Now almost everyone (maybe except Heman;)) will be scared and frustrated when seeing Roger is in his way. It's time to turn it round. Let's not be worried or whining if he draws Hewitt or Nalbandian or Henman again and early. It should be they who should be nervous. haha quite good feeling really:cool: ya I'm awaiting the draw. can't help being eager to figure out another one if it'll be at all out of his favour again.

Yep, you're quite right! Not only did Rogi win singles in Vienna, but doubles as well, w Yves Allegro... Rogi was the only male player to win both sgles and dbles in 2003!!

You know, Rogi had the toughest first round match in Dubai, and look what he accomplished -- not only did he overcome Maratski, but he won the title and became the first guy to repeat!

So... if a tough draw is any indication of the way our Rogi is playing, then who cares what it is... even if he gets Tim again... he might as well learn to overcome his final nemesis sooner rather than later...

Hey, HENMAN, the FINAL NEMESIS... sounds like a movie title... or a video game title... :haha:

i agree but with just going on statistics the odds of Hewitt/Henman (nalbandian pulled out) ending up in his half, let alone quarter must be huge. He has been drawn in the same quarter as Henman/Hewitt for so many tournaments now.

anyway good luck Roger! I got a feeling if he wins IW he will take Nasdaq off to rest/prepare for DC as #1 will be well and truly secure

lsy
03-09-2004, 04:09 AM
I for one still rather not see Hewitt's name on his draw. Not to mention Hewitt always does well in this tournament. Maybe I didn't get to watch their AO match, my memory is still painfully lingering on the DC match  (though that seems like past life now... :) )

But I agree Rogi has transformed since Houston TMC. In Dubai, he won all tie breaks even when he's down in set points and he had come back from a set down vs Lopez. I'm also glad to read his after match interview of how when things weren't going well, he will quickly do something different to change it. I like that he seems to be very confident but in the meantime fully aware of how tough and difficult each opponent can be. I hope he keeps up with this good attitude!

I will however like to see Tim in his draw though. If Rogi can get over Tim, that'll sure boast his confidence even more. Go Rogi!

yanchr

Hi lsy
We all know the background of that DC match, his physical condition, his then relatively fragile mental strength, the crazy home crowd, the overweight burden on him, their lethal double loss...Not making excuses for him but my conclusion is that this DC nightmare will never happen again..ok maybe never is not a good word, but at least probably and of course hopefully.

Hewitt...When I was watching their AO match when Roger was down the 1st set, actually I was not worried, I still had firm belief that Roger would come back successfully. Don't know why just a kinda feeling. Maybe Roger's calmness and coolness out there just managed to make me somewhat sure of that.Yes he always is ;).

I'm not worried if Roger should meet Hewitt again. But I'm also not saying that Hewitt will be a piece of cake to eat. He will always be a tough opponent for Roger and other top guys. I believe Roger will not ever take each victory for granted, esp. playing against someone like Hewitt, not to say Henman. Maybe playing Henman is a totally different story, where confidence will have the main say.

Again, all good to Roger!

lsy
03-09-2004, 03:24 PM
yes yanchr, I know the conditions in DC, just can't help it. That match left quite some impression on me...

Anyway, we'll see how the draw goes. I certainly hope Rogi for once since Houston can get an easier draw. But as I said I like Rogi's attitude towards his game now so I'm definitely more positive than before :)

Mrs. B
03-09-2004, 05:17 PM
it's in the luck of the draw and i think Roger should just face anyone, regardless if they're his nemeses, past & present, with a positive attitude. every match will be a tough one, but he knows what to do. we should also be realistic in the fact that Roger can't win all his matches just because he's #1.

still, a 12-1 record this year (so far) isn't too bad. ;)

Quite right, it is the luck of the draw, and Roger has done very well over the past few months, especially when he has had a tough draw (ahem, with a couple of minor exceptions ;) .

Statistically speaking though, what's the chance of him drawing one particular British player in his quarter five tournaments in a row (or six out of seven stretching back to Madrid)? Pretty small, I'd have thought. But I feel like wagering that he'll get him at IW too.

Since Henman will be seeded nine though (Nalbandian being out), he'll be matched up to Agassi/Schuettler/Moya/Hewitt in the 4th round...unless he gets Rainer, I don't fancy his chances there. But if he gets through, I think Roger can deal with it. He's done it with all the others, and it's only a matter of tim(e) :) .

Main draw is out, here is the whole draw: http://www.atptennis.com/en/common/TrackIt.asp?file=/posting/2004/404/MDS.pdf

Roger's possible opponent:

1) Pavel
2) Gonzalez (beauty against the beast? )
3) Fish/Novak/Ivanisevic
4) Hewitt/Paradorn (Hewitt in his quarter again...)
5) Coria/Agassi/Philippoussis
6) Roddick/Ferrero/Moya

WyveN
03-09-2004, 09:54 PM
well he gets hewitt in his quarter again (can't seem to ever draw someone like Schuettler) but it is certainly not as nightmarish as it could have been

Dirk
03-09-2004, 10:41 PM
Once he gets by the first few rounds which could be tough. I think he will be just fine. Hewitt poses no threat as long as Roger decides to stay in the match. Safin I really see beating Andy. I think Moya will make the finals. Agassi will likely be his semi opponent. Roger has a great chance here and will get only better as he goes deeper in the event. Roger won't skip Miami he loves it and he will have time if he wins to get ready for it.

Could meet Karlovic, also in 2nd rd. But except on Ivo's serve, possibly, he poses no threat. I agree Dirk, if he has a straight head if he plays Hewitt, Hewitt wont pose a problem for him. He has no weapons that could pose a problem for Rogi!! Good Luck Rogi!!! :wohoo:

Hi Rogicomel, it should be on star sports (ch.82) of astro, I normally check the schedule from link below so far it has been quite reliable :

http://www.espnstar.com/jsp/cda/sportsonair/tvtimes_legacy.html

In the UK Sky probably has coverage of the men's competitions, but since I can only see that at the gym and most of the matches will be the middle of the night here, guess I won't get to see any at all...

Never mind, spring (i.e. European swing) is coming soon ;)

Federer looks to have a pretty clear road to the quarters. Probably the only one who can beat him unless he has a horrible off day is Novak.

Gonzalez is to erratic and can't see Fish causing problems.

funny quotes from after match interview :)

Q. How would you describe the difference between Roger Federer the person and Roger Federer the player today compared with 12 months ago?
ROGER FEDERER: Today I won. Last year on this day, I didn't.

Wonder why these reporters never do any homework before they ask questions? Asking Rogi about setting up foundation like Andre not knowing he ALREADY set up one last xmas...

Probably a combination of Pavel having very little confidence and Roger playing well.

I mean Pavel must have been banging his head on the wall as soon as he saw the draw, your not exactly going to come out beaming with confidence against a opponent that has beaten you 3 times in the previous month.

Nice win Rogi!!!

Wasn't exactly a match I will enjoy watching if it wasn't for Rogi. Fernando really lives up to his "reputation". Hitting outrageous shots everywhere and missing most of them...I mean what is he thinking??? But Rogi was very composed and knew exactly to just play "enough" game, no overdoing of anything and just let errors flow from Fernando.

And come on now rogi, just close up the doubles match and get off from the burning sun NOW...

Found this quote today:

"I feel much more confident when I walk on court," said Federer, who has beaten the unlucky Pavel four times already this year. "I know what I got to do now. Before I was always going on court with a little doubt. If today doesn't work, I cannot win probably. Now I feel even if I'm playing bad, I can win matches. That is for me a big improvement I've made."

Yeah, you're not kidding Roger. Everybody should be running scared now. :bolt:

Q. How would you describe the difference between Roger Federer the person and Roger Federer the player today compared with 12 months ago?
ROGER FEDERER: Today I won. Last year on this day, I didn't.

well well well...another easy win for Rogi :)

What a disappointing performance from Fish, crappy 2nd set especially :( I guess that's the edge he's missing to move up to one of those top ones. I was definitely hoping more from him.

But even matches such as this, can always count on Rogi to pull off some excitement by those ridiculous shots he made. Did anyone see that outrageous backhand shot he hit when Fish put him so way off the court in the second set   ? Even Rogi himself raised his hands in amuse while the crowd applaud that :haha: I think Rogi really knows the way to frustrate his opponents ;)

Bring on somebody who's gonna play a decent match PLEASE!!! I want to see more of Rogi!!!

Glad you saw that, Blaze :) . It was out of the world then I thought maybe they will now consider extending the length of the net for shots like these in future :p

I think Fed is too generous when he decided that he would use this opportunity to practice with Allegro. Right now they still have one more set to go, and the match has been 1:20, which is already longer than any one of his single matches. I hope this won't hurt Rogi's singles matches later on.

Fish was really disappointing with all those stupid errors like what the old Roger always did. I didn't at all see Roger put on a great performance there. Except some flashes of brilliance. But when he didn't in a match? ;)

Roger on that shot:
That's just shots you only do in practice, you know. It's a low-percentage shot. On the practice courts, nets are further out, so you rarely get a chance. But you play with much more variety.
When it happens in a match, you're like, "Oh, geeze, this is on TV, in front of all the spectators. This is great." I would really like to see that one again on replay.

haha seemed Roger does always enjoy his own game and shots just like we do...kind of narsissitic

Midnight in Rogi's site posted these on court interview which I thought was kind of funny

1) Does it aggravate you that you're not that well known in the US yet? what can we do to improve that image here in the US?
Roger: I don't know, I just got to win, got to go to David Letterman, Saturday night live :haha: I don't know what it takes but I like playing in the States especially since Houston, so it's great to be back.

2)you seem almost too good to be true, what is the worst thing about yourself that you would like to share with us?

So Rogi has played Nadal in doubles now, but i would really like to see them play in singles soon.
I think the schedule for the rest of the tourney goes like this:
Wed: Bottom half plays 4th rd matches
Thurs: Top half plays QF
Fri: Bottom half plays QF
Sat: Semis; both sides of draw
Sun: Finals
Hope that helps

Well done Roger and continue your winning record against Chela.

Q. You mentioned how at the hotel people come up to you and say hello. That's understandable in a tennis setting. Can you think of the most unusual situation and most obscure place out of nowhere where someone has come up to you and recognized you when you were on holiday or hiking?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV."
That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked.
Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?
ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Mrs. B

Q. You kind of joked on TV about your popularity status here in the States, about Saturday Night Live and stuff. Does that really matter to you at all? Is that something you'd like to be better known around the world?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, that's the people say who is well-known, who is not. I don't know. What is my goal in my life? It's not to be walking down New York City and everybody starts screaming. It's not my goal in life.
What I'm doing is enjoying tennis. And if, you know, people enjoy watching me, you know, that is for me more important than anything else. I have very many people coming up to me, you know, where I'm staying around this week, which come to me and say, "I love your game. My son admires you. Your his favorite player." These are the things I enjoy hearing.
What it takes to be a superstar in the States, I don't know what it takes because I'm not from here. Only different people could help me to do that. So that's the situation.

"Q. You kind of joked on TV about your popularity status here in the States, about Saturday Night Live and stuff. Does that really matter to you at all? Is that something you'd like to be better known around the world?"...

Is he really that unknown around the world or it's just hhhmmm we know where...??? I remembered how Andre snapped at one US reporter (in Houston I think) who asked if he thought Ferrero deserved his ranking as it was last year (obviously what did she know about ferreror to ask that question)...

I could you countless examples of players who treated most of these people with the respect that they deserve. The names Muster, Kafelnikov, Rios, Stich are just the ones of the top off my head.

Does it actually matter to Roger if he is famous in the US? No, I don't think he gives a shit. I think he 's more interested in winning tournaments than whether he is the American media darling. If some people come around then good for him, if not it won't kill him, if he wins enough tournaments in the US, then some people might notice him.

It's not surprising but you already know my feelings towards this, then again if I was running the show, they would chuck me out. Seriously I am not just talking about China, there are other places as well they could hold it.

TMC Shanghai was great and it was only Agassi who complained about it.

And really, it's not a big deal that Roger's not that well-known in the US. Not many tennis players are (it's not considered a "national pasttime" sport here). You have reach Agassi-Becker levels to be famous here and it took them years to do that.

I was worried too when he was making many errors on the first few games, but Rogi did what he had said in interview lately. He had built up the confidence that he can win even if he's not playing well. Evidently he showed that. Then Rogi played a great second set. Chela was trying all the time but really just not good enough. Did you see Chela actually raised his hand to the crowd breathing a sigh of relief after finally getting a game trailing 0-5? Had a smiled on his face also...but at least Chela gave me the impression he was trying all the time till the end.

Well done Rogi!

Action Jackson

Chela was trying unlike Safin, but he was totally outclassed at least in the 2nd set Rogi lifted his game after a scrappy 1st set. Half the points Chela won came from Federer errors.

lsy
03-19-2004, 02:02 AM
I didn't get to see the Andy/Safin second set to compare. But clearly chela was outplayed in the second set. I'm surprised how Rogi can turn from a scrappy performance in the 1st set to that in the 2nd.

Though I hope he doesn't do that vs either Coria/Agassi in the next match, these players will have taken every advantage of that and before you know, it might be too late especially it's just best of 3.

Quite impressive performance by Roger in the 2nd set! That Chela's reaction on his finally hold just made me laugh...yeah he did nothing wrong and got nothing much to do..it's just that Roger was way tooooooo good LOL

Sorry to be thinking that Roger now seems untouchable ;) But good for Roger not to have thought so :)

Can't wait for the semi...either Agassi or Coria it'll be an exciting match..I do prefer Coria..Roger has never met him..I'd like to see how their matchup will turn out to be...

Yeah the Cup crowd at Houston was not happy but I think many of them feel in love with Roger. I bet George he gets a much better reaction this year at the Cup.

Action Jackson
03-19-2004, 03:59 AM
Hopefully so Dirk, but one thing at a time. He needs to be at his best against Agassi and make sure he really varies his serve and get that backhand up the line in order.

It would be good if he could win this event, but he needs to get rid of Baldy first, before anything else at the moment.

yanchr
03-19-2004, 04:02 AM
haha I'm expecting a repeat of TMC Houston..Roger frustrates both Balby and Andy (hope) to make the ignorant Americans aware of their ignorance though Roger doesn't care that at all and neither do I (sorry American fans here ;))

Dirk
03-19-2004, 04:05 AM
Roger's backhand up the line was off in the 1st set for in the beginning. Longer the match goes the better Roger gets. I am sure he will be ready for Andre. Roger knows how to rally with Agassi and mixing up the pace and giving him slices (with little pace) and the rest of his variety really throws andre off. Personally these are the two best returners on the tour. I think it will be the match of the event.

Action Jackson
03-19-2004, 04:22 AM
Hopefully Rogi can win 6-1, 6-2 then again some people will think this is lucky.

Seriously as long as he is prepared to work on his defensive play and manage to keep Baldy off balance then I think he can prosper, as Baldy isn't very good when you take the play away from him unlike Hewitt he isn't able to grind his way back into a match.

Usually the best matches in tourneys are not between the top player, in fact they are usually more boring for the majority.

There you go look who made the assumptions and look who was proven wrong.

Tim beat Andy today 6-7 (6), 7-6 (1), 6-3 (I love how these two always bash each other's brains out on the court  )

Tim is looking scary. I mean scary-good. Paris-kind-of-scary. I don't think Roger is going to win this tournament. :tape:

03-20-2004, 12:44 AM
Actually more than Paris-kind-of scary, tangerine.

But before we even start worrying about that, there's another big obstacle ahead. Andre is never an easy opponent to play with. But I really hope for a Rogi-Tim final, it will be great chance for Rogi to have another go vs Tim especially both seem to be playing very well so far, not to mention I'll get to watch it on tv.

I don't know, with the way Roger is playing I think he can beat Tim. But we are a long way away from the final.
Tim is known to choke matches he is expecting to win as well.

lsy
03-20-2004, 02:03 AM
One of the reason why Roger had been playing so well lately according to him is his confidence. If there's one player there who can take that away from Rogi now is definitely Tim. Tim is the only black dot on otherwise perfect record of Rogi since Houston and not to mention Tim's fantastic record vs Rogi. I believe that itself will play an effect on Rogi's game.

Nevertherless I believe it will be all good and we should be seeing some great matches ahead hopefully.

Good luck Rogi!

yanchr
03-20-2004, 06:35 AM
To tell the truth, I have doubt...I'm a little worried...Tim looks quite dangerous the way he is playing Andy...but I still want to see a Roger-Henman final. The more they play, the more chances for Roger to figure him out, the closer Roger stands to beat him.

lsy, you are right about the confidence thing. Even though I don't have full confidence in Roger's win, Roger should never lose confidence against Henman even if he is down. Roger should always collect himself, not get irritated and have firm belief in himself that he is finally to beat Henman.

But first we should focus on Agassi match...try not to take it for granted.

But his backhand is crap today and as stubborn as he is, still going for it even he knew it just wasn't working. No just kidding...I'm sure Rogi will look forward to play Tim again and you're right yanchr it's great to see him hang tough when it matters the most. If Tim had watched the Rogi/Andre match, I think he will be pounding all balls to that backhand for sure.

I think Henman has a totally different backhand from Agassi, which somewhat is similar to Roger's...but still Roger should no doubt make his backhand work at best just like in Houston. He is making many errors in his backhand these days including this AO though don't see it myself in this match. But could guess so from all the descriptions.

Now Henman again stands in the way...

Just Goooo Roger!

Dirk
03-20-2004, 11:11 PM
I think Andre's groundstrokes had alot to do with his backhand failing today. It was working much better in his earlier matches. I didn't see his Fish one. His Backhand was not this bad in AO. He hit plenty of bh winners there. He should be better tomorrow. He will work on his backhand for tomorrow. If Roger can pin Tim at the Baseline its over. COME ON NINJAAAAAAAA :worship: :bounce:

I thought this was a really flat match from Roger......what makes it amazing is that it was still enough versus a good player such as Andre.

Not only was the backhand not working but what frustrated me was that Roger wouldn't compromise and play the slice right until the very end. First serve also needs to work better against Tim.

Billabong

Well, in the interview with Andre, you will know why, because unlike other players, the slice does not bother Andre at all, and as the rallies get longer, Andre starts to get control with his consistancy and experience. I still haven't watched the match yet, but I am pretty sure Rogi knew that the slice was not enough to win him the game.

on the contrary of what you said, even though the slices did not work but if you watch the match you will noticed that Fed won majority of the long rallies.

Yeah, I haven't watched the match yet, so I shouldn't really comment... ;)

But I don't know, I would think this also helps Roger, because once he finds his rhythm from the long rallies, he can start making unbelievable shots. So, it's hard to say what to go for, there are advantages and disadvantages.

Congrats Rogi on getting to the final! :D But this match is an ugly one to watch imo, most of the points decided by UFEs instead of winners. As many have said, his BH is crap today. Hopes it will be better against Tim, he will need it since Tim is looking red hot. I am really nervous for tomorrow, it will be a tough challege to throw the last Gorilla(no pun to Tim's teeth ;)) from his back. Good luck Rogi, win the first TMS of the year please :bounce:

03-21-2004, 03:38 AM
But Dirk, dont you know how hard it is to keep Tim at the baseline?? The only was is for Roger to keep coming in behind his own serve, to S & V alot against Tim. But also Tim has shown his variety. For instance he hits a serve wide to the duece court, then easily put away a FH DTL the other way. He's hit some good Backhands as well, has has made some unbelievable Volleys, half-volleys. It will be tough, no doubt, but i expect Rogi to come through.

Just watched the match. Actually a disappointment for me. It was way way far from what they showed in Houston RR. The only highlight was how Roger managed to go through the BPs when down 3:4 the 3rd set by some normal winners and how he made the run to convert the seemingly irresistible volley from Agassi to a running forehand winner, plus some emotional C'mons from Roger, which is really seldom. He even missed some easy forehands that he should hardly miss, not to say his crappy backhands.

He should definitely raise his game not only a little bit esp his backhand to face Henman, who is obviously a more aggressive player with more variety and the could-be legal option of serve&volley.

Good luck Roger!

Action Jackson
03-21-2004, 01:11 PM
One he has to serve well, and get that backhand in order. He knows Timmy will be coming in all the time, so maybe not go for outright winners all the time on the 1st passing shot, put them low to his feet. Then take his chance on the next one.

Hit some heavier balls in the rallies, serve/volley now and then, test out Henman's overhead and attack on the returns now and then, try not to give any rhythm. Roger needs to win this one, so he can prove he can beat Henman.

I can only say wow...he's done it again.

This is the second time I thought things will be difficult for Rogi because of how well his opponents are playing, but he totally raised his game and make things look so easy. The 1st time I felt that was his wimby sf v Andy, and today is another one. As amazing as Tim volley skills, he only managed to win half those points at net!

Rogi plays his best match today throughout the tournament for sure and making only 5 UE! Tim was making many more UEs but I think that was mainly because Rogi kept pressuring him and took his game away making him to play more aggressively. Rogi's right again in his interviews before the match :"Well, I'm not going to start changing too much about my game. I think if he wants to win the tournament, he's got to beat me playing my game." He's really good at analysing not only his own game but also the others.

Well done Rogi!

He was on from the very beginning, not giving Tim any rhythm and putting pressure on Tim's fh worked. Roger's bh today was on as well which made things sweeter. Did u guys see that volley drop shot Tim made and Roger got so quickly to the net and put it away with that fab angle? fantastic. i also love that cc bh on the second set, 4-2, i think, where Tim comes to the net and Roger just gives it the right subtlety. super shot! painting the lines with his fh wasn't bad either. ;)
