in Madrid the week after Vienna, which is vital given that it's a Masters Series event. Until then, it's a case of being patient and staying positive.

I don't know why but I've been feeling extremely gloomy this week. Maybe it's the weather, or a let down since the excitment last week.

Anyway, for what happened to Misha. I just felt very bad for him, any time one lost a parent, regardless of the circumstance, is horrible. I hope he doesn't get too down on himself. Seeing that his match when to 3 sets, I do felt a little better that he's not giving up. I hope he bounced back from this low.

Seeing Juanqui won last week is great, not only because he won, but because I do feel that he's bounced back. He looks like he's in a mission. So now, I'm hoping the other will slap themselves out of their slumps, like Rogi, Marat, Nico and Kiefer (both been slumping for at least a year so I'm not sure if they are still capable of doing well).

Hmmm, I guess the only way to cheer myself up is to have some cheesecake with a latte. Yum yum. Bye guys.

Good luck with the computer, Layla. Too bad you´re having troubles.
I see you could send me your team, though. Thats good :)

Hi TH, Rebecca, Leo, Scott, Vera, IluvRogi, and everyone else I might have forgotten. :wavey:

I had a long drive on Monday to collect some material for a paper I had to write.
I scanned tons of pictures and drawings and articles on Tuesday, so I could start the paper this afternoon.
I wrote the FULL paper in one afternoon and one night. Its pretty good now, I guess. I concluded it with over 50 pages.
I hope at least I get a decent evaluation of it. :p

I have a tough test tomorrow, so I have to go to bed in a few to rest so I can study in the morning. Im waiting for the dead line of the teams for the game. ;)

Next week we will have some great week, with meetings, videos, project marathon (we get a project to make in 24 hours non-stop, in groups of 5 people. The first prize is something like 300 dollars in books), and some very good pros will go there to talk to us about architecture. Im an architecture student, btw. :p

Well, one more little effort and I will be free for the weekend. :D

Bye bye everybody! :wavey:

Good luck on your test tomorrow, just don't think about Juan Carlos's latest result (please oh please oh please don't let him jinx my team this week :o).

Ooh, architecture :hearts: Sounds fascinating. Lots of fun with all of the projects you are doing!

no dynamic reading. I know that talk. You mean when you read the books reading comics with your radio on and watching old tennis matches while you eat. NO!
History professors are too correct for that to work. This guy who is gonna read my paper knows EVERYTHING that there is around about this subject. You say a books name and he knows what the author was wearing in the day he wrote it. :p

Anyway, I didnt read a lot, but I drived for 6 hours, took 40 pictures, scanned them and other 100 slides, made an interview, wrote about 20 pages of written material, to go along the images and stuff. Also, it has attached some drawings.

And thanks for the good luck. I can use all the luck you guys have to give me. :p :wavey:

Now Im finished posting the stuff about the game, time to bed.
Good night! :)

I come bearing news from Layla. She is still internet-less :( because the company that handles her cable modem connection did not go out to see her today like they said they would  She said if they don't come tomorrow, she will just take her computer back to the shop. Unfortunately, she wouldn't get it back until Monday, so we may be facing the possibility of a weekend without her.:eek:

Believe it or not, she is *not* upset at Juan Carlos's loss, because he had such a fantastic week last week. And she's very excited that Maja Matezvic is in the quarters in Moscow as a lucky loser!

Morning everyone! http://www.smilies-world.de/Smilies/Smilies_klein_1/coffeecup.gif :wavey:

I am now completely and utterly baffled and clueless. My computer has miraculously started working today and it's been fine since this morning, which means for several hours. The cable company guy was supposed to come and replace my modem to see if a different one will work, but now he can't do it if it refuses to freeze. Figures that it would work just when an expert is supposed to come check it out.

I'm not getting excited by this, because nothing's been done to remove the problem and I'm just waiting for it to freeze again suddenly. I've been relieved before, only to have my hopes crushed like a bug, so I can't believe everything's fine now. Maybe if it keeps forking for a few days I will begin to relax. :) We'll see what happens. I'll keep my fingers crossed. But it's all so bizarre and confusing.

Anyway, the good news is I'll be here while it's working. :D Thanks for all your messages of support. They mean a lot to me. :) I can't tell you how much I missed you. :(

Hitman, thanks for the advice. ;) Unfortunately, I can't use it, because the cable company has a monopoly of sorts and no real rivals, so threatening them won't work. :p I'm at their mercy.

I still think the problem might be my Windows Millenium Edition. I heard it causes people all sorts of problems, so I might end up buying the XP version in the end, if the problem persists. :( It's expensive though.

But enough about my computer. Let's talk about tennis. :D

Layla

I'm watching Maja Matevzic play Mauresmo on Eurosport! So far it's a great match. Maja even broke Mauresmo in the 5th game and then held but Mauresmo broke back in her next service game.

GO MAJA!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: This is amazing. At the moment, she's getting better results than the other two Slovenes which are ranked above her.

I'm very disappointed that Rainer lost. I really wanted him to do well. Sure I'm happy about Paul-Henri, but I like Rainer more, he's one of my faves.

But Sjeng is still in play, so GO SJENG!!! :bounce:

Pfffft @ the Tokyo tournament. It is now dreadfully boring and lacking in players that could hold my interest. So I'll just wish Norman best of luck but won't be too interested in the results. All of my faves dropped out early and Lleyton departed today so that's it for me. Lol @ at the Spaniards exiting together to players they were supposed to beat. That was so strange. It was like they all caught the same disease. Maybe the food didn't agree with them. ;) Sushi eating sushi? Eugh. http://www.tag-board.com/smilies/sick.gif

I'm really happy Juanqui got a wild card into the Vienna tourney, because Eurosport will be showing one or two matches every day. :) With a bit of luck, I might get to see him play again. :D Of course I'll tell you all about it, if I'll have access to the internet.

Well, I knew the miracle wouldn't work. :( The good news is that the cable guy showed up immediately. He replaced my modem with a new one but he says he's 99% sure it's not the modem's fault. He did find something wierd, it seems like there were 3 drivers installed for my internet connection, 2 for the USB port and 1 for the ethernet card which I don't even have. He deleted them and reinstalled the USB driver.

BUT, like everyone else I talked to, he's convinced it's the Windows ME fault and suggested I get Windows XP. It would cost me a heck load of money.

The problem is, at this point I don't trust any of these so-called experts. The guy at the shop keeps saying it's the modem, the cable guy blames the windows, the company I bought the computer from won't replace my windows system for a reduced price if I give them my ME licence back and just pay for the difference in prices. They insist I pay the whole price for XP and its installation even though they basically scammed me into buying a faulty program. I'm just mad at the whole world right now. :fiery: And at myself for not asking around about the Millenium windows. But my dad bought the computer and it went so fast it never occured to me to check certain things.

So now I have a new modem on trial until Monday and I'm waiting for the computer to crash again. In the meantime, I can stay and talk for a while. ;)

The things they do, the things they say
But baby I'll wipe away those bitter tears http://www.plauder-smilies.de/pftroest.gif

Baby when I get down I turn to you
And you make sense of what I do

Our love comes shining red and gold
And all the rest is by the way

Why worry, there should be laughter after pain http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/lol.gif
