This match was little more than an exhibition. James knows the big one is tomorrow. At least Robredo redeemed himself by winning a match.

Good for Robredo that he didnt end the tourney without any wins, but waste of energy for Blake. Well at least nobody can claim that James didnt try or that he tanked. Good luck tomorrow against Nalby.

Blake :smash: what was he doing? Extending the match like that after losing the first set, he should have tanked! Sportsmanship OK but noone would blame him for letting Tommy get the W.

Tommy :hatoff: got one win at least.

I doubt Blake went out and cruised through it...he has always struggled against this type of opponent. It would have been good practice for him to actually win the match.

Nice to see Robredo notch a win. Nice to see that Blake didn't tank, even if it was clear that he was giving a bit less than 100% effort. Let's hope that Blake didn't waste too much energy so that the match vs. Nalbandian is high quality.

I am not surprised. Robredo's topspin allows him to hang in the rallies with Blake. Whoever is more consistent and mentally tougher would win this matchup.

But of course doubters will still say that James wasn't motivated blah blah...

Added to Blake's 2007 To Do list: must work harder to make tanking less effortless.

Net Cord
11-17-2006, 06:46 PM
As I said in the match thread, I don't think that Blake tanked. That said, I think he tried to end points even more quickly than usual and failed to run down some balls that he usually would have tried to retrieve. I'd say that he played with about 80-90% effort. All credit goes to Robredo, though, and as can be seen from their Australian Open matchup, this was not a fluke.

Added to Blake's 2007 To Do list: must work harder to make tanking less effortless.

You are not suggesting he should ever delibrately lose a match. Spectators pay money to watch matches. Not to see players not try.

This is the problem with these type of events and dead matches, but we have many more next year.

No, a player shouldn't go into a match wanting to win a 5 setter, he should close it out in 3.

It seemed pretty clear to me that James was simply going for a lot of winners in the 3rd set so that he did not have to "work" points and expend a lot of energy. At first, it wasn't working, and he fell down 5-2. Then, he starting cracking a lot of winners and got back to 5-5. But it's difficult to keep hitting winners without developing points, which led to him dropping the next 2 games.

Why would anyone think Blake tanked this?! There are points and there is a LOT of money at stake. Plus, he had to expend enough effort anyway as it was a 3-setter. Also, I think Andy will retain American #1 with James's loss here, unless he reaches the final.
All these suggest that Tommy won his match, not James tanking. You people....

Have you watched the match? Blake never seemed less interested.

I did watch from end of first set onwards. Blake seemed, I would say, relaxed.

But don't you think he's interested in getting to #4 because of the implications at the Australian? It was guaranteed with a win here, and there is now no longer a guarantee that will happen. Money I can understand is relatively irrelevant at this stage so that may be no incentive, but ranking points are tremendously valuable in jumping from below #4 to above #4.

The thing is he is still in this competition and a final would be his best result so far, and giving all in this match could compromise his performance tomorrow.
