BRYAN‑BRYAN/Bjorkman‑Mirnyi
7‑5, 7‑5

An interview with:
BOB and MIKE BRYAN

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. Bjorkman and Mirnyi beat you the last four times. Was that sweet revenge?

BOB BRYAN: Three or four?

MIKE BRYAN: He probably knows better than us. Last year they beat us in three finals. We finally beat Jonas in a Grand Slam final. He was 3‑0 against us.

BOB BRYAN: 3‑1. We beat him at the US Open.

MIKE BRYAN: He's a tough player. Yeah, it feels kind of like a little revenge. You know, we'd be happy to beat anyone in there.

A Grand Slam final is a Grand Slam final. It's good to beat a tough player like Jonas. He doesn't give you the match.

Q. You've won all four Grand Slam doubles titles. Have you any ambitions left?

BOB BRYAN: We always want to play well at these tournaments, these Grand Slams. I think it's where you're remembered in this game. We want to stack up against some of the great teams.

By winning all four, that put us in the history books. Davis Cup's big for us. We always want to play well at Davis Cup. We lost in the finals to Spain that one year. I know James Blake and Andy Roddick are really ambitious about the Davis Cup. We want to help them win that.

Q. What makes you a great doubles team?

MIKE BRYAN: We're twins. :haha: We've been playing together since we were five years old. We're a lefty‑righty combination. Bob is a huge server; I'm a pretty good returner. If you play thousands of matches together, you're going to flow well out there on the court.

We don't use too many signals. We just wing it now. We've played so many matches that we kind of read each other's minds out there.

Q. How do you compare this win with your other Grand Slam wins?

BOB BRYAN: Every one is special. It's great to come out and start this year well. We're on top of the rankings right now. It's good to have that little one up on everyone to start the year.

I can't say it's more special than any other ones we had. Winning that first one is awesome. Winning Wimbledon was a dream come true just because it completed the set of four. Winning the Open in our own country was certainly special also.

But to come down here and get to the finals four years in a row, to defend our first ‑‑ it's the first time we've ever defended a Grand Slam. That's also special.

Q. You spoke about wanting to stack up against the great doubles teams. In your opinion, who are those teams?

BOB BRYAN: The Woodies are up there. McEnroe/Fleming. Eltingh/Haarhuis, they won all four. Who else would you consider?

MIKE BRYAN: Stan Smith and Bob Lutz. You can go back. I'd say at the top of the list, you probably would have to say the Woodies. For us, I think they're the greatest team of all time. What they did at Wimbledon, their domination, they dominated over a decade. Just playing against them, we actually were lucky enough to play against them. Them not being big guys, they still dismantled teams with their poaching, their intelligent play out there.

Yeah, I think definitely on paper and being able to play against them, I think they're the greatest team to ever play.

Q. What do you think set them apart? Was it their intelligence?

MIKE BRYAN: They used the angles. They didn't have a big serve, but they used the angles. Yeah, they dissected teams. They had the great scouting reports, would figure out ways to beat, you know, the big teams. I think they won five Wimbledons in a row. Grass is a surface that neutralizes. It's pretty short points. They somehow won five in a row.

BOB BRYAN: That's probably what was so impressive. They didn't have a huge weapon, but they were able to use their minds, their solid Aussie volleys to really tear teams up.

Q. Do you ever get the hankering to go out and play singles?

BOB BRYAN: This is what we do. This is kind of where we want to leave our mark. It's tough now. The way the rankings are set up, we'd have to go back to the minor leagues and play over in Waco, Texas, for two years, grind it out. We don't have that kind of time any more at 28 years old.

This is what the sponsors pay us to do, is play doubles. They want to see us on the doubles court. We're loving doing it. We have more fun. It's more gratifying to win a doubles match with Mike, to share it with him.

Q. Have you ever had the feeling that maybe you'd like to split up at some stage?

MIKE BRYAN: No.

Q. Never crossed your mind?:retard:

MIKE BRYAN: It has crossed our mind when we have those tough moments when we're fighting after a loss. We're in this together. We're going to finish our careers together. Yeah, as Bob said, it's more special winning. Obviously it hurts a little bit worse losing with your twin brother because, you know, he feels like he can say anything to me and I can say anything to him ‑ and we usually do.

Yeah, I mean, we're having a great time doing this thing together.

Tytta!.

well after taking a week off after DC, the guys are in Rotterdam, they won their first round match in a SuperTB, even though they didn't face a BP all match.

I saw them in Rotterdam :D . They are really nice and it looked like they were just getting used to the tournament slowly. They already arrived in the weekend, so enough time to sleep off the jetlag :p .
They lost a set against the Frenchies, but I never got the idea they were going to lose the match.

And a question, who is the trainer with a little ponytail? He was always doing some exercise with Mike after training.
First I thought they brought their own ballkid, because I only saw him catching balls during training

Bryan quits as a result of Bob’s illness
23-02-2007

Bob Bryan has withdrawn from the 34th ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. The Indian/Serbian duo Bhupathi/Zimonjic therefore automatically place themselves for the semi-finals against Damm/Paes.

The Bryan brothers, the world’s number one doubles team, were one of the tournament’s major attractions. To fill the gap in the afternoon programme, the organisation decided to have a demonstration game played on the centre court. Robin Haase (photo) replaced Bob Bryan in a doubles game with Mike against Mahesh Bhupathi and Nenad Zimonjic.

Thanks :) I thought about the entry rankings, but still don't understand... Why are they lower than Max and Jonas? They was 1-2 after the last season, then both teams lost in the 1st round of Sydney, but Bryans won AO and right after that they became 3-4

SONY ERICSSON OPEN

March 31, 2007

Bob Bryan
Mike Bryan

KEY BISCAYNE, FLORIDA

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. This is one of the few that you hadn't checked off the list, so it must feel good.
MIKE BRYAN: This is great. It's one of the tournaments where we really broke onto the scene. Back in '99 we made the quarters. We were stoked. We played Boris Becker out there on stadium court right as he's leaving his career, and that's where we made our mark. :D
It's great to get over the hump. Eight years later, we finally won this title. :awww: :D It's the fifth Grand Slam, and they have that plaque of all the players right there that have won in the locker, right in front of everyone. So you can really feel good about yourself when you walk in there every day.

Q. You guys go straight to North Carolina now?
BOB BRYAN: Yeah, we're meeting the team in Charlotte tomorrow morning, and we're going to do -- I think we're going to go with the NASCAR race. I don't know if we're going to open the race, but we're going to do something up there. I think we're going to meet Andy, James, and Marty, so it will be fun.

Q. Have you talked to Andy?
BOB BRYAN: Yeah, I talked to Andy a couple of times on the phone. It sounds like he's in okay shape. And I think he's going to start hitting in a few days.
MIKE BRYAN: I think he's going to be hitting tomorrow.
BOB BRYAN: Yeah, he might even be hitting tomorrow; that's pretty reassuring that he's 100%.

Q. I understand Pat picked the practice partners partly to give you guys what you needed to get ready. Can you talk about that?
BOB BRYAN: Yeah, he's bringing Donald -- one of the guys he's bringing is Donald Young, who is a lefty, up-and-coming American. And yeah, he's had some good doubles results. So we'll be playing a lot with him.
He's also bringing Sam Querrey. He called Sam Querrey right when Andy got hurt and invited him in case he wasn't a hundred percent.
MIKE BRYAN: He has some options with Marty and Sam. Yeah, the practice partners, we always pick someone -- if we're playing on clay, we pick a good grinder, good baseliner, because we're playing all these lefties. We've got Donald, and try to give these guys a taste of what's in their future.

Q. You're going to be playing in front of a huge crowd there. When is the last time you played in front of a crowd that big?
MIKE BRYAN: Well, I think Charleston was a great crowd. I'm not sure if that was 12. You know, obviously Seville, Spain, was just a sea of people. This is going to be probably the second biggest crowd we've ever played in front of. Yeah, what about Grand Slams, I'm not sure how big those are. But Wimbledon was packed. So we've seen it before, but it's always more fun when you're playing in an atmosphere like that.

Q. What are your other goals for this season besides winning this weekend?
BOB BRYAN: Next goal is Davis Cup. We want to advance to the next round. We've got that in our sights all year long. Then, you know, we want to finish No. 1 again. A lot of teams are on our heels. And to finish No. 1, you've got to have a consistent season. But at least to win another Grand Slam and just play well all year long, then obviously next year qualify for the Olympics.

Bryan Brothers Reach Monte-Carlo Final

Top-seeded Bob and Mike Bryan (pictured) reached the ATP Masters Series Monte-Carlo final for the first time since 2005 on Saturday.

The leaders of the Stanford ATP Doubles Race took their places after a 7-6(2), 6-2 win over No. 5 seeds Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett in 82 minutes.

The Bryans won 65 of 121 points in total, hitting four aces and break serve three times from nine opportunities. They have yet to drop a set en route to the championship match.

Hanley and Ullyett will rise one place to No. 4 in the Stanford ATP Doubles Race when the rankings are published on Monday. The Australian-Zimbabwean team won the Sydney title (d. Knowles-Nestor) in January prior to reaching the Australian Open semifinals (l. to Bjorkman-Mirnyi).

The Bryans improve to 25-2 and will look to win their fifth ATP crown this year. The Americans lost to Leander Paes and Nenad Zimonjic in the 2005 Monte Carlo final.

They now await the winners of either No. 7 seeds Simon Aspelin and Julian Knowle or French squad Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet.

Bryans Win First Monte-Carlo Crown

Top-seeded Bob and Mike Bryan clinched their first title at ATP Masters Series Monte-Carlo presented by Rolex on Sunday.

The Bryan brothers defeated the French team of Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-3 in 49 minutes. They had lost to Leander Paes and Nenad Zimonjic in the 2005 final.

The Bryans did not drop one set en route to the title and lost just 16 games in total during the week.

It was the Bryans 38th career title and their seventh ATP Masters Series shield. They have reached the final of all nine ATP Masters Series events.

They now have an ATP-best five titles for the season, :worship: and extend their lead in the Stanford ATP Doubles Race. They will split €111,000 in prize money.

The Americans are 38-22 lifetime together in finals, putting them in seventh place on the Open Era doubles team list.

The pair is 26-2 on the season with other titles at the Australian Open, Las Vegas, ATP Masters Series Indian Wells and Houston. They improve their career record to 407-165.

Benneteau and Gasquet won 25 of 79 total points and converted one of six break point opportunities in the final.

They had defeated three seeds en route to the final, including No. 6 Erlich-Ram, No. 2/defending champions Bjorkman-Mirnyi and No. 7 Aspelin-Knowle.

The pair, who split €63,000 in prize money, has an 8-2-career record together from three ATP-level tournaments.

The last French duo to reach the final was Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro in 2003 and the last French squad to capture the title was Guy Forget and Yannick Noah in 1986.
