From the ATP site:

Clash of the Spaniards
Juan Carlos Ferrero meets countryman Carlos Moya in the Hong Kong final.

Sunday's final in Hong Kong will be an all-Spanish affair, with both Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Moya posting wins in Saturday's semifinals at the Salem Open. Ferrero, the No. 2 seed, deflated Frenchman Jerome Golmard 6-4, 6-1. So far this week, the Spaniard has not dropped a set.

Moya also needed only two sets to advance to the final, defeating Jonas Bjorkman 6-4, 7-6(1). Moya is seeking his fifth title of the year, having already claimed the champion's trophies in Acapulco, Umag, Bastad and at the Tennis Masters Series event in Cincinnati.

Much remains at stake in Sunday's final, with the two players both in prime contention to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai. They are now tied for the No. 5 slot in the ATP Champions Race.

Although Ferrero leads their series 5-2, Moya defeated his countryman in straight sets the last time they played, earlier this year in Cincinnati in the semifinals.

What the Players Said:

FERRERO I think he (Golmard) played a strange game. He looked very tired in the second set, but I played a really solid game. Jerome has a big serve and serves very well all the time. But I served two aces at 5-4 with the pressure on, so I think I played a good game. I'm working so hard my serve, it's giving results and I'm very comfortable with it right now.

I came from Spain playing very good, practicing very well. I've had great form since the beginning of the week since I played Koubek. I didn't lose one set in the whole week. Moya won Cincinnati without losing one set. Maybe I can do it here. It's a goal for me. I've never won a tournament without losing one set. I think it's very hard to do, especially on hard court because it's not easy to break the serve of the other player. I didn't do so many finals on the hard court and I just won Monte Carlo this year. I did some more finals. But I'd like to win this tournament also because it's hard court.

If I have to play Moya, I know how to play him because I have played him seven times. I just play with him on hard court in Cincinnati and Scottsdale (Arizona, 2000) and the rest I played him in the clay court season. And Bjorkman I played him just one time on hard court and I won, so I have a chance to win tomorrow.

(On reaching the Tennis Masters Cup) I think it's very important. (I'm trying to) do a big result on the way to Shanghai, final here or the champion tomorrow. It's very important to me right now.

GOLMARD(On having the trainer come out after the first set): Nothing very important just a blister on my (right) foot (little toe). I lost my first game on my serve so it was difficult to come back. I had one break point at 5-4, but he served an ace on the second serve. After I was tired and all my body was very stiff.

On the whole, I am very happy with my performance this week. I played four matches in three days - it's very much for me.

Wow, I can't belive the ATPworld is working again! :bounce: I've been trying for hours and I almost lost hope.

Meanwhile, both Kimmy and Juju lost. :sad:

But on a brighter note, I'm so excited about tomorrow's all-Spanish final. I sure hope Juanqui can win this time. I must say he looks very confident, perhaps as confident as I've seen him this year. :) He has had some problems playing his fellow-Spaniards lately, but that won't happen tomorrow. :p He wants this victory too much.

VAMOS JUAN CARLOS!!!

Hehe Leo, we think alike. ;) But it's a sad thought. :sad: Juju was playing so well in the first set. Fantastic really, all the way to the last game, where she fell apart. The second set wasn't so exciting, because she started making mistakes, but she was fighting until the end.

An article from gotennis:

Ferrero cruises past Golmard, into Hong Kong final
Copyright © 2002 Nando Media

HONG KONG (AFP) - Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero feels more at home on the slow clay of Europe, but he declared a new-found liking for hard courts after cruising into the final of the Hong Kong Open on Saturday.

The second seed ripped through French serve volleyer Jerome Golmard in just over an hour for a 6-4, 6-1 win, his fourth straight sets win of the tournament. "I'm feeling so good right now," Ferrero said after the match, highlighting to reporters the fact he had not a lost set this tournament.

"I haven't won a tournament without losing a set before, I'd really like to do that."

Ferrero, ranked six in the world, has won just one tournament on hard court, taking the title at Dubai last year, out of a career total of six.

His other five titles have been on his beloved clay, including his only triumph this year in a Masters Series event in Monte Carlo.

But he said being a touch more aggressive compared with clay, coupled with a couple of weeks of tough practice in Spain leading into the tournament, were the two biggest factors for his extraordinary form here.

"I have really enjoyed playing this week on the hard courts," Ferrero said.

In Sunday's final, Ferrero will play either compatriot and number three seed Carlos Moya or Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman, who were due to play their semifinal here later Saturday night.

Ferrero is equal fifth in the Champions Race with Moya, with only the top seven guaranteed a spot at the elite, season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai, China, in November. The eighth position goes to one of this year's Grand Slam champions who otherwise don't qualify.

Ferrero rarely missed with his heavy topspin groundstrokes off both flanks against Golmard, and it was his backhand that caused the most damage with devastating shots down the line winning him several breakpoints throughout the match.

For Golmard, ranked 136 in the world, it was a case of being too anxious to get into the net that caused him to make far too many unforced errors.

He had had a dream run at this year's Hong Kong Open, knocking out fourth seed Alex Corretja in the second round and fifth seed Juan Ignacio Chela in the quarterfinals.

But the Frenchman was unable to hold his own from the baseline with Ferrero, partly because of a severe blister on his smallest toe on his right foot that needed medical attention in between sets.

thanks for all the articles, Layla! i will DEFINITELTY check that video out from RG! :D

but here's a nice article i found from Bali:

From ESPN.com
BALI, Indonesia -- Svetlana Kuznetsova upset second-seeded Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 7-5, 6-4 in a semifinal Saturday at the Wismilak International.

Eighth-seeded Conchita Martinez ended the run of American qualifier Sarah Taylor with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in to set up a match with Kuznetsova in the final.

In the first semi, the Kuznetsova's firepower earned her a victory over the Spanish veteran Sanchez-Vicario, who is her doubles partner. The Russian has also attended the academy of Sanchez-Vicario's brother, Emilio, for three years.

But Kuznetsova, who has who has risen in the rankings from 264 to 60 this year, was far from thrilled at reaching her second final this year.

"It was the toughest match of my life,'' said Kuznetsova, who was almost in tears afterward. "I can't explain the feeling I had today. I was not happy at all to play against her. I couldn't concentrate in the match because I've never met such a good person in my life.

"I didn't feel like I want to win as I always do. I felt so bad and don't feel good that I beat her. She's helped me a lot in my career and this year I made such a big jump in the ranking. She and my coach have helped me a lot. Without them maybe I wouldn't have made the jump.''

Sanchez-Vicario had similar feelings.

"It's hard when you play against a friend,'' she said. "We have a very good relationship and have practiced together for a long time and spend a lot of time on the tour together.

"It was kind of hard because, whoever won, the other was going to feel down. I would have felt the same way. You just have to give your best and wish them well for the next match.''

In the other semi, Martinez, who withdrew from the doubles the previous evening to protect an ailing shoulder, won the first six games and the last six against Taylor, a plucky opponent who failed to win the important points in many closely fought games.

"It's still sore,'' Martinez said of her shoulder, "but I pulled off all the games that were tight. I wouldn't say I played my best game today.''

Taylor said she was weary after a long week that had her taken from qualifying to within one match of the final.

"This tournament was a breakthrough for me and to play someone of the caliber of Martinez was exciting and fun,'' said Taylor.
~~~~~
i had no idea that ASV and Kuznetsova were such good friends! :)
GO SVETLANA K! i've said it all along, this title is yours, baby! :D
Errr, I wish. That would be so great. :) My name is unpronouncable in English, but the way my American friends in Slovenia pronounce it sounds similar to Layla except for the first letter. My real name is Špela. I don't know if you can see the first letter, as it's a Slavic letter, but it's pronounced sh. It's a very common name in Slovenia, apparently related to Elizabeth. But I have decided years ago that if I ever manage to move to the States of England, I would use the name Layla as I like it a lot more. So for all intents and purposes that is indeed my real name, because in my mind I already live there . :p
I've seen normal towns too and they seem almost as cute as those little villages, at least to me. I spent a month in Luton the second time I visited England. Not that I spent a lot of it in Luton, because I was travelling around so much, but still I like English houses, even the normal ones. And as long as the town has a cinema, it's alright with me. ;)
They have the most incredible cinema in Portland. It's in a funny oriental building straight from Aladdin. The prices are rocking, the cheapest cinema anywhere. But the best part is, you can buy a slice of pizza and BEER and eat and drink while watching the movie. Every row of seats has a row of make-shift tables too. Incredible. I loved it.
No, I didn't even know the board was down, I've been gone for most of the day. Believe me, it would have been driving me crazy as well.
At least Kimmy put up a fight. Three long sets, and I was afraid she'd have trouble against Myskina. I guess I was right . . . but I really wish should could string together a win. She shines at this part of the year :(
Um, I'd assume the men's final is at 6 pm Hong Kong time but I haven't checked anywhere. It will be over by the time I get up tomorrow. I'm not sure how I feel about that--I like watching matches, but it's also nice not to have to go through the agony of following a scoreline.
lol, you're so generous. I wish he could win it in straights. It seem that he really has his eyes set on winning a tourney without dropping a set, so I say GO FOR IT!
I don't mind following the scoreboard if it's the real-time scoreboard like the one for slams. But the updates from Hong Kong are extremely infrequent. Sometimes they don't change for more than a set and that is just plain frustrating. But in the evening I will get to see a replay! :bounce: More taped matches for me! :D I taped today's match of course. :o lol I feel like a squirrel, gathering her nuts for wintertime. If you're like me, you will need them because the withdrawal at the end of the year is sudden and really, really difficult. It's during my Christmas holidays, and it's the only time that I'm free but there's no tennis going on! :o
I would love to have videos of him playing here, especially if he wins! The only tournaments we have coverage of are the last two TMSes and the Master's Cup. That's it, for the rest of the year :( And they are so American-centric that I won't get to see Juanqui or Michel or Jarkko or Zhenya unless he draws an American. That makes me so angry :fiery:
Hopefully TMS Madrid will be good to its home players. :angel:
Layla
Oh that sucks. :( I never thought about that. The Christmas break and the tennis break coincide. We don't have a Chrismas break here (well, two days off), but that's terrible for you. Just when you could be watching tennis all day long. I worked extra hard before RG and wrote all the horoscopes in advance, so that I was free to watch tennis for two weeks. :) I couldn't do the same for the USO because I had other work as well, but it didn't really matter. It's not exactly the same as RG, is it.
During TMS we'll switch. You'll have coverage and I won't. But I'll keep my fingers crossed that your guys draw Americans. And Juanqui will make it to the final anyway, so no worries there. ;) They'll have to show him. :D I think he realizes now that he has to make them show his matches. ;)
Anyway, I'm off to bed now. See you all tomorrow, if the ATPworld doesn't crash again. :fiery:
Everything stops for Roland Garros. Luckily, I'm already in my summer break, but still. I don't do anything during those sacred two weeks. I can't imagine what this board will be like when it rolls around next year! :eek:
If I get to see any coverage I will definitely report back on it. I will have it taped for me so I can watch it later, but it's never the same as live.
Juan Carlos did say something about playing more aggressively on hard courts than on clay, and it looks like he's really come into his own this week, doesn't it? Maybe now they will stop calling him a clay-courter. :rolleyes:
It was basically Juan Carlos answering questions on one of his days off. He said something to the effect of, if all the players did was tennis, they'd explode :D so they should take each chance they have to see the wonders of the world. He said he loved playing in Paris, and that RG was very special to him. But it looked like they were interviewing him while he was taking one of those sight-seeing tours, and it looked like he was on a body of water. :confused:
True, but I'm betting most people see David's incredible performance as a fluke. Because most people don't know he did really well in Wimbly juniors, and he played some awesome matches to get to the final. Unfortunately, since he completely choked in the final :( of course they would say he wasn't at home there.
it was an interview with Ferrero. he was speaking in Spanish, but there were English captions on the bottom. He was talking about going to see all the sites in Paris...and then how he would prepare for his Semifinal match against Guga (in 2001).
Hehe, what a great day today :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Layla, thanks for asking about me, for the game report, and the Eurosports link (I like Eurosports:kiss: it's a lot better than ESPN..) and those articles. And congrats to post 4000 plus. I tried to get on this morning but couldn't. So I went out for lunch and movie and shopping instead...ya, life is boring when there's no tennis on TV, seriously. I don't know what I'm gonna do come Christmas.
I'm really liking the Salem Open now, despite that the website is horrible and weather sucks, it turns out to be pretty good, especially when they have so many pictures of our beloved spaniards. It will be a perfect tournament if Juanqui wins tomorrow. I got a feeling that he will, it's his turn for the revenge. And he sounded so confident and determined. I think he really wants to prove that he can play on hard court. I'm actually happy that he plays Moya (well, that's also because I like Moya too). But I think it will be such a major confident boost to beat Moya on hard court after the Cincy lost.
And I like the Tokyo draw a lot, he gets another real chance to keep the momentum going. And I'm sure he will try very hard to get more titles before indoors comes.
Think I'll be waking up very early tomorrow to check the score. I sure hope that Juanqui will get his 2nd title of the year. Good Luck Juanqui. :bounce:
As it seems some people here like football/soccer, I went to the stadium today (for the 100th time this year, I guess :p) to watch my fave team play.
They played a horrible match and lost 2-1 at home! :mad:
Gosh, something like that can ruin my whole weekend.
And on Monday I will have to take a 300km trip to take pictures and make an interview for a work on history of the local architecture.
On Tuesday I will be in the campus the whole day, working and studying.
On Wednesday I have classes in the morning and have to finish a work in the afternoon (the history one), since it has to be ready for Thursday afternoon, in which I also have a TOUGH test.
Thursday night class and I have to finish another work, but a lot lighter one.
What should I do? Shoot me in the head or shoot me in the chest? :p :o
I feel better after the vent! :p
Unfortunately, since he completely choked in the final :( of course they would say he wasn't at home there.
I cried when he lost :( He was so impressive during the whole week, and has continued to be since.
I didn't know you were a big David supporter :o Sorry, I'm not sure where I've been ;) I think I just got confused during DC with Argentina vs Russian and the hard core Kafel cheering :D
Granted, I would have never in 0980242132 years picked him to make the Wimbledon finals. In fact, I will be surprised if he does it again. But he played some great matches to get there, and deserved it. It is too bad he played poor in the finals, but I had prepared for it ;) I didn't expect he'd beat Hewitt - I didn't think he was ready. So I wasn't sad when he lost, just a little disheartened at the scoreline.
From gotennis:
Ferrero holds off Moya to clinch Salem Open
HONG KONG (AFP) - Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero overcame compatriot Carlos Moya with a relentless display of power tennis Sunday to win the $400,000 Salem Open.
The Spaniards, who had vowed before the match to put their off-court friendship to the side for the showdown, unloaded a barrage of ferocious groundstroke winners during a two-hour, four-minute battle in front of 2,000 fans at Victoria Park.
However, Ferrero's unfaltering self-belief and a few moments of timely good fortune were all that separated the evenly-matched duo, and a searing ace down the middle finally gave him a deserved 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) win and the $51,000 winner's purse.
Well, it was through no fault of my own that nothing transpired between hitman and I last night. I hinted to him as well, but he was barely around :( I guess I scared him off. :sad:
Rebecca, I'm sorry I didn't come back last night :( I was tired and also talking to one of my friends (another reason the conversation didn't get good between hitman and me).
You know, Layla, if you want drama you can create some of your own ;) After all, the story has been sitting for almost a month with no update :eek: ;) No pressure, though :D
Yeah, I think he was on a sight-seeing boat going down the Seinne. It's not all that interesting, but I thought you might enjoy Juan Carlos speaking in Spanish. ;)
Eurosport has an archive of clips going back a month, but no more Juanqui. Oh did you see that pre-Davis Cup interview with Blake? That was great too, I recommend it. It's now under the Audio/Video heading.
Indeed I did love hearing him speak in his native language :hearts: He's just so . . . him. I listened to it twice in a row :o
No, I didn't listen to the Blake interview but I can go back and do that. I was watching all of the old Roland Garros stuff and thinking, "Wow, Eurosport is way cool."
I can't wait to see your report on the match today, it's sure to be sweet :)
Ahem, my report will be sweet but brief! :( I just realized that they won't show the whole match, but less than an hour of it. :sad: I'm really disappointed. No, I'm not. Can't be disappointed on a day like this. As long as I get to see the final tie-break, I will be happy! :)
Yes Eurosport is the best place to be during Roland Garros. :) And it would be even better if it had more money to buy right to tournaments such as TMS. But right now I'm not complaining. Talk to me in a few weeks though. ;)
The installments are far from finished, but I'm working on them. :o
Here's a longer article from gotennis. It really goes into detail. :)
Ferrero holds off Moya to clinch Hong Kong tourney
HONG KONG (AFP) - Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero overcame compatriot Carlos Moya with a relentless display of power tennis Sunday to win the $400,000 Salem Open.
The Spaniards, who had vowed before the match to put their off-court friendship to one side for the showdown, unloaded a barrage of ferocious groundstroke winners during a two-hour, four-minute battle in front of 2,000 fans at Victoria Park.
However, Ferrero's unfaltering self-belief and a few moments of timely good fortune were all that separated the evenly matched duo, and a searing ace down the middle finally gave him a deserved 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) win and the $51,000 winner's purse.
"I wanted to play better than last year," said a delighted Ferrero, who was knocked out in the quarterfinals in 2001.
"This year is my year," he added.
"A lot of people in Spain still think we can't play well on (a) hard court, but I want to tell the people in Spain we can."
Moya had entered the final with the slight pyschological edge, having ousted Ferrero in the semifinal of the Master Series event in Cincinatti, their last meeting on a hard court, in August. He duly added the Master Series title to his wins in Acapulco, Bastad and Umag this year.
However, Ferrero led 5-2 in career meetings and had looked in ominous form, reaching the Hong Kong final without dropping a set in four games.
Ferrero drew first blood when his fiercely struck backhand clipped the top of the net and looped over Moya's outstretched racket to hand him the first break, in the seventh game of the first set. He broke again two games later to wrap up the set.
However, it was all Moya in the next as he hurried Ferrero into a string of errors with surprise forays into the net to race away with the second set, 6-1.
Roared on by the crowd, Ferrero broke against the run of play in the third game of the final set when Moya speared a backhand inches wide. However, the head-banded Moya hit back immediately in the next as the set entered a nerve-wracking tie-breaker.
"In the beginning of the third set, I was 1-1 and 40-love and made some stupid mistakes and he broke my serve," Moya said. "I broke back, but the momentum was gone.
"When you get into a tie-breaker in the third set, anything can happen. I think we both deserved to win today, but in tennis there can only be one winner and today was his day," he said.
Ironically, it was two brilliant volleys from baseliner Ferrero which turned the tide decisively, the first a stop-volley followed by a lunging forehand forehand stab that gave him the killer mini-break.
A huge ace down the middle gave him the match and had the usually placid Ferrero pumping his fists with joy.
"It was very important for me to win here, especially with my confidence. All the rest of the tournaments (this year) are on hard courts and if I can win here, then why can't I win elsewhere?" said Ferrero, who like Moya next heads to Tokyo.
This tournament may be moved to Beijing next year.
The victory and the 35 Champions Race points elevate Ferrero, winning his second title of the year, from joint fifth with Moya to sole fourth place, and cements his bid for one of the coveted eight spots available for the end-of-season $3.7 million Masters Cup in Shanghai
Damn right, Juanqui can win anywhere on hard, watch out Tokyo. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: This is so great. He's back, and full of confidence. Thanks for letting him win.
Hey, too bad they will move the tourney, I'm starting to like it there in Hong Kong, what fond memory! But that trophy:rolleyes:quite ugly I must say. But I'm sure JC will be as happy now if you give him a stone.
I do feel a little sad for Moya, I'm sure he deserved to win too. But someone has to win. I wish both of them can get to Shanghai.
BTW, hi everyone here! I haven't get a chance to check on Layla's report (and not sure if you've seen the match yet on TV). I'm glad that you got a chance to watch the final, do tell us details of the tie-break...
Well, I'm gonna go around and catch up. Have a great day everyone.
I used Vera's trick and searched the entire photo gallery at Yahoo :D I got it in hopes of being able to update my website, but unfortunately I can't find the ladies draw for the Kremlin Cup ANYWHERE, and I wanted to do all of my updating in one swoop.
On the bright side, I'm thinking of writing a preview to the Kremlin Cup. It's such a loaded field on both sides. I went to look at the men's draw today and almost had a heart attack because I thought Michel and Jarkko were going to play in the first round! But no, they are just listed next to each other and will not meet in the first round. That would really suck :(
Michel is playing Andre Sa and Jarkko is playing Marcelo Rios. I hope Michel does well on indoor carpet because he has finals points to defend this week. Why he didn't go back to Tokyo I don't know :confused: But I don't want him to screw himself over with this jaunt to Russia.
Jarkko actually has a pretty decent indoor carpet record, Challenger-level of course. He had a great run to the final of Stockholm last year, but I don't remember if that was carpet or just an indoor court. We'll see how he does, I'm just ecstatic that he's in the main draw on his first try :)
Who? Villeneuve? Yes he is. :) Too bad he's not driving for one of the big shots. He's a really good driver. Used to be right at the top.
