Robert Smeets his match
by Bren O'Brien
Thursday, 18 January, 2007

The campaign of Australian wildcard Robert Smeets has been ended by Czech No.13 seed Tomas Berdych, who booked his spot in the third round with a straight-sets win on Margaret Court Arena.
Berdych, considered somewhat of a dark horse for the men's title after a strong first round performance, looked every bit the contender against the Dutch-born 21 year-old, winning 6-3 6-2 6-4.
A single break of serve decided the first set, with the Australian faltering, and handing Berdych a one-set advantage. The Czech wound up the pressure in the second set with two breaks, and just seven unforced errors to bounce to a 2-0 lead.
Smeets rallied hard, and got his first break for the match in the third set. But Berdych was firmly in control, with two breaks of his own to book his spot in the final 32 against either Max Mirnyi or Dmitry Tursunov.

Not clowning around: Tursunov has torn tendon

By Matthew Cronin, TennisReporters.net

FROM THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN Ė Dmitry Tursunov may come off as goofy and easy going, but he doesnít treat his body that way. The infamous ATP blogger and 21st seed has a torn tendon in his left wrist and may not be able to last in his third-round match against No. 13 Tomas Berdych on Saturday. In fact, a doctor has told him that he might only be good for three to four matches during the tournament before he risks excessive damage. Why heís even competing when the whole year is in front of him is a very good question.

ďI was thinking of pulling out of this one and Iím not really hoping for anything,Ē Tursunov told TennisReporters.net. "I feel the pain in my backhand. The doctor says I canít rip it, but itís getting damaged slowly. But if I feel too much pain, Iíll stop. If I reach the quarters, then Iíll start worrying. Iím going to go out and do my best but there is little I can do.Ē

I attended both of Tomasís matches and heís playing really well. Obviously he hasnít come up against great opponents but heís beaten both with ease without breaking too much of a sweat. Heís serving well and his ground strokes and in fine form. He also attended Safarovaís 2nd and 3rd Round matches, giving her support. ;)

Heís got a terrific cheer squad that have been to both his games offering him great support. The ďTomas Berdych ArmyĒ they like to call themselves. :p He enjoys their support and why wouldnít he as they are quite entertaining.

Hopefully he continues to progress deep into the second week.

That was incredibly frustrating. :o

He should have won the first set 6-3 after serving at 5-3 only to serve 3 double faults. Then he was clearly the most impressive player in the second set and had about 8 break points, but lost them all. He had 0-40 when Davydenko was serving for the set, and threw them all away. Then he just gifted the 3rd set with minimal effort. He had a break in the 4th only to lose that and get defeated in the tiebreak.

Yet another wasted oppertunity. :(

 WOW we were in the same place and didn't even get to meet for an argument??

Just joking :p
----------------------------------

I missed Tomas's 1st round coz I was watching Almagro v Ginepri and trying to catch some shade inbetween (that was the ridiculously hot day :speakles: ). I saw his round 2, 3 and 4 matches though. Impressive all the way I thought. Yesterday against Davydenko he was great in parts and the match was extremely close except for when he flaked and gave away the 3rd set - that was really disappointing. Was also extremely impressed with his mental attitude when he was 0-40 giving Davydenko 3 match points. He fought back well to win the game and take it to the TB.

All in all... after seeing a very disappointing effort against Simon last year and losing 1st round to Coria the year before, I'm SOOO happy that I've been able to witness some great live singles tennis from Tomas this year :D Before this I'd only had his impressive QF in doubles in 2005.

Yes I did take photos again too... but I have to do the uploading/editing/resizing before I can share them ;)

I either dont think Tomas wasnt able to win over Davy but something kinda worried me before the match :p I watched two videos for them each to get interviewed. when being asked how to do with each other for the next round, Davy said he had to work hard to make no mistake while Tomas said he played very well beating Tursunov, even in windy situation he could play well :p so sounded Davy in mind did a little bit more than Tomas ;)

Tomas, you can. next time please dont underrate your opponent no matter how, to get enough ready will help you more :)
