Oh for sure I will.

If he was one of the next in, then he will play for sure, because Pat and Goran are listed and they aren't playing.

If he plays I will be sure to go and try and take some pics and write stuff down to remember :)

Scud poised for comeback

Four knee operations and counting, and yet Mark Philippoussis is back yet again. On Wednesday, the Melbourne native disposed of the world's No.19 player, Alex Corretja, in the Kooyong Classic, 5-7 6-4 7-6 (7-5). Suddenly, the return of the Scud seems a possibility.

Written off for good by many, the big Victorian may not win next week’s Australian Open, but the 26-year old Melbourne native could worry more than one opponent in his own backyard. He says his main ambition is to get as many matches as possible under his belt: matches, tournaments, Davis Cup, … Did someone say Davis Cup? Australia happens to face Britain next month and with proven experience that includes Australia’s win in 1999, Scud now hopes to secure his place.

While his body passed its latest test, last week a second-round loss to Rainer Schuettler in Madras curtailed the Australian's first tournament since he hyper-extended his suspect left knee at the US Open in August.

"Last week was my first tournament since the US, so it's definitely tough. I feel like every time I get injured it gets a little tougher mentally coming back," Philippoussis said Wednesday at the Kooyong. "Physically I'm still obviously getting stronger, nowhere near as strong as I would like to be, but as much as you train there is no such thing as match toughness."

With four operations since 1999 which now require regular jabs of synthetic cartilage, Philippoussis says nothing can phase him.

"I just go out and play like there's nothing wrong. I don't think there's something wrong with my knee, I'm fine now," he insisted.

At 26, the lost years cannot be recovered. But he can make the most of those that are left and has pledged to play February's Davis Cup tie against Britain in his first home appearance since the 1997 quarter-final against the Czech Republic in Adelaide.

For now though, the second singles spot behind Lleyton Hewitt is taken.

True, Wayne Arthurs has torn his calf, but it appears that he will have recovered in time. Arthurs is almost certain to play doubles at Melbourne Park next week and is rated a 75 per cent chance to play singles, for which he will request a Tuesday start.

Arthurs plans to hit his first points in practice this weekend before making a decision on his fitness. "There's going to be one or two days in it, whether he makes it or not, but he's getting better every day," coach Brent Larkham said Wednesday.

"He's feeling great, his recovery is going really well, better than could be expected. He's pretty positive about trying to play doubles at least, and he'll 100 per cent be right for Davis Cup.”

But a sure thing could quicly turn into a quandary for Davis Cup captain John Newcombe should Melbourne Park next week bear witness to the real return of the Scud.

Article on Scud and Lleyton.

US Open draw paints easy path for Hewitt but hard road for Scud
August 22, 2003

The pressure on Lleyton Hewitt eased a little yesterday when the former world No.1 received a generous draw for the US Open, which starts in New York on Monday. Unlike his Davis Cup teammate Mark Philippoussis, Hewitt has been given an excellent opportunity to play himself into much-needed form over the first week of the season's final grand slam.

In the first round, the sixth seed meets world No.84 Victor Hanescu, a 22-year-old from Romania who has played only 22 matches on the main tour and has done best on clay.

If he wins that match, Hewitt will face either Hyung-Taik Lee or Vladimir Voltchkov in round two. There is no "name" player in his path until Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan in the round of 16.

Srichaphan is the 11th seed and won a tour-best 40 matches on hardcourts last year.

Third seed Juan Carlos Ferrero looms in the quarter-finals, and should Hewitt advance to the semi-finals - as he has on his past three trips to Flushing Meadows - the 2001 champion would likely confront top seed and world No.1 Andre Agassi.

Other dangers in Hewitt's top half of the draw include unpredictable Russian Marat Safin, Sebastien Grosjean and two recent victors over the South Australian, Max Mirnyi and Wayne Ferreira.

Philippoussis, the 20th seed and 1998 finalist, opens against a qualifier but has landed in a rugged section of the draw that features Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, hometown favourite James Blake and in-form Argentinian David Nalbandian.

Philippoussis will probably play Russian Davis Cup hero Mikhail Youzhny in the second round and is on course to meet 13th-seeded Nalbandian in the third round before colliding with Federer in a mouth-watering Wimbledon final rematch. Seventh seed Carlos Moya is Philippoussis's projected quarter-final opponent, with tournament favourite Andy Roddick, the fourth seed, expected to be lying in wait for the semi-finals.

Hewitt, normally at his best on the US hardcourts, has had a poor build-up for the open.

He made a run to the final in Los Angeles earlier this month in his comeback event following a four-week lay-off after his first-round elimination at Wimbledon. But he has since lost to Mirnyi in the second round in Montreal and to Xavier Malisse in the first round in Cincinnati.

Hewitt has tumbled from the top of the rankings before Wimbledon to world No.6 and his 13 tournaments contested this year are the second-fewest of any player in the top 50 in the ATP Champions Race. But he insists his priorities for this year were the grand slams and Davis Cup.

While he has failed to progress beyond the fourth round at the first three majors, he has helped Australia reach a Davis Cup semi-final against Switzerland next month.

Fellow Australians Wayne Arthurs and Scott Draper have received tough draws, with Arthurs starting off against Australian Open runner-up Rainer Schuettler of Germany and Draper to play Moya.

Australia's top-ranked woman, Alicia Molik, has drawn a qualifier, and Nicole Pratt meets American Jill Craybas.

Molik has a great chance to reach her maiden grand slam quarter-final after being pitted in a section of the draw devoid of any of the game's current stars.

The road ahead: possible run through

flip_fan, :wavey: to tell you the truth, I am not really Mark's fan but this interview was quite amusing...and long and cheesy and extremely gossipy :p ...so I've translated some parts of it and put them into point-form.

*********

Flip was in Shanghai for 2 days to promote the Heineken Open this fall. He played 3 on 3 against the Oriental Sharks (?) and was capable of doing all sorts of stunts from lay-ups to reverse lay-ups to 3 pointers. In the afternoon, he also visited a tennis clinic in a university.

During the interview:
- he was eating spicy curry seafood soup and big-prawn curry rice
- he said he loves Southeast Asian food...especially hot spicy dishes and could normally eat two whole portions
- he gulped down the curry seafood soup and said he might try green curry next time since it's slightly milder
- he loves food with different tastes, but on court he's only after one taste - the taste of victory  :help: (cheesy)
- he was helping his representative from Asia (a middle-aged man whom he does not know very well) spread jam on bread :rolls:
- he was also promoting one of his most favourite beverages to the interviewer: a mix of green tea, cappuccino and cocoa and said he must go to Starbucks right away to let him try it out
- this just goes to show how kind-hearted and caring he was :speakles:

Dubbed the habitual "first-round loser" by the Australian Time Magazine:
- he was a collector of motorcycles...a man who was mad about speed...and an experienced surfer
- "I was young at that time and with the amount of money I was earning, I was only doing what people in my position would've done."
- "It was nothing to be proud of but neither would I regret it."
- "I've now learned from my mistakes and that's what life is all about."
- "At the moment, I only have a Harley and a Ferrari."
- "When you begin to realise what's most important in your life, these race-cars which gave me a lot of speeding tickets no longer appeal to me anymore."

On his 2003 performance:
- last year, he fired 48 aces against Agassi and eventually reached the Wimbledon final
- he coined this his "fairy-tale-like runner-up"...after having only returned to the circuit for a mere 2 months
- previously, he had spent almost half a year confined to a wheelchair
- in the Davis Cup final, he managed to come back from 2-sets down to defeat Ferrero :o despite suffering from back spasms
- he became the national hero of Australia and dedicated his victory to his home country

On his love-life:  (told you this is gossipy)
- his ex-Moroccan model girlfriend once described this ice-cool giant as "sweet"
- he never cared about what was written in the newspaper and claimed that it would be very tiring to keep track of every single piece of news
- "I was only involved in two serious relationships and both times I introduced them to my friends."
- he admitted that Delta is his current girlfriend, a 19-yr old singer who has recently recovered from cancer
- he admires her courage...and though he doesn't like her songs all that much, if someone asks him, he will proclaim himself her fan :hearts:
- during the interview, he was donning a necklace and a bracelet Delta had given him
- he admitted he had once dated Kournikova but it was only a brief fling
- asked about his thoughts on Anna: "She's a little bit mean (I guess jokingly) and asks for too much...that's all I can really say about her."

Regarding Pat Cash's criticisms:
- during the AO, Cash criticised him for not being able to stay focused and for getting distracted by the news of an ailing friend
- "Really? Is that what Cash said? That guy speaks too much."
- he asserted that what he appears to be may not necessarily be the real him...but felt that there was no need to reveal his true-self to everybody
- the only thing he really cares about is his family: "When my dad had cancer, I was reaching the all-time low in my career. I bought a lot of remedial things for myself and for my dad's illness. I can give up anything for my family." :)

On Rebecca Loos and David Beckham:  (told you this is gossipy)
- "Beckham is one unlucky guy." (apparently Flip and Beckham both signed a contract with the same agency IMG?)
- "I've seen her (Loos) a couple of times and heard that she's a bit of a trouble-maker. Don't be mistaken, there's nothing between the two of us."
- he kept expressing how sorry he feels for Beckham and commented that "One of them (he didn't say who) is just a wolf in sheep's clothing."

On Lleyton Hewitt:
- "Once during an interview, someone asked if the two of us grew a goatee, will we play better?"
- he claimed he was not really into the seemingly fashionable goatee but said: "If I really wanted to, I could always grow one. As for Hewitt, I think you might need to buy him some glue."
- someone suggested he write an autobiography: "It'll definitely be limited edition then. Besides, it's kind of hard to picture me sitting at a desk with a pen in my hand..."

On DVDs: :rolls:
- he wore a blank expression through out the press conference but when DVD was brought up, his face immediately lit up
- "Last year when I came to Shanghai, I bought so many DVDs they lasted me a good few weeks."
- he was amazed at how cheaply priced DVDs were in Shanghai (¥8 each which roughly converts to $US 1) and quickly shared this discovery with his dad
- this time around, the first thought that occurred to him when he got off the plane was to stock up on DVDs and he even brought along an extra holdall just in case
- but his two-day schedule was so tightly-packed he had to give up his only hour of rest on the second day to go shopping with his friends and translator
- ...and he was not at all disappointed...the DVDs were still priced at ¥8 each and in the end he spent a total of ¥250 (around 30 DVDs?)
- "I enjoy watching American action films...Chinese films aren't that bad either. My favourite past time is to curl up on a sofa with my mom and watch movies with Chinese subtitles." :)

*********

There were also 3 quotes from Sampras, McNamara and Kournikova but blah...I can't be bothered to look them up. :p

Philippoussis set to withdraw from Open

Victorian Mark Philippoussis appears almost certain to withdraw from next week's Australian Open with a groin injury.

The US Open and Wimbledon finalist has been undergoing intensive treatment in Melbourne with Australia's Davis Cup physiotherapist Andrea Bisaz after tearing his groin at last week's Hopman Cup in Perth.

But having already been forced to withdraw from this week's Medibank International in Sydney with the injury, Bisaz says Philippoussis is unlikely to recover in time to take his place at Melbourne Park.

"I certainly wouldn't put money on it, but he is receiving treatment," Bisaz told the Herald Sun.

If Philippoussis does elect to play though, Australia's Davis Cup coach Wally Masur told AAP he would not be surprised to see him perform well, after he overcame injury to lead the team to the teams title in 2003.

"He's a pretty mercurial character," said Masur, who admitted Philippoussis could be selected for March's opening round Davis Cup tie against Austria in Sydney, even though he has been badly out of form.

"No one doubts what he's capable of. One thing about Mark that just sort of highlights what he's capable of is that Davis Cup final. He had a tear in his pectoral muscle."

"When he finished playing, he had a lump the size of a tennis ball on the right-hand side. I've never seen anything like it. And he beat Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-0 (in the fifth set). It was an extraordinary effort." That kinda sux. Rest well.

oh well, id rather he recover properly, go back to new york and train with john MacEnroe and work on his fitness more. he's still not in top shape, could lose a couple more kilos...

if he were to play he'd lose before 4th round, drop his ranking badly and possible re-injury himself. I hope he makes the announcement soon.

he'll be back, if he's been through the hell of last yr and now this new injury and is still talking about tennis, it shows he's serious. if he wasnt he'd have given up by now.

:( not good news but get well soon Mark.

I think working with John McEnroe will be great for him. I think he needs someone to enthuse him as well as help with the technical matters.

Mark is playing the Harrah's Mens Pro Challenger in Mississippi on May 2nd. It has also been reported he's playing the Forest Hills Challenger May 9 - 14th.

Smart move for mark, he's taking his time with his recovery and also playing challengers to help get ranking points.

Cant wait to see him back on court, no doubt he's been working hard on fitness and his game with new coach andrew florent. :)

An interview with Mark:

Mark Philippoussis says the days of excess are over: "I'm engaged to be married, I've sorted myself out in the past year and all I'm going to be doing back in Miami is to train and practice hard on the tennis court and watch DVDs with my fiancee, Alexis, at home. I want to lead a normal life, like anyone else...I bought my first Ferrari when I was 20. Who wouldn't? I did a lot of things. I wasn't mature enough to handle the expectation -- and I wasn't ready for the commitment I needed to give to tennis. I bought a top-of-the-range Ferrari, then, two months later, I sold it. You wanna know why? I was bored. That's when I began to grow concerned about the kind of person I was. I was leading a vacuous existence. It didn't matter how many cars and bikes I had. None of it mattered. I realized none of that stuff was important. I had everything, but I had nothing. I wasn't happy. That's when I understood why. What made me happy was not just playing tennis, but playing on the big stage. Suddenly I realized how much I had thrown away. I feel so unfulfilled. I lived my life the way I've chosen to do so, but now I understand that I haven't put everything into tennis. If I were to stop right now, I would have let myself down badly. I honestly believe that the best years of my career are just beginning."

OK, to cheer up all Mark fans here I thought I'll post his interview after his loss to Marat. Despite the ankle injury he sounds quite optimistic. :)

M. Philippoussis - Day 3
Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Q. You had the ankle assessed. How bad was the damage?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: It's not the ankle. It's a ligament. I have to get an MRI.

Q. Any idea how bad it could be?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: Oh, it was pretty painful out there. But I'll see. I don't think it's going to be anything ‑‑ I don't think it's going to be anything too bad.

Q. Would it harm your chances of Davis Cup?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: I don't know.

Q. You put in all the hard work, you come up again, get another injury. You seem to have gone through the cycle a lot of times. How hard is it mentally?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: It's nothing. I mean, it's frustrating. But, you know, looking at those two tiebreakers, I have 5‑4, Love‑40, two tiebreakers, and I was up a mini break on each one. And, you know, there's the match right there. So it was nothing (indiscernible) the match at all.

Q. The sharpness of those big points, is that where you missed just from being absent on the circuit for so long?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: No, no. I mean, you know, like I said, the Love‑40 point, rallied. It's always easy to say you could have done something a little different in that point. But, you know, just missed my opportunity, simple as that. I had the opportunities but didn't take them.

Q. Do you think you showed enough today you could get back into the Top 20, 10 even?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: I know what I can do. Whatever you guys think, it really doesn't worry me.

Q. What do you think you can do?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: I know my best tennis is ahead of me. It's as simple as that. I know I've proven it to myself here. The eagerness is back. I'm just going to get stronger. I'm going to go back and work hard. This is nothing. I'm going to get over it. There's only more positive things to come.

Q. The last time you were on that court, you were in the final.

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: It's really nice to be back on that court. I always love that court. It was a gorgeous day today. Unfortunately (sic), next time I'll come under different circumstances.

Q. What were you having checked by the trainer?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: Ligament.

Q. Your right?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: My right leg, ligament coming from the ankle up to the calf muscle.

Q. Is that something new?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: It came up after my match, my first‑round match. I was an hour later walking around, I didn't think much of it at all, and it was painful from then on. Yesterday, it was painful. Today, I just thought I'll tape it, you know, I'll play through it. Unfortunately, it just got worse and worse.

Q. You put the losses down at the end of the sets more to whatever it is that makes you not play well rather than the injuries?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: Of course, it's nothing to do with the injury. It's simple as that. At 5‑4, I had Love‑40, opportunity to win that first set with set points, and didn't take them. Twice in the first two sets, had mini break up. Again, he got back into it. You know, right there...

Doesn't matter how you're feeling the end of your match, you got those mini breaks, those chances, you've got to take them.

Q. Are you trying to use that as fuel to get you back here in a better position next year?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: Of course. Of course.

Q. What is the short‑term in terms of the next tournaments coming up? Where do you have wildcards coming into or have you entered into?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: I don't know where I've got wildcards coming in. But the next one's LA. Leading up, you've got the Masters Series in Cincinnati, Toronto. So there's a lot of big tournaments ahead before the US Open.

Q. You're going to have to do qualifying at those?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: If I have to, definitely.

Q. Yesterday in her press conference, Eleni said her wish was to play mixed doubles with you. Has she ever asked you to play mixed?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: No. No.

Q. Do you think you ever would?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: I'm not one for mixed doubles. If I ever do, I'd definitely ‑‑ I'd play with her. She is a great girl. I was very happy to see her do well.

Q. What about Marat today? Were you surprised at his ability ‑‑ the consistency with which he was able to play, given we all know his preference isn't that surface?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: No, I mean, anyone who is talented, the guy is top five in the world, you can play on any surface, doesn't matter. With a big serve like that, it's going to get you into the points. He hits the ball well. He's volleying a little better. That guy is going to be tough on any surface, whether he likes playing on it or not.

Q. Did you feel like it was a little early for you to have to meet him in the draw?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: No. That's what happens. You know, you let down your guard, you lose your ranking, that's what you've got to pay for. You know, hopefully next year I'm coming in with a better position, put myself in where, you know, that won't happen again.

Q. You said after the first match that this was a good opportunity for you to get your comeback going. Where do you rate your comeback?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: Everything's going fine. Everything's positive. Nothing's negative. I'm not going to go jump off a bridge anywhere. Everything's fine, so...

Q. You worked with Andrew the last few weeks. Is that sort of going to be ongoing?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: I don't know. I invited Andrew along as a hitting partner more than anything, you know, to get me prepared for these tournaments. So we'll sit down and discuss that.

Q. I wanted to ask about the grass. A lot of players are saying the grass is getting slower every year. The head groundsman says that they don't do anything different. Is that your impression, that things are getting slower? Is that a disadvantage for you?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: The grass? I don't think the grass is getting slower. Some courts where some players think it's a little softer. But, if anything's getting slower, you would think sometimes they'd slow down the balls. But, no, I mean...

Q. Doesn't affect your performance here?

MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS: No, I didn't feel it was.

Wimbledon-Safin punishes wasteful Philippoussis
Wed Jun 22, 2005 5:40 PM BST

(Adds quotes, detail, byline)

By Bill Barclay

LONDON, June 22 (Reuters) - Russian fifth seed Marat Safin won his sledgehammer duel with Mark Philippoussis at Wimbledon on Wednesday, edging out the Australian 7-6 7-6 6-4 on Centre Court.

Safin displayed the opportunism of a champion in a second-round match of such fearsome hitting that at one stage early in the second set the net collapsed and had to be replaced.

Nothing could distract the often erratic 25-year-old from his task, however.

Philippoussis squandered three set points in the first set and Safin took it and the second set 7-4 in the two tiebreaks, having been a mini-break down in each.

Neither set featured a single break of serve but Safin, showing none of his usual dislike for playing on grass, nailed a break for 4-3 in the third thanks to a blistering backhand pass.

The Russian then bisected the court with his 20th ace on match point to complete a victory that suggests he is in the form to improve on his best Wimbledon performance to date, reaching the quarter-finals in 2001.

The Australian Open champion will play Feliciano Lopez of Spain in the round three and could face a quarter-final with third-seeded Australian Lleyton Hewitt.

Safin, who reached his first grasscourt final at Halle 10 days ago and is playing through the pain of a knee injury, was at a loss to explain why he was suddenly having fun on a surface he once detested.

"We don't know why a lot of things that happen in life happen when they do. I don't know how to explain it," he said.

"I am comfortable on it and I'm confident I can make some good results.

"It's important to have fun on grass. You have to play a game that is not really comfortable for you. If you are not having fun it's impossible to do anything good here."

DEFIANT PHILIPPOUSSIS

Grasscourt specialists do not come much bigger than Philippoussis, even though the 2003 Wimbledon runner-up was troubled by a foot ligament injury on Wednesday.

Injuries have been the story of his year. Ankle and back problems have hampered the 28-year-old and he has slumped to 142 in the rankings.

A defiant Philippoussis vowed to remain positive despite the loss and his ligament injury, which will require a scan.

"Everything is positive, nothing is negative. I'm not going to jump off a bridge somewhere," he said.

"I just missed my opportunities, simple as that. I know what I can do, whatever you guys think doesn't really worry me.

"My best tennis is ahead of me. This is nothing. I'm going to get over it."

That was unfortunate.  Mark lost to Grosjean 4-6, 2-6, 3-6.
Let's hope he won't be discouraged by this loss.

Scud falls at first hurdle

Australian Mark Philippoussis' slide into the tennis wilderness continued tonight as he suffered a first round Australian Open exit for the first time in 11 years.

The former world No.8 was thrashed in straight sets by French 25th seed Sebastien Grosjean 6-4 6-2 6-3.

The last time Philippoussis fell at the first hurdle in his national tournament was in 1995, although he has had first round losses in other grand slam events the French and US Opens in the past two years.

Grosjean made light work of Philippoussis' greatest weapon, his booming serve, breaking him twice in each set, including the first game of each of the first two sets.

Philippoussis showed slightly more resistance early in the third set, taking it to 3-3 on serve.

But he was then broken to love in the seventh game to give Grosjean the decisive advantage and capitulated by losing serve again in the final game of the match.

Grosjean said he was surprised how easily he handled Philippoussis' serve.

"I tried to be really focused on the serve and it's a little bit easier at night, the serve has less speed than during the day," Grosjean said.

"But I hit the ball very well and it surprised me a little bit."

The Frenchman's pace around the court and accurate passing shots made it difficult for the Australian to gain any ascendancy by attacking the net.

And Grosjean was also the more consistent player from the baseline, leaving Philippoussis struggling to find a way to dent him.

With Philippoussis having been regularly affected by injury in the past two years, his lack of much recent competitive play was clearly a factor.

He played just 19 matches last year, winning nine of them, to slump to No.165 in the rankings and needed a wildcard just to play in this tournament.

His loss tonight leaves four Australians standing after the first round of singles. Thirteen started the tournament.

yes. i dont know what happened in the 2nd set... im a little concerned his back injury might of flared up - it seems odd that he picked up his serve towards then end of 1st set, then all of a sudden lost 6 games straight...

i would love to hear his press conference. he needs to play challengers or qualifying rounds. its pathetic that mark or his coach hasnt realised this, and its even more pathetic that tournaments like IW and Nasdaq are giving them to him when hes done nothing to derserve them.

wake up mark!

Agreed. He needs to build his way up from smaller tournaments against lesser players to get his confidence, fitness and form back. Trying to play Master Series events just won't work. Wasn't his best result last year the SF result in Den Bosch? That was a weak draw, he needs to play in more of these small tourneys and slowly build his way back...

yep it was a small tournament and he was actually playing well for wimbledon until he hurt his ankle... so if he could just get some matches together im sure things will improve alot quicker. I hope he plays the bmw championships next week its the perfect little tournament to get some confidence and ranking points.

I think it was a bad move to play 1st rd when he'd been off the tour for 2-3 weeks with a back injury... he definately shouldve played qualies this week... oh well... the drama that is mark philippoussis continues....

flip fan where did you find the interview with comments about sickness and playing in challengers

I got the quotes from a news article....

At an event where all seeds received byes, slumping Australian Mark Philippoussis, suffering with chills and a fever, was bundled out by German Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-3.

The number 165-ranked Philippoussis, Wimbledon finalist just three years ago, was unable to capitalize after going up a break with points for 4-0 in the second set against his number 65 opponent.

Swirling wind from the approaching weather didn't help the 29- year-old's game.

"It was a tough day out there, I don't want to make excuses, but I was getting a fever last night. I had chills," Philippoussis said.

"I had my chances, but he got on a roll. He's a strong player but very unorthodox. He disguises his backhand well. He was better on the day. I don't want to take anything away from him."

but if you go to marks official fansite message board: http://com2.runboard.com/bscudcentral.fmainchat

all the latest on mark is posted there. Nick Philippoussis also visists and posts under the name Nflip... he posted today because he was upset about an aussie article that made up some bullshit about mark not playing davis cup because of money. Nick also explained the loss and said mark had the worst night before the Mayer match becuase he was ill, and his energy levels dropped as the match went on.

some news...

Mark will be playing the tunica challenger (Mississipi) next week, then the Forest hills clay challenger (New York) on may 15-20.

also mark has withdrawn from the french WC play-off. reasons are not yet known. It looks as though mark doesnt plan on playing the French open... he may very well spend the 1st week of the slam preparing to play the surbiton challenger.

GO MARK!!

Xristos u can check out some pics on the official site, be warned they are probably the worst pics ive seen of mark... he didnt shave and looks like a homeless man in some. Hopefully he has cleaned himself up for tunica!

nick philippoussis posted on marks message board:

"I just want to let know that Mark doesn't have any new injury, he is having his Sinfecs injections, and he is going back to Cal, to start fitness with Markus and also to start practicing for grass. He has to rest for few weeks after the injections where he didn't do them last year."

so it seems Mark wont be playing any clay challengers, just heading straight to california and start working with Marcus Heon. Marcus was the army trainer who whipped him into shape before wimbledon 2003.

Mark is a LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's fat, stupid, and everybody in Australia hates him for constantly ditching on Davis Cup. Hopefully, he'll blow out his knee permanently and that will be end of us having to hear about this loser ever again!

omg socket i think u have some serious mental issues!!! What have i said that is so bad about hewitt?? Do u even read my posts? I have said constantly i think hewitt and bec are nice ppl, I like them as individuals.. but poor PR advise are spoiling that. OMG SHOCK HOROR, HOW MEAN OF ME!

Im sorry as a fan u cant be more open with your views... i feel sorry for lleyton and bec because all the publicity isnt helping them, its detroying them. Sorry to break it to you hun - but most ppl in australia HATE HEWITT TOO! lol, havent u noticed?.. but then again hewitt is hated all over the world, so at least Mark is still popular overseas!

lol, mark isnt fat... far from it, he's got more muscle tone then hewitt - so i dont think u should be calling him fat.. and that stupid DC comment just confims what an immature twit you are so i wont even bother with that statement.. 99' ...03...

I hope that in future when Hewitt and Philippousis will not play anymore you will have other players to complain considering the not so good status of Australian tennis. In fact I think that both players reach some good achievements, probably Flip could have won more with his talent but considering the knees problems he got some good results; Hewitt probably got more than his talent but maybe all of you should love more actual tennis players than criticizing them. What are the future tennis players in Australia?

Kristen
05-10-2006, 02:05 PM
Mark is a LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's fat, stupid, and everybody in Australia hates him for constantly ditching on Davis Cup. In terms of tennis, yes, he is a loser (lately). As for being fat... that's what a 'built' tennis player looks like. You know, a 'manly' man. A few years older, more female fans to impress with his physique, if not his tennis.

He's fat, stupid, and everybody in Australia hates him for constantly ditching on Davis Cup.Nice way to generalise. Come on now, we all need an Australian player to hate. It's Mark or Pat. Lleyton does not enter the equation.

He's fat, stupid, and everybody in Australia hates him for constantly ditching on Davis Cup.Who was that imposter that played against Sweden, in Adelaide, 2004!? Granted, he played like crap. :o Maybe that also has something to do with DC representation. No, it can't. Must be him entirely. He thinks he's a great player but chooses not to represent because he has a fake injury, or enjoys spiting the public/Tennis Australia, who are big fans of his.

Hopefully, he'll blow out his knee permanently and that will be end of us having to hear about this loser ever again! At least then he would have an excuse. You know, what goes around comes around? It's not your fault though if you've got some dyslexic issues, or similar reading problems. Maybe if you took off your rose-tinted glasses you would see that flip_fan is not stating what a complete arsehole and horrendous father Lleyton is, but simply giving an opinion of one incident. Hmm maybe I should delete that. You probably think I just called him an arsehole/bad parent.

Hopefully, he'll blow out his knee permanently and that will be end of us having to hear about this loser ever again!Overall, it's a lovely post. I think I have wasted enough time on it. You are very kind to label him a loser, and not a deadbeat etc. At least, he is a loser - literally. But to be honest, I can't believe you stooped down to this *alleged* low level flip_fan is at, coming in here, doing what you think flip_fan is 'doing to' Lleyton. I love your sarcasm, but I thought you thought you were better than that dear.

He has such nice hair. I sound superficial, but what's not to like. I found myself cheering for him in Adelaide as I think you know , and one of my best / oldest tennis friends is a huge fan of his, so I've had to hear about him plenty. (Would definitely like to send him a Mach3, looking at the Bermuda pics). Hopefully he'll be around a bit longer yet, play some more challengers and cause a stir there. Get some confidence etc. I don't know how it works for the actual players, but as a 'fan' I'm stoked when my guy/s win titles. Oliver (avatar guy) won in Rome last week, and though he was ranked around 110, and his opponent was 259, I was elated. I will be happy for weeks.

Thanks for the info re. the clothing sponsor. I'm a little interested in those things. e.g. I always thought Nike make sleeveless shirts too big (or the players, minus Rafael/Mark probably) buy them too big. Mirnyi and Koubek practically swim in theirs.

Hi Xristos! Good to see you around MTF still. I haven't been in the 'Me' thread for ages. Too hard to keep track of . Will you be at the Aus Open next year? Peta Pan (Pavel/Ljubicic fan) and I have booked accommodation already WOOHOO!)

Ahh Steve, good guy! At least, he was quite nice the few times I'd spoken to him. It was nice to chat with someone who
a) knew who Oliver Marach was
b) could get inside his head a bit.

Is he based in Australia? It was the impression that I got, but then again... his name sounds Italian, and then you've got Alberto the Italian (Oli's trainer), and Oli spending a bit of time in Italy during the year. I look like such a spastic in this photo!
Click here for that day's blog entry. (http://bjorkmangirl.livejournal.com/4915.html) But I was pretty happy at the time!!! I'm so glad Oli won a tournament last week. It was time. And now, in the top 100. First time ever :D I knew I picked a good player. A bit inconsistent, but good! :wavey:

Oh... and, I prefer the shortish hair also. Like, still at that length that would be nice to run your fingers through, but short enough to not get in your eyes. Now I'm going to post a pic, for the sake of it... from the DC tie in 2004. Good times were had by me. My friend (the Mark fan) and I had gone to Adelaide to see this tie. Her #1 was Mark, mine was Jonas. It was a bit awkward  They announced that Instead of Robin Soderling vs Mark, it would be Jonas :tape:

So, I walked over to the other side of the stands, to sit with the Swedish fans :rolls:
Mark self destructed, and my friend soon joined me with the Swedes. She is a huge fan of those guys, so she wasn't ditching Mark... more like she wanted to get away from the asshole Australians bagging Mark for not putting any effort in. (Sounds familiar!) It was sad to see him lose the way he did... but I was so happy to see Jonas get the win, and secure the tie for Sweden :D

Where abouts are you guys from? I'm from Sydney... will probably miss the Adelaide tourney next year I think . (Depends on who goes!)

It's Rainer Eitzinger, another Austrian.
He was at Oli's matches, and he's a total sweetheart. He loaned my mate a shirt from his bag to keep her warm during the match :awww: But, it's probably the least flattering photo ever taken of him  (You can see alberto's hand on his bag...pulling him backwards ^_^

I agree :) One of the things I loved about Flip and Lleyton playing Davis Cup together is they are such incredible physical and mental contrasts (both on and off the court) yet both threw themselves on the line for their country when it counted. A great advertisement for how tennis is really a game for a wide range of people :)

In alot of ways mark and lleyton are like chalk and cheese... but i think over the years they have gotten to know eachother and have more in common then they first thought. I really hope mark can overcome the injuries and have a good grass season and force his way back in the DC team. Its not the same without him.

Challenger tourneys, thats fairly dissapointing why didnt he try get a wild card into the French

because he knew that would be a waste of time.. he is using the french open to get his fitness in top gear for the grass season. Challenegers are definately the right option - he is lacking match play and confidence.

No official news yet on surbiton but i hope he's playing...

new article:

Scud given Stella invite
Sportal

Former champion and Wimbledon finalist, Mark Philippoussis, has been given a wild card for the prestigious Stella Artois Championships in London.

The Scud, who won the Stella Artois title in 1997, was granted the invitation along with American Mardy Fish and 2005 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Feliciano Lopez, but the trio will have their work cut out for them as they enter a 56-man field containing six of the world's top ten players.

Fellow Australian and three-time winner, Lleyton Hewitt, will also be competing, along with World No.2 Rafael Nadal and defending champion Andy Roddick, while Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski and Andy Murray will be flying the flag for Britain.

Philippoussis reached a career-high ranking of world No.8, but the 29-year-old is currently languishing at No. 167 after enduring a nightmare few years compounded with injury.

He has only played a handful of games this year, but Philippoussis' big-serve is always a major factor on grass and the Melbournian will be hoping the 27-year-old tournament in Hammersmith provides an ideal building block to get his career back on track

shit.fuck.shit.fuck.shit.

That's horrendous. Exciting for the other guy, but :o :o :o

Do you think the papers will have much to say? Surely Lleyton (only Aussie male tennis player) is doing something newsworthy. My pick would be a court case of some kind). Hopefully Mark can get a win (singular, at least) some time this year. Fingers crossed.

he fucked up when he left peter mcnamara... despite marks knee injuries peter made sure he was prepared when he returned and started to really develop marks game.. mark was building up to his best form early 2003, despite parting ways before wimbledon - i do think peter played a large part in getting mark there. Since then he hasnt been the same. His game has fallen to pieces, his mentally weak despite his tough-talk press conferences... he's all talk. We have seen him go through numerous trainers/coaches/hitting partners... but nothing stable. Mark needs a coach. Nick is supposedly his coach right now - but from what ive heard wasnt at surbiton... mark is not roger federer... he needs a coach with him to help prepare.

I am still pissed off. Largely fed up with all the bs. But i know mark is feeling 100 times worse.. he's got to be hurting. If he loses 1st rd at queens he can kiss his wimbledon WC goodbye.. not that he really deserves one.

Yes, it is. Whats next queens? Hopefully he wins a match or else the end is near one would suspect.

seems that way doesnt it? certainly no shame in it if he does.. considering the amount of players who have retired this year mainly due to injuries... queens next week - will be interesting to see what draw he gets, no that it really matters if he plays the way he did yesterday.

Hopefully Scud can have a good Queens.

i hope so.. i mean in 2004 he lost to ian flanagan who was ranked 800 at queens.. but then managed to make 4th rd wimbledon the week after... im sure mark is very humiliated and angry at himself after the loss, so it may inspire something at queens... i have no idea.

Will Scud play that tournament again where he made the Semi Finals last year on grass?

^ i dont think so.. he would need a WC into the ordina open.. so have no idea what mark's plans are, will have to wait and see how next week unfolds.

The Scud will face big-serving South African Wesley Moodie in Round 1.
I think Scud can win this one.

Mark wins in straight sets! Moodie is not a great player but did make the Surbiton Challenger Final last week, so he was in decent touch and Mark ripped him a new one. Good win Mark :yeah:

IM NERVOUS AND EXCITED...GO MARK!!!

It would be soo cool if he made it to the Qfinals...he sounds pretty determinded, i hope he serves as well as he did last match. only 1 more hour!

L James

Come on Mark!! He must be in half decent shape to beat Grosjean. I assume this would mean he played some good rallies, where as beating Moodie was probably just a serving fest.

Mark lost the first set to Gonzo 2-6. But he now has 3 BPs early in the 2nd! Fight Mark!

Mark lost 6-2,3-6,6-3.

close match, particularly the 2nd and 3rd sets... mark had opportunities but couldnt convert. Its sad he lost, but i think 1 or 2 more matches under his belt he would've won this type of match.

Im thinking it might be a good thing if mark has to qualify for wimbledon - he still needs matche play. He seems confident about the prospect - so thats good.

But what will happen if he doesnt qualify?

Yeh I think he just needs confidence... Still disappointed though. I hope he doesnt play to do his best, He should be playing with the hunger to win.

I guess now that he doesn't have to qualify, he can play this tournament. He did well last year, maybe he can do it again :yeah:

bad news marks not listed in the main draw for ordina... now it seems things are fucked up... the last hope for mark is he gets some matches at the Boodles exhibition event.. agassi, haas, gonzalez, massu, blake and nalbandian are playing.. not sure if theres a spot for mark.

mark needs matches :(

Why isnt Mark playing Ordina??

flip_fan
06-18-2006, 05:33 PM
as it turns out - mark did get the WC into Ordina but has rejected it so he can play at the Boodles challenge. Im happy about it. Boodles challenge has a great line-up and mark is garunteed at least 3 matches!

the 2006 players:
ANDRE AGASSI
DAVID NALBANDIAN
JAMES BLAKE
NICOLAS MASSU
FERNANDO GONZALEZ
RADEK STEPANEK
TOMMY HAAS
MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS

............finally we know where mark is playing - not ordina, not boodles - he is playing the Marsh classic. He's got 2 matches against Nadal, and Nieminen.

I so wish i could watch mark play nadal - two of my favourite players, playing against eachother for the first time!

go mark!

Yeh Same here, my two faves, but im goin for Mark, I want him to have a tough match that he wins in a struggle, He needs it for his confidence and for his mental strength, if its an easy straight sets win its not so great cos it could be a one off thing, as a result of him simply having a "hot match".
