em no he wont be seeded he got a WC.The entry lists were made based on the rankings in Jan, I dont know what the cutoff was but Marat's shitty ranking before the AO wasnt enough to get him direct entry.

Jessi
03-06-2004, 07:36 PM
do seeds get first round byes?

Jessi
03-06-2004, 07:37 PM
i read that wildcards have a history of success here so lets hope the tradition continues with Marat ;)

 So there's a possibility of him being drawn against Federer first round again? YIKES! :fiery: But even if this is unfortunately the case, he'll beat Rogi this time! That match at Dubai was really close after all.

Shadow
03-07-2004, 11:50 AM
yes he could play Roger again

The draw should be out now, no?

The men's qualifying is March 10-11 (Wed & Thu) and the main draw starts on Fri 12. But, in answer to your other question, I think the top 32 seeds all get byes...not 100% sure about that though. So, in actual fact the main tournament is almost just like the normal 1 week tournaments, just a bit more long-drawn out  ...urgh I don't like these American tournaments cos the time difference is so bad

And tv coverage sucks here :fiery:

thanks very much TommyRGirl. Can't wait for the draw to come out and play to finally begin.

as for the time time difference, there isn't one for me as Indian wells and Vancouver are in the time zone so no 3am sb watching for me :woohoo: Coverage otoh is lame as usual.. 2 hrs/day of taped coverage

Yes, sorry I forgot to mention that the draw would be done on Tuesday!
We get no coverage of any Masters Series here :crying2: :hysteric: ...only Davis Cup (when Australia's playing) and Grand Slams *sigh* hopefully the coverage in Spain will be better...

maratski
03-08-2004, 01:14 PM
You have eurosport in spain so your coverage of GS tournaments and non TMS events will be ok I think.

Jessi
03-08-2004, 09:09 PM
just read that Dave is out of IW because of injury. Will this have any effect on Marat's seeding?

Kiara
03-08-2004, 09:16 PM
No he still stays a WC

Jessi
03-08-2004, 09:19 PM
i know but as a wc he could still be seeded, right? THis is all very confusing.

Kiara
03-08-2004, 09:26 PM
no...wildcards arent seeded

maratski
03-08-2004, 09:33 PM
You CAN get seeded as a WC since seeding is based on current rankings.

Jessi
03-08-2004, 09:33 PM
According to a poster on Christine's Forum, wildcards will be seeded.

MARAT WILL BE SEEDED. Seeds are based on the MOST RECENT Entry System ranking (in this case, March 8th, see inside. Marat is 32). The DIRECT ENTRY LIST for Indian Wells was based on the Entry Rankings 42 days before the tournament (which was before the AO) and Marat was not in the Top 79 at that point. That's why he needed a Wildcard to get in, but Wildcards can still be seeded.

Kiara
03-08-2004, 09:36 PM
so why wasnt he seeded in dubai?

maratski
03-08-2004, 09:40 PM
Cause the top 8 seeds there were ranked higher then him.

Kiara
03-08-2004, 09:41 PM
oh ok , dumb question I figued out the answer myself ....duh...and Marat is ranked 32? really? :woohoo:

Jessi
03-08-2004, 09:43 PM
yes, 32

he has 75 pts to defend as he made it to the 3rd rnd last year

Kiara
03-08-2004, 09:43 PM
so he will be what?the 32nd seed? and he'll get a first round bye? :woohoo:

maratski

I got a question guys should I post the article from a tourney in the tourney thread or in the general article thread?

Safin in good company (Eurosport)

Indian Wells director and former pro Charlie Pasarell announced a healthy mix of young and experienced players as wildcards in the first Masters Series event of 2004. Australian Open finalist Marat Safin joins Alex Corretja, Thomas Enqvist, Tommy Haas and Alex Bogomolov amongst those gifted direct entry.

The tournament has awarded a total of nine wildcards: five into the main draw and four into the qualification competition which starts on Monday 8th.

"I've never seen a wild card list with so many outstanding, recognizable and accomplished players," said Pasarell.

"Together, they've won more than 60 titles, including 10 Tennis Masters Series events."

Among the most accomplished players on the list are Enqvist, who has won 19 career singles titles, including three Tennis Masters Series wins, and Corretja, winner of 17 crowns, three of them in TMS tournaments.

"We have a great history of success with our wild cards," added Pasarell.

"I remember giving one to a guy named Sampras one year and another to a guy named Courier, before anyone really knew who they were.

"Next thing you know, they're winning Grand Slams."

How soon we forget Marat's AO draw. ;) Now *that* is what i call a tough draw and look at what he was able to do...with Marat its always a case of him being healthy and motivated. He's had a bit of break so lets hope he's feeling fresh, rejuvinated reenergized and hungry for his first title win.

Marat's possible showdown with Andy is the top headline on atptennis.com!

Roddick & Safin Set for Showdown in Indian Wells

Andy Roddick and Marat Safin are on a collision course at the Pacific Life Open after Tuesday's release of the singles draw. Roddick and Safin – who played an epic five setter in the Australian Open quarterfinals, won by the Russian – will meet in the third round if they win their first matches. (Both have byes in the first round.)

Andre Agassi could face a dangerous third-round match with Dominik Hrbaty. The in-form Slovak leads Agassi 2-1 in career meetings and he leads the ATP with three titles this season. In tough first-round matches, Thomas Enqvist meets Tommy Haas and Todd Martin plays Goran Ivanisevic. Qualifying begins Wednesday and main draw action starts Friday.

Another article from Indian Wells official website.

Andy Roddick and Marat Safin could be in line for a third round blockbuster at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, as the draw for the men’s singles championship threw out some mouthwatering clashes.

With all Top 32 seeds receiving first round byes into the second round, Roddick, the No. 3 seed and Safin, seeded No. 30, could set up a repeat of their Australian Open quarterfinal if they both win their opening matches.

Safin, who received a wild card into the Pacific Life Open, could meet fellow Russian Nikolay Davydenko in his opening match, while Roddick could take on fellow American Jan-Michael Gambill.

Safin, who won the quarterfinal against Roddick in Melbourne, went on to reach the final at the Australian Open before losing to current INDESIT ATP 2004 Race leader Roger Federer, the top seed in Indian Wells. Safin also won his only other previous meeting against Roddick in Los Angeles in 2001.

Roddick and Safin lie in the bottom half of the draw and could meet either Rainer Schuettler, the No. 6 seed, or former finalist Tim Henman in the semifinals.

Federer, whose best performance in Indian Wells came in 2002 when he reached the third round, lost to Gustavo Kuerten in the second round and has another tough road ahead of him this year if he is to claim a second ATP Masters Series shield.

The 22-year-old Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, who is 16-1 this year and has won 21 of his last 22 matches, will meet either Ivo Karlovic or Andrei Pavel in the second round, with Fernando Gonzalez, Jiri Novak Mardy Fish, Paradorn Srichaphan and two-time defending champion Lleyton Hewitt all in his quarter of the draw.

Actually I think that is more likely to happen then Andy and Marat having another great match like they had in Austrialia.
In the tourneys where the seeds have 1st round byes it seems like more of them lose their 2nd round match than when both players are playing their 1st match of the tournament.
If both of them make it thru the 2nd round (which i doubt) and play each other it will probably be a very crappy and one side match, having 2 epic battles back to back just doesn't happen very often.
Hopefully I'm wrong and it's an awesome match but...

It's just the media blowing it up to be an epic battle, I agree Nicki, it could end up being completely one sided and one player dominating the other, who knows. I hope they're both fit and have a great match whatever the outcome may be .

And yes having a first round bye can indeed work to your disavantage especially if you havent played in over a week. Your opponent has already played one match more than you and is going to have that feel-good after winning their first match plus has had a chance to get acclimatised to the conditions and has gotten the jitters out of their system. So both Marat and Andy are at a disadvantage but I see it as highly unlikely that Marat will lose to the winner of Nikolay v Q.

Gambill, on the other hand could very well trip Andy since he's done it before...twice, both times in America, both times on the HC and had a close match against him in Scottsdale. Also from what I gather Andy is injured  ....so who knows he could withdraw/retire or lose to Gambill [or the quali who beat Jan-Mike (kekeke  ) ]

There is little point in salivating over somthing that might not happen.

But Ive already put my money on both of them getting past the second round.

If they do Andy will no doubt be the darling of the crowd, unlike in Aussie where the crowd was predominantly pro Marat and that will assist Andy and rile Marat more than anything ;)

I don't know what to think of the draw. People (read: media) hype it up, but all we can do is wait and see. Marat is in my heart and I ALWAYS root for him, but I don't like to get my hopes up yet. Let's see what round 2 will bring first.

Well, he came close in 2000 when he beat 2 americans back to back on his way to the title. Replace 3 of the other 5 names in his draw with americans and voila! ;) I mean, if he could beat the two most experienced and dangerous american players he could've faced in Martin and Sampras with relative ease then i don't see how he couldn't beat 3 more of lesser quality as well. Its only because if his draw that it didn't happen. ;)

yes true, but those matches the final and the semi, I mean he steamrollered his way through both Sampras and Martin he didnt even drop a set, but his AO matches were so close especially the ones against Andre, Andy and Todd Martin they couldve gone eitherway, the USO crowd can be relentless...lol and I wouldnt call Andre a player of "lesser quality" ;)
ditto Andrew ;)

Jessi
03-11-2004, 01:16 AM
Thats precisely my point. If he could routine Sampras and Martin in straight sets in important matches on centre court with the crowd firmly against him then whos to say he couldn't beat 3 other americans in earlier rounds on smaller courts. ;) Andrew was definitely a player of "lesser quality" in 2000 and Marat would have schooled him had they played. I believe Andy lost in the first rnd that year.

and her report. what a lucky girl! :)

So we started off the day pretty early. We figured Marat had to be coming in finally last night and that we would see him today. We basically hung out in the outdoor players restraunt area because all the players had to walk through there from the players lounge in order to go to the courts and eat etc.

All day long I was stalked by Llegs, Tommy Haas and Feliciano Lopez! :) I saw them EVERYWHERE! *lol* Now that I did not mind! :) My friend does not like Llegs so she thinks I have cursed her. lol. I was terribly happy to be sitting amongst them all day.:) In fact, Kim was sitting at the table right next to me playing cards with her coach, and Llegs finally came and stayed for a bit, then left, then came back etc. He finally sat down basically right next to me and I was in heaven. lol

Also, Tommy Haas was everywhere, and boy does he look great. I think he even grew a bit taller than the last time I saw him. His hair is longer too. At one point him and Feliciano Lopez were standing next to each other, and I thought I might die. :P

We eventually saw TOmmy going out w/his racquet bag, so we decided to wait about 20 minutes for him to get all good and sweaty and go take some pics of him. :) Right after he left, F-Lo left w/his racquets as well. Then Jan Michael Gambill, (who Fiona has me on the lookout for). We went to find Tommy, and it turned out he was practicing with Jan Mike, so Fiona got lucky and I took some really nice pics of him. (hopefully all my pics will turn out as good as I hope!!). From where we were sitting, I could also see F-Lo doing some excersizes over on the grass. :) He finally came to the court right behind where we were sitting, so I was able to stay in one spot and take photos of all 3 of them. :)

It was gettin really hot in the sun, and I was tired of looking at Jan Mike (sorry Fee LOL) so we decided to take a walk back towards the players restraunt. We ended up sitting down on the grass to watch some players kicking around a soccer ball. All of a sudden, I look up, and about 20 feet from me is Marat, walking down the hill, wearing a red t-shirt and being chased by kids for autographs. He is literally the ONLY player I have seen being chased down by fans so far. It took me a second to realize it was him b/c his hair is really long! But I know that lumbering walk anywhere.LOL. So we knew he was on his way to practice, with Walt and Denis not far behind.

I told my friend to wait there so I could run and use the bathroom before we went to watch him practice. I also had to grab my backpack out of my locker b/c it had the message book in it. So I ran off and was back in 5 minutes. We walked over and saw where he was practicing right away. We found a spot and I started taking photos. I was also debating the best way to give him the book with the messages, wether to do it right after practice or wait until he came back to the players area. I decided to wait as I really wanted to get a photo taken. Also, I have never had my photo taken with him. :) So we stayed around for about 40 minutes. He was hitting with Olivier Rochus (I think! I can't tell the Rochus boys apart!) They seem to be pretty good friends now. Denis was on the court w/him and Walt was standing right next to us.

He seemed in a really serious mood. No laughing, no joking etc. He practiced his volleys a lot, and they looked great. The rest that I saw they were just hitting ground strokes. If he practiced his serve it was after I left. After I took about 2 rolls of film, we decided to walk back to the players area so we could be waiting for him to return after practice, rather than chasing him down like mad fools.LOL. So we left the practice early and went back. Apparently, there was something going on that Marat was not happy about. I'm not sure if it was the practice court, lack of time, time of day or what. We also overheard part of a converstation that he may come back later to practice.

So we left and went back to the lounge area outside. It was very hot! Finally after about 20 minutes, Marat finally came. We called him over to the table we were sitting at. He came over and my friend spoke to him briefly. I then told him that I had something to give him. He perked up a bit and said "ok!" (lol) Just like a kid. I pulled out the very heavy book and kind of showed it to him, and told him it was full of messages from his fans. He seemed a bit confused, but I'm sure once he looks at it he will love it. I asked him if I could get a photo of me and him w/the book and he said "of course" :) He even smiled. I could tell he was not in the best mood though, and I felt kind of bad bothering him, even if I was giving him a gift. (he's probably cursing me b/c it was so heavy!) LOL

So he put his arm around me for the pic. (joy!) I was trying to put my arm around him but his darn bag was in the way. LOL I finally found a small space right in the middle of his back and slid my hand in there and held firmly to his sweaty back. (yes my right hand my never be washed again) LOL j/K. He was holding the book down and I asked him to hold the book up so it would be in the picture. (lol) he put it up and out in his right hand, but it was not really up that high, so it may not have gotten into the picture she took. She was zoomed in and had to make us move back (lol) yes arms still around each other the whole time :)

So then I said "Marat, you have to smile really big like this is the best present you have ever gotten" (lol) so he did put on a nice big smile, and Maryann should be pleased to see the nice photo of his perfect teeth one day! (lol) My friend took 2 photos (I had told her too earlier to make sure they came out!!) I have no clue if the book made it into the photo, and after that whole lovely encounter I really don't care. LOL Rest assured he has the book, with all the messages, and he will probably be looking through it laughing w/Denis at some of the stuff in there. I think he will enjoy it and hopefully it will put him in a better mood!! :)

After that, we saw Denis roaming around here and there. We never saw Marat again, but I think he was in the players lounge relaxing (maybe reading the book) and eating (Denis came and got food and left w/it). I think he was going to practice again later on (maybe around 5 or so) but it was really hot and there was nothing else going on, all the players were pretty much gone for the day, so we decided to go ahead and leave.

Fiona told me that her friend happened to ride over today w/Denis. He was apparently talking non-stop and told her Marat's whole life story. (lol) He told her that Mrat has really changed a lot, was in a very serious relationship and had settled down a lot. THis is second hand information, but I will get the chance to meet her in the next day or two, and will get the info directly from her. Apparently she is tall, blonde and really cute, so that may explain why Denis was baring his soul to her in the car. LOL

I'll check back in tomorrow with another report. :) Hope you all enjoyed this one! I'm having a great time!

:wavey: Safinetts and ites.

Just wanted to say that I saw Marat practicing last night in the twilight. There were no crowds at all around him. Probably no one had seen him there. He was practicing with a short blond guy that at first I thought was Christopher Rochus, but he spoke Russian so I knew I was wrong. Safin was practicing serve and volley while I was watching. His girlfriend... who looks tiny!... was sitting in the bleachers to the side. It was all low key and good natured as the blond guy was joking around with Marat.

:wavey: bye.... if I see other little things, I'll let you know.

He couldn't have practiced with Davydenko before their possible 2nd RD match, could he? Or was it Misha? He has very short light hair. Had the guy a very short haircut? Tursunov or Andreev are not that blond but who knows. I hope you enjoy yourself there, star! :wavey:

he could have practised with Davydenko, too. Why not. I think it might be him.

That could have been Davydenko, 'cause he definitely matches the description best I just wasn't sure if that's common to practice with your next opponent. Marat is so kind and nice really! :)

No Im saying the five setters he played against Andre, Andy and Todd Martin, had those matches been at the USO would he have been able to pull them out in the fifth? if the whole crowd was rooting against him?Same match, different venue, same outcome?

and the report :) (thanks heaps Christine)

hi all! Just got in from watching Marat practice. :) He came out at 1pm and hit with Big Al (Costa) for an hour. They were playing lots of hard points and Marat was in a MUCH better mood than he was yesterday. Guess he demanded that court for 2 when he wanted it and got it. lol. He looked great, I took about 3 rolls of film (the best on film, not digital) and it was very hot. Another funny thing is while my friend and I were sitting there and I was taking photos, Walt came and sat right in between us and started talking our ears off. *lol* He asked me if I was a professional photographer and we said "yes" (LOL) He was rambling on about God knows what, and my friend was humouring him while I took photots. He was asking us some questions about digital cameras and camera phones, and told us how much he hates Sprint (lol) then he started some story of suing somebody, but I was too busy photographing Marat and was not listening. :) Marat looked over at us (before Walt came) and gave me a few really nice smiles. I think it was because of the book. I know he recognized me (I am very recognizable) and I think he was doing that so I could make sure and get some nice pics. :) So he was in a great mood today! his serves started off looking a bit wild, but then he was nailing them. he was nailing all of his strokes and even did a hotdog shot as well as a few of his high kick jumping backhands. :) The crowd watching was loving it and it was much more interesting than any matches going on! LOL. I'm off to update menstennisnews real quick and then I'm going to run down and get some lunch. If I'm lucky I'll see him roaming around later on. :)

Marat plays Jan Hernych a qualifer from the Czech Republic.
They haven't played before, heck Hernych has barely played any atp event matches (he has mostly played challenger events) before coming to Indian Wells

Very short hair. :)

But not shaven or anthing like that. Just short and normal and combed with a side part.

I think these guys practice together so much.... particularly players of the same nationality, that they don't really have anything to hide about thier games. Everybody knows the games of the top guys. Particularly at times like these whey there are so MANY players needing practice courts they grab what they can. That's why it was smart for Marat to have a court at that time... no one else was out, and there weren't hordes of people around him. Andre was practicing on a court with three other players on the same court practicing. So was Andy. Everybody is all mixed up and the languages are all mixed up and I love the way the men hit and practice together without any sort of animosity and most of the time with a lot of good will and fun.

merle
03-13-2004, 03:47 PM
Ah I see, so it probably really was Davydenko also needing practice before hist 1st RD match that he still lost to Hernych. Davydenko hasn't been doing well lately. I hope Marat can handle this Czech guy! Come on, Marat! :clap2:
Thanks star and enjoy! :wavey:

Andy was asked about Marat in his interview today. I think the questions came from a Tennis Mag reporter who's doing a feature on Marat.

Q. Back to Safin for a second. Coming off of Australia, what are your thoughts here? Were you surprised by his improvement, his concentration there?
ANDY RODDICK: I don't know about improvement. I mean, when I hear that question in regards to Marat, he was a pretty good player before he got hurt. I mean, you know, he's been No. 1 in the world before. So I don't know if it's some vast improvement that all of a sudden he come out and shocked people.
I was impressed, he had a lot of tough matches. It just showed that he put in the work in the off-season physically which probably helped him mentally. Yeah, that was very impressive.

Q. The word in the locker room is always, "Hang in there and there will be a lapse of concentration at some point from him." Is that maybe no longer true?
ANDY RODDICK: I don't know. I mean, obviously he did something to prove that notion wrong in Australia. The knock on him was that maybe he'd take days off sometimes.
But so far this year, I mean, he hasn't played too much, but at the Aussie Open, he definitely was the exact opposite.

Christines report from the match and the press conferrence :D :D -->

First off, sorry I did not make a report yesterday. It was a long day and everything was a blur. Then we went out to the player's hotel for drinks last night and I got a bit loopy and forgot everything that happened. *lol*

I reported about Marat's practice and I guess that was the most important thing. As for matches, I watched Hewitt/Johansson then ran to the Philippoussis/Youzhny match which was the match of the day imo. Youzhny was sooooo impressive with the way he played. It was an amazing match!

I also watched Robredo's match earlier, and I was upset that he lost, but I did get some great pics of him. :)

As for today, I am back at the hotel at a decent hour and am staying in tonight. It was a scorcher today and the heat just made me really tired. Too tired to even hang out at the player's hotel for cocktails. *lol* Last night there was some real estate convention and they had taken over the bar. It was a nightmare. The only player I saw in there was Mario Ancic. *lol*

So we got an early start and had breakfast at the player's hotel. Guga was there, along with James Blake and Big Al Costa (who is totally stalking me b/c I see him everywhere!) ARGH!

I haven't seen much of Tommy or Lleyton around since the main draw started playing, but then again, I have not been hanging out in the player's restraunt area as much w/nothing to do because I have been off watching matches and doing media stuff, typing reports, uploading photos etc. lol

Anyway, first thing today I went into the stadium to watch Roddick/Gambill. Everyone I was with wanted to watch it, and Fiona was with me and we wanted to get some nice pics of both guys for the news site, so we were in the photo pit the entire match. Fiona is upset now that Gambill is out. I hope she gets over it so she is not depressed all week b/c I have to hang out w/her! lol

So after that, I went up to the media room to sit in the air conditioning and cool off. I ended up talking to Bruce from Tennis Magazine for about 20 minutes. He was showing me some of the quotes about Marat he's gotten from some of the players he's talked to. I wish I could get my hands on that list, but I think it will all be copyrighted to him and Tennis Magazine. Hopefully they will publish a lot of that when the feature comes out. I asked him when it would be out and he has no idea.

He asked me a few questions about Marat's mom and a few about Dinara. I gave him a card and told him to call me if he needed to talk anymore, and I also hinted that it would be great if he could mention safinator in his article. *lol* He was asking me about the site, and asked me if Marat knew about it. I told him that he did now! I told him about the postcard book. (lol)

He was also interested in the calibur of the fan sites out there, and said he never realized how many there were and how good they were. I told him how many hits my site gets etc.. and he was just amazed. He also was interested in knowing why I decided to start a site for Marat of all players, and I tried to explain that to him. It's hard to put into words though. I did manage not to mention the fact that he's hot. LOL

I also told him about the messageboard, and that everyone here posts all the latest news etc, and he was impressed by that and said he would check it out. :)

So by the time I finished talking to him, I had forgotten to meet my friends and they were off doing something else.

Bruce told me that Marat was going to practice at 2pm so I had an hour to get caught up on uploading photos etc. here.

I went to Marat's practice, and like I said, he hit with Denis for about 30 minutes. I was glad b/c it was so hot I could not stand the sun anymore.. and neither could Marat I think!!

I had planned on watching Federer/Pavel, but it was over so quickly I missed all of it. *lol* Then it was time for Marat's match! We went in to get our seats (a bit late) and the players were just coming onto the court when we got to the photographer's pit.

I chose to sit on the side w/the shade so I wouldn't burn up, but my friends were sitting in their boxes on the opposite side. I told them I would come there when the shade came to that side. lol

Anyway, it turned out that they were sitting in Marat's box (which was pretty funny) and completely by accident. They were about 3 rows behind Denis and Walt. I took a photo of those two characters. I wanted to go to that side b/c I knew that Marat would be looking to his box during the match, and I figured that would present some good photo opportunities.

So after the first 3 games the sun had gone and I went over to the other side of the court and sat in Marat's box. I was 2 rows behind Denis and Walt. I did not notice until I got there that Dasha was there, but sitting in the section just to the right of them. She got up and sat in between them later on, but I did not get any photos of her because I did not realize she was there until I was sitting behind her. *lol*

As for the match, I thought Marat played really well. The guy he played was not bad, but obviously he's not a top 10 player. Marat's serve was working pretty good, although he got disgusted once and let out a big sigh (which was very easy to hear since I was practically sitting on the court!)
His volleys were amazing and he was really stepping in on Hernych's second serve and taking it early and putting pressure on him. I was very pleased with that. His backhand was on fire! He hit many amazing winners on volleys and backhands. He also hit at least one great lob and was just overall pretty impressive. I'm sure if you were following it on the scoreboard it was a bit nervewracking, but I really got the impression that Marat wanted the match to get a bit tight so he could have some competition and get some more match practice.

As he said in his interview after, the balls are really flying and he wants to get used to that. And with Roddick being his second round match, he needed to stay out there a while. He was really impressive in the tiebreak, and I was never in doubt that he would win. So it was good! :)

After the match we all ran out and I went back to the media room to await the announcement for Marat's press conference. They said he would get there at 6pm, so around 5 minutes before 6 I went into the interview room. Well, I was the only one there. *lol* I sat on the front row so I could take some good photos, but then I started getting a bit nervous and did not want to be the only person in there when he came in. So I left and came back later. *lol* Of course Marat was 15 minutes late. LOL

I was also a bit nervous about asking him any questions b/c he probably thinks I am stalking him by now. I am at all of his practices with the camera, at his match w/the camera, at his press conference etc.. *lol* No other press is there taking photos of his practices so I was a bit leary of asking him any questions.

Finally I went in and there were about 3 people in there, then Marat came in and sat down on the little stage, and right then all the people rushed in at the last minute.

Bud Collins got things started off (he was the only one I recognized). It was really an amazing experience to be there, and Marat is just so amazing and friendly and cordial to all the media. In fact after the interview when we were waiting for the transcripts to come out, I overheard some of them talking about him and they were saying how intelligent and nice they thought he was.

So after the first few questions I finally got the nerve up to ask a question. *lol* Of course I have forgotten to print out all the questions you all submitted, so I didn't have any of them with me, and my mind went blank, but I tried to think of some things to ask him and write them down while I was waiting for him to come in.

Instead of asking him specifically about his second serve, I chose to make it a more general question about if he thinks there are any aspects of his game he thinks he can improve, or if he is happy with it the way it is. When he first started answering, I almost felt like I had asked a silly question (his game is great!) but the amazing thing was that he gave me a REALLY long answer, and he was looking directly at me making direct eye contact with me the whole time he was answering the question. He really made me feel so relaxed and at ease about asking him that I felt completely comfortable asking him another question after that. :) It was one that actually made him smile and it's funny that it's in the transcript of the interview (smiling) when he answered it. And of course the best thing is the whole time he was answering and smiling, he was doing it directly at me. It was just lovely and I was really impressed with how courteous he was with me and all the rest of the media. Hopefully he does not think
I'm a stalker after all! *lol*

So after the press conference, I waited around for the transcript to come out. It was taking forever (because his interview was pretty long and the press love talking to him!). So I went downstairs with Fiona to grab some food before we left. I was standing waiting on my food and Fiona said 'there's Marat" lol. He had come in and grabbed something out of the freezer, but I didn't see him b/c my back was to him. So when we left, he was sitting out in the players eating area (which I had not seen before!) eating w/Denis and Dasha. I'm not sure who else was there as they were at one of the far end tables and I would have had to gawk and stare.. not doing that! *lol*

So, that was pretty much my day. It started out a bit stressful but ended on a lovely note. I'm very much looking forward to his match w/Roddick tomorrow, and hopefully his winning press conference afterwards!

I will post the transcript in another post. It is 4 pages long and they even cut off the end. *lol* I will put my name in parenthesis after the questions I asked him.
Also, if you read the transcript on the website in a while, it will probably not be complete. They tend to leave out lots of questions.

I'll also put up the pics I took at the press conference. The lighting in there was really bad, so my digital pictures that I am posting turned out blurry, but at least you can see him. I hope the ones I took on the film will be better.. because I took one really cute closeup one where he is smiling/laughing. :) ALso, he had the whole room cracking up a couple of times.. as usual. It was nice to be there for once to laugh along with them! :)

I'll post tomorrow after the match w/reports, some photos etc. I didn't take any pics from the match today on my digital b/c they were not coming out good, but took plenty w/the film camera which you will all see later. :)

So, hope you all enjoyed this and the transcript which took FOREVER to type up!!

Tennis Life

Buy now while stocks last! For a limited period only - and courtesy of a year spent recovering from a dodgy wrist and a lack of interest - it is possible to see Marat Safin, US Open champion of 2000 and former world No.1, against any number of top players. And all for the price of a cheap, early round ticket.

Today's player of choice at the Pacific Life Open is Andy Roddick, the US Open champion of 2003 and also a former world No.1. He was also the 7-6, 6-2 winner over Jan-Michael Gambill on Sunday. It is only the third round but the paths of the two champions have collided at the start of the second week.

This cut-price deal is unlikely to last. Should Safin produce a decent run here in the home of big hair, shell suits and golf courses, he has the chance ratchet up the rankings from his current position of 32. And should he get past Roddick, he has every chance of making serious headway.

Certainly Roddick is not expecting an easy ride. The last time these two met was at the Australian Open in the quarter finals. After five sets of fearsome hitting Safin got his way and was on his way to announcing his return to the top flight. Roddick was impressed and slightly amused by the constant talk of Safin's improvement.

"I don't know about improvement," he said, looking a little puzzled. "He was a pretty good player before he got hurt. He was No.1 in the world before so I don't know if it's some vast improvement that all of a sudden he came out and shocked people."

He knows, too, after that Australian marathon, that the days are long gone when a chap could sit back and wait for Safin to implode. These days he is happy, he is fit and he has every intention of having a crack at the No.1 slot again. And when things start to go wrong, he just works a little harder and keeps his mind on the task in front of him. Well, almost.

He had a minor moment of madness against Jan Hernych, a qualifier from the Czech Republic, dropping serve in the second set but it is nothing to worry about. With a little application he was into the tiebreak and sailing into the next round.

"It's not like I'm losing it completely," Safin said. "I'm still there. The match is still going on. I'm trying. I'm getting older. I have to grow up one day."

Roddick is of the opinion that Safin has already eased into adulthood. What the big Russian did in Melbourne showed that Safin is no longer mad, bad and dangerous to know.

"Obviously he did something to prove that notion wrong in Australia," he said. "The knock on him was that maybe he'd take days off sometimes. At the Aussie Open he was definitely the exact opposite."

So, today we have two huge men with huge shots playing for huge pride. Roddick's game is, in his own words, relatively simple: "I'm one of the guys you'd look at and say 'he's a banger. He's a guy who steps up and tries to enforce his power on people.'" Safin, on the other hand, knows his own strength but is more in favour of using brainpower to overwhelm his American rival.

"You cannot beat him clearly just playing the normal game," he said. "You have to find a way to beat him. Not let him play his game because he's very good at that."

The match may have come a little too early for Safin's liking but he is extremely happy with the way his year is working out. He is feeling strong and refreshed after a quiet few weeks. "The way I'm playing, I think I can fight for No.1," he said.

why is the interview still not up on the official site?

Cuz that's a exclusivity to Christine's web site..that's why I said before nobody should post it here. Here what Christine said on her board before posting that transcript:

``here is the 4 page interview transcript!! Please excuse any typos! Also, this is on safinator.com and is exclusive to the site. ASAP will put out a transcript at some point, but they will most likely leave a lot of this out, so please do not post on other sites! My fingers hurt from typing! ``

So I think it's pretty clear that nobody should post it here. Like I said earlier I don't want to be too politicly correct but when someone post that kind of warning we should respect it IMHO. I'm not sure people should also post her reports just the link should be alright.....but again that's MHO.

Alas, Marat's interview is up on the official site.MARAT SAFIN

March 14, 2004

Q. Are you even in better shape than you were in Australia?
MARAT SAFIN: More fresh. I'm used to ready to play. I played a couple of matches after Australia. I'm feeling I'm playing well, same conditions, but a little bit more fresh. So it's going to be a good match.
Maybe it's a little bit too early to play a great match for both of us because. It's just the second round, we play just one match. You have to get some confidence here because the balls a little bit are flying, the court is different. It's quite big. So it's difficult to play good tennis straightaway.
Q. Is the flying ball difficult for your game?
MARAT SAFIN: It's a little bit. It's unusual a little bit because it's the only tournament that I'm playing where the balls are flying more than other tournaments. You have to get used to it.

Q. Are you relieved to be at this tournament healthy, not fighting an injury like before? You were sick last year, I think.
MARAT SAFIN: I'm happy. I'm really happy. I'm trying to stay a little bit out of the injuries, try to take care of my body. That's why I'm traveling with a masseur. I do a lot of fitness, so that could not happen again, I can just play my tennis and try to improve my ranking.

Q. Because of the wonderful way in which you brought your game back to a peak in Australia, was what happened before now just a bad dream, you can forget it, concentrate on the future?
MARAT SAFIN: Yeah, but if I would say that somebody would tell me in December that I would be in the finals of Australia, I would say, "You are joking." So it's not so bad. It's very good actually for me straightaway that after so many months off, to make finals in a Grand Slam, being in good shape, beat the guys like Roddick, Agassi. So it's quite good, quite good performance for me.

Q. When did you honestly think then that you would be beating the top guys and getting into finals?
MARAT SAFIN: Definitely not in the January. I thought I'm going to play a couple of rounds, you know, in Australia. I would get a little in better shape. But it's quite difficult to play well straightaway because you have to get used to the balls, you have to get used to the guys you used to play before, because the speed is growing, and I didn't play for many months. It's really difficult because the game is improving and is getting faster.

Q. When in your mind were you thinking you would be okay? Was it about now?
MARAT SAFIN: It's difficult. It's difficult to say. I was thinking just to make a couple of rounds here and there, then just more or less getting to the summer, I would feel much better. Like to the French Open, I was thinking I would get in good shape.
But it changed a lot. So now I have to -- I am in a good position right now, so I cannot basically stop. I have to look forward and work hard to stay there because it's quite difficult to maintain your shape after doing well in a Grand Slam. Normally then it's coming when you going down the hill.
So you try to keep up the same level of game and not to give up on anything. No matter what results you are getting in the tournaments, just try to stay in shape and play well match after match. If you lose, it's okay. But you try. You try. You keep on try.

Q. Do you have expectations of yourself? If so, what are they?
MARAT SAFIN: Expectations? On the year? On the tournament? On the next two months? The future?

Q. On the year.
MARAT SAFIN: I'm trying -- I still have a chance. The way I'm playing, I think I can fight for No. 1. I mean, it's a little bit complicated because Federer, he's really playing well. But the year is quite long. Let's see how it's going. But for the moment, I'm in a great shape. I'm playing well. I'm enjoying tennis. I had a couple -- I had a very close match against him in Dubai. I lost in tiebreaks.
There are also players like Ferrero, Hewitt, Agassi's there. So it's going to be tough. It's going to be interesting, it's going to be difficult. But now is a little bit too early about what your expectation for the year because my expectation is to finish No. 1 in the world, as other players the same, they have the same feelings, and they think they can finish No. 1.
But then like in the middle of the summer, after Wimbledon, then the picture is already more clear, and then you can see who is there, who is not.

Q. But the motivation is clearly there?
MARAT SAFIN: Yes, motivation is there. Is most important thing for me.

Q. Are there any aspects of your game you think you can improve or are you pretty happy?
MARAT SAFIN: It's difficult to improve some things. You can improve a little bit just to be more solid at some point. But it's difficult to improve, something to change in the game, because I'm already 24. It's difficult to change some -- technically it's impossible. Then you can destroy the shot, for example, forehand, backhand, serve. You never do it. You never touch it.
You can improve somehow without changing it. Just be more solid is the most important thing. But now it's more like psychologically than technically.

Q. Are you doing anything now to prepare mentally? You seem a bit tougher.
MARAT SAFIN: I'm trying. I'm getting older, you know (smiling). I have to. I have to grow up one day.

Q. What about the mental aspect? You had three breakpoints to avoid getting in the tiebreaker out there. You hit some forehands, but you stayed right on him, won the tiebreaker nicely. There was no coming apart there at all.
MARAT SAFIN: But is not like I'm losing it completely. I'll still there. Still the match is going on. I know it's three sets here, so every point, every game is very important. And even if I miss three forehands, it was not like a stupid mistake, I was going for that shots. I was trying to win the point. It's not like I was waiting for him to make a mistake and like I didn't do anything basically.
I went, I missed, it's my fault, it's okay. I keep on trying, keep on trying. I won the tiebreak. The tiebreak was quite easy. But, well, you have to do something. You cannot wait for and expect the mistakes from the opponent.

Q. Can you talk about Roddick. Looking forward to tomorrow?
MARAT SAFIN: Yeah. Like I said, it's a great match. For me it's really good, quite nice to play. But it's a little bit early maybe.

Q. What about his game seems to work for you? What can you do with him that others maybe can't?
MARAT SAFIN: It's difficult. Of course, every person, every player, has own problems. I don't want to speak about them. Roddick knows, and I know that he has some problems with his game. And probably Gilbert, he knows that I have some problems with my game.
So you try to -- because you cannot like beat him clearly just playing the normal game. You have to find a way to beat him. Just go to the net, put pressure on his backhand, and not let him play tennis, his game, because he's really good at that. You have to put pressures all the time. You have to risk, risk, risk.
And is going to be tough match and is going to be -- it will decide by two points.

Q. Did you learn things in Australia that you can now use?
MARAT SAFIN: Yes, yes.

Q. But he learned things he's going to use, too?
MARAT SAFIN: Probably. But he will have a really difficult time (smiling).
