Me too. But I was young then. Maybe I would have an easier time now. I'm certainly fitter than I was at that time.

Yeah, hockey does have a bad image. That's why I like the fact that we have more and more European players, they are more skillful and focus on the finesse part more than the physical part.

I much prefer the summer olympic games, because I like more summer sports: swimming, diving, gymnastics, and of course tennis ;)

The SLC olympics were completely ruined by all of the skating scandals. So I used to have a passing interest in figure skating, but no more. That completely ruined it for me.

But then I miss clay courts so much. I can't believe how long I will have to wait before I see the beautiful red clay again.

Clay courts  I love them, too. I didn't realize until last year that the Challenger played near me was on clay!! Boy do I feel stupid for skipping out on it for the past few years  at myself.

I more or less gurantee you that if Russia wins the Davis Cup this year, Zhenya will smile enough to make up for all of the past years when the Russian mentality took over.

I, too, will be smiling that much as well. It'd be almost as great as the 2000 win. For different reasons, of course :)

I give up

YOu guys were even talking about Hockey :D :p I used to watch hockey, then gave up for a while. Then the Olympics came along, and everyone here sort of got swept up in it all, so I joined for kicks lol. At first I thought some people were putting too much pressure on the Canadian mens team (the womens was already down to the US and Canada, no offense to other teams), and being maybe unrealistic.

But they got better every game :) I watched the finals with a groupd of freinds about 40 minutes from my home at the univerisyt - it was the last day of reading week. After it was done we drove back here. It was funny though, because there were kids all over the place playing pick up hockey on the side of the road, or groups of people flag waving, and the roads were packed with cars of people beeping their horns and flag waving :p

It all seemed to surreal to me, because you just don't see that here :p

Chloe le Bopper
09-18-2002, 04:01 AM
My freinds went downtown when they got back here, and flag waved for a while.

Apparently there were a couple people running around with nothing but flags on  :p But you couldn't drive downtown here - a city of about 100 000 and they had to close off some of the streets

And I don't even want to imagine what Younge Street in Toronto was like :p We thought of going there, but we knew there was no bloody way we'd get into Toronto at that point :p

I'm back, but everyone's in bed...

Oh, that olympics moment. Ya, so nice. I wasn't expecting much in SLC, cos they lost in Nagano when I thought they would win. And then they suck at the opening game, must be a tactic for lowering the expectation of everyone. But winning the gold means so much. I'm as excited that woman hockey team won too cos they haven't beat the US team for awhile. Anyway, I watched the game in Seattle so I missed out on the celebration. But it's really a golden moment. Also very happy that Marc Gagnon won 5 medals in the short-track, what a performance.

Anyway, l love watching Olympics, both winter and summer. And can't wait for 2004 in Athen.

I'm just back from the movies. I saw The Sum of All Fears and it wasn't as bad as I expected. I actually quite enjoyed it if you discount the usual stupidity factor and go along for the ride. Yeah, I just ignored that and moved on to skiing, cross-country skiing and biathlon. Those were my favorite. :) Of course cross-country skiing was also tarnished with a scandal - a doping scandal. But I still enjoyed it.

I used to love figure skating back in the days of Brian Boitano and Brian Orser, but since then I only watch it occasionally, so the silly scandal didn't really bother me that much. I don't harbor any illusions that everything is always fair and square. There will be slip-ups. Although it's true that figure skating is the most difficult sport to judge.

I hope you didn't miss Yagudin's spectacular performance. That was pure poetry on ice. He blew everyone away. His performance was a thing of perfection.

Well I was never a diehard fan, because I don't really consider figure skating a sport. Sure, its tough to do, but the fact that there's not objective way to judge it lends itself to this idea of it not being a sport. I quite enjoyed watching Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov skate. The perfect Russian love story :) But since then the sport has become younger and even more incredibly stupid when it comes to judging and such.

Of course I didn't miss Sasha Yagudin's performance. One of my friends knew what's his name, the American boy with the curly hair. She goes to school with him now, in fact. But we all crowded in for the men's long program and it was quite nice :)

It is a borderline sport. To me, it's more like ballet. Impossible to judge objectively, which opens itself to all sorts of fallacies.

You mean Timothy Goebel. I like him a lot. He's all smiles and has unbelievable jumps.

I totally agree with you here :( REgardless of wether or no the Canadian pair "deserved" to win the gold or not, doesn't change the fact that the judging was exposed for what it is

I always rather thought that it was rubbish, and hearing all the people come forward to confirm that just made me think so further.

Anyway, I know the story is about JC, but maybe you guys should add more interactions involving other players to make it more fun.

LAYLA'S SONG

(Do you like the Who? :D)

Outside the house
Mr. Simpson announced
That Sally couldn't go to the meeting.
He went on cleaning his blue Rolls Royce
And she ran inside weeping.
She got to her room
And tears splashed the picture
Of the new Messiah.
She picked up a book of her father's life
And threw it on the fire!

She knew from the start
Deep down in her heart
That she and Tommy were worlds apart.
But her mother said,
"Never you mind, your part . . .
Is to be what you'll be . . ."

The theme of the sermon was
'Come unto me, love will find a way.'
So Sally decided to ignore her dad
And sneak out anyway!
She spent all afternoon getting ready
And decided she'd try to touch him.
Maybe he'd see that she was free
And talk to her this Sunday.

She knew from the start
Deep down in her heart
That she and Tommy were worlds apart.
But her mother said,
"Never mind, your part . . .
Is to be what you'll be . . ."

She arrived at six
And the place was swinging
To gospel music by nine.
Group after group appeared on the stage
And Sally just sat there crying.
She bit her nails,
Looking pretty as a picture
Right in the very front row.
And then a DJ wearing a blazer
With a badge
Ran on and said, "Here we go!"

The crowd went crazy
As Tommy hit the stage!
Little Sally got lost as the police bossed
The crowd back in a rage!

But soon the atmosphere was cooler
As Tommy gave a lesson.
Sally just had to let him know
She loved him
And leapt up on the rostrum!
She ran cross stage to the spotlit figure
And brushed him on the face.
Tommy whirled around
As a uniformed man
Threw her off the stage.

She knew from the start
Deep down in her heart
That she and Tommy were worlds apart.
But her mother said,
"Never mind, your part . . .
Is to be what you'll be . . ."

Her cheek hit a chair
And blood trickled down,
Mingling with her tears.
Tommy carried on preaching
And his voice filled Sally's ear.
She caught his eye, she had to try
But couldn't see through the lights.
Her face was gashed
And the ambulance man
Had to carry her out that night.

The crowd went crazy
As Tommy left the stage!
Little Sally was lost
For the price of a touch
And a gash across her face! Oooooh!

Sixteen stitches put her right
And her dad said,
"Don't say I didn't warn yer."
Sally got married to a rock musician
She met in California.
Tommy always talks about the day
The disciples all went wild!
Sally still carries a scar on her cheek
To remind her of his smile.

She knew from the start
Deep down in her heart
That she and Tommy were worlds apart.
But her mother said,
"Never mind, your part . . .
Is to be what you'll be . . ."

I, too, am sad that Grosjean is looking down and out at DC :( But on the other hand, I'll have some of Paul-Henri's matches on tape! He was very impressive at RG this year, I think he'll give the American boys a run for their money.

The player interactions is where the tennis parts come back in. I mean, right now we've got him isolated in Spain, with just that one short visit from the Spanish players. When he starts playing again, there will be more player interactions, I promise ;)

Again, no coverage here so I won't be seeing any French players on clay. :( I miss clay, it's my favorite surface, to watch... I wonder how it feels to play on clay...

Seeing everyone is excited about the DC, gets me wonder, why on earth we don't care about tennis here. I know that every single canadian boy wants to grow up to be a hockey player. But, so as every Swede boy, still they got some many tennis greats. Well, I can only wish one day. :)

BTW, I checked the tennis tape price and it's more expensive than Rebecca estimated. But then, they have that DC match between Hewitt and Juanqui in 2000. I've read so much about that match that I'm dying to see it. Guess I just need to start saving up more.

Tina retired because of a stomach virus. She's headed back to Europe and I hope she gets well soon. Maybe it's just a 24-hour thing, I don't know. I read it this morning on a Slovene webpage.

Oh yes, I like the Who, especially Tommy. :) This is really a perfect song for me, being a fan at heart. I have been known to follow a band or too around (well not really, but I did go to several concerts in Slovenia) and I've been called a groupie by several of my friends for this and other reasons (gushing over certain band members for instance) but I would never even dream of approaching anyone. I don't like being a nuisance. :o Besides I'm far too shy for that. But that's why Almost Famous was so moving to me. I knew exactly what it feels like to be a fan, even if I didn't go to any extremes.

I'm not sure Seb is out of the picture. Did that article in GM provide the latest news? Because he did say he felt fine when he started practicing again. I think and hope he'll be ok, but I'm seriously worried about France's prospect. Wasn't it enough to endure a Sampras/Agassi US final, do I have to experience US vs. Argentina as well? I think somebody up there is trying to break my spirit. :) ;)

LOL, as I was writing out the lyrics to this song I was like, "Whoa, this could have been a song for the story!!"

I was originally thinking "I'm Free" from the same album. I've been listening to Tommy nonstop all week. My favorite song is "Pinball Wizard", but I really love the whole album.

I've never been called a groupie, but I am definitely a tennis groupie. It's amazing how much of my time I spend thinking about tennis and players and tournaments and all of it. I practically went through withdrawal last year after the Masters Cup :o

Fandom is no stranger to me, either :)

RUSSIA IS NOT OUT OF THIS THING.

An article posted in the Russian thread of the DC forum said that Yevgeny's finger is feeling much better, and Safin is looking to break out of his slump on the indoor carpet. Both of them want this :)

I think I've exchanged my devotion to those groups (I haven't even seen them play in ages) for tennis now. Last year I wasn't hooked yet, but this year I will experience that withdrawal for the first time. Hopefully, we'll all be here for each other in out tennis-deprived days and reminisce. :) But then I'll have skiing to fall back to, so it won't be that bad.

I'm so excited for Davis Cup to start! I can hardly wait for tomorrow :)

The Argentinean team is strange! They aren't playing Nalbandian on singles. Does anyone know about his doubles record? I think he was a good doubs player when he was junior--he defeated Jarkko in junior doubs at Wimbly if I remember correctly ;)

Yevgeny is still threatening to retire after this year  He's been such a mainstay for the past ten years it's hard to imagine the tour without him :( And I never was able to see him play in person :( :(

Someone apparently stole Marat's car? God, I hope that doesn't throw him completely out of it. Or, we could always blame an Argentine conspiracy if something "happens" during the DC tie :D

And, of course, Switzerland vs. Morocco. I saw the article Doris posted in the DC forum about them winning for Peter Carter. I hope they demolish the competition!! :)

I'm STILL pissed that I won't get to see Finland vs the Netherlands! :fiery:

I still don't believe Yevgeny will retire. We'll see next year, but I'm pretty sure he won't, so hopefully you'll still get to see him play some day. :) As for Marat, maybe this is actually a good thing. He tends to play better if he's angry sometimes. Perhaps he'll blame the Argentines and will be out to destroy them. :D I would run for cover if I were them. ;)

According to the AP article:

"Kim Clijsters overcame dropping a second set 6-0 to beat Svetlana Kuznetsova. They were tied 5-5 in the third before third-seeded Clijsters won the 11th game when Kuznetsova's forehand return fell long, and broke serve to win 7-5."

Roddick to face Clement in Davis Cup opener
Copyright © 2002 AP MegaSports

PARIS (AP) - Andy Roddick will open the U.S. team's Davis Cup semifinal Friday against defending champion France by playing Arnaud Clement.

The second singles match at Roland Garros, home of the French Open, will be between James Blake and Sebastien Grosjean, France's highest-ranked player.

Officials at Thursday's draw announced that the doubles match Saturday would be between Fabrice Santoro and Mickael Llodra of France and Todd Martin and Mardy Fish of the United States. The reverse singles take place Sunday.

Roddick lost his only previous singles match against Clement at the World Team Cup last May. Grosjean beat Blake in their only previous match in the second round of this year's French Open.

Blake is 5-0 in Davis Cup matches, including two wins in doubles, while Roddick has won all seven of his Cup matches.

Grosjean has an 8-6 Cup record, while Clement, the 2001 Australian Open finalist, is 5-4. Both have played only singles.

Well, five weeks from the injury would have been the week after the US Open. Which means Bucharest (mm, clay :D), Bahia (Brazil), or Tashkent. Then you have Italy, which is kinda small but on clay, and the Salem Open in Hong Kong, which he's been playing.

The next tourney on the calendar in Europe is Vienna, which is in a few weeks from now--I think that'd be too long to keep him away.

But here's a thought: we could have him come back at Bucharest or Italy, because clay is the easiest on an injury. He'd be the biggest name at either of them, could have some interesting conversations with the other players, and maybe win. Then we could cart him to a hard court or Moscow (carpet? I dunno--but I want him in Russia at some point! :D)

LOL, good thing we don't plan his real schedule!!

Layla - Lindsay has a nice pic in the calender actually :) I'm sure it is on the web somewhere  She is all in white, and leaning over with her hands on the top of her racquet - which is resting on the ground- with a big grin on her face.
Did I tell you I saw LIndsay practicing at the US Open? SHe was on one of the open courts for some reason - anyhow i took two pretty decent pics, so if I ever find my way to a scanner I'll post them :p (along with the juan carlos ones).

Tennishack - I DO indeed keep weird hours :p But then again, so do you people :D
And I'm slightly annoyed that they don't have David playing singles :( I am rooting for Russia but only because of Yevgeny. Either than that I'd be doing a full out Argentine RAH RAH dance right about now :(

Am I the only person around here who couldn't care less for Kim Clijsters? I don't know what it is - she seems nice etc etc - maybe it is her game I dont like  Ah yes, but Allez Justine :D

In all due respect to Blake and Roddick, it is easy to have intimidating looking stats, when you play opponents ranked 50-200 ranking spots below you every match.

The French teams singles players are more experienced in terms of having played top players.
