IT’S OFFICIAL: PRO TENNIS WORLD OPEN STRONGEST CHALLENGER FIELD IN ATP HISTORY

Main Draw cutoff is 76 – Stronger than Scottsdale, Acapulco and ITC

(Boca Raton, FL) - Because it’s strategically scheduled between the Pacific Life Open and Nasdaq-100 Open, the Pro Tennis World Open, an ATP Challenger event, has attracted an unprecedented field of competitors to South County Regional Park in Boca Raton March 16 - 21. The main draw cutoff is an impressive 76 – compared to a cutoff of 114 for the March 1-7 Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic in Scottsdale, Arizona; 123 for the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis Telefonica Movistar March 1-7 in Acapulco; and 99 for the International Tennis Championships in Delray Beach (last spring). New signups this week for the Pro Tennis World Open include Nicolas Massu (13, Chile), Gaston Gaudio (34, Argentina) and Juan Ignacio Chela (41, Argentina). Other top rated players include Arnaud Clement, Thomas Enqvist, and Karol Kucera.

Popular German player Tommy Haas and American Jan Michael Gambill have already requested wild cards. Top ten players are still eligible for the tournament’s four main draw wild cards. Final selections will be based in part on the players’ results at the Tennis Masters event at Indian Wells, starting this week.

Tournament play begins March 16, with day sessions beginning at noon, and night sessions at 7pm. Semi-finals and finals start at noon (Saturday, March 20 and Sunday, March 21), but on those days there is no night session. Tickets are still available, with general admission tickets ranging from $10 to $15 and box seats from $20 to $30. Press badges can be obtained at the will call gate with presentation of proper press credentials. Daily scores and tournament updates will be posted on the web site www.protennisworld.com.

The website hasn't updated results yet and I know that Brian & Dmitry have to have already played. I would especially like to know about Brian. I want to know that he's 1-8 now and not 0-9.

I've never seen Ancic play...what is his game like? I was hoping Tursunov would get in a few more matches to get ready for NASDAQ. I keep thinking that Dmitry is going to break through in one of these tournaments....

I don't know too much about Mario's game other than he has a big serve. And I don't mean any dissrespect to Mario because maybe he played really well in that 2nd set but looking at that score it makes me think that Dmitry just got lazy again. That's one of Dmitry's negative qualitites. For no reason at all, he can decide that he doesn't want to play and the set or match gets away from him before he decides to start playing or not. It also doesn't help that he seems to be slow out of the gates and that doesn't help in a best of 3. He won the Hawaii Challenger this year so he obviously has the concentration for 5 matches. Now he just needs the desire and consistency  .

I'm curious as to why you say that about Dmitry?

My opinion of his game is that he is still figuring out how to win...I don’t think he is lazy. I think he still gets nervous and is still figuring out how to play his best tennis at critical times and close out sets and matches. And sure, he seems to get down on himself...

It seems to me that Jose Higueras is the first real quality coach he has had in his career. I think he may be behind some of the others in his age bracket (21) due to his lack of quality coaching…plus, remember, he basically lost a whole year with his neck injury. Up until now, he has gotten to the top 100 based on pure physical talent. But now he needs more...he needs to develop the mental side of the game to break into the top 20 or top 10...which I fully believe he has the gifts to do. I’m sure he is working with Jose to build this up…learn how to construct points better...when to go for it...when to play it safe, etc., etc. So, bottom line, when you are working on so many mental aspects of your game, you have to expect some inconsistent results...I think it is all part of the maturation process for him.

Bottomline, I'm not sure I would agree he is lazy. Certainly physically, he is in fantastic shape...I'm not sure how you can get in that kind of shape being lazy.

Do you have some personal insight to his situation that I am missing?

Ancic is a good player, hes got a big serve, but he also has a complete game. He volleys well and has good groundstrokes. And he's pretty cute as well

It sounds like you took offense to what I said about Dmitry. I like Dmitry so I wasn't mad at him because he lost exactly. When I see scores like that, I can almost guess at the type of match he played regardless of who his opponent was.

My "personal insight" is only this: I saw him play in person for about 5 days last year and I've seen a couple of his matches on TV. Dmitry can go away mentally and seem to have this attitude that he doesn't want to play. He still wins matches this way because he locks in just long enough to care again.

I don't deny that he has a lot of talent or I wouldn't have continued to follow his results after he beat Guga but the way that he chooses to play can sometimes drive me nuts!!

I'm curious to see how he goes out against Roko tomorrow in Miami. Hopefully, he doesn't go out there too laidback or have one of his slow starts again.
