2006 Review & 2007 Preview

2006 Review:

Not held.

2007 Preview - by Nathaliia:

Shortly about the event to come (blame my luck of time). Finally another African challenger! Next to Tunis and Casachallenger (I hope I didn't miss any of that huge amount of those). The presence of Moodie and De Voest doesn't surprise, but they are not the stars of the tournament. Mister "I am taller but crappier than my bro" Christophe Rochus is number one on the entry list, closely followed by Stefan "My yellow outfit is better than Nadal's" Koubek. Koubek in his present shape is one of the favourites to grab the crown, however you never know with this Austrian, and glorious by winning Chennai in doubles Big Dick Norman may try to apply for a singles victory. Oh, it was a joke, of course. Seriously I don't believe Dick is ever able to win a singles event of this level yet in his career. Probably except of local heroes and Koubek the other favourites are Udomchoke, who likes this kinds of events and hmm, we have two dark horses. One is Lamine Ouhab (don't tell about him the Polish DC team please) from Algeria, because he's from Africa and... yes, because he's from Africa. The second is Leonardo Mayer, hopefully with some prettier tennis than Florian Mayer. The born in 1987 Argie likes hard courts and in 2006 started to achieve some good scores backing his outstanding junior career. He avoided example of Brian Dabul and broke to top 250 quite early, now let's see how far he can go this year.

Very poor list for a $125K+H, but I guess it's because of South Africa's location. It's expensive to fly there and it's not close to any events.

No.

Mello played in Santiago and lost.

I don't know where abraxas got a Mello score from, but it certainly was not from Durban. Mello is not in Durban :silly: It's impossible (i.e. not allowed) for a player to play two events in the same week.

I really wonder who did win 6-0 6-4, but it sounds like someone was drunk :p

Hi, I am a fan of Austrian players as well... saw many of them in real life action on ATP/challenger/futures level - Koubek, Dani, Eitzinger, Haider-Maurer, Oswald.

Stefan is a talent in yellow clothes :rocker2:

I haven't seen K÷llerer, either of the Haider-Maurers nor Oswald, but I have seen Koubek, Eitzinger, Melzer, Marach, Eschauer, Peya and Knowle :)

if it was only that, it would be ok but I am in contact with luxembourgish media and I give them always the scores from the LUX players that I find. they were not happy that I came up with a wrong score

I understand

Just be sure to not trust scores that come from betting sites.

Stef defended his points from last year that is good enough for him and he got some matches already and will need to be at his best for DC.

The Big Greek had to fly to Delray Beach, he has a shocking tournament schedule, then he goes back to Europe and then the States again.

This year showed Durban would be a very fun tournie

As for Stefan and being sick, he was also sick in Szczecin in PL, didn't even attend the party (as the only player perhaps :haha: ) and lost in next round, so maybe that's true.

Dick confessed himself what he was doing, so no wonder he lost in quaters even to a sick Koubek.

Durban Daily News:

Koubek, who has property at Knysna, had jumped at the opportunity of playing in Durban - his first visit here - after he lost his first round match in the Australian Open in Melbourne.
top.DisplayAds('SquareL', 13, 2935);
Chances
He said that when they heard at an ATP Players meeting that the Durban Challenger Series was on he opted to break his journey home to Vienna and take his chances.
Koubek said that once he was eliminated from the Australian championship it made good sense to play in Durban and to fly home thereafter rather than making the long haul back to Europe.

Mathieu really needed this win with his abysmal ranking.
Frenchman secures SA Open title

Fleet-footed Frenchman Mathieu Montcourt from Paris defied his unseeded placing to become the first South African Open tennis champion at Westridge Tennis Stadium on Sunday.

He came from a set down to outlast a cramping South African Rik de Voest 5-7 6-3 6-2 in the men's singles final in the South African Airways backed ATP tournament.

The match was not without a number of incidents as first a ball boy had to be replaced in the first set because of illness and Montcourt was treated for a minor injury in the second set.

But worse was to follow. This time it was sixth-seeded De Voest who cramped badly midway through the deciding set and then all but limped his way through to the end of the match.

However, the Davis Cup man was the first to pay tribute to the Parisian, who at 21 is freely tipped to become a star of the future as he has solid backing from the French Tennis Federation in planning his development from his present world ranking of 219. He is currently ranked 18th in his home country.

It was a first win for Montcourt over De Voest in three meetings and much of his game was built around his skill in unleashing unplayable passing shots from all court angles.

Added to that an array of five aces when they were most needed to one by De Voest and a double fault credit of four to two which just about summed up the difference between the two players on the day.

The first set went rather according to plan for De Voest who three times had the set in his grasp before getting through at 7-5. The tennis played by both men at this stage was of a high quality with some really great shot making at the net and from the baseline.

However the Frenchman may have found a lucky omen after the seventh game of the second set when he changed his green shirt for a red one and then never looked back. He had breaks in the first, seventh and ninth games as it became noticeable that De Voest had lost much of his impetus especially after he had faded so badly in the all important first game of the second set to let Montcourt off the hook after the Frenchman was on his heels at losing the first set.

Indeed the South African will look back on two really poor service games in the second set. The heat of the day caught up with both men in the deciding set and once De Voest had felt a twinge in his left calf muscle it was clear that Montcourt was on track for his first ever major title on the ATP tennis circuit.

The third set saw no fewer than six service breaks with the South African conceding his four is successive games and slip to defeat at a venue that he had previously declared to be his `happy hunting ground' in the past. - Sapa

I was playing in the national club champs (same venue as SA Open) and staying at the same hotel with the players of the SA Open. Koubek wasn't well, had an ear infection as the rumour went. He only knocked up for a much shorter time than usual before his match with Rik deVoest and was clearly not feeling well. If he was fit he would have killed everyone in this tournament - he was clearly far superior to anyone else when watching the earlier rounds.

The players party on the beach ended by around 10:30 pm. We were all there it it was pretty relaxed. Btw, on most of the days the pros were at the hotel pool and not at the beach in the late afternoon.

The humidity and heat is excessive this time of the year in Durban - the discomfort index being over 40 degrees centigrade. A number of the pros were seen to be struggling with the conditions. Also, the last couple of days had quite windy conditions.
